Saturday’s GoT Laughs: Voice impressions and a book cover

This brilliant video has become popular some two weeks ago, but all the hullabaloo around Comic Con delayed this posting. By now, Steve Love’s impressions have attracted almost half a million views, and he deserves more!

In other news, we present you a Westerosi alternate reality book cover (by Sirjolt). I love the exceedingly smart use of multilayered puns and references in this one:

Haha, bravo, Steve Lowe. Not enough decent homebrew fan videos in this fandom. I just wish he played with the other voices too after he established he could imitate them. Loved the Jorah riffing!

Second item… eh. Sometimes a joke has so much layering it ceases to be effective. I’d rather see someone put out a simple “Fifty Shades of Shae,” though I bet it’s harder to imagine if you haven’t read her of prodigious sexploits in the novels.

    The Young Wolf,

It looks like the Shae in the show actually cares for Tyrion. If she was the same two-faced player she was in the book she’d have no reason to suggest they elope and tell him she doesn’t care about his money. I believe they’re going for a thoroughly victimized Shae in the TV series. Perhaps this is why they’re downplaying the golden hands (yes, they exist, but the pin is more prominent). She’ll probably die by the hands of the other Lannisters rather than Tyrion’s, making him even more sympathetic.

Reaaallly hoping you’re wrong and they have the guts to go through with Shae betraying Tyrion and Tyrion killing Shae. They can twist it in whichever ways they prefer to reach this outcome, given that Show Shae is a lot more sympathetic and a lot less likely to just sell him out, but that act of murder is pretty key to cementing just how far Tyrion has fallen by the end of SoS.

I’ve been getting nervous ever since I realized how much more sympathetic they’ve chosen to make Shae in the TV series. If they just have Cersei or Tywin off her, without her showing up for the trial scene, it’ll strike me as extremely cowardly.

He messes up in patches of Ned and Robert; his own southern (English) accent betrays him there. His Jon, Pycelle, Varys and Littlefinger are pretty good. His Davos (or “Devos”) and Jorah are pretty bad.

He’s deliberately playing up Aidan Gillen’s true Irish accent for a laugh there, right? Because I totally believe that he would be able to do a straight Littlefinger impression if he tried.

And on the Shae discussion in spoilers above:

I think it’s reasonable that Shae could sincerely think that it would be nice to elope with Tyrion, his good qualities and all his money, but ALSO sincerely think that once he’s thrown into a dungeon for regicide it’s better to coolly cut her losses.

I remember an interview with the impressionist/comedian Frank Caliendo where he said that the best impressions don’t go for 100% mimicry–instead they zero in on funny little quirks that everyone has in their speech and sort of exaggerate them for comedic effect. You can hear this guy doing that here, especially with his Robert and Littlefinger. His Varys is spot-on mimicry and very impressive.

    Ivan Grozny,

I think they might go the other way with Shae, have her be loyal to Tyrion, sleep with Tywin and testify against him out of fear, and then have Tyrion kill her not knowing she didn’t really want to do those things.

    sunspear,

Yeah I think so too. They will probably show her prepareing to defend Tyrion at first, but then beeing forced to speak against him by Tywin and/or Cercei and eventually giving in, valueing her own life more than that of Tyrion, which is, in my opinion, also a realistic point of view, not just on how it would have happened in real life but also how it probably happened in the books (“offscreen”). That way, Tyrion killing her eventually should make for good, tragic television and maybe another Emmy for Dinklage.

Woah! Am I the only one who wants him to start reading the books in peoples voices? He should try and get in contact with GRRM he can re do the audiobooks and as it’s only one guy, though they need to hire a female impressionist for the female roles. I liked Dotrice, but the women suffered heavily in AFFC and ADWD. they all turned into elderly Irish women. Anyway my point is hire him for new audiobooks!

Nope still thinking they are doing to her what they did with THeon’s storyline. Remember in the books he didn’t ask Robb if he was Robb’s brother and all that. It made the betrayal all the more shocking. Same thing with Shae.

Great to see so much interest in Shae’s fate! Just speculation on my part. What I simply CAN’T see them doing is antagonizing Tyrion via Shae’s inevitable death. While I appreciate the tenderness between them in Season 2, I do hope Shae undergoes some sort of shocking metamorphosis before she betrays Tyrion, even if part of me will roll my eyes at the elaborate detour that would retroactively make of her S2 self.

It’s harder to imagine Shae not being a victim now. S2 Shae is as sanitized a sex worker as Hepburn’s Holly in Breakfast at Tiffany’s except for her lines. It sort of lends her character a dignity and sympathy she didn’t have in the books.

So far, I actually prefer Book Shae to Show Shae since her character only made it clearer how much of Tyrion’s younger self still ruled him. I think Show Shae is another example of showrunner fluffing, not unlike the Talisa character, although I’m not diametrically opposed to all such changes. I understand why they would make these adjustments and additions (truth be told, the show would seem pretty bleak to newcomers without them), even if I prefer the less-is-more treatments in the books that work better in the novel format.

Some people write off Book Shae as being a porny nobody, but she is just exceedingly good at playing Tyrion and doing her job. She was born a nobody, so she used her only blessing, her youth, to advance her personal welfare. It was the depths of Tyrion’s enchantment with her that made his betrayal so palpable. I won’t write off the show’s chances of capturing that exquisite moment in its entirety. I’m more concerned with Tywin’s death at this point. I am, however, curious as to what kind of Tyrion-Shae climax the show is building up to.

I know people say this a lot (to my personal frustration), but if you caught that last pun, none intended. It just kind of spurted out. On a lighter note, how gross would a Shae POV chapter be? Boing! [laughs]

    Ours is the Fury,

Of course it wouldn’t be any more graphic than some of Tyrion’s chapters. My honest thoughts? Having such a chapter would ruin her character, as the poorly executed Cersei chapters did for Cersei’s character.

The notion of Shae POVs just struck me as funny, especially considering Book Shae’s downplayed inner life and highlighted sexuality. Facetious, much? Yep.

I’m glad somebody did, and you’re definitely not alone. While I have hope for the adaptation of AFFC and ADWD, I tend to see them as the weakest books in the series. Even so, we all love the series, which is the difference between more Game of Thrones and less Game of Thrones.
