The killing of the baby in episode 1 was the scene I reacted most strongly to, but after that it’d have to be the taking of Winterfell and Rodrik’s execution.

Theon taking Winterfell. Disturbing and absolutely surreal – certainly the most riveting start to an episode that the series has done thus far.

Theon/Luwin and Arya/Yoren also deserve mentioning. Had they been included in the poll, I would have had a tougher time voting.

I chose Theon taking Winterfell. The beheading of Rodrik was shocking because of Alfie’s acting and the fact that it was so different than the books.

I wish I could just vote Theon’s scenes in Winterfell in general. The beheading of Rodrik and Theon’s scene with Maester Luwin in the last episode were both amazing. This is coming from someone who has read all the books and feels nothing but pity for Theon.

I wish I could find the whole scene… this is my absolute favorite scene of the season.

Some strong contenders to be sure, but I went with the whole Theon taking Winterfell-thing.

I feel like the execution might be somewhat of a taste of what the RW will feel like. The RW episode might just have the same director too, since he’s directing the last two of s3.

Another vote for Ser Rodrik’s execution. Possibly one of the best scenes in the entire series so far. The added touch of both Bran and Rickon crying and pleading for his life! They could have done it with them off camera, but it made it so much more gut wrenching to see them watch it. “I’m off to see your father” = chills.

i like to vote before looking at the comments and … it looks like im the only one that went with theon burning the letter and his baptism
1)the tyrion three offers scene was a little too modern for me i thought that for a “medieval” show shouldnt have cuts like that
2)the daenerys scene was underwhelming with just one puff of fire (but i guess theyre leaving more for later)
    3) cersei capturing ros…… i dont think any book readers really care too much for ros and we didnt really see a real friendship between tyrion and ros (besides those times) like he had with chataya
    4) theon with ser rodrik was very good but i just love “what is dead may never die!!!”

Ah, but there is intense-dramatic and tense-dramatic. What do we mean by drama here? I prefer tense dramatic scenes with mild intensity over very intense and strong scenes.
Intense there are many: Joffrey/Sansa at the Throne Room, Sansa´s almost rape, shadowbaby born, Rodrick´s execution, etc.
Dramatically tense, not so many: The reunion between Balon and Theon was very good. Quietly- tense- dramatic scene. Nice dialogue. The scenes between Tyrion and Cersei were good too, especially that one where Tyrion tries to comfort Cersei and seems he wants to … hug her?
Drunken Cersei´s scenes at Blackwater (with or without Tommen) were tense and subtle.
Of the available options I chose Tyrion´s offers but I think those scenes were more amusing than intense/tense?

Here’s a woman’s brief opinions on those listed:

1 -Tyrion makes three offers – great scenes, did not captivate me like other events.

2 – Theon burns the letter, gets baptized – beautifully written and filmed, did not drive me crazy with suspense

3 – Theon seizes Winterfell, executes Ser Rodrik – this made me weep, great scene in every way

4 – Daenerys in the House of the Undying – once Drogo and Raego were on the screen, a woman wept, also beautifully written and filmed

5 – Cersei captures Ros, Tyrion threatens Cersei – this was everyday Cersei cruelty, not as special as some other scenes with Cersei (like Blackwater scenes, when she shoves Tyrion after he does the Dornish deal, the scene where she slaps Joffrey in the under-renovation throne room, Cersei and Tyrion bidding farewell to Marcella and threatening Tyrion, Cersei and Tommen on the Iron Throne as Tywin and Loras burst in to save KL, to name a few).

NO STARKS except where Theon effects them?????

A woman thinks there should be an opportunity for fans to pick THEIR OWN favorite scenes rather than choosing from this list. Though there are several great ones on this list, there are many that were omitted that might top all of those. Ok, polls are limited, but how about you let the fans submit ideas and pick the top 5 from THOSE?????

Maester Luwin sees the burned boys…great scene.

Brienne and Catelyn witness the shadow assassin killing Renly and have to take off….great scene.

Brienne pledges her sword to Cat…great scene!

No Yoren taking on the Gold Cloaks and putting that knife in the guy’s groin? And then when they return with Amory Lorch? Yoren had 2 awesome scenes this season including his badass fight to the death! That whole scene from when Arya and Yoren are talking to Yoren’s kiling and the capture of Arya and her mates…that was better than some of those listed. A woman was on the edge of her seat!

No Jaqen and Arya when she needs him to kill Amory Lorch? That was very dramatic too! A woman was on the edge of her seat again!

No Arya and Tywin when he looks out the window and tells her the story of Harenhall, she stares at his neck with the knife in her hand…that wasn’t a freaking awesome scene?

No Arya naming Jaqen in order to manipulate him to help her escape? “Unname me” PRICELESS SCENE!

So Maisie Williams is undoubtedly one of the best performers of the season, but didn’t have any dramatic scenes worthy of merit? Pshhaw!

Bran, Rickon, Osha, Hodor emerge from the crypts to find burnt Winterfell and dying Maester Luwin in the godswood…that wasn’t worth merit?

Bran versus the Hound at the beginning of Blackwater…not an epic scene? DAMNIT

Jon Snow and Ygritte running around the icebergs???

Jon Snow and Qorin fighting to the death?

    Jamie kills his cousin…not dramatic?

Brienne and Jamie encounter Stark soldiers on the river bank, Brienne turns into a killing machine…no good?

Sam realizes he can’t run and goes to hide behind a rock as the white walkers and Others surround him…not dramatic enough?

OK, there are too many, you had to pare it down to a few…but still, a woman is disappointed that some of the dearly departed cast members were not given precedence for a chance to win a WiC award before they’re no longer on our lists and the absence of some other favorites like Arya, Brienne, Jon Snow, Robb, Sansa, Jaime, Cat.

OK, how about a separate award for “Best exit from the show” scene (which would include deaths and people taking off into the unknown like Jaqen and Davos)??? This would give us another opportunity to honor those who probably will not be seen on GoT again.

Enough of a woman’s bitching, you do your best, it is known.

    My top 5:

1- Theon taking Winterfell and killing Ser Rodrick – Beautifuly writtenand mind-blowing acting. Alfie Allen really out-did Theon’s storyline in book 2.

2-Cercei’s scene in the Throne Room with Tommen – I don’t understand why there was any doubt about Lena Headey’s acting. Looking forward to see her spinning out of control in book 4/season 5.

3-Tyrion and Shae’s scene in ”Valar Morghulis” – It may be different than in the books, but I like their relationship and look forward too seeing what happens. Thank’s Peter Dinklage.

4-Sansa’s throne room scene with Joffrey – Again, actors are amazing. It was as chilling as it was in the books. Jack Gleeson’s portrayal of Joffrey is really good, he brings a sort of scary sense of ”not really knowing what he’s going to do, even tough you’ve read the books”.

5-Catelyn and Robb’s scene in a tent in ”The North Remembers” – Really good scene with the Starks, once again. I like how they showed Catelyn’s need to get back the girls and Robb’s negative response.

PS: I can’t quite place Tyrion’s speech in Blackwater.

I saw the headline and came rushing into this thread to vote for Cersei and Tommen on the iron throne, but was kind of underwhelmed by the choices. But hey, there are a lot of dramatic scenes in this show, narrowing to a list of 5 cannnot be easy. So, of the options available to me, I selected the HotU. I was excited for it becuase it was a scene I knew was coming, but also knew would be different from the books. I was blown away, in part because watching Dany scream that she will take what is hers with fire and blood all season led me to not remember how much I can care fo her character (Emilia really can be excellent with meatier material), and allowed the emotional impact to take me by surprise. Maybe I lean towards the emotionally dramatic rather than the action-ey dramatic? In any event, these polls are a lot of fun and remind me of ALL the great scenes/episodes/actors of this season.

All of the other categories have been a little divided for me, but this one was a no-brainer in my mind. The Tyrion 3 truths scene was wonderfully shot, but the most dramatic? I don’t think so. The scene with Roz and Cercei was certainly dramatic -Peter’s facial features invoked so much emotion! But the prize for inducing the most drama goes to Theon’s arc, hands down.

Theon’s baptism would get my vote if is wasn’t for the completely gut-wrenching and fear-inducing scene of Rodrik’s execution. Both scenes were enhanced by the wonderful score – definitely the most chilling song on the soundtrack IMO.

I wasn’t that impressed with HOTU, not because I’m a book purist but because I just didn’t find it that big for all the build-up. My non-reader friend thought the same. Amazing effects for the throne room though, gotta give it that.

Agree with all the dramatic moments you mentioned, although I would also go for the sacking of Winterfell.

At this point I think, in hindsight, some stories were better treated and given more attention than others because of their importance for later events, such as Theon’s, whereas Jon’s story, for example, is kind of of secondary importance in
S2, although beautifully written in the book.

Iknew that my choice — Lancel confronting Cersei duing Blackwater — would never be listed, but I had hoped for one of the Luwin scenes, and voted for the execution of Ser Rodrik accordingly. Tyrion/Cersei/Ros was my second choice; unlike many others, I enjoy Ros’s scenes, particularly the ones this year, and the one with Grand Maester Pycelle. Joff with the crossbow making Ros beat (and maybe kill?) the other whore was probably too much over the top. But I would have liked to see the Renly/Margery bedroom scene on the list as well.

Having these scenes only to choose from, a woman is torn finally between the HOTO and Theon taking Winterfell. They were both wonderful scenes with totally different feelings at the root of them, both emotional, both beautifully written, produced, filmed, acted. The other ones were too, but these appear to be a cut above IMO. A woman will give it more thought and time for the decision. Still thinking that perhaps more specific categories would be easier to judge, like “Best Dramatic Conversational Scene,” “Best Battle Scene,” “Best Scene Resulting In A Character’s Demise,” “Best Family Smackdown,” “Best Recovery from an Untenable Position,” “Best Facial Reaction to News,” “Best Verbal Smackdown,” “Most Unexpected Plot Twist,” etc….OK, one could go on for hours like that.

Thank you WiC/Phil for humoring your fellow fans.

I do think Cersei and Tommen in the throneroom, Catelyn releasing Jaime and everything involving Arya and Tywin should be listed though!

    Theon. The Letter.
Even when taking into accounts the awesome Tywin-Arya scenes, this one stays for me the best addition of D&D to the books.

This. It was such a strong scene showing what I feel was Theon’s true turning point. He made his decision. It wasn’t as bold as the others, nor as blatantly “dramatic” but I loved the subtle, almost insecure determination Alfie shows as Theon decides to be Balon Greyjoy’s heir after being loyal to Winterfell most of his life.

I went with Theon burning the letter, but I also liked the scene when Millisandre let Stannis gaze into the fire following Blackwater. The one that starts out with Stannis remembering that he “killed his brother”.

One thing that bothered this woman about the HOTU was that we never saw ANY actual Undying. Not being a book purist (read books AFTER seeing Season 1 so am really a show+book geek), just thought that this was an oversight that could have been easily remedied by showing a few ghoulish looking creatures sitting at the table where the dragons were chained. A few costumed extras would have made the point (and they could have also been set afire) but apparently having the actual residents of the HOTU there wasn’t important to the D&D folks. Just irritating, so will cast a vote for Theon taking Winterfell since that was probably as perfect as can be done for TV.

Theon’s baptism and the burning of the letter were the finest of the scenes listed, and my favourites in the whole season. A close second for me would be Dany on the Great Hall, very poignant and with a lot of meaning.

Sheez there are several amazing scenes that seems not to have made the cut and were in my opinion better than those put forth. However if choosing between these I have to pick Ser Rodrik’s beheading. Of these scenes it was the only one that made me….ferociously pick at something that was in my eye.

If I could, I’d nominate Cersei in all her scenes in “Blackwater”, especially the Tommen one. But, the nominations being what they are, I chose Tyrion’s three offers because I thought it exceedingly well executed as well as entertaining. It was either that or Theon burning the letter, as a stand-in for all the other powerful moments of his storyline this season.

I must admit I agree with many pollsters that the choice of scenes here is on the weak side. I voted for Theon’s sack of Winterfell and the execution of Ser Rodrik: “Then gods help you, Theon Greyjoy, for you are truly lost.” Probably the most cutting remark of the season, but because it was true. The contrast with Eddard’s execution – make it a clean cut – underlines how Theon had lost his way.

After that, I’d have put these 4 next:

    B) The riot in King’s Landing, and Tyrion slapping Joffrey – so cathartic, in many ways, a catharsis that we will not be able to feel again until Joffrey bites it on pigeon pie

    C) Maester Luwin’s death: “I pulled you both into this world…” His death was the hardest to take of the series next to Eddard.

    D) Brienne pledges her sword to Catelyn Stark

    E) Tyrion’s tearful scene in “Valar Morghulis” with Shae

    Honorable mentions:

-any of Arya’s scenes with Tywin Lannister

-Cersei and Tyrion (almost) share an emotional, familial moment

-Arya’s great scene with Yoren and the subsequent death of Lommy. “Carry ‘im, he says.” Brutal and awful. And the Yoren scene was the one thing missing from the Jon/Qhorin relationship – that pairing needed one scene like that, or even where they recite the oath together, and Qhorin makes it clear what Jon has to do.

    -Jaqen’s farewell to Arya.

-Theon to Balon: “You gave away your boy! Your last boy!”

–Yara (Asha) to Theon: “Don’t die so far from the sea.”

-Cersei in the crypt with Sansa

-Sansa and the Hound in Valar Morghulis: “I won’t hurt you, little bird.” And the previous episode, where he tells her that she’d better learn to understand every man in her life was, is, or will be a killer.

-Tyrion’s St. Crispin’s Day Speech to the army in Blackwater

-Stannis recalling the siege of Storm’s End to Davos: “Then we ate the dogs. Don’t like cats, but dogs are loyal. I like dogs, but we ate them anyway.”

Red Priestess: I went with the letter burning and the baptism. The moment where Theon’s life changed, the moment where he lost the boy who once was a ward of the Starks. In both of those scenes, he basically left his past behind him and took his first steps to what he would later become.

My feelings exactly, I voted for the same scene. It was subtle and powerful at the same time, and the direction, music and cinematography were at their best.

I remember voting for Blackwater as my favorite episode of Season 2 with the caveat that the ep did not contain my single favorite scene of the season (hell, or the series) so far, so I am so happy to see “Theon seizes Winterfell, executes Ser Rodrik” among the nominees. (Though, on a side note, I’d vote Theon’s baptism scene as the most beautifully shot scene of the season.)

And add my voice to those who are surprised that Cersei and Tommen didn’t make the list. Huh.

I’m finally getting around to re-watching S2. I’m just now getting to Blackwater, but before I do, I wanted to comment on what scene affected me the most on my re-watch. It is when Luwin first spies Osha going into the crypts and then he’s down there and they’re talking about the farmer’s boys getting hanged and they better not let “the little lords” overhear. The camera goes around to the other side of the structure and Bran is wide awake, listening to everything, and his face is so sad – his eyes are so sad. And then the cello begins as the episode closes out. Wow – I was brought to tears again over it, and I knew it was coming. I think that is my most favorite dramatic moment in S2.
