It’s time for a new round of voting on the WiCnet Awards for season two of Game of Thrones. Last week, we did best supporting actors and this week it is the ladies’ turn, as we open up the voting for best supporting actress. As usual, these five nominees were selected by myself, Hear Me Roar, Fire and Blood and Ours is the Fury. This was a category where we could have easily included two or three more roles as there were a lot of great women this season. But these were, in our collective opinion, the five best.
After the break, cast your vote and then debate your selection in the comments!
Here is the direct link to the poll, if you can’t see it embedded here.

I see no poll :(
Judging from the “Tagged as” though, I will be voting Gwen.
She is Brienne, and Brienne is Awesome!
Everyone else had their moments though, Gemma had some great Deadpan lines, Rose did a great job being cheeky and trying to get Jon to liven up a bit, Natalie portrayed a much wiser (And a TV better character) and had possibly the most memorable line delivery of the season. Sibel did great with the added scenes with Sansa.

Gwendoline Christie would have got my vote were it not for my love of Jon Snow’s storyline and my other head…which made me vote for Rose Leslie instead.
Cersei’s right. That thing between our legs is our weakness =(

Rose Leslie. She’s perfect as Ygritte.

Dormer is hot as hell, but as far as the acting goes, I honestly can’t decide between Rose Leslie and Gwen Christie. Rose (as Ygritte) was the only thing, that kept Jon’s storyline going, this season … and Gwendoline, on the other hand, IS Brienne. After a long consideration, I’m voting for Rose.
PepiQuote Reply
Ygritte will have meatier material next year. This year there wasn’t much, but Rose did much with little time. Still, no vote.
Shae…not the greatest book character, nor show character. No vote.
The other three, though…love all around. Three of the best ASoIaF ladies, all given great actresses. I voted Gemma Whelan, though. I couldn’t have voted for Ms. Dormer because the, um, visual appeal she brings has perhaps clouded my judgement. So I try and account for it. And everyone knew Gwen would be a wonderful Brienne, and she has been. I think she’ll get my vote next year if the book is anything to go by.
Gemma…did not fit very many people’s mental image of Asha. She had a lot of naysayers from the outset. But she did brilliant work with one of my favorite chapters in the saga, her reunion with her brother. She had me from then on, and only solidified her spot as one of my top GoT ladies with her plea to Theon, “Don’t die so far from the sea.”
I love that casting and I love her performance.
ZackQuote Reply
This was surprisingly hard. I went with Rose Leslie because I think she did great with all the subtleties of the power shifts between her and Jon when she was his captive. My only real disappointment this season was Gemma. She just didn’t have the right attitude for Yara/Asha – the way she carried herself was hunched over and uncertain, instead of shoulders back and a little more carefree the way Asha comes off in the books. But that’s a nitpicky thing.

Zack,
Exactly; well-written; that’s why Gemma is *almost* my choice, and may yet be it.
Yara =/= Asha and that final scene of the season.. totally gave her a heart. Sure, she isn’t a salty pirate, but there’s something to be said for Yara’s calculating manner and acid wit. One of the most hilarious lines of the season is from her when Theon is to be sent to raid fishing villages: “Be careful of their nets..” Ha! She’s great, a worthy sibling. But she kills it with those final lines, showing how she’s more than just a pirate captain; she’s Theon’s sis.
The problem is *all* of these women killed it. Gwen in particular was spot-on plus. Dormer too and the other two too. Tricky choice!

Is it the spot-on, exactly-as-I-saw-them-in-my-head performances of Gwendoline and Rose, or is it the different-but-wonderful jobs done by Gemma and Sibel? Rounding it out is Natalie, whose Margaery didn’t have the most screen time but whose portrayal left me in excrutiating anticipation for all the awesomeness she’ll bring to the character’s story arch in Season 3. Damn Nina Gold and her near-flawless casting!
In the end it’s Brienne for me, but Seven Hells was it ever a tough call!

Actually surprised how many people seem to Gwendoline Christie is a good actress. If you remove yourself from the fan-boy/girl mentality for one second (and just how physically accurate she is to the description of Brienne in the book), and assess her on actual ability, I think the outcome would be different. Rose Leslie is clearly the best actor/actress/whatever we’re meant to say these days.
All in all, though, this category is a lot weaker than the best supporting male one.
BruceQuote Reply
Tough call.
Gwendoline was AMAZING but i have to give it to Gemma for how well she absolutely NAILED the role of Asha.
WinterfellQuote Reply
I realize it her Margaery was probably all that different than her Anne Boylen, but I have to vote for Natalie Dormer.
She sizzled when she had to — and yes, the ability to come across as sexy (and not just when naked) on the screen is still a skill — but more interestingly she has a couple of scenes that really could have been botched to my mind and did very well in them.
The fluffer scene is one of the best of the season, to my mind — just awesome insight into her character. It could have been pretty awful but she did it well. And the interaction with Littlefinger (first time, very subtle — so subtle most people didn’t get it) and second time (more inflection) was also very good..
Sibel has made Shae more likeable, Rose Leslie was fun, Gwen has been right on target and Gemma won me over with her little brother conversation… but Margaery is the only actress of this bunch that has really shaped how I *think* of the character in my head.
So she gets my vote.
AlanQuote Reply
Sibel Kekili was pretty good in her last scene with Tyrion and also with Sansa but for me was between Gemma Whelan or Rose Leslie. Voted for Gemma Whelan, her scenes were harder I think. She was able to go from a snarky and mocking older sister to protective and sincere.

I shouldn’t have been so dismissive of Shae. She, like Cersei, took awhile to win me over, but she did, eventually, and had some memorable scenes with both Sansa and Tyrion. I’m fully crediting the actress and D&D, because the character in the text was not all that fleshed out.
But she’s never going to be in my top list of the ladies of the show. Kekilli and the writers can only elevate the character so far.
ZackQuote Reply
Voted for Rose, as I felt she was the most natural and believable. As great as Gwen was, some of her lines felt forced, especially the Renly death scene. Gemma was brillant and a strong second choice. As Zach said, book and HBO Shae is nicht so gut. And, I still can’t get past Dormers crooked mouth everytime she speaks so she’s out. Unless you throw in Ian Glen’s v neck as a supporting actor, Rose gets the beef for being truly superb.

I’m voting for Shae. Like most people, I did not like how she was represented in season 1, but season 2 blew me away, especially her performance in Blackwater. While I like Gwendoline’s Brienne very much (she is exactly how I imagined her), I don’t think she had enough screen time to truly show her acting skills as much as Shae. The same goes for Gemma and Rose. The only character I disliked completely was Margaery. While I love Natalie Dormer and think she will prove herself in the next season, I still cannot get those stupid dresses and smirk out of my head.
So I’m voting for Sibel Kekilli as Shae, with Rose Leslie my runner up!

Brienne and Ygritte are awesome characters but for me it was a real toss up between Miss Tyrell and Shae.
With Margarey’s completely fabricated role I thought she was great in the stint with Renly and her brother. But Shae was humanized so much from “whore that Tyrion loves” to someone who is actually quite smart. The way she comforts and advises Sansa(who was much more bold in the show opposed to the books) really did it for me though.

OK so I love Natalie Dormer to no end and thought she was fantastic. In the books, Asha might be one of my favorite characters, and her TV portrayal is really intriguinging to me, I;m very excited to see where D&D/ Ms. Whalen takes this. I have absolutely no love for Ygritte in the books, and am generally less interested in the goings on north of the wall than in King’s Landing. All this said…Rose Leslie absolutely killed it. She WAS Ygritte, the complete embodiment of the character for me. And she gave me something to enjoy in the midst of what has been kind of agreed to be a slightly botched adaptation of Jon’s story arch. She definitely earned it in my eyes.
JillQuote Reply
This one was so hard…. I’ve gone towards Sibel, there’s something about the fierceness of those eyes. She is Shae completely, theres something so like Cersei about her and for me Sibel has knocked it out of the park!

This is tough! I voted for Gwendolyne since it is always amazing when a character steps straight out of the page/ imagination and matches it perfectly.
Thought Dormer and Leslie made great impressions, their own takes on the characters that are actually better than the one- note ones from the book. Next season they will be even better!
Shae was not bad this season, I found her kinda annoying in the books, making her feistier and Sansa’s handmaiden was kinda brilliant and improved her much IMO.
Asba/ Yara was a bit of a letdown, they made her kinda darker and brooding compared to her wonderful snarky book character, not bad per-se but still.
No Melisandre? I think Carice brought a wonderful, dark sensuality to her and worked quite well for me.

Although I’m not sure she would ever win best supporting actress or anything of the like, I do believe that she should get some credit. If one doesn’t like the character, it’s the writer that’s to blame. Esme has this part to play and she does it well, no bout a doubt it.
The InstrumentalistQuote Reply
Although everyone mentioned above did a wonderful job (especially Natalie and Rose). To me it’s pretty obvious who deserves this vote.
Brienne!!!
Gwen is a really dedicated actress. She is working out, learning to wield a sword and how to ride a horse. She even cut off her beautifully long hair. She is totally dedicated to bringing the Brienne from the books alive for us by doing everything humanly possible to actually become Brienne.
For that I am grateful and she easily wins my vote.
ArthurQuote Reply
Seriously people are knit picking on physical characteristics of the female actresses?

Omar BrownQuote Reply
Gwen has my vote, too. I think Brienne is not an easy part to play, it could easily get comical, up till now she nailed it for me. And the actress can not trust in good looks and naked scenes to win the audience, like Maegery.
Yara had similiar problems but I still do not like her much. The hole greyjoy family and storyline was my least favorite in the books but Theon and his father improved much in the show, but not Yara.
Ygritte had great scenes with Jon, but I do not think she had much to do.
Shae did improve this season, but that may be because of the writing, don’t get what she actually wants to portray, does she really care for Sansa and Tyrion? Or is she lying like in the books?

I voted for Gwendolyn Christie, but Natalie Dormer was a close second. But how did the actress playing Shae get nominated? She is EASILY the worst actor or actress on the entire show, with absolutely no range. And it’s too bad because I actually like the book version of Shae. It was sad when Tyrion strangled her, but now I’m looking forward to it just to get her off the show so that I won’t be distracted by her “acting.” At best, she can almost handle lines that don’t require much emotion. But when she has to do anything else? Look out. There’s a scene where she’s complaining that Tyrion is worried about what his father will think of her presence even though, “HE’S THREE HUNDRED MILES AWAY!!!!” I’m sorry, but that is just horrific.

While I appreciate the difficulty of working in extremely cold weather, I think Ygritte’s character wasn’t particularly difficult to portray in any other respect. Leslie Rose did a great job, but these awards are supposed to be about acting chops, not physical beauty nor the likability of a particular character.
Gwendoline Christie’s portrayal of Brienne required more attention to the details. The warrior woman is at the margins of society in many aspects, including her unusual height and strength, her skill with a sword and above all, her deeply rooted sense of chivalry in a world that no longer places any value on it. In the hands of a lesser actress, Brienne could easily have come across as either cartoonish or as not androgynous enough.
The other supporting actresses also performed well, including some that weren’t even nominated: Carice van Houten (Melisandre), Amrita Acharia (Irri), Laura Predelska (Quaithe the masked mystic) and Esme Bianco (Ros). The latter managed to give her character a moral compass in spite of atrocious writing that gave her a lot of screen time but zero opportunity to take any initiative.
In the end, though, my vote goes to Gwendoline Christie.

Jay Sutherland makes a very good point in saying that a lot of people seem to equate an actor’s
performance that is not completely the same as the book character with bad acting, which is a little unfair. Adaptation and the temperament of the actor also plays a role and some roles are obviously easier to to adadpt directly than others. -n this case Gwen Christie and Jemma Whelan (in terms of their physical transformation) seems to have done the best method acting while Leslie’s spontaniety made Ygritte

I know something! It’s Rose Leslie for me! She nailed her role, was brilliant, fun, and without her the Jon storyline in S2 would have been pretty boring. She saved it.
Gwen was great but she will have a good chance of getting my vote come S3. Sibell was definitely better in S2 but although her scene with Tyrion was great, that was especially since Peter Dinklage just owns his role! Natalie Dormer? She was fine but again, not that memorable. We shall see in S3. Gemma seems like a very sweet person (on the interview I saw with her) but I was disappointed with her take on Asha/Yara. Not at all how I pictured the character (perhaps non-readers could take a better liking to her). For me she is one of the very few casting choices I dislike. That said, her last scene with Theon was touching and she did very well. Anyway – Rose Leslie (“You know nothing Jon Snow… but you have nice hair”)

I guess that I am in the minority to think that Gwen’s acting seemed forced and overthe-top, especially Renly’s death scene. Way too dramatic for someone who just (seemingly) met the king and had no prior reason to feel so attached to Renly. I dont recall the show ever hinting at Briennes long time crush on him so it seemed out of place and confusing. Even her delivery of “I’m no Lady” to Catelyn seemed off.

I really hope D&D put to rest her boot stomping, whiny, acting just like her asshole brother attitude and move forward into season 3 with her as the badass, yet fair, beautiful Khaleesi we all know her to be. The end of season 2 when Dany gets her mojo back was a high point. Season 3 better keep her acting like a Targaryen Khaleesi and not a demanding little brat or I and many others will be totally disappointed. We had to wait 9 episodes this year to see the Dany we love. I hope D&D start off with the Khaleesi in episode 1 next year and keep her character strong and toughass like she was at the end of season 2…

well, I agree with you because I don´t like her acting but the bad writing is not her fault.

Aegon the Conqueror,
Aww she even thanked the fans for a WiC fanbase award? That’s really awesome! I think she does an awesome job as Osha. It’s so cool how she bases her movements on raccoon behavior.
Anyone have a link to her thanking WiC?
ArthurQuote Reply
Gwen Christie all the way! Sure, she is much prettier than the “book Brienne”, but in terms of her nailing the characters personality, and behavior Gwen nailed it!

Zack,
But this season Iain Glen was the male lead in Daenerys her storyline, still he was nominated for supporting actor.

I’m going to vote for Ygritte despite hating the changes they made to Jon Snow’s storyline.

andrea,
I dont think the writing was poor in those scenes. I just didn’t care for the delivery of some of the lines and I felt the transition from total devastation to “not that way” all seriousness was a wee bit forced and it did not seem genuine.
RygarQuote Reply
What I loved about Rose was that I didn’t feel like she was acting. Someone posted that Ygritte is not a difficult role to play, and I get that point, but it takes skill to steal every scene you’re in and Rose blew everyone out of the water. Not just herplayfulness, but also the way she delivered each line. The scene when she and Kit argued about who was in the North first was one of my favorite of the whole series so far. I dont really care for Kit’s acting chops, but he floored me in that scene. And I think its because Rose was so damn good that she brought the best out of him.
And shes cuter than Dormer. Hopefully in S3 we can then rank her boobies.
RygarQuote Reply
Voted Gwendoline Christie. No matter how well Rose Leslie plays Ygritte … I hate Ygritte lol
KGQuote Reply
Rero,
Fair enough, but if I recall his screen time this season was really cut down. Unfortunately :(
Where until Blackwater, I don’t think Stannis was without Melisandre for more than a few moments.
I suppose it’s a judgement call on an individual character.

winney dah poobar,
Just because I make my point succinctly doesn’t make it invalid. I don’t like the character of Ygritte, so no actress can make it interesting to me. I don’t like Jon or his story, either. Sorry if that ruins your self-published fanwhacking stories that you write late at night.
KGQuote Reply
This is a showdown between Gwen and Rose. though i feel the scales have tipped towards Gwen.
But the absence of Natalia Tena, who plays the wilding Osha, among the nominees is a serious crime. Natalia plays the character with the uncanny ability which is unparalleled by any actor on TV.
MustafaQuote Reply
The best parts out of these were Brienne and Margaery. Both were very well played but I voted for Gwendoline because she had a harder role to prepare for. Her dedication, where she even trained to reshape her body, together with her acting made her an amazing addition to the series.
There were several others that did great but none had quite as interesting characters to play. I can’t stand whiners but unfortunately I have to say that I still can’t fully come to terms with the shows Shae.
Tywin’s BastardQuote Reply
Where is Natalia Tena’s Osha? If available I would’ve voted for her (surely better than Whelan and Kikelli at least?). In lieu of Tena, I voted for Christie just over Leslie, both who was outstanding this season. Dormer was also fantastic, but her lack of screen time ultimately gave my preferences to the other two. I’ve never been a fan of Shae’s – in the book or the show, and I find Kikelli’s performance a bit listless, but still serviceable. Similarly with Whelan, although she did knock some scenes out of the park (her first scene I thought was excellent).

Rygar,
We are in the minority (I think I’ve counted three of us in this thread who don’t think Gwendoline is a particularly good actress).
Can we clarify if we’re voting for “most like the character in the book” or “best supporting actress”? Because if it’s the latter, people need to realise that Gwendoline actually can’t act particularly well. I’m with you on the “forced” thing. The crying scene and the pledging allegiance to Catelyn scene were actually poor.
BruceQuote Reply
Bruce,
i agree so you can up that number to four. Gwendoline’s scenes are cringe worthy to be honest. she matches up to Brienne’s description in the book pretty well but her acting is mediocre at best.

Gg,
I voted for Sibel but I disagree that she’s much like Shae in the books. Her acting is terrific though. She especially nails the small subtle moments.
Ser PounceQuote Reply
A woman thinks you may in fact be missing the point of the style of Gwen’s interpretation of Brienne. In the book she is described as being awkward in every way, verbally, socially, in appearance…except when she is fighting. When she fighting, she is on fire. This is exactly what this woman sees when she sees Brienne on screen. Exactly. Gwendoline Christie in person is VERY different from this character, look up an interview on YouTube and see the difference. GC is a feminine, sociable, chatty fashionista. Her Brienne is flawless IMO (I won’t nitpick little details like the armor thing from the book). It’s OK if it doesn’t turn you on, but when people note that she looks awkward, I just want to jump up and scream ,”YES YES YES she’s SUPPOSED to look awkward, a little off, that’s BRIENNE! ” She’s an outcast, an oddball. A woman loves her.
Mrs. H’gharQuote Reply
Bruce,
saying “clearly” seems to misunderstand the subjective nature of the evaluation. Rose Leslie was great but i don’t see how she was ‘clearly’ better than Sibell, who has already won more than one best actress award. I’m not saying that should be considered when evaluating her performance, but I think it’s anything but ‘clear’ in an objective sense who is better.
Ser PounceQuote Reply
Tywin’s Bastard,
I think the show’s Shae is inferior in the sense that she functions better in the story as more of a closed book. Having said that, most of the show characters are inferior, and acting is a different thing
Ser PounceQuote Reply
A woman would just like to point out that this voting poll is strictly for the acting, not a comparison of how different they are from the book be that better or worse. FYI in case you missed that point above.
Mrs. H’gharQuote Reply
Mrs. H’ghar,
i didn’t miss it “acting is a different thing”. I just think comparing the adapted character is interesting, if irrelevant to the poll
Ser PounceQuote Reply
Mrs, for once, we disagree. I do not think Gwen has proven herself as an actress. I do agree that Gwen fits the role and looks amazing for the part, but she has not impressed me with her acting ability as of yet.
Also off topic, but I just watched an episode of True Blood. Pardon me, but that show Fucking Blows. Listen, I am all for Fire and Blood to venture off and do other things, but man I have to say that True Blood is NOT worth your time. I have come to truly respect all the Mods here and I say this with pure sincerity, come back. Lol. I know you are also working on your writing, but TB doesn’t deserve you. Jesus I sound like a horny schoolgirl.
RygarQuote Reply
Rygar,
True Blood is a supernatural sitcom with male models having sex with Sookie and other models showing skin. That’s all it’s ever been.
Game of Thrones is an epic. You can’t compare the two.
True Blood = a 5yr olds fingerprinting.
Game of Thrones = The Mona Lisa.
True Blood is just suppose to entertain you. Game of Thrones is suppose to push the boundaries of television and give you an epic movie quality experience.

Lol. True Blood is a fun show to watch if you just except it for what it is. I watch it every Sunday but you’re right it doesn’t compare to GoT at all because it’s a totally different kind of show.

Anyway I wasnt really trying to bash TB as much as trying to tell FaB how much he’s missed
RygarQuote Reply
A woman is OK with differing opinions, it’s cool. Comparing True Blood and Game of Thrones is truly an apples vs. oranges situation. Too different to compare, but Jaqen and I watch TB purely for the LOLz. GoT is an epic medieval fantasy, TB a contemporary vampire fantasy – both have their merits IMO. A woman can appreciate many genres, Shakespeare one minute and Jackie Chan the next…it’s all good entertainment.

I would think the clear front-runners here are Gwen Christie and Gemma Whelan – and because of my determined love for those who have the unenviable task of winning over fanboys when the chips are down, I voted for Gemma. Reasoning? Gwen Christie has done a great job, and she virtually channels Brienne physically and emotionally – when I first saw her on screen I said, my God…she IS Brienne…but Gemma had to take the character and sell it while having been cast against the physical type for Asha established by the book, as well as carry the baggage of the unpopular name change, AND endure what has to be one of the most ridiculous fanbase backlashes against casting I have ever been embarrassed to see. Go back and watch Gemma’s scenes with Alfie – she owns every one of them. The other actresses have all done great work, but the sheer amount of visceral and frankly offensive negativity regarding Gemma Whelan’s casting predisposed me to cheer her on in this role – and she has completely justified it. It is NOT the Asha of the books – it is the Yara of the show, and Gemma Whelan has made the character hers. That is what, in my opinion, gives her the edge in this ACTING poll, not the it-matches-what-was-in-my-head-while-reading-the-book poll. I hope they give Gemma/Yara more this coming season and keep the importance of the Asha-Arc intact for however long the show has to continue.

I loved all the actresses and agreee with others that Esme and Tena should have been on this list.
That said, I voted for Dormer. I loved Gwen and can’t wait to see her next season. She did an excellent job! But I felt Margery’s conversation with Little Finger, her interaction with her brother and Renly, and the scene with Joffery were outstanding.

Great point. I voted for Gwen but I’m already regretting it slightly. If I could vote again I’d vote for Rose Leslie or Gemma Whelan as I think they brought a bit more range and versatility. I also agree with the backlash for Gemma Whelan to be a bit embarassing. I think a lot of people were expecting some serious sex appeal with the character, and to me her character was never about that (in fact, didn’t the books express that she was a fairly plain looking woman?). Sure, Yara is as boisterous as Asha but she still gives a great performance. I think her more rugged and masculine interpretation is more believable as a leader of the Ironborn. In the books she often flaunted the fact that she was a woman, which I always imagined would have antagonize her men and cause resentment.

Gwendoline Christie got my vote. I liked the way she brought Brienne from the book to the screen. Her interactions with Jaime were enjoyable and they will bring more to the next season. As for the rest I applaud their performances and dedication.

Gwendoline Christie was it for me this season. It is not easy to convey soo much through what is a primarily physical role. Jason Momoa did it last year, and Christie did it this year. There is something to be said about an actress who can trully use all the tools of the trade to create such a vivid and engaging character. Brienne Of Tarth could easily have turned into a charicature played by someone of a lesser talent than Ms. Christie. So kudos to her!
Still, Carice Van Houten and Sibel Kekili are impressive in their own right!

I wasn’t partcularly impressed with any of the acting by the five named. But Brienne was simply wooden. Very poor. Ygritte was annoying. Out of the above I thought Yara was the best acted. But the little girl who plays Arya easily outperforms any of them, as does the older sister. A very weak field.
