We switch from silly to serious this week, as our next category is best death scene. This is a new category this year, but we felt that there were some great final moments this season and we suspect that there will be much deliberation over which scene should be considered tops. Tough to choose between Yoren, Rodrik and Luwin. With Luwin and Rodrik I had tears in my eyes. But Ser Rodrik gets it simply cause of the way he took Theon down to nothing with his final comment and the quite peace as he told Bran he was “off to see your father.”

No, I would not want to live in a world without dragons, as I would not want to live in a world without magic, for that is a world without mystery …. And that, I fear, for any reasoning, conscious being, would be the cruelest trick of all.
Aegon the ConquerorQuote Reply
Tough decision, all of these scenes were well done, I think Jon and Quorin had the least emotional impact due to Quorin’s lack of screen time in the series. I had to go with Luwin, not only was the death scene itself very true to the source material, but the acting showcased by both Donald Sumpter and the boys was incredible. Closest I’ve come to crying while watching the show. Close second was Rodrik, Alfie Allen was remarkable in that scene!

This is really tough. Yoren’s was epic badassery heroic; Rodrik’s was gut wrentchingly painful to witness; Luwin was heartfelt and weepy; Renly’s was super cool and ominious; Qhorin’s sucked. So definitely not the Halfhand. Renly’s would have been better if Brienne didn’t ruin it for me (her performance). Man, so tough between the other three. My heart says Luwin, my agita says Rodrick, and my balls say Yoren.
Gotta go with the twins. Yoren it is.

Qhorin’s death was fail compared to the books imo, didn’t make any impact on me at all. Renly’s was slightly disappointing but that’s because for some reason I thought he got his throat cut in the books so I was a bit underwhelmed by the stab.
I went for Rodrik cause it was the most intense imo but both maester luwin/yoren scenes were also pretty awesome.

After Ned died, the murder of Ser Rodrik and maester Luwin moved me to tears. I
went back several chapters just to relive their noble acts. With GoT I did not feel the
emotional impact or witness RC , QH major act leading up to their departing scene.
Ironically Jory Cassel and Ned had a great sword fight scene ( S1) which was a win
to view. Donald Sumpter’s last scenes with Bran and Rickard with Osha simply
stole the show. There was a poignant goodbye and a strong impression of the
values and wisdom he shared with them. There were no distractions in that
scene and it was short and effective. Oddly they were in a hurry to leave Winterfell.
Pared with lengthy scenes at Kings Landing brothels and pubs this was well
struck and easier on the budget I would guess. Great acting is the key.

Sir Rodrick, since they changed up the way he died from the book a little bit. It caught me off guard and his words hit home. Not to mention Theon botched it, making it even more painful.

Qhorin’s and Yoren’s Deaths were a bit of a let down to me honestly, so no way I can vote for either.
I quite liked the Shadowborn morphing into daddy Stannis’s face as he killed Renly, but the way the scene played out was underwhelming to me and seemed like they made due with what they could and not achieved what they set out to do.
While I will greatly miss Sumpter’s performance as Maester Luwin, the actual death scene was off-camera for the most part.
So it simply must be the death of Ser Rodrik!
That scene was one of the best changes from the book and a very dramatic moment with great performances all around!

Qhorin dies at Jon’s hands – They BOTCHED it by not having Qhorin’s last words “Is ur blade sharp Snow?” which meant he wanted Jon to kill him. without those words, non-book readers watching the show with me were like WTF? WHY DID JON KILL HIM?????
–
Renly Baratheon is assassinated – Although this scene was done very well, i just hated the look on Renly’s face…
–
Yoren gets taken down – Yorens scene was brutally awesome “i always hated crossbows!!” but its the rest of the changes in the scenes after that one that i hated, making his death seem it was for nothing..
–
Ser Rodrik Cassel is executed – Cassels death wasn’t even how that happened in the books, so that one (even though it got me crying as well) didnt win imo.
–
Since Maester Luwin, Yoren and Ser Rodrik Cassel’s scenes were by-far the most epic death scenes this season, i would have to go with Maester Luwin. that scene had me BALLING…
Luwin was always that “Bilbo” character, the one the seemed should NEVER die, and he did… quite sadly. im very happy they gave his death screentime, instead of just hearing about it like in the books. A GREAT change, and every time i think of Luwin saying to the boys “I’ll be fine, I’ll be right here..!” makes me choke up :(:(

The Yoren death scene was epic. But the Cassel one was more meaningful and while the action wasn’t as great the acting was amazing. Cassel’s death wins my vote.
Luwin’s death scene was sad and touching and well done.
Renly’s death scene was a huge disappointment. I’d be surprised if anyone votes for it.
Quorin’s death scene was also a huge disappointment, a shadow of what it was in the book. I’m not normally one to bitch about that kind of thing but the whole Jon/Quorin story was badly mishandled.
JamesQuote Reply
Master Yoren and Rodrik Cassell Screwed me up on so many levels. I cried heavily at both scenes. Though I think Rodrik was the most painful since in the books, he died off screen. I felt I had been punched in the face when Theon so brutally ended Rodrik. Master Yoren I knew was going to happen. Didn’t lessen the blow but the shock as a reader was not as devastating.

Well, I would love to say Renly or Rodrik, which were both awesome due to shock value and emotion respectively. Luwin was also pretty good. Qhorin was terrible, since they elected to dumb down his character to fit more sexual innuendos for Ygritte.

Of the choices above, Yoren and Rodrick probably top the list for this woman, but Luwin and Renly were also wonderful scenes. Qorin’s scene was good, but could have been great (as many have mentioned) with just a few added lines. Ah well, can’t do it over. So Yoren, super NW mentor/ninja, or Rodrik, super Winterfell guardian/warrior. Mmmmm, will have to think on this more before voting.

Yoren – total badassery (Crossbows take too long to load)
Luwin – Moved me to tears, Donald Sumpter is a fantastic actor and the kids were great
Rodrick – Intense, awesome emotions from the kids and Alfie Allen and Ron Donachie nailed it
Jon and the Halfhand – meh… zero emotions and tbh the whole Jon arc in S2 was bad except for the scenes with Ygritte and even then he comes off as dumb

I haven’t voted every time, because I often don’t have clear enough memories of the scenes you pick.
This one is both really easy and really difficult though, because these scenes are all memorable and cool. Where it gets tricky is making the final call though. In consideration of how they affected me like a gut punch, I have easily narrowed the choice to Luwin or Yoren. I believe either one deserves this.
I think I’m going to give it to Luwin here, because it’s not a stereotypically badass and glorious combat death, but instead, just PURE emotion, the senseless stabbing, the encounter with the young Starks (oh Rickon…) and then Osha’s professionalism. I loved everything about that death scene except that it happened at all.
Yoren went out like a champ, and easily deserves the runner-up slot.
ZackQuote Reply
Fairley easy. Several good ones, but Rodriks was just pure greatness! And I hope it will set the tone for some of the future epic emotional scenes. Yorens deserves an honorable mention, though.

Everytime I see your name I think of Bolton of course… reminds me of a paper I did on torture back in high school. One line I quoted (I forget the source now) stands out in my memory that seems like it could be the Bolton motto…
“The secret of torture, like the secret of French cuisine, is that nothing is unthinkable…. The human body is like a foodstuff, to be grilled, pounded, filleted. Every opening exists to be stuffed, all flesh to be carved off the bone.”
That line disturbed me then and has stayed with me.
darquemodeQuote Reply
Maybe I’m dead on the inside, or maybe it’s because I couldn’t actually watch their death scenes with my eyes open (I used the old hide the eyes with my hands trick), but I couldn’t go with Rodrik or Luwin. I like how they built Renly up as a potential so quickly. Not enough time to really feel it I guess. In the end, Yoren fighting and dying to save the lives of the not-yet-members-of the night’s watch was suspenseful, moving, emotional, and way improved upon from the book. Yoren by a mile for me.
JillQuote Reply
Damn. Hard to choose between Luwin, Yoren and Rodrik. I voted without reading the comments.
I felt I did not get to know Qhorin enough to be truly moved by his death.
Renly’s was OK, but I expected it to be more bloody (as in blood spraying out everywhere), not for mere love of gore but because I did not feel the horror I was supposed to feel in that scene.
So.
I loved Yoren and he died a hero.
Maester Luwin made me cry; Donald Sumpter was IMMENSE, Natalia Tena did her job, and the child actors were spot on; bonus for seeing and hearing more of Rickon, the saga’s unsung hero.
But I had to vote for Rodrik. His death surprised me, and he trolled Theon right to the end (everybody trolls Theon, it’s a given), even with his neck refusing to break cleanly under Theon’s clumsy strokes. I chose this death not just because it highlighted Rodrik’s character up to the end, but because it also highlighted THEON’s character. Theon wins my “Character who meant nothing to me in the books (until ADWD) and has grown on me most in the TV series” award; I’m caring for him much more than I expected, and I feel that Alfie Allen is an amazing actor and he’ll grow up to do incredible things in his future works. His reaction to killing Rodrik was Oscar-worthy.
“Now you are truly lost.” This earned my vote; the last-minute rapport between these two, a harbinger of things to come.

Made the stupid mistake of saying Seven Kingdoms, Aegon did in fact only conquer six of the seven. The Rhoynar of Dorne remaning pretty much indepent until a marriage brought their kingdom into the fold. No wonder the Martells hate the Lannisters and Baratheons.
Aegon the ConquerorQuote Reply
Despite my love for how Yoren was portrayed onscreen, I have to go with Rodrick’s death. One of my favourite scenes of the season. To me, it worked better than in the books. And everyone was magnificent. Rodrick’s defiance, Bran’s pleas, and Theon, sealing his fate with the Ironborn the Stark way and botching it. Couldn’t hold back the tears and didn’t even try.
Luwin’s death on the other hand… I liked it, I wanted to love it, but something didn’t quite click for me. I kept wondering how did he manage to make it from the courtyard to the Godswood with that wound and hold out for so long.
I didn’t like how they managed Renly and Qhorin’s deaths. I liked the buildup to Renly’s but not the death per se, to my ignorant eyes the editing seemed off. Qhorin’s death would have been ok if I hadn’t read the books. But then if I hadn’t read the books I doubt I would care much about him. I don’t think the show meant for us to care much past how it would affect Jon to kill him, but that way I think Jon’s character is impoverished. I understand if the show didn’t want to invest so much emotional capital in someone who was to be killed off straight away, but Jon’s journey without that relationship was so much flatter this season to me!

Point well made. For as many details the television displays for the viewer a fair
number of written detail is deleted in order to streamline the story in order to make
it profitable as an investment. It was perhaps visually interesting to say goodbye
to maester Luwin leaning against that Weirwood tree (?) Did the Direwolves take
him there as a dying wish (?) Summer and Shaggy alerted Osha,Bran and Rickard
to Luwin’s person. I miss the dilapidated fort that Yoren and the recruits fought from.
After re-watching the episode ( HBO is repeating GoT S2 at present ) I was dis-
appointed to see him go down with the 1st arrow, even if he fought on with heroic
badassery! At no point did he reply to Lorch that ” the Night’s Watch takes no
interest in any war or king’. He was was just impulsive and pissed. Don’t get me
wrong, I think the scene was a good job, I just can’t help but remember how strategic
book Yoren was in keeping his men safe and persistent in stating his indifference to
the war. The confusion that followed may have been intentional so that Sandor’s
men would catch Arya, Gendry, Hot Pie and Lommy. Winterfell scenes were improved
upon by Alfie/Theon’s performance. Ser Rodrik did had a great line to diss Theon.
As viewers we are receiving a great series with a crew of talented individuals,
complaints aside I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Life isn’t perfect and neither is a
production of it.

He had just had that gut-wrenching talk with Arya–initiating her prayer–and you know that the lives of so many characters lie in his hands. Just after he dies, Lommy Greenhands gets murdered and all the rest are taken hostage to a terrible fate. Every time Arya gets close enough to feel safe with someone she loses that person and Yoren’s death was all tangled up with that dynamic for me. Plus, it was epic.
