Quick Hits: Giveaway, NYCC moot, GRRM interview and Thrones references
- Tower of the Hand: A Flight of Sorrows is days away from release. To celebrate its release, we have partnered with ToTH to give away some cool Thrones swag. To win you have to like us and Tower of the Hand: A Flight of Sorrows on Facebook, then share something from their Page to your Facebook friends. Head over to the A Flight of Sorrows Facebook page for all the details!
- Heading to NYCC? The fabulous Ladies of Ice and Fire have arranged a meet-up for Game of Thrones/Ice & Fire fans in NYC to kick off the event. Hit up their Facebook page for the time and place and to book your spot.
- Speaking of cons, RingCon was held in Germany this past weekend and they had quite a few Game of Thrones cast members there to talk about the show. You can find some photos here (Jason Momoa rules!). If anyone knows of any videos or reports from the GoT panel, link it in the comments below and we will add it to the post.
- Adria’s News recently published a very in-depth interview with George R. R. Martin. They talk about the books mostly, but a little about the TV show near the end, as well. One new detail we learn is that the production was very close to using Spain as a filming location, but ultimately chose Croatia instead. There are spoilers from later books in the interview, but they are hidden, so it is safe to read for fans of the TV show.
- Fast Co. Create has an interesting look into the making of the season two finale’s final scene. Lots of VFX work was required to get the shot just the way David & Dan wanted it.
- The new fall TV season has started up in the US and Game of Thrones references are all the rage once again. New Girl, 2 Broke Girls, The Office and Glee have all used some Thrones-related jokes.
- Lastly, Bryan Cogman spoke at the recent Talking TV Drama event at the Galway Film Centre in Ireland, where he confirmed he is writing episode five of season three. You can read a report of his full interview here.
Have you already read all the books and/or don't care about spoilers? You can reveal all the spoilers in the comments with the click of a link below.

A small piece of news that I haven’t seen reported here is that Cogman just confirmed that the episode he has written for Season 3 is E5.
The source is this post from Pod at Westeros.org:

Strangely enough, I never before thought about there being another (alive) copy of Pyat Pree (as far as the series is concerned). :D
PepiQuote Reply
It’s neat to see Quaithe without mask, and smiling and happy.
To my mind, the last Pyat Pree scene would have been a million times less silly if we had had a quick shot of one of his doppelgangers running away on fire.

The Martin interview was done, I assume, at the same time as the Asshai one, but it is very interesting. The write-up of the Cogman interview was nice as well. Thanks!
AlanQuote Reply
Is this the first time that Martin’s even thrown a date out there for The Winds of Winter? I’ve always hoped/thought it would come out in 2014 and it sounds like that’s what George is shooting for. Now whether we get the book then or not remains to be seen.

RingCon was absolutely amazing! We had a panel with Natalia Tena and Joe Dempsie, one with Ian Glenn (what a presence on stage!), one with Finn Jones (coolest guy ever), one with Miltos Yerolemu (awesome as always) and two with Jason Momoa (he simply owned the Con, drinking so much beer I would`ve probably died. He always stayed on the Con parties pretty late). In his second panel Drogos speech about his gift to Rheago was put on the screen since he promised in the first panel he`d do the speech live if it was put on the big screen. He only managed like half of it though. I think it`s on youtube already. He also said that this scene in the show was the greatest moment of his acting career. He absolutely loved it (which I think you can see on screen).
On the last day there was a GoT panel with all the cast except for Jason (he was up for a fan photo shooting at the time) but we didn`t get any new information there. No one really bothered asking questions about season 3 since it was pretty obvious they wouldn`t answer those. Like I already posted the only tiny bit of information I was able to get was from a little chat with Joe Dempsie who told me that Kit`s broken leg delayed filming quite a bit so shooting in Iceland will probably last until December. He also couldn`t quite understand why they are shooting the Iceland scenes so late in the year with only 4 hours of daylight.
Only bad thing about the Con was that Maisie Williams had to cancel because she was needed in Belfast for shooting :/
There are tons of pictures and stuff on the RingCon message board and on their facebook page so check those out if you`re interested.
++edit: Oh yeah I forgot to mention we really got a video message from the man GRRM personally during the closing ceremony which was beyond awesome since it came totally unexpected!

Please say the deleted scenes Martin mentioned, especially the one with Martin’s cameo, still exist and we might get to see them someday in an outtake DVD. Please, please, please!
One would gladly ante up an outrageous prepayment if that would help.

I also went to RingCon and it was really really really cool.
I just want to add an anecdote to G_Lee’s comment: Joe Dempsie, Finn Jones and Natalia Tena are just a great bunch of guys.
Saturday night at the party, one of my friend had a nervous breakdown and broke into loud, loud tears in the middle of the hotel. Joe and Finn were walking by and got to us and gave her a hug, and they basically stayed talking with us for an hour (at some point Finn Jones was wearing my friend’s tiara). And when Natalia Tena got here, she started screaming at everyone that “life is shit and we all die and we should all enjoy it while we can”, and she was just the nicest. Crazy, really crazy, but so nice.
Oh and Ian Glenn mentioned that he was getting back on set as of yesterday! (that was the only remotely useful piece of information in this message).

Oh and one funny thing about this photo of Khal Drogo and Dany sitting on the Iron Throne : http://www.flickr.com/photos/28774445@N07/8070489838/in/set-72157631729538450
My girlfriend asked Jason Momoa what would be his perfect happy ending for GoT, to which he responded “Dany my love, get the fuck on stage”. Out of the 20 Danys in the room, one was audacious enough to get up on stage. Then Jason sat her on the throne next to him and he spitted out beer all over the place. It was fun.
Renaud Besse-BourdierQuote Reply
Haha nice story. The whole convention was just pure awesome, so how the hell could your friend get a nervous breakdown there? The closest I came to a breakdown was Saturday night after that last Caipirinha (which I barely remember ;D)
G_LeeQuote Reply
Can somebody tell me what the GoT reference in glee was?

Jorah’s picture was steamy and Momoa sounded like the life of the party. Happy to those who were able to attend!

I hope your friend is all right! Natalia Tena sounds absolutely delightful.

Sorry about that, I tried and tried to find it on Youtube but came up empty, so had to use Hulu. Here was the exchange:
Sam: You can’t wear that stuff in here. You have to know how this stuff works, it’s like Game of Thrones.
Artie: Yeah, the peace between us and the truly popular kids is weak. Winter is coming, and it’s not going to take much for us to get smacked down to the bottom again.

GRRM never mentioned dates, the translation is wrong. He said It won’t be out this year or next, I hope the year after but I don’t like to make predictions, he also never said how many pages he wrote. He said he had a lot of pages that needed revising.
Great interview though, just need to translate/publish it better

Is that Sam and Pippin sitting on the Iron Throne? Awesome!

Also, good news about WINDS. 400 pages is more than I expected. But overall, I think progress on this book has been pretty slow so far. It’s been over 1.5 years since he finished DANCE and he’s barely begun the next one (only 200 pages are really polished and revised) because, despite saying that he wants to focus more on writing, he’s still been doing a lot of travel (to conventions, signings, writing workshops, etc.).
Also, he recently blogged about how he’s written 100 manuscript pages for the new Worlds of Ice and Fire book (with Elio from Westeros), which I find rather depressing. 100 pages of back history?!? As much as I’m interested in the history of Westeros, I’m a 1000 times more interested in him writing WINDS. And there’s the 4th Dunk and Egg novella coming out soon…
I still think there’s just no way he can keep ahead of the show. Back in 2009 when the pilot started filming, he was probably hoping that he’d be finished WINDS by now.

That reference on The Office when Dwight teaches Erin to speak Dothraki was priceless. It wasn’t just a reference either, it was the entire episodes plot for those two characters.

Hah! I wonder if Once just spoiled the ending of the series/books for all of us and, in the end, it’ll be the Lady Olenna sitting the Iron Thorn… err… Throne.

That was a great GRRM interview!
The best news I got from it is the 6th book won’t split the characters. I didn’t like how he did that with the last two. I don’t like having to go backwards in time to catchup with the other half of characters. One continuous timeline makes more sense IMO.
Other good news is its going to be another back breaker, 1,500 pages. Awesome!!!

Rainn Wilson is a fan. Last year, he was tweeting about GOT (book and show) all the time.

If she’s filming in Morocco, does it necessarily mean she’ll be a part of Dany’s storyline or are there other Westeros stuff being filmed there?

Great interview with GRRM. He always seems to give interviewees a lot of time and very considered responses, I have a lot of respect for that.
I disagree with him though that ASOIAF is one singular entity in the same way Lord of the Rings is. LOTR was written as one volume and (I believe against Tolkein’s wishes) split into three by the publisher to make it more palatable / saleable. The books in the ASOIAF series have obviously been written and published one at a time and are really quite distinct from each other in style and content, particularly as we know, post-book 3.
I also didn’t realise the RR initials weren’t exactly genuine! He kind of fudged the answer to that question so it seems pretty obvious to me that that was a purposeful link to Tolkein (probably a request from his publisher).
RossQuote Reply
Ross,
Yeah, I realised the initials weren’t genuine when he said to Sophie Turner (whose name wasn’t available on Twitter) “RR are always good initials!”
EleanorQuote Reply
I think I read recently that once all these book tours/events stop by the end of the year, GRRM said he’s going to lock himself away & do a lot of writing for a long stretch. So, my hope is that he gets the bulk of the book done by the end of next year. Of course, then there could be editing and revising/rewrites to do.

Lya,
Here is link to her casting page.
Well, according to her page she’s not willing to take her cloths off, so nothing down and dirty.
Didn’t Dany come across some young female slave owner in Astapor that was a real bitch, and of course she might just be a new addition to her Khal, but then again she looks somewhat like Emelia (at least I think so).
The reason I mentioned the last part is this, might be a little cryptic.

Yeah, Ring Con was an amazing experience even if i feared till Thursday not “having” to go there. After Maisie Williams had to cancel, i was there mostly because of Jason Momoa, who’s shooting in Toronto Canada at the moment. So i feared he would have to cancel as well. When i arrived at the Con on Friday at about 9:30 am, he wasn’t even there. Now i got to know that he hasn’t arrived before 4:30 pm, not long before his first photosession started.
Jason on stage was his normal self and still did a good job in talking slow and understandable :)
I had to miss most of the panels of the other GoT Cast members. I was at Miltos’, wanted to go to Iain’s, but was caught in a conversation with some friends i’ve met there. Could only see the first minutes of the GoT cast panel, cos Jason “waited” at his photosession for me. :)
And i was at Juri Stanossek’s panel who, together with his Company, did the Visual Effects for Game of Thrones.
The Con isn’t small, but not too big either, so i was able to see Miltos & Jason at the party on Saturday, accidentially i’ve even seen Jason doing a Jack Sparrow impersonation together with a JS cosplayer.
The best moments for me, besides GoT stuff :
Sean Astin & Billy Boyd sitting on the Iron Throne with Billy Body singing Pippin’s song & Sean Astin reading LotR ( and i’m not even a LotR fan )
The proposal on stage. Normally i hate it being done in public, but where else would you have Sean Astin bringing the ring
Game of Throne related :
Jason acting his perfect ending for GoT with one of the Daenerys cosplayers
Him creating the fellowship of the horn or beer, whatever you prefer. Jason brought a drinking horn on stage and shared the beer in it with all the actors and moderators to which Mark Fergusen said Jason created a new fellowship.
George R R Martin’s video message.
To have had a few minutes with Jason after his autograph session was over to again meet the private guy, who’s totally different to the person on stage.

I just realised that part 2 and part 2 of the James Cosmo interview I posted aren’t about GoT. Would be nice if a mod could delete them for me.

Abyss,
Thanks for posting these! I love the interview with James Cosmo–what a gentleman! Favourite bit: “every actor in the show brings their own talent…HBO…they don’t employ shmucks. You know? Everyone’s there for a reason because they’re bloody good at what they do.” (on his fellow cast mates, 6:27-6:40) Don’t employ shmucks indeed. I do love a good Scottish man–always so blunt, but in the most charming fashion!

Made some updates to the post…
I added this fascinating look into the making of the final scene of season two. Definitely worth a read, a lot of effort went into making that scene work.
I also moved the interviews with Pradelska and Hanmore to our new interview round-up post, which also includes the interviews linked here by Abyss (thanks for the heads up!) as well as a few more.

One of my fav scenes (D&D better put it in) will be when the Reeds make their pledge…
“To Winterfell we pledge the faith of Greywater,” they said together. “Hearth and heart and harvest we yield up to you, my lord. Our swords and spears and arrows are yours to command. Grant mercy to our weak, help to our helpless, and justice to all, and we shall never fail you.”
“I swear it by earth and water,” said the boy in green.
“I swear it by bronze and iron,” his sister said.
“We swear it by ice and fire,” they finished together.
To me that well be just as epic as when Brienne swore her oath to Cat… Sorry if I bother anyone bring this up again but it’s really something I can’t wait to see brought to life.
