Halloween, Game of Thrones-style
By Ours is the Fury on in General.

Games of Thrones has been a steady inspiration for cosplayers at conventions since the show began, and Halloween this year had even more fans transforming into their favorite characters.
Here are some Halloween costume highlights from across the web and from WiC.net readers themselves, via our Twitter and Tumblr.

This is just a sampling of what fans have put together. The official Game of Thrones tumblr and the GoT reddit have some other fantastic costumes on display.

Ours is the Fury: The amount of work that fans put into their costume is jaw-dropping. I love that people get their pets in on the fun, too.

dressing up for Halloween as Dany or any other ASoIaF character in 1996 or 1998 or 2000 or 2002 = super obscure and cool.

dressing up as Dany or any other GoT character anytime past 2011 after it has been whored out and practically become a cultural meme = totally f**king lame.

if you dressed as any GoT character this Halloween you might have well just dressed as Psy …. pretty much the same thing.

for the sake of Zeus people … do something marginally original …. dress as Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser or Elric of Melnibone.

when did being a nerd become so pathetically easy and corporately whorish and simply another incarnation of mainstream blandness?

No need for hipster nerdism. People don’t have to have loved ASOIAF for ten years to have cred. I’m glad so many people have embraced GoT, it means we get years of the show instead one measly season.

  41. Who Is Jacopo Belbo?
    Posted November 1, 2012 at 5:25 pm | Permalink

my point wasn’t about being a newbie spoonfed by the mainstream fan … that is just life in 2012 … it takes almost no effort or taste to stumble on having good taste anymore.

you like GoT because of the show that is fine, a bit late to the party but better late than never. but being a fan of something has nothing to do with splashing around with water-wings in the shallow end of cultural memes for your Halloween costume choice.

my point was about Halloween costumes. Halloween costumes are a chance to flex your creative, clever, obscure reference muscles. they should serve as a way to separate the wheat from the chaffe of who does and does not get your costume. you should be able to walk into any party or bar dressed in a black 3-pieces suit with a red tie and a bowler hat with an apple hanging from the front brim on invisible fishing line and be able to tell who sucks and is boring and painfully banal by who does and does not get that you are dressed as a Rene Magritte painting.

maybe that is just me ….

Haha, nice example. But it wouldn’t work here, in Belgium, since nearly everybody would get that reference. ;-)

Eh, I don’t really agree with this philosophy of Hallowe’en costuming. If your costume is so obscure that no one has any idea what you are supposed to be, to me that kind of defeats the purpose. The purpose being everyone having fun pretending to be someone else, and meanwhile enjoying each others’ costumes. Goal A is met by whatever costume, obscure or not, but It’s kind of hard to enjoy someone else’s costume when you’re spending all your time thinking WTF is s/he supposed to be, and then when told it’s some indy film you never saw or some comic book you’ve never read, the only response is a disappointed “oh, ok…”

I actually think that the fact that GoT is sort of recognizably mainstream makes it a much more viable choice for Hallowe’en than previous years. If you want to cosplay something obscure, do it for yourself, not for displaying to others.

Dude that’s not a hipster or nerdish attitude your embracing, that’s simply being an ass. Why would you want to treat people that way? What did they do to you?

As for the whole Nerds are in thing, I think it happened when portable electronics and media increased in the early 2000s. Xbox came along and suddenly everyone became a gamer etc etc. Not to mention the success of Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, comic book films suddenly geeky stuff became mainstream.

We won. Now all we have to do is stop the bullying in school. It does piss me off that i see young people following pursuits and talking pursuits nowadays that would have resulted in the living shit being beaten out of me.

i am not dedicating my life consumed in some grand “The Plan” so i think Umberto would be fine … i am simply saying a properly clever and moderately obscure costume is a great weeding out device against the frightfully banal … and there is nothing wrong with holding people to a higher standard for halloween costumes than “whatever the flavour of the month/year is”.

and Eco would probably be more concerned with the degradation of cultural integrity thru the multiple transcription of memes when literature (ASoIaF) is then made into a deteriorated mimeographed visual representation (GoT) and futher diffusion into superficial cultural meme as represented by thousands of Khalessi running around this Halloween. as he opined in his essay Travels In Hyyperreality there is nothing America likes more than taking something of quality or significance and distorting it thru the lens of crass commercialized hyperreality.

    Out of topic rant:
It is funny modern fantasy is freakin’ full of Elric proxies ( ASoIaF is no exception: the whole valyrian thing is Melniboné+Rome, and the Targs in general are pretty much a clone army of Elrics, incest included): the guy is an icon inside this little fandom, and yet, after all these years we have no Elric movie… I want a decent Elric adaptation to see the light, but I’m kind of sure it is going to be butchered if it doesn’t end up in good hands… maybe Guillermo del Toro some day will make it?

the elven prince in GdT’s 2nd Hellboy movie was about as close to what i imagine Elric to be as I’ve seen in film.

i am not sure why there has never been an Elric movie … he is a pretty dark character, there are anti-heroes but Elric is a whole other level of anti hero … and some of the storylines are kind of dark …. plus there are tons of storylines to choose from.

but maybe one day … there aren’t many people i’d trust … and i’d rather see nothing than something crappy.

There were a good many Khaleesis at the San Diego Comic Con this year too, but very few other costumes from GoT.

I remember when one influx of fans after another came into science fiction fandom, starting with Tolkien and Star Trek fans, then Logan’s Run, then Star Wars in a huge way, and many more fannish flavors of the week since then. Old line fans would complain that the newcomers were shallow and not really fans. Star Trek fans made that complaint about the Star Wars fans, Star Wars fans complained about Battlestar Galactica fans (of the original Glenn Larson TV show, not the more modern version).

Masquerade competitions at conventions always inspired not only costumes but ensembles of them from whatever was new in theatres or on TV during the previous year. Costuming is a visual medium, and while you can be inspired to create one based solely on the description from a novel, the audience at even the most sophisticated convention will give greater applause to something they recognize. By the early 70s, it became common to give separate awards to original designs and to recreations, with roughly equal prestige accorded to both.

Now, on-stage entries in a masquerade aren’t quite the same as the sort of costume you might wear to a party, or even as a hall costume for wandering about a convention. The masquerade costume is made more for appreciation by a crowd, while a party costume is something you might wear only to please yourself or maybe the other partygoers.

Yes, fandom has changed over the years and it’s largely mainstreamed now, but it’s still a vibrant community and one of the best things about it, I’ve always felt, is the sense of community with like-minded people that it engenders. This is even true at the vastest of American sf conventions such as the Comic-Con, though it can be challenging to find someone you actually know there, amid the huge crowds.

Anyway, the desire to be part of that community ought to be the only requirement for becoming a part of it. If anyone prefers an elite, exclusive society within that greater umbrella, they are welcome to it. But, for my money, come one, come all.
