HBO airs first promo for Game of Thrones season three

Tonight HBO aired the first promo for season three of Game of Thrones, in the form of a short “graphic tease” clip. Take a look.

Winter Is Coming: As I expected, no footage. Still pretty cool though! The emphasis on the war between ice and fire makes sense, given the final scene of season two.

But really, this was more about getting the casual fans to put season three on their radar. Thankfully, we shouldn’t have to wait too long until we get something more substantial. The Boardwalk Empire season finale airs in two weeks, and I bet HBO would want to put something in front of that, be it a trailer or an “In Production” feature.

  • The Great War is between Death & Life: Ice & Fire. If we lose, the night will never end

I assume this is from Miss Stannis – Selyse

  • I thought the voice was Brienne at first, but Quaithe makes the most sense. Very, very cool! I wish it were more, but you can’t have everything.

  • i thought it was quaithe at first, and then even Val but nop- i am pretty certain it’s Selyse! :D AAwwwwww fantastic!!! this season is going to be amazing!! XD

  • A woman thinks it might be Quaithe (she has a deeper voice without the accent Mel has), since she appears to have the gift of prophecy and has given advice to Dany before. A statement like that would certainly be a motivator to get an army together that can handle such a monumental task, no? But it could also be Selyse, whose voice we don’t know yet, as Caro H said above. That would also make sense since she has to advise Stannis. It doesn’t sound like Osha to this woman.

  • But yes, I think it’s Selyse. It definitely feels like a servant of the Lord of Light and it makes sense for it to be a new character. What’s the fun in showing us voices we’ve already heard?

  • It sounds like Quaithe, but it would make more sense coming from Melisandre or Selyse. I’m guessing it is Selyse Baratheon. At this point in the story Dany has no idea about the threat looming North of the Wall. I’d like to keep it that way.

  • It sounds like a speech Melisandre would give, but that’s definitely not her voice so my guess is Stannis’s wife,Selyse

  • ooooh it is her! I was thinking it was Quaithe, but yeah it sounds like Tara Fitzgerald. I hadn’t thought of her. Cool!

  • “The Great War is between death and life, ice and fire. If we lose the night will never end.”

Certianly something Melisander would say…. Context wise it fits her too. Maybe it’s Tara Fitzgerald as Selyse Baratheon?

  • As usual we all have the same question. Who the hell was that anyway? It should be the Red Priestess but it sure doesn’t sound like her.

  • Isn’t that the first time they added the twitter address to the graphic? Looks a little out of place, no? But then again, Ravens might tweet too…

  • Ugh I know it’s only a tease but I can’t but help feel this took a couple of hours to make in a cgi studio.

  • I thought the voice sounded like Michelle Fairley, but looks like I’m the only one here who jumped to that conclusion..

  • Sounds like something like Selyse would say to encourage his husband to burn a child to awaken some rocks.

  • Well, that’s cool I guess… but the “GoT” logo looked kinda lame. The graphic teaser last year (with Stannis’s voice and a ring of fire) was way cooler.

  • That’s Kit, Selyse – it is the calm before the storm, only the night’s watch and winterfell can keep what comes from the north at bay.

  • The 3 swords concept is great but the GoT acronym logo is terrible. And the shiny metal texture might have been cool in 2004 but today it just looks cheesy. I felt the same way about the teaser poster. It’s tough to judge the overall theme of the 3rd seasons graphics based on only two pieces but there are a few similarities between them. So far Im not impressed. I wonder if they are designed by the same people as the past two seasons because the quality is not as good.

  • Sounds like Diana Rigg as Olenna Tyrell, The Queen of Thorns. That’s my stab at it. Stick it with the pointy end! But it could be Quaithe or possibly Brienne though she sounds a little soft for Brienne.

  • Selmy,

I agree, I just see neither Stannis, Mel or Davos needing to hear this from Seylse. Furthermore Dany doesn’t either or Jorah by way of Quaithe. The voice sounds very much like a smoother more controlled Ellie Kendrick, who I can visualize speaking this to Bran, therefore Meera gets my vote.

  • The sound belongs to a woman much older than Meera’s 22 year old actress. It’s either Selyse or Quaithe. Probably Selyse, since she’s always repeating what Melisandre is saying, and this would fit well into Mel’s mouth.

  • Its Selyse. It sound like Tara Fitz and it would be something her character would say and would be good to show how deep into the religion she really is…. So deep she might burn a child…. Maybe her own…..

  • i dont know whats wrong with all you people, it’s definitely hodor speaking.
“hodor hodor hodor…hodor & hodor. hodor hodor hodor hodor.

    Hodor out

  • Could the three swords be the three remaining kings? Balon dying before the season begins.

The two at the top is Robb and Stannis against Joff.

Or maybe armies united at the wall against the king beyond the wall?

  • I never expected to see the term “GoT” outside of the internetz. What’s wrong with spelling out the name of your show?

Also I’m a bit confused as to why they’re hitting the fantasy element so hard in this teaser. It made sense last season because the whole “the night is dark and full of terrors” thing is very relevant to Stannis’ character. But this one is not new information, assuming it’s from someone on team Baratheon and not Meera or Quaithe.

  • Tara , no question.
Exciting tho’ aye guys? I love how they’ve gone with the geek GoT … shout out to the fans I say ! :)

  • It’s obviously Selyse… Based on the voice and the words spoken, I’m not sure how anyone could think otherwise…

  • When I first heard it, and due to the fact that it was a new voice, I thought about Val, but now I’m pretty sure it is Selyse. It may be Quaithe too, but I give Stannis’ wife a bigger chance.

  • In all honesty, there is no reason why they havent shown us footage yet, other HBO shows get sneak peaks months in advance, i saw a true blood sneak peak 8 with FOOTAGE 8 months before said release, theres no excuse for game of thrones which starts production much sooner than true blood/boardwalk empire.

But like winter said, there should be some real footage coming along with the BE finale. heres hoping

  • Also, spartacus got its first trailer for its new season in late july/ early august, the show doesnt even start until January, not cool HBO

  • Read on the Forum of Ice and Fire :

Maybe Charlotte Hope, cast as Myranda, will play a character merging Mya Stone and Myranda Royce… which might be interesting.

  • Kingslayer,

Because HBO hates its audience and want you to hate the show more so instead of rushing out quick footage they are unlike Spartacus which films the entire series on a soundstage with a green screen they film in various different countries instead and put a lot of money into the production.

    Shame on them.

  • Joshua Taylor,

    lol

Honestly, I’m glad HBO is being tight-lipped at this point. The gigantic casting reveal some months ago was more than I was expecting. It might have been better to roll out over the months in between the Con and year end. The trailers for season 2 spoiled some great moments for me, such as Varys’ speech to Tyrion about a small man casting a large shadow. It would have been cooler had I not seen it a million times in trailers.

  • Emily:
Definitely not Melisandre, the accent’s all wrong. I’m thinking Selyse.

Selyse is exactly who I thought, as well. She’s quite devoted to the Lord of Light so it would make sense for her to be spouting off this kind of stuff, similar to anything Melisandre would say.

  • Kingslayer:

    U MAD BRO?

    …about a tv show teaser…

  • Hi-Fi:
Listening to it again, it does sound a bit like Quaithe. Is Laura back this season?

It sounds nothing like Quaithe. Watch the show again if you think it does.

  • caoimay:
Am I they only one who thought that sucked? Last year’s was so much better.

It got me excited for the upcoming season, but compared to “the night is dark and full of terrors” yes, it sucked.

  • I’m surprised not to hear more about how this trailer is more focused on the mythology of the story and the larger story rather than the war for the iron throne. I suppose last year’s was as well, but given how much consternation there has been over the lack of prophecy, etc, in the show, referencing ice and fire and the such may signal the introduction of more if that.

  • caoimay,

Stannis whispering “The night is dark and full of terrors” was cooler and the graphics were better as well. I’m hoping we get a trailer similar to last year’s ‘Cold Winds are Rising’ in a couple of weeks. The teaser from last night should have been before the premier of ‘Boardwalk Empire’ S3. I hope releasing this so late doesn’t mean we won’t get a trailer before the finale of BE.

  • My first thought upon seeing it was that it was Quaithe, but would she say “if we lose…”? Seems slightly out of character her being so direct but maybe I’m wrong.

  • Tyrion Pimpslap,

I just commented on the DVD set post that HBO has a “Season 3 In Production” video scheduled to hit OnDeamand December 3, so I assume it will air prior to the Boardwalk Empire finale Decembe 2.

  • Direhound:
My first thought upon seeing it was that it was Quaithe, but would she say “if we lose…”? Seems slightly out of character her being so direct but maybe I’m wrong.

It’s not Quaithe. The voice matches the actress that’s playing Selyse.

  • …and yes, I know it doesn’t make sense for the Queen of Thorns to say those lines, but the way the t.v. series has been diverging from the books, it wouldn’t surprise me one bit.

  • Just as a note, Stephen Dillane was indeed the whole “the night is dark and full of terrors” for last season’s date teaser (as well as “the cold winds are rising” for the second trailer), but I don’t think EITHER of those trailers used actual lines of dialogue–certainly Stannis never whisper-gasped “the night is dark and full of terrors,” and while he often said things similar to the text in “the cold winds are rising,” he never used that exact phrasing (to my knowledge, anyway). They got Stephen to say Stannis-esque things specifically for a voiceover that weren’t real lines of dialogue in the show, unsurprisingly, since I would bet that’s easier and better audio quality-wise (as well as more dramatic).

So in theory this could be Quaithe, Selyse, even Meera or something. I’m sticking with my prediction that it’s Tara Fitzgerald doing some Selyse, but I doubt this is an actual line of dialogue from the show, so whether or not Selyse would *need* to say this to Stannis or not (she does, of a sort, in the books, FWIW), she atmospherically is doing it here for the trailer.

Also, interesting that so far a lot of early trailers have been voiced by Team Dragonstone characters–wonder if that has to do with the fact that they seem to finish filming first? Guess we’ll have to see what a second, fuller trailer would look like before speculating on that.

  • Luana,

As a lifelong Rigg fan since I saw the Avengers at the age of 9 that is in no way Diana Rigg. I would bet a million dragons on that.

  • That really doesn not sound like Melisandre, Carice Van Houten has a distinct voice and that aint’it, plus it is not Meera either, the actress playing her has a much “younger” sounding voice. I’ll have to agree with the others it probably is Lady Selyse (Tara Fitzgerald), that would be something comming from her, since she is for all intents and purposes a fanatical convert to the Lord Of Light, and the few times that she does talk in the books she does sound like she’s quoting scripture/prophecy most of the time.

  • The Onion Knight:
The woman who is speaking actually appears to be Val, Princess of the Wildlings

I assume you are basing that on the words of the quote? Do we even know who Val is? Aren’t we only guessing it’s that one actress that I doubt anyone has heard?

  • Joshua Taylor:

I’ll raise you two zillion dragons ser Joshua, and throw in a Hostess Twinkee !

You probably don’t know, but Laura Pradelska is working with her voice in German-speaking and English-speaking countries in TV advertisements (I think that it is called) and is an actress. He is here garman speaking voice http://www.castingcallpro.com/uk/file.php?uid=58464 and english with an US accent: http://www.castingcallpro.com/uk/file.php?uid=58460. You heard here and knew that it was here seeing American Airlines advertisements? Probably not.

I agree , much is left unsaid , however the three swords do imply an ongoing
quest or battle. My review was only at this site, deciding to skip the hyped
trailer. I had no expectation of it, but eagerly await later previews which
may emotionally stir fans and point to foreshadowed events. The next trailer
will allow for more discussion, and hopefully give us a glimpse of the prophetic
demonstrations ( which season 3 will evidently have ).

  • Hear Me Roar,

Could you or your fellow companions that run this page ask someone from the creators, HBO or someone very competetive who was speaking in this trailer? Many fan tried to answers it, but who was right? It is Selyse Baratheon or Quaithe?

  • Joshua Taylor:
    Luana,

Eh, you’re probably right, and it’s just wishful thinking on my part. It seems crazy that they’d have an actress the stature of Riggs and not use her, but then again, they didn’t use Sean Bean for promo voiceovers either.

  • Well this is interesting…. I’ve been told that the voice in this teaser is neither Selyse nor Quaithe. Val? Quick, someone find out what Stephanie Blacker sounds like!

  • I am pretty certain that voice is not a wildling. So if it is Ms. Blacker, we’ve undoubtedly pegged her as the wrong character.

  • Geez, guys, this is so obviously a spoiler about a part supposedly left for Season 4 — surely those lines could only be spoken by the Red Viper of Dorne!

  • Winter Is Coming:
Well this is interesting…. I’ve been told that the voice in this teaser is neither Selyse nor Quaithe. Val? Quick, someone find out what Stephanie Blacker sounds like!

Well if that’s not Tara, I’m gonna need a hearing aid.

  • Macha: Well if that’s not Tara, I’m gonna need a hearing aid.

    Yeah, me as well.
    another guess: Osha?
on the other hand it does not sound like Natalia Tena s voice. But it certainly more closer than Carice and Ellie Kendrick.

  • The Rabbit: Yeah, me as well.
    another guess: Osha?
on the other hand it does not sound like Natalia Tena s voice. But it certainly more closer than Carice and Ellie Kendrick.

Unless Osha is in reality a noblewoman posing as a wildling, and we just find out earlier, no, that’s not her. There is a definite noble cast to the voice in the video; which severely limits our options. This really sounds like Tara Fitzgerald to me.

  • Cary Storm: Unless Osha is in reality a noblewoman posing as a wildling, and we just find out earlier, no, that’s not her. There is a definite noble cast to the voice in the video; which severely limits our options. This really sounds like Tara Fitzgerald to me.

Hmm..you could have a point. And that means Val is also out of the question if we apply the same noble woman pattern here.

  • You know, listening to it again, it kind of sounds like Melisandre. Or am I just imagining a slight accent?

  • Winter Is Coming:
Well this is interesting…. I’ve been told that the voice in this teaser is neither Selyse nor Quaithe. Val? Quick, someone find out what Stephanie Blacker sounds like!

Are you completely sure? You’re driving me insane here …. all I hear is Tara… she has a very distinctive voice … please tell me you’re joking with us ?

  • All right new theory.

It IS Quaithe, but they renamed her on the show. Does anybody remember her stating her name in the show?

  • I’m sure the quote will be spoken by Melisandre at some point during the season. So whoever it is in the teaser probably doesn’t matter anyway.

  • That’s another option, yes. A line belonging to a specific character, but read by (a random?) someone else for the purpose of this promo.

  • Sounds like Natalie Dormer (Margaery Tyrell) ?
The three swords on the “O” could possibly represent the 3rd season and the book “A Storm of Swords”.
