Red Carpet News has recorded an interview with Iwan Rheon. He remains tight-lipped about his role, so we do not really learn anything new, but this is the first time the actor answered questions about Game of Thrones. In fact, he volunteers the topic all by himself, at about the 2:50 mark.
Hear Me Roar: For me, this was the first I saw of Rheon outside a role (and then I only saw a few clips from Misfits). I know, I know, I should be more aware of the guy and his popularity. Very curious about his interpretation of the role he was given on Thrones! (You can ask/comment about the role in the comments, but be aware that brings us to spoiler territory.)

Haha everyone knows he’s Ramsay why can’t he just come out and say it. Makes me think he’s gonna start out as reek and try to help theon escape then show who he really is. Sick sadistic twisted dude

Funny how all the secrecy makes it SO OBVIOUS who he’s playing :P.

Because everyone doesn’t. The majority of watchers are not book-readers, and even amongst those who have read, very few are on sites like these and paying attention to casting, etc.
Did you spoiler quote your comment? I can’t tell anymore with the new set-up, but please do if you didn’t. It’s just kind of a jerk move to ruin things for other people.

I have a theory on how the storyline with Iwan’s character may play out…
I agree with the speculation that Iwan will end up being Reek for part of the season; his hesitancy to speak of his character indicates that the character will have a secret identity. If Ramsay does indeed present himself to the captive Theon as Reek, a fellow prisoner, it might be a ploy to try and worm information out of him regarding what REALLY happened at Winterfell. If, as Reek, Ramsay learns that Bran and Rickon are actually still alive, then he will send out men from the Dreadfort to hunt down the Stark boys. Bran and Rickon will stay together for the majority of their journey to the Wall, but the catalyst for their separation will be that Ramsay’s forces are after them; thus, splitting up is the only way to ensure that they will be safe.
Psychotic as he is, I think Ramsay would have a reason for disguising himself as Reek and earning Theon’s trust, as opposed to his simply doing so on a sadistic whim. Remember, in the books, Ramsay is basically the only person besides Theon who knows Bran and Rickon were not murdered, as he assisted in the murder of the miller’s boys.
Again, just a theory. What do other people think?

MPN1010,
I have no idea how it’ll play out, but I’d forgotten that Ramsay knows Bran and Rickon are alive. That might well be important in the future, and if he did find out he might try to find them. I don’t think he’s not stupid enough to think that he could find them in the wilderness weeks later though. He’s brutal and cruel and psychopathic, not stupid. You mentioned yourself that he was the one to suggest calling off Theon’s search for them to kill the miller’s boys in stead. Though at the time he might have done that just as much to gain a hold on Theon as to give himself a chance at ruling Winterfell in the future.

Rheon… rhymes with Theon?

I’m almost certain that they will do a Reek/Ramsay thing of some kind. Not sure what, and would love to see the escape sequence. You can’t have two seasons of Theon torture, though, unless you are only checking in once or twice. And I don’t think they want to simply check the box on Theon.

He just dosen’t look enough intimidating to me… too young. I hope he wont fail!
Tomer SegalQuote Reply
MPN1010,
This is exactly along the lines I was thinking. And considering the Ramsay patrol out after Bran and Rickon based on “Reek’s information” don’t necessarily have to be hunting them down, it could appear as if they were a rescue party, with Roose Bolton pledging to Robb back in Riverrun that they are trying to find the boys. It would work well if it wasn’t until Episode 9 (the RW episode) that Theon and the audience learns the truth, that Reek is Ramsay and Ramsay is Roose’s son and Roose is not to be trusted….cut to the Rains of Castamere and “Jaime Lannister sends you his regards”.

Alan,
I agree they will probably show an escape attempt, but I wouldn’t expect much to happen with Theon this season. He had no material in ASOS, and I don’t think their going to start pushing to much of ADWD this early.
Then in Season 4, they can just ignor him for the first half of the season and then start up the AFFC/ADWD plotlines in episode 6.

I don’t think he’s supposed to look intimidating. Au contraire, I’d say he should look pretty inconspicuous. It’s his sadistic ways that make him the monster that he is, not his posture etc. He seems quite perfect (considering I haven’t seen any of his acting so far) and even tho I haven’t imagined his character to be this handsome, I’m sure he’ll do very well.

This thread seems to fairly spoiler filled, so one thought that one could appropriately ask here. Is it possible to have a separate thread where bookreaders could just natter on endlessly without having to worry about adding spoiler covers with uncooperative electronics or search for suitably circumspect phrasing so as not to spoil nonreaders, a place labeled “Here there be dragons enter at your own risk.” It might make life easier for everyone, except maybe the moderator. Sorry, Winter.

If you watch Misfits, you will see that he is perfect for this role…

It’s always great to hear the actors speak in their own voices, without affectation of their characters. A woman feels that this often shows you how talented they really are when they inhabit their character and take on an especially odious personality. Brings to mind Jack Gleeson, all fellow actors have said he’s a great chap in RL and yet he’s so good at playing that prick Joffrey. Can’t wait for S3 to begin!
Mrs. H’gharQuote Reply
Whoa, I wasn’t expecting such an attractive dude. I mean, I saw his headshot and everything, but he seems totally lovely. They really did well with a guy who’s gonna reel us in and make us think he’s Theon’s redeemer. Maybe, in a sick way, he is?
Lin BeifunkQuote Reply
Yeah, I’m not sure of the timing. But the escape attempt did happen in A Storm of Swords, more or less. Theon mentions it in Dance — but it occurred months before, I believe, which likely places it in Storm.
AlanQuote Reply
I’ve never been so excited for a character due to the actor! I absolutely love Iwan Rheon and think that he will play the perfect Ramsay/Reek. (Follow in Mrs. H’ghar’s path? Name change to Mrs. Snow…never Snow! Haha)
Maester VictorQuote Reply
He has such a boyish look, and such a deep, gravelly voice. It is an interesting contrast.!

A very good theory. The story’s slight revision works here, and sets up the
later plot with Ramsay/Reek. The details of what happened at
Winterfell may be clarified too. I love the intrigue, but the season is still
cluttered with ambitious plots. What am I saying ? This was GRRM’s intent!

I’m loving the ” Show Spoiler ” link, reveals and it really simplifies reading.
When I write a spoiler and use the tab, the result is hidden, but
from those who don’t wish to see. If I wish to get an idea of
spoilery comments to hide, the ” Hide Spoiler’ link gives me the heads up.
To the point, any unsubstantiated plot development for season 3 is
considered spoilery.

Brightroar,
Yeah i think (or at least hope) they begin the season with Theon trying to escape from the Dreadfort, or Reek pretends to be a prisoner with him

MPN1010,
I definitely think you’re right. I think your idea is brilliant. It works out so perfectly then, because Bran and Rickon need to stay together pretty much until the finale, to get as much as possible time with Meera & Jojen… That’s pretty cool and your idea gives a good enough reason for them to split up… You’re hired!
King DBCQuote Reply
Al Swearengen,
He definitely is a cool guy! But that’s my blatantly biased opinion!
King DBC, I love this idea! The show needs to keep Rickon and Bran together long enough to spend time with Osha, Jojen, and Meera and learn about …green dreams, magic, Wilding culture, Children of the Forest, Howland Reed, Lyanna Stark, Rhaegar Targaryen, and who knows what else will be described, hinted at, or explained in the show from their perspectives?
Maester VictorQuote Reply
This guy is Ramsay about as much as the guy who plays Locke is Vargo Hoat. I would be highly disappointed if they tried to insert any of the Reek stuff into this character. The time for that already passed.

I love Misfits. If you haven’t seen it you are missing out. Iwan is awesome in it, a stand out. I am very excited to see him in GoT. If he is Ramsay I think he will do an excellent job. Oh and I have no doubts about Noah Taylor either. He will be perfect. He even has a slight lisp so maybe it is not out altogether. Thaphierth!
