Game of Thrones RPG offers new DLC, “Beyond the Wall”

Cyanide has just released some new downloadable content for their Game of Thrones action role-playing game. The DLC is entitled “Beyond the Wall” and promises an additional 2 hours of gameplay for players.

With the downloadable content “Beyond the Wall” for Game of Thrones”, we plunge into the dark past of Mors Westford, during his early years in the Night’s Watch, long before the events of the main story. Offering up to 2 hours of additional gameplay, this new quest brings us at the heart of the Wildlings’ territory, the merciless outcast warriors, sworn enemies of the Night’s Watch. What started like a simple patrol on top of the Wall will quickly become a real frozen hell for Mors and his companions.

The DLC will set you back 5 bucks (or 5 euros if you’re across the pond) and can be purchased for the PC or XBOX versions (the Playstation version is coming soon).

Winter Is Coming: I started playing the original game but never finished. I was having fun with it, but life got in the way and I had to stop and then never got back into it. I may have to do so soon, not only because of this DLC, but also because the ending has apparently quite a twist. Has anyone played through the original game? What did you think?

I don’t game much anymore… but is it me or is $5 for 2 hours of gameplay not absurdly overpriced?

I need to get back into this. I had to format my disk and lost my progress in the game.

It’s not an amazing game but it’s fun.

Just installed the game, gonna give it a go this weekend. Might add the DLC as well, sounds cool! (…that was a lame pun)
But yeah, maybe I’ll find Benjen.

The game sucks; the only thing that was great in it was the writing. But, as a fan of lore and storytelling, this was enough for me to play and have fun with it. Loved all the endings, especially Valarr’s one (don’t worry, I won’t spoil it).

Since I’ve already spent $50 in it, might as well get this DLC and gain more backstory.

The game is awesome. Not the best among other videogames, but really really good and the ending was “WTF?!”, an ending really better than Mass Effect 3 :D
You should finish it! Anyway I couldn’t imagine they would going to release a DLC, I thought the game didn’t sell well.

Most single-player campaigns in games these days last anywhere between 8-10 hours. You pay $65 for those, granted most of them also have multiplayer or other kinds of features to provide additional gameplay.

Is this content necessarily worth $5? Maybe. Is it absurdly overpriced? I wouldn’t say so. The Elder Scrolls DLC are often $7.50-$10 for the same amount of added content (not talking about expansion packs, mind you…these are just a few additional quests).

    sean,

Well, if it wasn’t for Steam, i’d disagree. Seeing as i’ve gotten so many full games on steam for $5 though, it does seem a bit much. It’s still better than the $15 map packs from CoD.

I’m interested in playing this game for the story, but unfortunately I’ve heard some bad things about it (even a little about the story) so I’m struggling with the decision.

You could easily compare it to a movie, since those in general get you roughly 2h of entertainment.

Most two hours movies are priced @ $12-15 out and $6 in. So it seems in line for two hours of entertainment to me.

Yes, there are times a $65 game gives 60 hours plus of good gameplay (Skyrim, for example), but that’s the exception, really.

I really, really recommend this game. The story is FANTASTIC. There’s a moment in the game as shocking as the RW and the ending is amazing. The gameplay is a bit weak, but the story is probably the best I’ve seen so far this year.

The game was pretty decent, there is actually a cameo by GRRM and Ty in it too which I thought was pretty clever. The gameplay is ok, but the story is really great, very Martinish. Overall it’s worth playing to the end just for the story alone.

I’m not comparing it to movies because that’s not fair when you should be comparing it to other games. I just recall games like Skyrim being of vastly higher quality having hundreds of hours if not unlimited hours of gameplay for $60. Hard to justify $5 for 2 hours in that context.

I bought both games (the rpg and genesis) just a few weeks ago on a steam weekenddeal for €15 :p

I haven’t finished any of the games as of yet, but I particulary like the rpg! Mostly because of the storyline of which the building-up is similar to the books (in chapters according to characters). It’s nice to play 2 different characters with different stories :)

The game (pc) sucked. They should sell it 15$ instead of 50. Graphics from 2005, the fights are lame, bugs everywhere, the same zones are re-used 5 times throughout the entire game, some voice-overs are disgusting (Alester and Cersei)… I was quite mad when I realized high level items (best quality) you can find towards the end of the game are visually identical to the starter items.
Story is not that great either. Ok, there are a few good surprises (Conleth Hill and James Cosmo voice-over, songs from the show, the 2 characters meeting…), but man, that story makes no sense. Where are Robert, Ned, LF, Jaime.. etc when you’re in KL ? Valarr is the type of villain GRRM never used in the story so far, and I can see why. Some twists are literally copy/paste from the books (shadow assassin, resurection “kiss” of the red priest, hidden Targaryen child). KL looks like a random medieval city, not like KL from the books or show. I finished the game because a lot of people were saying the ending worth it. Chose the “good” Alester ending (give the baby to varys and get killed by Cersei’s guards in the throne room). It was lame.
Now they’re making a DLC ? Come on, GRRM, please sell the rights to a good video game company, like Bioware. They will know how to make a good RPG. Because Cyanide sure as hell doesn’t.

Comparing to Skyrim is kind of unfair, no? I mean, yes, if you are only buying one game, buy Skyrim. 100+ hours, $65.

But this is standard game pricing. I wouldn’t buy it, personally, but it’s not overpriced versus the market for other games or versus other entertainment options.

I never was a fan of movie/show based games. Even if it’s somewhat based on the books, they tend to add their own stories into it which doesn’t match up with what we would expect. To me, making a Game of Thrones game is more of an insult than a good thing. They shouldn’t have risked making a game out of a legendary franchise…

Obviously it wasn’t an insult to George himself as he gave them the rights to do it, plus let them run their story by him so it would be up to par. I always find it odd when fans take more personal offense than the creator to things like this.

Why wouldn’t that be fair? Entertainment is entertainment and for most people entertainment is under one single budget.

It seems especially strange to talk about not being fair when you cherry-pick a game with a very unusually high game time during an age where the average game probably clocks in under 10 hours for one play through.

The story for the games is excellent, but the gameplay was so bad it tried my patience. It’s just like an offline MMO – and not even a good MMO, an MMO from ten years ago when the standards were lower. This game probably should have been more of a swordplay simulator like Mount & Blade and War of the Roses.

I am a huge fan of RPG’s and Game of Thrones, so playing this was a no brainer. It did take me several hours to finally master the unique control scheme. When you get a few levels, the gameplay mechanics really start to work, but for the first few levels you always kind of feel like you are struggling and behind the curve. Also the first few levels are very long in the way of dialogue after dialogue but all that backstory really sets up the games interesting story line. I think the game is obviously not in the realm of a skyrim (huge budge difference!) but is worth for any RPG fan, even more so if you like GoT!

BioWare had their chance to buy the rights and did not take it. Neither did Bethesda, Relic and Paradox.

Arguably GRRM should have sat on the rights for a while longer until the TV series came out, which might have raised more interest from the bigger companies. But at the time Cyanide were the only company with a serious offer and serious money on the table.

I played this game and beat it – gameplay was like Dragon Age Origins (only not as good) and since that game was made like what 2009? GoT got bad gameplay reviews for it.

GFX also look very outdated…but get past all that and the story is fantastic. The voice acting is decent enough – but the story keeps the game going…and the end. Wow.

I won’t pick up the DLC – but I hope they make another one…maybe with gfx that don’t look like PS2.

This game is absolutely horrible. I wasted $60 on this piece of crap and I really regret it. I love A Song of Ice and Fire and thought it would be awesome just to run around Westeros and all that good stuff. Unfortunately it wasn’t worth it. I would go with Skyrim if you want a great RPG to play.
