Tonight HBO aired the first promo for season three of Game of Thrones, in the form of a short “graphic tease” clip. Take a look.
Winter Is Coming: As I expected, no footage. Still pretty cool though! The emphasis on the war between ice and fire makes sense, given the final scene of season two.
But really, this was more about getting the casual fans to put season three on their radar. Thankfully, we shouldn’t have to wait too long until we get something more substantial. The Boardwalk Empire season finale airs in two weeks, and I bet HBO would want to put something in front of that, be it a trailer or an “In Production” feature.

pretty certain it’s Osha’s voice.
EinaraiQuote Reply
A woman thinks it might be Quaithe (she has a deeper voice without the accent Mel has), since she appears to have the gift of prophecy and has given advice to Dany before. A statement like that would certainly be a motivator to get an army together that can handle such a monumental task, no? But it could also be Selyse, whose voice we don’t know yet, as Caro H said above. That would also make sense since she has to advise Stannis. It doesn’t sound like Osha to this woman.
Mrs. H’gharQuote Reply
Definitely not Melisandre, the accent’s all wrong. I’m thinking Selyse.

But yes, I think it’s Selyse. It definitely feels like a servant of the Lord of Light and it makes sense for it to be a new character. What’s the fun in showing us voices we’ve already heard?
ImpQuote Reply
It sounds like Quaithe, but it would make more sense coming from Melisandre or Selyse. I’m guessing it is Selyse Baratheon. At this point in the story Dany has no idea about the threat looming North of the Wall. I’d like to keep it that way.

I watched some videos and Selyse and Quaithe voices were so similar. But I found video with Tara Fitzgerald from last year and she had lower (more manly I think) voice than in the 1990s or 2000s, so I think it is Laura Pradelska. Look here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PPnk5_DlbXg&feature=related

Well, that’s cool I guess… but the “GoT” logo looked kinda lame. The graphic teaser last year (with Stannis’s voice and a ring of fire) was way cooler.

That’s Kit, Selyse – it is the calm before the storm, only the night’s watch and winterfell can keep what comes from the north at bay.
Hedge knightQuote Reply
The 3 swords concept is great but the GoT acronym logo is terrible. And the shiny metal texture might have been cool in 2004 but today it just looks cheesy. I felt the same way about the teaser poster. It’s tough to judge the overall theme of the 3rd seasons graphics based on only two pieces but there are a few similarities between them. So far Im not impressed. I wonder if they are designed by the same people as the past two seasons because the quality is not as good.

Selmy,
I agree, I just see neither Stannis, Mel or Davos needing to hear this from Seylse. Furthermore Dany doesn’t either or Jorah by way of Quaithe. The voice sounds very much like a smoother more controlled Ellie Kendrick, who I can visualize speaking this to Bran, therefore Meera gets my vote.
tysnowQuote Reply
The sound belongs to a woman much older than Meera’s 22 year old actress. It’s either Selyse or Quaithe. Probably Selyse, since she’s always repeating what Melisandre is saying, and this would fit well into Mel’s mouth.

Could the three swords be the three remaining kings? Balon dying before the season begins.
The two at the top is Robb and Stannis against Joff.
Or maybe armies united at the wall against the king beyond the wall?
DrFunguyQuote Reply
I never expected to see the term “GoT” outside of the internetz. What’s wrong with spelling out the name of your show?
Also I’m a bit confused as to why they’re hitting the fantasy element so hard in this teaser. It made sense last season because the whole “the night is dark and full of terrors” thing is very relevant to Stannis’ character. But this one is not new information, assuming it’s from someone on team Baratheon and not Meera or Quaithe.

In all honesty, there is no reason why they havent shown us footage yet, other HBO shows get sneak peaks months in advance, i saw a true blood sneak peak 8 with FOOTAGE 8 months before said release, theres no excuse for game of thrones which starts production much sooner than true blood/boardwalk empire.
But like winter said, there should be some real footage coming along with the BE finale. heres hoping

Kingslayer,
Because HBO hates its audience and want you to hate the show more so instead of rushing out quick footage they are unlike Spartacus which films the entire series on a soundstage with a green screen they film in various different countries instead and put a lot of money into the production.
Shame on them.

Honestly, I’m glad HBO is being tight-lipped at this point. The gigantic casting reveal some months ago was more than I was expecting. It might have been better to roll out over the months in between the Con and year end. The trailers for season 2 spoiled some great moments for me, such as Varys’ speech to Tyrion about a small man casting a large shadow. It would have been cooler had I not seen it a million times in trailers.

It got me excited for the upcoming season, but compared to “the night is dark and full of terrors” yes, it sucked.
TheWoodOfTheMorningQuote Reply
I’m surprised not to hear more about how this trailer is more focused on the mythology of the story and the larger story rather than the war for the iron throne. I suppose last year’s was as well, but given how much consternation there has been over the lack of prophecy, etc, in the show, referencing ice and fire and the such may signal the introduction of more if that.
AlanQuote Reply
caoimay,
Stannis whispering “The night is dark and full of terrors” was cooler and the graphics were better as well. I’m hoping we get a trailer similar to last year’s ‘Cold Winds are Rising’ in a couple of weeks. The teaser from last night should have been before the premier of ‘Boardwalk Empire’ S3. I hope releasing this so late doesn’t mean we won’t get a trailer before the finale of BE.
Tyrion PimpslapQuote Reply
My first thought upon seeing it was that it was Quaithe, but would she say “if we lose…”? Seems slightly out of character her being so direct but maybe I’m wrong.

It’s not Quaithe. The voice matches the actress that’s playing Selyse.
Cary StormQuote Reply
That’s Diana Rigg, not Quaithe or Selyse! Sheesh.
LuanaQuote Reply
…and yes, I know it doesn’t make sense for the Queen of Thorns to say those lines, but the way the t.v. series has been diverging from the books, it wouldn’t surprise me one bit.
LuanaQuote Reply
Just as a note, Stephen Dillane was indeed the whole “the night is dark and full of terrors” for last season’s date teaser (as well as “the cold winds are rising” for the second trailer), but I don’t think EITHER of those trailers used actual lines of dialogue–certainly Stannis never whisper-gasped “the night is dark and full of terrors,” and while he often said things similar to the text in “the cold winds are rising,” he never used that exact phrasing (to my knowledge, anyway). They got Stephen to say Stannis-esque things specifically for a voiceover that weren’t real lines of dialogue in the show, unsurprisingly, since I would bet that’s easier and better audio quality-wise (as well as more dramatic).
So in theory this could be Quaithe, Selyse, even Meera or something. I’m sticking with my prediction that it’s Tara Fitzgerald doing some Selyse, but I doubt this is an actual line of dialogue from the show, so whether or not Selyse would *need* to say this to Stannis or not (she does, of a sort, in the books, FWIW), she atmospherically is doing it here for the trailer.
Also, interesting that so far a lot of early trailers have been voiced by Team Dragonstone characters–wonder if that has to do with the fact that they seem to finish filming first? Guess we’ll have to see what a second, fuller trailer would look like before speculating on that.
KitQuote Reply
The woman who is speaking actually appears to be Val, Princess of the Wildlings
The Onion KnightQuote Reply
Luana,
As a lifelong Rigg fan since I saw the Avengers at the age of 9 that is in no way Diana Rigg. I would bet a million dragons on that.
Joshua TaylorQuote Reply
That really doesn not sound like Melisandre, Carice Van Houten has a distinct voice and that aint’it, plus it is not Meera either, the actress playing her has a much “younger” sounding voice. I’ll have to agree with the others it probably is Lady Selyse (Tara Fitzgerald), that would be something comming from her, since she is for all intents and purposes a fanatical convert to the Lord Of Light, and the few times that she does talk in the books she does sound like she’s quoting scripture/prophecy most of the time.
loco73Quote Reply
I assume you are basing that on the words of the quote? Do we even know who Val is? Aren’t we only guessing it’s that one actress that I doubt anyone has heard?

I agree , much is left unsaid , however the three swords do imply an ongoing

Unless Osha is in reality a noblewoman posing as a wildling, and we just find out earlier, no, that’s not her. There is a definite noble cast to the voice in the video; which severely limits our options. This really sounds like Tara Fitzgerald to me.
