Making the Histories of the S2 Blu-ray

HBO has released a video which gives us a glimpse of the making of the new animated histories that will be on the Blu-ray version of Game of Thrones: The Complete Second Season. It also includes a sneak peek at one of the histories included on the set, The History of the Wildlings, as narrated by Rose Leslie (Ygritte).

Winter Is Coming: Awesome stuff. These were easily the best part of the season one set. I can’t wait to see all the new ones.

Nice. So we’ll have like 19 new backstory videos? It’s great, but it’s a shame it’s only for the blu-ray version xP

The features in the season 1 Blu Ray that explained the doom of Valaryia and all the history of ASOIF was exceptional, I can’t wait to see the new stuff in the s2 Blu Ray.

I really wish they showed these histories before each episode of the show, right before the recap.

Will Simpson’s work is just amazing. I was very lucky to get to see some of his original artwork last year at the 2D comic convention. Can’t wait for the blu-ray, I loved the histories on the first season.

The Economist discusses the digital battle through the frame of GoT! I particularly like “The iron phone,” but there’s also “Stark realities” and “The Others”, which show that the writer is familiar with the books as well.

The only thing I dislike about this video is the portrayal of the Giants. The rest is epic, especially that final “You Will”.

It’s a lot bigger and less hairy/more human than I imagined/what I remember being described. Skyrim Giants are a lot better and closer to what Martin described in the books.

Art illustrators and wordsmiths are truly gifted folk, without them, our
imaginations and inquiry would rarely come to life and affect so many
simultaneously. To be read to, or recite oral histories as Rose does here,
caresses our ears and our hearts. I hope these are never replaced by the
diminishing efforts of Social Media. Thanks for sharing these WiC.

Most actors just try to narrate with a nice soothing VoiceOver, and correctly pronounce everything in a good rythm.

Rose did a hell of a job. She really got into the story and told it with passion like she’s actually been brought up with theses histories.

Exactly. This was Rose as Ygritte narrating, not just Rose narrating. If that makes sense.

That was awesome, Rose Leslie gave me goosebumps! I laughed at the idea of making more shows based on the animated histories – was that a nod to PJ and 3 Hobbit movies? In this case, I’d be all for it! And while I’m dreaming, can we get Simpson to take over the art chores on the A Game of Thrones comic book? And all subsequent adaptations too? Pretty please?

I agree, these Histories animations were the best extras on any movie/tv series I’ve seen. It’s always nice to have a making of, or behind the scenes, but to actually go deeper into the lore that most of us know or have imagined is just…..awesome!!!

You should be forced to buy blu-ray (what’s a player? $80?) because you will then be able to actually see the detail these artists spent all their time and effort to show you.

You don’t have to wait for me — you could just make a friend who has a player and HDTV. Introduce them to GoT if they’ve never experienced it. They’ll thank you if they’ve got good taste.
Heck, you can borrow blu-rays for free from the local public library.

like the other poster said, you going to buy it for me? i have a perfectly good DVD player, could put these extras on DVDs. I’m not shelling out money when I have something that works fine. If artists want to get their work shown and paid then their work should be more accessible. Not everyone has money to throw about you know.

I think the Blu-Ray discs for season 1 wound up being 10 dollars more than the DVD’s. That is not a bad deal. But I can understand if you don’t have a BR player and don’t want to spend 80+ bucks to get one, especially if you don’t have an HDTV.

…yes I agree, I don’t want to feed into that kind of consumerism ideology, where I must have the biggest or best or newest thing to come out. I’d rather not buy a new blu-ray when my old dvd player works just fine. I am an avid fan who can’t get enough of GOT/ASOIAF and would LOVE these histories, but THEY SHOULD ALSO OFFER THE REGULAR DVD OPTION!…imho of course :)

I understand people’s reluctance to get a blu-ray player. I was skeptical but I’m a sucker for visuals. Now I can’t watch a DVD without thinking, this would look waaaay better in blu-ray. Of course I thought the same thing with
    VHS and DVD.
That said, I like that the animations are blu-ray only. Those that spend an extra few bucks get a nice reward. They should release a subsequent DVD of the animations for like 10.00 or something 2-3 months down the road.

    Joshua Taylor,

Still haven’t made the switch to Blu-ray, but players are getting as cheap as $60. Still, I don’t think my TV is technically HD anyway, and I don’t like the thought of paying higher prices for Blu-rays, or feeling a need to re-buy any movies in Blu-ray (e.g. LOTR, Planet Earth). So I think I’ll keep waiting for now.

I would not say i am rich or well off, i earn the average wage in the UK and did not own a blu-ray player until i bought one for GOT season 1. It was money well spent for the better picture and extras. Nearly all blu-ray films have extras you dont get on the dvd version so you get more for your money on other titles aswell. Most of us have a certain amount of spare money after food and bills are payed for, the fact that people are posting on this site means we are all into our tv and films so that is where we are going to spend our spare cash.

    Joshua Taylor,

The last line of your statement is a perfect compromise….
I would wait the extra time to get the dvd version.
I would wait and buy it, instead of getting a bootlegged copy.
I would wait, even for just the promise of dvds to come….
I will wait until the sun rises in the west and sets in the east, until the seas go dry and the mountains blow in the wind like leaves, I will wait….

That’s entitled I Will Wait by Mashiara :)

    Lex,

Regarding the tv I just waited until a decent brand 32 inch HDTV widescreen was on sale and bought it. 200 Canadian and my PS3 which I bought cheap off a guy who it turned out just needed to buy drugs. I felt bad when I learned of this….until I watched Lawrence of Arabia in HD. Sucks to be a drug addict though.

So I did a little research on blu-rays (prices and features) just for information purposes only, as I too am still weighing my options, and I found that mostly all the blu-ray players on the market now, will play regular dvds as well. They will also play dvd-r, cd, cd-r, as well as other formats. Soo…there’s that to consider…and on ebay there are some decent deals…

Can’t believe I’m considering buying a blu-ray just for these histories….DAMN u HBO!…and DAMN u too G.O.T, for being too good….so good that I’m now addicted to you, and have to have every piece of you! :D

I watched the previous season’s on youtube last year, I’m guessing these will end up there as well. I don’t have a blu-ray player either, not enough of a movie or HD buff for it to be worth that much more than the DVD player we’ve already got.

Well done. I, too, could listen to Rose Leslie all day, as well(BTW, anyone know who wrote these histories).

I will probably break down and get a BluRay player, not just for this, but I think they’re cheap enough I can get one, buy the occasional box set and still enjoy my perfectly fine DVDs.
