On Facebook today, Game of Thrones unveiled the season three teaser poster, with a storm of- well, with a trio of swords.
Ours is the Fury: Very nice teaser! I love the reference to A Storm of Swords and the focus on threes. I’m wondering if the official season three poster will use a similar theme. I like the starkness of it (pardon the pun), a nice change from last year’s focus on redness and fire.

Finally a poster!!! Yeap, I agree, I like the contrast with last year’s posters. The three swords detail is pretty cool!

That seems rather a fitting poster for the book. A touch of class. And it definitely feels bleak.
Good work :)

Awessssssssssssome.
Hopefully will get a proper poster soon then. They should continue the sword theme. I never understood why the book has a helmet on the front ??????

Much better than that crazy crown-hand last year, feels more in touch with the Sean Bean poster from season 1.

Whoever designed that poster should be let go, it’s generic and lazy.

This is the teaser poster, not the official poster for the whole season, the way the hand-with-the-crown was.

IT is not awe-inspiring exactly, but it sets the grim and dark tone of the upcoming season nicely….
I like hte three swords in the zero bing similar to the title font “O”… 3 swords for 3 kins that will fall….. although may not fall until Seaso 4 I guess
Let the promo season begin!
Huzzah! Huzzah! Huzzah!

Awesome! Love it, it’s a great teaser. Although I would have rather they not use the American way of displaying dates (Yes I know HBO is American) but it would have looked cooler with the Sword part in the center.
The apparent focus on 3 has me thinking, are we gonna see 3 big deaths, 3 weddings, 3 leeches this season?

Off topic and maybe already posted but I see that Luke Mc Ewan who played “Rast” in season 1 tweeted:
“Next up off to finish on @GameOfThrones filming”

Guess that means he’s filming in Iceland since NI is wrapped right?

I assume the “background” of this poster is supposedly the seat of the iron throne viewed from above? Quite nice details in this teaser actually, although I agree with Nick that it would have been nicer to have international date formatting and the swords in the center.

On the subject of “Three” – I had an idea for another Season 3 poster: On the poster show the three brides (Sansa Stark, Margaery Tyrell, and Roslin Frey) – perhaps not show their faces. In the background show particular characters watching them (for example, Tyrion overlooking Sansa on the left shoulder, Joffrey overlooking Margaery on the left shoulder, and Edmure Tully overlooking Roslin on the left shoulder), and also some kind of scheming character also (Tywin Lannister overlooking Sansa on the right shoulder, Littlefinger overlooking Magaery on the right shoulder, and Walder Frey overlooking Roslin on the right shoulder). And show blood splatter across their gowns. Most of it over Roslin, a bit less over Margaery, and even less on Sansa. It’s just an idea I had that I thought would look great.

I like it a lot. Striking and even ominous in it’s simplicity. The positioning of the swords evoke the pattern of the white walkers’ scene of carnage from S1 ..echoed again in the circular wear and tear pattern in the background just above ( which simultaneously might suggest a crown ,as well as the Fist )..
The background itself might be a battle scarred wall .The dark splotches that trail down under the swords could be seen a s blood stains , while those at the top and bottom take on storm cloud-like patterns.
I like the two light marks to the right and above that circle..they might almost be figures in an adversarial stance…while from under the 31 , moving diagonally to the lower right corner it’s easy to “see” an army on the move ..lots of head and shoulder-like shapes with lots of subtle vertical strokes that could suggest spears or swords..
Very cool. Very spare , with a lot of intentional ( I’m sure ) subliminal messages/ images.

Publishers choose book covers. Also thse are the 2011 editions, the 2005 or maybe 06 I forget did have a sword on the cover. The original ’96 haardcover of AGoT had a metalic foil cover with the Iron Throne on it. The original hardback of ASoS had a scene depicting Hoster Tully’s funeral. And that’s just the American edditions, UK and other foreign markets will usually have their own covers

Ahh that’s great! Disappointed that Boardwalk Empire is almost finished (I’ve really enjoyed this season even more than Season 1 and Season 2), but obviously more excited for a teaser trailer for Game of Thrones: Season 3.
I suspect that we will see this years In Production video first. So, a reasonable expectation for that would be sometime/anytime in the next 18 days!
Michael HarperQuote Reply
I think the background is supposed to be the Wall, which makes sense:
Putting that slight crack in it is supposed to be omnious, although ultimately meaningless (ice cracks and melts off the face of the Wall continuously, only to be replaced later on). It also makes sense as the Wall is the ultimate destination for a lot of characters this season: Jon, Sam, Bran, Stannis & Melisandre, (though that may not be revealed until Season 4) and of course the wildling army.

what I love about the poster besides the 3′s is the fact that the swords in the 0 looks like a Lyre… which hints at certain ‘events’ where music and ‘swords’ are invloved…. CANNOT WAIT!!!!!!

On the higher resolution image I can make out a Wolf head to the left of the H in HBO and to the right of the O and slightly above I can make out a Lion’s head. You have to let your eyes relax, like in those optical illusion posters.
Above the 3 swords, it looks like old cave drawing images of either wolves on their hind legs or the dragons. My eyes were getting crossed so I stopped for awhile.
There are probably other images hidden within the teaser.

Perfect teaser. HBO’s publicity team is second to none.
It appears powerful and intriguing … yet remains minimalist… with just enough simplistic art that basically says, “this show kicks so much ass that this is all we need to display for you to know what it’s referring to … and if you don’t know, then you’re a fool for missing this awesome series and you should feel much shame to go along with your confusion!”

Michael HarperQuote Reply
Oh and there’s no way they would have used the Euro/Intl dating system. GoT is a show made by an American network, with US producers, writers, most of the directors, etc. They of course sell it overseas but that doesn’t change the fact that it’s a U.S. production that just films overseas. I’m not diminishing the contribution of the other countries, they’re a huge part of the success. It’s just the poster is originating from the U.S. HBO network, so it’s unsurprising they’re going American style.

“There will be no shelter from the storm” is a great tagline. The word shelter subtly references the laws of hospitality. Bonus points if they work this into Mellisandre’s incantation while during the rite of leeches.

In English, might that translate as “There’s no shelter from the storm?” I know the tenses are a bit different, just trying to think of what typical taglines sound like.
I’d say we have to wait and see if that’s the actual tagline. it could just be the Spain Facebook page being witty and throwing a line out there.
Ours is the FuryQuote Reply
31.03.13 Wow, that’d have been so cool! With the swords on the zero it would almost turn the number into an image and visually you’d see 31.3.13 and that looks so mysterious, cryptic, and full of impact. Maybe they will release a poster like that for the rest of the world. Here’s to hoping!

Think they’ll keep the pattern? “Swords are Coming”? I don’t like that.
DemeQuote Reply
I’m guessing that “No shelter from the storm” is not the official tagline. I thought they would use some variation of “Clash of Kings” for the tagline last season, but they went with “War is Coming”. So it seems like they aren’t typically looking to the book titles for inspiration. The status with the poster was probably just someone from Canal’s marketing team who has read the books being clever.
Winter Is ComingQuote Reply

Ok so I have been trying to figure out the whole numerology thing. Since they used a US date (month.day.year) and the numbers add up to 11, we can surmise that the 11th letter in the English (US) alphabet is K. Three lines form a “K”. These lines look like swords. Three swords in the poster. Swords can kill. Kill begins with “K”. K is for Kings. Three Kings. K is for Kraken. All things revolve around the Kraken.
