HBO to air a first look at new characters Sunday night

HBO has let us know that a new “In Production” featurette will air tomorrow night at 8:54 P.M. Eastern Time, prior to the finale of Boardwalk Empire.  The Game of Thrones: In Production video will feature “interviews with the creators, cast and more,” providing our first official look at season three and at some of its new characters!

After the first look airs on HBO, it will be available online at Making Game of Thrones, as well as HBO.com and Game of Thrones‘s youtube channel.

Ours is the Fury: I love the In Production videos, and I’m excited to see the new cast members. Personally, I’d like to get a look at the Tullys and Riverrun. Who or what are you hoping to see?

  • Hmm, I hope it isn’t all interviews.

I think Thoros, Mance and the Reeds are probably the sightings I’m most hopeful for.

  • Awesome!

Although I got kind of sick of all the production videos before Season 1, I really miss them this year. Hoping to see Mance!

  • Har, I’d love to see my favorite wildling, Tormund. But also everybody else. Daario could be another, because he looked kind of weird in that pic we got. And MY bear, of course!

  • I really want to see what they do with Orell, Reek, and the Reeds. But mostly Mance. I’m really crossing my fingers for Jon’s storyline this year. Here’s hoping he doesn’t stay so… non-Jon.

  • Can not wait. Off topic, but Boardwalk has been great this season too. Looking forward to that finale.

Hoping to see Edmure and The Blackfish.

I know it’s a stretch but I’d love to catch a glimpse of Beric in there as well. Can’t wait for his introduction.

  • More Ros please.

And Yes, Boardwalk has been the mutha fuckin’ shit this season. Gyp Rossetti is the best HBO character since Al Swearengen. Word to your mother.

  • Footage is Coming.

DVR is set, but I’m not sure if I can wait til 8:54 PST to watch in HD. Damn you Comcast for only carrying East Coast HBO in SD!

    Reeds, please

  • Can’t wait to see our wildlings.

BTW, does anybody no what they’ll be doing this year with Mace Tyrell? I haven’t seen his casting announcement, and he would be a weird character to leave out.

  • I really hope we see Thoros in costume. Probably no chance of seeing Iwan Rheon but hey I can hope

  • I am so excited to see what Meera will look like…

    Green leather, frogspear? Straightened hair?

I can’t wait to see her come to life on screen! Also, hope we get to see the Unsullied too!

  • So, to put things in perspective, last year we were shown glimpses of:

    Stannis
    Melisandre
    Margaery
    Davos

I feel like the Tullys are definitely going to be there, both Edmure and Blackfish. Then maybe one or two of Orell, Tormund, QoT, or the Reeds. Brotherhood? Hmm, not sure. I don’t think we will get Mance.

  • BLACKFISH!!!!!! also, ‘Arstan Whitebeard’, the Reeds, and Mance Rayder. Shireen & Selyse would be great as well. oh, and I want to hear some High Valyrian!

  • Boardwalk Empire has been great this year. I wasn’t sure how it would be go after they killed Jimmy last season, but it’s been fine. I was sad to see Manny go so quickly early this season. Spoiler tags in case people are still catching up on that show. But yeah Gyp is very entertaining.
There are so many new characters this year and only a few minutes of video time, so I’m worried we’ll only see a few of them. But even a montage would be good.

Next season, probably. he doesn’t do anything BIG early enough that they need to put it in this season.

  • I am looking forward to getting a look at Mance, and the Tullys, and of course Tormund. They’ll all be great I’m sure :)

As an aside, I have been rewatching season 1 for the first time since it aired. Of course I’ve seen the episodes more than once, I would watch them multiple times during the week they aired, but this is the first time I’ve actually sat down and watched multiple episodes back to back. Doing it like this it’s surprising how little the things I remember griping about two years ago actually stick out. It’s a remarkably well-done show, and come season 3 I’m going to have to remember to shut my gob until the season’s over and I have a chance to view it like this, before I knock anything. I love how much of the casting is so great, including characters like Benjen and Aliser Thorne that are so minor.

  • wargsareawesome,

I could seem them giving Mace’s seat overseeing Tyrion’s trial to Olenna. I’m not sure if that would work under Westerosi gender politics though. After that I’m not sure. Certainly Highgarden needs a lord.

All I know is I always wanted a good exchange between Tywin and the Queen of Thorns, and now that it would also be an exchange between Charles Dance and Diana Rigg, it’s pretty much a necessity.

  • Boardwalk Empire first 6 eps were very underwhelming Imo but the second half eps have been outstanding and I agree with many that Rosetti is a very entertaining character , much like Van Arsdale …as for GOT I hope they show the new Beric and Locke !!!

  • Looking forward to getting a look at Mance, and the Tulleys. Oh heck I’m looking forward to the new series! Hurry up March 31!

  • Interesting that it starts at 8:54. Either its not starting immediately before BE or its going to be longer then the original 2 minutes reported earlier. I hope its not just inteviews too although in fairness it will probably be sort of difficult to show some stuff this year

  • Oh gods, i can’t decide whom i’m looking forward to seeing since there are just SO many amazing characters coming!! is it sunday night already?! *waah* can’t wait that long! but it’s gonna be awesome and then trailers will be coming XD

  • HBO is introducing quite a Iron ship load of characters this season; my opinion is there will be three or four production videos. One will concentrate on Mance and the north, the second, Tully’s and Tyrells, the third will be Dany’s story arc (Arstan!). We may get a forth, Tyrells and KL in their own video, thereby the Tully’s and possibly the Vale in the second.

  • I wonder if they will stick to dividing the production videos by film location like they did with the Notes From the Set videos last year…..

I would think they would mostly have footage of the cast filmed earlier in Dublin and maybe not have Iceland or Morocco stuff ready for promos just yet.

My guess is that we will get some of the Riverrun and the Tullys, maybe some of Arya and the BWOB. I doubt Dany or Jon scenes wlll make it into the first promo, but maybe a very brief cutaway interview with Emilia or Kit being that they’re quite popular….

  • Tobias M….er I mean Edmure! Also can’t wait to see how they interpret the Reeds, oh of course The Blackfish too-damit I will take any bone I can get. My just be me but it seems like we’ve had less clues to the season this time around.

  • I think they’re most likely to show the Tullys and the Reeds, and maybe the brotherhood., and that the Night’s Watch stuff will come in later trailers. I have a feeling that they’re going to be rather secretive about Daenerys’ storyline, and we most probably won’t see Arstan Whitebeard or Ramsay Snow until the season starts.

  • Also it better not be that little promo video they released a while back b/c that sort of what it sounds like. You know the one where all the new characters intoduced themselves.

  • I think ‘Boardwalk Empire’ was pretty lackluster for the first 7 or 8 episodes but has been really good the past few. I’m not crazy about Gyp. I think he is cartoonish and not at all complex. Also, Van Alden and Chalky are criminally underused. And I still have trouble believing Buschemi in his role. Having seen the most recent seasons of ‘Breaking Bad’,’Homeland’, and ‘Boardwalk Empire’, I believe ‘Game of Thrones’ has a legit shot at winning the Emmy for best drama next year. Of course, ‘Mad Men’ could rebound and have an excellent season 6, but the other shows I mentioned all had weaker seasons than last year, IMO.

I can’t wait to get a glimpse of Mance, Tormund,Ramsey, the Brotherhood,QOT, and the Blackfish. Oh seven hells, I can’t wait to get a glimpse of everyone! Even the frogeaters.

  • I don’t know if anyone’s mentioned her yet – hoping to see the Queen of Thrones! And the Reeds. Anyone, really. So pumped!

  • A woman would love to see all the new characters ASAP, but especially that bad boy Daario. Oh yeah, bring it dude.

  • As much as I would love to see him, I don’t think they would/should show us Beric yet. His character should have a semi surprising reveal. It would kind of ruin it to show him in a production video. Im not sure how zombified they are going to make him but I would bet they are going to use VFX to some extent. Its unlikely they would show us anything with VFX in a production video, especially a character (unless that video happened to be about VFX).

Maybe they will show some of the brotherhood though. Fingers crossed.

  • Can’t wait.

Just watched the first 7 episodes of The Hunted. Riveting stuff. Stephen Dillane and Patrick Malahide are amazing.

Also I got my first look at Richard Dormer, he will be great as Beric. What a presence he has!

  • As a non-reader, I just want to see the old characters/actors, the Stark kids (particulary Arya) or lannister kids would be awesome.
Edit: And by Lannister kids, I mean Tyrion, Cersei or Jaime.

  • House Snow:
Also it better not be that little promo video they released a while back b/c that sort of what it sounds like. You know the one where all the new characters intoduced themselves.

Since they’ve budgeted 15 minutes, and that video was like 90 seconds long, it really doesn’t seem likely.

  • Gosh, anyone, really! But maybe Tormund and the Reeds. I hope Tormund will look suitably impressive – though that hair/beard combination alone more or less achieves that. And I hope the Reeds look a bit… different than others. They already do, but their clothing/styling should accentuate that.

  • Boardwalk Empire has been great this season, it really has. American Horror Story Asylum and Walking Dead have also have had excellent seasons so Game of Thrones Season 3 will have it’s work cut out in the Emmys but the signs are good from the little smidgits of info that we’ve had. Personally I’m looking forward to seeing Riverrun in all it’s glory but I’ll be just glad to see ANY footage of season 3

  • Tyrion Pimpslap,

I think Boardwalk has Ben excellent all season, not a single weak episode. As for Mad Men, season 5 was just about it’s best season (much better than S4) and it should not have lost to the good but overrated Homeland.

Had Storm of Swords been made into one season, I’d be confident of it winning, not sure if it has a chance though as it is.

  • Looking forward to this! My guesses:

Mance- been name dropped all of s2, non-readers will be expecting him to appear anyway so no great spoiler. Ciaran Hinds is great, show him off!

Olenna- she’s a key character and if she’s as much fun to watch as to read about will steal every scene she’s in. I do hope she has some scenes with Tywin. Got to introduce her.

Edmure- the Tullys will be important so need to be talked about. And hopefully a bit about Riverrun too, maybe we’ll also see the Blackfish?

Preferably not Beric as I’d like his return to be a surprise to non-readers.

The Reeds are a maybe, I consider them less vital than the others mentioned- Bran’s story moves slower than most so they might keep the new characters as a surprise.

  • I want to see Hippie Thoros. I really do. Maybe he can make me a veggie grilled cheese sandwich if I get him Phish tickets???

Boardwalk always has two or three “slow” episodes where they focus on character development and less plot. One of these episodes was the Richard one when he goes over the girls house for dinner. I felt the first three were strong, then the character episodes, strong again, one more character one, then strong till the end. When you rewatch the season as a whole, with no expectations, all the “slow” episodes fit into place and is more enjoyable.

  • According to the On Demand HBO schedule, there will be a new HBO 2012 Yearend video available 12/3/12 On Demand. I’m assuming they will be showing this tonight first. Maybe it will contain new footage for the new season of GoT in the “coming next year” portion.

As for who I’d like to see in the new video, there are so many new, exciting characters, but I’m probably most excited about Jojen & Meera and Mance.

  • Certainly Ciaran Hinds, the famous face and voice. Surely Diana Rigg, the famous name. I suspect the Reeds, and I’m hoping for Missandei. I’m inclined to think that Beric and probably Thoros too will be kept on the shelf, though maybe Anguy (whose role, I’m guessing, will combine some of that of Harwin in the books) might be seen with bow and arrow in hand. If we have fifteen minutes we’ll see all the returning featured players at least briefly — and yes, I hope that that includes Ros.

  • There isn’t anyone that I don’t want to see…

But if I had to choose, then its the Tullys and the Reeds.

  • oh, so when it is gonna be in europe. I always forgot how much hours is the difference and i am tired of googling it up all the time! Can you please please next time put there also eu time in brackets? It would be so nice!

  • mariamb18: There isn’t anyone that I don’t want to see…

Well, at first I didn’t want to see Ros (imdb has Esmé credited for at least the first episode of season 3). Now, I’m apathetic about Ros. Love Esmé. Got no use for Ros.

In previous posts, I’ve said I’m hoping to see Tormund.

So, him, and Olenna for new characters. Returning characters?
That’s easy. Margaery. Because Natalie Dormer is so effing hot.

  • I literally just want to see something. That’s how desperate I am. This show is the best kind of drug sometimes.

  • Winter Is Coming,

I am sorry but I believe there must have been some kind of mistake? I just checked my email and I still haven’t received any reply from you regarding any prizes I have won

  • I’m not gonna ask for much. I just want to see in this clip:

    Edmure
    Blackfish
    Daario
    Selyse
    Shireen
    Queen of Thornes
    Mance
    Tormund
    Beric
    Thoros
    Anguy
    Missandei
    Grey Worm
    Reek
    Jojen
    Meera
    Locke
    And Stephanie Blacker’s character.

    That’s all.

  • Tormund. And one knows this is farfetched, but just a little glimpse of the giants he’s the bane of.

  • Currer Bell:
Tormund. And one knows this is farfetched, but just a little glimpse of the giants he’s the bane of.

That very well may be one of the last giants

  • YAY! Where do we start….MAnce Rayder! Oh Yes Mance please! Tormund, the Tully’s oh there are so many I want to see.

  • Here’s hoping we get to see everyone’s favorite gal tonight, Ros, can’t wait.
I love Esme, and oh, chalk a vote for a glimpse of Val and whomever Charlotte Hope is playing.
These supporting players need some fan love.

  • I’m looking forward to Shireen Baratheon, and Selyse Baratheon (I wonder what their costuming looks like), and also all of the Slaver’s Bay characters.

I do like Natalie Emmanuel, but I’d hoped they’d have gone with someone who was much darker, to emphasize that she’s one of the few characters actually from Sothoryos. Lighter skin makes her look like just anybody from Slaver’s Bay; though I hope this looks better on-screen in-character.

    Oh, and Olenna Redwyne.

  • Hi-Fi,

I just don’t understand all the Ros hate, the infamous play with her ass scene was not her fault.
Esme has displayed talent in her scenes and is improving as an actress (she’s gorgeous to boot), can’t wait to see what the spider’s intentions are for her.

  • I want the false king’s queen. I want his daughter and his red witch. I want his wildling princess. I want his little prince, the wildling babe. And I want my Reek. Send them to me, HBO, and I will not trouble you or your black crows. Keep them from me, and I will cut out your bastard’s heart and eat it.

…The Tullys would be neat too.

  • Here’s my season 3 episode names :)

    Episode 1: Sam the Slayer
Episode 2: king beyond the wall
    Episode 3: the brotherhood
Episode 4: it rhymes with weak
Episode 5: how to trade a dragon
    Episode 6: the lightning lord
Episode 7: her name is Brienne
    Episode 8: autumn storms
Episode 9: The rains of castamere
Episode 10: lannisters pay their debts

  • I wonder if one of my true favorite characters (also Alfie Allen’s) Pyat Pree will make a return after being made into toast by our Khaleesi’s dragons.

    Just kidding, however.

    =)

  • Josla,

What made Daario look weird in that pic to you? I def agree that he looked much different from his book description- much more toned down- no blue beard or gold teeth, but I’m not sure I’d say he looked weird- just different. But curious to hear your opinion.

  • Tom O’ Sevens,

The only ones I like are episodes 8 and 9. I think ‘The Reynes of Castamere’ may be the perfect title for that episode. Certainly better than ‘Bread and Salt’, which I have seen suggested.

  • Watson:
    wargsareawesome,

I could seem them giving Mace’s seat overseeing Tyrion’s trial to Olenna. I’m not sure if that would work under Westerosi gender politics though. After that I’m not sure. Certainly Highgarden needs a lord.

You really think Tyrion’s trial will be in this season? That would require putting Joffrey’s wedding in this season, which is highly unlikely. Also, if he were in this season, news of him being cast would almost certainly have leaked by now. They may have him show up Olenna, but be in the background and then recast him later, as they did with Beric Dondarrion, but short of that, he’s not gonna show up this season. And Highgarden wouldn’t be the first ruling castle to not have it’s Lord show up for a while… look at Riverrun and Dragonstone. And there is no way they are going to show us the Lord of Sunspear right away — likely it’ll be at LEAST half a season between the introduction of Oberyn Martell and the introduction of Doran Martell.

  • I can’t believe how excited I am for this small tidbit! I want to see the Reeds and Mance. I wonder what kind of costuming the Reeds will get and what the weapons will look like.

I’ll bet the Stark kids are going to look quite grown up. It’s amazing how a years growth changes a person.

  • Zack:

Words well said. I feel the same way.

  • Hollyoak,

This is true of most TV series, I’ve noticed. For example, I am expecting my opinion of Fringe’s final season (and the series) will be quite different in the end. The weekly viewing means you have a week to set up your expectations and what you think/hope will happen; when it doesn’t happen you feel let down. Watching all the episodes in marathon viewing means you can get the to the bigger picture faster. Also, it helps keep up the excitement and momentum, which can sometimes die down when there’s a whole week or more in between episodes.

I’ve watched Game of Thrones season 1 at least 4 times and season 2 at least twice. With each viewing, I find I enjoy it more and more and am very proud of everyone involved with the series.

  • Season finale of Boardwalk. Mid season finale of Walking Dead. AND an in production featurette for GOT season 3. Serious TV abundance tonight.

  • The Reeds, The unsullied, the Queen of Thorns, Edmure Tully, Brienne and Jamie, and Beric and his flaming sword. What did I miss?

  • I love the Reed outfits!! A bow, hmmm… no spears? That’s ok.. Meera looks Aryaesque kick ass. So serious Jojen.. love it!

  • Meera looks great, they didn’t go with the green leather and straightened hair, like I would have liked. But I aint complaining, hell last year we didn’t even know if D&D would give us our Reeds. So happy, she is very pretty and has big, very aware, eyes.

I am happy with Meera and I am so glad they at least will give her a bow, still hoping for the frogspear though =) I can’t wait to see this online so I can pause it and look at her outfit, I bet its very detailed. Someone please post this online ASAP!

  • The guy in the center of the riders with Bolton banners looked to be Noah Taylor – I guess Locke will be a Bolton man?

  • I only hope they don’t spend any longer than 30 seconds on Dany. I’m getting fed up with how much attention they give to her storyline.

  • And I just noticed Tyrion carrying a large book…could that be a wedding present for somebody perhaps? And I guess Meera won’t be carrying Jojen at any time in the future, maybe they’ll switch that around? Why is a woman watching this over and over?????? NERDGASM!
