Haha love this week’s choices for the GoT Laughs! I’m an enormous HP Nerd in addition to my love of ASOIAF, so any reference that connects the two is always great ;) Oh, and the last one is simply hysterical! I bet Ned never knew that all those biology classes at school would someday pay off XD (I’m still waiting for the day when mine do… :P I made more of those little genetics charts than you can count! Haha)

Man! I really hope Martin prepared something big for us in the Winds. I think he haven’t killed that many characters lately and I am so eager for an event like RD.. or death of characters like Dany, Tyrion or Arya – because I think people once again started to think he just cannot kill them, because they are important for the story and they will be there til the end haha :D

There was a funny counter-meme to the “you’re adorable” one, but I can’t find the pic at the moment (just got up and need my coffee… xD). Basically it’s GRRM saying, “it’s hard to finish a long novel series”, and JK Rowling replying, “you’re adorable”.
I don’t normally condone the “writer faster GRRM” whiners but that was kind of a good zing, you have to admit ^^

In defense of GeekFurious, the Harry Potter novels are much simpler from an artistic standpoint. GRRM is a much better writer, and hasn’t had Rowling’s monetary success. See, as Young Adult books, the Harry Potter series has a much wider readership, because typically, kids have more time to read (even if they don’t use it). Still, YA novels tend to send hand and fist over their grown-up counterparts. Moreover, writing isn’t a science, you cannot sit down with a formula and plug in names to scenarios and dress it up with fancy prose to get an instant bestseller. You have to take into account the flighty nature of public opinion. Harry Potter was in the right place at the right time, it wasn’t great. So, if I might paraphrase your own condemnation: It’s adorable how trite you are.

While I normally try to stay out of fan arguing, I am of the opinion that anyone that says JK Rowling’s writing isn’t good hasn’t taken a good look at her books. There are references to things way before they come into play like in ASOIAF. She is masterful at writing character interaction, including characters getting distracted or cutting themselves off as happens in normal life. Both Rowling and Martin are good authors with very different styles. And no, she wasn’t simply at the right place at the right time. She does in fact have talent. Not anyone could write like her.

A general observation…a woman has noticed that commenters have gotten a bit cranky lately, with frequent squabbling over petty things observed. Why can’t commenters simply let things go if they don’t agree? Is it necessary to turn a fun fan site into a pissing contest over every reference one doesn’t agree with? Please people, for the sake of the overall tone, can we respect that others don’t always agree with our particular tastes and not squabble? Peace on earth and all…(climbs off soapbox).

(This may not have been directed at me, but if it was:)
I know, I know. And I usually try not to enter into online arguments because in writing I often come off as either way too wishy-washy or harsher than intended. It is never my intent to insult someone, and just because I dislike a particular opinion does not mean I dislike a poster or disagree with them necessarily on other issues. However, I have always thought part of what is great about fan sites is being able to see the conflict in opinions as long as it is pertinent to the topic.
I see it as a problem when the arguments get personal, with fans insulting each other as opposed to discussing the actual issue.
(Basically what Addy Stark said. *Tips hat*)
P.S. TBH what bothers me is less people disliking JK Rowling and more people saying anyone could write a series. To write an entire book with complete plot and developed characters is difficult. To write a series is more so. Most couldn’t do it never the less do it well, go through editing, and get it published.

Right, because it is so easy to plot a series through seven books, come up with all the characters, keep tracks of them – not to mention all the beautiful language she has in her world: Muggle, Hogwarts, Quidditch, Dumbledore, Avade-Kedavra – the list is huge – they are all wonderful, emotive words.
Whatever you think of the Harry Potter series, you are fool if you deny the creative genius it took to think up that world.

Thing is though, when you consider how much longer the ASOIAF books are compared to HP, Rowling didn’t really finish any earlier than Martin did.
I’m making my predictions now:
Jaqen H’ghar kills Sam in Oldtown
Mel brings Jon back from the dead, a la Thoros
Victarion and Barristan both die in the Battle of Meereen.
Brienne kills Catelyn, then dies herself.
Littlefinger pushes Sansa out the Moondoor.
