New season three teaser released

The newest teaser for Game of Thrones features a three-eyed raven and a familiar, haunting song.

Ours is the Fury:
It’s a great, albeit brief, teaser bringing us from our world back to Westeros. We should be getting a more substantial preview soon, with the Invitation to the Set video on January 21st.

  • Definitely not their best, but showcasing the three eyed crow gives me hope that they’re really going to get in to the northern mythology and such.

  • Pretty horrible teaser, but it does have The Rains of Castamere with a hint of drums in it so that made it slightly better!!

  • Very disappointing with the series just two months away. Even a snippet of a character or hint of story would have been nice.

  • I have to agree that it’s a pretty weak, and potentially confusing trailer. Anyone who might be newer to the show or thinking of picking it up could be confused by this one.

  • Man, they’re really trying to implant ‘The Rains of Castamere’ in our heads for some reason, eh? Heh.

After I said “Heh” I died a little inside.

  • I’m sorry but Iwas ecstatic there ! Just the Rains and three eyed crow did it for me … I did go Eh? at one point … then … ohhhhhh ! Ha ha !

  • Not very good. I appreciate that they’re giving us something, but this just wasn’t very good. …meh’.

  • When I recognised Venice, Paris and Florence my first thought was “Wait, did I miss something while reading the books”? Then I understood they wouldn’t show any actual footage and got a bit disappointed…

  • That was strange. It would have been better if the 3 eyed crow was flying around Westeros. I love that they are focusing on the ‘Reynes of Castamere’ though. They really seem to be holding back the footage for season 3. Hopefully that means they are hard at work at getting the best possible end product.

  • It’s literally a teaser. It’s not meant to be a preview. Equivalent to last year’s where we had the stock footage of dark forests and the Stannis voiceover, I’d say.

  • I take it as being this year “Cold winds are rising”… Good, now that this is done we can expect a real trailer…

Otherwise, this is quite a daring trailer, and I must admit I appreciate the dare… it is unusual, weird and quite experimental and I hail that. Even if the rendition and CGI is damn ugly and atrocious.
And did someone get what was in the reflect of the water when the crow flew over it ?

And yes, the Rains are here… I guess they will definitly put them sometimes during the season and remind us that it is a “Lannister song”.

  • YvyB:

Yes, I thought the teaser was pretty fabulous, despite the lack preview. Very creative.

  • Too bad at the first instant I thought that was Kings Landing in the shot… Sigh… Well it was still pretty good, but we WANT some real GOT footage!

  • The Cold Winds are Rising teaser was way better.
This seems rushed, uninspired…and it’s certainly confusing a lot of people, a friend was asking me if the characters were going to travel to modern times somehow, hehehe.
Yeah, it was a letdown for me. Really lame teaser.

  • Shane f:
Why does it show skyscrapers and stuff?

Because that’s “our world”, and it shows the “3 eyed crow” from Westeros flying from “Their world” back to “ours”.

By the way did anyone notice what looked like someone kneeling when the crow flew over the puddle?

  • This may be the first time ever that I felt let down by something “Game of Thrones”. Oh well, I’ll just wait for the next trailer.

  • I liked it somehow. Got way to excited in first instance, thinking it was a trailer. Recovered from that quickly though.

And as said, there’s drums. boom doom boom doom boom

Wondering if there are really people out there, thinking that there’ll some portal to modern times or something like that next season.

  • Hear Me Roar:
Probably less of chance for a proper trailer this weekend, then … Just my opinion.

In HBO’s email to me, they noted this is the trailer airing this Sunday. So yeah, no proper trailer coming this weekend. We probably won’t get something until next month now. Sucks.

  • I feel like they’re going to soft peddle any actual footage and try not to start the buzz too early. I’ve been thinking about how impossible it’ll be to actually keep the RW a secret for 9 episodes. I just worry it’ll get into the public and people will be expecting it.

  • In another way, it’s quite creative. Not too much information, just the three-eyed raven and a special song. It’s a start of really getting “Rains” into people’s heads. So that when it starts playing at a certain wedding, we’re going to really deeply know exactly what it is.

  • Andrew:

It’s near impossible to avoid spoilers in forums, youtube or facebook pages, so a lot of people will be expecting it from day one I’m afraid.

  • Not sure what to make of this. Daring in that merging Westeros and our world crosses such a distinct line, when for me GOT exists in a totally separate dimension. I do like hearing the R of C song.

Also reminds me of the season 3 trailer for HBO’s Six Feet Under. It didn’t have any clips from the show, but instead had the characters (and the raven) on top of skyscrapers. It was all visual metaphor.

  • Okay I’ve seen this twice and I must say…

It was GOOD. I like how it uses real world locations, with our reminder of ‘their world’ coming in the form of the crow. And that ‘Rains’ rendition; haunting and foreboding. Like ,no wait LOVE it.

A great change in teaser style to help symbolise a great ‘storm’ of changes to come

  • I like it. Though clearly part of the message is “stay patient, folks, we’re still in post production.”

But that said, I’ve been hoping they’d play this season close to the vest. They had more previews than they needed last year, IMO. And if there was ever a season for playing up the mystery, it’s this one.

  • It’s literally a teaser.

    Exactly my thoughts afterwards.

Well that and a bit of …

That wasn’t even a teaser that was just a tease.

But I like it for what it is.

  • That teaser is a fake. The video is made by someone who make his own trailers, and the crow´s eyes are only seen in the final moment, wich has been taken from a Bran´s dream from season 1. No new images, not in a GoT or HBO official channel . Just material of other cities, with a crow on it, and with the song on it… I don´t know.. i don´t buy it

  • Ok … now I’ve had time to think about it … It like a party invite from the three eyed crow …. bringing us back from our hum drum lives into the world of GoT … just make sure you eat some bread and drink some water …. if ya know what I mean …

  • feyrband:
am I the only one who isn’t a fan of them using “GoT” in these videos?

Realy? I love that ! We as fans have been using the GoT expression from the start … makes me feel part of it …

  • YvyB: Realy? I love that ! We as fans have been using the GoT expression from the start … makes me feel part of it …

while i recognize that, but like most acronyms, developed out of laziness/convenience and i just expect more epicness.

  • feyrband,

Patience … the epic will come ! Raines does it for me … chills !It could of been a black scrren with Raines … and I would of been happy …:D

  • If you’re looking for a year to year comparison of when to expect teasers/trailers, last year:

The “Cold Winds are Rising” teaser (also with no footage) came out in the middle of December.

The first actual trailer with footage, the “You Win or You Die” one was released right at the end of January. Then there was another one a week later. Then the final trailer “Seven Devils” (with the Florence and the Machine song) wasn’t released until March.

So, aside from this teaser being released a little later than last years, we’re probably on track to see the first real one in about 2-3 weeks.

Also: as an FYI, teasers almost never include actual shot footage so anyone expecting to see some should have tempered their expectations. The trailer (which will have tons of footage) isn’t expected for a little while longer.

  • Yep. It seems their behind schedule or their withholding footage to prevent spoilers (yeah right!) It’s going to be a weak promotional season methinks.

  • I think people are missing the point of this trailer, which isn’t to appeal to new viewers but to get fans of the show fired up about returning to the world of Westeros/Essos. Judging by the responses here it obviously didn’t work very well.

Me, I liked it, after some initial confusion. I think it’s the world itself that draws people in more than specific characters or aspects of the plot, so I liked that emphasis.

And the 3-eyed raven adds a nice touch of creepy/weird to make newbies go “Huh?”

  • Man, all they need to do is flash Joffery’s mug up there and people will get all fired up. Just a little bit of footage, please.

  • It´s a cool teaser but I expected something more, we are on january :/
Do we know if The Mountain is going to appear this season?

  • I feel if they made the real world monuments and buildings start morphing into westeros monuments (The Wall, Red Keep etc…) this would have worked a bit better. I do like the song though.

  • It absolutely worked for me after I thought about it for a few seconds. As has been said, a teaser is just that…something to put G0T into your head and naught more. A way to remind non-G0T fanatics that “Oh yeah, I’d forgotten about that.”

I, too, am afraid that far too many non-book-readers will be spoiled for the RW, but in a way I think that’s not necessarily a BadThing™. If everybody is so focused on episode 9’s horrorshow, then all the other WHAM moments from the first half of ASoS may slip under their radar and ultimately be even more surprising than that one scene.

  • Winter Is Coming,

That cold winds trailer was worlds better than this one. It does seem like they are slow playing the promos this year, kind of stinks but I’m okay with that. I feel liked I watched the promos/trailers too many times last year before season 2 started and it kind of ruined those scenes for me when they came up in the various episodes.

  • I get the concept and how it might have sounded good in the agency meeting, but in practice it’s horrible. It’s so incongruous from the look and feel of GoT that it jars.

  • Awesome!

That was good of HBO to give us something to hold us over until a real trailer with actual season 3 footage can be shown.

Very clever they really start drilling that song into our heads, soon it will have a very strong meaning to all the viewers.

  • This could have been made by some first year film student at CalArts. The footage of the 3 eyed crow at the end isn’t even new, it’s from season 1. The rest of it is mediocre CGI. And the 03.31.13 graphic is pretty weak as well.

  • I don’t like this. From what I’ve read online, it makes non-readers think that the world of Westeros was our world in the past or is a future version of our world. Really weird idea for a trailer.

  • Very weak. First thing I’ve seen that’s been really weak coming out of the HBO/GoT crew to be honest.

  • I really like this teaser, at first I didn’t think it was a very good teaser, but the more I thought about it the more I liked it. The Three-Eyed Crow is Bran’s spirit guide in Westeros leading him to his destiny. Now the Three-Eyed Crow is our spirit guide leading us back to Westeros.

  • First let me state we’re all fans here. But lets be honest with ourselves … you don’t need to defend this steaming pile of excrement they are trying to pass off as a “teaser” … I would have rather seen nothing at all. Seriously I had 100% confidence in David & Dan … now its like 99.5% … They’re still great, but a little respect just died. Aside from making great programs, HBO markets they’re product better than everyone else. I have had HBO for almost a decade and watch programs like: Sopranos, Rome, Deadwood, Curb, Boardwalk … And I can say without exaggerating, that was the worst promotional effort I have ever seen HBO put together.

  • Ned:

This. The CGI was not mediocre, it was just bad. Overwhelmingly bad.

  • Ned:
.Seriously I had 100% confidence in David & Dan … now its like 99.5% … They’re still great, but a little respect just died.

I agree that it’s a horrible teaser, but D&D probably had absolutely nothing to do with it.

  • I’m rather elated , being reminded of the 3Eyed Crow. Just the sight of of him,
minus the song, harkens back to the North Country’s mysterious lore, possibly
glimpses of the Wall and Winterfell. As a whole, the vid gets a …meh… but
I’m elated and optimistic of a ominous if not spooky upcoming episodes. It’s
mostly imagination for me, the earlier 3Swords did nothing for me :D

  • Yeah, I think that’s the worst teaser of the show I’ve seen so far. It shows absolutely nothing. I was hoping for something like th “Cold winds are rising” teaser, with some glimpses and the voice of a new character.

  • Hey there was a shot of one Canadian city if you know where to look…so. I got no complaints….it is an interesting concept.

  • First time poster/long time lurker.

Felt compelled to put pen to paper, or finger to button and just add that I too found this a jarring removal from a carefully constructed fantasy world into drab familiar cities with a badly cgi’d crow flying around.
The mood that the Stannis intro had was much more intoxicating. This one just made me want to be intoxicated. Beside the song, which i can listen to on youtube (even a version with rain playing over it) it was nothing much at all. Play it on mute and see if you could guess what the hell is happening. Also the shot of the actual three eyed crow from season 1 was cheaper and nastier than a winesink whore. They couldn’t take the time to even remove the background to match the gray sky?
Okay, I can feel the meds kicking in now so i’ll just go simmer down. =)

  • I like the rendition of the song but yeah they should have shown some scenes in the trailer.

In general who ever is in charge of hyping up season 3 has done a pretty poor job, they need to pull their finger out.

  • this was bad. People who are not superfans like us will not know what the song is. having the crow fly over the real world was dumb.

I can just hope people wont see it haha

  • It gave me chills. Love the song, and the concept was interesting.

I think most people here are seriously over-analyzing what is at the end of the day a short teaser that has no real importance other than to remind people that GoT is returning.

  • over-analyzing? here? ;)

    James:

  • This teaser will doom this show! Seriously, whoever is in charge of the teasers this year needs to be forced to read the fans’ opinions of this mediocrity. What the hell were they thinking with this garbage?

  • Terrible.
Looks like they ripped off an Assassin’s Creed trailer and turned it into GoT.
    Lame!

They already did one teaser and should have just left it at that.

  • I kinda doubt HBO will care, to be honest. It’s a teaser, not a trailer. It exists to remind GOT exists. Job done. We’ll get real footage pretty soon, so I can’t be bothered about this one being arty. It didn’t occur to me at first that people might be confused by the wording because it seemed like an obvious “We’re going back to Westeros” thing but uh…I guess people needed it spelled out more clearly.

  • I liked it – think we are all a little spoiled here. Now we build through the next 10 weeks to the debut of S3! Look at it as the starting line…

  • Thought it was crap but some people may be overreacting just a bit.

All will be forgiven when the real trailer comes out. Hopefully.

  • This teaser ruined my day, possibly even my entire week. I was so pumped for the NFL playoffs this weekend and now I feel bummed out. I hate to think of all the viewers this teaser cost the show. Damn you D&D! Just let GRRM do the teasers from now on.

  • General consensus is that it was garbage and I have to agree. Quality of the trailers or “teasers” isn’t really what I’m focused on though. Here’s to hoping they redeem themselves for season 2.

  • Well, at first I was “like, WTF?” then I realized what they were doing, so that’s fine. Unfortunately, I don’t want to be thinking about our world at all when I see GoT teasers or trailers for that matter. Also, seemed overlong to show so little… and I’m probably in the minority, but I’m not wild about the song (like the words, but not the tune).
I definitely won’t say I hated it, but I liked the S1 and S2 teasers better.

  • Without a doubt that is the best teaser we have seen in 3 seasons IMO!

Notice it is a “TEASER” and not a trailer, not a promo, not a preview of any sort.
People do not seem to understand what a “tease” or “teaser” is… sadly.

  • Listen fellow Throners,

It is very obvious that HBO threw this “teaser” together very quickly and put very little resources into it.

It isn’t meant to be a jaw dropping teaser, its a rag-tag teaser thrown together quickly, for us, the fans.

There is no need to seethe with hatred and dismay over this teaser, be thankful we have anything at all.

I also got all excited and watched it and was disappointed, then I thought about what it was and watched it again and liked it.

It’s just HBO telling people GoT will be entering their living room soon yet again. That is all this is.

The fantasy world of Westeros will enter the living rooms of this modern world on March 31st, 2013… Get it?

So take it for what its worth and be happy they gave us this as we wait for the real trailers to come.

  • Darquemode,

What does it tease, though? ‘Winter Is Coming’ and ‘The Cold Winds Are Rising’ were both great teasers. They teased us with dialogue and some footage of each season. This had the ‘Reynes of Castamere’ and the drums, but no voicover. I would have preferred having no teaser than this.

  • Darquemode,

    teaser, tease, trailer. label much?
i don’t care what it’s called. it’s either good or bad. this one is bad. cheap attempt to make people talk about GoT imo.

  • That looked cheap, and certainly disappointing. Not up to GoT standards…they released far better teasers for season 2.

  • Unhappy am I with this nonsense trailer. Now if they showed the raven flying in a subway tube to come out on the other side of, say, beyond the Wall, that would have been cool & tying our world to theirs !

  • I actually got the chills when I realized it was the rains of castamere.

    But definitely just a tease.

  • One doesn’t want to seem to get one’s panties in a wad over trivalities, but was any one else disturbed by a carrion bird flying over recognizable modern cities with a soundtrack singing of death and desolation? One found it a bit squirm-inducing.

  • I really love to show support for the show adaptation but I was quite disappointed with this teaser I mean modern skyscrapers don’t even make sense.

  • I think it would have been much more effective to go with Grey Wind, over the 3 eye crow, at this point in the series. Grey Wind in a particular setting ( in woods…running or being chased) with the song would have been a much better tease. It wouldn’t have gave anything away…those that haven’t read the books, or have had it spoiled at this point, don’t know the significance of the song. Effective “tease” without any new footage.

  • jkb,

    Definitions do matter.

People use various similar words to mean the same thing, but each does mean something slighly ddifferent. As I ee it….

    – A tease has no footage and is simply meant as a reminder of an event. In this case a new season is starting soon.
    – A trailer usually has footage from multiple episodes and highlights the new season as a hole and what is to come.
    – An episode preview has footage only from one episode and highlights what is to come in that episde.

A promo is the vague term for any of the above, also including interviews and behind-the-scenes looks..

There was a reason it was properly called a tease.
Compare it to the ravens from Season 1, or the ring of fire from Season 2. This had much more put into it and was longer. It was a much higher quality production.

Comparing it to a trailer with footage and voiceovers with lines from the season is just not fair. Whether you like it is entirely up to you of course, but judge it by what it was meant to be and compare it to other teases and not full on trailers.

  • Darquemode,

This teaser turned me on. I literally had to hide myself under my desk. Seriously. I thought it was quite effective in doing what it intended on doing. It will be getting people talking about the show (which is something HBO is *really, really* good at.)

  • Darquemode,

    Totally agree with you.

    Well said, this is just a teaser that is artfully stating;

“The fantasy world of Westeros is entering our modern world, yet again, on March 31st, 2013″

That is the only purpose of this teaser. Putting the date out there. I am sure we will get a trailer soon, that “Seven Devils” trailer last year was amazing. I bet you they will top that one also. Just give them a few more weeks.

GoT is an epic, this isn’t a show like ‘Homeland’ where they have the advantage of it being shot in the real world. Lots of CGI and editing needs to be done before the footage is ready. But I promise you it will be worth the wait.

Epics cost time and money, the money part is all spent and done…

Now we are going through the “time” aspect.

  • OH MY GOD! awesome teaser…. Love the way it is promoted…. I ll put something underneath to try and not do a spoiler alert… but in the non spoiler term,… a 3 eyed raven only means one thing ;-)!

in the lines of the book “Jaime sends his regards” … Also the song of castmere just made my bones chill! 3 eyed Raven means death… So to me is gracing us with a teaser for the red wedding!

  • I don’t like the whole “They don’t owe us anything, we should be happy we atleast got this teaser, it’s better than nothing at all” argument. Well they do owe us something, we buy the $20 books, we pay $15 per month HBO, we buy the $60 blue-rays. Plus whatever other merchandise on top of that. We tell all our friends to watch it. I would much prefer no teaser at all, over that aborotion of a teaser we just witnessed. I don’t care if the first tease is Feb 11th … Release it when its ready, and when its the quality we’re accustomed to. What’s next? Iron Throne Pale Ale tastes just like Keystone Light?

  • I’m almost wondering why HBO is playing S3 so close to the vest at this point. We’ve neither heard nor seen any real glimpses yet of what’s in store this year, but I seem to recall much was released prior to last season. Given how much the popularity of GoT increased last year, you’d think they’d want to do a full court press this far out.

  • Andrew,

I feel like they’re going to soft peddle any actual footage and try not to start the buzz too early. I’ve been thinking about how impossible it’ll be to actually keep the RW a secret for 9 episodes. I just worry it’ll get into the public and people will be expecting it.

And including spoilers in your post helps how?

  • Way to take the joy out of my moment !!! Hope you’re all happy?! Buzz kills .
I was on Tumblr … WiC popped up with the trailer and I was so happy ! … But you killjoys have spoiled that for me … Thanks … thanks for nothing.

  • Macha:
Am I the only one that finds all the rage and misery in this thread unbelievably funny? Oh well.

No, you´re not the only one. But seriously, this thread could ruin my life so, I feel trapped.

  • this teaser makes it look like the new season is set in our world. must be confusing for non book readers. interesting idea… but not sure i like it… i want a proper trailer with footage from the show!!!

  • That was not even worth making. Surely they could have better spent their effort than producing that piece of nothing. It smacks of a last minute thrown together by one person vibe. “We promised a teaser by this date? I got it guys, go home.”

  • I feed on the rage on this thread. It’s so powerful! Oh HBO be as pretentious as you want, your obviously scrambling into post production. Too bad it cost us a good promo season at least the nerd rage at this trailer makes things interesting again at WicNet.

  • PeterD,

Good point. I’m curious about HBO’s current GOT advertising strategy as well. Maybe they are just playing off the idea that there is a shock and surprise around corner, so they can’t give anything away.

  • YvyB,

I’ m wonderful, how about you? I am gearing up for GOT. I can’ t wait.

I was banned from that other place for going after some idiot troll. Oh well. ;-)

  • I really enjoyed the teaser–it got me right back into “GIVE ME THRONES PLEASE SIR I WANT SOME MORE” mode. :-) I’m actually a huge fan of the Thrones world being juxtaposed with our modern world. I would never want to see “Tyrion and Jaime do Vegas” or anything of the like, but I love when other programmes reference/allude to Thrones/ASOIAF and when David and Dan relate the show to the “real world” in the “inside the episode” segments. That wasn’t what HBO was doing with this tease–as others have said, this was a straight “get ready, we’re heading back to Westeros” shoot, but it got me thinking nonetheless.

Can’t wait until the Invitation to the Set vid!

  • Come on people, stop freaking about over a teaser. Ruined your week? Really. Well darn, I wish I had the week you had.

  • My guess is that HBO thought that they should bring a real world element in for this teaser, due to the nature of the two programs premiering on Sunday. Shows like Girls & Enlightened don’t traditionally share the same fan base* as a show like Game of Thrones, so seeing the swords and men in armor riding horses might be less appealing to that particular subset of HBO viewers than what they put out with this teaser.

Either way, it was sub-par. I agree with the poster above who said they’d rather have gotten nothing at all. Ideally, they should have just aired a very well-edited and scored promo clip featuring footage from seasons one and two, if they weren’t interested in showing any footage from season three.

    * I’m a 28 year-old male who watches both Girls and Enlightened, I’m not trying to pass any judgement or make any kind of sexist remark here. Granted, I watch basically everything HBO produces, and I’m sure there are many other subscribers who do the same.

  • ITS SEASON 1 STOCK FOOTAGE OF A GOD DAMN RAVEN, PAIRED WITH A SEASON 2 MUSIC CLIP … the only thing new about it is the terrible graffics … IT’S NOT GENIUS! IT WAS A RUSH JOB … and a poor one at best.

  • The Rains of Castamere is the voiceover. Outside of there sometimes being a cool voiceover, usually there is even less video than this in a teaser. Like they could’ve spent 20 seconds zooming in on the words “Game of Thrones” and another 20 on “3-31-13″. Admittedly I’m letdown there’s no full trailer this weekend, but once you accept it’s a teaser, who cares between x teaser and y teaser.

  • Oh Seven Hells! People relax, we’ll get something soon. Then we’ll get 10 awesome weeks of program and be right back here going through withdrawals again.

Think about that for just a minute, and then be grateful for what we are about to receive.

  • MG:
So, was this a teaser for a new urban fantasy show named “GoT”?
No? Well, color me confused then…

Maybe they are trying to imitate ABC’s “Once Upon A Time” – that series that has fairy-tale characters that live in the modern-day world!

    Viola:
When I recognised Venice, Paris and Florence my first thought was “Wait, did I miss something while reading the books”? Then I understood they wouldn’t show any actual footage and got a bit disappointed…

I thought the same thing! I knew that was the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris (complete with gargoyles) but I thought how did I miss that in the books? Saw Venice and Florence and I think I even saw Pittsburgh! Hopefully, potential new viewers will think this is a “teaser” for some other show. I send friends and family (who don’t watch the show yet) the unbelievably great fan-made videos on youtube – which put this mess to shame.

  • Heh, the outrage in this thread is pretty funny, but I can understand it since we fans have gotten almost nothing trailer or behind the scenes related, and the third season premiers in about ten weeks. So the widespread disappointment doesnt surpise me, but i still find it a bit silly :)

  • The last shot is EXACTLY the same shot we see in Season 1 during Bran’s dreams. Copy+paste. Pretty lame.

  • Ned:
ITS SEASON 1 STOCK FOOTAGE OF A GOD DAMN RAVEN, PAIRED WITH A SEASON 2 MUSIC CLIP … the only thing new about it is the terrible graffics … IT’S NOT GENIUS!IT WAS A RUSH JOB … and a poor one at best.

your first two points are the parts i have the least issue with. they could’ve just played the song with clips of a field, castle, forest, etc. while it was raining, and been better off imo. even a few other old clips just of the characters. this one really did nothing for me other than the song, the visual needed something else.

  • Mel,

I look at it this way. D & D are spending all the money on the actual show. Why spend tons on teasers, etc? They know they have a captive audience!

  • This is something that could have aired in November. It has nothing from season 3 in it. Here is the teaser from season 2 : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ucOW5xGGoc Are you really going to tell me the season 3 one is better? BTW, last year’s ‘Cold Winds Are Rising’ teaser aired in December. And this season 1 teaser was great as well: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xVytEgSO0wQ Most of the ‘outrage’ is facetious, at least from me, but this was a pretty worthless teaser, especially at this point in the year.

  • always funny to see on internet discussions: people complaining about people complaining (and yet other people making fun of it…or complaining).

I’ll be in the first-order complaining battalion in this case: that was on an esthetical level a very ugly trailer, and not that much better on an artistic one.

  • I liked it, I thought it was a real interesting idea and they executed it well, I am however, glad, that people are raging over it because it is quite entertaining. I do think, though, that if we had of been expecting another tease than the reaction might have been a lot different. Also I think it’s a bit premature to say that the whole promo season is ruined.

  • Al Swearengen:
I like the rendition of the song but yeah they should have shown some scenes in the trailer.

In general who ever is in charge of hyping up season 3 has done a pretty poor job, they need to pull their finger out.

I am with you brother ..,

  • Arkash:

And did someone get what was in the reflect of the water when the crow flew over it ?

It looks like a kneeling knight to me. A reference/homage to Robb, perhaps?

  • Yeah, I agree with almost everyone else, that was kinda terrible.

Just hearing the Rains makes me mad and excited though.

  • Damn you D&D. You just decreased my chances of having children by lowering my sperm count because I jizzed so hard to this teaser.

I think they could have used a nicer filter but other than not liking the version of the song, its not too shabby.

  • The Greatsteve:
Man, they’re really trying to implant ‘The Rains of Castamere’ in our heads for some reason, eh?Heh.
After I said “Heh” I died a little inside.

    Heh.

  • You guys are hilarious!
Considering the vast media collection we have to feed our GoT appetites, this little number is quite incidental. But it struck a chord with me.
The World of Ice and Fire, or rather its AU, has become a constant in my quiet life. If I’m not accessing that world through my household portals, i.e. my recorded series, the DVDs, or the books (I’m currently on my 5th read of all 5), then somewhere in the back of my brain I know that at any other time my favorite Westerosi are savagely beating one another to bloody pulps, pompously denying the existence of dragons, worrying about winter coming, or kvetching about the lack of feminine convenience products. Okay, that last part’s only in my head.
But this “tease” hit a chord with me. It’s the meshing of universes part. I find it almost jarring to think that P. Dinklage and the others are contending with the same modern day annoyances that I experience. All those folks – they exist on a separate plain. Their earth is meaner, grittier, more magical and infinitely more interesting.
(I’m sure I’m alone in this nonsense. Yes, I know. I need a life. I knead a life.)
This teaser is a teeny reminder of wonders to come. Very teeny.

  • Well, that was awful. I view a trailer as being good if it stirs up some excitement for the new season, and that trailer just felt completely flat.

    Hopefully they’ll have something better.

  • Found it terrible, really disliked the modern city mashup they had. But it’s a teaser, so, you know. Meh

  • I don’t know about you guys, but anything above and beyond a burning ring of fire and a line of dialouge is a good teaser in my books. I enjoyed it. Still can’t wait for the actual trailers, though. The ones last year, especially the one with that Florence and The Machine (I think) song in it was amazing.

  • All of you monkeys bitching and moaning about how bad a teaser this is..I NEED TO SEE 7/10th OF A SECOND FLASH OF FOOTAGE ABOUT SEASON THREE, BLAH BLAH BLAH…its a fukking tease and its completely appropriate giving how OBSESSED we all are with the show/books. A tease is meant to build buzz and have you say to your buddies (if you have any) GOT is almost here – you should catch this shit because its motherfukking righteous! And besides, if you think about it – it works on mucho levels – sorry they didn’t show a behind the scene flash of john snow’s balls. Christ.

  • Questions – Was that Charles Dance singing the Lannister song?
Am I the only one who liked this teaser? Echo from the past…calling us? Power games remain essentially unchanged? Our world today is still affected by the War of the Roses? History geek that I am, my heart skipped a beat…

  • Monica,

Your not alone. I appreciated the teaser, it’s HBO’s attempt to sell to another audience and do something different. As a fan of good television I welcome it but the die hard ASOIAF fan inside me loathes it because it didn’t satisfy my desire for more season 3 visuals.

I wonder if HBO knows how much their approach to marketing season 3 is driving some fans crazy? Of course they do!

  • Lol. People here are funny.

I’m in the somewhat unpopular minority, I kind of liked this teaser. Initially I was confused and a little let down like so many others here, but then I watched it again. Then I thought about what it meant and what it was alluding to. It’s interesting, unexpected and it excites me for season 3. This IS just a little teaser- nothing to shit yourself over.

  • I’m going out on a limb with some blasphemy here.

I don’t like the melody they came up with for the Rains of Castamere at all. I think it’s terribly blah.

  • HBO’s entire schedule was thrown out by the cancellation of ‘Luck’ hence the early return of ‘Girls’. Guess that might have a flow on impact them having time for editing new footage.

  • I was O.K with the trailer because it has some very nice visuals and features that song about that lord. However, the initial reaction to the trailer was really confused – “wait, why does this building look like a church? and that gargoyle? wait a SKYSCRAPER? are we in the real world? oh, I get it, it’s ‘returning to our world’ with a new season. say what?”.

I got used to the idea after a couple of minutes but I can only imagine how jarring and confusing this would be to a non book-reader. I’m expecting to exaplain the fine points of this trailer (“No, characters from Westeros are not going to go through a dimensional gate into our world this season…”) to my friends and family quite a lot in the next week. Ah well, it’s an excuse to talk about GoT, how am I to complain.

  • Well, tbh, last year’s swarm of teasers, trailer, featurettes, invitations to the set and what nots hindered my enjoyment of the series at least a little. (For instance; they were raping Varys’ lines over and over again last year.) So I really don’t mind the lack of material.

  • Pepi,

Agreed. They make way too much trailers for GoT. I would be pretty satisfied with only two. But not with this confusing teaser crap. The more I think about this teaser, the more angry I am.

  • Settle down guys it’s a teaser.

If people blow their stacks over a teaser I would hate to think how people act when something bad happens to their favorite character!

  • This was absolutely shit. Seriously? HBO’s marketing is usually impeccable! How could they drop this after Seven Devils, the best trailer ever?

  • Arya Dunyett: But this “tease” hit a chord with me. It’s the meshing of universes part. I find it almost jarring to think that P. Dinklage and the others are contending with the same modern day annoyances that I experience. All those folks – they exist on a separate plain. (I’m sure I’m alone in this nonsense

Agreed. I never liked that whole meshing of universes, as you say, in fantasy. Like with Narnia. This is obviously not quite on that level, but still. Keep our worlds seperate, I say.

  • KG,

I think the music itself is fine, it’s just that the National’s rendition is the wrong mix. Go on to YouTube where there dozens of covers available that are set to the melody that Djwadi created and they are a million times better.

  • sjwenings: Agreed. I never liked that whole meshing of universes, as you say, in fantasy. Like with Narnia. This is obviously not quite on that level, but still. Keep our worlds seperate, I say.

Oh, I don’t know. It’s like modern-day annoyances, like worrying about financial futures or over-population, are especially different to the stuff Westerosi have to deal with with their, you know, financial problems and stuff like Pale Males.

  • didn’t like that I’m afraid. Although it did bring back memories of hearing that song being played on the RW set. That was a serious goosebumps moment!

  • So, that was that. “Their word returns to ours.” Hmm. Made me think: ABC’s Once Upon a Time meats HBO’s GoT. That could be cool. Littlefinger could be a city councilor and — oh, wait…

  • Rimshot:
didn’t like that I’m afraid. Although it did bring back memories of hearing that song being played on the RW set. That was a serious goosebumps moment!

Go on! Tell us more! But not too much.

  • Still no word on a trailer for tomorrow’s premiere of Girls. Are they really going to make us wait until February before they show any season 3 footage? I know there’s another In Production video coming next week, but still…

  • I liked it. It was different and unexpected. And it confused and angered the great unwashed evidently!

  • FilliamHMuffman: Still no word on a trailer for tomorrow’s premiere of Girls. Are they really going to make us wait until February before they show any season 3 footage?

WiC said in some thread that this teaser is the one they’re gonna show with Girls. Unfortunately.

  • We have the “Invitation to the Set” video on the 21st, and there’s usually peaks at the show in there. Maybe not finished footage, per se, but we should get a good look at the characters and sets.

  • Ryan71:
They may as well should have just had Tyrion flying in a superman cape.

But that would have actually been creative and interesting!

  • Sure guys you know the drill by now. Can’t say anything about the shoot. Suffice to say it will deliver.

Here’s a bit of useless/harmless trivia – when David Nutter was directing it he usually ended up covered in candle wax, as did most of the crew!

One of my proudest moments as an extra was when we had finished on the shoot, all the principal actors, the crew, the director and David Benioff gave us a huge round of applause and thanked us for our hard work. It was a bittersweet moment as we knew we were done on that incredible scene. I’ll take that to my grave. Can’t wait to see it on screen.

  • Rimshot,

That’s outstanding! It seems like a really collegial atmosphere, from the peeks we civilians have gotten from the set.

This tease, too, seems more geared towards fans whose threshold for involvement in Game of Thrones is much closer to the level of, “oooh, The National! And a weird bird. Oh, yeah, I guess the show is coming back in March. Neat.” A shame we can’t have a substancial trailer sooner, but it’ll just make the full trailer that much more exciting in a month or so.

  • Lisa,

We’re all fans. This means we’ve all put a lot of time and love into the series, and are very excited about S3. You’ve no right to judge others’ disappointment

  • If we get a trailer this Sunday, that would make three videos in one week.

Does that sound about right for this time of year? Seems a bit excessive…

  • NousWanderer: You’re not the only one.

Fact is, there are many of us that think the same….to this and the original comment
from Macha. Unfortunately the laughter cannot be heard over the louder “moaning,
    weeping, and gnashing of teeth”.

  • Arya Dunyett:

This teaser is a teeny reminder of wonders to come. Very teeny.

    So true.
Amusing that “Huff Post” and “EW” is reporting that GoT teasers are giving away
too much information about the upcoming season. They list the same teasers
and interviews that we’ve seen here at WiC :D……..may have been tongue in cheek tho.

  • Arthur,

I agree with most of what you said, but for this:

    Arthur:
There is no need to seethe with hatred and dismay over this teaser, be thankful we have anything at all.

I can’t see why we should be “thankful” for anything, when they’re not doing us any favors here since HBO is not for free. And believe me when I tell you that there’s many folk who subscribe to HBO only because of this show.

So while they’re certainly under no obligation to come out with any trailers (be them teasers or otherwise), if they’re gonna do it, then they can and should do much better than this.

  • What I have learned from this thread:

Some people desperately need an extended walk in a forested area, away from suburbs, computers and television screens.

The amount of energy poured into reacting to one little teaser is beyond belief.

  • Mike Chair:
So, that was that.“Their word returns to ours.”Hmm.Made me think: ABC’s Once Upon a Time meats HBO’s GoT.That could be cool.Littlefinger could be a city councilor and — oh, wait…

Or if he’s really lucky … maybe even Govenor! ;-)

  • I had no idea what they were going for at first in this. I was like, “MAN THEIR VERSION OF OLD TOWN IS REALLY MODERNIZED!”

  • So far, both teasers for Season 3 have been the worst teasers they’ve ever released.

Let’s hope it bears no relation to the quality of the upcoming season… :/

  • Even WIC didn’t really like it. It’s okay to feel like it was a crappy teaser that will confuse some non-readers. We expect better from HBO’s marketing is all.

  • I think the lack of promotional content is because HBO isn’t throwing as much money at it this time around and are using it for more useful purposes, for example more work on VFX. I expect trailers to come out but not until mid february and when they do come out it wont be as often as last year.

  • MX,

Heh, you see the number of comments, right? This isn’t one person ranting for ages about how this teaser is going to sink the season. In general, it’s quite a large number of underwhelmed people writing a sentence or two, or maybe a few paragraphs in the odd case. Doesn’t exactly take a lot of time to fire off an internet comment, either.

So from what I can tell, you’re as guilty of hyperbole as the worst complainers here.

  • The Anchoress:
    Rimshot,

That’s outstanding! It seems like a really collegial atmosphere, from the peeks we civilians have gotten from the set.

It really is a family atmosphere as we’ve all been working on this show (and others) for a few years so we know each other pretty well. This round of applause was very unexpected though as we normally just wrap and that’s it. I think the crew wanted to acknowledge the effort that was put into the scene. We worked our asses off!

  • Zack,

Let’s call it a clash of cultures. I have not owned a TV in the last fifteen years, and I do not know how to drive a car, yet I like the intrusion of the raven into our world.

On the other hand, some people here who have not seen a forest or a medieval city in a long time and who practically live through their TV screens protest about how they want to keep fantasy and reality strictly separated, and act as if the teaser were betrayal or a threat to their construction of reality. A bit absurd, isn’t it?

I don’t think I erred on the side of a hyperbole, it’s a fact that people who watch a lot of TV tend to get heated up about ridiculously trivial matters. Let’s consider Wilko’s terminal cancer — surely a bigger reason to be upset and grieved than a teaser….

  • That was a worthless teaser, and an insult. Why even bother? I think they are getting lazy, knowing we are going to watch even if they put up a trailer showing Honey Boo Boo up there, arguing with her sisters about which clan is best.

  • That is an absolutely awful teaser on so many levels. I cannot believe HBO are releasing this. GoT is famous for it’s production value and the first teaser they release for their new season has absolutely NONE!
The VFX are awful – just awful. Maybe they will argue it is “stylized” but it looks like a school project.
And also the whole concept of the teaser – “Their world returns to ours” – is this a show about parallel worlds whereby we can step through a portal and be transported to the magical land of westeros?? No. There is no link whatsoever between the two worlds so what exactly are they trying to do?
And they’ve devalued a song that was perfect in Blackwater by just chucking it into this mess for the hell of it.

If I had never seen GoT and I saw this I would think this is a show with the production value of Stargate or something along those lines.. if even that!

If HBO air that on tv heads should roll Ilyn Payne style!

  • I am quite pleased with how I look in these clips – in fine form, if I do say so myself. And make no mistake, I am a Raven, not to be confused with a Crow, which is murderous, while we Ravens are merely unkind. As I have travelled a considerable distance between the worlds to bring tidings, a small show of appreciation would not go amiss.

  • Seriously guys? Is this teaser worth all of this hatred? I don’t care for it, but an insult? Whatevs.

I like the premise behind the trailer just thought it was sloppily executed. Oh well it doesn’t change how I feel about the show. HBO is remiss in the marketing department for season 3 for some reason. It could be that their scrambling to get the reshoots finished. Perhaps they rushed season 2’s production in interest of making HBO’s promotional schedule. If perfecting the finished version of the show is going to cost us a weak promotional season than so be it.

  • Joshua Taylor,

Yeah, it sucks but it’s not a statement on the quality of the season. Marketers aren’t the showrunners, generally speaking.

I think the essence of my dislike of it is just that it seems so utterly generic. It could have been done entirely after season 2 had completed, prior to any filming or production of any kind on season 3. Could have been fan made. It hardly requires any knowledge of the book the season is based on. In some situations, that’s fine I guess, but we had mostly been expecting at least a taste of the season, via a new piece of footage or dialogue.

  • I can see how it was supposed to be a good idea, but unfortunately like most of people here have said, it just didn’t work. Even without any real footage about season 3 it could have worked, but it just didn’t. No ups and no downs, no climax, no narration, nothing to grasp and nothing that grasped.

Maybe something happened and they weren’t able to fully divert their attention to the teaser. Maybe it was just a fast backup that had to be done. Who knows… maybe someone from inside can ask?

Oh well. At least the music was good.

  • Dear all who says it is a bad trailer,

You may want to look after the difference of meaning between ‘teaser’ and ‘trailer’…
