MGoT: Intensity Of Iceland video

A new behind-the-scenes video has been released, focusing on the filming in Iceland for settings beyond the Wall. It features our first look at Mackenzie Crook as Orell, and includes interview segments with Crook, Kit Harington, Ciarán Hinds, Rose Leslie, Kristofer Hivju, David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, and episode directors Daniel Minahan and Alex Graves.

Ours is the Fury: It’s exciting to finally get a look at Mackenzie Crook, and to hear from Kristofer Hivju as well. The Iceland footage always looks amazing.

  • Spectacular – I love these videos!! I adore Ciarán Hinds’ voice – he sounds utterly perfect!

  • Even though I haven’t seen a single episode of season 3 yet, I’ve already fallen in love with Kristofer Hivju

  • I imagine it would indeed be a joy to see such a beautiful country.

Side note, I am really anticipating Jon’s story this year. Book 3 has the best Jon stuff.

  • Stephanie, I agree. His voice is amazing, I wouldn’t have expected it, having not seen him in anything before.

Gah, although this makes my itch for the season 3 trailer all the stronger, it’s always nice to see these behind-the-scenes videos.

  • “When the Long Night comes, north of the Wall becomes the kingdom of the dead.”

    I got geek chills.

  • I hope they fill the background with loads more wildlings in post-production. From what can be seen in the video there’s only a handful of them following the KingBeyondTheWall. It’s supposed to be a whole army!

  • It seems that there is no filming of the night watch battle against the white walkers, does anyone know if that would be in the third season or would they omit the scene?

  • This was one of my favorite videos. I’m usually not all that excited by them, but to see the actors in this amazing location is very magical and otherworldly.

The premier is the day after my birthday! C’mon March!

  • Zack:
I imagine it would indeed be a joy to see such a beautiful country.

It really is as spectacular in real life as well. However, If you do go there, prepare to be hit with the quite incurable need-to-get-back-to-Iceland bug – hit me seven times in the last two years… ;-)

  • omg, Mackenzie Crook looks like a crazy person!! :)))
all are great, and I finally got used to seeing Ciaran Hinds as Mance Ryder… I did have problems, because of the Dominic West almost casting… Hinds will be great!

  • Winter Is Coming,

A woman also was thrilled to hear the King Beyond the Wall speaking at last! Wow, looks so beautiful and cooooooold! Not my favorite weather, but it really looks like the North as GRRM has described it in many ways. Evokes the stark (pardon the pun) nature of the battle to live in that landscape.

  • xavier:

Most likely they shot that in the studio, and not in Iceland.

Everybody looks amazing, the scenery is gorgeous, and I’ll be spending the rest of my day seeing Mance with earmuffs.

  • Winter Is Coming:
“When the Long Night comes, north of the Wall becomes the kingdom of the dead.”

    I got geek chills.

That is one kick ass quote, don’t remember it being from the books.
Jon’s storyline this year should be a good one!

  • With only 5 hours of daylight it makes sense there’d only be a handful of extras to transport to and from locations, but they can shoot around that, or, really, shoot to the landscape.

Can’t wait for more, Mance sounds perfect!

  • I loved seeing all the Wildlings with their industrial strength earmuffs/ headphones on as they try to keep warm in the sub-zero chil between takesl! XD

Kristofer Hivju looks amazing as Tormund. Never doubted it after casting, but to see a nice clean clear shot of him…. HAR!

    Winter Is Coming,

I’m guessing that line will be used in an upcoming trailer!

  • There are giants, mammoths, ice-spiders, wights, Others, Thenns, cannibals and free folk up there. Nowhere does it mention trolls, however.

  • xavier,

I have the feeling that they will omit the battle itself, just like the book. Since Sam wasn’t on the Fist when we last saw him, they might simply follow his perspective and only show the outcome of the battle.

  • Clob,

    I hear you!
I went outside to get the mail and take out the trash and by the time I got inside my barely damp hair had frozen and I had very red cheeks and nose… I like the cold honestly, but subzero windchills are a pian!

  • tormund! mance! orell! scenery! yowzers! keep em’ coming!

Oh and looks like Kristoph didnt need much make up from his picture on the cast page, he looks savage.

59 bottles of beer on the wall…

  • Cool, the shot with all the rocks looks great. I just hope Sam the Slayer happens in the haunted forest. What I’m looking for the most north of the wall will probably be in season 4. Bran’s story (finally) gets interesting when he crosses the wall and meets Coldhands. Really looking forward to Bran, Hodor and the Reeds beyond the wall. Fighting the cold, the hunger and the White walkers. That is when I became really invested in Bran’s POV. Who would’ve thought he’d be North of the Wall :P

Also looking forward to Bran being Summer while awake and controlling Hodor. Crossing my fingers for Arya’s wolfdreams in season 3.

  • I suppose I’m in the minority here but what I’ve seen so far of Hinds, he seems a little too….serious? I don’t see TV Mance being a singer, for example.

  • Qw3rtz,

I do hope they show the battle, even if it’s only a few seconds long and they end the scene with an unclear outcome. If Sam’s first shot is after the battle it’ll feel kind of cheap, though I suppose the producers/writers left him stranded and alone with the White Walkers for some reason.

  • I only read the books after I saw the first season of game of thrones, and I must say I don’t know how long time fans os asoiaf were able to tolerate the massive wait between books I am positively going crazy waiting between show seasons, the time after season 1 did not seem bad because I had the books to read including dance with dragons but this year waiting for season 3 with nothing but winter is coming makes me truly understand the struggle of long time fans I tip my hat to you all as I now join your ranks I love this show glad for the video.

  • That country looks absolutely amazing. Seeing this video makes me so want to go there, like LoTR made me want to see Nieu-Zealand. And I actually envy the cold because I’m currently dying of the heat south of the equator :D But no, it looks severe. The weather will definitely contribute to the story-telling this season in a gritty and ominous way. And do I detect a forest across that river?

Every actor looks very fitting in their costume, even seeing Jon in some fur is a welcome change. I hope Kit Harington is done some justice this season. Mance’s line opens up a whole new world and the wildling culture is one I look forward to a lot.

Damn, Kristofer, Mckenzie, Ciaran, can’t damn well wait. And remember, Giantsbane sounds better than Giantsbabe. HAR!

  • Biobi,

It’s likely that they merged Orell and Varamyr. They probably chose the name Orell over Varamyr because Varamyr sounds Valyrian and is similar to Varys and Viserys.

  • Hinds actually sounds a bit like Sean Bean at the end, so it’ll be nice to have a familiar, fatherly voice back in the show.

Kristofer Hivju, did he act in The Thing?

  • Winter Is Coming:
“When the Long Night comes, north of the Wall becomes the kingdom of the dead.”

    I got geek chills.

Same here. Chills being an understatement :)

It also made me wonder if maybe we’d get to see one of these for the fire/life side, aka Morocco/Dany, as well, given that 3 swords promo thingie.

  • “OK we need to make a 2 minute video about shooting in Iceland. Start interviewing the cast and crew.”

    “What should we talk about?”

“Everyone just find different ways to say how impressive the scenery is. Here’s a thesaurus.”

  • The_Rabbit:
    Winter Is Coming,

yes, almost same as “what do you know about winter, sweet summer child?”

    Close, but it’s
“Oh, my sweet summer child, what do you know about fear?”

    Blaat,
    Biobi,

Yeah, in ACoK Orell was the wildling warg that Jon killed during the ambush, who lives on as his Jon-Snow-hating eagle.

  • I am absolutely speechless. I think i speak for all of us when i say all game of throne fans are incredibly lucky to have ppl like david and dan who are passionate about the story and they go to extreme lengths to bring it to life. Thanks to HBO and all involved in this herculean task.

  • The men beyond the wall, sweeeet! And they aren’t really filming in Iceland (wink), that’s Michigan!

  • It is always nice to see the old country… even though they film in areas of Iceland that don’t look like where most Icelanders actually live. But I have never been to those areas of Iceland during winter. I’ve only checked them out in the summer when there is 24 hours of daylight. :)

  • Nick Larter,

It does look like him. There’s nothing listed on any of his resumes including his Spotlight one, but I’ll poke around a bit and see if anything turns up.

  • The “Kingdom of the dead” line rocks my world.

Immensely excited about this season as well as the next book, “The Winds of Winter.” GRRM has said that he’s writing material that take place much, much farther north of the wall. The homeland of the Wraiths, perhaps?

  • king of the North,

I completely agree. Most TV companies wouldn’t even consider going to Iceland for a big and long location shoot.

I’m just blown away by how good Iceland looks for the show. Who cares if there aren’t any trees? :)

Giantsbane look exactly how I imagined him, and Mackenzie Crook has a wonderful look for a Wildling. Getting so excited for this season!

  • Kristofer looks great as Tormund, but I can’t say he is how I imagined or how Tormund was described. In the books Tormund is about 15-20 years older and much shorter than Hivju

  • Mackenzie Crook’s face at 0:47 looks hilarious. Poor guy is freezing his ass off. He doesn’t have much insulation.

  • Awesome ……cold ! Mackenzie Crook of the Frostfangs ( area) finally speaks,
as does Mance…… absolutely great !

  • Amazing! I, too, got geek chills at Mance’s line.

I am already sufficiently creeped-0ut by Orell…in a good way. Hivju is a perfect Tormund. And they all look really cold.

  • Henry:
“OK we need to make a 2 minute video about shooting in Iceland. Start interviewing the cast and crew.”

    “What should we talk about?”

“Everyone just find different ways to say how impressive the scenery is. Here’s a thesaurus.”

Haha, exactly what I was thinking the whole time. Still a great taste of season 3.

  • Am I the only one who wishes they filmed in Ireland? It sounds strange to say, but I think the environments, the weather and their outfits in response to the weather, overwhelm the actors (especially Kit Harington). They never seem comfortable.

  • Al Swearengen,

I’ll take more of these behind the scenes features any day. We’ll all survive until they release an actual trailer. And once they do release a trailer we’ll get 3 or 4 of them with mostly the same footage.

  • Tyrion Pimpslap,

I’ll take trailers over these behind the scenes videps any day of the week because trailers generate more interest and excitement. Don’t get me wrong I enjoy these Vlogs but I prefer watching them on the Blu Ray.

  • Al Swearengen,

I understand the desire to see a trailer, but I don’t feel entitled to one. Trust me, a trailer airing a week or two later than usual isn’t going to kill us.

  • Dave:
I suppose I’m in the minority here but what I’ve seen so far of Hinds, he seems a little too….serious? I don’t see TV Mance being a singer, for example.

Saw him on stage last year as the captain in ‘Juno and the Paycock’ – he was hilarious, both with his voice and with the physical comedy. [If you don’t know it: the character’s a bombastic, pompous, drunkard, charismatic, unemployed old Dubliner who thinks he’s smart and educated and spends his time finding reasons to avoid getting a job, and annoying his wife and daughter, while trying to impress people. It’s an extremely black comedy (or funny tragedy), and Hinds did brilliantly at both pathos and bathos]

Short version: I don’t know whether his Mance will be too serious – but if so, it’s because he’s given the wrong dialogue or direction. He’s certainly got the range to play it with a light edge if he wants.

  • The video is so funny. You can practically see the thought bubbles “We better not be coming back here next year” Everyone puts on a good face but I think people are less then thrilled about shooting in that weather.

  • House Snow:

Exactly. As beautiful as the scenery is, it’s really not a good environment for filming.

  • Oh, this is brilliant. March 31st, will you just bloody arrive?!

Yay–Jon has Longclaw back in his possession. I can’t wait to see how he gets on with Mance. And I must say…not to go all fangirl! on you lot, but I expected to savour the time/view with Kit on screen, but should I be having the same reaction to Kristofer Hivju? :-) Ah well…as Lena Headey pointed out in her S1 commentary, it’s all about men in fur and grime XD

  • sedeyus,
No, I think filming in Iceland enhances the storyline. Thrones actors are great — Nina Gold knows what she’s doing! I like Kit Harington’s portrayal of Jon Snow. I didn’t like Jon Snow’s storyline in Season 2, but that was because of how the producers adapted book 2 and their writing for the character not the acting.

  • In the books, I read Mance as charismatic and slightly flamboyant. Am I the only one who thought that? If not, I think we will be seeing a very different Mance in the show. A harder, more serious version that may fit Beyond the Wall better.

  • arden:
really intrested to see what they do with Orell hopefully warging with jon

Ya know, that may be what brings Ghost back. Jon starts warging this season (accidental or purposely) and we discover what Ghost has been up to.

  • Mel:

This. I really hope they’ve given the Iceland gang more to work with this season. I’d like to spend more time appreciating the dialogue, rather than the scenery and cheekbones! Am still really thrilled they’re filming on location because the scenery is so beautifully eerie.

  • He sang in Phantom of the Opera. He was one of the opera owners. Not a bad singing voice..but a much better actor than singer.

    Dave:

  • sedeyus,

You’re not supposed to be comfortable beyond the wall!!

But seriously I don’t really see what you mean. Beyond the wall is meant to look pretty damn cold. Snow, ice, blizzards etc. You couldnt really get that in Ireland. Ireland is great for the north, the wall, the riverlands etc but beyond the wall – has to be somewhere like Iceland. I’m so glad they go to the real places not just VFX stuff. Think it will look amazing on screen.

  • Arkash:
I really fear Mance is gonna be Stannis 2.0 in the show ! Please prove me wrong !

What do you mean? Stephen Dillane is doing a fantastic job as Stannis IMHO.

  • Nezzer,

I think he/she meant Hines portrayal of Mance will be a guy with a stern demeanor rather than the charismatic musician from the books.

  • Benioff: once more with feeling.

The landscape is about as exciting as the famous Sopranos episode in a snowy NJ which has nice snow and trees.

  • Tyrion Pimpslap,

Yeah, but I don’t understand the comparison with Stannis. Apart from the badly written “give you a son” scene, Stannis seems like the exact same character from the books to me.

  • Nezzer,

You still don’t understand. He/she is saying Mance will be stern like Stannis, not that Stannis wasn’t like the book character.

  • Nice!
The only think I’m curious now is as why is Milton Yerolemwoeorw attending Game of Thrones events with other members of the cast (this is not the first time). Could it be that Mr. Forell is making a return in a future season? ;D

  • Wastrel

I saw Hinds in The Woman in Black too, where he played a father who had lost a child. He had this positive disposition throughout the film but underneath there was this suppressed grief. We’ve heard him say two lines and now everyone’s concerned. I’m just glad to see there’s more dialogue between Jon and Mannce than in the book, seemingly. But what you said about that they might give him the wrong direction and dialogue, is a realistic fear as that is what happened to Kit last season.

    Mel and Spearwife

I feel Kit plays Jon as slightly more idiosyncratic in the show than in the books which I quite enjoy. I never read the books before I saw season one, so there was no expectation (I did get them for S2, having begun reading). Book Jon is great to read, but I sometimes feel that he is completely devoid of feeling, especially in aDwD (but there are good reasons for this by then). Rather his emotions are in the subtext. I’m just thankful Kit never went Orlando Bloom on Jon’s ass (a predictable way of playing the character). Kit has the authority of voice and the subtlety (like he displayed in S1) to develop Jon into the leader he needs to become. And the great scenes with Sam and Ygritte in S2 was pretty much the only time he got to shine. S2 was in any case Alfie’s season.

  • Oh my, Didn’t read the comment about Guðmundur Ingi þorvaldsson before so… Now I’m also curious about what role (If him) he might have. After all I read he auditioned for GOT, I think.

Gods!! Is it only me who find David Benioff intolerably handsome? Oh dear!

  • Pondering what we might see in the upcoming trailer thats not too spoilery..

Some NW men running from the WW/Wights – doesn’t necessarily mean they all ran.

Jon coming to blows with some of the Wildlings – meaning Rattleshirt, possibly others.

Maybe telling us they’re heading for the wall? It would make for a big “uh-oh!”

Maybe a bit of romance brewing with Ygritte – every non-reader sees that coming anyway.

Arya meeting the Hound, but we don’t see who it is. A hand on her shoulder, she turns around and gasps – something like that.

Tyrion/Sansa and a jelous Shae. Without telling us of the upcoming marriage.

    Dany considering purchasing

Maybe some Dany/Jorah about to kiss – we’ve seen it coming anyway, right?

    Jaime and Brienne fighting, obviously.

    Bran meeting the Reeds.

Robb struggling politically – something with Karstark, and men leaving his cause.

I don’t know if theres 3 or 4 trailers to be made from the material (this and whatever else) without showing or repeating too much, though. But a couple of really exiting ones, definitely!

  • Jen@House Stark:
The men beyond the wall, sweeeet! And they aren’t really filming in Iceland (wink), that’s Michigan!

LMAO ! I was tempted to say this too, LOL, but didn’t wish to offend any Michiganders
visiting here. Stay warm and avoid snow drifts with hidden piercing blue eyes behind.

Winter is Coming…….. or will entrenched in Michigan ( the Siberian sister city ).

  • Tyrion Pimpslap,

    Oh, I see. You know nothing, Nezzer… (: þ)

Moving on from that, I saw on a trustworthy Brazilian blog some leaked info saying that Joffrey’s death scene has been filmed, although, according to them, it’s uncertain if the scene is going to be delayed to S4 instead of being used in S3. I confronted them about the veracity of the information and they say the source is trustworthy. I still don’t believe it, though. How could such a big scene evade the all-seeing-eyes of WiC.net and Westeros.org to be leaked on a much less resourceful blog? I also hope it’s not true for many reasons.

Here’s the article (it’s in Portuguese, but you can always use Google Translator =D) : http://www.gameofthronesbr.com/2013/01/novos-rumores-sobre-3-temporada-de-game.html

  • Nezzer,

I wouldn’t trust a Brazilian fan site to get the scoop over WIC or Westeros. The fact that this ‘insider’ isn’t sure if it was shot for s3 or will be held back for s4 tells me everything. They wouldn’t waste precious filming time by filming a scene for season 4, and anyone involved in the production would know this.

  • Tyrion Pimpslap,

Well, it wasn’t the source that said he/she wasn’t sure it was filmed for S3 or S4, it was the writer of the article that speculated that. Still, I don’t believe it either, but it still worries me. I’ve followed that blog for a long time and it has always been great, so it’s hard for me to ignore it and dismiss it that easily. I really don’t want to see that scene in S3.

  • And I have a feeling Ghost will pop up when we least expect him to, probably (hopefully) in relation to Jon’s warging capabilities. Maybe we’ll see some kind of perspective of something walking in the snow / looking up at mammoths and see it from that thing’s perspective and then realize it’s Jon/ Ghost. I liked that Ghost was never there to help Jon fight Quorin.

  • Arkash,

I love Stannis and I love Stephen Dillane as Stannis !

My fear is that Mance is gonna be another grim King, never smiling, cold, distant and stuff… whereas he should be a smiling bard, sympathic and charismatic.

Thank you, Tyrion Pimpslap for speaking my mind ! :)

  • Nezzer,

Well, WiC did report a scene being filmed that involved 300 extras, women in updo hairstyles in a week when Cat Taylor tweeted that three character death scenes were being filmed and a crew member tweeted about eating leftover medieval cake. Then, about a month later, they had specific reports that T&S and the RW were being filmed.

  • Tyrion Pimpslap,

It makes sense if you think that they don’t want to bring Jack Gleeson back filming season 4 just for one scene. Plus, IIRC, Gleeson wants to drop the whole acting act.

  • Carne:
    Nezzer,

WiC would have heard about if from various sources if this has been filmed.

We don’t really know that though.

We don’t know if there will be a battle at the fist filmed, we’re just assuming something will be shown because of James Cosmo’s statement in an interview.

Did we hear reports of Jason Momoa coming back last year?
I can’t remember but that was kept secret and so could Joff’s death.

  • I can’t remember for sure if there were rumors about Momoa, but I think there was a rumor going around that he had visited the set in S2. I wasn’t entirely surprised when he turned up in the House of the Undying.
As for Joffrey, there has been some speculation based on the promotional photos, based on the episode numbers and in particular the Sansa photo. I don’t think it’s very solid, but anything’s possible. As for the Brazilian site, I don’t speak Portuguese (and Google Translate is iffy) so I can’t quite tell if they are quoting their own private sources or if their spec is based on someone else, like these other blogs who are speculating about the photos. It is possible we’ll see him die this year, and that his death may happen without a wedding to Margaery.

  • Yes, there were rumors of Jason Momoa being on set last year, filming a scene with Rhaego. We didn’t make a post about it though because we didn’t want to get any one in trouble. Some poking around in old posts will lead you to finding a discussion of the scene in question…

  • Ours is the Fury:
It is possible we’ll see him die this year, and that his death may happen without a wedding to Margaery.

removing Purple Wedding sounds way more horrible than a bloody red wedding

  • No doubt, Iceland is a surreal location to film, but I always pictured there being more trees beyond the Wall, especially since Bloodraven is living in one. I’m not complaining. Just sayin’…

  • zob,

IMO, in the TV series they changed the location of the Fist of the First Men and now is more west – closer to Frostfangs than in the books.

  • I wouldn’t put too much weight on Jack Gleeson’s expressed desire to give up acting. He’s young, probably will change his mind. Lots of actors have said that at one time or another. Evangeline Lilly said it after Lost, but now she’s doing movies, including the second two Hobbit films.

  • Mags Giantsbabe:
And I have a feeling Ghost will pop up when we least expect him to, probably (hopefully) in relation to Jon’s warging capabilities. Maybe we’ll see some kind of perspective of something walking in the snow / looking up at mammoths and see it from that thing’s perspective and then realize it’s Jon/ Ghost. I liked that Ghost was never there to help Jon fight Quorin.

Ghost’s presence would have been awkward during the fight, esp for Jon, but
the Direwolf’s presence was also painfully absent during the Night’s Watch
trekking Northward too. It’s no bigge, but I wish it was Ghost that discovered
the Obsidian Dragon Glass ( instead of Samwell ).

  • Arkash:
    Arkash,

I love Stannis and I love Stephen Dillane as Stannis !

My fear is that Mance is gonna be another grim King, never smiling, cold, distant and stuff… whereas he should be a smiling bard, sympathic and charismatic.

Thank you, Tyrion Pimpslap for speaking my mind ! :)

Yes, and can he Sing ? :D

  • WildSeed,

Yes, Wildwoman, we are up to the top of our Weirwoods in snow, and I don’t mean the direwolf! :) Waiting for WW to show up any day now.

  • Damn, they look cold!

Wasn’t Dominic West too pretty to be Mance? Would Wildlings and giants take orders from a pretty boy?

  • spacechampion,

Yeah, but — in a situation not unlike Draco Malfoy’s actor — Gleeson’s gonna be Joffrey for the rest of his life. Seriously. We’ll all be old farts and if we see him in some sitcom or another as a grumpy old British grampa when he’s 75 or something, we’ll still say “Ah! There’s the douchey king from GoT!”

  • Non withstanding, I hope Jack Gleeson gets some form of award recognition before he bows out. Tom Felton wasn’t too Malfoy-ish in Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Radcliffe is working his little but off on stage and in upcoming films to prove otherwise. He might still have a chance. But taking time off from the industry when you’re young to go study something and you didn’t study drama is always a good thing. Maybe it gives perspective. Natalie Portman and Emma Watson did that.

  • In honor of their second year of filming in Iceland, we really need at least one of the upcoming trailers to feature a Sigur Ros track. Or Bjork. Or, praise R’hllor, a colloboration of the two.

  • the goat,

I’m quite indignant that there is no Bjork . She could handle pretty much
any genre put before her, even music from the Frostfangs. She’s my
    snow queen, for certain :D

  • Or Of Monsters and Men. The first few lines of Your bones remind me so much of the Wildlings:

In the Spring we made our poem
Out of feathers out of bones
We set fire to our homes
Walking back foot in the snow

    Distant rythm of the drum
As we drifted towards the storm
Baby a lion lost his teeth
Now they’re swimming in the sea.
