The newest teaser for Game of Thrones features a three-eyed raven and a familiar, haunting song.
Ours is the Fury: It’s a great, albeit brief, teaser bringing us from our world back to Westeros. We should be getting a more substantial preview soon, with the Invitation to the Set video on January 21st.

Definitely not their best, but showcasing the three eyed crow gives me hope that they’re really going to get in to the northern mythology and such.

Pretty horrible teaser, but it does have The Rains of Castamere with a hint of drums in it so that made it slightly better!!

That was strange. It would have been better if the 3 eyed crow was flying around Westeros. I love that they are focusing on the ‘Reynes of Castamere’ though. They really seem to be holding back the footage for season 3. Hopefully that means they are hard at work at getting the best possible end product.

It’s literally a teaser. It’s not meant to be a preview. Equivalent to last year’s where we had the stock footage of dark forests and the Stannis voiceover, I’d say.

I take it as being this year “Cold winds are rising”… Good, now that this is done we can expect a real trailer…
Otherwise, this is quite a daring trailer, and I must admit I appreciate the dare… it is unusual, weird and quite experimental and I hail that. Even if the rendition and CGI is damn ugly and atrocious.
And did someone get what was in the reflect of the water when the crow flew over it ?
And yes, the Rains are here… I guess they will definitly put them sometimes during the season and remind us that it is a “Lannister song”.

I feel like they’re going to soft peddle any actual footage and try not to start the buzz too early. I’ve been thinking about how impossible it’ll be to actually keep the RW a secret for 9 episodes. I just worry it’ll get into the public and people will be expecting it.
AndrewQuote Reply
I liked it. Not sure the music fitted the visuals, but seeing as I love Rains I’m glad they used it.
MachaQuote Reply
In another way, it’s quite creative. Not too much information, just the three-eyed raven and a special song. It’s a start of really getting “Rains” into people’s heads. So that when it starts playing at a certain wedding, we’re going to really deeply know exactly what it is.
Cary StormQuote Reply
It’s near impossible to avoid spoilers in forums, youtube or facebook pages, so a lot of people will be expecting it from day one I’m afraid.

Not sure what to make of this. Daring in that merging Westeros and our world crosses such a distinct line, when for me GOT exists in a totally separate dimension. I do like hearing the R of C song.
Also reminds me of the season 3 trailer for HBO’s Six Feet Under. It didn’t have any clips from the show, but instead had the characters (and the raven) on top of skyscrapers. It was all visual metaphor.

I like it. Though clearly part of the message is “stay patient, folks, we’re still in post production.”

If you’re looking for a year to year comparison of when to expect teasers/trailers, last year:
The “Cold Winds are Rising” teaser (also with no footage) came out in the middle of December.
The first actual trailer with footage, the “You Win or You Die” one was released right at the end of January. Then there was another one a week later. Then the final trailer “Seven Devils” (with the Florence and the Machine song) wasn’t released until March.
So, aside from this teaser being released a little later than last years, we’re probably on track to see the first real one in about 2-3 weeks.
Also: as an FYI, teasers almost never include actual shot footage so anyone expecting to see some should have tempered their expectations. The trailer (which will have tons of footage) isn’t expected for a little while longer.
King TommenQuote Reply
Yep. It seems their behind schedule or their withholding footage to prevent spoilers (yeah right!) It’s going to be a weak promotional season methinks.

Me, I liked it, after some initial confusion. I think it’s the world itself that draws people in more than specific characters or aspects of the plot, so I liked that emphasis.
And the 3-eyed raven adds a nice touch of creepy/weird to make newbies go “Huh?”

It absolutely worked for me after I thought about it for a few seconds. As has been said, a teaser is just that…something to put G0T into your head and naught more. A way to remind non-G0T fanatics that “Oh yeah, I’d forgotten about that.”
I, too, am afraid that far too many non-book-readers will be spoiled for the RW, but in a way I think that’s not necessarily a BadThing™. If everybody is so focused on episode 9′s horrorshow, then all the other WHAM moments from the first half of ASoS may slip under their radar and ultimately be even more surprising than that one scene.

Winter Is Coming,
That cold winds trailer was worlds better than this one. It does seem like they are slow playing the promos this year, kind of stinks but I’m okay with that. Felt compelled to put pen to paper, or finger to button and just add that I too found this a jarring removal from a carefully constructed fantasy world into drab familiar cities with a badly cgi’d crow flying around.
The mood that the Stannis intro had was much more intoxicating. This one just made me want to be intoxicated. Beside the song, which i can listen to on youtube (even a version with rain playing over it) it was nothing much at all. Play it on mute and see if you could guess what the hell is happening. Also the shot of the actual three eyed crow from season 1 was cheaper and nastier than a winesink whore. They couldn’t take the time to even remove the background to match the gray sky?

Listen fellow Throners,
It is very obvious that HBO threw this “teaser” together very quickly and put very little resources into it.
It isn’t meant to be a jaw dropping teaser, its a rag-tag teaser thrown together quickly, for us, the fans.
There is no need to seethe with hatred and dismay over this teaser, be thankful we have anything at all.
I also got all excited and watched it and was disappointed, then I thought about what it was and watched it again and liked it.
It’s just HBO telling people GoT will be entering their living room soon yet again. That is all this is.
The fantasy world of Westeros will enter the living rooms of this modern world on March 31st, 2013… Get it?
So take it for what its worth and be happy they gave us this as we wait for the real trailers to come.

I think it would have been much more effective to go with Grey Wind, over the 3 eye crow, at this point in the series. Grey Wind in a particular setting ( in woods…running or being chased) with the song would have been a much better tease. It wouldn’t have gave anything away…those that haven’t read the books, or have had it spoiled at this point, don’t know the significance of the song. Effective “tease” without any new footage.
ScottQuote Reply
jkb,
Definitions do matter.
People use various similar words to mean the same thing, but each does mean something slighly ddifferent. As I ee it….
- A tease has no footage and is simply meant as a reminder of an event. In this case a new season is starting soon.
- A trailer usually has footage from multiple episodes and highlights the new season as a hole and what is to come.
- An episode preview has footage only from one episode and highlights what is to come in that episde.
A promo is the vague term for any of the above, also including interviews and behind-the-scenes looks..
There was a reason it was properly called a tease.
Compare it to the ravens from Season 1, or the ring of fire from Season 2. This had much more put into it and was longer. It was a much higher quality production.
Comparing it to a trailer with footage and voiceovers with lines from the season is just not fair. Whether you like it is entirely up to you of course, but judge it by what it was meant to be and compare it to other teases and not full on trailers.

Well said, this is just a teaser that is artfully stating;
“The fantasy world of Westeros is entering our modern world, yet again, on March 31st, 2013″
That is the only purpose of this teaser. Putting the date out there. I am sure we will get a trailer soon, that “Seven Devils” trailer last year was amazing. I bet you they will top that one also. Just give them a few more weeks.
GoT is an epic, this isn’t a show like ‘Homeland’ where they have the advantage of it being shot in the real world. Lots of CGI and editing needs to be done before the footage is ready. But I promise you it will be worth the wait.
Epics cost time and money, the money part is all spent and done…
Now we are going through the “time” aspect.

I don’t like the whole “They don’t owe us anything, we should be happy we atleast got this teaser, it’s better than nothing at all” argument. Well they do owe us something, we buy the $20 books, we pay $15 per month HBO, we buy the $60 blue-rays. Plus whatever other merchandise on top of that. We tell all our friends to watch it. I would much prefer no teaser at all, over that aborotion of a teaser we just witnessed. I don’t care if the first tease is Feb 11th … Release it when its ready, and when its the quality we’re accustomed to. What’s next? Iron Throne Pale Ale tastes just like Keystone Light?

My guess is that HBO thought that they should bring a real world element in for this teaser, due to the nature of the two programs premiering on Sunday. Shows like Girls & Enlightened don’t traditionally share the same fan base* as a show like Game of Thrones, so seeing the swords and men in armor riding horses might be less appealing to that particular subset of HBO viewers than what they put out with this teaser.
Either way, it was sub-par. I agree with the poster above who said they’d rather have gotten nothing at all. Ideally, they should have just aired a very well-edited and scored promo clip featuring footage from seasons one and two, if they weren’t interested in showing any footage from season three.
* I’m a 28 year-old male who watches both Girls and Enlightened, I’m not trying to pass any judgement or make any kind of sexist remark here. Granted, I watch basically everything HBO produces, and I’m sure there are many other subscribers who do the same.

The Rains of Castamere is the voiceover. Outside of there sometimes being a cool voiceover, usually there is even less video than this in a teaser. Like they could’ve spent 20 seconds zooming in on the words “Game of Thrones” and another 20 on “3-31-13″. Admittedly I’m letdown there’s no full trailer this weekend, but once you accept it’s a teaser, who cares between x teaser and y teaser.

Maybe they are trying to imitate ABC’s “Once Upon A Time” – that series that has fairy-tale characters that live in the modern-day world!
I thought the same thing! I knew that was the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris (complete with gargoyles) but I thought how did I miss that in the books? Saw Venice and Florence and I think I even saw Pittsburgh! Hopefully, potential new viewers will think this is a “teaser” for some other show. I send friends and family (who don’t watch the show yet) the unbelievably great fan-made videos on youtube – which put this mess to shame.

Heh, the outrage in this thread is pretty funny, but I can understand it since we fans have gotten almost nothing trailer or behind the scenes related, and the third season premiers in about ten weeks. So the widespread disappointment doesnt surpise me, but i still find it a bit silly :)

your first two points are the parts i have the least issue with. they could’ve just played the song with clips of a field, castle, forest, etc. while it was raining, and been better off imo. even a few other old clips just of the characters. this one really did nothing for me other than the song, the visual needed something else.

This is something that could have aired in November. It has nothing from season 3 in it. Here is the teaser from season 2 : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ucOW5xGGoc Are you really going to tell me the season 3 one is better? BTW, last year’s ‘Cold Winds Are Rising’ teaser aired in December. And this season 1 teaser was great as well: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xVytEgSO0wQ Most of the ‘outrage’ is facetious, at least from me, but this was a pretty worthless teaser, especially at this point in the year.

I liked it, I thought it was a real interesting idea and they executed it well, I am however, glad, that people are raging over it because it is quite entertaining. Considering the vast media collection we have to feed our GoT appetites, this little number is quite incidental. But it struck a chord with me.
The World of Ice and Fire, or rather its AU, has become a constant in my quiet life. If I’m not accessing that world through my household portals, i.e. my recorded series, the DVDs, or the books (I’m currently on my 5th read of all 5), then somewhere in the back of my brain I know that at any other time my favorite Westerosi are savagely beating one another to bloody pulps, pompously denying the existence of dragons, worrying about winter coming, or kvetching about the lack of feminine convenience products. Okay, that last part’s only in my head.
But this “tease” hit a chord with me. It’s the meshing of universes part. I find it almost jarring to think that P. Dinklage and the others are contending with the same modern day annoyances that I experience. All those folks – they exist on a separate plain. Their earth is meaner, grittier, more magical and infinitely more interesting.
(I’m sure I’m alone in this nonsense. Yes, I know. I need a life. I knead a life.)
This teaser is a teeny reminder of wonders to come. Very teeny.

I was O.K with the trailer because it has some very nice visuals and features that song about that lord. However, the initial reaction to the trailer was really confused – “wait, why does this building look like a church? and that gargoyle? wait a SKYSCRAPER? are we in the real world? oh, I get it, it’s ‘returning to our world’ with a new season. say what?”.
I got used to the idea after a couple of minutes but I can only imagine how jarring and confusing this would be to a non book-reader. I’m expecting to exaplain the fine points of this trailer (“No, characters from Westeros are not going to go through a dimensional gate into our world this season…”) to my friends and family quite a lot in the next week. Ah well, it’s an excuse to talk about GoT, how am I to complain.

Sure guys you know the drill by now. Can’t say anything about the shoot. Suffice to say it will deliver.
Here’s a bit of useless/harmless trivia – when David Nutter was directing it he usually ended up covered in candle wax, as did most of the crew!
One of my proudest moments as an extra was when we had finished on the shoot, all the principal actors, the crew, the director and David Benioff gave us a huge round of applause and thanked us for our hard work. It was a bittersweet moment as we knew we were done on that incredible scene. I’ll take that to my grave. Can’t wait to see it on screen.

This tease, too, seems more geared towards fans whose threshold for involvement in Game of Thrones is much closer to the level of, “oooh, The National! And a weird bird. Oh, yeah, I guess the show is coming back in March. Neat.” A shame we can’t have a substancial trailer sooner, but it’ll just make the full trailer that much more exciting in a month or so.

I can’t see why we should be “thankful” for anything, when they’re not doing us any favors here since HBO is not for free. And believe me when I tell you that there’s many folk who subscribe to HBO only because of this show.
So while they’re certainly under no obligation to come out with any trailers (be them teasers or otherwise), if they’re gonna do it, then they can and should do much better than this.

I think the lack of promotional content is because HBO isn’t throwing as much money at it this time around and are using it for more useful purposes, for example more work on VFX. I expect trailers to come out but not until mid february and when they do come out it wont be as often as last year.

Heh, you see the number of comments, right? This isn’t one person ranting for ages about how this teaser is going to sink the season. In general, it’s quite a large number of underwhelmed people writing a sentence or two, or maybe a few paragraphs in the odd case. Doesn’t exactly take a lot of time to fire off an internet comment, either.
So from what I can tell, you’re as guilty of hyperbole as the worst complainers here.
ZackQuote Reply
It really is a family atmosphere as we’ve all been working on this show (and others) for a few years so we know each other pretty well. This round of applause was very unexpected though as we normally just wrap and that’s it. I think the crew wanted to acknowledge the effort that was put into the scene. We worked our asses off!
RimshotQuote Reply
Zack,
Let’s call it a clash of cultures. I have not owned a TV in the last fifteen years, and I do not know how to drive a car, yet I like the intrusion of the raven into our world.
On the other hand, some people here who have not seen a forest or a medieval city in a long time and who practically live through their TV screens protest about how they want to keep fantasy and reality strictly separated, and act as if the teaser were betrayal or a threat to their construction of reality. A bit absurd, isn’t it?
I don’t think I erred on the side of a hyperbole, it’s a fact that people who watch a lot of TV tend to get heated up about ridiculously trivial matters. Let’s consider Wilko’s terminal cancer — surely a bigger reason to be upset and grieved than a teaser….

That is an absolutely awful teaser on so many levels. I cannot believe HBO are releasing this. GoT is famous for it’s production value and the first teaser they release for their new season has absolutely NONE!
The VFX are awful – just awful. Maybe they will argue it is “stylized” but it looks like a school project.
And also the whole concept of the teaser – “Their world returns to ours” – is this a show about parallel worlds whereby we can step through a portal and be transported to the magical land of westeros?? No. There is no link whatsoever between the two worlds so what exactly are they trying to do?
And they’ve devalued a song that was perfect in Blackwater by just chucking it into this mess for the hell of it.
If I had never seen GoT and I saw this I would think this is a show with the production value of Stargate or something along those lines.. if even that!
If HBO air that on tv heads should roll Ilyn Payne style!

I am quite pleased with how I look in these clips – in fine form, if I do say so myself. I like the premise behind the trailer just thought it was sloppily executed. Oh well it doesn’t change how I feel about the show. HBO is remiss in the marketing department for season 3 for some reason. It could be that their scrambling to get the reshoots finished. Perhaps they rushed season 2′s production in interest of making HBO’s promotional schedule. If perfecting the finished version of the show is going to cost us a weak promotional season than so be it.

Joshua Taylor,
Yeah, it sucks but it’s not a statement on the quality of the season. Marketers aren’t the showrunners, generally speaking.
I think the essence of my dislike of it is just that it seems so utterly generic. It could have been done entirely after season 2 had completed, prior to any filming or production of any kind on season 3. Could have been fan made. It hardly requires any knowledge of the book the season is based on. In some situations, that’s fine I guess, but we had mostly been expecting at least a taste of the season, via a new piece of footage or dialogue.
ZackQuote Reply
I can see how it was supposed to be a good idea, but unfortunately like most of people here have said, it just didn’t work. Even without any real footage about season 3 it could have worked, but it just didn’t. No ups and no downs, no climax, no narration, nothing to grasp and nothing that grasped.
Maybe something happened and they weren’t able to fully divert their attention to the teaser. Maybe it was just a fast backup that had to be done. Who knows… maybe someone from inside can ask?
Oh well. At least the music was good.
