Season three is still a few months away, but that doesn’t mean we can’t look ahead to season four. By this summer, we will be knee deep in casting rumors, but before we get to that we like to do a little fancasting. In this thread, we’ll open up the discussion to any and every role that we think will need to be cast in season four. Later, we will take some of the most popular fan suggestions for the big roles and analyze them individually.
Here is a list of notable roles that will likely need to be cast for season four. You are not limited to this list, of course, so if you have the perfect actor in mind for a role not on here, feel free to share it in the comments.
Aeron Greyjoy aka Damphair
Euron Greyjoy
Victarion Greyjoy
Oberyn Martell aka The Red Viper
Ellaria Sand
Mace Tyrell
Randyll Tarly
Taena Merryweather
Strong Belwas
Brown Ben Plumm
Dareon
The Kindly Man
The Waif
Winter Is Coming: Not as big a list this season as the past few seasons. And this is even an expanded list as I’ve included characters that don’t appear until A Feast for Crows. I’m assuming that they will include some of the early events of Feast in season four, as there just isn’t enough material in the latter half of Storm to make up a full season. So I’ve included characters like the Greyjoys and those from the House of Black and White on here. So who would you like to see playing these roles?

Alexander Siddig is my top choice for Oberyn Martell. His agent, when asked, said she was ‘aware of the role’.

Oded Fehr (of Mummy fame) for the red viper, or maybe Naveen Andrews (Sayid from Lost).
Viggo Mortensen for Euron. Although he’s a big name, I don’t think it’s that impossible.
I’d be happy with Karl Urban for Victarion, but I suppose he’s a bit too much of a long shot now because of Dredd, so I’ll second Ray Stevenson.

As much as I like Strong Belwas, I kinda think if they haven’t introduced him by s3 that he won’t be in at all – what role does he really serve(besides a little comic relief) after introducing us to Whitebeard?
And I’ve always pictured the Red Viper as Naveen Andrews, he would be great.

The Dorne casting decisions should prove to be very interesting. I’m hoping they turn to India and maybe the Middle East in terms of acting talent, that should certainly make the cast a great mix of Asian, European and American talent.
The diversity in terms of actor/actress nationalities will be most interesting to see by next year, and could help actors from those parts of the world get great recognition in the West.

I know he might not be as physically imposing as one might hope, but I think James Callis could pull off the rather scary psychological side of Euron. Viggo Mortensen would also be awesome.

I’m not ever any good with thinking up casting ideas, but in regards to the characters mentioned:
Ellaria Sand – I really, really don’t want her to be cut, because she’s one of my favourite minor characters, but I think she might be. I think they will definitely introduce Arianne alongisde Oberyn in S4, so to save introducing too many characters Ellaria may take a back seat.
Randyll Tarly – Doubt we’ll see him until S5, if at all.
Strong Belwas – Hasn’t it already been confirmed that he’s been fully cut?
Dareon – I think one of the NW brothers we’ve already been introduced to, e.g. Grenn or Pyp, will take his place in this plot, to save introducing an extra character.
The Waif – Will be cut IMO.

I’d really like to see them take the extra time they have next season to tell the story of Robert’s Rebellion. So far, the events of 13 (17) years ago have not been super central to the story, but that’s about to change with young griff just around the corner. Would also be nice to see what happens to Elia rather than just hearing the Red Viper talk about it.
If that’s the case we can hope for:
Rhaegar
Lyanna
Elia
Aerys
Brandon
Lord Rickard
And young versions of Jaime, Ned, Robert, Tywin, Gregor
Maybes would include:
Ashara and Arthur Dayne
Jon Connington
Seeing Jaime kill Aerys is too central an image to the series to no show visually at some point. And with season IV being the first time we don’t have a ton of new characters to introduce, it’s just too perfect.
Book III ends on too amazing a note for most of the characters. going too far into Book IV would rob the season of some of its narrative umph. Of the characters listed above, the only one essential to the plot of the later third of SoS is the Red Viper.
I know I’m right about this. Don’t let me down D&D
As for the cast… I’m drawing a total blank
Brad VillaneQuote Reply
I don’t think so. I don’t think they will want to introduce another location next season, so focusing on the Iron Islands intrigue makes sense. Also, we know that the Iron Islands stuff happens concurrently with many of the latter events of Storm, whereas the Dorne stuff can’t happen until after Gregor’s “death”. I’m guessing that will take place in a later episode, which would mean there wouldn’t be much time to introduce Dorne and all its characters. I think saving it for season five makes the most sense.

HBO has to get Ray Stevenson for Victarion, the fans want him and GRRM loved Rome. On IMDB his schedule is curently clear. In fact he just finished working with Alan Taylor on Thor 2.
For Euron the actors I choose all worked for HBO at some point. They are all on tv shows and some are doing films also currently. Dominic West seems the easy choice since he was already contacted to play Mance but turned it down because he didn’t want to be in Iceland for a long period of time since his family is in England. But he seemed to almost regret his decision when he found out about the popularity of GOT from his nephew. Euron scenes would most likely be filmed in N. Ireland a short trip from London, so call him up again David and Dan.

I’m gonna second that Dorne should be represented by more Middle-Eastern types. I mean it IS in the south where it’s hot, so skin tones would naturally be darker. It also gives them the opportunity to bring in some terrific talent!

Brad Villane, I know a lot of people are hoping for some sort of prequel series, but it’s never going to happen. George has intentionally left a lot of the details of that time period vague and if you film it you won’t be able to do that, which could spoil the surprises of later reveals in the books and the show. Also, it would be super expensive and wouldn’t have much of a benefit outside of fan service.

Aeron Greyjoy (Damphair) was already in season 2. He met Theon when he returned to Pyke, made him kneel in the mud and be “baptized” for the Drowned God, and led him to the castle. Will that actor not re-appear? Or are they recasting him? Or am I completely thinking of the book – did that not happen on the show? I have a strong visual image of Damphair, but maybe it’s my imagination.
FionaQuote Reply
Fiona, you are right, that did happen in the show. But the writers specifically stated that that was not Aeron, just an unnamed priest of the Drowned God. Reason being, they wanted to leave the role open so they could cast it at a later date.
Winter Is ComingQuote Reply
I tend to agree that they’ll hold off on the flashbacks, if they ever do any at all. The only one I could theoretically see fitting in Season 3/4 would be Jaime and Aerys, since you would just use the existing throne room set and you’d only need one extra actor. I still don’t think they’ll do that, though.

David O’Hara would be perfect for Victarion or Tarly. He needs to be in this series, was outstanding in The Tudors.

Regarding flashbacks, I can’t imagine the show would change format after two seasons (actually 3, because there is nothing to suggest casting or filming for the upcoming season including flashbacks). The narrative structure of the show is already established, and it does not include flashbacks.

A few quick thoughts.
On Oberyn Martell:
I can see how the entire Dornish stuff could be left for Season 5 – save of course for Oberyn Martell, as he actually comes to King’s Landing. The belief many have about this group having a more Middle Eastern or Indian type of markings makes sense, and I tend to also support the idea of Alexander Siddig as Oberyn Martell, though one could go slightly younger with the part by using Saïd Taghmaoui - who many of you may know as the soldier who talks with Mark Walhberg in “Three Kings” and was also in “Hideous Kinky.” He’s French/Moroccan, and his slight build and his age (he’s 40) would work quite well as a man dancing around the enormous size that is Gregor Clegane. He also appears to be someone with a wild sort of streak in him, too.
As for the Greyjoys — some of the casting has to be done with those in mind for what we see already, that is, you’ve got 3 brothers who are going to look similar to Patrick Malahide in some way, but just varying ages, with Victarion the eldest, followed by Euron (Crow’s Eye) and the Damphair.
Alfie Allen is a feral looking man himself, particularly in the second season, and Malahide has a gaunt, hungry look about him also. It’s also hard to decide which of the three of these are the meatiest roles – they’re almost equal in their importance, though Victarion’s invasion of the Shield Islands comes later and may be too extraneous to really get a sense of on a TV show and therefore truncated, though his pursuit of Danys is going to be eventually important.
Euron is the flashiest in terms of appearance (eyepatches will do that) and the Damphair’s religious nature makes him interesting, too, but then he disappears after that. So figure his character is the 0ne more likely to get a lesser light in terms of who is cast.
You’d also want actors with a more greyish pallor about them (like Malahide) – given they’re from the “Iron” islands, given the casting of Dagmer Cleftjaw with his coloring too. Mads Mikkelsen is a nice choice and given his role in “Casino Royale” you can easily see him don an eyepatch. He’s 20 years younger than Malahide, but that’s not a problem.
So that leaves Victarion, who comes across as tougher, older, and harsher, bigger than Mikkelsen, more sinewy than the likes of Balon. He’s going to be a sea warrior for his voyage (picking up Moqorro, killing his maester) and as such the kind of role you’d like to see an actor who can chew on the dialogue a bit. And no, I do not see Viggo Mortensen, an established movie star, coming into this role. He’s too big for this part, and too sympathetic looking; the Greyjoys are a collection of people hewn from stone, and Mortensen, even in movies like Eastern Promises, comes across as a man with empathy.
Paul McGann, who appears on Luther, has the right sort of look and is about the right age, Mark Strong is a popular name on this site for any random role people can think of, so hell, throw him into the mix, too.
Another possibility – Ted Rooney, who played the dour John McGarrigle on Boardwalk Empire. He’s very tall, gaunt, with a sour demeanor. He’s actually from Oregon, but given his solid Irish accent on Boardwalk, he’d probably be able to handle a more British sound for one of the Iron Islanders. The only question is whether he’s too old – his character on Boardwalk is a man in his 60s, but his promotional pics show him to be younger. He’d probably work just fine slotted in between an older 40s man like Euron and the mid-60s Balon.
As for the Kindly Man, the first thing I can think of is “skeletal,” and for that, I look to Richard O’Brien, of course better known as “Riff Raff” from The Rocky Horror Picture Show. That’ll never happen, but one can dream; he was awesome in “Dark City” as that wraith hissing “Miiissssster Murrrrrdock” at Rufus Sewell.

McKidd is a great actor, but he doesn’t suit Euron at all.
Euron and Oberyn are the main uncast chances to get relative “name” actors on the show ever again; they’re the only roles that are both sizeable and flashy. Oberyn in particular is likely a commitment to large roles in only a few episodes.
For Euron, James Purefoy really seems the ideal; I wonder if he’s only on The Following for one season as he seems to be the villain Kevin Bacon is tracking. Dominic West and James Callis and Mads Mikkelsen would nail it too. I love Viggo but he seems a little off too. To offer my own suggestions, David Wenham or Paddy Considine could pull it off.
With Oberyn they could go in a few directions. I like Naveen Andrews and Alexander Siddig and Oded Fehr.
Victarion: Ray Stevenson fits it, but it might be too small a role. Titus Welliver could do it.
Aeron: I like the idea of Peter Mullan.
Ellaria: I doubt she’ll be in it.
The Kindly Man: Nicholas Woodeson from Rome seems suitable.

I think we need Oded Fehr for Oberyn Martell, or Naveen Andrews if Oded is looks a bit too old for the Viper (I haven’t seen any properly recent pictures of him lately)
We also need Satin – the boy from Oldtown who gets sent to the Night’s Watch and defends the Wall at Jon’s side from the wildling attack and is raised to Jon’s steward when he becomes Lord Commander. He’s one of my favourite small characters. I’ve always imagined him looking a bit like a young Brian Molko, only golden skinned. Very dainty and pretty. Can’t quite decide who would suit playing him though.

Winter Is Coming,
I don’t see what would be so expensive about including flashbacks in the show. The throne room is built. Harrenhal is built. We know plenty about what happens in both of those places to tell the stories that are relevant up to this point. And I could not disagree more that showing it would just be a fan service. TV is a visual medium. Of course we could have several lengthy dialogue scenes. “Gregor raped and killed Elia” Gregor killed little Aegon and Rheanys” “Lyanna absconded with Rhaegar” “Aerys cooked Rickard and Brandon in their armor” etc. These events are very important to the story and our characters, but if we’re just hearing about them in conversations with our characters, they’re going to have very little impact. If we actually see Elia get raped and killed, the audience is going to be much more attached to the outcome of the Viper vs. the Mountain. Also, George has given up many of his secrets to D&D and they’ve said they see the show henceforth as an adaptation of the entire saga. I wouldn’t be surprised if we do get a few details from the show before they ever show up in the books.

Iron Islands plot is 100% in S4 because it happens at the same time with Asos. Plus they can’t let Yara(Asha) out for more than 1 season. Some people might forget. Plus as Cat and Robb are out, these ones can take their place:
- Victarion – Ray Stevenson
- Euron – Mads Mikkelsen
Oberyn Martell will arrive in KL with Arianne. (Ellaria sadly will be cut, or will be a non-speaking role). Arianne will be featured, so that she can go back to Dorne in S5, thus creating a link between regions, and seasons.
- Oberyn – Cliff Simon (he has witty eyes) – regular (as Joffrey will be out soon!)
-Arianne – I want here a surprise! – recurring
Personally I would have preffered to see Ciaran Hinds as Mace Tyrell – he would have played him SPLENDID – playing a fool of a man, but he is Mance… close enough(name-wise).
As Randyl Tarly – Peter Mullan!
Taena I think was cast in S3 as Mirelle, or something…
Season 4 should be a season of character breathing! S3 brings a LOT of new face and they need development, so more than this characters, I don’t think they will add.

About the Greyjoy Storyline during the S4 :
After the S3, we need to introduce the kingsmoot. We know Asha/Yara already. I’m sure that she will come back and ask herself to the priests (no Aeron particularly, so he does’nt need to be cast as Aeron) to launch the kingsmoot. And then Euron will come back and win the game. I’m not sure we need to have Victarion in the S4 (it’s a better idea to focus on Asha/Yara). We will need a iron fleet captain for the S5 when Euron will try to join Meereen but not before that (and maybe a extra only).
About the Martell Storyline during the S4 :
I think the Martell will come back with Myrcella for the funerals and the wedding of Tommen. We don’t need Doran at this point. Ellaria Sand is not really interesting. I think we will meet Oberyn, one of his bastard girl (but don’t know who), and Arianne & Arys (but not sure, the couple could be on screen only during S5 and not at King’s landing) instead, to introduce Dorne to us. I would like to see the hatred between Tyrell and Martell, it could be a funny time.
I don’t know how to make Mace Tyrell interesting. I’m sure they will wait to introduce us Randyl Tarly (his meeting with Brienne during the S5).
No Taena Merryweather in the S4 (she could be the pawn of somebody during the S5 but not before).
I’m not sure for Strong Belwas : with Meereen confrontation, they can use others warriors characters.
Brown Ben Plumm : will he be merge with Salladhor Saan at the end (S6 maybe) ?
No Dareon (certainly an extra, but for S5)
Arya won’t meet the Kindly Man in the S4, but S5.

Well … As usual, some of the names are too big for their roles, but here’s my shot:
Aeron Greyjoy aka Damphair — Eddie Marsan
Euron Greyjoy — Tony Curran
Victarion Greyjoy — Kevin McKidd
Oberyn Martell aka The Red Viper — Alexander Siddig (don’t really know a lot of foreign actors but this one seems right)
Ellaria Sand — Emmanuelle Chriqui (same as above)
Mace Tyrell — Timothy Spall
Randyll Tarly — Graham McTavish
Taena Merryweather — I think she might get cut. Sadly. Because she’s supposed to be pretty hot … Ros somehow ending in her place is not excluded.
Strong Belwas — Chi McBride
Brown Ben Plumm — Delroy Lindo
Dareon — Someone who can sing and isn’t too old. Pretty much anyone would be alright.
The Kindly Man — Hm … someone with distinctive and charismatic voice … like Bill Nighy, for instance. Anthony Hopkins would be especially awesome in this role, but that’s just me daydreaming.
The Waif — I think pretty much any kid actress (with sufficient skill and talent would do). I wouldn’t even mind if they aged her up (it’s a FM custume anyways).

Well, imo, Mads is one of the most charismatic men in the world and he’s got this kind of beauty, a different beauty than in most standards, but he is, imo, and I’m a man, damn handsome.
Then, to come back on other things… I suggested Til Schweiger for Randyl Tarly, but I think he’s too young… if we could get someone ala Bill Nighy for Tarly, that’d be amazing ! Same for Mace Tyrell, Brendan Gleeson would be perfect, but there is not way Bill Nighy and Brendan Gleeson would get into GoT… they are superstars.

I have a strong feeling that Dareon will be merged into Pyp. In the show we already know he was a singer, so Jon might send him with Sam! Pyp is an already established character. Aeron Greyjoy aka Damphair – I find this character hard to cast, someone like Robert Carlyle would be great but the role probably wouldnt be big enough .http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001015/ so perhaps just get some big hairy guy.
Euron Greyjoy – James Purefoy http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0700856/ just seems to make incredible sense.
Victarion Greyjoy – Ray Stevenson http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0829032/ More Rome Alumni
Oberyn Martell aka The Red Viper – Someone a little Middle-Eastern looking, like Naveen Andrews http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0004710/ Also wouldnt mind someone like Colin Salmon http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0758760/
Ellaria Sand – I dont think she will be in it
Mace Tyrell – Dream casting would be for them to expand him a little, have him perhaps a little more scheming and have Brian Cox play him http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0004051/
Randyll Tarly – Maybe not this season, but Id like it to be Ian McShane in a seasonal cameo sort of role. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0574534/
Taena Merryweather – will probably be in, not 100% sure though
Strong Belwas – doubt we will see him
Brown Ben Plumm – Really hope he is cast wouldnt mind Colin Salmon in this role either
Dareon – will be replaced with Pyp
The Kindly Man – Season 5
The Waif – Season 5
In season 4 I also think we will see the casting of these characters:
Arriane Martell – makes sense to introduce her next to Red Viper so we have a character we are familiar with when we get Dorne in Season 5
A Kettleblack – or two, unless they use someone like Bronn to fill their roles.
Val – (if not already in it)
Lady Distin – to move Reeks storyline along and have something for him to do.
Bowen Marsh – maybe… I hope so, maybe some more NW in minor roles too like Cotter Pyke and Denys Mallister.
A couple of Meereen people – like a leader of the city, the champion and perhaps even Reznak mo Reznak. These will be seen in a prolonged siege of the city in the latter part of Season 4 with Season 5 picking up with the start of Dany in Mereen.

They could go for Spanish actors for the Dornish, as I think Dorne is more analogous to Moorish Spain than to North Africa or the Middle East.
Sergio Castellitto as Oberyn?
Then again, HBO may want to take the opportunity to expand the ethnic origin of the cast, as they’ve done with Xaro and Salla without textual support, and cast actors from Indian or South Asian background. Most actors of Arab descent are virtually indistinguishable from Spanish, American or British, (Vince Vaughn anyone?) so they could also potentially flavor the cast with a couple fairer toned Middle Eastern actors alongside the cheaper British stage and small screen personalities they’ve gone for in the past. How about Omar Sharif as Doran?

Victarion Greyjoy – needs to be a huge, powerful man and Ray Stevenson seems like a perfect choice. I’d love to see Peter Stormare, but I’ve never seen him as a warrior so I’m not sure how would he handle this part. Ron Perlman is a tempting idea, but he might be too American and too busy.
Euron Greyjoy – I think he is one of the most psychotic characters and I’m positive Tim Roth would handle the psychotic side with ease. Robert Carlyle seems to be a great fit while Kim Coates looks exactly how I imagined Euron while reading.
Aeron Greyjoy aka Damphair – I still hope to see Ned Dennehy in GoT. Damphair might be a chance for him.
Oberyn Martell aka The Red Viper – Jimmy Smits is my dream cast, but he’s from Brooklyn and it pretty much kills my dream. Naveen Andrews seems more plausible. He is not a very large man and I think it would make his fight with the Mountain (please, bring back Conan Stevens!) even more entertaining.
Mace Tyrell – I don’t tink it will be a very large part, but I’d love to see Stephen Fry do it.
Randyll Tarly – Peter Mullen seems rough enough.

I disagree that Ellaria Sand is not interesting or useful. She’s a cool character and she has function in being a sounding board for Oberyn and helping with exposition. She may be cut, since they could work around her, but I think it would be better if she were in it.
For the Martells like Oberyn, Doran, and Arianne, etc: based on the descriptions from the books and GRRM’s own comments, casting them with actors of Middle-eastern or south Asian descent would be ideal.

Agree with Ours is the Fury:
Ellaria is a strong, sensible woman and provides a rational voice among the hot-headed Martells.
I would like to see the gang in Dorne introduced in S4, not just Oberyn. I think that the show needs to give us more insight into the motivations of the Martells and their desire for vengeance. I would like to see the conversation between Oberyn and Doran before Oberyn rides off to Westeros. Having said that, I imagine that only Oberyn (and hopefully, Ellaria) will appear in S4.
As far as casting, I would prefer not to see Naveen Andrews as a Martell. I had my fill of him in LOST. Odid Fehr is perfect for Oberyn, the sexiest man in Westeros. I know that there are complaints about Fehr’s acting skills but since Oberyn isn’t around for too long maybe the role wouldn’t be too demanding.
Euron = James Purefoy; he’s got the right mix of danger and charisma.
Victarion = I’ll throw my vote in for Ray Stevenson, too. Maybe it would make me like this character.

My thought on Oded Fehr (6’2″) and Alexander Siddig (6’0″) is that they’re both too tall to play the Red Viper.
The actor they have playing The Mountain right now doesn’t project “Huge” on the screen like Conan Stevens did, even though they might be about the same height. If you cast somebody like Naveen Andrews (5’9″) against The Mountain, it will give a better impression of their size difference without having to blow money on digital effects to enhance the size differences.

I really don’t see why The Kindly Man or The Waif should need to be cast until season 5. And I hope they leave Euron, Victarion and the kingsmoot stuff until season 5. As for the Martells, they might want to cast some of them for reactions to Oberyn’s death. And I think that they will need to cast at least 1 Kettleblack
People keep on saying that they should bring forward some ADwD and AFfC stuff into season 4, and then use seasons 5 and the first half of 6 to cover the two books, but I would be greatly disappointed if they do that. Instead of bringing stuff forward and compressing it, I hope that they bring nothing forward to season 4, and stretch AFfC and ADwD out over seasons 5, 6 and possibly even the first half-two thirds of 7, and use the opportunity to expand on the following storylines:
- Quentyn’s journey to Meereen
- Aegon and Jon Connington’s path to Westeros post Tyrion’s kidnapping, and their campaign in the Stormlands
- The Ironborn invasion
-Rickon’s journey with Osha
- Hardhome and the wildlings post Stannis crushing them
- Stannis between leaving Castle Black and taking Deepwood Motte
- the unrest in the Vale
- and the Dornish uprising
The producers have an opportunity to expand on areas that the books left out, and should take it while they can instead of compressing things and leaving them out. Also, by stretching and expanding, it will give GRRM more time to get ADoS done before they catch up to him (I am confident that he will have TWoW done before they catch up, but if they compress stuff instead of expanding, then they will catch up to him before the last book is done)
anyway, even though it will never happen, am I the only one that wants Morgan Freeman for Brown Ben Plumm?
P.S although I could could see Viggo Mortensen as Euron, I still think that he would have made a much better Mance Rayder (I refuse to accept Cirian Hinds as Mance Rayder, he looks nothing like Mance)

Most of the suggestions for Victarion (e.g. Richard Armitage, Karl Urban, Tim Olyphant, Titus Welliver) are too young looking and/or not big and bruising enough. Paul McGann – the “I” from “Withnail and I” – was suggested by one contributor, but I remember him as being quite small, not what I would call imposing, at all. Ray Stevenson has been getting a lot of love for this part, but though he has the right build, I think he has a quickness and vulnerability to his face that would be misplaced in Victarion, who I see as a more lumbering, brooding kind of Viking. One contributor suggested Lars Mikkelsen, who is thinner than I’d have thought Victarion would be, but big enough and with sufficient acting chops to pull off the role (and has the advantage of being Mads Mikkelsen’s actual brother, the latter being the most commonly suggested actor for Euron that I think is well suited to the part). My other suggestions would be more muscular guys along the lines of Thomas Hayden Church, Adam Baldwin or possibly Bruce Hopkins. Or (maybe a bit less realistically) Mickey Rourke? A lot might depend on the versatility of these guys’ accents.
For Euron, I reckon Mads Mikkelsen, suggested by several contributors, would suit this part really well. I was surprised by the suggestion of James Callis (Gaius Baltar in Battlestar), but having seen a photo of him in full beard (http://www.zimbio.com/pictures/1VaPnFAIFEw/TV+Guide+4th+Annual+Emmy+Party/fNv3p89LTFq/James+Callis) I could see him pulling off Euron, possibly also the Damphair. I don’t have as many suggestions of my own here (possibly because I like the idea of Mads too much) but maybe Danny Huston could pull it off?
Cudos to Khal-A-Bunga for suggesting Cliff Simon as the Red Viper – he looks perfect for the part, as far as my imagination goes.
And Patrick Stewart as the Kindly Man would be just awesome!
But, as spineless and abdicating of responsibility as it may seem, my final vote has to be cast with Nina Gold. She’s way better at this than any of us!

Strong Belwas, Taena, and even the Waif can be cut from the show without making any real difference. Kovarro can take Belwas scenes, Qyburn can take Taena’s, and the Kindly man can take the Waif’s.
Other than that, I love the idea of Patrick Stuart as the Kindly Man. They can probably have any young British musician play Dareon. I can’t think of any other good actors that haven’t already been mentioned.
One thing: I think it is very likely season 4 will start on Dany’s chapters from ADWD, so we may need some ideas for the Shavepate and all the other names we can’t remember or spell correctly.

I am completely baffled by the love for Oded Fehr. Can someone please name one part he played that would warrant him getting the role? I’m honestly interested. I get that he “looks like” Oberyn for a lot of people, but the guy just isn’t that good of an actor, from everything I’ve seen him in (which is a decent amount of his filmography).
Alexander Siddig & Cliff Simon may be tall, but this is filmmaking – movies routinely make Tom Cruise look tall, when the guy is like 5’6 or 5’7. Acting ability and the actors ‘look’ are the only two things that should be taken into consideration for this short (but very memorable) part. I want someone who can kill the role, not someone who could do a decent job (Naveen Andrews and Fehr). I’d rather they get an unknown than cast the latter two, to be honest.
But Simon:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7tsigRm44bA
…and Siddig are the two best candidates in my eyes, from both the acting angle and their general look.
I completely agree with Stevenson as Victarion, as well. I even decided to use that link to e-mail his agent. I think the Iron Islands casting is pivotal to getting the audience (non-readers and some book fans, alike) invested in those characters. A lot of my (myself not included among them) didn’t enjoy many of the scenes with the characters on the Iron Islands, and that’s one thing among many that D&D have an opportunity to “improve” upon in the show.

Ray Stevenson has the perfect body build for Victarion and can play a berserker perfectly, like he did in Rome, but he’s too good looking and too humorous. I don’t know if he could pull Victarion’s darkness and lack of humor. I’ve always pictured his normal expression like Ilyn Payne’s in the show, with that grumpy face. Mads Mikkelsen has that grumpy look, but he’s not bulky enough for Victarion, so I really have no idea who could play him.

Jaqen is Q,
I forgot who, but after my post I saw that someone mentioned that the kingsmoot happens at the same time as the second half of ASoS, so I guess it would make sense for them to bring that forward then. If that is season 4, then it should contain the following:
Kings Landing – first half: lead up to Joffrey’s wedding and the introduction of the Dornishmen, with the wedding itself in the middle of the season. I expect a lot of interactions between Cersei, Jaime, Tywin and Tyrion, as well as some stuff on the tension between the Dornishmen and the Tyrells. second half: the fall out and Tyrion’s trials, ending with Tyrion fleeing the city. The whole season should very much be dominated by Kings Landing and the Night’s Watch. The Wall – start: the battle at Castle Black, and preparations for the siege. middle: the siege itself. last few episodes: the election. Stannis – first few episodes: a strange absence, as I believe that their season 3 storyline will end with them leaving Dragonstone, but no-one saying where they are going. middle: surprise appearance at the Wall. Daenerys – first few episodes: defeat of Yunkai. middle: road to Meereen. 6-8: Capture of Mereen. End: Barristan reveal, exile of Jorah. Ironborn – first episode: Balon’s death. after that: lead up to the kingsmoot, and the kingsmoot itself. Bran – will only appear in a few episodes. one or two scenes in the first half of the season, meeting with Sam at the Nightfort in 5 or 6, then one scene after that later in the season with Coldhands. Sam – first few episodes: fleeing from Craster’s keep and going to the wall. episode 4 or 5: Coldhands. 5 or 6: meeting with Bran. 6 or 7: return to Castle Black. Arya – will probably appear infrequently, and will end with probably end with her approaching Braavos. Theon – Assuming that season 3 is some deception on the part of Ramsay, I expect Theon will have between 3-5 torture/flaying scenes throughout the series, maybe ending with his attempted escape with Kyra. The Vale – maybe 1-3 scenes of the unrest and tension in the Vale in the first half of the season, with the Sansa/Littlefinger/Lysa stuff in the second half. Robb – nothing, just including his name just to be safe, because a non-book reader may draw conclusions from the absence of his name, and I don’t want to indirectly spoil the RW.Extra Stuff – we may get a scene or two with Edmure at the twins, a scene or two of the Blackfish at Riverun, and maybe a Lady Stoneheart Scene. maybe also a Dornish reaction to Oberyn’s death, but I don’t really expect that until the first episode of season 5.
so I think they have plenty of material to fill season 4, without bringing too much in from AFfC, and easily saving enough material for at least 2, if not more seasons based on AFfC and ADwD.

A woman has carefully read all the above comments, and am stunned and amazed that Cas Anvar has not been mentioned for the Red Viper casting. Yes, Oded Fehr looks the part too, but Naveen Andrews? Come on now, he’s not yummy enough IMO. The Red Viper has to have the air of a warrior and a playboy, has to be old enough to have a bunch of young adult daughters from different mothers. And the threatening “I’ll kick your ass in a hearbeat” look about them, and not too puny to take on the Mountain that Rides. So some of the above ideas were yummy enough, but not old enough to play Dad to somebody like Parminder Nagra (for Arianne Martell, of course). Cas Anvar or Oded Fehr, yes to either.
And why not look even further east than that for the Red Viper and posse? There’s a whole continent of ass-kicking warriors who are not only yummy and the imposing, but could probably knock out some of those fight-type scenes before lunch (’cause, like, they’ve been doing them for years). Think Chow Yun Fat, Donnie Yen, Mark Dacascos…all about 6 ft. tall, yummy, warriors, any of them could play the Red Viper and Donnie Yen could choreograph the scene for you too. Don’t know why nobody’s thought of them as part of the Essos mosaic of types, they would bring an exotic difference to Dorne and if you want to see a sword versus staff scene, check this one out (imagine the guy in black in armor and larger, this is in my mind’s eye when I read certain scenes):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eTsKEgUJyUQ
Of course, they’ll be in armor so won’t be flying through the air, but that’s the kind of action that we SHOULD see in certain scenes where the tension should be high. Fast, sharp, medieval, yeaaaaaaaaaaah. And we want the yummy guy to win. Following that train of thought, why not Sammo Hung for Strong Belwas? He’s supposed to be a retired pit-fighter, a guy with some scars but still has the moves. Sammo Hung, veteran of dozens of Hong Kong action movies, and a woman just stumbles on this clip of Sammo versus Donnie Yen in a recent film…tell me this doesn’t say “Strong Belwas”:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rbk9b4oIzZo
Oh yes, and Sammo could choreograph some of those fight bits too, he’s all that and a bag of chips.
For Satin…US figure skater Johnny Weir. Or somebody like him. Perfect. And he does accents.
The idea of siblings playing siblings is appealling re: the Greyjoys and the Mikkelsons, this would be an intriguing casting and they don’t look too far off from the current Greyjoy look. Make it so D&D, it could be a first in series television too, right?
Wouldn’t it be cool if Tom Wlaschiha could play the Kindly Man? You don’t see his face for years anyway.

I am almost sure they will replace Dareon with Pyp, they already gave him Dareons singing talents, + both Pyp and Grenn are not doing much in later books, so if there is something important in store for them in in TWOW or ADOS – this could be done by some new characters, that will be cast by Season 5-6.

I would like to see one of the newcomers cast by Nina Gold in ‘Honour’ recently, Aisha Hart or Caitlin Joseph. Both have a nice ethnic mix that lends itself to the Dornish I think. I also could see Amber Rose Revah as Arianne, but I REALLY like the idea of her as Nymeria down the road!

Sure, they made Gimli and the hobbits look short in the Lord of the Rings movies, but they did that with camera angles, filming the characters separately and CGI, if I recall. And, with Tom Cruise, he is such a heavyweight actor that he can use his “pull” to make sure that the female lead/co-star is on the shorter side, and the bad guys are also not too tall. (Plus, he never comes across as tall on screen, IMHO – just not short as he really is)

To those who don’t think they will have The Kindly Man or The Waif in season four, what exactly do you expect Arya to do next season?
Here is her storyline, post-RW in ASOS:
-Wanders around for a while doing nothing
-Arrives at inn, kills the Tickler (probably Polliver in the show), gets Needle
-Abandons a dying Sandor
-Gives coin to ship captain for passage to Braavos
That’s it. So unless they add a whole bunch of stuff to her story or they reduce Arya’s role to a 2-3 episode appearance next season (not likely considering she is one of the most popular characters on the show), they will have to add some stuff from AFFC.
I don’t think they would need to go too deep into her AFFC storyline just to flesh it out. The nice thing about the voyage is you could leave Arya off-screen for multiple episodes and it wouldn’t feel strange. My proposed breakdown of Arya’s storyline in S4:
Ep. 1: Arya dreams of the RW, but this time it is from Nymeria’s perspective; Arya is coming to grips with losing her mother and brother, Sandor doesn’t seem to care
Ep. 2: Arrive at inn, kill Polliver, get Needle
Ep. 3: Abandons Sandor, arrives at Saltpans and gives the coin to the ship captain
Ep. 7: Arya is on the ship to Braavos, adopts the name ‘Salty’, ship’s crew is wary of her, giving her gifts and teaching her their names, Arya learns a bit of Braavosi
Ep. 10: Arya arrives in Braavos, is taken to the House of Black and White, sees the dead and dying, enters and meets The Waif, eats the worm, The Kindly Man reveals his true face
Still a fairly Arya-light season, but she has a grand total of 7 chapters between the end of S3 and the end of Dance, which will likely be season 6. So some of these seasons will have to be Arya-light. I think adding stuff to her storyline in Braavos will be a lot easier than trying to add stuff to the time between the RW and her leaving for Braavos. So, in short, I think getting her to Braavos by the end of season 4 isn’t rushing things and is really the only way to do it.

loco73,
They will be in the series in some form I’m sure, but none of them should appear in Season 3 or maybe even Season 4 honestly unless they move material forward or add new scene.
From everything hinted at in AFfC and ADwD all 4 could be somewhat (if not very) important players in the future books. I really hope they keep all 4 of the older Sand Snakes and keep them all looking diferently than one another due to their various mothers.
I think having them all be bastards from different women adds so much to their characters, and in particular it adds to th Red Viper’s character. Plus, GRRM does have a thing for bastards in the saga. I would dislike if they made them all from one mother personally….
Khal-A-Bunga,
She may make an interesting Ellaria Sand, but that may be too small a role for her. I think she is too old for any of Oberyn’s daughters other than Obarra and she does not fit that role IMO.
DarquemodeQuote Reply
Darquemode,
I think they’ll be aging Oberyn up, and that his daughters will similarly be aged up. Morena is only 33, anyway, so I can see something similar to Natalie Dormer being cast occurring, no matter who they ultimately decide to go with (as far as the age discrepancy).
And to those saying Stevenson is too charismatic and light to play Victarion – that’s exactly what these Iron Island roles need! They need the kind of actors who can engage an audience, because otherwise people will start to lose interest (like many who’ve read the books have complained about when it comes to some of the story lines in AFfC & ADwD), and that would be the death of the show. So even though Stevenson might not be exactly the Victarion from the novel, he’d be an ideal choice to bring the role to life. It doesn’t HAVE to be him, obviously, but the role certainly shouldn’t be as dour and hard as it is in the books. Also second Purefoy as Euron (with an expanded role), as I have a feeling his show on FOX won’t do too well (based on the TCA press tour reactions, and the fact that it might be a bit violent for the 9:00 P.M. time slot on a broadcast network).
@Tyrion Pimpslap
The casting of Fehr wouldn’t be a detriment in and of itself, but when there are much better people for the role, then yes, it is somewhat of a wasted casting choice (just my opinion). I agree with the poster above who likened his look to that of someone on the cover of a cheesey romance novel – hit the nail on the head.

Agreed on Stevenson. He and Purefoy for years have been my first choices for Victarion and Euron . Victarion can be agruff, devout and a man of few words and still be charismatic. I think Stevenson can be bring all that along with the right physical build for the role.
I haven’t read the recent TCA accounts of The Following, but the majority of the early reports before the 2012 Fall season of TV began were very positive and FOX has put a lot of backing into the series. I would not cancel it just yet….. no matter how much I would like Purefoy as Euron.

victarion greyjoy-i’m think ray stevenson might be good for this one, but if they get Purefoy as well then it would start looking to much like Rome, especially if they want to get McKidd into play Connington (and i really want them to make that casting happen) tbh i’m quite happy for them to go for a lesser known actor on this one, but stevenson is the best suggestion i have heard
aeron greyjoy-John Lynch, or maybe Tony Curran or Eddie Marsan
brown ben plumm- george harris
randyll tarly- agree that graham mactavish would be best for this role but he’ll probably be doing the hobbit so robert glennister http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0322563/
taena merryweather- indira varma(vorenus’ wife in rome)
i dunno about the kindly man or the waif
those are all the castings i think they’ll do out of that list, tbh i think they’ll probably cut ellaria sand and strong belwas and dareon will be left to season 5 if he’s in at all

Winter Is Coming,
They can beef up Arya’s story in Season 4 without introducing Braavos - thay have changed Dannys story a lot last season , Arya spent half season interacting with Tywin – and it was pretty good,,, so I have an alternative to your proposal
Arya – Season 4 – let’s keep in mind that season has just 10 epps, and not all of them have to feature Arya – so there is enough material for 7-8 epps here:
Arya Spends part of the season travelling with Sandor, trying to reach Vale, maybe even clashing with some mountain men…
+ some scenes from book 2 – that were not used in Season 2 – can be reworked (so the events and places witnessed by Arya and Yorrens team will be witnessed by Arya and Sandor)
Eventually thay can settle in peaceful village but spend longer time there – untill being ousted,
all this can contain lots of interaction and friendship/hate realationship between Arya and Sandor… then big clush with bad guys, and in the last epp – Arya takes the ship, says magic word and is last seen sailing to Braavos…”
Season 5 then can be fully dedicated to Aryas adventures in Braavos

Rygar,
I reiterate – Richard Armitage. The actor has acting chops to spare plus more than fulfills your criteria for Euron Greyjoy. See him currently as thunderous Thorin Oakenshield in The Hobbit – in order to understand the powerful presence the actor has onscreen. Then he speaks, and most audience members wonder why they’ve not seen him anywhere before Tolkien’s prequel to LOTR. More than one review has stated Richard Armitage stole the film.

“To those who don’t think they will have The Kindly Man or The Waif in season four, what exactly do you expect Arya to do next season?
Here is her storyline, post-RW in ASOS:
-Wanders around for a while doing nothing
-Arrives at inn, kills the Tickler (probably Polliver in the show), gets Needle
-Abandons a dying Sandor
-Gives coin to ship captain for passage to Braavos…..”
You’re probably right on the money here, with perhaps a few more scenes where Arya sees things in her dreams from Nymeria’s point of view and starts to ask others about what these dreams could mean. She has to hear the word “warg” at some point, and it would probably terrify her, adding to her wish to run and stay away from Westeros for a while.

I am not sure there is a time to introduce Arianne in Season 4 but I’d love if they could bring Darkstar in Oberyn/Ellaria entourage
And start Dorn story in Season 6 by having them bring back to Dorne the body of Oberyn – so we will have alreadyu two familiar faces there . I would have also combined ellaria with some of the sandsnakes making her less peace-oriented :)

Plus you would get an idea of who the Starks and Targaryens were before everything took place

why Cliff Simon for Oberyn Martell:
-He is 50 I know, but Oberyn is like what? 45? is that much of a difference? With a little bit of hair coloring, and make-up, everything is possible! + Peter Dinklage is 42 and he plays a late twenty year old. And he is Great!
-He is tall, but not that tall, he is fit and muscular, he has intelligent eyes, and what a gaze he has….
-He can play a smart, charismatic character. He can play a fighter!
-And he is a great actor! (Oh, and Giancarlo Esposito can play Doran Martell! He is 4 years older than Cliff Simon! This would be Perfection!)
I don’t know, maybe is just me, but he fits completly. He just clicks!

Siddig, Simon, et al are OK, but not menacing enough; has to be Édgar Ramírez (Carlos, Domino, Zero Dark Thirty) – right range of emotion, flair… dude would make a perfect Red Viper. Great actor. If his manager isn’t trying to get him that role he needs a new one…
Also, Conan Stevens is a must – have to get him back for that scene.

It all depends on how much stretching of Storm of Swords is going to go on. I would prefer that they move things along to Braavos by the end of season 4. You’re both right. Archie Panjabi is too old, and too busy. She was born in 72 and at 40 can play 30s. But not 20s. Moot point, as you say. She’s found her niche.
Nina Gold & Company haven’t always been concerned about this age niggle; i.e. Ciaran Hinds. Too long in the tooth for Mance, IMHO. But I must withhold judgment here. He’s a fine actor. I don’t want his age to distract me from his work.
So Monster is his first child? No other whelps? The books raised this riddle and the series exacerbates it. Perhaps all his former mates and spawn died in childbed. Perhaps I have this issue with older men who gather trophy wives.

I think that you get the point. Dorne is not written as Meereen or the slave bay, it reminds me the south of Spain, and their people are not descripted like hindian or pakistani people, but as “Spanish” cause, in comparision with irish and british people, all mediterranian skins are darker and less frikled :P, and being from Barcelona by myself, i have always realised that Tyrells and Martells represent the northern and southern spanish mediaeval kinds of knights and Sirs, and i believe that more “exotic” actors should be left for the Dany arc.

AdrianAegon,
Alot of people have issue with Simon being South African of European heritage, but his parents were Ashkenazim. So in my opinion he has that sufficient MiddleEastern look. Aside from his ethnicity, he certainly has the physical traits of the Red Viper:
“Oberyn has a lined face with thin eyebrows, black “viper” eyes and a sharp nose. His hair is lustrous and black with only a few silver streaks and recedes from his brow into a widow’s peak.” http://www.torrentsland.com/upload/preview/images/cr_actors/1/1/1/500f5bdfaae453617b0dc057f138031b.jpg
His role as Baa-al showed he is capable of playing a charming, lusty and intelligent role, and as an ex-Olympic calibre athlete, he certainly has physical skills and grace to play the part.
I quite like the idea of Cliff Simon as Oberyn although I would not mind seeing someone with a stronger MiddleEastern look like Amir Waked or Navid Negahban either.

Stannis doesn’t have a whole lot of story in the first two thirds of ASoS, but Edric Storm is the focal point of what he does have. If they don’t cast Edric they’d need to either somehow have Gendry get captured by Stannis instead, or completely change that part of the story :\

Regarding the sand snakes, I personally just want them to be crazy diverse visually… From white to black to Polynesian to Asian. Even the ones that won’t become speaking roles in the show later, it’d be cool if at some point we could see them all in a room together, played by ethnically diverse extras. Make it clear the Red Viper got around… the mothers weren’t all Dornish.
Haven’t been any Asians on the show yet! People complain about whitewashing and wanting more “POC” (vague, generic term that it is), but most commenters seem to use that to only mean “brown”. Let’s really break the fantasy mold and get a strong Asian lead character in.
But my guess based on prior casting is that they’ll go for British actors of Indian, Middle Eastern or African descent, a la Missandei and Grey Worm etc (Naveen Andrews as Red Viper anyone?) Which is fine, but I reckon you could be more daring.
Like… if you want to really gets nerds excited… Doran Martell = George Takei. Make the Dornish straight-out East Asian in appearance. Obviously I don’t mean for that to be taken 100% seriously (though it would be Diana Rigg-level of awesome), but you get my drift. Dorne may be inspired by Moorish Spain, but it isn’t an exact replica any more than Braavos is 100% Venice. The main thing is that it’s obviously different from the rest of Westeros.
Although maybe there needs to be some connection with the Volantene Talisa’s appearance, assuming that the Volantenes are also Rhoynars.
Maybe the Red Viper could be Daniel Dae-Kim…
Seriously, I’d totally dig them subverting the dominant fantasy clichés :)

Dorne characters will have to be introduced next season! The Red Viper was Tyrion’s champion after a certain event happens at Joffrey’s and Margaery’s wedding (all the book readers know what I’m talking about). Being that their wedding happens at the end of book 3, we are expected to see scene unfold pretty early in season 4. I think that Ellaria will be cut and replaced by Arianne to prevent introduction of too many new characters. Only reason they brought in the Greyjoys at the season finale is because the viewers are already familiar with those characters and the Theon storyline needed some sort of a conclusion for the season.
ChrisQuote Reply
Mads Mikkelsen as Euron and a slightly more buff Lars Mikkelsen as Victarion. This would be ideal as they already resemble Patrick Malahide slightly in their ghoulish paleness. Also, they are brothers in real life. As for James Purefoy, I don’t know if he would fit the part of Euron as well. Sure, he looks dark and intimidating, but it don’t think he looks very sly or enigmatic.
Damphair should be played by Jonathan Ryan in the series.
Randyll Tarly is a hard one, but i’ll have to go with Mark Strong just because he’s awesome and is good at play strict, harsh characters
Mace Tyrell would be Brendan Gleeson, that’s a given.
Oberyn could be played by a lot of people, so I am really unsure about this one, but perhaps Viggo Mortensen would be fit for this role? I don’t know, but I don’t really know who else I would cast.
