The beginning of 2010 started quietly, but the excitement while waiting for the much hoped-for pickup was definitely growing.
- Many critics discussed the show, again before there had been any definite decision that there would be one. Harry Lloyd continued with the ramping up of expectations as well.
- WiC.net exclusively interviewed Julia Frey, the visual effects producer on the pilot.
- We were also fan-casting Littlefinger back then, and sure enough, the man that finally got the role, Aidan Gillen, was on our list.
- Positive and encouraging signals started trickling in. We learned that HBO would screen the pilot towards the end of the month, and they did. Still, we knew we had to wait until March for a decision. HBO’s head of programming, Michael Lombardo, was very positive about the pilot getting the green light, and revealed himself as a fan. We also heard that HBO was looking to book the Paint Hall studios for five years, which was undoubtedly another good sign.
- In other news, Winter Is Coming evolved that month and moved to the Word Press platform. Just one in a continuous series of improvements, encouraged by a growing readership. Thank you all.

Ah this was getting close to Sourcenator time. Will that be brought up or is it too taboo?

We probably won’t commemorate it :) but it’s free to discuss as any other topic.

Apologies, this is not related to this post but I thought it would be of interest to any GOT fans from Glasgow, or indeed anywhere in Scotland –
http://www.glasgowfilm.org/festival/whats_on/4858_game_of_thrones_screening_and_panel_discussion
The Glasgow Film Festival is screening the Blackwater episode, followed by a Q&A with Peter Dinklage, Lana Headey and Charles Dance. The event is free although tickets can only be collected on the day of the event. Looks like it’ll be a case of getting down there early. I know I will be!!

Actually, on rereading the above link I’m not sure that it actually confirms which members of the cast will be there!! Think Dinklage, Headey and Dance are just noted as the main actors in that episode. Apologies. Looks like we’ll need to wait and see who’s going to be there from the cast. I’ll still be there anyway!

Is Sophie Turner going to be 9 feet tall or what? She looks like she is taller than the hound.

Yes there is the first post from Sourcenator, although he is Michael there!
And lol I was such a little sycophant back then reading my comments, getting excited about blogposts by GRRM. Silly little me.
PS. why doesn’t the twitter log-in show your avatar anymore?

Was he the first poster hit with the ban hammer? He was the first (and still the best IMO) real troll we had around here. I guess a certain E.S. might have something to say about that.

Knurk,
Twitter confirmed to Winter they did something wrong during the last upgrade with the plugg-in (or something).
We have to wait, I guess.
Lol – Sourcenator: I am laughing now – but back then was horrified!!!

Speaking of fan casting. When will we start the next process in analyzing the top choices by fans for the major roles?
The fans have made Ray Stevenson the overwhelming majority choice to portray Victarion. Please start with him he’s such a badass character and his importance is growing with each book.

These blasts from the pasts are really fun. I especially loved the speculation on Littlefinger. Its fun to go back and think what might have been (not that I don’t absolutely love – or love to hate – Aidan Gillan – he’s terrific). Also funny to compare the comments from then to discussions now on speculation AND on waiting for the next book – somethings never change! :-)

Just my 2 cents, I think that “rumor” post should be commemorated. It really got everyone’s blood pressure up and like it or not it’s kind of part of this site’s history. Granted if you do it Sourcenator wins, but at this point does it matter? It’s a real interesting thing to look back on. Just reading through those old comments is awesome.

Can’t remember if this was commented on but: “WiC.net exclusively interviewed Julia Frey, the visual effects producer on the pilot”.
Lol! Julia FREY?!
Wonder what visual effects we are talking here, hehe…

Udi,
Edit:
Ofc this was commented on in the original interview!
Anyway, always nice to see how things were a year, two years ago…
Now waiting for some juicy teaser for S3!

Julia “our own (and only) favorite Frey”, although her name is pronounced quite a bit different then notorious Frey is one of the warmest and most lovely person among all of the crew who has been working on the GOT project.
She was always nice to fans.
I ll alwyas be thankful for her great approach to us, and her profesionnal attitude while in “bussiness”.
On the Sourcenator: that was really horrible back then – but as someone pointed out – an unforgettable moment in WiC history – the guy caused litteraly a mass hysteria. lol

thanks for the clarification!
Sourcenator, I know it hurt WiC’s (and our) pride but thinking back on it it was good for us for keeping our feet on the ground and not thinking this show would automatically be a homerun. Because of him there was more joy when the show did get picked up.

I remember when news of a possible ASOIAF show on HBO started making the rounds, I was one of those guys calling for eternal damnation on the TV execs who would inevitably desecrate my favourite books series. Never been happier to be proven so wrong.

I remember this so well… I was on that guys back the entire time, questioning his every post, until we finally got the news about the series getting greenlighted.
He wasn’t even a good troll. He told us “stuff he knew” that everyone could assume was happening anyway, and his last post about HBO “getting the greenlightnews out before he had the time to post it” + some “news” about casting process now full underway, contracts being signed and so forth, ended in WiC finally telling him “Dude, just stop!” Lol!
Ahh… yes, we can all laugh about it now…

I think he just struck at the right time. Everyone around here was on pins and needles (hitting F5) hoping for word of the green light. He was very cordial despite being attacked so it wasn’t typical troll behavior. I don’t blame anyone for buying in.

I don’t mind us mentioning the Sourcenator thing. It was a pretty big part of the site’s history and was, personally, a good learning experience for me to not take everyone on the internet at face value. And, I believe, this was our only miss in terms of reporting rumors. I think everything else has turned out to be true.
