New “Chaos” preview released

HBO released a new trailer tonight entitled “Chaos,” featuring a voiceover from Aidan Gillen as Littlefinger about the scramble for power, with closeups of some returning favorites.

Ours is the Fury: A nice tease of a preview, though I am impatient for actual scene footage in a trailer. I do love that last little smile from Tyrion, and it’s great to see a variety of characters featured who are often ignored, like Sansa.

  • First! Nice little tease, but yes, a woman would love to see some actual footage soon to hold us over till the end of March. Gods, isn’t Arya starting to look like a teenager? Huzzah for this, thanks for posting!

  • Interesting that they included the Hound. I hope this preview is a nice indication of who is going to play a big part in Season 3, b/c lots of my faves were in it.

  • Nice!

Very reflective of the s02 marketing strategy in terms of peaking HBO subscriber tastes and die-hards like us with a v/o concerned with the conceptual: the nature of power games; the characters featured are also well timed to the words. You can taste Gillen’s relish in the speech. Also, signals a proper trailer on the 24th, perhaps with an equally awesome backing track as “Seven Devils” from last year.

  • Sweet. These last couple months before the season starts are awesome – so many different kinds of news, now the previews are starting….kick ass.

  • Gods, I can’t wait!! So excited!
    LfF’s aaaa!
Great to see they showed Sansa and Sandor! the trailer is going to be epic!

  • It fits nicely with the fan base theory of Littlefinger as The Chaos Spreader (him being responsible with everything which is going wild in Westeros) :-).

But doesn’t answer all the fan theories and question about WHY Littlefinger thrives in chaos ?

  • Cool teaser! Reminds me of the “Iron Throne” teaser from S1. Would have much preferred getting this instead of the Raven teaser a month ago.

  • Tyrion’s sinister smile with Littlefinger’s voice over “The Climb is all there is!” Epic!!!

  • Winter Is Coming:

    absolutely.

really like that Jaime is showing some scars now too…

  • give me close ups of the brilliant cast and a cool voice over over a raven flying through a modern city for some bizarre reason anyday!

  • Blunted:
Jon has his scars in this preview. But that hasn’t happened on the show yet.

I believe he got them from Craster in the TV show.

  • Kell:

Thieves thrive in chaos, they can steal more easily when others are distracted, so that is this woman’s theory on why Littlefinger does what he does…he aspires to steal the whole kit and kaboodle of the realm one bit at a time till he controls it all.

  • Even going in knowing that Sandor will hve a bigger role this year it was so nice to see him as one of the featured characters in the teaser! I felt McCann was under-utilized in the first two seasons…..

Great smirk from Dinklage at the nd! XD

  • Neat! Let’s hope for more little teases like this in the next few weeks if the trailer doesn’t leak sooner than the 24th.

  • Really like the teaser, especially how in some cases the voice over is foreshadowing the destiny of the character which is shown.

  • No Tywin, no Stannis, no Davos, no Balon, no Varys, no Margaery, no Theon, no Asha/Yara, meh.

I understand the absence of the newer season 3 cast but really, this teaser is just so sparse.

  • “the climb is all there is”

    Yeah, in ratings! :)

Good to see the Hound in there.

But where is Strong Belwas, Beric, or Whitebeard???

  • Beautiful teaser HBO. Well done. The ramp up to the big trailer and then the series has begun.

The raven thing was weak though. I admire it’s intention but not the execution.

  • Baramos,

No, but a lot of people speculated that he’d be left out as his fate at the end of Season 2 is up in the air, and HBO would’ve possibly wanted to make his return a surprise. Made sense to me, but I guess not.

  • Mark:
    Mrs. H’ghar,

It will be difficult in future seasons when Maisie is 17,18, or 19 years old for a Season 7. Sophie would be 20, hell there could be a Sansa sex scene.

A woman doesn’t think it will be difficult, just more tricky in the costume department if Arya is to maintain the androgenous role for a bit. But there are many ways to deal with that issue, and we don’t know which direction they’re going in so we’ll have to wait and see. Children will grow, it is known.

  • Soooooo exciting!!!!!! Love Tyrion’s wry little half-smile at the end!

Our boys are looking rough–Jaime and Jon are both sporting some wicked-looking scars.

  • I’m going to call the emperor naked: this is a bad preview. All it consists of are cast members against a black background, previous main cast members so we don’t see anything remotely new.

Moreover, Littlefinger’s speech about chaos doesn’t really make sense out of context. I’m never going to watch this more than the one time I already have.

  • They aren’t going to be able to put *every* character in that people want to see. Come on, guys and gals.

  • cozmeesah,

No, but at least put in some of the newer power players introduced in season 2 instead of the same group of people we’ve seen in the season 1 trailer with minimal changes. Hell, they don’t even have Tywin.

  • Buggerit,

Well, with the exception of the Hound,Joffrey, and Robb, the others are the main POV characters from the books. I thought it was a good teaser, unlike the confusing ‘Three Eyed Raven’ one. Not as good as ‘The Cold Winds Are Rising’, but I doubt that is ever topped.

  • Tyrion Pimpslap,

No Davos though, who had the same number of chapters as Dany and represents Stannis’ faction. But I’m not quite as surprised given the possibility that HBO might want to keep Davos’ survival after Blackwater ambiguous and their apparent lack of attention and care for “Team Dragonstone”. Still, as the last surviving true older member of House Baratheon and a King, Stannis’ absence is rather jarring.

  • I liked it, but then I got to the end and expected Miley Cyrus to go “It’s the cliiiiiimmmmbbb”. I don’t think I was supposed to be laughing.

  • Very nice. Sandor is walking away during the commentary about those who leave the, er climb, so that would make sense to people who have watched the show.

  • The climb is all there is makes for a pretty awesome tagline I think. Good teaser, good voiceover by Gillen. Probably could have included more characters but definitely thought it was cool.

Also Masie looks older, actually older then some of the shots we have seen from actual footage.

  • Well, it was nice.

One more week until the new Behind the scenes-thingy! And I feel the need to be blown away in two weeks…

  • Love this, I like these kinds of trailers a lot as they get me excited without any actual footage. Also that line of dialogue from little finger is amazing.

  • You have to admit those teasers are really experimental and ballsy. Of course not everybody will like them, but they stand out from what we’re used to, claiming a certain “artistic exceptionalism” for the series.

  • denizreyiz:
Is anyone can write the all speech of Littlefinger?

Chaos isn’t a pit. Chaos is a ladder. Many who try to climb it fail, never get to try again. The fall breaks them. Some, given a chance to climb, they cling to the realm, or the gods, or love. Only the ladder is real. The climb is all there is.

  • Mrs. H’ghar: Chaos isn’t a pit. Chaos is a ladder. Many who try to climb it fail, never get to try again. The fall breaks them. Some, if given a chance to climb, they cling to the realm, or the gods, or love only the ladder is real. The climb is all there is.

Thank you so so much :)

  • Grijnwaald: How old is Arya in the books at this time?

She is 10/11 in 300 AL. But I don’t really see the problem of her being a teenage ninja instead of a child ninja. Makes more sense actually.

  • Nezzer: A woman does not simply say “I” 8)

A woman occasionally does say “I,” but not so often as you do probably. Mostly when tired and sleepy/sloppy in grammar.

  • Turri,

totally agree with you! strong belwas wasn’t in in? good riddance!

this was titled characters returning. maybe there will be a “new characters” version of this.

  • I actually like this so much better than actual footage.

This is a real trailer, with probably a real piece of dialogue from the show, and it sets the mood without revealing too much…

This is going to be some serious kicking ass season, I’m telling you.

  • Omg, that music, that voice, those faces… My heart is pounding!

I am so pumped. Season 3 is almost here!!!

    I can stop watching this… Hah, I am such a nerd…

  • I’m glad they’re showing Sansa. I love her for how naive she was at the start of the franchise and how her character evolves from being isolated by being with people who appear strange to her.

  • Arthur,

You’re in good company my friend! :)

Though this mug can’t watch it because this mug doesn’t have sky :'( <—- Very sad face

  • This is a very powerful teaser. It really sparks back your interest.

It is so cost efficient and much for effective then that silly raven flying around our modern real world. I love it…

It’s like a portrait of each character, you can see from the scares on all their faces they went through a lot already from season 1 to 2. They are each attempting to climb that ladder…

I have to watch it a few more times then bed. But yeah, this is a much better teaser.

    Well played D&D, well played…

  • Gotta love how, with only a look or a simple movement, those actors can convey so much. Or maybe the amazing part is how much people looking want to read from them :) Then again, some people looked frailer then I’m imagining them, and some stronger, so I’m going to say great actors. And camera people. Ha.

I kept waiting to see Margaery and Stannis, given the parts they’re playing; then again, if this is supposed to be an indication of screentime during the season, them being left out makes sense I suppose.

  • hello guys
my english language is very weak.and not understand that what lilltefinger speak?
please write me everything that tell in this teaser
    pleaseeee
    tanx

  • Donelto:
Holy hair Robb, Richard has definitely let it grow out. More suiting of the King In the North if you ask me.

I was going to say. It’s very King in the North-y.

  • Great teaser! Very simple but it communicates so much. Nothing speaks better to the power of this story than our characters’ faces.

Speaking of faces, Richard Madden has a perfect one!

  • Kind of disappointed. This would have played better in November or December, not the middle of February only 6-7 weeks away from the season premiere (which, by the way, is the same bat-time and same bat-channel as the season finale of The Walking Dead.)

  • Why isn’t anyone else freaking out as much as I am about how badass Joffrey looks in this vid… MY GOSH, that look on his face is enough to tide me over ’til the 31st of March…All hatred for his character aside, Jack Gleeson OWNS his character, he IS his character…

  • SerKenjiGerrard:

Agreed, I don’t want to punch him in the face quite as much now………………quite as much

  • Like most of you, I wish we’d get a trailer with actual footage. This teaser doesn’t really give us anything we haven’t already seen, but I do like it in an artistic sense. It’s a great collection of portraits. The dramatic lighting reminds me of Caravaggio paintings, and the actors offer a lot of expression in their faces.

Is this “chaos is a ladder” thing an actual quote from the book? If it is, I don’t remember the context.

  • NewJeffCT:

    Same bat-time, maybe, but I don’t think it’s on the same bat-channel.

  • Agreed – J0ff’s look is incredible… Very exciting promo despite lack of any actual footage. Sometimes such “previews” are way better than trailers with too much exposure.

  • The Anchoress,

It would be awesome if they use Florence and the Machine’s ‘Breath of Life’ in the season 3 trailer, or the choral buildup and crescendo from The Dark Knight Rises track ‘Imagine the Fire’.

  • Love it! Joffrey looked badass!

Can’t wait for the full trailer in two weeks and I hope that S2 recap mentioned above is good.

  • This “ladder speach” fits nicely with that what D&D told about s3 in “Season 3: Invitation to the Set” video in which they say that this season is “rise and fall season”.

  • I think it’s excellent for a teaser. Plus, the irony was we even got a little tease of seasons to come at the end with Tyrion smirking to Littlefinger’s line about the “climb”. I love it!

  • Aegon the Conqueror:
Glad to see HBO made up for that horrible first teaser!

Hey, it wasn’t horrible! Just different than what we expected. The few non readers I know who watched liked it better than this teaser.

Loved each and every single close up shot here, not too enticed with the “chaos” lines… but that’s just me.

  • Tír Airgid,

The first one was just so visually terrible that I couldn’t really get past that. I may have listened to the Rains of Castamere a few dozen times that day, but they could’ve done about any other visual and it would’ve been better. Perhaps a dramatic recap of Blackwater footage while Rains was playing.

Either way I’m happy with this one, because the little speech is great and the characters all have their game faces on.

  • Yes! I was correct!

#GoTFans, there will be hidden Season 2 deleted scenes aka Dragon Eggs on the #GameofThrones S2 Blu-ray. Find out how to unlock them on 2/19

Have you found any yet WiC?

Hopefully that means the Sansa/Hound scene they released a pic of and the full Irri death scene we know was filmed.

Speaking of the Hound, I wonder why they chose to show him in this promo over other more central characters like Stannis. Maybe it means we’ll see more of him this season (wishful thinking).
Maybe a scene or two of him evading or more likely killing the Gold cloaks chasing him for fleeing the city last season.

  • Is it just me or does Lena look a more convincing blonde here than she did in previous seasons? Sure it was only a brief glimpse, but kudos to the makeup people and whoever made that wig.

  • Nick_Scryer:
    Yes! I was correct!

    Just so.

  • I’ve commented about this here before, but as far as true teasers go, this really is about as good as it gets.

The speech by Littlefinger, is well-written, relevant to the season and performed with intensity and conviction.
Presenting the cast with just a dark background and their faces, makes it more intimate and reminds us (me, at least) of just how much we love them, and how characterbased the story is.
The music is ominous, and a sign of exiting and dramatic things to come. – Anyone noticed the slow, steadfast single beats of a drum …? What might they hint at? : )

  • sjwenings,

I concur 100%. This teaser is masterful.

And I have a feeling that the drumbeats you refer to indicate that D & D will not be holding back when the time comes. I don’t think there is a moment in the books that I am both excited about and dreading about. It’s going to be something else. I have full trust in David Nutter, he directed some fantastically terrifying moments on The X Files. The RW is going to go down as epic television. Mark my words.

  • Tír Airgid,

    Agreed.
Personally I loved the Raven Tease and it’s concept of the Game of Thrones world returing to our world. The raven being the messenger bird in that world alerting our world to the return was perfect….

Of course I’m biased since , while I do enjoy seeing new characters in very brief unrecognizable non-acton scenes, I am not a fan of any recognizable scene footage making its way into teases and tralers. Plus, I was one of the few that did not like the Seven Devils trailer nearly as much as other trailers for the series.

To me this Chaos tease is the preferred format.
Some lines of dialog narrated by one of the brilliant actors along with some moody stock footage of the actors.

  • Donelto:
Holy hair Robb, Richard has definitely let it grow out. More suiting of the King In the North if you ask me.

And it looks hot on him, too. Bonus eye candy!

  • This is way better than the “Back to the Future Crow” mess. Still, I am pretty disappointed with the art direction in the season 3 promos so far. It almost looks like HBO is trying to appeal to Twilight/Hunger Games fans with the awkward portrait close ups in this one.

Something about the look of this promo is out of character/off theme for the show. It’s too clean. It’s too staged. Too stiff. Too generic. There is nothing here that says GoT/ASOIAF at all (visually, not counting the VO content). Nothing that makes me think “Wow, only GoT could make an ad like that.” The characters could be replaced with the cast of Downton Abbey or Mad Men and it would work just the same. This is as generic as a commercial can get. Which at least is consistent with the high school level art direction in other s3 promos, but far less impressive than the season 1 and 2 stuff.

  • Nerd,

I loved the monologue, and I was even okay with the close ups, but there should have been something in the background. All they really needed to do was include thunder and lightning in the background instead of just darkness and it would have probably fit better.

  • Nerd,

I agree. I try not to be one of “those” fans and complain about everything but I’m really not impressed. I’m glad they showed Sansa and Sandor but it’s not a creative teaser. GoT is known for top of the line quality and that’s not how they’ve marketed season 3 so far. I hope the real trailer will change my mind.

  • Very happy to see the Hound. Thanks, HBO!

Looking forward to the first time he says to Arya, your sister the pretty little bird. :)

  • I want the trailer now, I have already watched this what 5 maybe 6 times already in the space of a few minutes. I actually like Robb and Catelyn, though I would have liked to have seen Bran but that wouldn’t have fit the whole theme of the “trailer” now would it. Please HBO put us out of our misery and give us a trailer please.

  • the goat,

Cool! I can’t wait to view the whole discussion. I wonder who Kit thinks is the rightful king? To me it is Stannis. Might makes right. Robert conquered the throne the same way Aegon conquered Westeros. Stannis is his rightful heir.

  • Tyrion Pimpslap,

Totally agree. The monologue was the best part for sure. But it definitely lacked an atmosphere that fit with the GoT world. Which could have easily been remedied by some background images like you suggested.

I hate to sound unappreciative. We really are one of the most spoiled fan bases out there thanks to HBO. I am only so critical of the visual aspects because I do the same kind of design/marketing for a living and have seen the GoT marketing as a benchmark for quality and innovation in the past. They set the bar so high it must be tough to outdo themselves each season.

  • MyBFFTheHound,

I tend to agree…there is a slight resemblance, particularly given Maisie’s expression in this video. I probably would never have noticed if you hadn’t mentioned it, but I do think there’s a similarity.

And as for the actual teaser, I thought it was very well done. I especially love the fact that Arya’s face appears as Littlefinger says, “Some are given a chance to climb.” Well-timed, indeed! :)

  • I have to admit, im now a little worried for the premiere, its also the night of the walking deads season finale, which continuously breaks records after breaks, premieres or finales

i know what we will all be watching that night, but what about those who havent read the books that like both? Will possibly slightly lower ratings for this premiere hurt the future of the show??? Certainly hope not..

  • JD,
“Will possibly slightly lower ratings for this premiere hurt the future of the show??? Certainly hope not..”
No, not at all. I can’t believe there are people who still worry about this show being cancelled.

  • JD,

Though it does suck that it premieres on the same day as the Walking Dead finale because it is always exciting to see how much the ratings have grown since it has been off the air but whatever they are they won’t be as big as they would be if the TWD wasn’t airing at the same time.

  • I really wouldn’t worry too much about the premier ratings. Even if they are down(which I doubt they will be) HBO is more than aware of how insanely huge The Walking Dead is. it’s only one episode and it’s not like HBO doesn’t replay it again a again, so people who decide on TWD will have plenty of opportunitys to catch up before episode 2.

  • JD,

I know one thing, Im having a Game of Thrones premiere party and Ill be watching TWD at 11PM or on DVR the next day.

  • my jimmies be definately rustled by the fact that this is the season that Sansa starts learning(in a way) from Littlefinger how to play the Game of Thrones!

  • JD,

As far as HBO calculates its ratings I don’t think that the TWD finale will affect the Season 3 premiere numbers too greatly….

HBO does not look at ratings the way broadcast networks do by looking at the initial air numbers only, they take into consideration the 9pm airing, the subsequent airings at 10 and/or 11pm and then OnDemand and DVR views (I think for the first 24 hours after an episode airs IIRC).

Most fans of GoT will watch it at 9pm, but those who do not will almost cerainly watch it on their DVR after TWD airs or they will watch the 10/ 11pm airing. Some will probably even watch both. I would not be surprised if the numbers were up honestly.

  • What’s truly bothersome is how the Red Wedding will ostensibly be aired during Memorial Day weekend. We saw how huge the ratings dipped for Blackwater… and that was OK, because people heard secondhand how awesome it was, but not necessarily that there were any shocking moments… They enjoyed it on rerun with no loss of pleasure. This year’s Memorial Day festivity is, I fear, going to lose its punch, after being heard of secondhand, for all those who elected to spend MD doing other things.

  • pntrlqst,

That was also the same night Hatfields & McCoys premiered on History and that broke all kinds of records. It put a significant dent in GoTs ratings for that episode. I really don’t think the holiday has such a big impact. People usually party Fri and Sat then take it easy on Sun night. At least every person I know does that.

  • Do people still believe the premier rating matters to HBO? All they care about is total viewership. It doesn’t matter when you watch, so long as you do watch. It is basically like Netflix in that way. I’d pay more attention to DVD/BR sales, as that is where the money is really made.

  • Chaos isn’t a pit (Daenerys)
Chaos is a ladder (Tyrion) (Sansa)
Many who try to climb it fail, (Joffrey)
never get to try again. (Sandor turning away)
    The fall breaks them. (Jaime)
Some, given a chance to climb, (Cersei)(Arya)
they cling to the realm, (Robb)
    or the gods, (Catelyn)
    or love. (Jon)
Only the ladder is real. (Tyrion smirk)
The climb is all there is.

there is a lot of symbolism here: the fall breaks Jaime, Joffrey fails at gaining true power, Sansa has the skill to climb the ladder and Tyrion plays his game. Cersei was given the chance to climb but never used it effectively

  • I just noticed that the preview has hit the over one million views on youtube in two days…

Nearly every game of thrones preview/trailer gets at least one million views, I wonder if we will start seeing ratings like the walking dead got the other night?

  • the mighty hodor,

AMC = Available in 100+ million homes in the US
HBO = Around 30 million subscribers in the US

We will never see 12 million people tuning in to the Sunday premier episode on HBO. Not with the amount of ways you can watch the show on your own time. GOT averaged 10.5-11 million total viewers per episode last season. That is what HBO cares about. The show will hover around 4 million viewers for the 9 PM Sunday telecasts.

  • Shallow comment of the day: I have to say that Sophie Turner looks stunning. With her looks and talent I have a feeling that she will be around for a long time.
