Season 2 Recap Show coming on March 9th

A 13-minute “Game of Thrones: Season 2 Recap Show” is scheduled to be available via HBO On Demand on March 9th. Given the length of the feature, I am going to guess it is more than just clips from season two. It seems likely that it will be similar to the 22-minute season one recap show which featured interviews with the cast and producers.

More evidence pointing to it being more than just clips from season 2 is that on March 4th, there will be a 3-minute S1 & S2 Recap added to HBO On Demand. That sort of length is more in-line with a clip-filled recap.

I’ve sent an inquiry on to HBO for more info about this particular feature. We’ll update the post if/when we learn more.

Winter Is Coming: After the bust that was the “About Game of Thrones” feature that hit On Demand today (it was just a recycled feature from pre-season one), I’m hoping this is something worthwhile.

  • Useless if you’ve seen all the episodes. C’mon, where’s the actual trailer and the key art at??

  • Should we be worried that this season may be having production issues? Are there any report that would hint at this besides the strange marketing choices and lack of videos?
I can’t be the only one wondering what is going on in the hbo camp. I wonder if this is a strategy for keeping things underwraps this season or maybe its postering.

  • That production video was a huge disappointment. I want to know what the first episode is called. I would also like to see the Official Season 3 poster.

If it is just a straight recap, then yeah, it would be pretty useless for hardcore fans like us. But if, like I suspect, it includes new interviews with cast and crew, it would be worth a watch.

The trailer is coming on Sunday and the official poster usually releases about a month before the season premiere, so look for that around the beginning of March.

I don’t think so. These sorts of marketing decisions have little to do with the production. I think this is just HBO marketing deciding to be a bit more reserved in their promoting of season 3.

The trailer is coming Sunday – as in February 24th? Will it be airing before or after anything in particular and at what time?

  • Oh good. I only caught the first half of season 1.

Need to see how Ned kicked ass and rules now

  • Trailer for next Sunday. Poster normally soon afterwards… and these recaps… S3 is definitly coming !

Expecting one or two more vlogs for the remaining of February !

  • No new In production vid today after all, then.

Man! I’m glad I already knew we’d get a trailer this sunday… Now I’m only a little frustrated instead of a lot, lol!

It will likely be this Sunday, yes. Probably right before Girls at 9 PM ET.

    Winter Is Coming,

When do you think we’ll know the names of the episodes ?

They will be revealed on the schedule slowly, usually we get them about a month before the episode is set to air. Right now the premiere episode is on HBO’s schedule, but without a title. I suspect that will change once HBO sends out an official press release announcing the show’s impending premiere (which should be in the next week or two).

  • I’m not to worried I guess. There has been alot of advertising for GoT: Season 2 release. It’s not like HBO has forgotten about their most important show. I think the official campaign kicks off tomorrow … same day as DVD release, exactly 40 days out, and really do you need more than 40 days to advertise an already popular show?

  • This doesn’t seem like a marketing strategy to me. Smells more like they are stalling and for all the wrong reasons.

I have a really bad feeling about this.

Well, Sunday is D-Day as far as whether or not there are problems. I hope not. I hope we get a trailer on par or better than the ‘Seven Devils’ trailer of Season 2 or the ‘Fear and Blood’ of season 1.

    Fingers crossed…

  • Obosi,

Stalling for what? Boardwalk Empire had exactly one season 3 trailer and didn’t air until 6 weeks before the premier. GOT’s trailer will air 5 weeks before the premier. This is now standard operating procedure for HBO. We were just spoiled by the first 2 seasons.

  • I must be the only person who didn’t like the ‘Seven Devils’ trailer. The music was way too anachronistic for me.

I would just relax for now but I think there is an easy way to gauge if the wait for a season 3 trailer taking this long was really necessary

If we see some big scenes with lots of CGI, Direwolves, Dragons and/or battle scenes then I would guess that was what the wait was for. If we get a season 3 trailer with no dragons, no dire wolves or big battle scene footage then it would be pretty obvious to me that GoT season 3 is way behind schedule.

So basically, big budget CGI = worth the wait and understandable.
No big budget CGI = WTF was the wait for?

Just my thoughts on the matter…

  • Last year HBO released 4 character profiles three weeks before season 2.

So along with those and location videos of Ireland, Morocco, Croatia, and Iceland. March should have one new video showing season 3 footage each week.

  • Hey i just saw a trailer for the film the great gatsby. It opens december 25th and it was a long 3 min trailer. I dont think GOT has any productions issues in regards to them delaying the trailer. It seems to be the marketing technique.

  • I think the delay is in part due to the amount of promotion being put into the “take the black” S2 DVD launch. Once that’s over I think the footage will flow.

  • I think people are kinda blowing this out of proportion. Yes it would be nice if we had something by now, but this is a tv show not a movie, and like others have said, this seems to be HBO’s model for its shows now.

The Blu-ray (currently Amazon’s #1 best-selling blu-ray) is just about to be released, and then they will start their advertising for the third season.

No news is good news, right? Right?

    … seriously?

Here’s the deal… even if the season is complete crap, they would be able to splice together a 30 second trailer that would blow your socks off. You seriously believe that the season is SO BAD for some reason that they can’t find 30 seconds of good footage? Because that is what you seem to be guessing at. Don’t be silly. They make awesome trailers for crappy movies all the time. There’s also some pretty bad/misleading trailers for good movies that completely miss what the movie is about. (A good recent example: watch trailers for “The Grey”, then watch the movie, then wonder wtf the trailer designer was thinking.)

Will the season be awesome? Probably. Only somebody with a really negative outlook on life would expect otherwise after what they’ve done thus far. Will it be bad? Who knows… but the lack of a 30 second trailer at this point is not a reason to question the quality of the season overall, just the quality of HBO’s marketing hacks.

  • Being around some people who weren’t familiar with Game of thrones, the DVD commercial was very effective for getting their attention actually.

  • Tyrion Pimpslap,

I think it’s very likely, given how close they’re hewing to the s02 marketing strategy, especially fairly unestablished factions like the BWB. Now the DVD’s launched, their focus will be on getting as many subscribers caught up and ready to watch the premiere as possible.

  • Some people have said that HBO doesn’t want to spend as much money on advertising GOT as it used to now that it is an established hit which is true but putting together a trailer to air on HBO wouldn’t really cost them anything. They may have to pay some people to put it together but thats nothing for a huge company like HBO. They’re going to release a trailer anyway, would it cost more to release it two weeks ago than next week? No. It only costs money to put commercials on regular TV, billboard ads,or some of the other stunts they were doing for S1 like the food truck and it makes sense why they have toned that down but the lack of S3 footage has nothing to do with money or lack of quality of S3. The real reason I think is the show Girls. Right now Girls is getting a lot of buzz(even though no one is watching), it had the cover of EW recently and now on the cover of Rolling Stone calling it the best show on TV and constantly has blogs written about it. HBO is delaying the promotion for GOT,which is an already established hit, because if they kick in promotion for GOT with awesome trailers and stuff for S3 it will overshadow their new buzzy show Girls which they are hoping becomes a hit.

  • Tired of waiting, I’m making my own trailer intro :]

Dany: This is not honorable, this is not how my brother Rhaegar would win back the seven kingdoms
Jorah: Rhaegar fought valiantly, Rhaegar fought nobly, Rhaegar fought honorably. And Rhaegar died.

If you don’t have a firm grasp of how television and cable works, then you probably shouldn’t try and comment on it.

First off, Girls will have plenty of buzz and audience (and has increased viewership over last season when it was a breakout hit for HBO) regardless of whether HBO airs a freaking GoT trailer or not. So let’s put that crazy conspiracy theory to bed and take off the tin foil hats.

Secondly, you can churn out a trailer like that, regardless of what’s going on with the production of the actual feature. And as has been mentioned, you can make an absolute piece of turd look awesome in a 3 minute trailer, so it’s quality says nothing about the quality of what it’s advertising. No issues regarding the production would preclude them from putting together a kick ass trailer so again, let’s stop with the crazy talk.

This is clearly an HBO marketing decision and the evidence lies in how they’ve been advertising their other shows throughout this past year (Boardwalk Empire, Girls etc.) Obviously they have done enough studies and focus groups that indicate that it is more impactful to commence the marketing blitz for a show around the 6 week mark as opposed to dribbling things out from a longer period out. You can question that decision if you like but I’m sure it’s something that they’ve put a lot of thought and research behind so unless you’ve got some evidence and facts and figures as to why this is would be detrimental, then it’s probably better to allow that they know what they’re doing here.

A good point has also been raised regarding the S2 Blu-Ray release and how that appears to have been the focus first and foremost. Blu-Ray sales are a massive revenue driver for HBO and they want to maximize them. I would say that I agree with the notion that as soon as you start pushing S3 on the masses and how awesome it’s going to be, the S2 stuff starts to seem like old news. The buzz right now is focused on reliving S2 and getting people to buy the S2 package in preparation for S3.

Seeing as the trailer is scheduled to come out this Sunday, they appear to be ready to ramp up into a fairly intensive campaign that immediately follows the S2 Blu Ray release, which makes sense.

I want to see new footage as much as the next guy (and to be fair, there has been a healthy chunk of new footage in all of the set reports they’ve put out), but most of this misplaced and crazy speculation comes out of impatience as opposed to any kind of critical thinking which is unfortunate.

  • For further reference, just so some people can see that this isn’t an isolated thing for HBO, here is the schedule of trailers for True Blood’s latest season:

First promo teaser (with no footage, just text and premiere date equivilant to the S3 Selyse voice over teaser for GoT ) – January 2012

First 30 second teaser with 10 secs of footage – Apr 1, 2012

Series of 4 “Invitation to the Set” videos – all through April 2012

    First trailer (1:30) – May 13, 2012

    2nd trailer (1:30) – May 27, 2012

    Previous season Blu-Ray release – May 29, 2012

    Season premiere – June 10, 2012

  • Just wanted to let people who will be purchasing the BR tomorrow that I found a dragon egg that nobody has reported. It is a deleted scene from ‘Valar Morghulis’ that features Littlefinger and Varys in the throne room. It is a fun scene with some great quips from Littlefinger. You can find it in the ‘Histories and Lore’ video about Harrenhal. Arrow down while in the preview screen for the video to find the dragon egg. It appears in the lower right hand corner of the screen when you arrow down with your remote.

  • Stop crying I don’t want to see too much footage anyway.s3 must remain a secret and D&D know this too.

  • Someone should put all the other minor characters that has been cast over the last few months on the cast page.

    Lame Lothar Frey
    “Violet”
    Mero
    Black Walder
    Roslin Frey
    Steelshanks
    Wendel Manderly
    Dean-Charles Chapman
and the females we had had cast in unknown roles that might be brothel scene girls or someone in Theons story or elsewhere
Also I think someone was cast as “grand torturer” or something….

Also there are some cast we have heard that are returning from Season 1/2 who are not on it, such as Rast, Pyp, Barriston, Rorge, Biter, Quaithe, Walder Frey, Lysa Arryn, Robyn Arryn

And some who might be returning????? Salla, Balon, Yara, Gregor, Kevan Lannister, Polliver any news on these?

I can see why Davos has not been put on there, and perhaps its best not to have Barriston either or not show where he is showing up…

I never stated in my comment that the lack of S3 trailer meant issues with the production or quality of S3, in fact I said the opposite. I also don’t agree that airing an awesome S3 trailer for GOT would take buzz away from Girls just that this could be the mindset of HBO. It seems stupid but It wouldn’t surprise me if they thought like this because they place a lot of emphasis on getting a show “buzz”. Just like how they wait until March to release the DVD/BluRay because they think it will “increase buzz” even though it would sell more during the holiday season. It’s stupid but this is the way they think. Also Girls is anything but a breakout hit. Its ratings are actually lower this season and though it gets a lot of media attention and buzz that means nothing when no one is watching and its ratings are mostly crap.

Jorah’s line is one of my favorite quotes from the entire series.

  • My two cents:
If HBO was releasing 3-4 trailers for every show months ahead of its air dates, it’d really begin to “water down” the actual content of the season. Some people like the wait and surprise of a new season, as opposed to the “show me every shot you’ve taken on set so I can analyze it myself” folks.
HBO must cater to its entire viewer base, which is probably not 100% GoT fans, unfortunately. Many people only watch what they see on TV; having a single, well planned and produced trailer might be more effective in gaining season-long viewers.
I’ll be honest, I have no idea how they weigh release dates and content, but as long as the season itself comes on time and with quality product, I’ll be a happy viewer.

  • AJN,

I think I agree for the most part….
I think the number of trailers can be kept to a smaller number. Personally I do not want to see footage before episodes air. I like to be as surprised as I can be considering I have read the books multiple times.

Howwevr I do think that the more supplemental videos have a purpose outside of JUST promoting a new season. ASOIAF is a very complex and detailed world. Game of Thrones is less so, but it still has far more characters, regions and histories than any other series on TV. I think those character and house featurettes really do help the non-readers to grasp some of the details of GoT much more easily.

So I guess I see no problem with less trailers, but I still think there should be a number of supplemental more informative videos….

  • Game of Thrones twitter said this

    “Didn’t get to #TaketheBlack & celebrate the #GoT S2 DVD/Blu-ray release at @BestBuyUnionSq? Stay tuned for a special treat today #GoTFans…”

Anything involving fire is always going to be one of the most dangerous things to shoot, and when it’s fire and a person everyone is on high alert.

Battle at the Fist of the First Men, I guess.

  • A-Gone: WTF?! They’re still filming 1 month before the broadcast ?

Nah, those posts are always about filming that was done months ago. Kind of annoying how they do that, but I guess they want to keep throwing us crumbs.
