HBO released a new trailer tonight entitled “Chaos,” featuring a voiceover from Aidan Gillen as Littlefinger about the scramble for power, with closeups of some returning favorites.
Ours is the Fury: A nice tease of a preview, though I am impatient for actual scene footage in a trailer. I do love that last little smile from Tyrion, and it’s great to see a variety of characters featured who are often ignored, like Sansa.

Nice!
Very reflective of the s02 marketing strategy in terms of peaking HBO subscriber tastes and die-hards like us with a v/o concerned with the conceptual: the nature of power games; the characters featured are also well timed to the words. You can taste Gillen’s relish in the speech. Also, signals a proper trailer on the 24th, perhaps with an equally awesome backing track as “Seven Devils” from last year.

Thieves thrive in chaos, they can steal more easily when others are distracted, so that is this woman’s theory on why Littlefinger does what he does…he aspires to steal the whole kit and kaboodle of the realm one bit at a time till he controls it all.

Even going in knowing that Sandor will hve a bigger role this year it was so nice to see him as one of the featured characters in the teaser! I felt McCann was under-utilized in the first two seasons…..

A woman doesn’t think it will be difficult, just more tricky in the costume department if Arya is to maintain the androgenous role for a bit. I’m going to call the emperor naked: this is a bad preview. All it consists of are cast members against a black background, previous main cast members so we don’t see anything remotely new.

Buggerit,
Well, with the exception of the Hound,Joffrey, and Robb, the others are the main POV characters from the books. I thought it was a good teaser, unlike the confusing ‘Three Eyed Raven’ one. Not as good as ‘The Cold Winds Are Rising’, but I doubt that is ever topped.
Tyrion PimpslapQuote Reply
Holy hair Robb, Richard has definitely let it grow out. More suiting of the King In the North if you ask me.
DoneltoQuote Reply
Tyrion Pimpslap,
No Davos though, who had the same number of chapters as Dany and represents Stannis’ faction. But I’m not quite as surprised given the possibility that HBO might want to keep Davos’ survival after Blackwater ambiguous and their apparent lack of attention and care for “Team Dragonstone”. Still, as the last surviving true older member of House Baratheon and a King, Stannis’ absence is rather jarring.

The first one was just so visually terrible that I couldn’t really get past that. I may have listened to the Rains of Castamere a few dozen times that day, but they could’ve done about any other visual and it would’ve been better. Perhaps a dramatic recap of Blackwater footage while Rains was playing.

Speaking of the Hound, I wonder why they chose to show him in this promo over other more central characters like Stannis. Maybe it means we’ll see more of him this season (wishful thinking).
Maybe a scene or two of him evading or more likely killing the Gold cloaks chasing him for fleeing the city last season.

I’ve commented about this here before, but as far as true teasers go, this really is about as good as it gets.
The speech by Littlefinger, is well-written, relevant to the season and performed with intensity and conviction.
Presenting the cast with just a dark background and their faces, makes it more intimate and reminds us (me, at least) of just how much we love them, and how characterbased the story is.
The music is ominous, and a sign of exiting and dramatic things to come. – Anyone noticed the slow, steadfast single beats of a drum …? What might they hint at? : )
sjweningsQuote Reply
sjwenings,
I concur 100%. This teaser is masterful.
And I have a feeling that the drumbeats you refer to indicate that D & D will not be holding back when the time comes. I don’t think there is a moment in the books that I am both excited about and dreading about. It’s going to be something else. I have full trust in David Nutter, he directed some fantastically terrifying moments on The X Files. The RW is going to go down as epic television. Mark my words.
Joshua TaylorQuote Reply
Tír Airgid,

Personally I loved the Raven Tease and it’s concept of the Game of Thrones world returing to our world. The raven being the messenger bird in that world alerting our world to the return was perfect….
Of course I’m biased since , while I do enjoy seeing new characters in very brief unrecognizable non-acton scenes, I am not a fan of any recognizable scene footage making its way into teases and tralers. Plus, I was one of the few that did not like the Seven Devils trailer nearly as much as other trailers for the series.
To me this Chaos tease is the preferred format.
Some lines of dialog narrated by one of the brilliant actors along with some moody stock footage of the actors.

This is way better than the “Back to the Future Crow” mess. Still, I am pretty disappointed with the art direction in the season 3 promos so far. It almost looks like HBO is trying to appeal to Twilight/Hunger Games fans with the awkward portrait close ups in this one.
Something about the look of this promo is out of character/off theme for the show. It’s too clean. It’s too staged. Too stiff. Too generic. There is nothing here that says GoT/ASOIAF at all (visually, not counting the VO content). Nothing that makes me think “Wow, only GoT could make an ad like that.” The characters could be replaced with the cast of Downton Abbey or Mad Men and it would work just the same. This is as generic as a commercial can get. Which at least is consistent with the high school level art direction in other s3 promos, but far less impressive than the season 1 and 2 stuff.
NerdQuote Reply
Nerd,
I loved the monologue, and I was even okay with the close ups, but there should have been something in the background. All they really needed to do was include thunder and lightning in the background instead of just darkness and it would have probably fit better.

I hate to sound unappreciative. We really are one of the most spoiled fan bases out there thanks to HBO. I am only so critical of the visual aspects because I do the same kind of design/marketing for a living and have seen the GoT marketing as a benchmark for quality and innovation in the past. Though it does suck that it premieres on the same day as the Walking Dead finale because it is always exciting to see how much the ratings have grown since it has been off the air but whatever they are they won’t be as big as they would be if the TWD wasn’t airing at the same time.
JamesLQuote Reply
I really wouldn’t worry too much about the premier ratings. Even if they are down(which I doubt they will be) HBO is more than aware of how insanely huge The Walking Dead is. it’s only one episode and it’s not like HBO doesn’t replay it again a again, so people who decide on TWD will have plenty of opportunitys to catch up before episode 2.

JD,
As far as HBO calculates its ratings I don’t think that the TWD finale will affect the Season 3 premiere numbers too greatly….
HBO does not look at ratings the way broadcast networks do by looking at the initial air numbers only, they take into consideration the 9pm airing, the subsequent airings at 10 and/or 11pm and then OnDemand and DVR views (I think for the first 24 hours after an episode airs IIRC).
Most fans of GoT will watch it at 9pm, but those who do not will almost cerainly watch it on their DVR after TWD airs or they will watch the 10/ 11pm airing. Some will probably even watch both. I would not be surprised if the numbers were up honestly.
DarquemodeQuote Reply
What’s truly bothersome is how the Red Wedding will ostensibly be aired during Memorial Day weekend. We saw how huge the ratings dipped for Blackwater… and that was OK, because people heard secondhand how awesome it was, but not necessarily that there were any shocking moments… They enjoyed it on rerun with no loss of pleasure. This year’s Memorial Day festivity is, I fear, going to lose its punch, after being heard of secondhand, for all those who elected to spend MD doing other things.
pntrlqstQuote Reply
pntrlqst,
That was also the same night Hatfields & McCoys premiered on History and that broke all kinds of records. It put a significant dent in GoTs ratings for that episode. I really don’t think the holiday has such a big impact. People usually party Fri and Sat then take it easy on Sun night. At least every person I know does that.
NerdQuote Reply
Do people still believe the premier rating matters to HBO? All they care about is total viewership. It doesn’t matter when you watch, so long as you do watch. It is basically like Netflix in that way. I’d pay more attention to DVD/BR sales, as that is where the money is really made.

there is a lot of symbolism here: the fall breaks Jaime, Joffrey fails at gaining true power, Sansa has the skill to climb the ladder and Tyrion plays his game. Cersei was given the chance to climb but never used it effectively

I just noticed that the preview has hit the over one million views on youtube in two days…
Nearly every game of thrones preview/trailer gets at least one million views, I wonder if we will start seeing ratings like the walking dead got the other night?

the mighty hodor,
AMC = Available in 100+ million homes in the US
HBO = Around 30 million subscribers in the US
We will never see 12 million people tuning in to the Sunday premier episode on HBO. Not with the amount of ways you can watch the show on your own time. GOT averaged 10.5-11 million total viewers per episode last season. That is what HBO cares about. The show will hover around 4 million viewers for the 9 PM Sunday telecasts.

Shallow comment of the day: I have to say that Sophie Turner looks stunning. With her looks and talent I have a feeling that she will be around for a long time.
