Game of Thrones season 3 premieres in LA

Source: @madcanard

HBO threw a lavish red carpet premiere for Game of Thrones‘ third season tonight in Hollywood. Held at the legendary Grauman’s Chinese Theater, the event brought together most of the main cast of the show, wearing their red carpet finest. Simone Boyce of The Daily Raven was on hand, getting video interviews that we should have for you tomorrow. In the meantime, enjoy these photos.

  • So what do they do there? Just watch the first episode and hang out? Also, where’s Theon??? /ugh don’t say smoking pot somewhere lol

  • Sophie looked absolutely stunning!

I’m so excited for season 3 to start, I think it’s going to be the best season yet!

  • I’m so glad they’re doing this in such great style–Thrones deserves this sort of attention and reception!! Seriously, has any other TV show had such a grand premiere?

But where are David and Dan?

  • Jose:
GRRM appears to have lost some weight, good for him

Sure does. Looks like he’s dropped at least 40lbs. Good for you George.

  • There are still more premiere photos trickling in, so keep checking the WiC tumblr. Aidan Gillen, Charles Dance, and others were there but the photos are only starting to come online. Very exciting evening! It’s great to see the cast all cleaned up and pretty. Nice change from the mud, though Nikolaj looks actually better in his dirty costume…but I digress.

  • GG:
Obviously the reviews will be embargoed but how about some vague first impressions?

I wasn’t at the premiere (dammit, why did I have to leave LA?), but I watched the episode at home, thanks to my screeners. I will have some more detailed impressions tomorrow, but for now I will repeat what I posted on Twitter:

The S3 premiere is FANTASTIC. Amazingly well-acted, stunning cinematography and effects. I can hardly believe it’s a TV show.

Oh, have no fear–am refreshing the page like a madwoman! : )

Thanks for keeping us properly up-to-date!!! I’d be going bananas from the excitement and urge to SEE PHOTOS RIGHT THIS BLOODY MINUTE otherwise!

I just got one simple question, how long was the episode ?

    I can’t wait.

  • Winter Is Coming,

Thank you, now I need to figure out, how to wait 2 weeks.

Already rewatched both seasons on bluray,
and doing that again right away would kinda cheapen the series for me.

  • Winter Is Coming,

OMG……. your screeners are making me insanely jealous :(

PS: Where you live again specifically? Not that I would totally crash out your place! Kidding :D

  • Winter Is Coming,

Thats good to hear because I haven’t really seen any reaction tweets about the quality of the episode from any of the people who were there. Normally you would hope to see people tweeting things like “amazing” or “epic premiere” but I haven’t seen anything like that. How would you rank it against the other 2 season premieres?

Cool, thanks! Looking forward to the detailed impressions, then.

Just one question actually i am dying to know if they introduced Mance as a singer like in the book.

  • Call me crazy but if I suddenly came into possession of the first few episodes I would not watch them before the broadcast premiere. NDA or no, half the fun is sharing the experience of seeing this with a group or a virtual group via twitter feed or here after the show airs and the shakes and wibbles subside. Watching it alone with nobody to share the highs and lows would be downright depressing, quite frankly…plus the wait for 5-10 would be even more painful.

I am quite envious of those who got to see it at the premiere, however. I sincerely wish HBO could rent out a cinema and run back episodes in groups of 3 or 4, every day, until the new season starts!

  • I’m so upset… I’m moving at the end of this month, so im going to miss the premier entirely since i wont have TV OR Internet.. i wanna cry

  • Jose,

Must be fasting because he’s writing so much, at least that’s what i like to think XD
I’m so upset… I’m moving at the end of this month, so im going to miss the premier entirely since i wont have TV OR Internet.. i wanna cry

  • This is unfare! There’s more than a weak…
BTW Why do Robb Stark look like a politician? :)))

  • All the ladies are so gorgeous. Lovin’ Natalia’s red hair. And Maisie and Sophie are growing up into such beautiful young women!

  • Wonderful pictures. I know Seattle is going to have a red carpet premiere on Thursday, I’m guessing we wont get the big hitters, but might get a few!

  • woo-hoo! A REAL Red Carpet finally – I ve been waiting for it from the S1!

btw, the GOT fever has started – it feels in the air! lol

  • A fashion remark:

What s up with that nuance of green our Ygritte is wearing?
It s quite popular I see – saw it already on some people over here.
I am pretty much positive in my comments at WiC, but hell, I hate this nuance of green.
    Forbid, I say, as indigo!

  • Gawd damn CVH is so hot, no wonder Stannis cant keep it in his pants. Our Khaleesi is just freaking adorable though, probably the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen. But the award for uber stylishness has to go to JBW.

  • Wow … I’m impressed. This premiere event seem huge! Yeah, I know hollywood gets much much crazier than this, but for a TV show? It’s growing bigger every year.

    The Rabbit,

    Haha :D

  • Winter Is Coming,

Does the first episode include every storyline? Or does it have a good concentrated flow on certain characters and then promise to feature the other major characters in the next episode?

  • The entire cast was looking great! Except…why does Kit always look so sad? He almost gives me a depression just looking at him… Please, Kit, learn how to smile!

  • Uhh, HOW did i not know about this?? I would have gone and gazed upon the spectacle from the sidewalk… or something

  • Knowing that people already saw what we can’t se till the 31st, drives me crazy :(( but hey 12 days left, actually 13 for Europe…
The premiere must have been quite an event… but why Conleth Hill and Jack Gleeson never show? Why are they so shy? :( Jack must have been the only one with a big-head poster that didn’t show..

Tar Kidho, He doesn’t look sad, he just has the cool face on. Works for him.

JamesL, I guess it was expected since her BwB introduction was moved in ep 2. Plus, in S2 premiere, she appeared briefly at the end without speaking, so it’s deja-vu a bit.

Winter Is Coming, didn’t D&D say that the episodes were longer, at about 57? Probably it is due to Arya’s plot being moved. Anyhow, when can we expect a review from you? thx.

  • I thought everyone looked stunningly beautiful, EPICally beautiful ;) and will just calmly ignore comments about people’s weight or facial expressions…

  • Maisie has in this picture an incredible resemblence with Michelle Fairley… I mean, I know she is her daughter, but really now.. a fake daughter. Amazing.

  • Not even trying to hop into the hatetrain, but I think Maisie looks beatifull. And Sophie, wow, don’t get me started but she is waaayy too hot to be that young.

  • Why do Stephen Dillane never go to these things? I want to see a interview with him about Stannis!!

  • Geez the women on the show are beautiful. Emilia, Natalie, Carice, Oona, Sophie, and on and on.

Props to the makeup department for making them look believable in Westeros.

  • is it just me, or is Maisie Williams growing into a beautiful young woman. I think she will be stunning in a few years

  • SourBillyTipton,

I read a tweet from James Moynihan of TV Guide, to paraphrase: “a solid start to season 3 but disappointed in the lack of Arya, Jaime and Brienne.”

    Does that help at all?

  • It’s funny to see everyone drooling over Carice when many fans slandered her looks when the the second season started. It must have been a consciousness decision by D & D to make Melisandre more refined and even Cronish on the show and not the over the top archetypal beautiful sorceress type she is in the books.

  • Characters that don’t appear in the S3 premiere ep include Arya, Bran, Theon, Jaime, and Brienne.

Characters that do appear include Mance, Davos, Missandei, Qyburn, Barristan…. and a motherfucking giant!!!!

  • Winter Is Coming,

    One question:

Does Sam appear in the premiere? And if so, is the way they show him surviving his Season 2 predicament satisfactory?

I love love love the fact that GoT has gotten so big that they have red carpet events for a friggin tv show. Hopefully this continues over the years. I’m guessing all the guests would be under an embargo until March 31st?

All the ladies looks amazing, especially Sophie Turner though holy hell! Sophie Stunner more like.

  • Nick_Scryer: Does Sam appear in the premiere? And if so, is the way they show him surviving his Season 2 predicament satisfactory?

He’s in it, yes. I would say it is less than satisfactory. The way they handle that whole situation is the one weak spot in the episode.

Thanks for telling us !! :) Can’t wait to see that.

  • I heard that GRRM was sitting with the kids at the party and Maisie Williams started singing Billie Jean using Sophie Turner’s hand as a microphone which resulted in the whole table breaking out into the song.

I’d love to have that on video!

  • The whole cast looked very good. My review from the pictures I’ve seen:
Best overall dressed female (hair, makeup, dress) Maisie Williams. She looked fun and ready for spring. #2-Michelle Fairley, nice to see her in white and she always looks good
Best overall dressed male-Richard Madden, when doesn’t he look good? Peter Dinklage is a close second, he always looks good on the red carpet.
Kit always looks like a deer in the headlights on red carpets…having seen some video online of the photographers interaction with stars on the red carpet, I can see why Kit looks like the way he does, because I would too.
Looking forward to the first episode!

  • Speaking of watching GoT on a theater screen, if I am not mistaken one of the small indie theater here in St. Louis showed the season 2 opener last year. I am not 100% sure mind you but I believe they did. It is worth a look in your area and see if one is doing it in your town or city as well. I will look an see for sure if they did last year. I will post back. (Never mind, just read it was a special premier put on by HBO and charter communications for season 2 opener. It was at the Tivoli theater in University city so doubtful they do it again this year. Maybe some other city get a special early premier. )

  • Hi Wic sorry to ask again but can u tell me if the introduction to mance is satisfactory? Does it follow the book?

  • After that last photo… I want Talissa to end up in Skagos with Osha and Rickon! OR have some sort of GoT spin-off with Oona and Natalia in a side-story a la Telma & Louise. Just get them both in the same project already!

  • Door,

Maybe it was for a greater good.

If I remember correctly, most critics loved the season 2 premiere but criticized it for having too many short scenes and quick cuts, in order to show all the main storylines in one episode.

Of course it would be good to see all our beloved characters in every episode. However, if the lack of them was good for the pace of the story, I can live perfectly well with it.

  • Winter Is Coming: He’s in it, yes. I would say it is less than satisfactory. The way they handle that whole situation is the one weak spot in the episode.

Is the Ser Barristan revelation epic in episode 1?

  • the entire cast looks lovely and after seeing natalie dormer’s gifs of her talking to grrm, she has officially become my how-to lady – how to carry yourself like royalty…how to be elegant…how to look effortlessly charming ^^,

  • I must have missed my invitation. I love all the hype and am very excited for the season. HBO this can be some of the extras for the DVD – video of the cast at an event like this, music videos, all the magazine covers. More character toys, would like a toy sword, direwolf, you get it.

  • feyrband:
damn, oona chaplin… i’d take a few arrows for that one, just sayin’

Would u get your head cut off and have a wolves head attached to your body for her?…..cause i would

  • Grrr…I can’t see any of the pictures!!

I am drooling, I am so jealous you’ve seen the first episode.

  • Dave Brownell:
I’m so upset… I’m moving at the end of this month, so im going to miss the premier entirely since i wont have TV OR Internet.. i wanna cry

Get thee to a hotel with HBO! It will be worth it!

  • Winter Is Coming: He’s in it, yes. I would say it is less than satisfactory. The way they handle that whole situation is the one weak spot in the episode.

Damn, damn, DAMN! If they’ve fucked up Sam the Slayer I will …. I will …. (sigh) keep watching, of course. But not happily!

  • Only 10 episodes, don’t be in a rush to watch them/get through them, savor them as much as you can as it’ll be another year again for more.

  • Wic-

Any way that you can post some photos of cast members that you don’t have on here that went? Like Esme, Natalie, Lena, Alfie, Liam, Gwen, etc? I know you have them on Tumbler, but I am not able to view Tumbler. Please please please!!!

  • Adam Whitehead:
    Winter Is Coming,

Title sequence locations? Do they drop Winterfell? Do we get Astapor in the first episode or are they still using Qarth?

    Cheers :)

The title sequence for the first ep shows King’s Landing, Winterfell, Harrenhal, Dragonstone, the Wall and Astapor.

  • Winter Is Coming: The title sequence for the first ep shows King’s Landing, Winterfell, Harrenhal, Dragonstone, the Wall and Astapor.

    Sweet!

Two related questions (Title screen), Is the length back to it was in Season 1?
    Is Winterfell burned down?

  • WiC,
Could you please tell us or hint at what are Sansa and Shae talking about in Ep 1 before LF appears? Thanks :)

Celebrity Stylists are pushing the color Emerald, at the moment. As Rose Lesley
‘s coiffure is a natural ginger redhead , the choice was easily made. Us commoners
choose any color that inspire us or our budget allowance.

Peter Dinklage is impeccably dressed, IMO.

Maisie is definitely Not little Arya anymore.

  • There was a semi-secret premiere in Dallas tonight and OMG! Bouncing off the walls (but then maybe that’s the free booze – nope – definitely the episode). Agree on the scene change (winter – does it involve a change in “jobs”?) and the reveal made me giddy :-). Again – maybe the free booze but so excited! Was fun and my hubby who can drink beer with gluten (the iron throne beer) says its quite good. From him, high praise.

This should be seen on a big screen EVERY week!

Ok back to real life – sigh :-)

  • Cast and crew appearing in Seattle on Thursday:

    Kit Harington (Jon Snow)
    Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaime Lannister)
    Maisie Williams (Arya Stark)
    Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark)
    John Bradley (Samwell Tarly)
    Rose Leslie (Ygritte)
    Natalie Dormer (Margaery Tyrell)

Creators and executive producers D.B. Weiss and David Benioff

  • Tyrion Pimpslap,

Yes- I was actually surprised and astounded a bit how well it translated to a big screne. My 45″ is not enough and I never thought Id want a home theater! Cant afford one but thats beside the point. If someone charged me to see it weekly in a theater I would pay to do it – it completely translated beyond my wildest dream and I did film editing way back when in college so Im not TOTALLY untrained (just mostly). Rough edit here or there that shows up a bit more on a giant screen but sheesh – that would be whining.

Im actually shocked this premier in Dallas did not get promoted more – there were empty seats and it made me sad because I never get to see something like this early and I know how many folks like me are dying to see it and would have been a bit fan boy there like me compared to some. They did not promote this well at all.

So some things I think I can safely say without violating any NDA – there is a dinner scene straight out of Real Housewives of Westeros that I loved, the reveal is as good as I ever could have expected, a certain king shows a touch of a sense of humor (a touch – by laughing) and Tyrion (well, actually Peter Dinklage’s performance) made me come THIS close to tears.

  • René: Poor Carice / Melisandre: http://youtu.be/a9Zbh3CxKnA Premiere night is light and full of terrors.

She’s stunningly gorgeous. And how about Gwendoline Christie’s sexy Betty Rubble dress and those shoes! My two favorite thrones actresses. I love how many cast members were able to show up; they look like they’re having fun (though I didn’t like the photographers mistreating Melisandre; I hope she gives them to the flames)

  • Roopert,

Could you put under spoilers what exactly the job change is? Was it better than last seasons premiere? Because I thought the S2 premiere was kind of underwhelming.

  • […] The red carpet premiere in LA started it off and now many cities around the world are getting in the act and having their own Game of Thrones season 3 premiere screenings. Last night they had a screening and panel in San Francisco, tonight there will be one in Seattle. There are also Time Warner Cable-hosted fan screenings in Los Angeles and New York City tonight and, over the next several days, there will be screenings at Texas A&M and in London. […]
