  • AWESOME! Reminded again and again why Dany is my fave :) They are obviously way pumping up her arc in the promos, though, b/c 1. she’s popular 2. they have to keep RW and Bastard of Bolton and goodbye Jaime’s hand hush hush!

  • AMAZING!!! WOW. This has to be the best show in a long time, and this comes from a book fan.

  • Jen:

Amen to that! I’m pumped for her S3 shenanigans!

  • Speechless. Only Daenerys Stormborn, of House Targaryen, of the Blood of old Valyria, Mother of Dragons, yadda yadda could pull me away from studying for midterms. Fantastic, absolutely fantastic.

  • Amanda:
I think I just died. Sunday still feels so far away!

I have three tabs open: WiC, westeros.org, and TWoP in an attempt to get my fix for the next 6 days. People aren’t posting fast enough for my liking!! (Everything in the Newsweek thread happened while I was at work)

    Whose voice is that?

Wasn’t a fan of the delivery. Still, can’t wait.

I’m pretty sure it’s Mel, you can see her for talking for a second.

Sounds nothing like Mel imo. Completely different accent.

  • I think the dragons on Thrones are the best I have seen in any media, but I am still of the school of thought that thinks the less of them the better I guess. Something about the way they are gliding/ flying in the end shot looks odd to me.

Admittedly, I’m not a fan of VFX being up front as a rule and I tend to notice even better quality CGI and be pulled OUT of a scene more than drawn in. So maybe it is just me?

Regardless, counting the hours for the season premiere!

  • How epic are those dragons?! And that location is breathe taking with the army coming out of the walls dragons over head….can’t wait for Sunday!!!

  • Some additional wild speculation based on single shots:
    1. Jon Snow with an arrow in his back… on the ground?
    2. Joff turns as Tyrion sticks a knife in the table… at the PW?

Ring the bells! Cue fundamentalist panic!

  • Spliced:

The knife scene is taken directly from the book, and if I recall, it takes place during the Tyrion/Sansa wedding, according to what some here have posted.

  • Spliced,

Well he does take an arrow to the back of leg, which is where that could have been or maybe the TV guys wanted to dramatize and put one in his back. Given that he lands on grass, I’m pretty confident it’s the same basic thing that happens in the book.

  • I really hope they have Dany speaking Valyrian for the first time when a certain.. ahem.. transaction is concluded. Looks stunning – can’t wait.

Oh god another PW mention -_-. The sky is blue today, that means the PW is in this season

  • I’m just happy we’re finally getting some of the Azor Ahai prophecy from Mel, her role was way too vague last Season.

  • Is there any mention of the Dornish in the first 4 episodes? Last season we had Cersei state “the Dornish loathe us”. I know thy aren’t cast this season but I want to know if they are teased or discussed at all

  • Bruce Tyrell:
I really hope they have Dany speaking Valyrian for the first time when a certain.. ahem.. transaction is concluded.Looks stunning – can’t wait.

I’m really interested in how the speaking of Valyrian (or not) shakes out this season. I agree that it would be an awesome reveal. In the books we, as readers, know she understands but I’m trying to think of how that would play out on a TV show without any set up.

  • I believe that is Stannis’s wife speaking, but it could be Mel, it doesn’t quite sound like her here.

  • Oh man, I’m losing my mind … is there anywhere (besides the review post a couple before this one) where people who have seen episodes 1-4 are discussing super detailed spoilery synopses??? I can’t wait, I want to knowwwww

  • That was awesome!

Also, that was the same dialogue as the original season 3 teaser. I thought winter said that it wasn’t Mel speaking, but it’s clearly her in this promo.

  • Spliced,

Given how we see her shoot an arrow whilst looking really pissed in the first trailer, I’d hazard a guess and say Ygritte shoots Jon with an arrow when she catches him defecting back to the NW.

I’m pretty sure the bit where Tyrion sticks his knife in the table is from his wedding to Sansa. I just re-read that bit in the books. He does it when Joffrey starts jibing him about the bedding and Tyrion tells him to shut his mouth or he’ll geld him.

  • Every review I have seen so far raves about Dany’s story in the first four episodes. I’m not a Dany fan after ADWD, but I loved her in ASOS and AGOT. I think she will take the lead back from Tyrion as the most popular character in the TV show this season. Though I am most looking forward to Jaime’s arc.

  • Tyrion Pimpslap:
I’m not a Dany fan after ADWD, but I loved her in ASOS and AGOT.

Dany is my favorite and I started to get tired of her through most of ADWD. To what extent do you think D&D will start to play with her arc once she reaches Mereen? What would she need to have done (or not done) to maintain your interest past the events of ASOS?

  • Turncloak,

Given how, in one of the trailers(can’t remember which), we see a shot on Cersei & Olenna in the Sept of Baelor as Margaery & Joffrey walk out into the sun(presumably onto a balcony for your first public viewing of the happy couple), I’d say it’s guarunteed that the Purple Wedding is in this season.

  • Anguissette1979: I’m really interested in how the speaking of Valyrian (or not) shakes out this season. I agree that it would be an awesome reveal. In the books we, as readers, know she understands but I’m trying to think of how that would play out on a TV show without any set up.

Valyrian is in. It’s confirmed by the guy who created the Dorthraki language for the show

  • Turncloak: Valyrian is in. It’s confirmed by the guy who created the Dorthraki language for the show

Right, which is awesome. Apparently Missandei does a phenomenal job speaking it. I’m just curious if/how they will do the reveal that Dany doesn’t actually need a translator and has known what the slavers were saying the whole time.

  • Anguissette1979,

Can’t they just comment on it right before the conversation … like “Oh, here’s a translator” and Dany is like “I NEED NO F-ING TRANSLATOR … oh, but translate anyway, it will be lol-worthy” (with way better dialogue, heh heh)

  • Jen,

I suppose they could. A commenter upthread was wondering if they’d just have her randomly drop some perfect Valyrian right before she fries the slavers which is where this whole thing came from.

Dany – hiding her Valyrian for the lulz. :-P

  • In other, slightly off-topic, news Peter Dinklage will be on The Daily Show in 15 minutes.

  • Ok, so I guess I was wrong and it is Mel then. Not as lyrical as some of her previous lines unfortunately. Can tell she’s foreign with the: “Wwwwwwlose” :P

Is someone going to record the Dinklage interview? Would be much appreciated for us poor folk outside the US.

  • steiner:
Is someone going to record the Dinklage interview? Would be much appreciated for us poor folk outside the US.

I am watching it but I don’t have the setup to record it, unfortunately. Maybe Darquemode will come through (again). The guest interview always happens at the end of the show so there’s still time for someone with more skills than I to get it set up.

  • I’ve said before, and I’ll said it again. This season is going to be fucking epic.

  • Also, what the hell is that thing that seems to grab at the camera halfway through after what I presume is Sam running away? Wight? Because my version of this gets pixelated just at that moment. It looks like the Wampa Creature from Hoth, to be honest. (Luke doesn’t get killed. That’s a spoiler.)

  • steiner,

They hardly talked about GoT at all but the combination of Jon Stewart and Peter Dinklage was pretty funny. Nerdglaze.com!! I get Nerdglaze after just about every promo :-P

  • I hope they don’t let on that she knows Valyrian until she starts speaking it. It’ll be even more of a badass moment, particularly for the non-readers!

  • steiner,

I happened to read the comments JUST before he came on so I recorded it for you…. now back to darkness. The light is not my friend tonight. Damn migraines!

That’s Sansa’s wedding or it could be another completely new scene. Logic says it won’t be in this season (No Mace Tyrell-father of the bride, no Red Viper, No Penny).

  • GG:

    SPOILER:

That scene is actually in episode 4, and is more of a “feeling out” of the Great Sept, introducing us and the happy bride-and-groom-to-be to its interior. (Rather than sexposition this season it seems as though they’re going with various forms of Joffsposition, wherein he gleefully recalls some of Westeros’s more violent histories to Margaery whilst wooing her.)

I have no real proof to the contrary, but the pacing doesn’t feel like we’ll get the PW this season. But you never know!

  • Fire And Blood,

    HI THERE,

Since you’ve been generous enough to put poor speculation to rest on one front, how about the Jaime/Brienne fight? Many believe it will turn into a one-sided domination from Brienne’s end… Can you confirm they are wrong there?

    :) Thanks!

  • if you pause it just right it looks like there is an arrow sticking out of the back of Jon’s right leg, guess he pissed off a certain lady.

I was wondering, does it mention in the book which leg he gets shot in? If it happened to be the same as the ankle he broke then his limping for those scenes would be the easiest acting Kit has ever done. Or maybe he did it on purpose for the part? Guy is really committed to his craft.

  • bah. it’s so obvious that they completely killed the charaterization of Viserion. D&D from the beginning of the show have failed to understand the complessity of the dragon’s personality and.. :D

seriously, great stuff. i don’t know, maybe it’s a known information..you know something about the budget for this season?

  • Mescalinic: bah. it’s so obvious that they completely killed the charaterization of Viserion. D&D from the beginning of the show have failed to understand the complessity of the dragon’s personality and.. :D

    Haha. ;D

Great clip! Sunday can’t come fast enough.

  • By far the most exciting thing about this season (which is full of exciting things):

Dany taking some goddamn action. No more whining horse-queen, just the freer of slaves, conqueror of Slaver’s Bay, and bringer of death.

  • In the UK they just keep showing the same original one trailer on Sky Atlantic. Why do they not have all these other trailers! Do you they need to pay for them or somat? Or just lazy? I don’t understand it as it would help increase viewers. I think there must be at least 5 or 6 in total now.

  • the dragons over the army are epic.. I’ve seen the black dragon, the green dragon, but have they made viserion the white-cream dragon he is? I can’t notice. Maybe is the fault of that beautiful sunset.

Fire And Blood, thanks for clarifing that. I’m on the “PW in S4″ team.

Omg, 5 days!! oh wait.. 6 for Europe.. booo

    HELLOOOOO!

No, it is not one-sided until the very end.

It, like every Jaime / Brienne scene in this season thus far, is perfect. Were the Daenerys parts not quite so bleeping great, I would declare this to be THE Jaime / Brienne season.

    Wrath of the Gods:
    Fire And Blood,

You’ve seen the first four episodes already?

I have, ser! I shall answer whatever questions I can!

  • Fire And Blood,

Phew! Thanks! I also wanted to know that after being worried by the last promo.

    2 Questions.

Does the Giant look good? Do you think non-readers will like it?
Does the Hound appear in any of the first 4 episodes?

  • Fire And Blood,

Thx for your answer on the Jaime/Brienne storyline. Another question for you: does Jaime loses his hand in those first 4 episodes ?
If yes, is it well portrayed?

    thx in advance!

  • Fire And Blood,

I am so jealous right now, the closer sunday gets, the more anxious i get!

Can you tell anything spoilery about Theons arc in the first few episodes?
Do Robb & Catelyn get a good amount of screen time? Catelyn was seriously butchered the last half of S2

  • GG,

Well you’re wrong. Just because Joff and Margery are walking out to greet the public doesn’t mean its a wedding.. It very well is the announcement of their betrothal to the common folk.

  • The biggest mistake they made is to tak Carian HInd as Mance Ryder .
He looks too much a warlike person while in the book Mance is
A smart and intelligent person with humour

  • ALL OF MY ANSWERS ARE SPOILERS:

    Hounded:
    Fire And Blood,

How are the new cast additions?
I’m most excited to see Mance, Turmind, Lady Olenna, Beric and The Blackfish!

Mance is believable, though I missed the lute. And missed Val and Dalla. Tormund I was not thrilled with, he seemed too grim. Not a Har! to be heard.

Olenna is spot on. Dame Diana Rigg! Straight from the books, aside from no Left or Right, and not as small as the novel version.

I only saw Beric in the 4th episode. He seemed good! Thoros was extremely cool AND funny. Quirky Paul Kaye is quirky. Anguy was funnier than in the books.

Blackfish was taller than expected. Blackfish Blues is gonna swoon.

    Nick_Scryer:

    2 Questions.

Does the Giant look good? Do you think non-readers will like it?
Does the Hound appear in any of the first 4 episodes?

The giant looks great. I actually pictured something slightly more hunched over. Neanderthal maybe? But this sucker was erect. And … tall.

The Hound is in episodes 2, 3, and 4. He’s a talkative sucker this season too. He has what I call an Alan Rickman moment.

    Lily:

Thx for your answer on the Jaime/Brienne storyline. Another question for you: does Jaime loses his hand in those first 4 episodes ?
If yes, is it well portrayed?

    thx in advance!

Everything about Jaime is well portrayed. He loses his hand at the very end of episode 3. WHACK! Pause. SCREAM! Cut to black. And then they play a punk-rock version of “The Bear And The Maiden Fair” while the credits roll. It’s freaking brilliant. (And that episode was directed by Benioff!)

  • JD:

Can you tell anything spoilery about Theons arc in the first few episodes?
Do Robb & Catelyn get a good amount of screen time? Catelyn was seriously butchered the last half of S2

I will tell you Theon goes many places without going anywhere at all. We see him every episode, but only little bits.

Robb and Cat do not get a boatload of screen time yet, no. I think that will come later. They do go to Riverrun for Hoster’s funeral. (We never see a living Hoster, though the corpse looks a little like Bernard Hill.) And weirdly, they start out at Harrenhal.

  • Fire And Blood,

Thank the gods! Lack of Hound goodness was my main complaint about the first two seasons.

Although I don’t know what an Alan Rickman moment is, I’m excited to find out haha

    Thanks again.

  • kingslayer:
    Fire And Blood,

How do they re-introduce barristan selmy?

    Thanks in advance

They never use the “Arstan Whitebeard” moniker, and I can see why. We the viewer recognize Selmy immediately, beard or no. Other than that it’s the same as in the book. He saves Dany from an assassination – I suppose a “manticore” is used, though really it looks like a large, funky-colored scorpion.

There’s a definite Ben Kenobi vibe going on with him too, hooded cloak and all. For a while I thought he was going to tell Ser Jorah, “These are not the Unsullied you are looking for.”

  • Devon01:
    Fire And Blood,

The Battle of the Fist of the First Men will happen off screen?

Yeah, in true Game of Thrones fashion (Blackwater aside) we only see the results, really. There’s a small fight, but the battle is largely done.

  • Fire And Blood: TWoP

Soooo that’s where the “rock” version comes in, and the “extras singing” in ep 7 with that-scene-with-a-big-animal.. CANT FUCKING WAIT FOR JAIME! Hell, I even had a Danish family last night at the restaurant I work (THE real worl actress’s job lol); first thought they were Scottish or sth, then I asked and geee, Danish? DO THEY KNOW NCW?? Yep, the wife did xD And she watches GOT And she also adores NCW. The husband was quiet during this bit of the conversation.. xD

  • Fire And Blood,

WOOOOW!! Another Jaime/Brienne question in the books, we only see Jaime PoV for those scenes, here how are Brienne’s reactions?
Then, do we have Brienne ‘Saphires’ rape rescue scene?

    Thx!

  • Fire And Blood,

    Cool! Thanks!

It all sounds awesome. Hopefully Mance will get his lute for Winterfell. And maybe Tormund will lighten up later on? I suspected Dame Diana would nail it. And yeah Clive Russell who’s playing the Blackfish is 6 foot 7″ I believe.

  • Fay:
    Fire And Blood,

WOOOOW!! Another Jaime/Brienne question in the books, we only see Jaime PoV for those scenes, here how are Brienne’s reactions?
Then, do we have Brienne ‘Saphires’ rape rescue scene?

Gwendoline plays it excellently. Just angry and defiant at first (“I don’t care about my teeth”) and then realistically panicked. They drag her into the woods and she’s screaming, like…. Whoooooo. It’s just… grimly realistic.

And yes. The answer is yes. No lisps though. Well, not overtly.

  • Fire And Blood,

Sorry about the questions, but I cant resist!

1: Is their much action in the first 4 episodes? Any large scale set pieces?
    2: How is Locke/other boltons?
3: Are there many deaths so far?
    4: How does riverun look?

    _______________________________________________
The second item could also be at the gift presentation where Joff shreds the book Tyrion gives him and Tyrion changes his gift to the dagger, hinting that he knows about how Joff hired that crook to kill Bran in S1.

  • Greatjon of Slumber,

Since I’ve already read the books, I don’t feel like anything can be “ruined” … I know all the major plot points, it’s just the execution. In this situation, I personally feel a lot better knowing which characters are going to appear when and generally how they are going to deal with certain plots so that I won’t be anxiously waiting for something I really want to happen, and then end up disappointed. It’s only the first 4 episodes, after all … but we won’t get to see the 4th until 4 weeks from Sunday, lol! THAT’S TOO LONG TO WAIT. hehe

  • Shampoo,

I agree. It is the first casting I have had a huge issue with. He is nothing like what is described in the books. Henry Ian Cusick would have been who I looked to.

  • Shampoo,

According to the wiki: “Mance is a big man, long legged and lean, broad in the chest and shoulders. His once long brown hair is now gone mostly grey. He is an unremarkable-looking man in his middle years.”

    Sounds pretty accurate to me.

  • Jen,

Point taken. I understand. Still, it’s not much longer to wait for something, and then we have a good long week of debating and discussing…

  • Don’t read the Fire and Blood spoilers! They will break even the most die-hard of book readers! Screaaaaaammmmmm!!!!!!!

  • I had one question for Fire and Blood and anyone else who has seen some of the third season already (thanks for all of the advance information). How is Melisandre presented so far? I had read some spoilers to the effect that she mocked Davos for his son’s death, and I was concerned, because I definitely had a feeling last season that the show is presenting her as rather more malicious than she is in the books. Thanks.

/not a purist, just a fan of “Team Dragonstone”

  • I stopped reading FaB’s posts because I decided I didn’t want to know that much after all, but there is one thing I’d like to know, from anyone who might know the answer:

    Is Shireen blonde?

  • FaB’s episode character arc rankings to this point are so odd to me, considering he’s got the worst season 2 arc at the top and the best at the bottom. I’m hoping for a lot out of the Stannis and Theon arcs after such a strong season 2, but Dany…S2 was so meh for her. I’m glad they’ve fixed her. I hope Stannis/Theon are better in S3 than Dany was in 2.

  • Fire And Blood,

Is Orell really mixed up with Varamyr?
How is Mackenzie Crook? I love him!
Do we get another character from the Mance group named (besides Orell, Tormund, Rattleshirt and Ygritte)? Even if it’s a cameo.

    Thanks! Bye

  • Can you confirm whether Jaime calls Brienne “wench” at any point in these early episodes?

Thank you so much for sharing this information!

  • Anguissette1979,

Danny is probably the most controversial character out there for book fans but her arch in book 3 is my favorite POV by far in the series. Things were almost always bleak and terrible for most of our heroes in SoS but I could always count on Dany to pop up every 100 pages or so and kick some ass!

  • GG,

Fab saw the first 4 episodes and this is what he has to say about that scene and the possibility of the PW in season 3:

“That scene is actually in episode 4, and is more of a “feeling out” of the Great Sept, introducing us and the happy bride-and-groom-to-be to its interior. (Rather than sexposition this season it seems as though they’re going with various forms of Joffsposition, wherein he gleefully recalls some of Westeros’s more violent histories to Margaery whilst wooing her.)”

“I have no real proof to the contrary, but the pacing doesn’t feel like we’ll get the PW this season. But you never know!”

  • GG,

From FaB (read some posts above):

That scene is actually in episode 4, and is more of a “feeling out” of the Great Sept, introducing us and the happy bride-and-groom-to-be to its interior.

  • Turncloak,

But the Tyrells don’t attend Sansa’s wedding. So what other reason does Olenna have to be in the Sept with Cersei? And if they push off Tyrion’s trial to the back half of season 4, they can introduce the Red Viper in the s4 premiere and have at least 6 eps to establish him. He doesn’t need to attend the PW. As for Penny, if she wears a helmet for the fight, she could easily be an unnamed extra during the PW, with the role being expanded in s4/5. That’s what they did with Beric Dondarrion in s1. As for Mace, his role is practically being cut alltogether from what I can see. They would only make caseting announcement for him if he was being played by an actor of some repute.

  • Jason Nichols,

But they’re walking out of the Sept of Baelor. Whatsmore, their betrothal was announced in the Throne room at the end of last season. Unless you think they could keep that secret.

Either way the PW is such a monumental event that I don’t understand how it could occur anywhere but in a finale. In order to get Tyrion’s story in, it’ll have to happer within the first 3-4 eps of season 4. PW is finale material. God help them trying to put together trailers for next season and not spoil the PW if it does occur in early s4.

  • deisegal:
    Fire And Blood,

Are Selyse and Shireen in any of the four episodes?or at least in episodes 2-4 because I already heard they are not in the first episode

There is no Selyse or Shireen in the first four episodes.

I was also asked about is there any Yara and Balon Greyjoy in the first 4 episodes:

None, sorry! No Yara, no Balon so far.

    GG,

Yeah, the pieces you are seeing are Joffrey, Margaery, Cersei, and Olenna touring the Great Sept in episode 4. Joff gives us some Joffsposition while he woos Margaery, showing her the tombs of all these Targaryen rulers, whilst Olenna and Cersei plan for the wedding. Olenna is on her best behavior, but Cersei is still suspicious of her. I assume the later scene with Joff escorting Sansa will be Sansa’s wedding to Tyrion.

So even though they’re planning for Joff and Marg’s wedding, it doesn’t feel like it’s going to happen this season. But who knows?

Oh, and I speak of this Alan Rickman moment with the Hound (I am the TVEquals reviewer mentioned above)—don’t read into it too much, there’s just one look he gives and one line he delivers that’s essentially… ex…tended… in an…. Alan… Rickman… type…

…way. (At least in my head. But I may be crazy.)

  • A Secret Baratheon:
FaB, one thing I’ve been wondering about, are Rorge and Biter with “Locke” and his men? Do they appear at all in the episodes you’ve seen?

No, no Rorge or Biter thus far. But weirdly, we do get Qyburn, introduced as a survivor of the Harrenhal massacre in the very first episode.

  • Fire And Blood,

    Just a few questions!

Has the hound fought anyone so far (the trailers show him fighting in a wood)?
Has there been much action/sword fighting?
Has the death count been ramped up or down?
How are the Boltons? Is Locke good? Has there been much Roose?

  • Anguissette1979: I have three tabs open: WiC, westeros.org, and TWoP in an attempt to get my fix for the next 6 days. People aren’t posting fast enough for my liking!! (Everything in the Newsweek thread happened while I was at work)

LOL! I’m doing the same thing!

  • Vlad:

    How are the Boltons?

No Hound fights yet, his duel with Beric Dondarrion is set up in episode 4 and will very likely take place in episode 5.

Best sword fight so far is Jaime vs. Brienne in episode 2. In episode 4 we get the Night’s Watch mutiny, which has some nice bloody action. And we get the massacre of the Astapori nobility by Dany’s Unsullied at the end of episode 4.

Death count is assuredly ramped up, if we’re talking the first four episodes season to season, but no name characters have died yet—other than Craster and the Old Bear Jeor Mormont in episode 4. Oh, and Kraznys, the Astapori slaver.

Boltons are Boltons. Nothing hugely special. A little crueler than your average northman, perhaps. Ramsay kills a group of his own men in order to fool Theon, so I’d kind of hate to be a Bolton.

  • Vlad,

And yes, Locke is VERY good. Noah Taylor was a great find. We don’t get a lot of Roose. Dude’s just kind of lurking in the background for now…

  • Ramsay kills a group of his own men in order to fool Theon, so I’d kind of hate to be a Bolton.

MY MIND IS BLOWN. Good lord, what is going on with that storyline?? I’m so anxious!! Seriously, bring on the spoilers, my body is ready~~ … if it’s disappointing so far, I’m hoping it builds to awesomeness in the next 6 episodes :/

  • GG,

I reckon they might mention that Mace has gone to take Storm’s End from Stannis. They could use his absence as the reason they have to post-pone Joffrey and Margarey’s wedding because non-book readers might be like ‘whats taking this wedding so damn long?’

Then they could introduce Mace at the beginning of series 5 coming in time for the wedding. I don’t think they could cut him out completely. He’s hand of the King now in the books!

  • Hounded,

I think it’s possible they might leave Mace out all together. He has yet to make a significant contrubution to the plot, and his role as Tyrion’s judge could be replaced by the QoT.

  • Fire And Blood: No, no Rorge or Biter thus far. But weirdly, we do get Qyburn, introduced as a survivor of the Harrenhal massacre in the very first episode.

Hurm. Seems weird that they introduced them if they’re not gonna be part of the Bloody Mummers, or their counterparts.

I’m glad you mentioned Craster. With no real news about Robert Pugh coming back, I was a bit worried.

  • FaB, you didn’t answer my question :(

“Is Orell really mixed up with Varamyr?
How is Mackenzie Crook? I love him!
Do we get another character from the Mance group named (besides Orell, Tormund, Rattleshirt and Ygritte)? Even if it’s a cameo.

    Thanks! Bye

  • Vlad:
    Fire And Blood,

Any more details on the ramsey bit? That sounded interesting!

It’s basically pretty simple: Theon wakes chained to a rack in the dungeons of some unknown citadel. They torture him for a while, and we don’t see Ramsay except as a shy-looking young man cleaning the dungeon in the background. After the torturers finally leave Theon alone, Ramsay (or “Boy” I should say) goes to Theon and promises to free him soon. After more torturing, Theon is left alone again, and at last Ramsay frees him, sneaking him out, getting him on a horse and telling him to meet him (somewhere). Theon flees on horseback.

But Theon is soon pursued by (bannerless) Bolton men and caught, and beaten some more (Alfie is basically getting the shit kicked out of him this season). One Bolton man has the others yank his trousers down for some quality rape time, when “Boy” reappears, killing all four men with arrows. The last man to die whispers, “You little bastard…” before he keels over.

Ramsay and Theon flee into some sort of underground tunnel; all this time Ramsay has been getting Theon to tell him about the details of taking Winterfell–and Theon finally spills the truth about the miller’s sons, as well as the fact that he doesn’t know where Bran and Rickon are. Ramsay gets a rather intent look on his face, leads Theon around a corner… and right back into the room with the rack. They basiacally went in a circle. “Boy” reveals he is part of the deception and accuses Theon of killing the four men. They tie Theon to the rack again as he screams in horror.

I have said before that I think this may be one of the weakest arcs of the season, and while that may seem to be an insult, it’s not. The season as a whole is VERY good, so if I’m forced to choose the least shiny diamond out of a pile of diamonds, it will be the one I have the most questions about. I still enjoyed it for what it was. I’m not sure how much Theon torture show-only watchers can handle. I guess we’ll see!

  • sunspear:
    Fire And Blood,
Can you tell if there’s anything to the mel goes to the brotherhood to get Gendry theory?

I think there is, actually, and whoever came up with it first should get some sort of freaking prize. Even watching the first four eps, with as little Stannis and Melisandre as we get, I wouldn’t have seen where this was going… but now knowing that theory, the pieces are put in place. Stannis at one point is basically telling Mel (in his own sort of Stannis way) that he wants to make another shadowbaby again to deal with Joffrey and Robb. Melisandre basically gives him a pitying look (it’s very difficult for a man to garner pity sex) and says, “Your fire has burned low,” and that another attempt will probably kill him. But she also implies that there is another way “that requires sacrifice,” and leaves Dragonstone on a boat…

…And I think she will probably show up at the BwB cave to meet with Thoros and see Gendry and go: O HAI THERE.

Basically. I could be wrong about that. But it feels like it’s going that way.

  • A Secret Baratheon: Hurm. Seems weird that they introduced them if they’re not gonna be part of the Bloody Mummers, or their counterparts.

I’m glad you mentioned Craster. With no real news about Robert Pugh coming back, I was a bit worried.

There are no Bloody Mummers, period, which is a pity, but… enh. Robert Pugh is at his Crasterly best. And he has more of a beard this time.

Crook is good, but we don’t get much. He’s certainly not playing his Pirates of the Caribbean character. Much more feral. But the jury is still out, there have only been two Jon Snow scenes so far.

I briefly thought we got Styr the Magnar in a non-speaking role, but Bryan Cogman corrected me and said it wasn’t Styr. (But he did reiterate there are still six episodes left in the season, so the plate isn’t fully set right now.) We may get more. So far there’s no Val or Dalla either; basically the Wildling leadership consists of Mance, Tormund, and Rattleshirt. We do see Rattleshirt without his skull helmet though.

  • Fire And Blood,

WOW, all that stuff of Theon in 3 episodes (he doesn’t appeared in episode 1), I am imagining what will happen in the next 6 episodes..In my predictions for S3, about Theon’s arc, the whole thing of fake Ramsay occupy the whole S3.

  • Fire And Blood,

All of this sounds great to me. :)

Plus, Theon has now revealed to Ramsay that the Starks kids are still alive.. which might lead to some action for Bran and co down the road.

  • zod:

I was thinking that too! Something extra for Branjeneerashaodor to encounter maybe!

  • JoshT,

In the Newsweek thread, FaB confirmed Burn plays the disgruntled Night’s Watch brother who starts the mutiny at Craster’s.

  • Jen,

    I know, thanks..

But Ramsay doesn’t really care about the Starks in the books.

Here, on the other hand, he seems to set up a plan to have Theon reveal what he knows about them. This will probably lead to something else later in the season..

I guess they’ll try to spice up Bran’s storyline a bit.

  • Fire And Blood,

In your review you mentioned that you were put off by Iwan Rheon’s weird hair colour, is it a wig made to look like the straggly long hair associated with Ramsay, or is it dyed a light colour or something?

  • Bolan:
    Fire And Blood,

In your review you mentioned that you were put off by Iwan Rheon’s weird hair colour, is it a wig made to look like the straggly long hair associated with Ramsay, or is it dyed a light colour or something?

No, it seemed like his hair, because it was so short (though I guess it could have been a really short wig)… it was really dark. It may have been the lighting but it looked REALLY dark red. Almost dark maroon. It didn’t look like the color belonged on him. (The same argument some people have made about Cersei’s wig I guess.)

  • Fire And Blood: I was thinking that too! Something extra for Branjeneerashaodor to encounter maybe!

I just spent like 30 seconds trying to pronounce that lol…

Anyways, thanks for all the inside info. Okay so what I really want to know is, how much screen time will we have for the direwolves/dragons in the first 4 episodes? The promotions are definitely amping them up a bit (esp the dragons), and we know they have a bigger budget. I was really dissapointed with how sparingly they showed them off in season 2. Hoping that changes.

  • Oh boy! Somebody edit my comment. I tried to spoiler tag it but totally failed at it. Can’t do it with my phone

  • The guy firing the arrow from horseback seen in a few trailers looks a lot like one of the Bolton troop castings.

  • Josla,

Theon is saved from that, yeah. And I suppose it depends on what you mean by deserved. If you are of the opinion that a murderer should be punished by being raped, then I guess he did deserve it! Different strokes…

  • Bolan:
The guy firing the arrow from horseback seen in a few trailers looks a lot like one of the Bolton troop castings.

That was a Bolton man, yep!

  • In the first four episodes, do we get any hints or moments between Arya and Gendry, and in which episode will we say goodbye to Hot Pie? Is it a big scene, or just a, episode starts and he’s merely mentioned to have stayed behind.

  • Fire And Blood,

The same color as Catelyn’s hair? I was expecting they’d give him a long wig, but I don’t mind it much. Can you tell us if he captures Ramsay’s essence? Is he creepy and evil like the bastard?

Edit: And can you tell us if they showed the Dreadfort from the outside? I’m curious about what it looks like.

  • Michael Draycott:
    Fire And Blood,

Does Sam slay a White Walker?

Not yet! I have a feeling that’s coming really soon though. If not in episode 5, then in 6. He’s only just now fled Craster’s with Gilly and the babe, with Rast screaming after him.

  • Daenys the Dreamer,

Woah, seriously? Perhaps they should have said “I hope Theon gets murdered” instead. Would that have worked for you, or should the mods ban “death apologism” as well when concerning opinions about fictional characters?

  • Hi, I think this was asked before, but could you confirm whether Jaime has called Brienne “Wench”yet?

  • Daenys the Dreamer:
Why do themods allow rape apologism on this site? It’s disgusting.

We allow a lot of things on the site. Rarely will we swoop down and censor. We foster dialogue, debate, points of contention discussed freely and with (one hopes) minimal acrimony.

Murder is often a topic of discussion here. Some would contend rape is a worse fate than death which, I’ve heard told, is often so very final, but not many.

As to the scene in question, Theon became the most panicked when he realized that was to be his fate—being emasculated, essentially, having his power taken from him in a horrible fashion. He screamed when they crushed his ankles on the rack, and he screamed when they shoved things under his fingernails… but it was an altogether different, more gut-wrenching scream when those Bolton men were holding him down and the one started stripping off his breeches. I think even Theon-haters have to wince.

  • dcz:
Hi, I think this was asked before, but could you confirm whether Jaime has called Brienne “Wench”yet?

I cannot confirm or deny, I was not listening for it, tragically.

  • I’m really interested in how the general audience will feel about Theon’s and Jaime’s fate, after the show has made them even bigger villains before and will probably hurt them even more now.

I find myself actually hoping it gets really dark and twisted – if it didn’t sound so strange, I’d cheerfully declare myself to be on the rape train.

    /choo-choo

  • Hounded,

Oh no I don’t mean the cut him out of the books, just that they’ve cut him out of SoS. How can they push of PW til season 5? What are they gonna do with Tyrion in s4 if PW doesn’t happen. The entire back half of SoS is motivated by the PW.

  • pntrlqst,

    Fire And Blood,

Both your comments are utterly revolting. Rape apologism is offensive and can be even triggering for rape survivors and it definitely doesn’t foster discussion. Even Westeros.org, which has a lot of problematic stuff, doesn’t allow rape apology. Such comments lead to deletions, warnings, etc.

  • Daenys the Dreamer,

So saying “I would love to see that character die/get tortured” is somehow much worse than saying “maybe they deserve to get raped?” Hmm, I dont follow you on that, and I have a sneaking suspicion that this website does not have a large rape victim community.

Also, “rape-apology?” Is that even a thing?

  • Daenys the Dreamer,

Yes, rape is horrible. As I just described, as seen in Theon’s rather violent reaction. Or are you saying it can’t be discussed? What is acceptable, exactly?

I have yet to hear your views on murder apologists. Or are those acceptable? Jokes about killing? “I’m gonna murder that guy.” Comedy gold. Put it to you this way, if someone was standing over me with a heavy club and gave me the choice between being violated or having my brains bashed in, I’m taking that club up the backside and thanking my lucky stars I get to live to fight another day.

Look, there’s only so much mincing and avoiding a person can do. Pretty soon everything is a “trigger,” everyone is offended, no one discusses the topic, and it never sees the light of day. (Which is what the Vatican would like, I’m sure.)

(And now I’ve insulted the Catholics. Great. I apologize.)

    And Sergeant Hulka says…

  • Fire And Blood,

So the Hound’s Alan Rickman moment you speak of…what type of Rickman are you talking about here? Is its a Hans Gruber moment? A Sherrif of Nottingham moment? A Sense and Sensibility moment? A Snape moment? A Love Actually moment?

  • Joshua Taylor,

Oh, and I speak of this Alan Rickman moment with the Hound (I am the TVEquals reviewer mentioned above)—don’t read into it too much, there’s just one look he gives and one line he delivers that’s essentially… ex…tended… in an…. Alan… Rickman… type…

…way. (At least in my head. But I may be crazy.)

  • We’ll I know a lot of bitches that deserve to be raped. Rape is such an awesome punishment. Yea rape!

  • The Hans Gruber version of the Hound:

“Nice armour. Tohbo Mott, Street of Steel. I have two myself.”

  • How long is the Brienne/Jaime sword fight? The books makes it pretty long.

Is there a lot of Arya/Gendry?

Do we see the attraction from Bran to Meera?

  • cassandra munoz: How long is the Brienne/Jaime sword fight? The books makes it pretty long.

Is there a lot of Arya/Gendry?

Do we see the attraction from Bran to Meera?

It actually is pretty long. Brienne just wears him out. Jaime doesn’t have the stamina to keep up with someone like her any more. Granted, she’s in full armor and he is not. At one point he throws his shoulder into her ribs—and just bounces right off. I really enjoyed it.

There’s some Arya / Gendry. Their introduction in episode 2 has him berating her about why she didn’t just have Jaqen kill Joffrey and Tywin and end the whole bloody war. Which is pretty funny, as he’s basically echoing the fans. Better than Arya / Gendry though is a really nice moment between Arya and Hot Pie.

No attraction so far. Bran is developing a faster connection with Jojen, who is played excellently (and somewhat differently) by Thomas Brodie Sangster.

  • Joshua Taylor:

I may be overstating this. I don’t think it reflects any one of Rickman’s particular works. But there’s a look he gets that Rory McCann kind of does. It just struck me at that moment, “Wow, that reminded me of Rickman.” There’s a good chance other people won’t even see (or agree with) what I saw.

  • Fire And Blood,

I’m glad! Their fight it so well written, I’m glad it was given the proper time.

I can’t wait to see the kids with the BWB.

Really looking forward to seeing Thomas take on Jojen.

    How is Ellie portraying Meera.

And on which note are Arya/BwB and Brienne/Jamies stories left by ep. 4

Does Arya wear the Acorn dress?

Do we see Brienne throwing the rocks ?

  • Fire and Blood,

Are there any superfluous sex scenes thus far? I’m okay with graphic sex on television, as long as it serves a purpose. But there’s been too much sex between non-characters for my liking

  • cassandra munoz:

I’m enjoying Thomas’s Jojen more than book Jojen. He’s thin, but not sickly or weak, though he does at one point say, “I don’t carry weapons, my sister does.” His posture I can only describe as “graceful” He would play a fantastic elf in LotR, put it that way.

Ellie as Meera hasn’t really come into her own yet. Less screen time than Jojen so far. A bit standoffish. She is developing a nice rivalry with Osha, which some people don’t like the thought of, knowing the “women are only seen as rivals for other women” trope… but I actually think it turns it on its ear, because you have the two males—Bran and Jojen—who are noncombatants, and their two protectors—Osha and Meera—who clearly are. So the Osha / Meera rivalry is akin to a male pissing contest, seeing who can out-athlete the other. I enjoy that strange little gender swap.

No acorn dress for Arya as yet. She ends episode 4 in the BwB cave as the Hound and Beric are about to square off.

Jaime and Brienne are being taken (somewhere) in the clutches of Loche and his Bolton-bannered men. Brienne has just had a quiet talk with Jaime, urging him not to give up. He’s pretty despondent over losing the hand. Episode 4 is just a really bad day for Jaime Lannister.

    No rock-throwing for Brienne.

  • MummerChild:
    Fire And Blood,

How much Arya material do we get within the first four episodes? I’ve heard that there isn’t much and I’d like to get some confirmation.

No Arya in episode one. We get some in episode 2 (encountering the BwB). episode 3 (at the Inn of the Kneeling Man with Thoros) and episode 4 (brought to the cave of the BwB).

  • The Lightning Lord:
    Fire and Blood,

Are there any superfluous sex scenes thus far? I’m okay with graphic sex on television, as long as it serves a purpose. But there’s been too much sex between non-characters for my liking

Very little sex. There’s some pre-sex with a topless Bronn and a topless prostitute in a brothel (which Pod interrupts), and then later more pre-sex when Tyrion and Bronn pay for three (THREE!) very agile and naked prostitutes for Pod.

There’s also a running gag in which, apparently, Pod is so good in bed (it’s all offscreen) the prostitutes refuse his money… but I’m waiting for the other shoe to drop. Because as it is, it sounds a little unbelievable. I get the gag (HA! IT’S POD!) But… there has to be something else behind this, right? Like what prostitute refuses money? Sounds like some weird male fantasy…

  • Fire And Blood,

Good to hear. Although that thing about Pod is a bit odd. Maybe its just to inject some more humor into the show? I can’t imagine a gag like that serving any real purpose

  • HarHar:
Fire and Blood: Does the dany and jorah scene happen on the boat in the first 4 episodes?

    Very first episode!

  • The Theon stuff sounds interesting, but I can definitely see how endless torture scenes may lose their sense of foreboding and horror and just become depressing in a wearisome way. It sounds like show Ramsay is more able and less of a wretch than the book counterpart, a choice to suit the actor better?

  • Bolan:

He’s quick on his feet, not plodding like the slightly doughy Ramsay we know from the books. And he’s clearly an expert with the bow. I like the idea of Iwan Rheon as Ramsay—again, it was good—I just think it could have been better.

  • Going back to the Jaime Brienne fight, does Brienne effectively ‘win’ then? Or is the fight cut short by the Bolton bannermen showing up? Also is it adequately explained that Brienne’s eventual dominance is from stamina? Not that Brienne’s any slouch with the sword, but in a fair fight she couldn’t stand up to the Kingslayer (at least not book Brienne). I hope the show really plays up the fact that Jaime Lannister is THE best swordsman in the Seven Kingdoms, making his maiming even more shocking

  • Fire And Blood,

Are you still answering questions? :)

I was wondering if Ramsay actually calls Theon “Reek” yet? Does he make him his creature? And has any flaying happened in the first episodes?
The Reek character arc has been my favourite in book five, and him being Theon was such a shocking reveal that I’m wondering how they are handling his story in the TV series. The audience recognises Theon, so they probably don’t re-introduce him as “Reek” but show us how he is being transformed into that character?

    Thank you!

  • FAB, if you are still answering questions here, I have one – in another review, I’ve seen where Brienne treats Jaime with contempt, saying he whines, cries and quits, and then tells him “you sound like a bloody woman”, which is horribly OOC for Brienne. Can you confirm that line takes place before or after Jaime loses his hand?
