Great trailer. Loved Brienne and the Bear, and was very happy to see Stannis. But why arent they showing more Arya. She is by far my favourite character in the show (becuase of Maisie Williams) and i was hoping to see more of her. I love her story arc with the brotherhood and hope the show has plenty of scenes involving them

Wolfswood,
There is nothing wrong with having some sex scenes like that though. It’s those stupid whore house scenes they need to stay away from. Thats why this show gets criticized so much becuase the sexual content is usually very off putting and rarely sexy. This show has had very little actual love making.

There were some really good new shots in there. Yara Greyjoy is confirmed for this season at 0.52 and the shot of the Bear was amazing.
Couple of questions too. Who was the girl crawling on the bed at 0.54 in what looks like Littlefingers brothel (oh joy)? And also was that Jorah or Stannis who is fighting in what looks to be a battle ground at 0.59? Found it hard to tell them apart with the lighting and quickness of that shot.

The overwhelming amount of sex in the books came from Dany and Drogo and Tyrion and Shae. People in love having sex.
JamesLQuote Reply
I think a lot of that stems from the fact that a lot of people were kind of unhappy with Robb and Talisa’s relationship as a whole. It was perceived as artificial, and so the sex scene was seen as just being kinda boring (though filled with pretty people).

Turncloak,
Ha! Definitely not. I never said that everyone who had sex in Game of Thrones loves each other, though. And that’s okay! Loads of people who aren’t in love with each other have sex, and I don’t think there’s anything at all wrong with showing that as long as it is in some way relevant to character or to plot.
I just wanted to point out that people disliking the Robb and Talisa scene probably doesn’t have much to do with how those characters feel about each other, and probably has much more to do with the fact that their relationship is pretty flat.

Yara confirmed then… this could be a shot from Balon’s funerals.

SDGM,
I don’t actually have a problem with them adding in a Robb and Talisa sex scene. Or sex scenes in general, really. When I said unneeded, I meant that it doesn’t really add anything to their relationship. We already know that they’re crazy about each other and are young and probably having oodles and oodles of sex. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but it isn’t really needed.
Really, I hope they don’t add in useless exposition to the scene.

Although I was initially disappointed that the “extended” trailer was only “extended” by 21 seconds, I’m incredibly excited about the new content! I love the sight of the unsullied with Dany standing in front of them looking so badass. Also, speaking of the Mhysa herself, the ending shot with Drogon flying towards Dany and Jorah on the ship made me giddy. Of course, the whole Brienne/Bear pit scene was also incredible. I’m so excited for that scene and Gwendoline looks great. All in all, fantastic trailer; I’m even starting to like the music! My only criticism would be…WHERE ARE THE TYRELL’S?! I don’t understand the complaining about the sex in the show or in the books. Sex is a part of life and in this world life is short. The characters seem to take pleasure where they can and it adds a quite lovely level of depth to the humanity of the characters. both light and dark shades of humanity come out in sexuality and the series does a good job of capturing it. Also, with all the dark moments coming up this season I think it will be more of a test of the audience than Ned losing his head.

At 0:23 we are looking at some men of the Night’s Watch burning someone’s body at Craster’s Keep. Who can it be? Don’t say Mormont, as I don’t think after the mutiny there will be anyone left around to give him a funeral.
At 0:29 Bran meets Jojen? For the first time?
At 0:51 we have Yara (Asha), who as it seems has not been ignored this season.
At 0:52 Brienne hits someone real hard.
At 0:53 more Littlefinger brothel action.
At 0:54 Jaime tries his hand at amputation.
At 0:56 Robb looks like he’s really mad. Karstark execution?
At 0:57 Jon talks to… Mance?
At 0:58 we have Jorah kicking some slaver ass, with some new armor on.
At 0:59 Robb and Jeyne, I mean Talisa, in a sexposition, I mean scene…
At 1:00 Brienne draws a sword in a familiar bridge and fights Jaime.
At 1:02 Jon at Queenscrown.
At 1:03 Stannis sighting, at what could be a cell containing an onion.
At 1:04 some riders. I’m gonna say they are ironborn. The helmets they wear are consistent with what we saw last season, and they carry bows. Some say Ironborn are great archers.
At 1:04 Jon/Ygritte
At 1:05 Brienne cowers before Bart.
At 1:12 extended shot of Drogon.
Some new nice shots and footage. I thought it would be longer though. Let’s see if they release a whole new trailer before the premiere.

I’m sure we are going to get plenty of Ros this season considering they actually set up a plot arc for her in the season finale last year. How they plan on working Ros into the story this year is probably one of my biggest worries for this season. This show has so many characters and plots I don’t understand why they are doing that.

Utiz4321,
I’d love for Game of Thrones to have 2 of 3 sex scenes per episode if they could find a way to do it that didn’t feel shoehorned in or superfluous, wasted moments out of my less than 10 hrs a year of the show.
They could have put that Ned/Cat scene from the first book in the show’s first episode, and it would have felt organic I’m sure, and serve as a nice contrast to the Jaime/Cersei scene later in the episode. But maybe neither of those actors wanted to do nudity and the showrunners were like “Fuck it then, what’s the point of a sex scene without titillation for the audience?” I don’t know.
I’m not opposed to sex scenes in general. They just seem to add ones to the show to fill a boobie quota and that’s why it’s sometimes tiresome.

And that “show them how it feels to lose what they love” line now is said over a picture of Joffrey after Cersei. It looks like they are foreshadowing that Joffrey’s dies this season. I hope he doesn’t, though.

Like some im really worried that they Kill Joffrey this season, well the montage suggests that. Im sure im wrong though.
To close with, after seeing Thoros saying his line whith his sinister face im looking forward to, what i believe, will be the final scene of the season: the Lords kiss.

HBO is kinda greedy in holding on to show the fans trailers and footage from behind the scenes, but this is one of those times i can’t blame them. What they’ve already shown is awesome!
We already know thet David Nutter has directed “The Rains of Castomere” and “Mhysa”episodes, and that man knows how to make watchers bite their nails with axiety (we all remember his episode where Ja’quen kills off a guy after Arya demands it)
Michelle MacLauren has directed “The bear and the Maiden Fair”episode and she can totally kick ass creating very strong atmosphere of despair (she directed Breaking Bad episode where Walter and Jesse are stuck in dessert and Walter makes a car battery out of nothing)
And Alik Sakharov is just epic in his old russian film school style. His vision of Theon arriving to Iron Islands and being humiliated by Balon was the best yet.
All in all i see a very strong directors choice in this season,i think HBO will surpass our expectations. Although i am sure i’ll cry watching “Rains of Castomere”it broke my heart when i read that chapter in the books.

I think that having both the RW and the PW by the end of the season could really go both ways. One of my absolute favorite things about Storm of Swords is how absolutely crazy things get by the end, it’s such a fantastic pay off. If the show could capture some of that, it has the potential to be amazing. On the other hand, in practice it may just feel really rushed (and I think that’s the more likely outcome if they chose to do it).

And naked Stannis? That would have been pretty cringeworthy, like seeing a stern relative naked. I saw his clothed humping as characteristic. Mel’s not his wife, so why would be be compelled to strip down for her, even if he’s so awesomely turned on by the prospect of an heir? It’s not her he finds enticing, but her offer. And he wants to see it done.
WompWompQuote Reply
Nope. I think the TV show is going somewhere else. I think Tywin will discover Shae sending her away to wherever whores go… and Tyrion will kill him for it. Tyrion then spends Seasons 5 and 6 looking for Shae instead of his former wife. The TV audience would relate a lot more to this. The TV audience knows Shae. They don’t know Tysha.

Not sure I see the PW coming this time around; it seems like the 4th season would be better paced if the PW comes in the 3rd/4th episode of next season. On the other hand, one way you could have it this year is if you make it the fade-out OMGWTF!!! moment of this season – the audience goes into full despair mode following RW. Then you wind down – last episode includes Jon repelling the attack at the Wall, Dany getting her army, Bran reaching the Wall and seeing Samwell going the other direction, and just as everything appears to be coming to a relatively peaceful la-de-da close, BOOM. Joffrey. Choking to death. Cersei, frantic, turns and screams for guards to arrest Tyrion. Fade out.

It would be a perfect episode if these two and Dany’s mhysa moment happened.

I hope not. Shae’s betrayal and Tyrion murdering her is such a huge moment for Tyrion and would really help in making him a grayer character. He’s been great in the show, but much less morally ambiguous than in the books. Hopefully we’ll get some re-enforcements and reminders of who Tysha is in the next two seasons and why she’s so important to him.

I really doubt these guys thought to themselves “Lets make the third book 20 episodes, and yet get all the good shit out of the way in the first 10.” I’d guess they want to have time to set up everything and let it play out without feeling rushed.
ZackQuote Reply
rhey,
If Winterfell can burn down without Ramsay than PW can happen without the Martells. I have already suggested that I think they will kill Joffrey and have Sansas escape during her wedding to Tyrion which is why the pushed it back until episode 8. If I’m right about that I wouldn’t be surprised if they fit Tyrions trial and Tywins death in the season finale because all those are great climactic events that work much better at the end of a season than at the beginning. ASOS is a great book but not nearly as effective without these big events at the end and David and Dan know that and I don’t think they plan on giving us some half assed version of ASOS. I think people are going to be really surprised how much ASOS we get this season.
JamesLQuote Reply

I re watched the trailer as you requested. Being a book reader i thought it wasnt misleading at all. This new trailer is misleading (because of the montage like you said). I hope the PW doesnt happen this season. Thats it. People here. We are only expressing concerns here. This season is the one everyone is looking forward to, there a lot of great moments and they need to create the same impact like in the books, so you have to understand why we are getting so excited, or dense as you put it. GoT permits you to be dense.

ebevan91Quote Reply
Greg,
I’ve talked about this before but one aspect of the show that I feel is superior to the text is Shae’s character. I didn’t start out that way, she had to grow on me, but by the end of the second season I was a major fan. In the book, Shae’s betrayal is just like “Hey I’m a whore, it’s my job to fool people like that idiot Tyrion, here’s some info that’ll help me get what I want.” It ended up not being that great IMO.
Whereas in the show, it started off that way but near the season ending up she’s begging Tyrion to escape the city with her because she really does care about him. At least that’s the vibe I’m getting. So her “betrayal” in fucking Tywin is going to be entirely horrible. It could be a thing where she thinks by having sex with Tywin she can buy leniency for Tyrion, and thus the betrayal is mostly in Tyrion’s head.
If it goes that direction and she dies because of a misunderstanding or something….oh my god. Crushed.
ZackQuote Reply
JamesL,
Correction. The burning of Winterfell by Ramsays men happened (someone had to kill the northmen), we saw the aftermath only. The Martells, in my opinion, have to be present at the PW cause it will create tension with the Tyrells. You cant have the PW without first introducing Oberyns (hopefully Alexander Siddig) poisonous character.
The Red ViperQuote Reply
I’ve gotta disagree with you completely.
Season 3 will have some big moments, but you’re basically saying they’ll take every important moment from the third book and cram it into ten episodes of season 3. With what we have confirmed or directly hinted at in S3, it already has more than enough big moments.
No, I think the Martells will be among the new cast members introduced in S4, and that Joffrey’s wedding will happen fairly early (episode 2-4). That will fuel the S4 storylines for both Tyrion and Sansa as they deal with the fallout.
SuzakuQuote Reply
ebevan91,
This.
I could stand behind a season that begins at a breakneck speed and torpedos to the climactic moments of ASoS in six episodes. Then, in the final four episodes, the melancholia that “A Feast for Crows” was meant to evoke can be capitalized on. A reversal of the typical structure of a season by beginning with the 120mph snowball effect we all look for in good television before destroying it all midway through with Tywin’s death, Littlefinger’s reveal, Jon’s election, Arya getting on the ship to Braavos, Dany deciding to stay put in Meereen, and all else I’m forgetting in episode six.
Our episode seven would be aptly called “A Feast for Crows,” with Tywin’s funeral, Kingsmoot, and the introduction of our Dorne players. And until the finale Tyrion would disappear, making Cersei’s fears of him returning palpable to the viewer. The finale would end with Tommen/Margaery’s wedding and/or the burning of the Tower of the Hand, Jon executing Janos Slynt, Tyrion’s conversation with Illyrio and the beginning of his journey, Dany confining her dragons, UnCat, and whatever else may fit.
It’d definitely be a risky, unconventional approach to pacing a season, but I definitely think there is artistic merit to it.
pntrlqstQuote Reply
JamesL,
The three major events of ASoS (RW, PW, Tywin being killed) make excellent season finales. That said, they work better if there’s time for the audience the and story to breathe in between, so unless they want to stretch out ASoS through 3 seasons (3 finales, impossible), they have to use one of them midseason:
At first there was talk of having the RW in eps 6 or 7 of season 3, PW in ep 10, and Tywin in season 4. But as the RW will happen in ep.9 as the season finale we have to assume that the PW has been pushed to mid season 4.
Now, the idea of having all these events happen in the span of 2-3 episodes is just preposterous. The episodes would have to focus only on the events for them to be done well, (as it happened with Blackwater) thus impeding the rest of the storylines (7 or so) to have their own finales, like Dany taking Yunkai, or Jon battling the Wildlings at Caste Black (Ygritte’s death).
Besides, there can’t be Tyrion trial without the red Viper or Jaime present.
Joan CatalàQuote Reply
pntrlqst,
While I think this approach could make for good television, getting ahead of ourselves seems rather unwise to me when even waiting for season 5 to get into most of AFFC/ADWD is basically breathing down GRRM’s neck. I expect only the most minor of things to seep from the latter two books into S4.
It will be interesting to see which direction is the one they take, and how well it ends up working.

Huge turning point – the Bear and the Maiden Fair. That’s going to be really intense, by the looks of it. I wonder how/if they’re going to pull off Jaime’s dream — i.e. when he’s sleeping on a weirwood tree and has the visions of Rhaegar and Brienne w/flaming sword. That’s hugely important to the storyline, in the grand scheme of things (it’s all about Jaime & Bran, rather than Jon & Dany, I’m telling you). In any case, the book does a good job of portraying Brienne’s terror, but it’s really going to hit hard on screen. The look on Brienne’s face says it all. Kingslayer to the rescue.

And also, a question about Tormund. If he goes over the Wall, great. But does this mean he might get killed in the attack from the South? I think Jon will kill Orrell. But if Tormund doesn’t die (he has an important arc afterall later on), will he be hiding out somewhere or go back north of the Wall via the road that Bran and company take?

Any of your possibilities are indeed feasible, as D&D have not been shy about condensing what may be considered minor details/characters to make the show more interesting and understandable. Let’s face it, if EVERY one of the hundreds of characters in the books were included in the TV show, it would be going on for decades and probably not hold your attention as well as the current show does. Only in carefully cutting and pasting of characters and story arcs has the show been able to work on tv, and they’ve done quite a good job of adaptation IMO. So yes, any changes could happen and that’s probably what makes it so interesting for us readers to keep watching since we don’t REALLY know which way D&D will play things. IMO, it appears that Tormund is taking the place of a different wildling that went over the wall with Jon, and it’s possible he’ll not survive the attack from the south. That would make it even MORE difficult for his people to want to go through the wall in a few seasons when they’ve killed Tormund – so it makes sense to me to kill Tormund so his people are even MORE resentful of the NW later. We’ll see.

I would have liked to see some more sexiness involving Melisandre. I have a thing for Ms. Van Houten… and all the other actresses on the show… (who am I kidding?)
Whatever the level of sex and salaciousness, or lack thereof, this season looks awesome.

Seeing Rast covered in blood at Craster’s Keep gave me chills for some reason. That is one of the many scenes that shocked me when reading Book 3 (though it doesn’t involve Rast in the books, but rather other naughty black brothers).
And finally Brienne takes that ridiculous armor off (too bad we have to watch her getting the crap beat out of her in order to do so)! I want to see all that muscle that the lovely Gwendoline Christie apparently put on for the role.
And is it just me, or are Robb and Catelyn back in Winterfell for some reason? That definitely doesn’t happen in the books, and it doesn’t make a lot of sense given how far Winterfell is from the army that Robb is leading. Guess we’ll have to wait and see.

They don’t need Oberyn for the wedding, really. Not at all. He doesn’t do anything in the wedding.
And if you think that 10 episodes of Tyrion’s trial is too much for S4, just think
Episode 1: Tyrion alone in the cell, interaction with other people of KL, Oberyn arrives
Episode 2: A few scenes of Tyrion and Oberyn. Martell and Tyrell rivalry explained.
Episode 3: Trial begins, some people declare against Tyrion
Episode 4: Varys and Shae betray Tyrion in the trial and is condemned
Episode 5: Oberyn explains Tyrion he will fight for him
Episode 6: Oberyn VS The Mountain
Episode 7: Tyrion gets revenge of Tywin
Episode 8-9: No Tyrion, Cersei freaks out looking for him. In those episodes we’ll see the climaxes of ASOS at the Wall, Mereen, etc

I said it before, but if you click on the episode the cast list appears, and besides the known starring cast, Gwendoline Christie, Rose Leslie and Ciaran Hinds are added! I’m not sure though if this is the final thing.
My opinion: Well it was obvious that Gwendoline was to be upgraded to starring since Brienne is always alongside Jaime, and the same for Rose Leslie, Ygritte being very much connected to Jon’s. While Ciaran Hinds, he is the King-Beyond-the-Wall… they talked so much about him, it was a certainty he will be starring, and not recurring.

For all those still defending the PW this season, let me show you how will Episode 10 will work (or rather not, really). Just look at how many things have to happen in that episode even before you consider the possibility of the PW:
-Multiple reacions to the RW, the important ones being Sansa, Arya (possibly getting back Needle and stabbing Polliver like hell), Tyrion, Joffrey, etc. There may even be some more.
-Jon fights the Wildlings at Castle Black. Ygritte dies.
-Catelyn is found by Thoros and revived.
-Dany takes Yunkai (Mysha)
-The closure of all other storylines (Bran, Davos?, Jaime)
Now, the PW would take at the very least 30 mins (and even then it will look rushed) counting the ceremony, feast, jousts, murder and escape. The event deserves to be done well, not be rushed so that it could be fitted into the a narrow timeframe at Ep10.
There’s no way all of it fits into one single episode, even a slightly longer one.

If not, she could be shipped off to Braavos in Ep 5/6/7 and not hear of her again until Ep10 (S4)/Ep1(S5) when she arrives in braavos.

So much awesome stuff: Scaling the wall, Jaime losing his hand, Drogon flying over the sea, and my personal favorite, the trial by combat between the Hound and Beric Dondarrion and his flaming sword. Talisa will actually be at the Red Wedding in the show seeing as George has said she is flat out not Jeyne.
Maybe her story in the books is not leading to anything important so they feel she can be killed off in the show this season?

I really hope they have Arya show up at during the RW and getting hit by the Hound as she runs to find her family. I remember actually believing he killed her for a while and hope that they use that as a cliffhanger for the episode. I think it will be a great way to end for people who havent read the book. The deaths of Cat and Robb will be huge cliffhangers, but i think ‘killing’ a fan favourite (Arya is always second to Tyrion when i ask people who they like best) right after those two will be an even bigger way to end. Fans of the showwill be shocked and pissed about Robb and Catelyn but then taken by suprise when Arya is hit with the axe (with some camera trickery) and be even more pissed :)

So awesome it hurts.
- Thoros saying “The night is dark and full of terrors”. Looks like the prayer between him and Beric before the duel. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE keep the Hound’s “This cave is dark too, But I’m the terror here.” Badass Sandor lines are always welcome.
- Mel! Beautiful and mysterious as ever.
- Night’s watch burning a dead body, before the Mutiny. Mormont is there.
- Tyrion and Cersei = Gold
- Jojen’s introduction :)
- Joff with his crossbow again.
- Yara! Could be at Balon’s funeral.
- Brienne headbutt looks so badass, she’s going to have a great year.
- Jamie looking depressed :(
- LF’s brothel red room and a new lady friend.
- Joff on the throne.
- Jaime being held down on the floor, no prizes for guessing what this is.
- Robb looking badass in the rain, probably on the way to chat with Karstark.
- Jon talking to (I presume) Mance.
- Jorah taking out the guards. Maybe Yunkai guards because we’ve seen the shots of Dany and the wall of flames (Which presumably is from Astapor) happen during the day time. Love his new Dragon themed armor.
- Robb and Talisa trying to make an heir.
- Jaime V Brienne. Can’t wait.
- Tyrion and his axe in his quarters, who’s leg is next?
- Jon in the rain about to kill some poor man.
- Stannis and Shireen.
- Horse riders. Hard to tell who they are…
- The lord’s kiss.
- Hell yes! Brienne vs the Bear.
- Longer look at Drogon and he looks awesome! Very likely the opening Dany shot of season 3.

I am figuring it is scene that is going to build on the friendship between Sansa and Shae and foreshadow Littlefinger and Sansa’s futures. I do think Littlefinger is going to be the one to get her out of KL when the time comes. I’m okay with that. Anything that gets Littlefinger out of the brothel and into an actual plot is okay by me

To all the people saying they don’t want to see UnCat this season :
I just don’t get it. Yes, us book readers had to finish the book to discover lady stoneheart. We had a lot of time between the RW and her death. But if she is seen in s3, how would it “remove the surprise and wow factor” ? In fact, don’t you think that if we have to wait a whole year, the majority of the viewers won’t care about the fate of Catelyn anymore ?
I think that seeing her in s4 won’t have the same impact. When the RW airs, all the non-readers will go mad. Seriously, I think it’s going to be worse than Ned’s death.
The week before episode 10 airs, non-readers will be completly crushed.
What better way to end series 3 that UnCat opening her eyes ? The reveal that she is still somewhat “alive” will actually give hope to the viewers, and not at all diminish the impact of the RW. It’s not like it’s going to be in the same episode. A week will pass between ep9 and 10.
Think about it, the show needs to end on a supernatural cliffhanger, like the dragons and the walkers army.

Zack,
That’s a good point, it really is. I just went back and watched “Fire and Blood,” (I’ve been watching past episodes out of order on purpose, just to get at some of the context that I may have missed in the past and view the episodes for their strengths alone), and one of the things you notice is just how little truly happens. Danys brings out the dragons, but what else happens? Jon Snow leaves and is dragged back in a great scene by Grenn, Pyp and Sam. Arya sets out going north — and for those who haven’t watched this episode in a while, there’s a great moment that in hindsight looks even better. Yoren says something about not traveling with “this lot,” and motions to the cage, where Rorge, Biter and J’aqen are being kept. Well, its pretty obvious that the 2 guys in the cage meant to be Rorge and Biter are 2 different ones from the men who were eventually cast in those roles. But crucially, the third prisoner is completely hidden under a hood. That’s a brilliant little thing – they had to cast an actual actor for Beric Dondarrian, but J’aqen, until season 2, is not witnessed at all. Great stuff.
Anyway, other than Mormont telling Jon he’s taking the Night’s Watch out (a great great GREAT scene), very little other than Danys “happens.” So yes, to move PW to Season 3 would indeed be overstuffing things.
A few other points on things we could see that might contribute to seasons 4/5:
–What of Osha/Rickon? For now, they’re all together. Makes sense as the audience has grown attached to Osha, and Natalia Tena’s a fine fine actress. GRRM has even stated that he’s “excited” to write her part for WoW. It’s possible he clues in D&D a bit or the book is released before Season 5, and we can have a split that comes up that involves Osha and Rickon facing perils on the way to Skagos.
–What of Myrcella? The scenes involving her awful injury when Arrianne Martel attempts to have her crowned is only alluded to, and can easily be expanded when Season 4 rolls around.
–What of Cersei/Maergary?
–What of Yara/Asha? Clearly she’s going to be in this season. That means if we’re getting the Kingsmoot in Season 4 we’re going to need a character we have some connection with to start out here, and she’s a good choice on that. So you add in 3 more Greyjoys, and then Yara-Asha becomes our point of reference. We may see a bit of “I’m looking for my brother” type stuff in there as well.
–Will we get more J’aqen H’ghar? At the end of Valar Mourgolis he says something crucial that is different from the book if I remember. He tells Arya to show the coin to any man in Braavos and say that phrase, and “He will appear.” Does that mean J’Aqen will be the one to escort Arya to the House of Black and White and serve as her stern mentor there? It’s certainly possible. That could help extend and deepen that relationship, in the same way the Tywin/Arya conversations replaced (and strengthened, at least for the sake of the show) the stuff at Harrenhall instead of having Arya just get abused as a kitchen wench. Same is likely to happen with Tormund Giantsbane standing in for the Magnar of Thenn. That should strengthen the relationship with Jon Snow which is critical later (I imagine that they won’t kill off Tormund, but have him survive somehow – and the uneasy but cordial relationship he has with Jon will stand as a counterpoint to what ends up being outright mistrust by Mance Rayder.)
So yes. While the trailer gives you some misdirection that suggests there could be a big OMG surprise at the end of Season 3 with the PW, it seems like either Lady Stoneheart or the Mysha moments will be enough at the end of that season. Season 4 already has a great potential OMGWTF moment to end that season: “Only Cat.” You can easily drag out the trip by Littlefinger/Sansa all the way to the Vale, followed by the jealousy of Lyssa. So end of season 4 has Tyrion escaping and killing is father, and then the last moment is: “Only Cat.” Fade out.
Basically I’m in agreement with everyone who believes PW would not come in Season 3, and should not. If it does, ok – but it still feels like based on pacing that it should be more like Season 4 episode 3-4 range.

Ep1 or possibly Ep2.
It depends how close they stick to the books.
If they want to stick to the fact that Illyrio provides the ship for Dany then Selmy will be in Episode 1 and will meet Dany in Qarth. If on the other hand Dany buys/hires the ship herself (with plunder from Xaro’s house) then it’s more likely imo that she won’t meet Selmy till they dock in Astapor (presumably he still saves her from an assassin).

As much as I loved the first trailer, this one is even better with pacing, editing and inclusion of all of the key characters. Only disappointment is that it’s 79 seconds shorter than what I was expecting. Then again, it will be fewer moments during the actual show when I’m taken out of the narrative with the thought ‘This was the scene/line from the trailer.’
Though I understand the arguments against it, I will be disappointed if the season doesn’t end with ‘Uncat.’ It’s perfect for an episode with the title of “Mhysa” (mother) and may be what the D&D comment was about. “Pleasantly Surprised and Horrified in Equal Measure.” It’s supernatural and gives the fans something to chew on for 9 months. (and buy the books if they want to know more)
Not sure what supernatural plot point/cliff hanger they’ll use for the end of S4, though. Perhaps something from Feast/Dance? Any ideas?

To those noticing that Thoros is in the background of the Melisandre shot…
Noticed this too, but don’t get too alarmed folks. This might just be trailer trickery.
It’s reasonably common practice for green-screen scenes to be given different backgrounds based on the right colour palette if the actual CGI background isn’t complete at the time the trailer is being put together. This has been done with trailers for Star Wars and Lord of the Rings in the past. If Melisandre’s scene was from a green-screen shoot, they may have just stuck her on top of a BWB blurred shot because the colour palette is similar to what her finished scene will look like.
…
…
…alternatively they’ve just blown the BWB/Dragonstone plots into a whole new ballpark.

This is what I’m talking about. Dany’s “mother scene” is the perfect way to end the season, as she is shown as a liberator to thousands. A speech about bringing freedom to Essos AND Westeros would let the Unsullied audiences feel assured they have reached a watershed moment. Dany may be the hope they are looking for to end this Lannisterian scourge of immorality and straight up killing the good guys. I also believe that this moment could even proceed with a hint towards Cat’s resurrection, eyes, mouth opening…fade to black. Season 4′s modus operandi is set: Retribution.
Given a choice I would gladly sacrifice the reveal of Cat as Stoneheart earlier on than see a rushed PW.

After watching this trailer and reading some of your comments, I’m really afraid they will kill Joffrey this season. But, more than that, I am afraid they might change the circumstances of his death, since I really can’t imagine doing two big wedding scenes (a costly thing to shoot, with loads of extras and stuff) in a single season.
I hope I am VERY wrong about this and that they:

If UnCat is this season, they have to do the epilogue scene. The viewer has to know that this isn’t Cat, this is definitely not Cat.
If they just show her opening her eyes, people would be like “Omg his mother’s alive again, great, more nagging and worrying”
If they show her hidden beneath her hood and a BwB member asking her “What’s to be done with these two Frey’s etc…” and she turns to camera all badass looking and says “Hang them. Hang them all.” Cut to black. Viewers would be like “Holy shit wtf? She’s alive and she’s ruthless and badass! Wow!”

You think Tyrion is actually looking for Tysha? The whole “Where whores go?” is not meant to be taken literally. Tyrion is not scouring Essos looking for Tysha. The repeated commentary on the action is more a reflection on his general situation than evidence he’s actually searching her out.
I will be very shocked if Shae lives out season 4. D&D love the story for its darkness, and so does HBO. Whitewashing Tyrion’s character would not be unexpected with anyone but HBO, but this is what has got to be interesting for Dinklage, D&D, HBO, etc. Though we are sympathetic to his plight, Tyrion’s actions can be as morally bankrupt as many of our most hated characters. Dinklage is going to love the scene where he strangles someone he loves.
AlanQuote Reply
Nick_Scryer,
Yeah! I like the way you think there sir. This is the mother shorn of maternal warmth and compassion reduced to an instrument of cold vengeance. This would be perfect. It would leave most of the viewers satisfied to see some of those responsible for the RW receive justice. This should lead in from the “mother” scene. It would also be beneficial to show one of the Freys recognizable from ep 9 on the gallows. This should slake viewer thirst for villainous blood until early season 4 when Joff is abruptly killed of in the second or third episode.
Joshua TaylorQuote Reply
My opinion why UnCat this season:
1: Beric’s arc needs to end. I came to realise his whole purpose in the books was to describe the effects of the resurection, so that people will come to realise that this will happen to Cat also. After Arya leaves BWB, Beric does not appear anymore, until Cat’s reappearance. What about the actor? his story is really left in the air… he needs conclusion.
2: the show is not the books. we read the RW and UnCat in one single day. with your scenario, she will appear for more than a year later. The books had a great timing and worked beautifully the revelation, but for the show it doesn’t work. You say, yeah well is the epilogue so it should be in S4 finale… timing doesn’t work the same!
3: Day and her Mysha scene, I see it as the king in the north scene in S1. after this scene they can actually cut to UnCat, being the finale. Altough I really like Dany, I don’t want another closure with her. She is great, but the atention should be dispersed to other characters as well.
AdrianAegonQuote Reply
Melisandre,
Yeah I can’t see them having three weddings three episodes in a row but I’m wondering if they may just have a Lannister/Tyrell meal in Ep10 at which they are celebrating the death of Robb and Joff gets poisoned.
The only other option I could see them having the PW in this season is if they make Episode 9 a Double Wedding. Yes it messes around with the timline a bit but I could see them cutting from one Wedding to the other throughout the episode and then to really throw the cat amongst the pigeons they could show Joffs death first. Viewers will be OMG so that’s the big Ep9 event only for Robb and Cat to be killed off minutes later.
MormegilQuote Reply
I still lean to the idea of no PW this year. That event sets so much in motion. It propels the plot forward for Tyrion, changes the power structure dramatically, all of those things. It’s a Season 4 event. The more I think about it, there’s plenty of great stuff for Season 4 if PW happens then:
–Arya’s arc – I bet she steps onto the boat for Braavos in Ep 10 this year, and we pick up with her quest to become a Faceless Woman in Season 4.
–Cersei/Maergary: Lots of rich stuff there in the political scheming between these two, but the bulk of this is saved for Season 5.
–Littlefinger gets Sansa out of Dodge. “Only Cat.”
–Bran passes the Wall and goes with Coldhands far, far north.
–Jon becomes Lord Commander and consolidates his power. Mance Rayder is captured and “killed.”
–Jamie returns to King’s Landing and copes with the death of his son and father, and his split from his sister.
–Brienne’s journeys through the Riverlands.
–Shae’s betrayal.
–The Red Viper.
–And the season ends with Tywin’s death, and the OMG moments are a pair: “Only Cat,” and Brienne getting a noose around her neck. Fade out.

I think several of you are right on the money about having the PW early next season will shock and delight many millions across the world!! Then we will see the trial.

This is really bold and sure hope they don’t do it. It would completely soften the impact both weddings would otherwise have on viewers. Honestly it would be rather distasteful for HBO, something like Shakespeare meets Buster Keaton. Seriously. They can’t do that.
On the other hand, the meal celebrating Robb’s death on the next episode seems very plausible, and that’s exactly what I’m afraid of. They would have to leave out the two dwarves – which are important for Tyrion’s story down the road -, for instance. And the whole tension of having Joffrey die in his own wedding in front of half the kingdom.
But, as someone already pointed out, the episodes might as well be edited and ready by now and there’s nothing we could do besides sitting and waiting.

I have read a lot of comments on the trailer and many of them talk about either the RW or the PW. But what about Sansa and Tyrion’s wedding? Everyone knows how important it is to the story.

I am wondering who will be coming on the show for next season?
The Red Viper (Oberyn Martell)…
Ellaria Sand…
Mace Tyrell…
Randyll Tarly…
Euron Crow’s eye…
Victarian Greyjoy…
Aeron Damphair…
Taena Merryweather…
The Kettleblacks…
Strong Belwas…
Wyman Manderly…

I actually really like the idea of having the PW at the very end of the first episode of season four. It would allow for a nice build up throughout the first episode of the season, would give a great impact and “wow” moment to the first episode’s ending, and would really propel the rest of the season forward. It would also give both weddings some narrative breathing room.

I strongly prefer the talisa. In the show and her and robber story arc then westerling and the books version. We got to see them actually start a relationship, that I didn’t think seemed fake I think they have great on screen chemistry. And talisa. Is way more intereswesterlin jeyne westerling in the books. And we got to see an awesome field amputation.

The show problem was it made Robb look like he had an odd fetish. Falls for her cutting a guys foot off then goes for it when she tells him about her brother nearly dieing.

I agree with you about UnCat and show viewers will get a great glimpse as to how that particular power/magic works with Beric. Not to say they couldn’t bring him back for an episode next season, but I wouldn’t mind the UnCat reveal at the end of this season. I think it would work better this season rather than have to wait a year and kind of remind viewers of Beric and Thoros power
NancyQuote Reply
Hahaha, that’s awesome, I never thought about it that way before.
And I agree with you, Joey – I think that Talisa works much better as a character on television than Jeyne would have. Jeyne works just fine as a book character because she’s essentially a plot device to get to the RW, but one that makes sense from a character point of view. She doesn’t take up a lot of page time, doesn’t disrupt the flow of the novels in any way, and rarely appears at the center of the action.
But if you put her on screen, she would probably seem flat and uninteresting, especially since TV Robb is more developed. I think that’s why Talisa was given a more substantial back story, and I agree that in general she’s more interesting than Jeyne. But she also takes up quite a bit more time in the plot (in a medium that already has less time for it) and I think that many viewers just didn’t find her character interesting enough or vibrant enough to really warrant that. I think the writers wanted to make the plot line more of a love story instead of Robb just being sort of dumb, but the love story is pretty generic.
That said, I don’t hate their scenes together by any means. I think they’re fine, just not all that inspired.
KatieQuote Reply
Dan,
Tarly and Manderly can easily wait until season 5. Belwas, Taena, and all but one of the Kettleblacks are likely to be cut. The rest I think will be in.

D&D can always introduce Strong Belwas to the TV viewer in some pitfit scene Dany has to witness. I haven’t giving up hope on Strong Belwas or the scene of him dueling in fromt of castle walls and wipping his ass with that dudes cape.

He brings desperately needed levity to an oftentimes too serious story, IMO. He’s Dolorous Edd for Essos. I want that scene too! They send out some tough looking warrior on horseback, Belwas just stands there, pulls the guy off the horse as it charges him, and destroys him. Wipes ass with cape.
What a badass, lol. I want it in there.

Am I the only one who is disappointed by the ‘extended’ trailer? Everyone seems to be so excited, but the trailer is almost identical to its previous version!
Also, as whole, the trailer isn’t really that exciting compared to trailers from previous seasons. It is mostly a compilation of some of the characters’ faces and expressions…The phrase ‘it grew on me’ was written a lot about it by fans, and I think that it just means that after 10 viewings or more people got used to it.
This season has to the potential to become the best season of the series, due to the material it is based on, but I think the marketing this year has been poor.
AngelosLQuote Reply
AngelosL,
It says it’s an extended look. It didn’t lie. The first trailer was basically a cut down version of this one. And if their marketing has been terrible, why has this been the most popular promotional video ever posted by HBO? Them keeping us wanting will be pretty good for business.

Why can’t Beric’s arc end even without the UnCat reveal this season? Viewers will be introduced to resurrections with Beric and Thoros. So it won’t come out of left field when they see Stoneheart. We never see Beric give Cat the kiss of life in the books and there is no reason to see it in the show. It would completely ruin the reveal of Stoneheart. The audience should be as shocked as the Frey guy was when he sees her. The only way that happens is by not showing the kiss of life, just like in the books.
Tyrion PimpslapQuote Reply
Weird semi-off-topic theory, and hopefully I’m not too late to comment:
Does anyone think — or fear — that Bran and Jon might be the only Stark kids in the show given the warging power? The direwolves are so downplayed with the other kids that I feel like, for instance, Arya’s Nymeria dreams would only confuse casual watchers. They certainly remember Lady’s death if only for its symbolism, but I’m not sure they’ll recall Arya had a pup that she chased away. And I don’t know if the casual viewer is going to get on board her being a little assassin on top of some weird magic psychic animal girl thing.
Also, I figure people might ask: so wait, where’s Rickon talking about this stuff (though the Reed kids meeting the littler Starks together might get Rickon talking about any dreams/weird powers he possesses)? Where’s Robb talking about it? Sansa, before Lady died? Etcetera.
I dunno. Not trolling or anything, I just wonder if they might be simplifying the magic for the common viewer (kind-of like how Targaryens do seem to have special powers in the show, whereas I believe GRRM ruled out Dany surviving Drogo’s funeral pyre as a one-time miracle thing in the books). Like to hear if anyone thinks this might occur or if I’m just bullshitting. Don’t mind either way.

Of course I know Tyrion is not literally searching for Tysha. But you get my point. At first I was convinced that Shea was Tywin’s spy. The “Truth or Dare” game implied she was not an ordinary whore. My guess was that perhaps Tywin was holding Shae’s parent’s life over her head to make her spy for him… But now, I believe D&D wants to limit Tyrion’s murder to Tywin. We’ll find out soon.

No way the PW happens this season. They’ll save that for episode 4-5 next in season 4. It’ll be a perfect set up for all the events surrounding Tyrion’s trial and it’s aftermath.
I have no idea how they’ll end season 3, but the final scenes of season 4 should be: Tyrion killing Shae and his father, Littlefinger and the moon door, and the big Lady Stoneheart reveal at the end. BOOM. Best episode ever.

I’m pretty sure we ll have a second baby shadow. If they don’t incorporate this storyline this season there won’t be a lot of developpement in Dragonstone. The producers want us to be interested and used to them. So that when Stannis arrives at the Wall in season 4, we’ll be like ”whow”.

I don’t think that even the TWD finale will affect the nmbers much with so much excitement around the premiere. Maybe the numbers would be affected if Thrones were on network TV and used typical ratings numbers, but seeing as it’s HBO… not so much!
HBO may be a bit slower in the amount of material released or the date promos are released, but they are doing a much better job this year at getting the videos onto YT at a much faster rate! Last year myself or a few others managed to uploaad trailers or featurettes before HBO released the videos online. This year HBO has been very timely…. so far!

IMHO, Joff should die at his own wedding. It would be more faithful to the books if they just rushed the Sansa/Tyrion wedding and then give Joff his wedding in the 2nd or 3rd episode of the 4th season, since Oberyn Martell was a part in the poisoning conspiracy. Killing Joffrey at Tyrion/Sansa’s wedding is going to compromise a lot of personal plot points, especially the talk between Sansa/Margaery/Olenna and Tyrion/Oberyn. That’s just my 2 cents.

It is almost silly to think that the PW will happen in Season 3, but to think that Tywin will be killed in Season 3 is just ridiculous!
Those 2 events are the foundation of the King’s Landing story in Season 4 and if rushed forward to Season 3 there is no Season 4 narrative in KL.
Thankfully, this should put at least one of those two scenarios to bed!

Here’s why the story is about Jaime & Bran. Because they’re the central characters that set the story in motion. Everything revolves around Jaime pushing Bran out the window.
Also, because Jaime is Tyr — Azor Ahai — and Bran is the Fenrir Wolf — the Great Other. Firstly, GRRM is fascinated by perspective and false protagonists (which Jaime is). With perspective we see transformation. We see how a young, innocent boy, whose been shit on his entire life, could turn against humanity. And how an asshole like Jaime finds redemption. And consider, one has a much tougher road to hoe than the other. Bran is traumatized. Read the history of any serial killer, and you’ll find they more often than not had a traumatic childhood. So, that’s a pretty big deal to get over. But all Jaime has to do to redeem himself is find remorse. That’s much easier. So, in other words, Bran is seriously messed up. But Jaime will get over it.

Its probably just one of Stannis’s bannermen (maybe Axell Florent). I dont think its Thoros, there is no way they will have time (or a proper reason) to have a scene between Thoros and Mel when Thorus needs to be with brotherhood and Arya. I really hope the Brotherhood feature a lot this season and there is a bit for them to do so i cant see Thoros appearing anywhere else besides with Beric and the others. And i think Melisandre is going to remain with Stannis in dragonstone for a while

I don’t think the gems are behind the thinking. Purple is a color traditionally associated with royalty. And because of the naming convention of the RW, people choose a similar name for a like event in which misfortune befalls those involved.
ZackQuote Reply
Ah, the panickmongers are at it again. There will be no PW this season and Shae will be killed by Tyrion, just as in the books. D&D actually wanted to do this tv series because of the horrible event the Red Wedding. They haven’t skipped one important moment, nor changed it in such a way that it would have big consequences for plot deviation (from the book that is). I’ll never understand the need of this yearly recurring ritual, or complaining, that this or that event will be changed completely and it will ruin the show. I think the creators have earned a bit of leeway, with how they handled Ned’s execution, the Battle of the Blackwater and many other scenes.
