A new fan web series called School of Thrones launched its first episode just a few hours ago (you might have heard of it already if you follow our Tumblr account and tweets).
Some of the people behind it were involved with other successful (web) projects such as A Very Potter Musical, The Lizzie Benner Diaries, and Hey Ash Whatcha Playin’.
Hear Me Roar: I liked this first instalment. Some good laughs, it definitely has potential … I’d say it’s a must for all GoT fans – who as the target audience will of course appreciate the jokes and references most. New episodes every Sunday at noon PST, follow their YouTube account to keep updated.

It’s cool to see Ash from Hey Ash Watcha Playing, a web series I think I learned about through a posting on here.

Brienne – on the varsity team in four sports.
Varys – Guidance Counselor
Grenn, Pyp, and Dolorous Edd – full schedule of shop classes.
Jorah – Crushes hard on the new girl but can’t get out of the friend zone.

I don’t know about child murder, but didn’t you see Jon and Dany at the end?

Stannis should have been a math teacher. I can just see him failing his students for a single addition error or something. But he’s already in this so I say:
Alliser Thorne – jerk algebra teacher who terrorizes all the kids in his class.
Robert – alcoholic parent longing for his days on the HS football team.
Robin Arryn – kid with inhaler, crushing on Sansa.
Ygritte – the school’s environmental activist/resident hippie.
Mormonts – girls’ hockey team.
I could go all day.

I didn’t laugh, but it showed some promise. I’m sure it’ll get better once things have settled in.

I watched the first minute of this and said “this has potential” then i was looking into it because I recognized Ash from Hey Ash, Whatcha Playin’? (which is mostly meh but has had a few funny moments) and then I saw the guy who played Ron in A Very Potter Musical (which is totally awesome – see what i did thar?) is playing Theon? SOLD.
The into is amazing and the rest of the episode was quite good and I’m officially in for the long haul.
stevelabnyQuote Reply
It was worth watching for the poster that said “Loras for prom queen” alone. I lol’d pretty hard at that. And fyi I ship Renly/Loras pretty hard but it was still funny.

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. It’s clearly meant to be fun and goofy, not some serious work. I laughed at Hipster!Stark and the Greyjoy swim team.

I watched two mins of it and wanted to peel my eyes out. Just yet another reason for me to be worried for humanity. But then again I think twit, er is for the bottom half. Guess I grew up in a time where I did’nt need to know what every smuck thought about something. Because most of them are just that smucks. Myself included.

Hey, anything Thrones-related floats my boat! This will tide us over nicely while we wait for March 31st, though I wouldn’t say no to a photo shoot or a trailer or three. :-)
These two “reviews” were hilarious to read back-to-back!

I always have mixed feelings about things like this. Inevitably, some of the jokes will be funny, but other things will make you cringe with how tacky they are.
I did think their title sequence animation was amazing, though.

Sometimes it makes me sad how so many people are completely incapable of letting go of their cynicism and enjoying something just for the silliness of it. Then I remember I am on the internet and I stop caring.
Point being, I enjoyed it. The books/show have fans passionate enough about it to spoof it. At no small effort of their own. It’s a fun an light interpretation of a fairly dark story. What’s to hate?

No, no, no… Thorne has to be the asshole gym teacher! :-P

Quite frankly, I expected this to be annoyingly silly, but it turned out to be a clever parody of the HBO show and really entertaining to boot. Jon & Dany looking longingly into each other’s eyes; Jon, Dany, and Tyrion in a scene together right from the get-go; the peach; the deliberately bad wigs. Clearly made for fans, by fans. Hope it continues to be this much fun!

Not funny or cute. I hope they don’t make anymore because this gave me so much second hand embarrassment. I was cringing all the way. sorry.
HelloJelloQuote Reply
David,
Please don’t put words in my mouth. Typically when there’s this much effort put into a production of this sort at least some of their ideas will be good. Usually not all of those ideas will be good, but almost always a few of them will be. Honestly I found most of this one pretty bland, aside from the great job they did on the opening credits. I thought the idea of taking “the old way” and reinterpreting that as “vintage” was fairly clever – credit where credit is due – but the rest of it seemed to focus too much on just setting up tropes than on actually being funny — and nobody watches something like this for the drama.
MRRQuote Reply
Yeah, I have to agree with you.
Everyone has different tastes but…this was bad. Like…real bad.

Was pretty sure I wouldn’t like this (US high school stuff not relevant to my interests and all) but actually did like it. Lol at the Greyjoy swim team and Renly/Loras cosplaying Kirk/Spok on their prom poster.
zambi76Quote Reply
Is bad acting a requisite for parodies? Don’t think so.
Let’s see where this goes; there’s quite some room for improvement and creative ideas, but so far, I’m not impressed.
GorreanQuote Reply
Did not expect to love this, but I did. It was silly in a well-done way.
And is it me, or is this version of Renly a lot closer to the books than the TV show version? (Not a slight against Gethin Anthony’s performance, just an observation. :) )

EleanorQuote Reply
While I do wish these kids used their creativity for something a little more original, I must admit I liked “Our way is the vintage way” and Stannis and Melisandre handing out leaflets. I’m not a big fan of parodies in the first place – and especially not of modern-parody-retellings taking place in american high schools.
But that said, I’ll probably watch the second installment as well out of curiosity (and to see how they treat Arya).
EosQuote Reply
These things can work really well – just look at “The Lizzie Bennet Diaries” which has been an awesome adaptation of “Pride and Prejudice”. Also, very addictive and am quite sad there are only about six episodes left.
Whilst this one is not perfect, it does have strong potential and once they settle in, I can see it becoming good. Westeros in a High School? Awesome.
Bashful82Quote Reply
LOL that was great! I’m usually not that big into parodies, but that was nice silly fun.
And the Starks as hipsters was pretty hilarious.
I wonder if Arya, Jaime and Cersei will show up.
The Winter RoseQuote Reply
I’m not into parodies either, but I liked it. :)
zodQuote Reply
Oh, now I see my babys are not actually cosplaying Kirk/Spok, it just looked like it, because Loras’s grey sweater vest looks kinda blue on the poster and I mistook their stag-pins for communicators (I’m such a dork).
On the plus side Loras is totally riding a rainbow-colored bike with a flower design bike-basket in front.

Hear Me RoarQuote Reply
I didn’t think it was THAT bad, I was expecting way worse. It had a few moments that were amusing enough (considering my current obsession and withdrawal from GOT!) I think its saving grace was that it is really short, so whether it’s good/bad/ok, it’s not a huge time investment.

Renly was great! The PEACH!
Maester MurksQuote Reply
Sorry for my post…I’m very thin-skinned when it comes to certain things. It’s so very off-topic anyway. I thought this was well done for an amateur production, cute and silly, and more knowledgeable about the source material than many other parodies (like the aforementioned peach, which only exists in the books). Plus, I’m a fan of the Starkid Potter musicals, so it was cool to see Joey Richter in there. Anyway, I think the show has potential and I’m curious to see where it goes from here.

I didn’t think there was much of a crossover between GoT and Glee fans. This news saddens me.
(EDIT)
After watching more than the first 30 seconds (which isn’t easy) it does get a bit better. Like GoT meets mediocre episodes of community. Which ultimately brings it to an above-meh rating in my book.

Eh. It wasn’t terrible, and I got a couple mild chuckles, but on the whole, I didn’t find it that funny. But, hey, other people seemed to like it, so I guess it’s just a matter of taste.
