Iron Throne Blonde Ale, get in me

Iron Throne Blonde AleBrewery Ommegang and HBO were kind enough to send me a sample of their Game of Thrones beer aka Iron Throne Blonde Ale. I cracked open a bottle and enjoyed it while watching “The North Remembers”.

My three word review: it is delicious. I’m no beer enthusiast, but I like to think I know a good beer when I taste one and this is quality. It is crisp, refreshing and a little bit sweet. It also will get you pretty drunk. TODAY has a slightly more eloquent review.

The beer is scheduled to officially go on sale on March 31, but there have been reports of it popping up in stores already. You can use Ommegang’s store locator to find places near you that may carry it.

Big time beer enthusiast and big time Martin enthusiast, I can’t wait until I get my hands on this. Last year we did a lot of mead and mulled wine for our Feast of Thrones day, this year it will have to be this.

That store locator on the Ommegang website is useless. Says the Iron Throne ale is not available anywhere in the US and when I try to find just stores that sell Ommegang beers I get a bunch of bars and hotels.

I don’t think the locator has had the Iron Throne Blonde Ale info added to it yet. And it is possible that there aren’t any stores near you that sell Ommegang, because I get quite a few when I search.

    Winter Is Coming,

Tried it again with some specific beers rather than the general Ommegang beers option. Still get mostly bar and hotels when I know of two stores not on their map that sell Ommegang. And if the Iron Throne info hasn’t been added yet, then why is there even a choice for looking up that beer? Again, useless store locator.

    Winter Is Coming,

If you’re right then this will be the cheapest beer Ommegang has ever made.
They are in upstate NY and all of their beers I have tried are amazing but they are very pricey.
I am just outside of Boston and bigger stores have wide selections of Ommegang but no Iron Throne Blonde yet. Its probably easier to find in NY.

I just tested the locator out using a bunch of NY zip codes and the only place that it comes up as actually being available is in Cooperstown, NY – probably at the brewery itself.
It isn’t supposed to be out until the end of the month so the locator is probably working correctly and Iron Throne ale is listed on there because it is available in at least one location.

The closest city of any size only has 66,000 people and its an hour drive away from the brewery…and they don’t have it yet either.

    Card of Doom,

And yet I’ve found a couple of online liquor stores (Binny’s Beverages, Total Wine) in various states that are selling it just by doing a web search. So far only in store pickup not in my state. I’m going to have to call around to liquor stores in my city.

It’s like they don’t want me to have it! *sad face

Ommegang lists a dozen locations that sell their products where I live (Savannah, GA), and one is a place I frequent, so hopefully they will carry the Iron Throne Blonde Ale. I should call and request it; I imagine that sort of consumer demand would help to have it distributed widely.

Ommegang’s beer finder is still populating. It takes a day or so once a store or bar stocks up for their information to reach the database so please keep checking back on the site to find a location near you.

I tried looking at their site’s and I found plenty of Ommegang but no Iron Throne for pick up in Norwalk, CY (closest to me).
Maybe you searched a different way than I did

Either way my point is that the chances of finding it are somewhere close to 0.
It is cool that they have a locator on the site that I think will be very useful once the actual release date hits.

    Card of Doom,

I’d be up for some wine, especially whichever vintage Cersei was enjoying during Blackwater. If a wine could get a person through an attack from Stannis, it must be decent (or just very strong)! : ) Blackwater Bordeaux–a striking, full-bodied red with a touch of wildness.

The brewpub near where I live has two GoT themeed beers on tap, the dragon queen and the halfman. Dunno if they’d get I trouble for copyright issues so I won’t identify them. ;)

Tried them both a couple weeks ago. The dragon queen was really unique, very floral, not too hoppy, sweet and almost like a mead. It was 11% ABV, i think. and came in an 8oz glass. The closest thing I’ve had to it is the Midas touch from dogfish head.

The halfman was a not particularly interesting blonde ale, lightly flavored, with little hops.

I have this awesome Beer store right in my neighborhood called The Craft Beer Outlet that sells imported beer from all over the world, in addition to a ton of domestic microbrews. seriously, the place is awesome, you can buy mix-n-match six packs, single bottles, cases, etc. and they have EVERYTHING, I mean EVERYTHING. I stopped in after work because I wanted to pick up a few different Irish beers for tomorrow, and to ask if they were going to stock The Iron Throne ale. So I walk in, and the conversation goes like this:

Salesman: Hi! Is there something I can help you with?
Me: Yeah, I wanted to ask if you are going to be carrying this beer….
Salesman: (cuts me off) Game of Thrones Beer? yes, we will, we’re getting it in next Thursday.
Me: OMG, yes, that was what I was going to ask you for! how did you know…????
Salesman: Because you look all black metal in your Dark Funeral jacket and I could just tell you were into Game Of Thrones…and don’t worry, we’re going to have plenty of it, so come back on Thursday!

don’t know how being a metalhead tipped him off to being a Game Of Thrones fan..but he really freaked me out, haha.

Anyway, if you live in the Philadelphia area, here is the website:

I did notice yesterday that this store did have a BIG selection of Ommegang beers, if you care to venture there. And I still can’t believe I actually have this store right in my neighborhood, and don’t have to go downtown or travel far to acquire the beer that I’ve had the great fortune to try abroad in my many travels! I can tell you that 20 years ago, it was A LOT harder to find such great selections of imported beers in this city, but these days there are so many pubs and craft stores popping up that are specializing in carrying large selections of beer on their everyday menu, so yeah, it HAS turned into a great beer town!

Just picked up several bottles yesterday in my local craft beer shop. Haven’t tried it yet (We will crack them open tomorrow night when we get together for our weekly game of thrones board game party), but the guys at the beer shop said they liked it. The bottles were $7.99 each, which is in line with their Abbey Ale pricing in most places. However, the alcohol content is only 6.5% which is very low for Ommegang brews. That may explain the cheaper price, I don’t know!

Now, if I can just find a set of thoat awesome Game of Thrones Ommegang glassware, that would be great!!
