The past couple days people have been spotting a new Game of Thrones Season 3 promo airing during commercial breaks on regular TV and now HBO has gone and released it online. It is called “War” and despite being only 30 seconds long manages to include a bunch of new footage.
Winter Is Coming: Some very cool shots in this one. Check our Tumblr for all the screen caps. 16 days!

A woman thinks you are right, that the man on the horse with a bloodied sword in the dark racing through the fiery scene is the Hound cutting his way out of the encampment at the Twins in the aftermath of the RW, and that Jorah and another swordsman are taking the place of Strong Belwas and Arstan near a dock foiling an assassination attempt on Dany- just a guess. That would be a way of giving Jorah some ass-kicking time and putting off the intro of Strong Belwas until Mereen? A guess, nothing more.

I assume that’s from the leeches scene. Maybe they will change it, and Stannis won’t mention Balon at all. It would not be a bad thing to do IMO since I don’t think we will see Patrick Malahide again in S3, and they will delay his death scene or make it happen off-screen.

They might have cut Stannis’ line off from there since Balon isn’t a super major character in the show; the promo’s tension might have been ruined a bit.
Alternatively, no one sees Balon as a legitimate threat. Yet.

For two years we’ve been hearing about the great hordes of the Dothraki, the great host of The North, the great armies of Stannis and Renly and Tywin…
and we’ve never SEEN any of them beyond a smattering of extras easily counted in the dozens.
With all the CGI they’ve used already, you’d think they could show us a couple of divisions worth of virtual troops… and horses! Glad to see at least we’re being introduced to the Unsullied as a sizeable unit, big enough to change everything for Dany. Long time coming.

Indeed, Asha was in the trailer. But it’s not like they never wrote new scenes for the show that weren’t in the books. Plus I don’t think there was any confirmation, or even rumors, about Malahide (Balon’s actor) being back on set this year. But hey, it’s just my opinion, maybe you’re right. Time will tell :)
the other guyQuote Reply
Lin Beifunk,
I think it could be something Theon related. She says in book five that she thought Theon was dead, so maybe they set this up somehow like say running into one of Theon’s men like black lorren, maybe even kill one (I think giving Yara a badass kill would seriously improve her cred among the fan base). I feel like it makes more thematic sense to push Balon’s death to season four. From what I remember it was a fairly chronologically separate event that could pretty move to a different place in the book
As for the white walker, I guess I didn’t think it looked like the thing from season three, maybe more like the thing from season one I guess

This isn’t really true at all. I’m currently re-watching the first two seasons on a brand new TV (55 in.), and a lot of the scenes with the Dothraki (such as the wedding, and traveling shots) have quite a few digital characters added in, but it’s often in the background and obviously not on the same level as that shot of the Unsullied at the beginning of this trailer. Blackwater also had a few shots where the number of individuals was actually higher than I had originally thought, but again, not on the level of what we’re seeing in this trailer.

Did you guys catch the the maturity and swag in Dany’s voice and body language? Just that 2 second clip of her voice and face were enough to show me.
Last season Dany didn’t do much but boot stomp. This season our Khaleesi is going to be amazing! I can’t freaking wait!!!
She’s growing up and her “babies” as D&D stated are becoming scary weapons of mass destruction that everyone is afraid of except Dany…
I know I say this a lot but I only say it in regards to this show… Epic!!!
This is the kind of show that as a high school AD&D playing geek I would only be able to dream possible.
Only thing left that I would like to see in a trailer is Greywind. After all, he has an important role in season 3. Dany is not the only one that has a supernatural pet at her side.
ArthurQuote Reply
The way Stephen Dillane delivered his line in the promo is chilling. Is it just me, or does Stannis look considerably older here compared to last season? No one is immune to the passing of time, of course, but the character appears to be a few years older although the actor has only aged one year since he filmed Season 2. It wasn’t mentioned on the show, but perhaps we’re finally seeing the premature aging that book!Stannis endures after the creation of the shadow monster?

Yeah I mean that one line was delivered with such power and confidence and swag…
Last season mostly every scene with Dany made me mad because she was just acting like her brother but in fairness she really didn’t do much in book 2 anyway. Her demanding ships and boot stomping got really old. At the end of season 2 she thanked Ducksauce. Now she knows not to ask or depend on others. She has to use her wit and what she has to gain power and in book 3 that’s what she does. No more boot stomping or begging.
Looks like D&D want Dany to blossom in season 3 and become a leader with swag, wit and confidence. That makes me happy! =]

Joshua Taylor,
The season 2 version of Dany wasn’t that different from what she is in the books, especially in ADWD, IMO. Jon , on the other hand, was treated like a fool, which he isn’t. Not trying to complain or take away from the excitement of this great preview, I am just surprised at how so many people feel that Dany was really out of character in S2. I agree her scenes were a bit repetitive, but the sense of entitlement and brattiness was definately there in the books too.
Tyrion PimpslapQuote Reply
Tyrion Pimpslap,
I think Jon was pretty foolish. Again and again people had to point the obvious out to him that he failed to grasp on his own that happened in the books and the show.
Tyrion pointing out 99% of the new boys to join the nights watch never even holding a sword before. Even before that Tyrion had to shake Jon into reality just who his brothers of the nightswatch would be.
Sam had to inform Jon why he wasn’t being picked as a ranger. That he was going to get groomed for command.
Jon doesn’t start growing up and opening his eyes until he gets trapped and the Halfhand forces Jon to kill him. From that point on Jon goes on an eye opening journey that transforms him into one of my favorite characters.
It’s really amazing how at the end of season 2 D&D bring both Dany and Jon to that threshold. Now in season 3 we get to see Dany and Jon step through that threshold and shed the skin of their once naive state of mind. Seasons 1 and 2 were only Dany and Jon Snow’s launching pad… =]
ArthurQuote Reply
Arthur,
I agree that Jon was naive in the books too, but he was still intelligent. Never once do we hear someone utter “You’re even dumber than you look” to him. Quorin selected Jon to go on the ranging in the books for a reason. Mormont chose to groom him because he felt he was a leader. Season 2 went too far into making him look like a complete fuck up, IMO. But that’s over with now. Lets just hope that they do a better job with the character from here on.
Now, on to my favorite part of this video, Jaime vs Brienne! I really hope they emphasize that Jaime is malnourished and in chains. And I hope they keep the running dialogue in the scene as well. Jaime’s POV in ‘ASOS’ is my favorite in the entire series. I believe the show will be able to do it justice. If they do, Jaime should skyrocket in popularity among TV viewers.
Tyrion PimpslapQuote Reply
Judging by the faces of Robb and Catelyn in Harrenhall and that stark banner, those are obviously dead Stark soldiers. But I still wonder why Robb is in Harrenhall…with Catelyn. It’s probably before Riverrun but isn’t that a huge detour?

Tyrion Pimpslap,

Jon was naive and possibly unworldly, but not foolish in the books.
I too hope they do the Jaime POV justice as it is one of my favorites in the series aas well!
I can accept not shaving his head (even if I really would prefer it), but I hope they find a way to make him look like death instead of the golden boy he has been. The beard and dirty clothes only do so much IMO.

Didn’t you see the shots of Stanis’s fleet? The troops landing? The counterattack by Tywin Lannister and Loras Tyrell? If that wasn’t epic I don’t know what was?!?
It is on par and better in many ways than any of the epic shots I saw in “ROME”, “Band Of Brothers” and “The Pacific” The fact that such a monumental episode was brought to screen beggars the imagination and we were lucky to get it! I ask…did you even bother to look at the featurette regarding the work behind bringing that episode into being?
After two seasons of “Game Of Thrones” I realize how spoiled we have become as fans, I mean HBO has gone all out on this show. Of course it is a critical and financial success, a money maker and a boon in merchandising, licensing etc., and yes the fans are fiercly loyal,,,but if this was anyother network does anybody seriously think that we would have gotten this level of quality and detail. Just ask Starz and those involved with making “Spartacus: The War Of The Damned” and take a look at the CGI shots of Rome there, or Crasus’s legions marching….
For heaven’s sake we have a travelling GoT exhibition, how many shows can boast about something like that? The last time I saw anything close to what HBO has done with GoT, was then I went to see “The Lord Of The Rings” exhibition more than a decade ago…
Just saying….

I was thinking about Stannis, he is my favorite character next to Dany, but i wonder what non-readers will think about him after this season. Why is it a strong opinion? Because most disagree? On many non-game of thrones fansites, people tend to agree with that sentiment (Generally that Emilia Clarke is outright bad). I’m not sure if I agree she is bad exactly, but I certainly think she the weakest (out of a strong cast mind you).
But even if it is a strong opinion, why exactly does it show that those with such opinions are the least capable of judging talent?

Astaroth,
Arya is my fave character (mainly because of Maisie Williams) and i really hope she has a few scenes per episode this year. I loved her story in book three and hope she has a lot of screen time with Beric, Thoros and The Hound (plus i hope she shows up at the RW and gets knocked out by the Hound, i would hate it if they just decided to have her not get anywhere near the twins and just find out next season that they are dead)
Then again, there are a lot of other characters who havent really featured in the trailers (Bran being the main one) but it does worry me about Arya. She is one of the most popular characters on the show so i hope that the only reason they arent showing much is because they want to keep it a secret or something)

While Emilia is not my favorite on the show, I think she is doing a decent job with Dany, esp. as the part has been aged up so much. Also, she has the unenviable job of working with those CGI dragons. I was just watching Season 2 where they are in the desert and the dragon is riding on her shoulder as she feeds it, and her eyes are looking back but obviously not at exactly the place where the dragon is – it has to be hard to act a scene not knowing if you are looking at the spot on place where your “baby” has not even been placed yet.
The scene of Jaime stealing Brienne’s sword leading to the battle on the bridge looks terrific. And I like that they have not been showing too much Robb and are doing their best to keep the RW under wraps. I wish all the magazines would quit touting “Weddings!” Although some folks may think it refers to Joffrey’s wedding – or Sansa’s once that plotline is introduced.
I hope they do a good job reintroducing Walder Frey. Viewers have to remember him and pretty much despise him even before he does his nasty work…
I was a little worried that too much Brave Companions would be cut, but Locke looks pretty good – I hope they will be as scary and as unforgettable as they were in the books.

Last year Arya had more screen time than everyone but Tyrion and she has appeared in 19 of 20 episode (only less than Cersei and Tyrion) so i hope that continues this year. Arya is just too good to not feature much and her story this year could be just as entertaining as last year. Everyone loved her with Tywin and Jaqen and i think people will really like her with Beric, Thoros and the Hound. Plus, Maisie has amazing chemistry with just about everybody so im hoping for some one on one scnes between her and Beric (similar to the Yoren scene last year)

Alan,
Personally the only stock that I put into acting talent is my own. There is too much subjectivity involved for us to decide who is talented and who is not. For example I thought Jessica Chastain was deserving of the Academy Award for Zero Dark Thirty. But my friend says she is bland and is one note. I argued about the character she was playing, the subtlety or the emotions etc. He chose Jennifer Lawrence, whom I thought was excellent in SLP, based on the range of emotions she displayed. But I found the earth that Chastain was mining much richer.
So I dunno, personal taste accounts for a lot when it comes to judging the quality of acting. As for Emilia I give her a B + so far, she has had winning moments and not so winning moments. When she brats it up or gets angry I think she gets in the wrong headspace (a balance of entitlement and desperation needs to be found) but when she’s happy, girlish or cold and distant and imperious she pulls it off well. Alot or her acting i see in her body language and face. I kind of see her improving as an actor correlating with Dany’s growing maturity.
The worst actor in the series to me has to be the one who played Ser Dontos, I understand why they scrapped his character.

For those worried about Locke’s “Vargoness”, Noah Taylor does have a lisp and based on the episode synopses we may hear a certain gemstone, so eloquently pronounced.

I read somewhere that the reason that the show cast Emilia Clarke was because they had her audition on the full range of Dany personas – from the frightened teenager being molested by her brother in S1E01 to someone who intentionally manipulates slavers and willingly uses her dragons to melt faces and burn a city. I have been a card carrying member of Team Targaryen for 16 years and what I saw from her in that trailer (as well as at the end of last season when she calmly locked Xaro and Doreah in a safe) is going to make for an awesome season this year.
ETA: Also, she got this part fresh out of drama school so cut her some slack. I agree with folks who are saying that her acting skills will continue to improve right along with her character.

Joffrey I want him dead too, aww Robb no I don’t want him dead…who the $%^& is Balon???” They’ll reintroduce us to Balon’s character in the earlier episodes to familiarize people with him, whether we see Balon or we just hear people talk about him remains to be seen

If you want to be refreshed…
It’s the whole plot regarding Melisandre’s dark magic. 3 leeches each representing one of the false kings Balon, Joffrey, or Robb. The leeches are burned in Melisandre’s fires, hence sealing the fates of those characters. One of the craziest scenes in the series. I would probably be a R’hllor follower in that world. His followers are the only ones doing that kind of thing. The other gods are all basically absent.

I cannot think enough right now to leave a thoughtful comment. All I can say is, OMG I CANNOT FREAKING WAIT!!!! So excited for this season, and it looks so BADASS! SPAZZZZ!
There. I feel better now. I’ll be fine as long as I refrain from watching any more trailers or teasers, lol.
I am so very pleased that we were all lucky enough to see this project being realized. (Last time I felt this way, besides with GOT S1, was when LOTR: FOTR came out.)

It says the 18th but does that mean it will be online on the 18th or the following day? Really looking forward to that now :)

It’ll be on demand the 18th. Since the series finale of Girls is on tomorrow, I think it’s safe to assume one will air beforehand.

I think the bit with Jon snow at the end is the battle between the nights watch and wildlings as he got hit with an arrow I thought?

Kinda surprised no one has mentioned this before. The scene at :21 that appears to be Robb walking towards Walder Frey, has Talisa or Jeyne, or whoever she is, in the background between Catelyn and Edmure. I think we can confirm that she’ll be at the RW, which I think actually ups the drama.
I don’t have a copy of ASOS handy, is that line from Dany in the book?

That’s Kastark, most likely.

What do you want to bet that D&D change the Karstarks to some other name to “avoid confusion” with the Starks?

Why would they? They already used the name several times in season 2.

Nope, it’s not from the books.
There’s a very cool book line that’s sorta similar, though: “‘…woman?’ Is that meant to insult me? I would return the slap, if I took you for a man.” I hope she uses this one too. :)

Anguissette1979,
I made a bet with a friend for 50 bucks that the PW won’t go down this season.
If I lose not only am I out of 50 clams but the show will have compromised its integrity for the sake of some satiating the vengeful Stark loving butthurt Unsullied. D & D will be able to pull off the RW if they can convince the Unsullied by doing proper justice to the Jon Snow and Dany storylines. That is the challenge they face.
Joshua TaylorQuote Reply
I hope we hear Stannis include Balon Greyjoy to that line during the episode.

Joshua Taylor,
At first I didn’t understand ur comment but now I know that ur calling the PW season 3 shippers “unsullied” lol. The PW really has no place in season 3. What’s the point of Davos calling out Melisandre on only 2 king deaths instead of 3 if we get all 3 deaths this season?

I have no problem with Emilia. Most of the professional reviews Ive read agree with my judgment and praise her depiction of Dany and those opinions are more credible to me. I believe she was snubbed for an Emmy in season 1. A lot do not like Dany so I can see the bashing. Also, in season 2 although she did not have the best material, she carried desperation and pride to a good balance. Yeah like how dare she get angry when the spice king had been nothing but condescending to her? How dare she get mad when her babies were stolen and Irri and some of her other people were murdered in cold blood? How dare she? Speak all you want, but to me she’s a great Dany. Commanding and regal but naive.
LuthienQuote Reply
Meanwhile I have a problem with Kit’s wooden acting chops and his fixed serious sullen face lol. Tbh i dont think he can show Jon’s growing intelligence or depict Jon the Lord Commander. He’s good at playing clueless and naive though. To me, he is the poorest in the show. Oops
LuthienQuote Reply
Gaius Baltar,
I agree. She is amazing. I don’t get what some people are accusing her of. I feel she could pull an award winning performance and same people would still bash her no matter what. i’m not gonna be surprised if those same people dislike or hate Dany.
LuthienQuote Reply
Tom O’ Sevens,
I wasn’t calling the PW season 3 worshippers ‘Unsullied’ I was referring to their argument that the Team Stark Unsullied would be pissed off with the RW and that D and D would kill Joffrey off in episode 10 as a means to satiate their anger.
On that note, if angry Team Stark non-reader fans see Joffrey die in ep 10 than many of them may quit the show. I’ve heard people say they are only watching the show to see Joffrey get what’s coming to him. Better to kill him next season to bring those viewers back whose anger might have healed over hiatus. Remember that some people who initially read the books gave up after the RW…

Luthien,
I think Emilia is doing a good job, she has one of those presences that overrides her relative inexperience in dramatic range. I think her and Kit are about equal as performers.
But again, the judging of acting talent is VERY subjective.
Joshua TaylorQuote Reply
I still cannot forget the fact that she was snubbed for an Emmy nomination for her season 1 work! Argh. She was so great especially in episode 9 and 10.

I agree, but I tend to trust those who breathe and live reviewing tv and movie/performances 24/7 or those who are actually prominent in the acting field. To me they are more credible than an opinion of a regular person. I still have faith in Kit. Maybe he’d surprise me in S3. I do love his scenes with Ygritte but that’s about it for now.

Luthien,
I agree, people who study film do notice subtleties in a performance that the average person cannot. I find a lot of people don’t like actors because
1) they remind them of someone they know whom they don’t like
2) they don’t like the actor’s mannerisms, facial tics, hair tugging, eyebrow wagging etc
3) they don’t find the actor attractive
4) they don’t like the character
5) they don’t like how the actor is portraying the character
6) they don’t get what the writer/actor is trying to do with the character
7) they actually have a good standard of acting they compare them to and the actor does not meet it
8) they don’t like the style of acting ie: naturalistic, method, theatrical etc
9) they don’t like the actor’s personal life/politics etc regardless of the performance.
10) Some men are harder on female actors and some women are harder on female actors. Vice-versa.
Joshua TaylorQuote Reply
Joshua Taylor,
Exactly! You listed good points. And some of those definitely apply to Emilia’s Dany. Tis a known fact that Dany divides people which is excellent because it means she is a nuanced and complex character and not a piece of cardboard. GRRM has mentioned how he thinks some people may hate a character only because he/she is a threat to their favorites. Lol. Another thing is I think not a lot of people get Dany’s character. For example, Ive read some criticism about how dead her eyes seem to be in some scenes. They call it bad acting, I call it intelligent acting from Emilia. People forget that she’s been abused, emotionally and physically by her brother. Her being dead in the eyes perfectly fits her psychological profile imo.
LuthienQuote Reply
Luthien,
‘Fixed sullen face’ sounds exactly as the Starks are described in the books. They are all long faced and sullen. I thought Kit was great in season 1 and had no problem with his acting. He’s not as talented as most of the other actors, but like Emilia, this is basically his first on screen gig. I thought the writing had more to do with him looking foolish than Kit’s acting. He does have great chemistry with Rose and his scenes with Ygritte should be great.

Joshua TaylorQuote Reply
Tyrion Pimpslap,
Yeah I get that Jon Snow has a melancholy air about him and is sullen, but to me that’s about it. Same face most of the time. He is like a sad black labrador who stares into the sky whispering “Uncle Benjen”. I wish I can see more complexity. I wish. I still hope he’d pull off Jon the Leader.

When judging a performance, why the heck should any opinion but our own matter? It’s an opinion, it has nothing to do with credibility.
To quote Ricky Gervais: “If someone thinks something is funny, they are right. If someone thinks that same thing is not funny, they are right. There is no argument.”

Jacob_M,
It’s MY OPINION that those professional reviews are more credible than what I read/hear from regular people because they actually know, breathe, live entertainment 24/7. It’s their living. Like I live nursing.
Like David and Dan and Nina Gold doing auditions to find good GoT actors for parts. Their opinions matter to judge actors who might be perfect for a part. Obviously, they’ve done a great job in the casting.

It’s like saying you should trust a hater of a character/actor to give an unbiased judgment on his/her performance over a professional critic who is simply making a living.
It’s why we have official award shows.
IvoryQuote Reply

If anybody can judge good acting talent, then what do we need critics for?
LuthienQuote Reply
Ivory and Luthien,
Ginia Bellafante of the New York Times, one of those professional critics that you referred to, claimed that:
“Game of Thrones is boy fiction patronizingly turned out to reach the population’s other half”
Now personally, I love Game of Thrones, but you say that my opinion is biased while hers is simply a statement of fact, unbiased by personal feelings? I guess I was wrong, I just thought that Game of Thrones was a great TV series when clearly I was wrong? I find it not credible, but incredible, the idea that a professional critic is unbiased, while that rest of us are not. As for the reviewers themselves being credible, i.e. giving their honest opinion: I guess if you’re a critic and want to continue to receive advance screeners and get access to stars for interviews etc, it might be in your best interest to be a tad diplomatic in your reviews at times. Your relationship with the industry is a bias.
I also thought that one of the reasons for professional critics was to let people that haven’t actually seen a movie, play etc know if the movie/play might be worth catching. I’m thinking of watching this new movie that’s comming out this weekend…but is it any good? I’ll look in that paper to see what the critics say. Critic X say that the movie is really good while critic Z thinks that the movie is totally un-original featuring uninspired acting. Who do I trust? They are both professional, but I know that my taste in movies is closer to that of critic Z that critic X so I opt to watch another movie instead.
…a second purpose of critics is of course to affirm my own view. I really love Game of Thrones – I don’t need a professional critic to let me know that it’s a really great TV series. But I do like reading good reviews of things I already like, affirming that yea, I’m right, this really is a great show.
Jacob_MQuote Reply
Jacob_M,
Of course, people have different perspectives and taste. Most of the critics love Game of Thrones. What I meant was in majority.
I fucking love Breaking Bad and think it is great. Majority of the critics concur with me.

Jacob_M,
Biases can taint a judgment. That’s a fact. Opinions are not facts. You can agree with one opinion and disagree with another. What was meant was I can’t trust a biased opinion. I’d rather believe an opinion of someone who does not have personal investment.
IvoryQuote Reply
Ivory,
Exactly.
I’ve actually read people bashing Emilia’s acting and they turn out to be Dany haters. Some of the unfair criticism stems from character loathing tbh.
So should I agree with them? No.
We need people who are skilled and trained at judging acting talent. JFC.
LuthienQuote Reply
So forgive me for thinking professional critics are more credible because of untainted judgment. Forgive me for believing that they are more credible because they literally LIVE and BREATHE tv and movies 24/7 so are more trained in judging acting talent than a regular person. Specifically, I was referring to the matter that professional critics are less likely to make biased criticism about an actor’s performance than an average person who hates on the character the actor is playing. Same goes with fans who love the characters and tend to be more biased with their actors too. Me for example. I’ll say this though. I’ve read a lot of critic raves for Emilia’s Dany and of course that affirms my belief, which is great.
