  • Queen of Thorns,The Brotherhood, and Jojen and Meera all make their debuts tonight. Should be fun.

  • Never mind telling me the time when it airs because we’re all off-kilter with Daylight Savings Time, but can someone tell me how many hours should I wait if I want to try and watch it alongside you all, or at least follow the chat? Thanks!

    (Hint: it’s 11 PM here)

    4.

  • I’m expecting this episode to feel a lot like the season premiere, in that it’s still putting the story lines of some of the characters into motion. Obviously we’ll be seeing Arya, and the gang at King’s Landing, but I wonder if we’ll actually be seeing Theon in this episode. I hope so. Also looking forward to meeting Orell and seeing more of Jon & Mance, as well as getting some Jaime & Brienne action. Basically I’m looking forward to all of it. Don’t think we’ll see Dany or the Night’s Watch this week, but everything else should be great. Also interested to see Catelyn “assassinate” her character (kidding, of course; I have no issues with how she has been portrayed in the show, despite it being different than her character from the novels).

    Just four more hours…

  • Thoros, Olenna, Orell, Jojen, Meera… Lots of new characters introduced in a single episode. Could be tricky for non-readers. Maybe a few Tullys as well?

Due to so many new introductions to the show, I think this episode will continue to have the introductory/catch-up feeling that had last week’s episode. All reports say it is better than Valar Dohaeris though. Fingers crossed!

Also, with the only knowledge bestowed on me by trailers and the preview, I’m betting the cliffhanger of this episode is Jaime/Brienne being captured. Also betting Daenerys has little screentime if any.

  • Arya, Bran, Jamie & Brienne – tonight’s episode is going to be awesome! However, I think I’m most looking forward to seeing the Queen of Thorns. I have not seen Dame Diana Rigg before in anything, and from all of the good press she’s gotten, I think she has me the most curious!

  • This one might set a new record for most storylines/places we go to/scenes. Hope it doesn’t feel too rushed.

@Winter Is Coming: can you tell us how you liked it?

  • Re: Theon — He is in tonight’s episode.

Buzzsugar.com posted their recap of the episode this morning and it must have been an accident because I can no longer access it.

  • No nudity in tonight’s episode? That’s a relief, now I don’t have to quickly change the channel when my mom walks in.

  • Only read if you read the FaB spoilers about the 4 first episodes. He told that Shireen and Selyse didn’t appear in any of these episodes, I’m the only that think that is a little strange? For sure in the next three episodes we are gonna see Dragonstone, but why HBO isn’t showing them? /

  • I’m hoping for a lot more Jon Snow although I heard his story line doesn’t really take off in the first few episodes. Anyway, I’m very curious whether we’ll see more action in this episode or if it continues slow.

  • ebevan91,

    No nudity? That’s outrageous.

Looking forward to seeing Arya and Jaime again :D Gods, I hope they don’t show Dany in this episode. That would be great.

  • Good to hear about the lack of nudity.

I couldn’t care less about sexual content in the books, but in the TV show it always feels like a cheap way of using up screen time; precious screen time that could be better spent on… well, pretty much anything from the books.

Oh and let’s hope we see Reektonight!

  • I’m beting the cliffhanger been a Theon scene, IDK if the Jaime and Brienne capture is a “:O” moment to end an episode

  • First, a review of last week.

    I was re-watching Season 3, Episode 1, and I thought I’d share my random thoughts…

The first scene with Sam was better with surround sound. (My wife went to bed early last week so I used the TV’s speakers. Today she’s out and it’s just me, a bottle of 12-year-old Elijah Craig, GoT, and you guys.)

The whore with Bron reminded me of a young Geena Davis — the Victoria’s Secret Geena Davis. I hope we see that whore again.

I feel bad for Salladhor Saan — that he didn’t get to “f**k” Cersie (yet).

The scene that cut from Talisa to Tywin was reminiscent of that Talisa conspiracy video that I watched online after last week’s episode. Shit! Now I have to watch the whole Season 2 over again. Clear my calendar for next week. More bourbon!

I want a wax seal for my office.

The Ros whore may be sacrificed in favor of that Bron/Geena Davis whore.

My surround sound came alive with the music of dragons!

Natalie Dormer is so hot that if she were a Targaryen they’d call her “Margaerion.”

    Classic line: “…the metal work…”

The little girl in Astapor may have been an assassin from The House of Black and White. That would be interesting.

  • I’m the only that understand most of the sex scenes? For example, the Ros and Pycelle scene in S1 is amazing! That scene “only” shows that Pycelle is always faking to be an old and slow guy, but actually he is quite alive and knowing the things!

I think Dany says “the Warlocks” after the assassination attempt. It’s hard to hear. And the girl has blue lips like the Warlocks.

that was not really a sex scene. We are talking about S1E7 and S2E2 kind of material here

  • GeekFurious: M-O-O-N spells Meek which rhymes with Reek. #mixingbooksup

That’s two Stephen King references in one week. Cool. James Hibberd of EW.com likened the creepy little girl assassin in Astapor to the two creepy little girls in (the Film version of) The Shining.

  • Michel,

Depends on how its being used. If its being used for the sake of plot advancement and/or character development, I’m all for it. Examples: Tyrion in Winterfell, Ross + Pycelle

If it’s just there for no reason while using up limited screen time, I’m against it. Examples: most of the brothel scenes with Petyr

  • Michel:

That video blew my mind! The facts are in our faces and we didn’t realized it! I hope it’s true.

    Link please?

  • Michel:
    coronaking,
I’m 99% sure that it’s about a letter announcing the “deaths” of Bran and Rickon or Hoster death.

I think that too, but I always love when the episode title relates to several story lines (like in “Garden of Bones” or brilliantly in “A Golden Crown”).

  • Mike Chair:
The first scene with Sam was better with surround sound.

Completely agree — it’s the sound, perhaps more than anything else, that makes the scene so foreboding. By comparison, I re-watched the episode using computer speakers and was very underwhelmed.

  • I really hope we get to see a lot of Arya in this episode. I hope it isnt just one scene. I can see them leaving Dany out of this episode (and maybe Davos/Stannis/Mel) so i hope they feature my fave character a lot :)

  • I’ve said this before and I will say it again. However I know it may have to be done a lil different to make for a good television viewing. I also know Brienne already did something similar and Sir Barristan just did at the end of last episode. I still think it’s cool to see major puzzle pieces being put into place and giving to POV characters.

All that being said, I’m really looking forward to hearing the Reeds make their pledge to Bran…

“To Winterfell we pledge the faith of Greywater,” they said together. “Hearth and heart and harvest we yield up to you, my lord. Our swords and spears and arrows are yours to command. Grant mercy to our weak, help to our helpless, and justice to all, and we shall never fail you.”
“I swear it by earth and water,” said the boy in green.
“I swear it by bronze and iron,” his sister said.
“We swear it by ice and fire,” they finished together.

  • If seeing some boobs is troubling you more than beheadings, stabbings, people getting limbs cut off, eviscerated and (hopefully) flayed, you should re-examine your sensibilities. Just saying.

  • Really can’t wait to get a glimpse of Theon and the guy that will make Joffrey look like Barney the dinosaur

  • Does anyone else thing that Thoros will kind of absorb Greenbeard’s role from the book, maybe even Lem’s role too? I also wonder if there will be a Harwin type character for the Northern connection.

  • Steel_Wind,

I’d say the Tywin line refers to the RW. Most of the other ‘facts’ can be explained by a number of different reasons. For example: Talisa writing in the middle of the camp. If you’re writing a report on the Stark camp you don’t do it in the middle of the day surrounded by passing soldiers. As for her knowledge of Westerosi customs it’s something that can be picked up fairly quickly and easily. The only decent argument is her lack of accent.

  • Joan Català,

The problem with chalking Tywin’s line up to the RW is that there is no factual basis at all for ever hoping that such a thing might ever occur, or could occur, at the time Tywin says it. That only happens well afterwards. So the point is, was Talisa introduced into the camp as a honeypot to provide the necessary facts for the RW? An interesting theory.

  • Arthur,

I wouldn’t hold my breath on that pledge being included. It was already pretty corny in the books. I can’t even begin to picture on screen.

  • In regards to this whole Roose change thing, sending in some nurse girl to get Robb to fall in love with him so he betrays his vows is far too contrived. Think of all the variables it relies on over which the Lannisters/Boltons have little to no control. I really hope this theory doesn’t turn out to be true, its far too ridiculous for my taste

  • HellFell,

Yep yep. There are only a few really bad scenes like that. Most of them are unfortunately pretty heavy on the sexposition but still halfway decent as far as being worthy additions to the plot. I will be happy if we don’t get terrible brothel scenes this season. Sex scenes, boobs, ass etc is inevitable and not a big deal. Some of them are even among fans’ most anticipated scenes. Lord’s Kiss FTW.

  • Joan Català,

Well if you look at the frames showing the letter she was writing it is clearly describing the size of Robb’s forces, the direction he is traveling, another host marching along the coast, he will arrive at week’s end, etc. (2:40-2:45 second mark), I never saw this freeze framed before now, it means Talisa is a spy, but for whom. It may not be Tywin, but Doran instead. Which would be cool indeed if it were the case either way.

  • So… tonight’s arcs shall be :

    – Arya.
    – Bran.
    – Jaime / Brienne.
    – Reek.
    – Sansa (and the Tyrells).
    – Cersei (and the Tyrells).
    – Jon.
    – Sam.

Which would leave out of this episode :
    – Dany.
    – Davos / Stannis / Melissandre.
    – Tyrion ?

  • It’s confirmed we’re getting Theon in this episode, and that Ramsay is posing as someone sent by Asha/Yara to rescue him. Sandor will also be in this episode, and he recognizes Araya straight away, revealing her to the BwB.

  • coronaking,

How can that happen in episode 2, when Danny isn’t in episode 2? She will be in episode 3 and 4. In 3 she will buy the Army, and probably sell one of her Dragons. And in episode 4 we will see Dracarys.

  • tysnow,

The frame you talk of is of Arya reading the letter (after that she keeps it, Amory Lorch goes after her and is killed). It is not Talisa reading. Note how there is no music when Talisa talks, the letter appears with background music, and it is gone as soon as the frame changes to Talisa again.
It is a montage to try and trick you into thinking this theory is true.

  • kevin1989,

In case you forgot, Dany sells Drogon immediately before “dracarys” and the Sack of Astapor — the time between the occurrences is a minute or two, tops. I’m thinking Episode 3 will show her bargaining with the Great Master(s) and understanding when they insult her and agreeing to the deal, as it is in the book. Then Episode 4, of course, will contain them meeting for the exchange and the results.

  • Omar Brown:
Trying to waste time till the premiere? Watch the best GOT meme evar!

    http://www.wicgeeks.com/t53209561/thrones-patricks/

    It’s all I ever wanted.

That Hodor one, though…some things you just can’t unsee!

On tonight’s episode–I can’t wait to meet the Queen of Thorns and see Arya again, as well as the Brienne-Jaime double act.

But I’m most looking forward to Catelyn’s monologue about Jon Snow–I know it’s going to be a fierce point of contention, but I am so, so exceedingly curious as to how it’s going to play out. I may end up loving the scene or absolutely hating it, but am such a glutton for any hint or insight about the relationship/shared past between these two, book or show version. It fascinates me.

  • Based on a preview written over at westeros.org, it seems that The Hound may appear in this episode!! YAY! :D

  • I think they should show more of Astapor and the story of the Ghiscari, and that stuff for the non-readers. The view of the city in episode 1 from Dany ship was amazing

  • I am supposed to be focused on my own writing, but instead I’m surfing and jonesing for showtime. Really want to see how the BwB plays out. Not sure I buy the Talisa conspiracy, but I guess we’ll find out-and that’s half the fun isn’t it?

  • finally watched larry’s review and guess what? i think he was mostly on point. yet predictably, that kicked a hornet’s nest of negative sentiment around here.

re: tyrion/tywin. i distinctly recall being puzzled by tywin’s treatment of tyrion in the opening chapters of the book too. it’s not until later that it makes some sort of sense (re: jaime’s freedom), BUT at that stage, it was a shock EVEN FOR TYRION himself. so why would you be surprised that someone who has not the the books would think it a regression? that is exactly what it was, a regression in their relationship because of some external event that tyrion had no way of knowing about. larry’s reaction was perfectly normal.

as for his the rest, i can’t blame him for thinking that qarth/warlock/assassin stuff was the stuff of last season either. IN THE BOOKS, IT WAS. in fact, i find it really interesting and perceptive of him that he unwittingly detected that scene did not belong there. that’s why i read non-readers reviews, not to validate my love for the show, but because i crave a perspective unspoiled by my knowledge of the books — positive, negative and anywhere in between or outside of it.

but apparently for the crime of disagreeing with the consensus, larry is no longer featured here? ridiculous. what is the purpose of this site anyway? to advertise for hbo? or to discuss the show, WARTS AND ALL?

  • qwerty:

I watch Larry’s reviews as I find them to be entertaining. I remain hugely bummed that the RW was spoiled for him. By spoiling it for him, that dick vicariously spoiled it for me, too.

We still bring out the “they killed my Nigga Ned” line in my home from time to time to express comedic disgust at somebody else’s conduct.

  • The Queen of Effing Thorns!!

You just KNOW Dame Diana Rigg is gonna bring it.

That’s Emmy Award Winning, BAFT Award Winning, and Tony Award Winning, Dame Diana Rigg.

    A Bond Girl!

  • I can’t wait for Jaime and Brienne to fight! Plus I’ve been deprived of my girl, Arya.

  • Arthur,

I would lower my expectations if I were you dude. Yes it would be awesome but someone in the writing room might have found it cheesy.

  • Pop,

It happens at the end of the third episode. This is also the episode that features the punk rock version of ‘The Bear and the Maiden Fair’ in the closing credits.

  • Pop:
Does anyone know if Jaime loses his hand in this episode or would that be too early?

I’m pretty sure that is what ends episode 3

  • Scott Glennon,
I kind of like the idea D&D would try to make the RW shocking for the readers as well, recreating the original experience in a different way. Could be done, I think, even if most won’t like it – but then you’re not really supposed to.

Still not convinced that’s where we’re headed, though.

  • Joshua Taylor: Haven’t you forgot something? Starts a with an H….?

Okay, I give up. I know Doctor Who is nominated for 3 Hugos? (GoT is nominated too, BTW).

  • Cheers guys, been a while since I read the book and couldn’t remember what time it happened.

  • Joan Català,

Oh, very sly of him then to re-edit the sequence, I thought Talisa’s fingers were awfully grimy. That explains it, they were Arya’s, Kudos for the deception.

  • I was contemplating the growth spurt of Isaac and how it might translate to a little Bran/Meera lovin:)

  • So excited to see Arya!!!

Which reminds me, in last weeks episode when Littlefinger told Sansa that Arya was still alive do you think he was lying or do you think it was a confirmation he recognized her as Tywin’s cupbearer in season 2? Sorry if this has already been covered in last weeks comments.

  • Nerd,

I think he saw her! But who the hell knows..for sure D&D put that line to make us being confused about that

  • I liked the way they handled the LF sansa convo about Arya last week, leaving it in the air about whether he saw her, that was one of the most littlefingerish thing he had done in a while. People complain about him not being subtle and then they complain when he is too subtle.

  • Joshua Taylor: Highgarden!!!

Oh! HA HA HA! You had me on Google and effing Wiki, feeling so bad dissed The Dame.

Turns out I dissed The effing Reach. I shall rectify by saying…

    HIGHGARDEN!!

    and

    ALWAYS SUPPORT THE BOTTOM!!

  • I have no idea what happens this episode but I am SO looking forward to it.

It’s so funny how we all have different rituals when it comes to Thrones, Can you believe that I have never watched an “On the next Game of Thrones…”

Previews are spoilers to me, as are episode titles and the summary for the episode. I did not want to look at those at all when WiC first posted them.

For the people who watch the previews, read episode titles and summaries, do you feel your enjoyment is lessened a little bit, knowing what’s coming in the episode?

  • Hollyoak: For the people who watch the previews, read episode titles and summaries, do you feel your enjoyment is lessened a little bit, knowing what’s coming in the episode?

Indeed. Congratulations! You are now a member of the BwP (the Brotherhood without Previews).

Since I’ve read the books, I don’t feel like I can be spoiled on ~big events~ … so watching previews, reading “spoilers” and seeing clips just makes me more excited / pumped up.

Absolutely. Actually, I think I’ll invoke my BwP membership right now. Chair, what were the words again?

  • idkk,

No. On his Facebook, after receiving a ton of flak for his review of “The Prince of Winterfell,” he said he was hesitant about continuing with the series because they had already killed his two favs (Ned and Drogo) and he knew they were soon going to kill two more (he didn’t specify which two, but we can guess).

  • When I read my first reek chapter my nipples were so hard they could have cut diamonds.

  • thisone: I think I’ll invoke my BwP membership right now. Chair, what were the words again?

I coined “BwP” but I didn’t write the words. I believe the words … and I’m going back two years here … are aptly quoted thusly:

    sjwenings: This oath might suffice.

The previews gather, and now my celibacy begins. It shall not end until the last episode has aired. I shall watch no trailers, nor no clips, read no scripts. I shall remain ignorant to the things seen by other weaker-willed men. I shall live and die at my post.

I am the reader of articles. I am the participant of discussions. I am the reviewer of episodes past, the ponderer of hidden messages, the resistor of temptations, the one who just scrolls down.

I pledge my life and honor to the Brotherhood without previews, for this season and all the seasons to come.

  • Mike Chair,

    Awesome! Enjoy the episode, guys.

  • Crap. Even after watching S03E01 a billion times this week, I still get kicked in the feels when I see Winterfel burning in the intro :/

  • I love this line ..
“No one enjoys the company of a humorless mute.”

Well, you may change your mind Jaime, be careful what you wish for! XD

  • Anybody else having problems with the sound on HBO? It keeps cutting out for two seconds at a time every minute or so.

  • Are we going to see the Blackfish this episode? I’m really looking forward to that.

  • I wont be able to watch until 10! :(

Are the opening credits the same as S3E1? Or did the they add the Dreadfort for Reek?

  • LordDavos12,

but no bear all covered in hair, that was a nice little touch to the story (and was hoping for it when I saw the Lannister soldiers following them)

  • Arya’s hair is growing, but Gendry and Hot Pie’s hair isn’t. Even though they’ve been on the same journey together. Do they give haircuts at Harrenhal?

  • My TV spazzed for a moment after Sandor said “What in the Seven Hells is…” and I couldn’t catch the rest of the sentance. What was it?

  • wargsareawesome:
My TV spazzed for a moment after Sandor said “What in the Seven Hells is…” and I couldn’t catch the rest of the sentance. What was it?

What in Seven hells are you doing with a bitch Stark, or something to that effect

  • Hot and cold runnin’ Damn that was a good episode! Arya and Thoros reminded me…we got some wicked sword fights coming!

    For Winterfell!

  • LOVED: Thoros, Queen of Thorns, Catelyn monologue, Hound at the end, Loras + Sansa set up
LIKED: Theon torture, Orell, Warg stuff, Jamie + Brienne,
DISLIKED: The scenery, Direwolf CGI, Sam and co, Cersei and Joff, Margery and Joff, The Reeds (both of them are boring as hell), Jamie and Briennes swordfight (compared to Ned vs Jamie it was BORING)

Compared to Episode 1 I found a lot of this episode freaking boring as hell. What the hell went wrong? Was it Vanessa Taylor? Maybe I just need to rewatch the episode?

  • Love the show and always will, but I am really disliking the more and more changes that are made from the book, subtle and large. Still a great TV program and I understand they do what they must.

  • LordDavos12: What in Seven hells are you doing with a bitch Stark, or something to that effect

Switch bitch and Stark around and that’s what he said.

  • Oh I forgot Tyrion and Shae’s scene – terrible. God I cringed the whole way through, whether it was bad acting, or poor writing or what. But my God… They better step their game up for Episode 3.

  • – Loved Olenna, Anguy and Thoros. Jojen and Meera, and Orell are okay for now.

    – Reek! Even if Theon/Reek is my favorite arc in the whole book series, I’m not confident about it in the show! I hope we get more of the “Boy” in the third episode.

    – Mace Tyrel was mentioned 1391293291 times these episode, for sure we are gonna see him in S4 or even this season.

    – Did D&D forget to show the non readers that Roose stayed at Harenhall.

    – Where is Varys? :(

    – The new scene about Jojen telling that Howland Reed cried when Ned died was great!

    – The fight scene was great! I think that Noah Taylor is gonna rock as Locke

    – Where is Burn Gorman? Since we know that he takes part on the mutiny at Craster’s, wouldn’t be strange that if they only introduce him in the episode of the mutiny?

    9,5/10 (I gave 10/10 for the first)

  • TastesLikeTheSea,

I’m watching the 10PM re-run now and I will approach each scene again and reassess. Other people will have different opinions sure, but Ep2 just didn’t excite me even half as much as Ep1.

  • Matt,

What are you smoking? There wasn’t any bad writing OR bad acting in this episode.

Robb said that Roose would stay to garrison Harrenhal when they left for Riverrun.

  • cozmeesah,

Uh the Tyrion/Shae scene was dreadful. And Robb said Roose was gonna stay behind at Harrenhal, what are YOU smoking? I loved the Robb/Roose/Karstark stuff

  • Another Great episode…..

Loved that we see what happens to Theon and his slow disintegration….
Also loved we start to see the ‘cracks’ in Tyrion and Shae’s relationship…
And i wonder if book readers picked up on Margery’s line where she says “Do you want me to show you?”…. (freaky freakay!!)

i was expecting a bit more from the introduction of the Reeds….

But overall it was great as always….

    :) Hodor!

  • thisone: Absolutely. Actually, I think I’ll invoke my BwP membership right now.Chair, what were the words again?

Oh, I’ve been around since its inception. I remember one of the vows was”…I just scroll down.” That always cracked me up .

  • Wizard!!!

    Michel:
I’m beting the cliffhanger beena Theon scene, IDK if the Jaime and Brienne capture is a “:O” moment to end an episode

  • I got a question to those who have read A Dance with Dragons :
Are Theon scenes in Season 3 same as they happened in the book? I haven’t read Dance with Dragons yet so the season 3 will spoil some of them to me. Thanks.

  • re: Talisa honeypot theory

Ha! If she is a honeypot, I’m totally calling it from now: Stoneheart’s hanging her instead of a Frey at season’s end (resulting in the internets ‘sploding)

  • I like that! I don’t have any idea logistically how they could pull it off, but it sounds cool.

  • Michel,

    Michel,

In an interview posted on westeros.org Julian Glover stated that the old/young physical deception was an in-production fluke that worked with his character so D&D added it in. Also, his Pycelle has expanded screen time because he told D&D that he’s too good of an actor to have a “small role.” Wish I found the link to post here. It’s somewhere on westeros.org.
