New S3 characters video
By Hear Me Roar on in Media.

Now that we have seen two episodes, HBO treats us to a video highlighting the new characters in the familar fashion – through clips and interviews. Darquemode has kindly recorded the feature for us.

The last bit introduces the Riverrun characters and more of the Brotherhood, so that is strictly speaking SPOILER territory. Beware!

Hear Me Roar: I like these videos very much, first and foremost because they give us insight into the actors’ and writers’ interpretation of the characters.

    Lars,

Better from him than Melisandre! XD
I love the look on Mel’s face as she examines Beric.

Love the Blackfish even more now!
The armor and of course the glimpse at Clive Russell’s portrayal of him are simply amazing!

Ridiculously exciting. Edmure, Blackfish (Holy shit he’s huge), Beric and Orell all look like they’re scenes will be super amazing. Of course all the rest do too but we’ve seen more of them already.

The Hound vs Beric looks like it’s going to be incredible, every clip we’ve seen so far is amazing. Why is it so far away? :(

I’m really interested in why Mel is visiting Thoros and Beric, very excited to see how it plays out. Maybe she’ll learn the skill so she can use it on someone a few years from now :P

    Ned,

Despite the clip being quite detailed, not all new characters have been included in the clip – Ramsay, Daario, Selyse and Shireen should be appearing in later episodes and maybe HBO didn’t want to spoil. Whereas we have seen all the rest of the new faces except the Tullys which I think will be in episode 3 according to the preview.

Yes! It’s so satisfying seeing genuine shock in such a coolly confident character. She’s essentially seeing a Fire-touched wight for the first time, and that certainly merits a response.

Blackfish is going to be awesome! I want him and Tormund on my dodgeball team.. they are beasts!

Interesting how Meera and Osha are going to clash. I wonder if Meera is gonna go all alpha on her. Osha is a fighter.. but Meera has her swamp smarts and has been a protector all her life. I don’t see her taking a back seat to Osha.

Can’t wait to see Clive in action. He looks pretty tough.

    Insightful vid, thanks Darquemode.

I’m of the impression that the scenes among the Wildlings will continue to
improve now that Hinds and Hivjuv are present. In the role of Orell,Crooke
lends interest in a way I had never seen from his past work in films. The Wargs
and GreenSeers are my favourites in the ASOIAF stories, GoT appears off to a
    good start.

Brodie-Sangster and Hempstead have matured so, I can hear their voices cracking.
Amazing to watch Sangster now since his starring in Nanny McPhee.

The upcoming scenes at Riverrun, with the Tully’s and later the dueling strategist
and wit between QoT and Tywin is marvelous to consider.

If this show has done nothing else right (and it’s done an awful lot right) the casting is just pure perfection. So many of the supporting characters are popping just as much, if not more so, than they did in the book. It’s really amazing how much they get across with so little time onscreen.

    Michel,
I would guess once Melisandre has left Dragonstone (looks like next episode from the preview), Stannis will be less under her spell. He might go talk to Davos in his cell, eventually freeing him, visit wife and daughter and promise not to leave them so alone again etc. (should be about episodes 5-6, with Mel likely to return in 7-8 for the leeches scene). Pure speculation, though.

I think it’s very, very unlikely that Jon is dead (or permanently dead, at any rate). Martin makes his deaths pretty damn unambigious.

    Posted April 8, 2013 at 9:56 pm | Permalink

To me, what makes the pages leap onto the screen more vividly are the secondary and tertiary characters. Even if we just get a glimpse or a couple of lines from someone memorable in the book it makes the world more complete. Ser Dontos’ very appearance from last season was one such. Davos, of course, Thoros, Beric and the rest, ditto. That’s why I was disappointed to not see one guy eating with the Brotherhood wearing a yellow cloak, or Strong Belwas in Essos somwhere with Ser Barristan of House Badass.

Although Ciaran is getting good marks for Mance, count me amongst those who’s really disappointed he’s being played quite one-dimensional, as is Tormund (at least for the moment). Fierce warrior. Great. We get it. Now where’s that lute or even just a song? Show more than one side of him! And if I don’t hear about a certain famous member (HAR!) or a bear out of Tormund I’ll be quite sad indeed.

Now I see why Tobias Menzies was cast to play Edmure — and now I feel stupid for not having seen it before. He’s basically playing the same kind of role as he did on Rome. But, typecasting aside, he’s damn good at it.

And yes, I definitely second Blackfish’s badassedness. Those Riverrun scenes are going to be great. And to be honest, they never really stood out to me in the books (but maybe that’s because they’re told through Catelyn’s point of view, and I freaking hate Catelyn — I know, I’m the only one, right?).

Also, I don’t know about you guys, but I never pictured Missandei having bewbs like that when reading the books. Isn’t she supposed to be like 10 years old?… Whatever. Don’t mistake me. I’m not complaining. This is definitely a case where I’m willing to say “to hell with the source material”. Because extreme hotness will do that to me.

  62. WompWomp
    Posted April 9, 2013 at 12:13 am | Permalink

    Varamyr Fourskins,

Reminds me of how a friend told me how much she dislikes Margaery on the show because Natalie Dormer has played the same character in other shows like The Tudors. I remember watching some Merlin and being a bit disenchanted by James Cosmo’s turn as a savage chieftain-like character while looking a lot like Mormont on GoT. In the end though, I see their GoT roles as their definitive portrayals of any similar typecasting they may have on their resume. GoT excels at creating a sense of place, so the world of ASOIAF is where they all belong.

Seriously, those bewbs. Totally unexpected. Yeah, Missandei is supposed to be an intelligent but still meek girlchild. Aging her up will help fill the void Dany’s handmaidens left. I can almost hear the rising murmur of the prurient prayers being lifted to D&D for this busty Missandei to take over Irri’s dutiful role in Dany’s jilling.

If the cast gets any more amazing we’ll have to watch the show while wearing sunglasses.

Missandei is stunning. I love her voice. Thoros is so alive. I like Jojen being friendlier instead of Mr. Doom’n'gloom. Queen of Thorns is going to drive Tywin to drink heavily. Beric looks and sounds badass.

  64. Darquemode
    Posted April 9, 2013 at 12:50 am | Permalink

    Michel,

Selysse and Shireen were both very minor characters to begin with really. Now remove Shirreen’s scenes with Edric as he is not cast. Now do the same for scenes with Patchface for the same reasons. The role gets even smaller. Of course they can create a few new scenes, but the point stands…

We got one episode of Stannis being under Mel’s spell and now we could see Selyse holding court in his absence. Then her next scenes would be what? Hmm… trying to persuade Stannis to sacrifice Edric (who looks to have his role taken by Gendry). Most of the other meaty Selyse scenes come in ADwD as I recall…

I think we will still see both parties, but they had to establish Stannis under Melisandre’s spell first. Once Melisandre leaves Dragonstone I bet we will see them.

    ebevan91,

    Great call.

All the new actors seem perfect. On a side note, D&D keep talking about how this is THE season. I know some huge things happen in this part of Storm, but unless they have done some serious shuffling I’ll have to wait until season 4 for all the other awesome climaxes and scenes I want. What we get in this season is only the kickoff.

Agree totally. I really wanted to see more of the members of the Brotherhood Without Banners. When I heard singing in the last episode, I got really excited for a moment, thinking they’d cast Tom without announcing it. Alas, no such luck.

I live! Thanks for remembering me! I’ve stayed away from the boards because I’m tired of the “My character is better than yours” and “Whoever dislikes sex scenes is a prude” dynamics, but I love that Clive/Brynden is receiving so much praise. I’m currently in Blackfish overdose and this week is going to be VERY long. The next will be full of screencapping madness.

I truly hope they don’t change his name or something. If they just call him “Blackfish” it’s fine for me, if a little weird. Maybe they did it because later we might have Brynden “Bloodraven” Rivers and it would be confusing… but Brynden Tully was there first, LOL. Oh well, I’ll still call him Brynden in my fanfics. :D

I’m a bit worried that they might pit him against Edmure. He grabs the bow and pushes poor Ed aside with such contempt. In the books he was always respectful to Ed, even when criticizing him. We’ll see.

I liked the part where he was like “don’t call him nephew, he’s your king!” but wasn’t crazy about him pushing Edmure aside at the funeral. Ah well, I’ll wait until I see the context to form my opinion.

Maybe this is an Asha/Yara situation…Brynden is too close to Brandon?! Even though Bran’s been called Brandon maybe once (Jojen) and no one talks about Brandon Stark. ;)

Still not sure about Paul Kaye for Thoros, he’s not a bad actor I just keep seeing Dennis Pennis.

I keep seeing William Hurt. They look so alike.

Well he says in the video “I’ve been called Blackfish for so long people forget my real name” so obviously they wont just make his real name “Blackfish”, kind of silly anyone would think that, or be worried about it. Its clearly his nickname

Awesome video, way more new stuff than I expected.
Can’t do much more than agree with everything that’s been said before, especially the Olenna – Tywin scenes.

I just wanted to add that Jon’s scars look awesome to, great having a better shot at them than the one second we got in the chaos teaser.

    Magnar of Thenn,

But the subtitle says “Blackfish Tully!” I’m just jesting really, especially because it sounds so ridiculous.

The casting on this show is just fantastic, there isn’t anything else I can really say other than that.

I thought this was interesting — on HBOGo, there is a feature where you can get a closer look at some of the props on set. One of those props is the letter Robb was sent with the news of the sacking of Winterfell.

The interesting part? It’s signed by Ramsay Snow, even though we technically haven’t “met” Ramsay yet — wink, wink, nudge, nudge.

Anyway, thought that was cool. A little something for the book readers.

Imagine when I saw him jokingly called “Blackie” on Tumblr. I was like, “Who?” :D

Thanks a lot for this insightful video.

I always enjoy listening to the actors/writers talk about the characters and how they perceive them. Also, there are so many new players now that it helped me (a non-book reader) to catch up on everyone’s role in the game. I’m really excited as it seems that there’s so much more to come…

Does anybody else think that the purpose of having Ramsey Snow play out a charade for Theon is to help him gain his trust in order to allow him to find out what happened to the Stark children? (As well as to establish him as a sadistic bastard).

In the show he was obviously not directly involved in the burning of the fake Starks and wouldn’t know the truth.

I found it interesting that Rob and Cat are only told that Bran and Rickon are unaccounted for, rather than being dead in the last episode. I wonder if the season will see Ramsey gain Theon’s trust as “boy”, find out the truth, reveal himself and then send false information to Rob saying that they are dead. This will probably add to the confusion for non-book readers and create a more tense atmosphere leading into the RW.

I remember when first reading those chapters in the book, there was a nagging feeling that something wasn’t right, in part due to Ramsey’s betrayal of the Northerners in Winterfell in the previous book. I think the show is attempting to do the same by deliberately making things confusing for the non-book readers at this stage: By not revealing who burned Winterfell straight away, not identifying who Theon’s torturors are, it means there will be several confusing questions in their minds that will be answered in episode 9.

On other matters, it appears as if Gendry will take the place of Edric Storm in this season. I can see why they would do this, it will mean that they don’t need to hire another actor or introduce another character, thereby stream lining the already large cast as much as possible. The danger of doing this will be that it could appear silly having Melisandre be able to pop into the Riverlands to pick him up unscathed. However if done well it would be a good way to establish her ability to see the future in the flames as legitimate. I would imagine she will come to ransom Gendry from the Brotherhood shortly after Arya is taken by the Hound.

Very cool. Hearing “Valar Morghulis” from Missendei, Thoros repeating Melisandre’s chant, “the night is dark and full of terrors”. I like how they are reusing catch phrases, like in this week’s episode when Tyrion tells Shae, “we’ve come to a dangerous place” just like Ned told Arya.

I am starting to fear that they have just dropped the name ‘Brynden’ from the tv series, which would disappoint me greatly because it would sound silly to always refer to him as ‘Blackfish’. As they have avoided having multiple characters with the same name so far (with the exception of Jon Snow and Jon Arryn), they may have dropped it because of the other Brynden that appears later on, but if they did we won’t get the line that Bloodraven says to Bran, that the Blackfish was ‘probably named for me’, and the other Brynden won’t appear for at least another two seasons.

On the topic of naming, I am curious as to how they will handle Jon Connington. They could keep his name the same and just refer to him as Griff most of the time, or they might just change his name to something similar but distinctly different, like they did with Robert/Robin Arryn.

    WompWomp:
Yes! It’s so satisfying seeing genuine shock in such a coolly confident character. She’s essentially seeing a Fire-touched wight for the first time, and that certainly merits a response.

For the first time? I don’t think you read Melisandre’s POV chapter in ADwD very closely. She’s undead herself, and presumably was created immediately after she was *carefully killed*, to minimize any brain damage. It’s her glamour that hides her true appearance from those who see her and it is her glamour that gives off her unnatural heat. That’s why she does not feel the cold, why poison cannot harm her, and why she does not need to eat or sleep, and why she can barely remember her true name, Melony, that she had as a slave when she was first sold in Volantis. Melisandre is not alive.
