Episode 25 Preview: “Kissed By Fire”
By Ours is the Fury on in Media.

“Tywin Lannister knows what he needs to do to crush us in a day.” – Robb Stark

“The Hound is judged by the gods; Jaime is judged by men. Jon proves himself. Robb is betrayed. Tyrion learns the cost of weddings.”

“Kissed By Fire” is written by Bryan Cogman and directed by Alex Graves.

Ours is the Fury: This looks to be an exciting episode with several storylines hitting high points after weeks of build-up. Avoiding spoilers, all I have to say is this: CAVE.

This episode looks insanely great – and insanely busy. Seems like Theon, Bran, & Sam are the only storylines that won’t be included – and then again, they might be. If they manage the time well, though, should be incredible.

Promising episode with lots of epic and fan favorite scenes to look forward to. Last week’s episode will be hard to top, but I think it could get close:

    The Hound’s trial by combat.
    Karstark affair and execution.
Lots of Wildling action, including the cave-sex-scene.
Judging from the preview: Tyrion learning he’ll have to marry Sansa?

Even if that storyline isn’t present I can forgive it… Beric VS Hound, Jon/Ygritte, Roose Bolton and Jaime, this is going to be an awesome episode!

    Endless Giraffe,

I have no clue what Asha/Yara is going to do this season. The show seems to be leaving out the whole Ironborn occupying the North storyline. Robb hasn’t decided to go North and drive the Ironborn back out and I doubt he will in the show. Likewise, they have not even mentioned Balon styling himself king. So if we get the leeches scene with Stannis and Melisandre it will only be Joffrey and Robb he names as usurpers.

I am so incredibly excited about this episode–FINALLY Jon’s storyline can get a move on! They’ve set the stage, and now it’s time for some serious character development and key moments.

(And of course the fangirl in me has been looking forward to Jon and Ygritte’s cave scene since, well, they announced that the series was in the works :D All I can say is Kit had better even out the ratio of female:male nudity this season. Equality FTW!)

Jaime and Brienne being delivered to Roose Bolton at Harrenhal. Bath scene?

    Karstark betrayal.

Jon gets some sexy time in a cave.

    Beric VS The Hound (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

    Stannis releases Davos from prison

    Dany meets Grey Worm

Littlefinger comes to collect Sansa – she tells him she can’t go because she’s to marry Loras.
Upset by this, Littlefinger tells Tywin of the Tyrell plot.

Tywin tells Tyrion he must marry Sansa instead.

Tyrion tells Shae he has to marry Sansa – Shae is upset.

There’s a week break before episode 9 because that’s Memorial Day Weekend in the US. Last year Blackwater aired on that weekend and had a big ratings dip. I think HBO wants to make sure that more people tune in for episode 9 this year.

I like the way the trailer cuts the scenes to be entirely and intentionally misleading for non-readers (eg the ‘he has to die’ bit and the ‘we need to act first’ bit).

On the other hand: is including a one-second glimpse of Stannis doing nothing an intentionally ironic autoparody?

Hey guys, the ironborn ocupation at the north has been mentioned this season, yes! In the last episode, the Boy told Theon that Yara is in Depwood Motte.

About Yara appearing these season, I’m guessing they will create some scenes for her in the last 3 episodes trying to find Theon, and when she is close to find him, she knows about Balon’s death and return to the Iron Islands.

    ebevan91,

Yes Kissed by Fire refers to Ygritte. And the preview shows her kissing Jon in the mouth, nothing more. The preview does not show her moaning like the trailer did so I’m assuming that happens later

  57. Isabelle
    Posted April 26, 2013 at 9:31 pm | Permalink

    Turncloak,

I see what you’re saying, but they’re climbing the Wall next episode, so the likelihood of them finding time to return to the cave before then is slim. The preview shows them kissing in a cave-like setting identical to the one shown in the trailers where she’s undressing and moaning, so I have a feeling they’ll be getting up to more than a simple snog in episode five.

The episode summary also says that “Jon proves himself,” and in the book, he “proved” that he was truly foregoing his vows and becoming a part of the wildings by taking Ygritte to his bed.

Can we talk for a second about how great and appropriate the title “Kissed By Fire” is going to be?

With one three-word phrase, they manage to refer to:

    1. Ygritte and Jon, both in terms of her hair color and in terms of what they’ll most likely spend most of the episode doing.

    2. Sansa — another redhead, but a decidedly less lucky one — not being particularly lucky at all.

    3. Beric Dondarrion, who is most likely going to do his stabbed-got-up-again fire zombie reveal thing this episode — something he can only do because he was, wait for it, kissed by fire.

    4. Possibly even Jaime getting his arm cauterized, if they go with fire rather than whatever the heck Qyburn used in the original book.

    And who knows what else?

Assuming Dagmer, Lorren et al weren’t slaughtered by Ramsay after handing Theon over – a long shot, I knowI’m wondering whether the scene with Yara might include her being informed of Theon’s capture and then sending them to take Moat Cailin (instead on the ironmen who did that in the book)thereby setting up the possibility of a reunion between Theon and his old crew later on. Does anyone know one way or the other if Ralph Ineson and/or KB Forbes were involved in S3?

As far as the cave scene goesdidn’t one of the previews show a Jon and Ygritte nude swimming scene (or was my imagination just on overdrive!)? :O

Also looks like Jaime yelling out whilst getting stump cauterised so presumably with Qyburn

Some of my favorite moments and lines of dialogue in the series are set to appear in this episode. I sincerely hope that Bryan Cogman has kept the following two exchanges intact.

The Lord of the Dreadfort finally pursed his lips and said, “You have lost a hand.
“No,” said Jaime, “I have it here, hanging around my neck.”

    And this one:

Qyburn was taken aback. “There will be pain.”
    “I’ll scream.”
    “A great deal of pain.”
    “I’ll scream very loudly.”

Displaying that kind of wit amidst his crappy circumstances will let everyone know that Jaime is on his way back.

I would add the “Lord Bolton is very fond of leeches.”/”Yes, he would be,” exchange as well, but I think that there’s a good chance that the whole Roose Bolton’s affinity for leeches has been dropped from the show.

I really hope theykeep the leech thing. At the moment, no-one who hasnt read the books really knows him. The leeching in the books made him memorable for me, and it would be a surefire way to make the audience remember him, even if its just as “that leech guy”. “Jaime Lannister sends his regards” is better if Bolton is more memorable

My comment merely quoted one (1) word from each of six (6) other comments (okay, I quoted one poster twice by accident — sue me). What was that word? It was “Hound.”

I sincerely apologize to to WiC.net and Ours is the Fury if you found my comment offensive. I like the Hound. Evidently, so do, at least, six (6) other fans. It bugged Natalie Tena too – she offered to grow a bush for the scene (in her own words “Osha should’ve had muff, like muff down her thighs”) but was told not to.

    B,

He was also 100% not subtle at all in the books. It was easy to hide that amongst the various POVs but in a visual medium? Impossible. There’s a menace to Michael McElhatton’s portrayal. He’s the only Northern lord portrayed without facial hair. This makes him stand out first and for most. He has a growly voice that everyone listens to and he has an air of “who is this guy?” about him. He may not be Dracula of the North like he is in the books but the showrunners like many characters in the show are unraveling him beautifully thus far. In my opinion anyway. I think the next few episodes will determine everything concerning the adaptation of his character.

I agree in theory – I’m also missing the visions and prophecies. However, I can also understand why they might have held off. Not sure if I’m correct, but here are my two suggested reasons:

    1. It’s easier to spoil things in a visual medium than in the book. Dany’s visions, if exactly like in the book, would have massively spoilt things like the RW which would have been screamingly explicit to any Unsullied. Also, some things in the visions might not have been referenced in the show yet – e.g. has Lyanna’s connection to blue flowers, and thereby the flower in the ice point to R+L=J, been on TV?

    2. I suspect they’re deliberately holding off on prophecies such as Azor Ahai until they can drop a bombshell at a more dramatically-loaded moment. SO instead of having having 3 seasons of who’s Azor Ahai? you might have a moment in S5 of “oh, THAT’S what Mel’s been doing” and then a relatively short build-up to it being revealed, whether through Bran the Tree or Jon’s resurrection or however.

I kind of like how Mel’s motives are murkier in the show, as the prophecy hasn’t been mentioned yet…

Of course, I can also see an option 3.

    3. Azor Ahai is a red herring, which GRRM let D&D in on, and they’re leaving it out because they know it won’t have a pay-off. But I doubt it.

Seconded. I love that moment — and the part right before it, when Jaime somehow winds up insulting Roose Bolton the second he sees him, which is the dumbest thing he could possibly do at that point, and seems just as surprised to hear the comment come out of his mouth as anybody else.

I’ve said it before, but that Lannister thing where you PHYSICALLY CAN NOT KEEP YOUR BIG MOUTH SHUT even when it would be much, much smarter to do so cracks me up every time it gets Jaime or Tyrion into trouble.

I understand why they didn’t follow through with Dontos Hollard — i.e. too many minor characters. But I don’t understand why they bothered to introduce him in the first place.

I suppose it didn’t make a difference to non-book readers. But when we first met him in episode 1 of season 2, I figured his storyline would play out as it does in the book. But we haven’t heard from him since (other than a brief glimpse of him playing the fool with Cersei & Sansa at the Sept of Baelor during the Attack on King’s Landing). Which leads me to believe he’s one of those rare characters who both got axed and included at the same time (like Maege Mormont & Galbert Glover). But unlike Maege Mormont and Galbert Glover (who appear unnamed in council with Robb during season 1), they actually gave Dontos a few lines and addressed him by his name. So, he’s a rare one indeed.

They edited him out of season 2. They were more scenes with Dontos that were filmed but we never saw and you can even see him in the background in some scenes like with Sansa and Cercei during Blackwater and in the Throne Room when Joffrey is threatening Sansa. They originally planned on keeping the Dontos plot but as they were finishing S2 and planning S3 they decided to go in a different direction. Supposedly he going to show up again in the show though.

    Joshua Taylor,

I agree completely. Of course Roose is great how he is in the books, but I actually like McElhatton’s portrayal more than in the books. I think if they made him exactly how he is in the books (ie. leeches, soft and creepy voice) he would have immediately come across to the viewers as evil, which would have of course given away his betrayal. Plus he looks great for the part as well. Also his exchange with Jaime is one of my favorite bits of dialogue in the series, and apparently they’re staying quite faithful to the book for it. :D

I was including Arya and the Hound with the rest of the RW. But I guess they could just show Robb, Catelyn, Edmure etc. arriving, Arya and the Hound arriving, maybe a short exchange with Lord Walder, plus the Queenscrown stuff… Yeah they could do it, but they’ve got to be careful to not show too much, like the fighting from the trailers.

    Joshua Taylor,

I actually really like it. It shows Quite clearly that Selyse has been driven to the brink of insanity by failing to succeed in the role that society has placed upon her. There’s a crushing sadness about the photos.

Seriously? You know that women actually have pubic hair, right?

*ahem* Actually, thanks to Brazil, the internet, and the changes that has wrought in the West since the mid-90s, the large majority of men under 45 have seen little evidence of that fact for nigh on two decades. And yes, we’re okay with that. :P

I enjoy the alterations to the story if they make for good TV. The Dany stuff in S2 was crap but not because it was different than the books but because it was just crappy TV. The Dragonstone stuff is looks like it will be quite different from the books but it could make for much better TV but for many fans it doesn’t matter because it goes against the holy scripture of ASOIAF. Anything that throws them for a loop they will react negatively to. They like to look down on nonreaders but it hard to be a smug book reader when you don’t know single thing that will happen on the show. I already see a bunch of nerd rage about it on Westeros and Tumblr. Selyse is a dull minor book character and this could make her a more intriguing character for the TV audience.

JamesL–I totally agree. BookSelyse is so boring and annoying that about the only thing I remember about her is that she had a mustache. Looks like ShowSelyse will be more interesting, for realz! And yes, the nerd rage is already roaring to life–I just read a post over at Westeros where the poster is so enraged over—what’s shown in those pics— that he/she is quitting the show forever. Sheesh, peeps!

Maybe Selyse kept the stillborns in hope that magic could bring them life? That or she is just Lysa Arryn level crazy, if not more so. She does obseess over never being able to give Stannis sons in the books. And Melisandre mentioned her only giving birth to stillborns in season 2. It’s a jarring picture, but does it change anything? I’m not sure. Hopefully Stannis wasn’t involved in keeping them like that.

Stay away from tumblr! A lot of people think Westeros.org is where all the extreme nerd rage is but westerns.org is nothing compared to the stuff I read on tumblr. Hating the showrunners is part of the “fandom” on tumblr even though 98% of them wouldn’t know anything about this book series if David and Dan hadn’t convinced HBO to make this show. All the hate on tumblr is usually directed at David and Dan but lucky for you now you’ll probably be receiving plenty of it.

Think those pics look awesome. They instantly make Selyse about a billion times more interesting. Really, what did she ever do in the books? Moan at Jon Snow? The book tells us she has had many miscarriages, so there’s obviously a whole lot of emotional trauma there that the book never even touches on that the show might. It also makes for a striking visual. And the fact it upsets purists makes me love it even more. Also the look on Jaime’s face is priceless.

Can’t say these pictures seem all that encouraging, it’s like…I dunno, like it became sci-fi. But Selyse never left much of an impression on me regardless so I don’t care. And it’s something that may end up being quite effective in context. The rest of it, though….very cool stuff. Jaime/Brienne :)

MTE… as one of those who often identifies with the “crazy tumblr feminist” perspective, I would think that they should be happy with Selyse being altered… In the book she is portrayed as an annoying, zealous harpy with no redeeming characteristics. Her motivations are never explored. I’d argue she’s one of a few sexist caricatures in George’s original work (Shae being another) and if these changes give her more depth and agency that’s a good thing.

    JamesL,

Why not? What is too nerdy about it? I did say “nearly verbatim.” Obviously you can’t include everything, but I would like to hear a Lewyn Martell reference, and it would be nice for the show to finally reveal the Martells were aligned with the Targaryens through marriage. And I think it is important for the audience to know why Elia and her children were kept in King’s Landing while the Queen and Viserys were spirited away to Dragonstone.

    Tyrion Pimpslap,

Every thing you put under spoilers is too nerdy for the casual viewer to understand or care about. They will never understand all this fantasy history stuff with the Targaryns and Martells. Most of them still can’t name half the characters on the show how are they going to understand the history of Westeros.

I totally disagree. Tumblr isn’t generally a GoT hatefest or a cooing lovefest of show apologists. It’s a great place to find insightful, honest critical analysis of the show, and plenty of great humour. So, Bryan Cogman, you actually should check it out.

    JamesL,

Wow. Giving important exposition on a family that comes into play next season is ‘too nerdy’? You are not giving the audience enough credit. Maybe you should go read TWOP’s ‘Unsullied’ viewer speculation thread. They are itching to hear more about Dorne and still aren’t sure why the Martells would ‘hate the Lannisters’. They also want to know if the children that were killed were Aerys or Rhaegar’s.

    Luana,

There is a lot of funny GoT stuff on there but it is also filled tons of negativity towards the people who bring this story to life. Most of the criticism are anything but insightful but ridiculous purist nonsense. The ironic thing is that a lot of the D&D original scenes and lines of dialogue get tons notes and are reblogged by the same people who bash them as horrible writers. I complain about stuff too, the show isn’t perfect, but I don’t bash the show runners.

    Tyrion Pimpslap,

There are about 6-8 regular posters on that forum, don’t think that is an accurate representation of the average nonreader viewer. They may be nonreaders but they are not part of the casual viewers which is the majority of the audience.. As I said before the majority of the casual viewers still can not name most of the characters in this show. So yes I think all that stuff about Robert Rebellion, while important tot he story, is too nerdy for the average casual viewer of the show to understand. They may keep the dialogue from the books but the audience won’t understand any of it nor will they care.

Um…while the first thing you said is understandable even if I disagree, what’s the reason you claim it’s unhealthy for women? Pubic lice are becoming a thing of the past, and that would seem to show that it is not grooming which is more hazardous.
