  • This season just keeps getting better and better with each episode. Hopefully the trend continues tonight…

  • At the halfway mark and I believe the season will get stronger the writers are doing pretty good I hope the ratings reflect it tonight

  • 2nd half of the seasons are when things really start to kick off. With how great the first half of this seasons been, can’t wait for the later episodes!

  • So Melisandre is going to the Riverlands? I guess my theory that she would meet up with Daenerys was wrong. Why is she going to meet with Robb? He’s not really the king, I’d say, even though they call him King in the North.

  • I’m looking foward to seeing wildling extra # 4 fall off the wall and lots more of HBO’s required nudity!

  • Unbesmirched,

There is a king’s bastard wandering around the Riverlands with a certain group of outlaws. “There is power in king’s blood”, even if you are just a bastard.

  • My expectations are tempered for this episode. I’m hoping to be surprised, but I just can’t see anything major happening other than the wildlings climbing the Wall. And I’m a bit worried about how the Melisandre/BWOB scene will work out. If it provides a ton of exposition on Rh’llor and even mentions Azor Ahai reborn then I will be a happy camper. Here’s to another great episode, even if I have lowered expectations. I do think episodes 7-10 will be spectacular.

  • I’m disappointed with elimination of Kevin Lannister from the show. Especially from the final scene of last week’s episode. If they want to make a casting change, fine. But it’s time to get this character into gear. Those of you who’ve read the books understand where I’m going with this….

  • and while I’m raising the issue of casting… the Mountain is apparently gone from this Season. They should use this opportunity to bring back the first dude, or somebody else from the Spartacus cast. I want to see a monster like we had in season one.

  • I’m still waiting patiently for Tormund’s bear love story. He’s been entirely too serious up to this point.

  • J,

The Kevan Lannister situation makes perfect sense. At this point he is still by Lancel’s side as he recovers from his blackwater wounds which is why we haven’t seen him

  • So many Freys so many Boltons so much doom. Hopefully “boy” reveals his identity. I’m still holding out a teeny bit of hope we’ll hear the name Reek.

  • J,

I reached the exact same conclusion last night when thinking about Season 4. I hope they recast The Mountain. Third times a charm, right?

  • I’m really hoping to see some of the light hearted side of Tormund and more development of the Jon-Tormund relationship. I also want to see Bran do some warging!

  • I’m not reading this post or its responses because I like to watch the show fresh, and not know what each episode holds.

Just wanted to pop in to say that it’s amazing how many interactive features are on HBOGo. For every episode, there are snippets from D&D, comments from the actors, director and crew, really amazing. There is really so much Thrones material you could watch each season three times: once for the show itself, once with the interactive commentary and another just for good measure. I think I’ll go back to season one and watch all three seasons on HBOGo with the interactive features turned on.

When you add the content of the blu rays that’s a whole lot of watching. Can’t wait for tonight!

  • Bran story needs to kick into highgear, People still think Bran is going to the wall to meet Jon Snow, they need to explain-

    – Only way he can catch the Crow is to fly
    – Explain the White walkers to Bran like Jojen did in the trailers(when is that coming?)
    – What Jojen and Meera are doing and where they are taking Bran….

I really think Bran has been getting the shaft even moreso than Jon Snow this season, atl east people know what Jon is doing, people still dont know what the situation with Bran/Jojen is…

  • J,
I think Kevan will come back in season 4, alongside Mace Tyrell and Oberyn Martell. Thus, we’ll have the next Small Council ready. Up to the trial, Kevan is not particularly useful in an already overcrowded cast.

As for Bran, I agree. We need more and quickly. That said, I’m hopeful, since we’ll have him in an important part for the last two episodes (as the synopsis reveal). Queenscrown must be awesome, Bran’s character and arc deserve at least that (and Hempstead-Wright too, who’s been very good so far).

  • – Hyped with Theon’s arc. Iwan Rheon was an amazing find by Nina Gold. I hope the reveal ofRamsay is these week.

    – Excited for more scenes with Michael Mcelhatton, that guy is really Roose from the books.

    – Really expeting some good and beautiful shoots from the top of the Wall.

  • Can someone confirm if The Mountain is in S3? and if so/not who will be playing him from now on? Same guy as season 2?

  • Kyrion,

I think it’s totally understandable why they are taking Bran’s story so slow. He doesn’t really do much until he gets to the wall, and that should be the end of the season, maybe not even until next season. I like that they are stretching out him discovering his warging ability. If they went too fast with it, there would be nothing left to tell come Seasons 4/5.

  • Also, I hope Anguy doesn’t die. That don’t even make sense for me, but some people were speculating that in another thread.

  • There’s always gonna be another mountain
I’m always gonna wanna make it move
Always gonna be an uphill battle
Sometimes I’m gonna have to lose
Ain’t about how fast I get there
Ain’t about what’s waitin’ on the other side
    It’s the climb

    ITS THE CLIMB

  • If I remember correctly, the Mountain wasn’t in ASOS until Tyrion’s trial. He’s not really needed right now.

  • Unbesmirched: So Melisandre is going to the Riverlands?

When Mel left Stannis, she told him she had drained too much out of him for a second shadowbaby but added cryptically that he wasn’t the only one with “his blood”.

Perhaps step one is meeting up with the only other red priest in Westeros to compare notes? Also, do we really know who Gendry’s biological father is?

  • Michel,

Tonight Arya is probably just going to meet Melisandre. If the Hound is going to kill Anguy, it likely won’t be until next week.

Side note, just how detailed are these leaked photos? I’ve heard a couple of people saying they might be a hoax.

  • Nagga’s Kin,

    Robert was Gendry’s father

Also, some have suggested that perhaps Thoros will teach Mel how to resurrect, which may come in useful for her later on :)

  • SPOILERS (EVEN FOR THE BOOK READERS (YOU PROBABLY DONT WANNA READ IT))

I just seen some screencaps for tonight’s episode… and I’m gonna be pissed because the sexiest actress on the show is gonna get killed by the one kid I was warming up to despite all the fucked up shit he has done throughout his reign… fuck him. NOW I DEMAND THE PW NOW FOR VENGEANCE!!!

PS: I’m gonna be so pissed tonight.

  • sunspear,

    They are quite detailed.

You vaguely may or may not being able to see them discussed in depth at westeros.org forums, which may or may not be where I learned about them. Possibly.

  • i’ve seen screencaps from this episode.. and even as a book reader i was shocked. but the thing that bothers me is – how did those leak? somebody should get fired.

  • SPOILER FOR BOOK READERS TOO
    Ser Bug,

I’ve seen this too..How do you think she is going to be killed? IMO, Littlefinger will discover that she works for Varys, and will invent some excuse for Joffrey to have him killing her. And the scene with Varys and LF in the Throne Room could be LF telling Varys about the death of his spy

  • Michel,

I’ve heard speculation that marg will step in and see the result, which will serve as catalyst for the PW

  • Michel,

I’m not gonna plot it out in my head, just gonna sit patiently until the show comes on. I was just so surprised as hell seeing that character like that (because I actually like that character) and mostly because I thought Ros would factor in the Jeyne Pool plotline by being fake Sansa or fake Arya or fake Talia.

But now on Tumblr, I’m seeing a bunch of feminists complaining about it so I expect that to be the subject of discussion for the next week (or I hope not because it’s a stupid and annoying complaint seeing as this is GoT and people die horrible deaths).

  • Ivan:
i’ve seen screencaps from this episode..and even as a book reader i was shocked. but the thing that bothers me is – how did those leak? somebody should get fired.

That’s what I’d like to know. I was devastated at seeing them. And according to the guys here, no one gets a pre-release copy.

[This is @GameOfRos_ from Twitter, note.]

  • Michel,

looks to me like she is also an escalated replacement for that scene in the book where Joff is trying to use his crossbow to kill rabbits but he has shit aim, after a closer look at the screencap you can see all the arrows that missed, as to how Ros becomes his target practice i have not figured that out yet.

  • Re-watching Ep. 25. Random Thoughts.

Cinco de Mayo. No bourbon this week. Grand Gold Margaritas instead.

Highgarden! They definitely drink Margaritas in Highgarden.

Nothing like a catchy religion with a catchy prayer to heat things up. Hey, if I were about to battle The Hound, I’d pray too.

This Tormund is so … not funny. I wish he were, at least, a little bit funny. Just one “Har!” and I’ll shut up. I promise.

Someone’s wife said Ygritte is too skinny. There really wasn’t enough of the naked Ygritte in that scene for me to render a judicious opinion on the matter. I will require more naked Ygritte … to opine fairly.

I wouldn’t want Arya on my jury, but I wouldn’t mind her as my … well, let’s just say there are some people of which I need to be rid.

Qyburn is the Quentin Tarantino of Westeros.

The best pizza I ever had was prosciutto and fig. True story.

That Arya/Gendry scene was so touching and then, quickly, BAM! Karstark executes a couple of children. That was done deftly.

I’m assembling a Fantasy GoT Team. My first two picks are Arya and The Blackfish. Go ahead and pick Dany and hang around knotted in Mereen for a whole book.

The fetuses in the jars reminded me of the Independence Day aliens. I didn’t get it at first run. But, on second take — Independence Day. Selyse Baratheon — they don’t let her out much.

The general casting of this show is stellar. It is known. But the casting of the children is … (ask David J. Peterson for approval of this new adjective) badasstastick. And, yeah, she’s un-blonde.

Have you ever been in a public hot tub? It can be crowded. The next time I get in a public hot tub I’m just going to start, “…you’ve heard of wildfire? The Mad King was obsessed with it …” and watch that thing clear out. That speech is right up there with the Robert Shaw USS Indianapolis saga in Jaws. “Anyway, we delivered the bomb.”

If I had an Onion Knight I’d ask him for white onions, so I could make my fajitas for Cinco de Mayo.

The Freys are the thing to catch the conscience of the King.

Natalie Dormer’s nose moves when she talks, and it’s so flipping HOT!

Sansa vs. Littlefinger is, on some level, like Syrio vs. Arya. Epic mismatch. “Tomorrow, you will catch it…”

Tywin would do just fine in the Massachusetts legislature.

I’m prepared to give up Patchface if Kerry keeps singing.

  • Last week’s episode has leaks as well. Hopefully this doesn’t continue for the rest of the season.

  • I will be so pissed off if images of episode 9 leak, because I know I won’t be able to control myself and I will see them!

  • Ser Bug,

Tumblr is the worst. Apparently according to tumblr only GRRM is only allowed to write violence against woman when D&D do they are sexist pigs. The show has actually toned down the violence towards woman in the books especially sexual violence. Notice how a few weeks ago we didn’t see the Nights Watch raping Crasters daughters in the show like in the books. There is lots of stuff like that in the books that D&D don’t put in the show.

  • I was really starting to like Ros. I thought she was finally beginning to fit in with the show, and the little glimpses of personality I got, I liked. (Her scene in episode one where she tells Shae to watch out for Sansa with Littlefinger was lovely.) I hope it becomes clear in the coming episodes why she died — or, alternatively, that she set something relatively large into motion before she did — because I feel like people are really going to complain that she was useless after this.

  • I can’t find anything on westeros and I don’t have a tumblr can so even please let me know where to see these pics and the discussion on it?

  • Mike Chair,

If you really wanted to clear out a hot tub, you could show off your bloody wrist stump. Maybe a prosthetic stump. Cutting off your hand might hurt a bit.

  • I posted a link, but my comment was deleted, so it seems to be somehow against site policy. Just go where you know they will be, the discussion boards are on fire.

  • About the leaked spoiler pics, both last week’s and this week’s are from Russia, from some guy who calls himself ‘leakbro’. Someone on another site said that’s because there are no ‘intellectual property’ laws in Russia, so there’s no penalty, no crime committed if someone just takes someone else’s confidential intellectual property and plasters it all over the web.

  • JamesL,

Um you do understand there is a difference between writing that contains references to sexual violence and actual on-screen portrayal of graphic sexual violence, right? It’s shameful that you find tumblr’s criticism of the show’s sexist treatment of women more outrageous than the actual sexism.

  • Visennya,

And writing about killing is different than showing it onscreen. Does this mean the show supports murder?

  • Endless Giraffe:
    Visennya,

And writing about killing is different than showing it onscreen. Does this mean the show supports murder?

and incest, and torture, and keeping dead babies in jars

  • Well, this episode is gonna be ruffff. The tumblr shit has already begun. Let’s all just keep a clear head and remember what is the internet and what isn’t, and what is real and what isn’t

  • Turncloak:
    J,

The Kevan Lannister situation makes perfect sense. At this point he is still by Lancel’s side as he recovers from his blackwater wounds which is why we haven’t seen him

There’s many characters that haven’t been mentioned/appeared so far in the season. I feel Lancel should have been mentioned, that he’s recovering or not recovering or something. Kovarro was featured heavily last season by Dany’s season, I expected at least a couple of cameos of him or the dothraki themselves have been poorly shown. Dany should spend a little bit of screentime to not give the impression that they’re not too important to her anymore now she has her army. Kevan as mentioned. The mountain as well, a character who made such a strong impression in the first season should have been worked much better subsequently, however, if they’re keeping his profile low ’cause they’re planning to bring back Conan Stevens, then I’m totally ok with that. Pycelle is another that’s been notorious for his absence, and I read somewhere his character was going to be fleshed out this season but apparently not. Also Val and Dalla should had have an appearance or at least been mentioned. Since Val appears to be a future Jon’s love interest I would have love having her introduced before Ygritte’s dead when he was indifferent to her. I liked that in the books because it made it less obvious what the character was there for

Very excited about the episoee. Hope we get some Shireen scenes soon. Loved the kid!

  • JamesL,

For a second I thought you were exaggerating — certainly folks couldn’t be so daft about this — but I went and looked up the reaction on various message boards, Tumblr, etc. You’re spot-on with a vocal minority indeed.

For the rec, I consider myself a feminist and I have no problem with the concept of what happened (although I wish Ros could have stuck around longer so we could have gotten to know her more, sigh). Everyone in the show gets a shit deal eventually — men, women, nobles, peasants, children, animals, freepersons and slaves. Theon murdered two lowborn boys, but he almost got raped last episode. Jaime tried to buy his freedom from a group a bit lower on the totem pole than himself and received a stump. Daenerys freed slaves, but criminals heading to the Night’s Watch are expendable. Davos raised himself up with one of the most powerful persons in Westeros, but Ramsay treats peasant girls like they’re part of a significantly more frightening Hunger Games.

We see horrid stuff happening to everybody, and good stuff happening to everybody. I like this show and this book series because it’s one of the least sexist, least racist, least homophobic fantasies out there. (The characters might be sexist/racist/homophobic, but the narrative is not.) GRRM and D&D aren’t perfect, no, but if someone wants to blah about feminism, there are other fantasy/SF series that need a swifter kick in the pants.

  • Am really looking forward to the Wall scenes and the dinner between Jaime, Brienne and Roose, and am hoping for some bonding between Jon and Tormund!

A Ghost sighting would be nice, too, so that Jon can say goodbye to his old friend before he starts his climb. He’s gone without that wolf for far too long : (

  • Visennya,

I have yet to see any graphic depictions of sexual violence on this show, the closest thing was the violent spanking scene which wasn’t very graphic. Even these leaked pictures there is no sexual violence being shown. And the violence and sexual violence against woman in the books isn’t only just referenced. Also why is only okay for male characters to be tortured and abused? No one seems to have any issues the type stuff that is going down in Theons story.

  • JamesL,

I do (have issues with the Theon torture). As for why there aren’t any complaints about it, give it time, it’s only what, 3 episodes or so into the Theon torture at this point.

  • Lin Beifunk,

I don’t recall him getting raped in the books…. then again, I kinda skimmed over those chapters ’cause they made me queasy…

  • JamesL,

I’ll bet we won’t even see Ros’ death. Joffrey will be firing some arrows at something offscreen and it will then cut to his actual target. That would be both chilling and a less exploitative if you ask me. If Margaery is witness to the event, even better as it will form a catalyst to the PW. By killing Ros a character that they created D and D are saying this shit is going to get much much more real. And it is.

  • Joshua Taylor,

If they have Marg walk in just as Joffrey squeezes the trigger (or whatever one does to fire a crossbow… I wouldn’t know), it would be SO CHILLING… especially if Natalie Dormer manages to ace the facial expressions, and then turns and runs before Joffrey sees her… or better, the above with her AND Sansa walking in!

  • Turncloak,

If I made an error with Martin’s work here, I apologize. I (perhaps mistakenly) thought that Tywin’s Bro was fully immersed in that final scene last week with the Imp and his hottie Sister (the one with the great cheek bones).

  • JamesL,

Yes, my being upset over sexualized violence against one character means I can’t possibly be upset about violence against another. What the heck?

  • Nerd,

I would like to see someone more physically intimidating, someone worthy of the R.V. Like that dude that Brad Pitt skewered in the opening scene of Troy

  • Lin Beifunk:

This. Thank you! (Wish there was a like button)

  • Joshua Taylor,

I hope Marg is present for this scene or witnesses the results of it. It seems like they were foreshadowing it in an earlier episode.

  • Ser Bug,
Oh my god! My thoughts exactly. I’m pissed too. I like her. She was a good person that didn’t deserve such death. I also thought she was going to take the roll of Jeyne since her relationship to Theon was a bit fleshed out in the first season. What a waste of a great encounter + character development for a character that’s been around for so long. Now they’d have to introduce a new character for that. What a pity

  • wargsareawesome,

The scene was brilliant b/c it was set up perfectly. Like I said, HBO needs to start moving down that track. They need to take full advantage of the Kevan / Tywin relationship starting RIGHT NOW. IMO, it’s already getting late in the Game.

  • Regarding the leaks of tonight’s episode. the spoiler tags are for people who have read the books and are meant to hide future events in the books from non-readers.
The fetus jars weren’t a big spoiler but what is being discussed now is. Some of us might want to be surprised by the changes in the show.
Moderators, can you please consider banning discussion of leaked screencaps here.
Am I the only one who feels this way?

  • I really really really hate feminists.

So I just read another opinion about Ros’ death and other scenes of torture and abuse. Everything she said is true (although unwarranted since this is GoT, set in medieval times, so you kinda expect this type of stuff to happen) and then she finished her rant off by complaining that the Lords Kiss from last episode wasn’t well-done (which is the first complaint I heard about that scene).

    WTF?!?!

The world is always gonna lose when it comes it illogical feminists. They’ll complain that there is too much boobs being shown, yet they want a more graphic scene of cunninlingus? Huh?

  • J,

Though, I SUPPOSE they could just stick with Pycelle dying, and let Kevan live, but then the scene wouldn’t have nearly as much OOOMPH

  • Ser Bug,

So, is it the feminists you hate, or illogical people, because not all feminists are illogical (that would be a VERY small minority) and not all illogical people all feminists (many of them are misogynists)….? also, just because something is expected, that doesn’t make it right, or even acceptable. Honor-related abuse, for example is ‘expected’ in certain cultures, but that doesn’t make it right or acceptable.

  • natehilk,

He needs to meet up with Maege Mormont. They’ll battle, merrily skip off into the sunset, and make lots of furry babies. Team Maegmund forever!

  • Isabelle,

HOW HAVE I NOT HEARD OF THIS PAIRING BEFORE?!?!?!? I love it! (Though I could have done without the mental image of Tormund skipping…)

  • Ser Bug,

Hey, I’m a feminist, but I realize it’s not GoT’s/ASoIF’s job to be politically correct. If it claimed to be, we should hold it to that standard, but it’s merely entertainment. That it does have very rounded portrayals of women is a glorious extra.

  • I’ve always been a fan of Ros, but honestly I will not miss her character very much if the screencaps are accurate.

If she was going to take the place of Dontos I would have understood, but if Dontos is coming back as D&D hinted I do not see a role for Ros beyond this year. The only role I could see her taking is Alayaya ‘s part of being visited by Oberyn next year. I’m not sure that scene is needed frankly. I simply cannot see Ros as Jeyne, or Taena or Penny, or any other of theories some have come up with.

I’m not sure that Ros’s murder scene is needed or designed to influence the Tyrells or foreshadow the PW personally. More scenes of Joffrey being cruel may be redundant to some, but I think they are needed to beat the non-readers over the head with how Mad King Joffrey is reminiscent of Mad King Aerys.

Even with this slight speed bump, I’m seriously looking forward to tonight’s episode!

  • Nerd,

I need more details. How bad is the Ros scene? Do we actually see him kill her? Do we see some of the rangers fall while climbing the Wall and die? And how was the quality of the episode compared to the others this season?

  • Darquemode,

As a ASoIaF nerd, I see Joffrey as more of an Aerion Brightflame/Maegor the Cruel than an Aerys the Mad, but that’s just me… iirc, Aerys started out sane, it was only after the Defiance of Duskendale that he went ’round the bend…

  • wargsareawesome,

Yea, you’re right, I hate illogical people. But I call illogical women who are self-serving, feminists. Basically, I let the illogical ones tarnish the brand name of the ones trying to do good for their gender. Also, since there is a huge divide between illogical women and true “feminists”, I just now consider true “feminists” good people.

PS: Lin Beifunk seems like good people. She’s not one of those “type of people”.

  • Lin Beifunk,

Just wanna say, thank you for being logical. I’m sorry there is so many girls/women out there tarnishing your “feminist” brand. Keep up the good work.

  • Isabelle,

oooooooohhhhhh!!!! I like! *adds to list of favorite ASoIaF pairings, along with Robbcella, Sansa/Willas, and Gendrya.

    ETA: Sansa/Willas needs a couple-name. Winterose, perhaps?

  • The worst part about this spoiler stuff happening is that now I’m arguing with people about this on Tumblr. Why did I have to find out about this spoiler? I’m supposed to be doing other things right now (like getting high)!

    PS: Damn you curiosity.

  • wargsareawesome,

I love the idea of Robb and Myrcella, too! How much trouble do you think that would have prevented, had Myrcella remained in Winterfell to marry Robb, instead of Sansa going south to marry Joffrey?!

  • Isabelle,

uhhh… quite a lot of it… though Cersei would likely have thrown a fit about ‘Cella staying in Winterfell. Might I suggest the fanfic ‘Acts of Treason’ by secondstarontheleft? It can be found on fanfiction.net as well as on archiveofourown. There are also some very good Sansa/Willas fics by the same author

  • Thank you, and I mean this sincerely, for letting me know about Ros. I HATE surprises in general in life, and even though she was a show creation and was just used for exposition and such, I still liked her “I’m awesome, fuck you” attitude. Gives me a little time to prepare and mourn her.

As someone who aligns herself with a “feminist” (I hate that term, BTW) worldview, I also understand that GoT isn’t the real world and as such don’t hold it to the same moral and ethical standards. Because IT’S NOT REAL.

  • wargsareawesome,

Am in total agreement and thanks for the suggestion! : ) Perhaps delete that last note, though–mentions of fanfiction don’t tend to go over too well, so best to avoid them.

  • I’m not sure how everyone on WIC has missed this, since it seems to be common knowledge everywhere else, but there is no episode “leak” in the traditional sense. Nor are the screencaps from Russia. It’s simple: for the past 3 weeks (one person I’ve seen said the whole season, but I only know of the last 3 weeks), the episode has been available on HBO GO in Canada beginning early on Sunday. No reason for this is known, but it corroborates an earlier poster’s story about streaming the episode on Xfinity. Sometimes these streaming services make episodes available early, for whatever reason — so I would suggest checking any that you can. Especially if you live in Canada, evidently.

The “leaked” screencaps come from a reddit user who took them with a phone/camera. I have extensive knowledge of how to download leaked media, and I assure you that the episode is not available for download as of approximately 7:00 PM EST.

  • JamesL,
They don’t show him killing her. We get a convo where Littlefinger admits to Varys that Ros was a “bad investment” so he gave her to someone else… Then it cuts to Joff swaddling his crossbow like a baby and the camera pans over to Ros with a bunch of arrows in her tits.

    Joshua Taylor,

Ummmm, I put the spoiler tags at the beginning and end AND at the top it says spoilers below. What more do you want from me?

  • wargsareawesome,

No, to your mention of your martial arts prowess. The knives have been put away. For now.

But speaking of the episode, I don’t ever want to set eyes on a rabbit again.

  • wargsareawesome,

Oh–yep. I took it out, then put it back in again in a later comment. Wasn’t sure if I should at first. Am watching in another tab–should probably get back to it because I think they’re about to climb!!!!!!!

  • Endless Giraffe,
I recall him saying something about a ladder, yes.

    Joshua Taylor,
I put the tags at the beginning and end but something got screwed up. 2-5 (thats 4, not 6) are grayed out for some reason and when I edited the post it just kept doing the same thing. Hopefully the mods can fix this.

  • This is kind of cool. I don’t watch previews (a card carrying BwP am I). So instead of “climb” talk and whatever else others saw in the previews, everyone’s talking about Ros. This is the best use of Ros yet.

  • Mike Chair,

Some people are such sadists. Bet Joff is not the only one out there

  • I’ve tolerated discussion of the leaked screencaps from this morning, but I draw the line at detailed descriptions of exactly what happens in this episode. 99% of the people in this thread haven’t seen the episode yet and are here to discuss what they think might happen, not get spoiled on what will happen. If you’ve managed to see the episode early, please wait a few more hours before discussing it here. Thank you.

  • wargsareawesome,

Of course! Thank you. For a moment there I thought that Josla was implying that I was a sadist. :-) From what I’ve read in this post, Josla seems to be a Ros fan for whom Josla had such high hopes. Alas, her opening salvo in the “game” of thrones was to cross Litttlefinger, “the second most dangerous man in the Seven Kingdoms.”

  • Winter Is Coming,
I was a bit surprised earlier to see nobody discussing the leaks half the internet seems to be talking about, but as they say: your roof, your rule. You should probably add this point to “moderation and spoiler policy”.

  • Winter Is Coming,

Sorry! I assume you were talking about my comments, since they’ve been deleted. Not sure why it’s an issue if I use spoiler tags but Ill obey the rules all the same.

The last thing I want is to diminish someones viewing experience.

  • Re that major spoiler: I am glad I read it because it makes me so sad and this way I am prepared for it. :(

  • Getting close to 2100 EST now. Probably not a good time to raise this issue, but… any opinions on whether HBO can wrap this up before the actors’ 7 year contracts expire? and will GRRM be able to wrap it up in a timely fashion, or will he go Robert Jordan on the lot of us?

  • J,

You realize they did cast a Kevan Lannister, right? He was in Season 1 and 2. They wouldn’t have included him in the background of such scenes if they planned to eliminate him. I imagine they’re keeping his appearances brief for now to save on their actor budget – Kevan wouldn’t play a very important role until Season 4 at the earliest.

  • Hopefully we’ll get some good Bran scenes this episode. I loved his scenes in episode 2.

  • WompWomp,

The embargo should always be the time the show actually airs.

But which air time? I’m in AZ and don’t get to see it until 9 pm, which is 11 pm EST. I can’t even visit WIC on Sundays between 7 pm and 10 pm because everyone else has already seen it and are talking about the details.

Just saying there is no way to pick a time and please everyone. I’ll just stay away during that window and recommend others on the west coast of the U.S. do the same, unless they don’t mind some spoilage.

  • Nerd,

I just wish there was a place we could discuss all the spoilers in peace, not hear with the risk of spoiling those who do not want to, not westeros.org with annoying purists and nazi mods. I think that they should create a Pre-Episode leaks/spoilers thread here for discussion.

  • Majority of fans during season 1: “Urgh, Ros, WHY does she have screentime? I hate the character.”

Majority of fans during season 2: “Urgh, Ros, WHY does she have screentime? I hate the character.”

Majority of fans during season 3: “Urgh, Ros, WHY does she have screentime? I hate the character.”

Fans reacting to her death in season 3, episode 6: “Ros, my lady, we hardly knew ye!”

Yes, I’m exaggerating and generalising, but that’s where the fun is at :)

People have been discussing the leaked screencaps off and on throughout the day. I guess if the episode leaking is going to be a regular thing, I may have to add rules on early discussion to our commenting policy. It only happened once last season, but it seems like it might be an every week thing now.

The problem is a lot of people have spoilers totally turned off since they’ve read all of the books. But they aren’t expecting to have the details of an episode spoiled for them before it even airs. So for those people, let’s hold off on the detailed discussion until after 10PM ET. Thanks for your cooperation!

  • Winter Is Coming,

As I was suggesting in my previous post, why not create a separate thread a day or 2 before the episode for discussion of leaks and spoilers? People could just choose if they want them or not.

  • Endless Giraffe,

this does seem like a decent solution, because lets face it; people will post spoilers either way, so it could be safer to make a designated place for them to do it.

  • Winter Is Coming,

Again, you still won’t be protecting anyone on the West Coast but I understand you can’t please everyone. However, one thing you might consider is using a kind of prefix to posts that indicate the kind of spoiler like other sites do such as “[Book spoilers]”, “[TV Spoilers]”, “[Book and TV spoilers]” and of course “[No spoilers]”.

This would give people a guide about what they can post and what they want to go into. Then no one can complain because it was VERY clear before they even go into the comments.

  • LordDavos12,

Nooooooooooo! Not her, not him, not that. Warging into Ghost, not fatally injured, healed by a White Walker, whatever – anything but that!

  • Winter Is Coming,

That makes perfect sense. Although, like Ms. D said, it really only applies to the East Coast. Not sure what a good solution would be though. It seems a bit ridiculous to make a separate post where spoilers can be discussed, like a few others suggested.

  • Ms. D. Ranged in AZ,
    Nerd,

Unfortunately we can’t really delay discussion to accommodate West Coast or European viewers. Too many people have already seen it at that point. Posting a recap and opening up discussion immediately after the East Coast airing is pretty much industry standard. So that’s what we do here too.

  • Is Tom Bombadil in this one finally? I’ve been waiting 2.5 seasons! Because if not, the entire series is ruined for me. Damn you D&D !!!!!11111

  • wargsareawesome,

No you’re right, especially Maegor IMO.

I’m just not sure that the TV show will get into too much detail on Maegor or Aerion. Not enough for it to stick in the minds of most viewers. Aerys’s cruelty (even more than his madness) has been spoken of a few times already and I’m sure it will be brought up again with Oberyn arriving next year.

My guess is Aerys II will be the only mad Targaryen king to stick in most viewers’ minds so I used him as the comparison.

  • Richard,

Oh! Tom Bombadil is a merry fellow! Bright blue his jacket is and his boots are yellow! None has ever caught him yet, for Tommy is the master, his songs are stronger songs, and his feet are faster! (yes I just did that from memory)

  • Bah, now I know how the Unsullied feel when people are always spoiling things for them. No bueno.

  • WOOO!!!! :)

    wargsareawesome:

  • I ended up skimming half of the posts to this point because of spoiler things from tonight’s episode. I always show spoilers because I’ve read the books so I know the book spoilers and what will probably come in the show. I don’t expect to see episode spoilers before it airs in a thread not specific for that. If people are going to go out of their way to find information from leaks they should be willing to wait half a day to discuss with the patient people.

  • Winter Is Coming,

I appreciate the explanation. All I can picture is you frantically combing through the comments every week trying to delete the spoilers. I don’t envy that at all.

  • wargsareawesome,
I thought the giant rabbits were a bit over the top but otherwise loved him. However, that does not make up for the loss of Tom Bombadil.

  • wargsareawesome,

I would love it, but will not hold my breath.
I guess Dunk and Egg are a possibility unlike Robert’s Rebellion though… so maybe??

    Off topic completely…

I made tacos for dinner and just realized it’s Cinco de Mayo!
I had not made a connection, but now after seeing a news flash….. Hmmm.
Dammit I feel like a victim of subliminal massagers… or at least news saturation.

  • btw, I was re-reading ADWD, and I noticed it was (partially) dedicated to WiC!

  • This will be a good and dynamic episode is my prediction. The last two have disappointed me. Things have been building up to a boil…for what is coming on right now! The pot is about to foam over!

  • I feel like I missed something but why did non-book readers call themselves the “unsullied” before they knew about the unsullied…

  • I am so jealous right now, im at work and cant watch the episode for another hour!

God i really should have switched shifts, the wait is killing me, not only that but my sisters already started texting me saying ‘omg its so amazing, omg, omg, you wish you were here’ i may be up for murder tonight..

    Enjoy guys!

  • Bing:
I feel like I missed something but why did non-book readers call themselves the “unsullied” before they knew about the unsullied…

Fairly sure they didn’t start calling themselves that until after Game of Oz coined it during his S03E01 recap.

  • I feel dirty for watching this episode an hour early.

But that also means one more hour I have to wait for next week’s episode, assuming it doesn’t leak early again on Xfinity.

  • Michel:
What happened before the Jon Snow scene with Ygritte? I wasn’t able to watch

Sam sang a song to Gilly/baby, Osha and Meera squabbled, and Jojen had a seizure while sleeping

  • Carls:
This will be a good and dynamic episode is my prediction. The last two have disappointed me. Things have been building up to a boil…for what is coming on right now! The pot is about to foam over!

The last two have disappointed you. The two best episodes in the entire 3 seasons.

    Wow. You’re a great fan.

  • wait… are they turning the Many-Faced God and R’hllor into the same thing?

  • wargsareawesome,

well if they are, it does simply things for the show. I always found it weird that Jaqen worshiped the red God instead of the many-faced God, even though he is a faceless man

  • wargsareawesome,

I really hate this stupid storyline taking up so much screen time. The casual viewers are probably even more annoyed by it because they have no idea why they are being forced to watch this stuff.

  • ok, we get it, ‘Boy’ is a jerk, Theon is being tortured. Can we move on — oh, we have.

  • Ser Tahu:

well if they are, it does simply things for the show. I always found it weird that Jaqen worshiped the red God instead of the many-faced God, e

That’s how it is in the book.

  • Michel:
It’s impossible that I’m the only one that is loving Theon’s arc.

I like it but I hate how loud his screaming is compared to everything else. I had to turn up the volume for the scenes before his, then when Theon started to scream, I had to turn the volume way down, only to turn it back up again to hear the Robb scene afterwards.

  • Back to the previously discussed spoilers… I remember reading a while ago that apparently GRRM liked aspects of the Ros character in the show and was planning to write her into future books. At the bottom of the article:

    http://gameofthrones.wikia.com/wiki/Ros

Although to be fair, the article doesn’t link to a source on that. I wouldn’t say it’s impossible though – we do have confirmed quotes that GRRM likes Natalia Tena’s portrayal of Osha (despite being quite different to book Osha) and he’s expanding her role in future books based on new ideas her on-screen work has given him. Remind me to try and google where I saw that…

Maybe Ros will do a “reverse Irri” and show up in the book AFTER her death on the show? Then book purists could rant retrospectively!

  • Ser Tahu: I know, and it was confusing…

I wouldn’t say so. The man Arya met was just posing as Jaqen from Lorath, so”Jaqen” worships the Red God, even though the Faceless man playing Jaqen does not. It’s just an act.

  • The time passed so fast, for me it only had been 20 minutes of episode. Nice episode, but IMO the “worst” of the 6 episodes of these season. But still, very good.

    8.5/10

  • Hey wait a minute! Did Loras describe a dress as having ‘French’ sleeves? Where is Westeros is France???

  • What a fantastic final scene with Jon/Ygritte.

But poor Ros. I really liked her. :(

  • Ok, I’ve been enjoying the Theon stuff and I love “Boy”. Buy I wish they weren’t dragging out this mystery.

  • To actually have a Sam scene was wonderful. And the Dragonglass dagger was awesome.

But Iwan Rheon! Knocked it out of the park for me. Alfie Allen was good too.

  • OH YEAH!!! Ros is dead!!! Doing the happy dance!!! This episode went from bad to still bad, but only a little bit, thanks to the best moment of the show since the Blackwater episode. Joffery is the best king ever!

  • “You’d think you’d have learned your lesson about overplaying your…

    … position.”

Oh, Roose Bolton, you joker, you.

  • First impression: One of my least favorite episodes in the entire series. I usually immidiately rewatch the eps after they air, but i don’t even feel like doing it with this one.

  • Suuuuuuuuuu..uuu…uuuuch a good episode! It’s all coming together now.

Love the scene with Melisandre and the BWOB. I love when we get a sense from the TV series of things that may still be yet to come from the book series.

  • Ser Tahu:
    wargsareawesome,

well if they are, it does simply things for the show. I always found it weird that Jaqen worshiped the red God instead of the many-faced God, even though he is a faceless man

I don’t think Jaqen actually worships the Red God. I always interpreted the Many-Faced god as sort of encompassing all the different gods/religions out there. Jaqen only mentions that they owe the Red God 3 deaths because they were about to be burned to death in the cage; hence the deaths belong to the Red God. If Arya had rescued them from drowning, Jaqen would have said they owe the Drowned God 3 deaths, etc.

  • I cried.

I haven’t cried in any other scene of all the previous 25 episodes and yet Ros, a very unnecessary character, dies and I cry. God.

That was vicious, that was shocking, that was horrifying, that made me hate Joffrey in a way the books never did, in a way I never hated him before. That was powerful TV, TV at its best, that was Game of Thrones, not A Song of Ice and Fire, no, that was Game of Thrones, the TV show, at it’s best. F…

  • wargsareawesome:
What, exactly, was Sansa crying at?

That she has to marry Tyrion now, instead of Loras. The ‘awkward’ thing he was starting to tell here there towards the end.

Kind of a shame that conversation happened offscreen. Would have liked to see how the actors handled that one.

  • IMHO – one of the worst episodes of the season. It was still good though and some good climatic parts but it just felt like a weak filler, AND it started at :02 and ended at :55 , what the F HBO enough of your crappy promo’s for upcoming shows.

  • Lots of great lines this episode. I loved seeing the climbing of the wall and finally feeling that bond between Jon and Ygritte, but it doesn’t compare to the last two. I suppose now I understand why they’re keeping it to 10 eps per season. This just felt like filler.

  • Ros is dead, the old gods and the new be praised. Best part of an overall horrid episode was seeing her body. Yes! Yes! Yes!

  • wargsareawesome,

Tyrion told her offscreen that she is suposed to marry him, and then she leaves LF ship going away, and she is regreted because she didn’t leave with him. For me it was obvious.

  • David Bousquet:
IMHO – one of the worst episodes of the season. It was still good though and some good climatic parts but it just felt like a weak filler, AND it started at :02 and ended at :55 , what the F HBO enough of your crappy promo’s for upcoming shows.

I knew there would be this hyperbolic reaction from some. However, I think it was a very strong setup episode. A filler episode has no forward momentum. This has nothing but forward momentum.

  • My cat Dracarys just neutralized my #1 enemy the centipede. Name your pets after ASOIAF if you want them to be awesome.

  • Question for those celebrating Ros’ death: What, exactly, did she do to deserve it? ‘Existed’ is not an acceptable answer.

  • Ros the Ubiquitous Red-Headed Whore is … no more. She is Legend. She is History. She screwed everyone in the Seven Kingdoms. Thus, the only person left to screw was herself.
As I’ve said many times before, I love, love, love Esmé, but I had no use for Ros.

So, while I say good riddance to Ros, I hope Esmé winds up on so many other series (HBO or otherwise) ripe for her arrival. She’d fit nicely in Boardwalk Empire, True Blood, or The Newsroom, to name a few.

  • Another amazing episode!!! Holly shit I’ve got to pick up both my jaw and my balls of the floor! God I hate that fucking Jeoffrey and that cunt Littlefinger…poor Ros…a big middle finger to all the Ros haters! I will miss Esme Bianco!

  • Interesting change with only 4 people making the top of the wall. If I recall, Mance sent 120 people in the book, led by the Magnarr of Thenn, and the group of them led an attack on Castle Black. A small group fell, but most made it to the top when the climbers lowered a ladder for Jon, Ygritte and the rest. I They can’t really attack Castle Black with only four?

  • Since D&D know the final of the series, when Melisandre tells Arya that they will meet again, was that a spoiler for us? Makes me wonder about it.

  • cozmeesah:
    wargsareawesome,

    Are you serious?

Tyrion just told her about them being betrothed.

That and she’s looking at the ship thinking “he just left me here.” But of course she doesn’t know if or when he’ll be back.

  • Michel:
    NewJeffCT,

I don’t think only 4 survived, since we can see in some trailers many wildings running in the South of the Wall

There were probably some more wildlings off to the side of the screen that we couldn’t see. On the left side.

  • Mike Chair:
She screwed everyone in the Seven Kingdoms.

not true. I doubt she screwed Loras. Or Renly. Or Varys. Or Ned Stark. Or… lots of people

  • Michel:
Since D&D know the final of the series, when Melisandre tells Arya that they will meet again, was that a spoiler for us? Makes me wonder about it.

Good question. Of course Melsandre gets things wrong sometimes doesn’t she.

  • You know, I don’t care what everyone else thinks. In really like this happy crazy “Boy”. Yes, the mystery is taking way way to long to play out but F- it. And really Theon, use context clues!

  • Michel,

Yeah, for sure that’s what happened. That’s why Sansa was crying. Not a great judge of character, our Sansa.

  • Olenna fucking OWNED Tywin. It took all of my strength not to scream with joy at that scene. Gods, Diana Rigg is KILLING IT this season.

  • WTF’d at “French sleeves”, otherwise a good episode. Maybe they’re “french” like french fries are french, idk.

  • Poor Ros :C

So, curtain call for Esmé Bianco? The death of her character was rather surprising.

  • I’m glad they took Gendry, he has no relevance later in the books anyway, and it’s much better than having to throw Stannis’s floating miscarriages into a fire. However having Edric storm still would have been the way to go.

  • That was interesting, they killed two birds with one stone with Melisandre. The Edric and the witch on the hill birds.

  • Good EP. Theon story such a waste of screen time. Really, is this supposed to be about the unknown guy hunting the Stark boys? Kinda makes the whole Bolton story line in DwD irrelevant which leaves a great big hole to fill.
I guess that is why Benioff et alii get the big bucks.

  • Wow. I thought this episode was superb. To me, this is where the show truly came into its own as an adaptation that stands alone. I felt the changes that were made were not only justified, but ingenious. The horn, Gendry, Ros, wow. It all works beautifully. To me, who has read the books, this show is a work of storytelling genius and this episode proved that as well or better than any other.

  • It seems all of my favorite episodes are the episodes people dislike. This one is probably my favorite of the season, which is really saying something. There was not one scene in its entirety that I found myself looking on the #gameofthrones tumblr tag out of, for lack of a better word, boredom. Even the Theon scene was bearable.

I thought it was a fantastic episode overall with tense and awkward scenes and I loved it. So sad about Ros. I actually liked her new development in the show and saw her going far-ish. Anyways, cannot wait until next week…a bear? A BEAR! All covered in hair!

  • wargsareawesome,

Personally I’m just glad she’s gone off the show, however they did it is not important to me. Its just a show, its not like any of us wished actual death on an actual person yeesh

  • dmf,

I know, it’s just that the ‘Ding dong, the whore is dead’ vibe was getting to me.

  • Ser Tahu,

Pretty sure Jaqen Hagar worshipped the Red God.

Of course, there is a Faceless Assassin in A Clash of Kings who wears a face of a man named Jaqen Hagar who worships the Red God.

  • Michel,

what through me off was that they went straight from the Ros scene to that, so I was like, ‘did Joff show her the body or something?’

  • People celebrating a cruel and violent death are sick, and deserve to be called as such. You’ve lost some of your humanity if you can celebrate a scene like that.

Re: Melisandre and Arya, I thought it may be a reference to seeing the fake Arya years down the road (which, to be fair, hasn’t happened in the books, but seems like it may).

  • Man, what a fantastic episode. It made me feel like, so many little things I’ve read, speculations on where things are going, character’s arcs etc., I can kind of see how things are gonna play out now, and feel like the creators totally know what they’re doing.

  • NewJeffCT:

View the arrival to the top of the wall scene again. In the distance, another rope-team is getting to the top. Mance ordered Tormund to take 20 people. I saw 4 teams of 4 begin the climb. I assume at least 8 made it to the top. That group size will be more manageable for filming in future episodes, though I admit it won’t be an alarming force arriving at Castle Black from behind…

  • Our Blades are Sharp,

Only book readers who know who Ramsay is will enjoy this mess of a storyline. They need to write the show for the casual viewers. It isn’t even much of a arc either, this plot has gotten a significant amount of screen time and has gone nowhere and has been pointless. Theon has been getting as much screen time, sometimes even more, than some of the very important characters in ASOS. If this is what they had planned for Theons arc this season than all they needed to do was have 1 scene with Theon being tortured by some mysterious guy in a basement. Why have so many if they are not advancing anything about that plot when we could be spending time with more important characters. We are right back where we started in the beginning of the season with Theon being trapped in tortured in mysterious persons basement.

  • This episode was not one of my favorites. It had 3 good scenes. One, the deal with the Freys & a nice touch for Robb to tell Edmure that he will not forget that Edmure is paying for his sins. The Blackfish remains awesome.
Two, the scene with Jaime, Roose and Brienne. Well played, Roose. Well played…especially reminding Jaime of where his hubris got him before.
Three: Loved Olenna owning Tywin and her breaking his pen.
I really could have done without Theon and Boy. I just cannot stomach the torture.
Littlefinger is an evil toad and Joffrey and Boy should start a bowling league together. Poor Ros. But at least we were spared seeing her get shot many times with a crossbow. I know not many were fans of the character but I thought Esme did a fine job with the role.
A good touch not showing Tyrion tell Sansa bad news and just seeing her reaction to it & Littlefinger’s ship sailing away.

  • wargsareawesome,

I don’t know. I was expecting her to die in the place of Lothar Brune when LF escapes with Sansa. I didn’t expected her to die so soon, I never disliked her character.

  • Andrew:
People celebrating a cruel and violent death are sick, and deserve to be called as such. You’ve lost some of your humanity if you can celebrate a scene like that.

    Exactly my point.

  • wargsareawesome,

She was crying because Tyrion told her “the news”. She is crying because she isn’t going to be marrying Loras – she’s going to be marrying Tyrion.

  • Solid episode. Breaks this season’s trend of every episode topping the one that came before, I’d put it about on par with episode 22 which I loved anyway. But nothing major happened. I continue to love Theon’s storyline, and Sam/Gilly were adorable. Robb’s scene was great.

I don’t really have things that I dislike about it. It’s just the things I liked I didn’t like quite as much as previous weeks generally.

  • Kate,

Also, the ship that was sailing off was Littlefinger’s, I believe. She lost both of her chances at an escape.

  • Tom M,

How does it make Bolton stuff in DWD irrelevant?

I’m guessing that Ramsay will either go off or send off men to hunt down Bran and Rickon – they’ll fail so later on down the line when we get to DWD stuff when Roose wants Winterfell, they will keep the secret that they’re alive to themselves and fake an Arya to marry to Ramsay.

  • What she did was cross the wrong people. And since when do people get what they deserve in ASOIAF?

Liked the ep, including the Ros death. Looking forward to seeing where they’re going with the changes from the books.

  • Rubahtics,

my problem is not that she died — I’ve come to expect that from GoT — but that people are CELEBRATING HER DEATH! That’s just WRONG

  • Andrew:
Re: Melisandre and Arya, I thought it may be a reference to seeing the fake Arya years down the road (which, to be fair, hasn’t happened in the books, but seems like it may).

That reminds me — the meeting of Mel and Arya makes it likely that the misdirection with Mel’s vision of the girl on the horse coming to the Wall / Mel sending Mance to Winterfell for Jeyne!Arya will be handled differently on the show. How will Mel get the Arya/Alys Karstark thing so wrong in the future if she’s met Arya?

  • Most people who “hate” this episode seem to be in the “NEVER CHANGE A THING FROM THE BOOKS” camp. Well too bad you can’t enjoy it specially considering it will only get “worse”.

I love the books and I love the show, including this episode, which for me was the second strongest of the season.

  • wargsareawesome:
    Rubahtics,

my problem is not that she died — I’ve come to expect that from GoT — but that people are CELEBRATING HER DEATH! That’s just WRONG

Come on. It’s a TV show, and she was playing a fictional character. It’s not like Esmé really died. Some people didn’t like her character.
    Take a chill pill.

  • Oh, and yea, best Littlefinger’s episode of the show. He finally showed in his actions and manner just how dangerous he is. I loved the acting!

  • All I will say is that if you’re a book reader and don’t LOVE Theon’s arc this season I don’t want to know you…Ramsay is perfect…best book to screen portrayal yet…and he’s just getting started

  • Michel,

Lothar Brune doesn’t die during that particular event, that would be Ser Dontos

I feel like people should type ‘relatively’ right before they type ‘bad’ when describing the episodes. I thoroughly enjoyed this episode.

  • I’m neither a fan of Ros nor a Ros hater, but damn that was a cold way for her to make her exit. Left me slightly creeped out for several minutes after the show ended.

  • Kate,

Not quite. She is crying because she realizes she should have gone with LF as she watches his ship leave the harbor.

  • I really liked Ros and Esme Bianco, and I think it’s a pity that she’s been subject to so much fan hate (the negative side of fandom has really shown its ugly head when it comes to Ros).

She was far more interesting and a better actress than some other actresses on the show (whose names I won’t mention; no need to offend these actors in public). Bianco was perfect for the role: She was not only beautiful, but she was also charming and elegant. I will miss her character.

I must admit that her scene was both disturbing and sensual at the same time. Seeing such a beautiful woman murdered like that, with her nightgown and body ripped apart by arrows, was a sad sight. Imagine how it must have felt suffering a slow death like that. She must have been in a lot of pain. Ironically, there was no sign of pain in her facial expression, but her dead, empty stare was unsettling enough. Ros was one of the truly kind characters in the show. What did she do to deserve that? I knew that Joffrey was cruel, but he’s obviously a sadist as well.

Please do a “Curtain Call”-article on Esme Bianco! I think she deserves some credit, even though many people disliked her character. I know that many people liked her as well, so it would be a nice opportunity for her fans to thank her!

  • Love the hypocrisy. The whole site was celebrating Viserys’ gruesome gold crowning death and no one gave an f about that. All of a sudden we’re sick psychopaths for doing the same for Ros lmao. I am woman hear me roar!

  • Ok, I’m almost scaring myself with how much I’m enjoying Boy. He’s just so delightfully evil and so happy about it.

Buddy, reactions like yours are the reason we harbor these paranoid suspicions.

Viserys was actively pointing a sword at a baby when he was killed. Ros was… occasionally naked for no reason. The fact that you’re equating the two is the reason why we’re creeped out.

  • Maybe next week we can see Joffrey do that to all the Ros-haters. I’d enjoy it.

  • wargsareawesome: The Purist you, ser, are one sick person

Just because I was beating my meat during the Ros’ death scene, doesn’t mean I’m a sicko. When I mean “beating my meat”, I meant tenderizing my steaks. Honest! But seriously, I had no problems with the actress, Esmé Bianco, in fact she’s a better actress than the one who plays Shae. It’s really more that most of her scenes does nothing for me, so my blame goes to D&D than the actress herself for making her a lame character.

That’s because what happened to Viserys was not that surprising, given his bad treatment of Dany and the disrespect he showed to the Dothraki. To a certain degree, he sealed his own fate. What happened to Ros was more surprising and she didn’t deserve that kind of brutal fate. I believe even many of her ‘haters’ will admit that.

I am woman hear me roar!

Well, do you think it’s surprising that we don’t see more women and children being killed on TV shows or in the movies? There’s no logical or rational reason for it, but there’s one emotional rationale behind it: People are not accustomed to seeing women and children killed on TV/movies, even though it’s just fiction. Men are being killed and tortured in the most brutal ways in action/horror-films nowadays, but we’re used to it. It’s more disturbing when it happens to a child or a woman. That’s why more people react like this now, while they might have cheered when Viserys died.

Perhaps in 50 years — when today’s audience have gotten even more accustomed to screen violence (compare today’s ratings with those 20-30 years ago, and you can see that they’re gradually dropping) — it will be more common to show women being raped, tortured and killed on TV shows or movies (I hope not!). But today it’s not really considered to be acceptable in most circumstances (there are exceptions of course, consider thematic movies about rape, such as Irreversible).

Oh, BTW, I forgot to mention that mixing sex and violence is a big “no no”. Censorship in many countries is very strict when it comes to “sexualized violence”: You can have one or the other, but if you mix it, it’s considered speculative and in “bad taste”. Perhaps this view will change over time (just look at how much more violent today’s movies are, and how much more sex/nudity there’s on TV compared to 30 years ago). I’m not necessarily saying that this is all bad, but that’s the situation today.

    IMPORTANT:
I’m not saying that the Ros-scene was bad: In fact, it was emotionally effective, because I really felt for her character (it was not just that she was killed, it was the way she was killed). I’m just trying to explain why people react the way they do (in comparison to Viserys’s fate).

  • Greg,

I love the Queen of Thorns as much as anyone and I really liked the scene but I am not so sure about that. In the end, Tywin got what he wanted didn’t he?
Consent to marry Loras to Cersei. While on the other hand, the Queen of Thorns agreed to something that she was arguing against.

Tywin said that she could consent to the marriage or he was going to induct Loras into the Kinsguard anf therefore deprive the Tyrells of their heir and preventing Loras from marrying anyone or having children.

The Queen of Thorns ends up breaking his pen and complimenting him about living up to his reputation which implies her consent. So if he got what he wanted all along and she consented to something she was previously arguing against, then who “owned” whom?

  • JonSnow,

I get your assessment, but I don’t know that I agree with it.

I’d argue that people get upset because they see *a lot more* women being killed on TV than men. Think about slasher movies and crime shows and superhero shows. People worry because on some level, it seems like seeing women getting killed in sexualized ways is what viewers want (or, at least, what people seem to think viewers want).

Look how Jaime lost his hand and Viserys died and Tywin will die. They were all fully clothed at the time, except for Tywin, who wasn’t exactly in lingerie. None of them were tied to a bed like Ros. The violence wasn’t sexualized — it was just violent. Compare that to Ros or Shae being strangled in bed by her lover or Stannis choking Melisandre while she just totally surrenders to it.

I’m not saying that men enjoy sexualized violence more than women — I’m saying that the people who make TV shows and books sure seem to think that they do.

  • I wonder if that will be the same crossbow Tyrion uses to kill Tywin? If so, it adds a whole other level to the Ros death scene.

  • Andrew:
People celebrating a cruel and violent death are sick, and deserve to be called as such. You’ve lost some of your humanity if you can celebrate a scene like that.

Ummm and how will you feel when people celebrate Joffery’s death? Or Tywin’s, or another character that you dislike? It’s a TV show with fictional characters, while I’m not one of the haters of Ros, I see nothing wrong with some people happy with the scene. Look back at how many TV or movie characters that you hated where you celebrated their onscreen death. It’s fictional everyone, lets not get all worked up about it and you hating on someone’s posting of them hating a tv character doesnt make it any better.

    Ms.

I gladly wait. I’m PST time zone here, and pass up on any unintentional spoilery
by visiting later during the recap. Thanks for the choices here on the site, however
even if this were not so, everyone could make their own individual choice of
    when to tune in.

  • The end of this episode was completely ridiculous. I loved parts of the episode — Olenna/Tywin, Sam/Gilly, Tyrion/Misc., Melisandre/Thoros — but the last scene was just… not Game of Thrones. That was some action movie. That was Titanic. That was Hollywood, where the build up results in exactly what the audience expects it to. Orell is cutting them loose (I’m lumping the last two scenes with Jon and Ygritte, I know) — Is Jon going to make it? Will he get there in time? Oh, my, gosh I DON’T KNOW! He swings once! Twice! Three times! And… SAFE! YES! I was so afraid there for a minute that Jon and Ygritte would die!

Then, the scene drags out even more. Ygritte struggles, pulling herself up on to the ledge. “Take my hand!” Jon screams, echoing Jack from Titanic as he pulls Rose/Ygritte back onto the ship/ice ledge. Will she reach his hand? WILL SHE? Oh… yes. Well. That’s that.

As they stood looking at one another on the wall, I glanced at my wife, seeing my own thoughts mirrored in her eyes: “Please don’t let them kiss, this scene is already cheesy enough.” Then they started kissing. I said, “Please, please, don’t let it end like this. This can’t be the end! They have to have Sam and Gilly, to bring it full circle! They have to.” And worst of all was the horrible ridiculous soundtrack playing, like this was some blockbuster film. As the credits began to roll, I hoped the music would change. It didn’t.

Worst episode of the series. Not because I haven’t seen its like before. I have. But never on this show.

  • katana,

Don’t worry, the scene is cheesy but it will make the end of their relationship that much sweeter…let them have a moment of happiness. What else would a couple in love do who just escaped death and reach the tope of a monumental structure? Just shrug their shoulders and move on?

  • JamesL,

Ramsay will become a very important character. When the Jof dies he will be the most hateful character on the show. They need to build him up, not introduce him out of the blue all of a sudden.

  • Andrew:

    .

You realize this is a tv show and thus FICTION… right?

  • Great episode ruined by that OTT “I’m top of the world ma” scence with Jon and Redser at the end.
Would have been much better to have the mushy scene first with Littlefinger talking away over it and then end with Ros doing her pin-cushion impression. Would have left a much strong impression that way.
Some great scenes in the episode but a lot of paving the way for the ramp up to the season’s end me thinks!
