Interview Round-up: Video Edition

This has been a long two weeks, but we are getting close to Sunday now. Tomorrow we will resume our usual anticipatory posts with Oz’s Looking Forward as well as the episode 29 preview. In the meantime, enjoy these recent video interviews with Game of Thrones cast, including Iwan Rheon speaking (somewhat) openly about his role for the first time.

Spoiler note: A bit of a S3 spoiler in this one, Unsullied viewers should avoid!

Winter Is Coming: That Liam and Maisie interview is all kinds of adorable.

  • Is Liam Maisie’s guardian when they go to all these things? They’re always together it seems.

  • Maisie Williams and Liam Cunnigham are my two favourite actors in the show so its great to see them interviewed together

  • The interviewer doing Iwan used the term “Unsullied” for the non-book readers!! Oz must love this. :D

  • Did Alflie dye his hair for Theon’s physical transformation, or some other project?

  • Spoiler note: A bit of a S3 spoiler in this one, Unsullied viewers should avoid!

Presumably that refers to the Meera interview? (Haven’t watched it yet!)

  • There are some minor spoilers on a lot of these because quite a few actors mention that they’re going to be in Season 4! In fact I avoided Oona’s interview for just this reason :)

  • Winter Is Coming: Yes.

Yep I see the one you mean. I’d entirely forgotten about [thing she referred to]. It was fun to learn she and Hannah (who plays Gilly) went to Cambridge together – I’ve been here since 2010 so according to Wikipedia I must have overlapped with them for a year or two! Clearly I should have made some more actor friends…

  • Mira’s actress said that Gilly and her had a scene together. That means we get the Sam&Bran crossover this season!

  • old news to some I’m sure but I just found out the other day that Theon is Lily Allen’s brother haha

  • Blunted:
Did Alflie dye his hair for Theon’s physical transformation, or some other project?

He’s a chameleon with a penchant for dying his locks. In S1, he appeared in
a scene handing something to Eddard Stark , with blond hair. Thereafter
it was medium blond. I believe he’s given onscreen interviews in different
shades and degree of curliness to his hair as well. He’s clearly having fun.

  • Adam,

Yessir…. The movement spreads. Thanks for pointing that out, and for pointing out the spoilers on the other interview. My virginity must remain intact.

  • These are fun to watch, but the Ellie Kendrick interview has spoilers for ADWD (I think, since I’ve only read up to AFFC and I haven’t read what she said about the children of the forest yet). Damn. I hope that’s not anything major.

  • Liam and Maisie interview is awesome ! They rock ! Two of my favourite actors in the show ! Although they are all my favourite actors, hehehe !

Charles Dance is really impressive, even in interviews and in videos… wow ! He’s just… there !

Ellie’s one was really interesting and she seems really adorable !

And Alfie is good ol’ Alfie ! Always smiling, kidding and rocking !

And of course, none of us want to meet “this bastard !”

  • Iwan: Refering to his character as a Bastard, win!

Oona: Answeiring with real world location when asked where she wants her character to go? What? And not seeing Sean Beans characters death come? Come on?

  • The Charles Dance interview (as always) has an inadvertent spoiler that he is preparing to film season 4 and thus survives the season, which may seem minor to some people but if you want to stay completely unsullied, I’d stay away.

  • Damn meera’s gotta be one of the single most painful characters on the show

  • I posted that already on another thread, but I thinks it fits better here:

Very funny panel with Lena Headey and Peter Dinklage from the Calgary Expo in four parts. The upload is a month old, but I haven’t seen it and the view counts are pretty low, so chances are many here haven’t as well. The are some spoilers in it, manly one big one where an audience member really fucks up!

  • Saint: Damn. I hope that’s not anything major.

Regarding Ellie’s interview. I wouldn’t call it a major spoiler since it’s so vague. It’s kinda like saying.. there’s going to be a wedding in Season 3. Well.. there are lots of weddings hitting S3 and beyond. I actually had to think about her statement for me to go.. “oh yeah.” Ellie is awesome and adorable. Love the Reeds!

  • Harry OD,
Yeah, lots of people suspected as much because of a scene in one of the trailers: You see Meera, Jojen, Bran and Hodor looking all scared to a door opening and some black figure popping in, probably Sam

  • Anyone looking to remain totally Unsullied should avoid the 2nd half of the Maisie/Liam interview, as there is a minor spoiler for Arya’s story going forward.

  • Mage:
old news to some I’m sure but I just found out the other day that Theon is Lily Allen’s brother haha

Indeed. And her song “Alfie” is about him. :)

  • Michel,

I’m kinda bummed that it won’t be ‘Jaime Lannister sends his regards’ in the show. I don’t know why they felt the need to change it to ‘The Lannisters send their regards’. Who cares if some fans are dumb enough to believe that Jaime had a part in it.

  • Joshua Taylor,

I’ve heard people say that it doesn’t make much of a difference, but Stoneheart now doesn’t really have a reason to be hellbent on killing Jaime and willing to hang Brienne because she thought Jaime played a role in planning the RW. This is something that as a reader I will obsess over. Why change the most iconic line in the series?

  • Tyrion Pimpslap,

It makes me wonder if Stoneheart is going to be featured quite heavily in the subsequent seasons? Will she be hanging lots of Lannisters as a way to give the unsullied audiences some retribution? I’m slightly bummed about this but from a tv writing perspective it is for the exact reason that you mentioned. They pulled off a coup getting most of the Unsullied to somewhat embrace Jaime this season and they are afraid to connecting him directly to the RW plot. It makes sense. I am glad to be forewarned of this to be honest.

  • Michel:
Since there isn’t a post yet about the tracklist of Season 3, here it is: http://588890992.r.cdn77.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/season3_soundtrack.png
Very curious about the song of the final scene, I have no idea about it, but probably something related to theNightswatch..

That last one is interesting. It’s a phrase in the books that Varys says, just after he’s killed Pycelle and as his little birds are killing Kevan. But it’s not until the end of ADWD. Pycelle still has a few things to do in the story, minor but if they gave those things to another character like Kevan or Mace it wouldn’t have the same impact, like testifying against Tyrion in the trial, and enabling Cersei in her paranoia.

Maybe Varys kills Olenna? Would be awesome, unexpected, and have a big impact on the Tyrells and cast suspicion on the Lannisters.

  • Joshua Taylor,

Yeah, it’s kind of annoying, although I get why they did it. On one hand, “The Lannisters send their regards” does sound a lot more badass. On the other hand, would Stoneheart be the vengeance machine that she becomes if she didn’t believe that she were personally responsible for her son’s death? She’s the one who *freed* Jaime Lannister, after all — I’ve always thought that a huge part of what drives her roaring rampage of revenge is guilt, or at least a desperate attempt to avoid it.

Maybe they’re planning to sub in the “couldn’t love a motherless child” thing instead as the source of her guilt?

  • Shan,

I agree “The Lannisters send their regards” is super annoying. What’s more annoying is the rage monsters that line will create because of the change

  • Saint:

Don’t worry, it will still surprise you in how its done.

  • Ri:
I am really disappointed about rabbit skinning..

I’m sure the meat was used. Don’t feel too bad. You can’t just use wanton slaughter of animals on a film shoot. There are laws. They probably bought them from a butcher who had yet to skin them. I’m sure their lives were not only this one purpose in the scene.

    I admire your comment.

  • So when Boy is revealed as the BoB (did I just make up that acronym?) unsullied people will be like “Who?” And then their non-book-reading friend from across the room will answer, “Bolden” (the D is intentional) you know that guy who works for Robb Stark? He’s the dude who is the head of the gang that chopped off Jamie Lannister’s hand.”

    Or something to this effect.

All season they’ve been playing this up to be a major reveal, but the payoff is going to be a let-down for casual fans.

Can anyone explain to me how the Boy being revealed as one of Lord Bolton’s bastard sons is going to be a big moment for the casual fan?

    ’cause I don’t get it.

  • I could be mistaken on this, but why do I never see certain actors on the show get interviewed? I feel like I always see Alfie Allen, Lena Headley and Masie Williams get interview, but I NEVER see Stephan
Dillane or Conleth Hill get interviewed, I think I saw a few brief snippets of Dillane in the production videos, andI dont think I have ever seen Comleth Hill being interviewed about the show, with the exception of a brief article I remember reading.

    llane

  • Magnar of Thenn,

I think it really just comes down to the indiviual actor, both their availability and willingness to do press. I’ve heard Conleth never really does press, who knows about Stephen.

Jack Gleeson hardly does any either, and I think he’s one of the top three best actors on the show.

  • Turncloak,

I think it makes sense for the tv show. In the books we are inside Jaime’s head in his POV chapters so we know he had nothing to do with the RW but if they use the line “Jaime Lannister sends his regards” it might make people think the Jaime was somehow behind the RW which would undo all of the great character development he’s had this season. Although I always thought it was cool that such a famous line name-checked my favorite character I can understand why they changed it.

  • If they don’t make Rolling Stones movie with Alfie Allen as Mick Jagger something is horribly wrong.

  • OT but these GOT guys do pop up in the weirdest places – just watched a couple of episodes of Dr Who featuring Harry Lloyd and Thomas Brodie-Sangster.

  • Rahbur, thanks for that! Jack Gleeson is THE MAN! During that last bit, you can just see him channeling Joffrey! Gave me shivers!

  • dizzy:

    LOl, good call!

    Also…

Here we go again with the “Big Change” in the Lannister line. Calm down people. This will not change Stoneheart’s Rage Motivation. Viewers will still know that she is hellbent on destroying Lannisters because THEIR FAMILY whacked the Starks at the RW. It really isn’t a big deal. She can still be enraged at Brienne, because she’ll think she was derelict in her duty to deliver the Kingslayer. I mean Jamie.

  • Hollyoak,

“Yep, my bastard son has Theon. The good news is that he did get some information out of him! Yep, Theon totally confessed to killing your brothers and burning down your castle. Mystery solved, I guess. Glad I could help. Sorry we weren’t able to track down the Kingslayer. He’s just vanished off the face of the earth, what can I say? Hey, did I get to this wedding too late to get my hands on some mini-quiches?”

That’s my guess for the shock that’s going to come out of the reveal of his identity.

  • Shan:

Good interpretation, Shan. We shall see!

  • Hollyoak,

I often wonder why people make it a point to mention or be offended by the rabbit skinning, when the actors are all walking aroung in leather pants, bags, shoes, and fur capes and whatnot. When they don’t have to see where leather or meat comes from it’s no big deal, but if they have to watch it, then it is a big deal?

  • I kind of felt Charles Dace gave the “here we go again” look but as usual he handled it and he’s a fun guy. Loved his Fifty Shades of Grey bit!

Liam did a rather sadistic role on Strike Back (watched recently) and then watched him as Davos again…maaaaan that was quite a change and even felt somewhat relieved :D but showed he can play a villain pretty well. Good sport!

Disappointed again not to see Jack Gleeson or Conleth on another interview GoT teamed but I’m starting to think they’re like “bah…the others can handle the interviews let’s hang out” =p

  • I like how Iwan Rheon really digs into that ear. There is something there that needs to be removed. Unfortunately, his character in GoT is so weak.

  • Ok why this season is it such a big mystery who Ramsay Snow is. They literally said in season 2 the where sending him after Theon.

  • I cannot get enough of Jan Gilbert’s (Flicks and the City) Interviews for Game of Thrones. I love that she knows so much about the characters, and that she participates in the interview. She laughs with genuinity, and brings up excellent ad-hoc questions in addition to the one’s she’s obviously prepped. They’re a joy to watch, she seems like a really nice person. Thanks for capturing these, WiC!
