Red Wedding reactions caught on tape

One of the best parts about being a long-time reader of A Song of Ice and Fire is knowing when the big moments are coming, and anticipating the emotional aftermath for new fans. Video reactions to the Red Wedding from last night’s episode of Game of Thrones are now popping up all over youtube. What some of them may lack in quality, they more than make up for in entertainment.

Ours is the Fury: More great reactions will undoubtedly turn up throughout the day. Feel free to link them in comments!

  • I loved watching these videos! I totally had the same smirk as the bookreader in the first video…can’t wait to see what else pops up on you tube in the next few days :)

  • Ah, this is the best part about having read the books first! I made my GoT watching group promise to watch this episode all together for this very reason.

  • The whole point about a reaction video is that you’re invested in the story and characters.

The last video is pointless in this regard.

  • Oh geeze, it is way to soon for me to even listen to the episode in these reactions.

I have a GOT hangover and am still way to emotional.

  • Love watching these! Great idea for a post for these nail-biting, game-changing moments! Although I would like to present that I acted like a smug bookreader, I was as keyed up as the non-book readers at our house and actually gave a “HOLY SHIT” shout out, hand-to-mouth-moment at the Talisa attack. Such a smart lead in moment.

My husband’s non-reader reaction waited until the credit roll (which I loved it being silent), when he turned to me and said, “I now hate this show.” Which, of course, means they nailed it.

  • Am I the only one who has no interest in this? To me, it’s kind of like that depressing video of Toronto Maple Leafs fans watching their team collapse late in Game 7.

  • Listening to the show without actually seeing it in these videos, highlights the amazing soundtrack, sound effects and sound editing in a way I hadn’t appreciated earlier.

  • The first few videos are great. They get less interesting as you go down the line. The worst is the one with the young girl who HAS NEVER SEEN THE SHOW BEFORE.

I couldn’t care any less what someone who has not invested any time in these characters thinks.

  • It was a fantastic episode. As a book-reader it missed some moments such as Cat clawing her face and Grey Wind taking out a bunch of Frey’s. And as a book-reader, Talisa’s death was just horrific.

But goddamn, Michelle Fairley deserves an Emmy for her perfomance in this. Simply staggering.

Let’s see how the Unsullied react when they show Grey Wind’s head on Robb’s shoulders and if Cat is thrown into the river. It was a disgusting result of the Red Wedding.

  • These videos are a testament to the greatness of the show and to the incredible work of all involved. From the creator to the writers to the actors, director, producers, sound engineers, editors et al, they should beam with pride watching this stuff.

They’ve made something that will be remembered for decades and beyond.

  • RhymeswithWeak,

From comments on TWOP forums, a few of the Unsullied have mused that The Blackfish had something to do with it before he walked out right before all the s*** went down. But the majority seem to think he just chose a really good time to go take a leak.

They also seem to be split 50/50 on whether or not Edmure is still alive.

  • There’s a Hitler (from Downfall) Ned rant video right? I can’t imagine someone’s not going to so one for this….

  • As I wrote in the recap, I think this is the only way I can “enjoy” the episode.

I wonder if there will be similar ones to when (big spoilers) Tywyn or Joffrey are killed, as in “hell yeah”. I was bored through AFFC, but when Cersei’s plan backfired, I shouted like some kind of hooligan.

  • John:
Am I the only one who has no interest in this? To me, it’s kind of like that depressing video of Toronto Maple Leafs fans watching their team collapse late in Game 7.

As a Mets fan, it’s kind of the opposite of re-watching the Buckner clip from 1986 over and over again.

  • For the full effect, it’s fun to synch up a few of them at the beginning (I did the first 4) and then play them all at once. Good times!

  • *Cackles gleefully*

There must be something wrong with me… I’m having way too much fun.

  • These are great–thanks! I felt so horrible for laughing at what the girl said at the end of the first video. Owned indeed. Poor Starks.

    Yhamm,

Best one by a mile–thanks so much! Yep, she’s curled up in the fetal position by the end, which was pretty much my reaction as well when I first read the chapter. Loved how her dog wanted to comfort her throughout.

Also, Michelle Fairley deserves every prize known to man. She gave me goosebumps every time it was time for her part in these videos. EVERY. EFFING. TIME. So incredibly moving and awful and tragic and GAH. I’m still having a visceral reaction and it’s been, what? Over sixteen hours since it aired? Bloody marvelous.

  • Great stuff. I love the reactions, the screaming, the crying, the “what the f*cks?”

Just confirms that D&D’s decision to follow through with GRRM’s vision was the right move and they have just upended everyone’s expectations for the show. For the better. Take no prisoners.

For non-readers, welcome aboard. The ride’s just getting started.

  • I love how everybody is watching with their dogs.
Especially Robo-Dog with the glowing eyes.

  • I can hardly wait to read the twitter storm on this one.
Someone said that twitter was crashing.

  • Jenny:
I love how everybody is watching with their dogs.
Especially Robo-Dog with the glowing eyes.

My thoughts exactly! And how fitting that it took a Jenny to point it out. :]

    Doloures Edd,

Such a leggy video. I practically blushed.

  • That dark haired guy in the blue shirt in first vid… He picked his ear wax, examined it and then wiped in behind the couch. All the while the woman sitting next to him was oblivious. Nice.

  • Aha ha. Awesome! I feel so superior. What a great day! I love all the guys who secretly recorded their friends and family …

  • i was initially excited to see what people’s reactions to this were going to be, but after seeing how people have reacted so viscerally to the events, i feel like this is a bit too voyeuristic too soon, even if it is fictional, we should not derive joy out of someone’s suffering.

then again, this is just fiction. we need to get over it.

    right?

    RIGHT?

  • The reactions are sad and hilarious at times. The best is the girl on the floor covered with her blankie.

If you want to peek at a tweet compilation, check out.. http://io9.com/the-100-best-tweets-about-last-nights-game-of-thrones-511003444.

My favorite is… marked for spoiler because I don’t know if ppl want to look at tweets before they column appears on WIC… not a show spoiler… “Game of Thrones will really surprise people next year when in the ninth episodes they kill off actual viewers. #got”

  • The young woman who cried out “No, Robb!” and clamped her hand to her mouth in video six broke my heart. It’s like we know and love these characters so much….

It’s really strange to watch these. I’m a bookwalker, so I knew what was coming, but I still found myself putting my hand over my mouth and crying out in a visceral reaction.

So what is it it that makes us watch these truly wrenching reactions? It’s a thrill seeing the surprise up close and personal. A macabre thrill, albeit. Some of the reactions are truly horrific. Especially since we can only hear Michelle Fairley’s throaty, hoarse pleas for the life of her son. It makes it all the more impactful. She is truly a great actress and I hope she wins some awards for this episode.

It’s strange to see some of the younger kids in these videos really taken by surprise. You feel bad for them, as if, like your traditional fantasy, they were thinking, No, they’re not really going to kill our “heroes” are they…?

Such is the world of A Song of Ice & Fire.

I do wonder, however, how people will respond to the aftermath. Which character will anchor the story going forward? Who do we root for? Who else can be killed?

As we all know, Arya answered the question already…Anyone can be killed.

  • I wore pearls so I could clutch them and clutch them I did. Even as a book reader I was shouting “Grey Wind nooooo!”

That first video gave me another layer of appreciation for Michelle Fairley. While viewing it was her face that really sold me. Having just the audio gave me chills and got me weepy all over again.

  • I laughed so hard at this comment…

I’m baffled by all the total pussies saying they ‘give up on the show’! WTF!?Its like they were expecting this show to gently jack them off until they fell asleep or something!

What part of “Winter Is Coming” did they NOT understand!?

  • WompWomp: My thoughts exactly! And how fitting that it took a Jenny to point it out. :]

    Doloures Edd,

Such a leggy video. I practically blushed.

Sorry what does that mean? Good or bad?

  • Aww, I love the last girl! There are even compilations going up on Youtube. And there are all the Facebook statuses, and all the things on Buzzfeed:

    http://www.buzzfeed.com/louispeitzman/game-of-thrones-destroyed-us-all-with-the-red-wedding

    http://www.buzzfeed.com/daves4/steps-to-get-over-your-game-of-thrones-sadness

    http://www.buzzfeed.com/donnad/best-tumblr-reactions-to-game-of-thrones-red-wedding

With that last one, I quite like Wedding Crashers and “Hate the Game, not the Flayer.”

I get a sick satisfaction out of all of this. Welcome to our pain, newbs!!

  • On the third video, notice how his dog senses he is upset and rolls on his back trying to get attention. LOL And the father’s comment about killing the “dogs” too!

I wish I had gotten my unsullied boyfriend’s reaction on tape. Afterward he said he was going to have nightmares and it was my fault (I talked him into watching the show with me at the beginning of the season and he looks forward to watching it every week now). This is a big deal because he is a firefighter and EMT and he sees pretty gruesome stuff all the time. D&D knocked it out of the park.

  • Anonymous,

Yeah, that’s the essence of a comment I made on that video on YouTube.

Some people are treating this like some sort of grossout “2 girls 1 cup” phenomenon, and that’s not what GoT is about at all.

  • Felt Pelt,

I didn’t cry watching the episode last night. But I just cried watching this video. On my laptop in a coffee shop. Later, dignity.

  • Hearing cat’s voice is just so powerful. Don’t even need to see what’s happening to feel shivers and start crying :,,(

  • I’m a Sullied and I still gotta say, “FUCKKK!” I watched the episode twice today with a different group of Unsullied friends each time. And, each time The Rains of Castamere started to play my heart would thump so hard, like boom doom boom doom, it felt like the drums were still there! Man, big-ups to D&D, HBO, Michelle, Richard, Oona and of course the evil mastermind GRRM. These Reaction Videos just show how much so many people care about these characters. What are the BIG spoilers still left to shock the world?

Seriously, if Unsullied, DO NOT REVEAL SPOILERS:

    -PURPLE WEDDING
    -Uncat… Pretty good one.
-Finding out if a Lannister does really shit gold.
    -Jon, ADWD
    -The North Remembers… ?
    -What more?

  • My Facebook page lit up last night with people’s reaction.

    They were pissed!

  • GreatJon of Slumber: As a Mets fan, it’s kind of the opposite of re-watching the Buckner clip from 1986 over and over again.

Sorry about your present GoT post wedding angst, but I can top your reactions.
Picture the Oakland A’s lose the series bid after a 20 game winning streak. It still hurts.

  • I secretly hoped a compilation of sorts would appear here. My eyeglasses
steamed up even though I viewed the episode last night, a voyeuristic
perception of the mass murder only intensified my horror. The videos
are priceless at catching newbie viewers and seasoned veterans of the
affair. Honestly I had no preconceived expectations of mine own
reaction, I just figured GoT wouldn’t get it right, or illicit a less than
real quality to the proposed scene. I was wrong, it was worse. As
observed by the above video clips, the sound and visualization of this
grizzly affair could only provoke shock and extreme emotion. I was as
    speechless as the newbies.

With the myriad of emotional responses, I expected some screams, but the
nervous twitches of the males peaked my curiosity as did those whom
    watched with their dogs.

    My favorite response was , ” I didn’t see that coming ” ” Oh…oh….oh….that
takes care of the entire family ” ” There’s nobody left but the Lannisters ” ” Oh
    crap….. wtf…why ?……

Why indeed. Now others may relate to my first ever read by author George RR Martin.
Alas, I’m a virgin no more.

Needless to say, Michelle Fairley earned a best performance bid , no competition.
    Beats Rigg’s QoT.

  • TBH I don’t have the time to watch all of these so if someone could just tell me the best ones & I’ll watch later, I’d appreciate it :)

  • The compilation (posted above) is the best one, the others are too long.

Man, it feels simultaneously funny/sad/cruel watching these!

  • My roommate tried to film my reaction of the red wedding, I slapped him like Cat slapped Bolton. Let me watch!

  • WompWomp:
    KG,

For a split second I expected it to yowl “HOLY SHIT” at the end. [laughs]

I have to say, this is one of my favorite reaction videos so far. Hopefully the supposed series-quitters will experience this sort of cycle before re-entering the fandom:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GH6mEvhTEt0

I felt bad for her, especially when she put the blanket in her mouth, then later
said ” I’m never going to watch this show again “. Same reaction as most readers.

  • My girlfriend gasped and covered her mouth at the moment Talisa got stabbed and didn’t move her hand until the credits rolled.

Then she wouldn’t speak to me for about an hour because I didn’t warn her ahead of time. She’s starting to recover.

Honestly, it reminds me of my dad’s reaction to Ned’s head coming off. He was upset that night and joking about it the next day.

  • Also, someone needs to edit the reactions all together, I don’t have time to watch all of them :P

  • Mimsy:
The reactions are sad and hilarious at times. The best is the girl on the floor covered with her blankie.

Thanks for posting this, I’m not a twitter person, yet these reads are awesome.
One of my favorites was ” If GRRM was in Auburn right now, I’d stab him in
    the heart “

  • King DBC,

I’d add Drogon’s reurn to Meereen and Cersei’s walk of shame to that list, but yeah, it’s true that AFFC and ADWD lack a lot of shocking moments like this one. However, them being completely set-up books means that TWoW will have some ass-kicking moments. Let’s hope it gets released… someday, I guess.

  • Thanks for posting this Fury, these are awesome, even better then the Ned Stark reaction videos. You know, I wonder, will people post these during the PW too? Just to get non book readers reaction of HELL YEAH!!! lol.

  • WildSeed,

She came full circle, from supposedly not wanting to watch anymore to pressing on. It’s her decision to keep watching that makes it special. Such was the depth of her response.

  • Wow. Thanks for posting these. I think my favorite is the Dad — and my favorite part is when he is taking stock of which Starks are left — how worried he is that they can’t “generate an army”.

That’s why we do what we do! Thanks again for posting.

    B

  • Okay, first, ^^ Bryan Cogman! **fangirling**

And second, my favorite was also fleece blanked on the floor girl. And her dog was totally worried about her, so cute.

I wanted to to get a reaction video of my lord husband but it was just too dark. He was silent until the end, and he said, “Fuck the Freys, fuck the Boltons, and FUCK TYWIN LANNISTER.” and then he wiped a tear away. Love that guy :)

  • Bryan Cogman,

You guys made it all happen. You, David, Dan, George, and the entire cast and crew of this amazing show.

From a Sullied viewer who reacted in much the same way when I first read the infamous chapter, thank you for all of your hard work!

  • Bryan Cogman:

That’s why we do what we do!Thanks again for posting.

    B

And you do great! Thanks for a memorably sad evening. From Grey Wind’s eyes closing for the last time to Catelyn’s scream…it was heart-breaking. I loved every minute of it.

  • And people hate Joffrey because he‘s a sadist…

Folks love to think they’re as honorable as Ned Stark, but they’re way more like any other despicable character of the show.

  • You can notice a difference on these reactions and Ned’s death reactions. Back then, people were shocked, but a beheading is something we actually see happening in some shows on ocasion. Now that reactions from yesterday’s episode… people were utterly horrified. It’s a horrible, horrible scene, and Talysa’s death was totally unnecessary

  • Lex: LOL! That’s gotta be fake…

I laughed initially and then felt guilty about it. I don’t think she’s joking…

  • One of these days I’m going to post my video reaction of every time tweedle dee and tweedle dum screws up in the show. It’s going to be three hours long of my head shaking and with my hand over my face.

  • The Purist:
One of these days I’m going to post my video reaction of every time tweedle dee and tweedle dum screws up in the show. It’s going to be three hours long of my head shaking and with my hand over my face.

WAAAAH!!! PEOPLE DID SOMETHING I DIDN’T THINK OF DOING SO NOW I’M GOING TO ACT LIKE IT IS DUMB!!!! WAAAHHH!!!!

  • Family, Duty, Hodor:
The most extreme reaction I’ve seen yet:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d1Z0Tv40RSs

Warning: it’s painful just watching her be upset.

Definitely a banner woman of Winterfell and Stark family supporter. I’d hate to
see her reaction to Ned’s beheading. She’s obviously hell bent on revenge and
most likely hooking up with Arya when she finds her location. I couldn’t
watch the entire clip, she was starting to mimic Catelyn Stark’s outraged
onscreen scene. Honestly I’d forgotten how likely peoples reaction to
these events, not just sadness but anger and outrage…..at everything….Frey,
    Lannister…..GRRM . *>*

  • Felt Pelt,

My favorite, by far. Someone else mentioned it: I was stonefaced while watching the show (albeit heart pounding through my chest), but frickin lost it watching this reaction.

  • As a book-reader I admittedly took some sadistic pleasure in watching reaction videos of Unsullied seeing the RW on GoT. But that’s nothing compared to the sick fucks (book readers every one of them) filming their unitiated friends going into shock over the massacre. That’s just cruel.

  • Hahahaha I loved Maisie Williams’ “reaction video.” That girl is too much. I’d totally want to hang out with her. I’ve not seen or read one non-reader reaction yet that isn’t completely surprised/incredulous/hurt. Success!

  • I want to laugh, but the reactions and the sound of the scene in the background are almost worse than watching the actual scene in the show.

Pretty sure this one hasn’t been posted here yet.

My favourite so far–great quality, has all the disbelief and nervous anxiety, but the guy’s reaction at the end is really what makes it! I hope and suspect his sentiment is the one that many will eventually default to, after the initial shock and despair has faded.

  • Someone totally needs to mash-up one of these reaction videos with the screaming goat video. I wanna see goats react to GoT! Someone make this happen! :)

  • Hahaha! I wonder how people are going to react to what happens at the end of A Dance With Dragons. :D Although, I’m pretty sure Jon will be resurrected by Melisandre.
