Production Speculation

The S4 premiere script revealed (sort of)

Want to see the script for the season 4 premiere episode? Here it is, courtesy of Carice van Houten’s Instagram!

Ep. 401 Script

Winter Is Coming: Ok, so that was a tease. But we did learn at least one thing: that David & Dan will be writing the season 4 premiere. And while we’re here I should note that filming starts in exactly one week, which means cast sightings in Belfast should be coming any day now. Last year, those were responsible for us learning of quite a few castings. So, people of Belfast, keep your eyes peeled for actors hanging out with known Thrones cast members!

  • Or as someone on here said, we could grow beards, long hair and be cast ourselves!

  • Michel:
So that also means Stannis crew in 4×01.

Hurrah! Hopefully we will see more of Shireen in S4. Kerry Ingram is adorable.

  • I wonder if we will know some Stannis bannerman like Florent or Massey these season or for the entire series only Davos and Melisandre are going to support him.

  • Seven Hells Bells,

I thought Season 3 was particularly strong for Melisandre, but agreed that S4 could be the time to shine for the rest of them. Glad to see they’ll be in the first episode back!

  • I hope she doesn’t get in trouble for tweeting this.

She posted youtube links to the episode she did commentary on with Liam before. I’m sure HBO didn’t like that.

  • Winter, you devious bastard! I really thought you had some crazy leak!

Well, at least we know that Melisandre is in the first episode. Most likely it will just be them getting ready to sail off, but if we’re lucky we could get a few Florent’s introduced, or a few Stan Bannermen.

Carice seems a bit tweeter-happy sometimes. She’s quite fun though!

  • Does this mean that they’ve finished all the scripts? If so does that mean they’ve hired all the actors? Not familiar with production sorry

  • Bryan Cogman explained in an interview he did with Chronicle Books last year that individual episodes are only actually given a name late in the production process.

Thus they aren’t hiding the name of the Season 4 premiere from us or the cast members who received the script: they simply haven’t come up with an official name yet.

  • Are there even any big casting announcements besides Oberyn? The only one’s I can think of are maybe Val and Mace Tyrell

  • I can not wait until information on casting starts leaking. Not as much who the actors will be but which characters are cast.

What has been confirmed so far?
    -Oberyn Martell
    -Mace Tyrell
    -Styr Magnar
-Ellaria Sand (or is that unconfirmed)?

    I think we’ll see
    – Val
    -Coldhands

    Possible
    -Arianne and Doran Martell
    -Victarion, Euron and Aeron Greyjoy
    -One or more Kettleblacks
    -Taena Merryweather
    -Kindly Man
    -Mya Stone
    -Ben Plumm

    Unlikely
-Sand Snakes (too early, they don’t impact the story yet)
-Dalla (will probably be condensed with Val)
-Bloodraven (the Bran arc needs to be slowed down it’s getting too far ahead)
-Wyman Manderley and Robett Glover (I think Davos will stay with Stannis until after the battle at the Wall and they will invent a Theon/Ramsay story so these arcs will not get too far ahead. They might not need Glover at all)

    Did I leave anything out?

  • Anybody have theories about episode names?

Tyrion kills Tywin should be “A Lannister Always Pays his Debts”

  • Im still thinking that theres a good chance we could get Euron Greyjoy this season. Its near 100% that Balon Greyjoy has to die before Joffery due to the leach scene in season 3. And once that happens it would make sense for them to introduce Euron so he can take the throne once Balon is dead. Even if they don’t bother with the Kingsmoot now Yara is on her own mission it would surely still make sense to have Euron claim the throne on the Iron Islands.

I agree. The “battle” for the Seastone Chair has to be introduced soon after Balon dies. Otherwise, the Iron Islands storyline may lose its impact. Between the limitations of time and the need to manage character growth, it could prove challenging to make the Greyjoys and Martells appear relevant to the larger narrative.

  • So now we’re quoting non-book readers and giving them spoilers? What do we accomplish with that? All book readers know that already so you’re not revealing anything. Just spoiling it for that guy who will probably read it because you referred to him directly. Makes no sense…

  • I commented on one of Philip Mcginley’s (Anguy) Instagram pictures today and asked if he’d be returning for Season 4 and he deleted my comment. He’s replied to me every time I’ve commented before, so I’m guessing he either doesn’t know yet, or he is and didn’t want to confirm it. I think if he wasn’t, he would have answered. Who knows.

  • Does anyone else see the watermark on the script page ? I see what looks like the outline of a woman when i move my laptop screen.

  • mariamb,

Good point. Most of the ASOS characters were introduced in season 3 (along with AGOT and ACOK characters they put off). They have some room to introduce more Greyjoys early. Also, the Iron Islands chapters in early AFFC take place at the same time as the late ASOS chapters.

  • I think I like her as a person. She seems pretty ok with the idea of a large, goofy fanbase :)

  • WeirwoodTreeHugger: Anybody have theories about episode names?

Tyrion kills Tywin should be “A Lannister Always Pays his Debts”

That episode should be titled “Where ever whores go”

  • Re: Val

For a younger Val: Yvonne Strahkowski or Imogen Poots. For a more weathered, slightly older (but attractive nonetheless) : Anna Torv. Torv’s a GoT fan as well. She could also play Lady Hornwood or Barbrey Dustin.

  • WeirwoodTreeHugger,

The interview that D&D did with dateline they said that they had alot of disagreements with GRRM over characters that need to be left out. So with that in mind the only one i agree with is Arianne. I dont think we will see the others this season. I think they can delay kingsmoot till next season i think they will focus on Yarra raiding. Maybe one of her uncles will be around. I think its too early for the kindly man even if arya makes it to bravos i dont think we will see her in the temple this seasonDoran isnt needed till later. Ican see them never putting in the kettleblacks merryweathers or Mya stone. I would love to see Ben Plumm but I dont thing they need to add any more to Danys retinue. I hope they at least mention Manderlys if not show them.

  • Ahmed Hassan:

Why would she be in season 4? Or are you referring to the dream sequence where DUDE SPOILERS WTF?! DON’T BE AN A**HOLE!? But that was in book 4, so not any time soon.

  • Joshua Taylor,

    Agreed on all counts….

    Don’t forget Sophia Myles!
She’s another one of the younger blonde actresses I can see as Val/ Dalla/ Valla.

If they do go older Thekla Reuten or MyAnna Buring would be fun as well!

  • Turncloak: That episode should be titled “Where ever whores go”

Mine would be “Only a Cat of a Different Cloak” to tie in with Cat’s new hobby and “Only Cat.” alongside Tyrion’s dark turn.

  • And while we’re at it: John Noble for Mace Tyrell. He could easily pull of ” The Lord Oaf of Highgarden” and have the edge for a personality as well.

  • Zlatko:

It pisses me off. That’s one guy spoiled, possibly more. And just because of Internet trolls. I thought this site was clean…

  • Dragonstoners! That made me laugh.

I’m sure if she were in trouble the picture would’ve been taken down by now. It doesn’t even show the name of the episode, which would be much more “spoilery” IMO.

The second half of Book 3 was one of my favorite part of the series to read. I am so beyond stoked that film is starting soon! Squee!

Exactly. “Oh no, GOT has a first episode next season!!!” Chill guys, this is nothing…

  • Whoever suggested John Noble and Anna Torv to join the cast gets a thousand points in my book.

    I loved Fringe.

  • Hey, how about Stellan Skarsgård as Mace Tyrell? I think he looks pretty close to what I imagined him looking like.

  • King Tyrion:
    Moderators
can you remove Ahmed Hassan’s comment? It’s a little spoilery

That’s only spoiler-y if people jump to conclusions. In season 3, there was a scene with Bran dreaming and his mom going cray and pushing him out of the tree. It’s a question that doesn’t mean much of anything out of context, if a person is being reasonable.

  • This is exciting. Can’t wait to see some sightings.
Season 4 has the potential to be amazing.
    Team Dragonstone on tour!!!

  • So this confirms that the Dragonstone crew will be in the premiere. My hope is that there early stuff involves Stannis’ family preparing to leave, and Stannis trying to get ships, because, assuming my prediction for the Night’s Watch season is correct, Stannis shouldn’t be arriving at his destination until episode 8. As for the Ironborn, I still believe that we won’t see the Kingsmoot until season 5, but I have revised my theory for how the season will play out:
episode 2: A scene with YarAsha travelling on her way to the Dreadfort.
episode 3: Balon dies, the Silence is in the background. I think Joffrey will die in episode 4, so this is consistent with the leeches.
episode 4: Euron crowns himself (and drowns that guy), and word of it spreads. A brief scene where YarAsha nears the Dreadfort. Because YarAsha has been travelling, she is yet to hear of Balon’s death.
episode 5: YarAsha vs Ramsay. YarAsha loses but is able to retreat. During the battle Ramsay taunts YarAsha with the knowledge that her father is dead, and that Euron is now king.
episode 6: YarAsha and co leave to head back to Pyke. YarAsha gives some backstory on Euron
episode 8 or 9: YarAsha returns and confronts Euron
episode 10: YarAsha or Aeron (if he is cast), calls for a Kingsmoot. YarAsha sets out to garner support*

*Remember, The Kingsmoot wasn’t immediately after Balon’s death in the books, there was a period of time where Euron had crowned himself and was killing those who opposed him

    We do not Hodor,
He was originally cast as the High Septon in season 2 :P.

  • Joshua Taylor:
And while we’re at it: John Noble for Mace Tyrell. He could easily pull of ” The Lord Oaf of Highgarden” and have the edge for a personality as well.

I think he’s much too old for that part. He’d make a good High Sparrow, though, or the Kindly Man. I tend to think that part gets cut in favor of Jaqen H’gar.

  • Valdred Dethstorm: I’m still thinking which kind of trollish parent would name her child ‘Imogen Poots’, seriously.

It’s a legitimate name , long before it was bastardized or debased as slang.
There is this also, a rapper whom went by the name ” Pooty Tang ” .

I wonder how people pronounce her first name, though. I only know of one way,
    but these days…… anything goes. ( Em-a-gene , I-mo-gene ) (((?)))

  • Athelstan:
    Joshua Taylor,

How about James Fleet for Mace Tyrell? He has a track record for playing buffons.Robert Bathurst is another possible candidate.

Robert Bathurst might make sense, he’s sufficiently buffoonish. James Fleet is 61, and therefore not much younger than Diana Rigg. I see the character as being 47-48 area. Kevin Doyle, also of Downton Abbey (plays Moseley, another total schlemiel), is 52, and probably would work out well, though then again he’s very thin.

  • My vote for Mace Tyrell remains Alan Dale.

He wouldn’t be as buffoonish as BookMace, but I’d love to see some Dale vs Charles Dance showdown scenes.

  • And just for the record I would piss my smallclothes if John Noble shows up ANYWHERE in GoT. In one of my favorite fanvids they “cast” him as the Mad King, using footage from LoTR.

  • Greatjon of Slumber,

High Sparrow would be perfect for him! Noble was born in ’48. He is too old for Mace alas. As is my other choice Tom Wilkinson. I want Anna Torv in GoT. I can see her as a showVal for certain. A Val/Dalla composite perhaps. They can even make her fight in battle if they want.

  • Quest,

Yep. I will cash that cheque in advance. And episode 10 will be called Only Cat. It’s the perfect choice. I can’t see why they wouldn’t.

  • Turncloak: That episode should be titled “Where ever whores go”

This. Let the programmes censor it if they like (do these exist for PayTV? Don’t know my way around US TV)

  • To add: Doctor Who’s ” Moldovar ” may look the part for Manderly, without the
blue makeup of course, however Ian McNeice gets my vote.

  • Joshua Taylor: Only Cat. It’s the perfect choice. I can’t see why they wouldn’t.

It gives away the punchline. Now, having Lady Stoneheart coming right after Lysa flying would be amazing.

  • The minute I saw the title for this story I was all like ‘Holy Shit!’ but this was such a tease. I’m an unsullied anyway and my friends who have read the books have told me that the second half of ‘A Storm of Swords’ is nothing short of explosive.

P.S : I’ve been lurking around this site for a long while now but this is my first time as a commenter. Absolutely love the site, amazing work guys, keep it up!

  • Haven’t seen any of the famous pink GoT signs up anywhere, but i’m on the look out :)

  • I saw somewhere that these main characters would be cast, along with a few unknown names:

    Oberyn Martell
    Mace Tyrell
    Arianne Martell
    Arys Oakheart
    Wyman Manderly
    Euron Greyjoy
    Victarion Greyjoy
    Styr

  • The new filming location in Split, Croatia, is probably for Dorne, and casting of Arianne and Arys, would probably mean some scenes with their love affair, and some scenes with Myrcella.

  • Someone on Facebook who goes by PetyrBaelishLittlefinger claims that Dalla has been cast, but provides no source or actress name.

“Some interesting news: Dalla, the wife of Mance Rayder, has been cast.”

Without sources or even a name to investigate I am skeptical, but intrigued….

  • Red Hound,

Yeah for sure! If I had my way, ep 10 would be Aftermath of RV’s death, followed by Jon’s election, followed by Jorah’s banishment followed by LF kissing Sansa, followed by Tyrion’s escape, followed by Arya sailing to Bravos, followed by Shae/Tywin death followed by Lysa’s death and then Lady Stoneheart.

  • Lou Reed:
The new filming location in Split, Croatia, is probably for Dorne

Split is nothing like Dorne, and I don’t think we’ll see Dorne next year, so Split will be something else (Id like Bravoos, but probably King’s Landing or even Mereen) They’ll probably use Morocco for Dorne, but well, you never know :)

  • Joshua Taylor,

On casting speculations… Does Mace Tyrell actually have any significant lines in the books? I’ve read them all once (and certain chapters more than once) but nothing major stands out in my memory. I know he does some things to boast Tyrell political opportunities and has a role related to the War of the Formerly-5-but-Dwindling-Number-of Kings and dealing with Margaery’s arrest and upcoming trial, but I wonder if it’s even necessary to cast a named actor when the character is more spoken-about than speaking.

I wonder the same thing about: Oberyn’s multitude of bastard daughters, most of Arianne Martell’s compatriots in the plot to crown Myrcella, and even Ellaria Sand.
