Day 17: Season four filming in Iceland begins
By Ours is the Fury on in Filming.

Nesjavellir
Location shooting in Iceland for Game of Thrones‘ fourth season began yesterday in Nesjavellir, according to Icelandic news sources.

The Morning Paper is reporting that the show’s cast and crew were spotted filming in the region of the Dyrfjöll mountains above Nesjavellir. Nesjavellir is a geothermal power station near the previously reported locations of Þingvellir and Hengilsvæðið.

Another report from the same news site mentions that production is expected to be finished in Iceland by August 1st. Presently two of the show’s stars, Maisie Williams and Gwendoline Christie, are confirmed to be in Reykjavik.

Ours is the Fury: That’s several locations with only a week and a half of filming time in Iceland. Benioff really wasn’t kidding about the filming schedule being brutal this year.

    Jon Blackfyre,

Sounds like it will be all summer shooting in Iceland this year, so attack on the wall will likely be filmed in a studio – I think all studio filming happens in Belfast, am I correct on that?

    Jon Blackfyre,

Its summer in Iceland so I highly doubt this has anything to do with the story at the wall or north of the wall.

They seem to be taking advantage of the long summer days to film scenes much farther south of the wall.

…Why is the filming schedule so tight? So that they (the directors) can then fly to Croatia and Morocco? 1.5 weeks seems a bit tight… Wasn’t it like 6 weeks last year? (someone please correct me as I don’t recall exactly anymore.)

How on bloody earth/Westeros are they going to film the Battle at the Wall in 1.5 weeks (along with everything else happening in the far north)??

    Animals ? Herds ? Horses ?

Anyway, this definitly loooks like Iceland is gonna be used for some parts of the Riverlands and coastlines…

No Sophie Turner spot ? Those locations could work for the Vale as well !

Maybe that little boy really is Edric Dayne. Or a child at the inn of the crossroads. No idea what the animals are. Hopefully Nymeria and her pack are appearing.
It would be cool if Brieene and Arya meet. I’m guessing they will cut the quiet isle, where Brienne finds out Arya is alive.

Oh, that’s going to be so great, when Arya and the Hound come upon this old man, and he asks them what their names are, and what their quest is, and what the average velocity of an unladen swallow is, and then they come upon this big geothermal station, and get arrested, and it’ll all be so “meta.”

So far the only leaks have been for what we assume to be minor roles played by unknown actors and then the one unknown role to be played by Mark Gattiss.

At least we got one official announcement for the Red Viper!!
Honestly, I was a bit thrown by Pedro Pascal being cast at first (he had the look I assumed for Oberyn but was unknown to me), but the more I see of Pascal the more I like him for the role!

Very likely. The KL wall and gate they built was in the same quarry as the Castle Black set, IIRC, and the top of the Wall can be done in a studio. So between the Castle Black location set and indoor locations they probably have it covered. I don’t think they need to build a huge new set as they did for ‘Blackwater’.

Since this is the summer and the landscape looks like how I imagined the mouth of the Trident, I predict that Jamie will send Brienne on a quest for Arya before the PW, and then it’ll be amended to include Sansa after the PW. I could even see Brienne actually finding Arya and the Hound, only to have Arya escape at the end of the season to sail to Braavos.

  50. NomadicDirewolf

seems to me that brienne will be sent out by jaime a lot earlier than in the books, and for those who are talking about the battle of the wall being filmed soon, it takes place pretty much all around castle black, and that set is in northern ireland. None of the NW storyline is likely to be filmed in Iceland this year

The issue with that is that Jaime and Brienne don’t have any leads on Arya. In the books, they at least have Dontos, even if Brienne chases it in the wrong direction.

Not that I support this theory, but Gendry should be near KL and he has a good idea where Arya is.

  53. Jacarb
    Posted July 24, 2013 at 4:41 pm | Permalink

Someone, a little while back, floated the idea of Gendry joining Brienne’s journey. Since then I have assumed this is what will happen. Their stories would fit nicely together. Brienne is looking for Stark girls and Gendry has solid info. Gendry is trying to find honor/his place in a shitty world and Brienne has loads of experience with this. And Brienne would very readily take Renly’s nephew as a squire.

That said, I wouldn’t expect Brienne to set off until the fourth or fifth episode of this season, at the earliest. Her first or second episode check-in scene will likely involve being in captivity and a conversation with Loras. Then expect to not see her for an episode or two. There will be too many major stories vying for screen time and no reason to plot-rush her out the door when the original, perfectly good trigger-event–Sansa’s escape–is going to come relatively early in the season. So we won’t see her leave until after the wedding, leaving/receiving Oathkeeper will be a scene unto itself, and as a minor plot in the back-end of the season, she won’t get to do much.

My guess is that her one or two scenes in the Riverlands will involve finding Gendry and just-missing Arya, but we won’t get into the proper questing. As a bonus long-shot theory, she could end the season with Stoneheart and skip the questing altogether. Heading into a monstrous season 5, it would make sense to consolidate plots sooner than in the books. And if they really do hold the Stoneheart reveal until the end, having Brienne involved would be fantastic.

Great advice. Anyone remember the shitstorm that occurred when Mark Addy was announced as King Robert Baratheon?

Fans kept bringing up the sitcom Still Standing as a basis for judgement. While I would agree Addy was not physically how I envisioned King Robert, he knocked the role out of the park.

I guess I was of the minority seeing promise from Mark Addy’s previous works.
He’s been everything from sad middle aged stripper ( Full Monty ) to fat friar
( Robin Hood ) or authoritative detective roles ( not Thin Blue Line ). My
favourite was ” A Knight’s Tale “, but he played a much lesser accomplished
character. The overall role proved good character reference though, and
enjoyable to watch. I felt similarly of Dinklage, but I had to stretch my imagination.
I don’t see Pascal with any advantage for Oberyn’s alpha type commend or feature.
The role may not emphasize this however, and I appreciate the execs understand
well the full scope of the episode, where Oberyn only contributes to.

I doubt it. He is going to be the big newcomer in season 4 and will be right in the heart of the meatiest storyline, interacting with Dinklage,Dance,Rigg,Headey,Coster-Waldau and the rest of the King’s Landing crew. The fact that it is the only role that has had it’s own casting announcement with quotes from D&D tells me he will definately feature prominently in season 4.

If Brienne leaves on her journey before Tyrion’s escape (which will probably be ep 9 or 10), it seems less likely that Podrick Payne will be joining her. Although I suppose if she leaves after the Purple Wedding, it’s conceivable that Pod may also leave a little early to try to find Sansa to prove Tyrion’s innocence.

If I were writing, I would have waited a while longer to show her travels. There doesn’t seem to be any reason to rush it. I’m sure they could find things for her to do in KL with Loras and Jaime. If Jaime can basically take a season off, I don’t see why Brienne can’t.

Coverage shots don’t need the actual actor there.

    Tyrion Pimpslap:
    WildSeed,

Right, I see what you’re referring to, and I did not elaborate as I had in previous posts
specific to his onscreen presence. Oberyn Martell WILL feature prominently, in his
S4 introduction. His interaction with the court at King’s Landing is to be expected,
and references the book’s purpose. Beyond that, the manner that actor Pascal
personifies Oberyn and the full impact of his storyline, is up to the creative heads’
decision making. My speculation is that he comes on strong, similar to Dan
Hildebrand’s Krasnys ( only I’m keeping my fingers crossed that he can merit
that much praise), then he’s gone. My only hope is that he’s not buffoonish,
as opposed to an accomplished swordsman with cool confidence. Any idiot may
wag a blade about. George Hamilton did that in ” Zorro, the Gay Blade “, and not
    bad swordplay at that !

I suppose S2 Dontos’s introduction shouldn’t serve to predict a pattern, but limited
roles have been hit or miss. I enjoyed book Oberyn very much, for his keen
observation as well as alpha swagger. If there is a tiny bit of repartee or clever
exchange between he and Tyrion, I may almost overlook anything else. The Red Viper
of course, forwards the story to House Martell, and all references to Dorne.
However the role is enacted, the purpose remains that. I would be pleasantly
surprised if any historical reference would be made to House Targaryeon.

    H. Stark,
    Nice find!

Now that I see him next to other cast members I do have one complaint with Pedro’s appearance: he is taller than I pictured Oberyn to be. Aside from that he looks perfect, and I am very much looking forward to what he does with the role :P.

    Pau,

It’s not perfect light indeed, but it is long days, the dream for any filming team… they’ll still have to bring as many reflectors as they can to soften and master the light, but I have faith ! The light direction has greatly improved between season 1 and season 3 !

I hope Pedro’s facial hair are different as Oberyn ! And he has hair extension !

Selmy: If Brienne leaves on her journey before Tyrion’s escape (which will probably be ep 9 or 10), it seems less likely that Podrick Payne will be joining her. Although I suppose if she leaves after the Purple Wedding, it’s conceivable that Pod may also leave a little early to try to find Sansa to prove Tyrion’s innocence.

I can actually see Pod leaving early. I can see a conversation between Jaime and Tyrion, with Tyrion in jail, where he explains how he’s sending Brienne to find Sansa, and Tyrion offering Pod as a companion. “She can take Pod with him. People in the black cells don’t usually need squires.” Why bother with him following her – just make him part of the journey, too. Hell, she could take Gendry as well, which would put them in the position of trying to find Arya as well.

Selmy: If I were writing, I would have waited a while longer to show her travels. There doesn’t seem to be any reason to rush it. I’m sure they could find things for her to do in KL with Loras and Jaime. If Jaime can basically take a season off, I don’t see why Brienne can’t.

I think she may well take a season off if they’re accelerating this. It’s just that it may be season 5 – which would probably be necessary if they want to work in the Martells and Greyjoys, even in a bit of a truncated form. If there’s one plot you can move into Season 4, it’s this one for sure.

    Olafur Gardarsson: Víti in Askja

Nice! all I knew is that the american astronauts went there in the sixties to train for when they landed in the moon because the landscape was so alike…

Also, 4 years ago there was only one company making Askja tours, and only 3 days a week (thats why I couldnt go then) whereas now they have daily trips by more than one company. And getting a room on the road has been fucking complicated this time around, even if the hotels/hostels are more than before, so I can say for a fact that tourism in Iceland is growing, and growing a lot.

I don’t know what percentage of this growth is due to GoT but it surely has helped ;)

He already announced that he will postpone the fourth Dunk and Egg story some weeks ago, so it’s not really something new. I doubt it has something to do with HBO pressure, though.

At the moment, there’s only TWoW and the new “Wild Cards” edition on his schedule, he is done or nearly done wtih all his other sideprojects. Or so it seems.

    H. Stark,

I’ve seen Martin comment to that effect a lot of times. I think he’s sore about the one Dothraki guy that Drogo awesomely killed back in the first season, who apparently has an important part in the next book.

I’d also note that in the case of Xaro and Pree, the circumstances of their “deaths” suggest they could be brought back.

So, I’m kind of skeptical about the suggestion that there’s going to be tons of cases of death by adaptation. I remember people saying that the Blackfish would be killed off, since he was shown in pics taking place at the Red Wedding, but of course he wasn’t.
