Jack Gleeson talks playing an evil little bastard

King Joffrey is a character everyone loves to hate. A lot of that is due to the way he is played so deliciously evil by Jack Gleeson. And what does Jack have to say about playing one of the greatest TV villains of all time? He was on TV3’s The Morning Show this past Friday and talked about that very thing.

Winter Is Coming: Jack is so down-to-earth and, well, normal; I feel bad he gets the reaction from fans that he does. But I guess it’s sort of a compliment? His performance is just that convincing.

  • It turns out there is indeed a cure for being a cunt: a nice swig of purple wine

Can’t wait for that wedding feast. Gleeson, Dinklage, Dance, Headey, Nikolaj, Turner, Dormer, Rigg, all under one roof

  • Who else thinks Jack Gleeson would be perfect to be the next Skywalker scion in the upcoming sequel trilogy?????

  • I thought the story on Jack was that he was giving up acting and becoming a scholar when his Game of Thrones gig was over, and yet here he is heavily involved in a theatre company.

  • While Joffrey isn’t one of the most likeable characters for me, he is certainly one of the most interesting. I actually felt like the book series lost a little something after the PW with his absence although the evil factor is more than made up for with Ramsay. Kudos to Gleeson for pulling off Joffrey’s portrayal so well.

  • WheelofIceandFire,
Yeah, I was wondering about that too. Great pannels, and as I said in one of the comments, Rory was fucking hillarious! I watched them one after the other and that was my morning well spent!

  • Thanks to the great acting on this show, I frequently miss characters that are otherwise unappealing (like Robert and Viserys). I’m really going to miss Jack Gleeson, Charles Dance and Rose Leslie.

  • I love watching Jack Gleeson as Joffrey. His simmering rage during his “I’m not tired” rant was perfect.

I will miss him terribly after he’s gone.

  • I am stoked to see Joffrey’s final scenes in the Purple Wedding. With all those actors and actresses that consistently give awesome performances (especially Gleeson and Dance) it’s going to be almost as talked-about as the RW in season 3. However, I have to say that what’s going to be most exciting is “Only Cat,” with Lysa and Littlefinger. The scene made me actually jump out of my seat with joy when I read the book, and Aidan Gillen is sure to pull it off perfectly. Gonna be hands-down the best season until the later books, which GRRM hasn’t finished yet. I get chills every time I watch the “In Memoriam” video and think about Stoneheart and the Brotherhood shitting all over the fucking Freys! The North Motherfucking Remembers.

He’s still young; he’s bound to change his mind about what he wants to do with the rest of his life a few times before he settles into something for the long haul.

It will be odd that JL (Nikolaj) will be at the PW as well…a very significant difference from the books. I wonder how the brother vs brother (TyrL vs JL) dinner activities will play out onscreen…totally original territory. Probably even more mayhem than originally written. I will miss Gleeson’s King J though.

  • He is such a talented fellow; it would be a shame to set that sort of talent aside – but, whatever will make him happy!

  • Cary Storm: Here, let me get this absurd speculation out of the way before it starts:

    Christina Hendricks can play….

… Fake Ros. After all, no one outside of King’s Landing knows that Ros is dead.

  • Fluff’s Travels,

There was a rumor going around that he was being considered for the role of Quicksilver in Avengers 2 but that was a long time ago and i haven’t heard anything about it lately.

  • Jack is amazing ! I know, I know, everybody says it, but one more time wont hurt !

I hope he ever gets to read us ! Jack, you are a tremendous actor !

Also… loved the Tampa Comic Con panel. Rory and Jason were hilarious ! They rock ! And Maisie too of course !

  • Jack Gleeson as Quicksilver? That idea has a lot to say for itself. At the same time, I’d love to see him in an heroic role for once, cast against the Joff type.

Val should be younger than Christina Hendricks is now, and, besides, if you’re going to cast Christina Hendricks, you want a role with more depth. I don’t think that there would be any problem if Barbrey Dustin had red hair. If they expanded the role, she could play the Green Grace.

  • Leuf: … Fake Ros. After all, no one outside of King’s Landing knows that Ros is dead.

Well, if she is serious about joining GoT, I hope she plays a harpy. :-))

I could see her as Val as well.

Why haven’t you made a post about the Tampa Bay Comic Con? These are two of my favourite panels ever. Maisie and Rory are great together :)

    WheelofIceandFire,

Thanks for posting these. The Sunday panel was awesome! Can’t believe how sweet, humble and funny the three of them are! The more they talked, the more we liked them. Wish we could have partied with them at the Four Green Fields Pub in Tampa.

Dude! He would be brilliant. If he doesn’t actually retire from acting, like he’s discussed.

  • VILLAIN,

Christina Hendricks can play the kick ass topless double axe wilding chick in Asha/Yara’s group..wasn’t she a red head too?

  • I know jamie should be in it! He would make a great jedi/sith!

    Uther Greenshirt,

I wouldn’t object to seeing Nikolaj, Gwen Christie, Richard Madden, Kit Harington, Maisie Williams or Iain Glen wielding lightsabers in an SW flick. They all look perfect for it.

  • Funny how the hosts keep referring to Sean Bean still being on the show, something tells me they have no clue whatsoever

  • If they go with SOME of the EU direction with the new SW I say Iain Glen for Grand Admiral Thrawn.
    Rose Leslie for Mara Jade?

  • MRR,

I think he wants to be on the sidelines or back ground of doing stage plays. It seems to me that he wants to do it as hobby than an actual career. In the TBCC, Maisie mentioned that Jack doesnt want to act anymore after or something in that effect. So he might work on producing theatre as hobby and make a career as a scholar

  • This interview gives a great sense for his personality, and after hearing so many people say “He’s just the nicest guy!” I appreciate getting to see a bit of that in interviews like that. He’s brilliant for Joff, and I’m simultaneously deeply horrified and amused that random people on the street would shout obscenities at ‘King Joffrey’. But I guess it comes with the territory, and he takes it in stride, so that’s good :)

    We’re lucky to have him!

Off-topic but I thought I’d leave this here..

Other actors who have said they want to be in GOT include Ron Perlman, Christine Baranski, Kristin Stewart, and Charize Theron! I’d love to see a whole topic dedicated to this issue! Christine Baranski would be a great feisty Genna Frey, I think. Ron could be any number of characters, Charize could be Taena of Myr, Kristen could be Mya Stone, christina Hendricks could be the topless lady, or maybe Ygritte’s sister, or Melisandre’s sis. Wish GOT would get some of these people, seriously.

  • It’s not really her fault but Christina Hendricks is a buxom woman and as a result that’s what most people see when casting her or in general. It’s too bad really because she is not a Pamela Anderson type but a very gifted actress. Her Joan Harris on Mad Men alone is proof of that. I hope she continues to test her self with different roles. So far she hasn’t succumbed to allowing her sex symbol status to propel her career which is why you don’t see her as a leading lady in a Hollywood film. It’s the independent films that you often see her in.
If she does nail a role on GoT I hope it is a well written one and not background scenery.

  • Ron Perlman would be good as Capt. Rodrick Harlaw, or Victarion Greyjoy, or Jon Connington. That’s just my opinion. :-)

  • i love this guy jack i mean i can hate joffrey easily bc jack plays the role perfectly :)
also i like the fact that he is one actors that we havent seen naked yet it just feel somehow uncomfortable when they get naked-_-
