Filming

Day 41: Shooting in Croatia starts tomorrow

As the title of the post says, the production has now moved to Croatia and they start filming in the Dubrovnik area tomorrow. The locations used are the Trsteno Arboretum we know from S2, the Belvedere hotel terrace, and a new addition, the Gradac park just outside the old city centre, according to our sources. Dubrovnik.net has this report up.

The Belvedere set getting its final touches with this detailed floor painting

Among the talent arriving to Dubrovnik are Sophie Turner (Sansa), Gwendoline Christie (Brienne), and Tony Way (Dontos Hollard). Pedro Pascal (Oberyn Martel) should be there soon as well. Below is a photo of him with his practice spear, still in Belfast by the looks of it, and here is Pedro having fun with Indria Varma (Ellaria Sand).

  • Can we expect anymore casting news until the end of the filming? Only 5 (Mace, Styr, Oberyn, Elaria + Mark Gattis) for me its to few :(

  • Michel,

Yeah I agree. I really liked that video from last year that introduced us to the new cast members. I was hoping for something like that again this year.

Brienne and Sansa in King’s Landing at the same time. Any ideas on how they’re going to write within or around this?

  • Why this circle has the Baratheons and the Lannister simbol? Shouldn’t it have the Lannister (Gregor, representing them) and the Martell (Oberyn) symbol?

  • It’s always Croatia where people manage to get pictures of filming so I’m excited.

The set at the Belvedere is shaping up to be really cool.

  • Michel,

I believe that’s Jof’s sigil.. also holding my breath until the book purists hijack this thread and turn it into about why Brienne is still in King’s Landing for the duel and why this will ruin everything..

  • The Belvedere set looks amazing- the floor painting of the royal seal, with that ocean view in the background, just beautiful.

I wonder if this setting is for the PW, or the RV-Mountain duel. Given the royal seal, my guess is the PW.

  • “…the production has now moved to Croatia”

Does this mean that all interior photography at the Paint Hall in Belfast has been completed?

That photo of Pedro and Indria is hilarious. Can’t wait to see House Martell costuming.

  • Love love love that picture of Pedro! It looks so much more like how I pictured the Red Viper than any of his headshots.

  • FlayedManofBK,

Episodes are not filmed in order… Brienne is just filming all of her exterior King’s Landing shots which will then be inserted into the earlier episodes.

  • Skyofwelkup,

They could have Jaime offer to help her and send her away with Brienne, but her turning it down (not trusting a Lannister and already having Dontos as her getaway). She could say all her family is dead and she has nowhere to go, and that she’s faithful to Tyrion or some BS, fearing that it’s some trap (as she should). Brienne would be imprisoned, as in the books, so she wouldn’t be able to talk with Sansa herself. This adds more to the Jaime redemption arc as well as showing Sansa becoming more cunning/manipulative or whatever.

  • Roranicus,
Same. Happy to see they didn’t streamline that aspect. Hopefully he gets a badass shield, too. I’m dying to see what a Dornish accent will sound like.

  • Michel:

There likely won’t be any more casting announcements from HBO. There may be some minor castings that leak out over the next few months though.

  • Jentario,

The problem is, why would Jaime want to send her away? She is married to his brother and her entire family is believed dead. The safest place for her to be would be in King’s Landing with Tyrion, and with Jaime back, he would believe he could keep Joffrey from harming her.

  • Skyofwelkup:

Brienne is probably locked up for the PW and so can’t take Sansa back to Cat

  • Tyrion Pimpslap,

One possible thought- maybe they could have it so that Jaime considers the idea of sending Sansa to the Vale, but that wouldn’t go through due to a combination of resistance from Tywin and Tyrion and possibly Lyssa obstructing it in some way because of Littlefinger’s plans.

  • Ok, time for everyone who was anti-Pedro to apologize…looks just like I imagined him.

That set at the Belvedere is gorgeous! Can’t wait!!

  • Ashara D,

He will never look like him to them, because their complaint has to do with skin tone. It’d be nice if people would stop bringing up that debate so we can move past it.

  • haltwhogoesthere:

You just brought it up. Nice job. Now we get to see 300+ comments of people bitching about this most stupid of issues.

  • Tyrion Pimpslap: why would Jaime want to send her away? She is married to his brother

Because Jaime cares so much about the institution of marriage. As to where she would want to go, he should ask her.

  • Im a bit sad that it looks like there will be no Euron cast for this season. Speaking of Greyjoy’s has anyone heard anything about Gemma Whelan filming so far? All I have seen on her Twitter is her promoting theatre shows that she has been appearing in. I was expecting her to play a bigger role in season 4 especially after the big build up they gave her in the finale.

  • Sean C.: Because Jaime cares so much about the institution of marriage. As to where she would want to go, he should ask her.

And so began the oft-repeated eternal question, “Where do Sansas go?”

  • Chumpforce1,

Actually, I didn’t. If you were paying attention, Ashara D did, seeing as the “anti-Pedro” group solely consists of the people who got their panties in a bunch about his ethnicity. Everyone else was either reserving judgement or thought he looked fine for the part. So bringing up these anti Pedro people and wanting them to apologize is, in essence, bringing up the debate again.

  • Jentario:
    Winter Is Coming,

Should we expect Gatiss’ role to be revealed? Should we assume it’s just som
e high-profile yet spoilery identity (such as Bloodraven)?

Holy hell… Why didn’t I think of this. Although it’s early, I would love to see that.

  • Sean C.,

But he cares about his brother. In the books he thought when he heard that Sansa and Tyrion were married, “well well, Sansa Stark, Tyrion should like that,” or something along those lines.

  • I think they probably have cast everyone necessary for this season… I wasn’t expecting Dorne stuff or any Krakens appearing this season. They need to kill off a few more cast members before tackling those beasts.

  • I have to admit Pedro looks pretty tough in that photo…

God I can’t wait for this scene with him vs you know who. I hope it’s even better then Achilles vs Hector…
I absolutely loved that scene when reading the books and when it was all over was in udder shock… I had to put the book down and walk around the room, then read that segment again… Freaking overconfidence and cockiness will get you every time, just ask Darth Maul…

Will D&D ever release some new character photos with the actors in costume? I really want to see what The Red Viper looks like in full makeup/wardrobe and also what the House Martell sigil will look like.

I can’t wait to see this duel on an epic HBO and D&D scale. This little iPhone recorded college gym production manages to get my blood boiling… I can’t imagine how great it’ll be when D&D produce it…

Warning: Spoilers, do not click links unless you read Storm of Swords.

  • TheWolfofWinterfell:

I don’t think “Mark Gatiss” is strange-looking at all. He looks like a traditional English bloke, imho. Are you thinking of Joseph Gatt?

As others have speculated, Gatiss might be Mace (if he puts on a few kgs) and Gatt most likely is Styr…although I am still confounded as to why D&D decided to replace Styr’s role in the book (leading the climbing party) with Tormund Giantsbane in the show for no apparent reason.

  • It’s good that Pedro and Indria seem to be goofing around together. It will hopefully mean they’ll have better chemistry than Richard and Oona. I always felt they had none whatsoever. I was always really aware they were acting. I never felt like I was actually watching two people who have this fiery, forbidden passion that the story wanted them to have. I don’t doubt that they found each other attractive (because I mean, come on.), but I just never believed that they there was any desire there. Because it is possible to think someone is good looking but not desire them. So seeing those two making faces and having fun together is a good sign, to me.

  • Hodor’s Bastard: I don’t think “Mark Gatiss” is strange-looking at all. He looks like a traditional English bloke, imho. Are you thinking of Joseph Gatt?

Damn it.. Yes that is who I was thinking of haha.

Yeah, the Tormund thing confuses me too if they are casting styr.

  • Michel,

You think the Iron Throne has time an interest in drawing new sigils every time some lords need to settle a dispute?

Besides, this one it’s not even Martell vs Lannister. It is a Baratheon (Joffrey) vs Lannister (Tyrion) dispute they want to settle. So in the end, even if they changed decorations with each fight this would still be the correct one…

  • Mormegil: We know who Mace is.

Oops, all apologies….forgot about the Ashton-Griffiths update last month.
Any further theories on Gatiss then?

  • Michel:
Why this circle has the Baratheons and the Lannister simbol? Shouldn’t it have the Lannister (Gregor, representing them) and the Martell (Oberyn) symbol?

    It’s not a football game!

  • “There are old sellswords and bold sellswords but there are no old, bold sellswords.”.

Now imagine this line in Morgan Freeman’s voice :)

  • Abyss,

Thanks. I watched it. I didn’t know D&D were heavily into D&D, though that seems obvious.

They should know Myles McNutt, sometimes a commenter here, is the writer who coined “sexposition.”

Either here or Westeros must be where Dan stopped reading when he saw someone “complaining that you got the relative troop strength of the different families wrong.”

  • Lord Of The Waters,

From the path that Yara said she is going to sail through I’m very confident that she will be captured by Stannis on his way to the wall. If not then we will most likely see Stannis for just two episodes (9 and 10), which I find unlikely

  • Lady of Highgarden:
    haltwhogoesthere,

The thing is, in that picture with Indira, they have pretty much the same skin tone. It seems to me, anyway. :)

As with everything, the light and environment plays a key factor, especially
when pictures are taken. You can always add reason, when it makes perfect
sense to, or just believe that ” everyone else ” just ” look alike “. Just sayin’

Funny, because GRRM gets troop numbers wrong too. On purpose. He’s inconsistent because they’re told by unreliable POVs.

  • Cary Storm,

They’d make a lot of readers angry and a lot of non-raders confused with Tyrion’s trial being decided by a football game, but I’d enjoy it just for the absurdity. “I demand trial by football!”

Now that I think of it, there could be any number of options. Trial by tennis, trial by hurdles, or trial by synchronised swimming.

  • It’s not quite how I imagined the location of the trial by combat, but this location has really grown on me. It’s going to be so very spectacular.

That is very likely, and something I hadn’t considered; very effective streamlining in that Stannis and Yara get more screentime, and a few events won’t have to be shown. The kingsmoot will be problematic, however.

  • Hmm…
Will be in Croatia between 9/11 (yes, I know the date) and 18/11
Wonder it they will have already wrapped up filming by then…

  • Although the plan was to begin on the 20th of August, so it’s likely that they’re one week behind schedule?

Btw, it seems that there’s bad weather in croatia these days… doesn’t that alter their plans?

  • oierem,

I’m pretty sure they need a week of prep beforehand, and that’s the date that the papers were reporting on. Now cameras start rolling for real (can you still say that when they are all digital? well, anyhow :)).

  • Even before seeing him act, I’m starting to like Pedro Pascal. Seems a funny guy who is passionate about GoT.

  • Degausser,

Is there any reason they can’t shoot in Croatia earlier during the summer? it seems dumb to wait until September-October to shoot, when it’s more likely to rain!

  • TheWolfofWinterfell: Damn it.. Yes that is who I was thinking of haha.

Yeah, the Tormund thing confuses me too if they are casting styr.

Cause Tormund is a more important character than Styr on the long run. They have to make the audience remember him.

Styr will be a smaller role.

  • I’m sure Jamie can still charge Brienne with the task of finding Arya and bringing her to safety using oathkeeper (I think it is) and that will show him honoring his deal with Cat.
Otherwise, he can wait until after Sansa disappears and then send her out to find both.

  • “Overrated” = everyone except me is incredibly stupid for liking something that I do not. I have no confidence in the opinions of others.

  • The twitter feed on the right says that it’s the first scene of the first episode and that Natalie and Gwen are on set.. so I guess that’s Margaery in that shot, yep.

  • Croatia is a touristic country, it is very crowded in the middle of summer, but the weather is sunny during october also :)
    oierem,

  • oierem,

The crowds are too big during high season, I guess, and the weather is usually nice well into September. I’m not sure but I think they started shooting later last year and they didn’t have trouble with rain at all.

  • What was the point of bringing Brienne and Jaime back to KL so damn early anyways? So that Jaime and Cersei could share a scene with an awkward stare? They’re party is basically flying from Harrenhall to KL in the context of the episodes (LF’s jetpack anyone?).

This is why I lose faith in D&D every season, they can never make the timing work, and it comes off like they are not even paying attention (ie Cat releasing Jaime before getting news of Bran and Rickons death).

  • Ser Endrew Tarth,

Harrenhal isn’t that far from KL, and a lot of things happen between the moment they leave Harrenhal at the end of E7 and the moment Jaime arrives in Cersei’s room in E10.

Heck, a raven even had the time to fly from the Twins to KL between the end of E9 and E10… What you need to realize here is that there’s sometimes a gap of several days between two scenes (just like in the books).

As for “why bringing Jaime so soon?”.. what about you just wait and see? For one thing, it will give them the opportunity to develop his relationship with Tyrion on screen before the revelation of his betrayal (with his lie about Tysha).

Ser Endrew Tarth: and it comes off like they are not even paying attention (ie Cat releasing Jaime before getting news of Bran and Rickons death).

You’re the one who isn’t paying attention. In the context of the TV show, Cat releases Jaime because the Kastarks were going to kill him anyway.

Her getting the news of Bran and Rickon’s deaths doesn’t really matter in that context.

  • I’ll admit Pedro with the beard looks pretty badass, still it’s just going to be hard accepting anyone else playing that role than the person I had in mind.

  • Al Swearengen,

Dude just wait and see. It’s a bit ridiculous to expect them to cast the exact someone you dreamed of for the role. Give Pedro a chance. I wanted Michael Wincott to play Roose Bolton very badly but McElhatton blew me away in the end.

In fairness your comment comes off as more of reaction piece than a stated fact.

  • boze,

Yeah a weak context in the show… My unsullied family always asks questions like “Why would she let Jaime go w/out Robb’s permission” and I say “in the book she knows her boys are dead” and they are like “OHHHH! That makes a lot more sense”

They have no reason to change little details like that. Just as having Jaime arrive early messes up an amazing reunion between siblings in a sept… N2M a scene between The knight of the flowers and Jaime’s arriving party, N2M a fiasco of having Sansa still in KL as posted above. Sure they can write themselves out of these corners (unsatisfactorily as in the case of Sam escaping the cliffhanger from last season) They can make up for it, but the impact and timing is way off.

  • Ser Endrew Tarth,

The reason they had Jaime arrive in KL earlier is because it would make zero sense for it to take them 6-7 episodes(The PW likely won’t take place until the 3rd-4th episode of S4) to travel from Harrenhal to King’s Landing. The fact that Sansa will be there does not change anything. Jaime has no power to take her away. There is no place safer to send her. Bringing in Jaime and Brienne early allows for great scenes between them and the other top actors on the show. NCW is a breakout star. Keeping him on the sidelines for the second time in three seasons was not an option.

  • Ser Endrew Tarth,

It’s funny because my unsullied friends understood why Cat let Jaime go. It’s pretty apparent that Karstark was going to kill him. Brienne even says so. And for those who doubt that, he did kill two Lannister boys afterward. If Jaime dies you can bet the house that Sansa would be killed as well. Nothing would save her from Joffrey, or Cersei. Who knows what Tywin would have allowed if that had occurred. If your unsullied friends missed this cue well that’s their loss.

Also, do you really think that D and D had no reason whatsoever to change the “Bran and Rickon are dead hoax”? That makes no sense whatsoever. I doubt Benioff and Weiss out of the blue decided “hey let’s be Trolls and and change this because were assholes.” There was obviously a budgetary, practical reason why they went in that direction. In the end it comes down to the main issues that drive purists nuts:
    Not enough episodes
    Not enough time
    Not enough money
It doesn’t work on TV like it does in the book

About that last one, from a viewer standpoint it is hokey to have two storylines going where the other characters are believed dead by the others. First of all the show would be criticized for not having a crucial mourning scene for Robb and Cat’s loss. And then build up episode after episode that they are dead in one pov and alive in another. It works better in the book because we are not constantly cutting back and forth. The change D and D made also builds up the hope that at least prior to the Red Wedding there may be a reunion.

  • Tyrion Pimpslap,

Exactly! Excuses like we don’t get this awesome (yet completely extraneous) scene because they had to change this detail or that detail show to me that some cant separate the books from the show. Watching the series must be a truly sadomasochistic experience for them.

  • Joshua Atreides,

It is… :( It’s a catch 22 too because without the show I may have never found out about the books. I believe season 1 is one of the best, if not the best, book to screen translations ever done (forgiving a marrillion mistep), then season 2 is like F*%k it! Who needs the books? Between the baby’s in the jars last season, the BWB just giving up Gendry for money, and Sam magically escaping wights, it’s almost enough to give up on it entirely… but they still nail it at times as in the harrenhall bath scene.

I understand that it is a show, and has constraints (time, budget, availability) but that doesn’t explain some of the major missteps (ie fact checking like use of Iron price).

GRRM was right, his story is not adaptable to any screen, but we get a bastardized version of it. I am satisfied with that, but still want to complain on here when I see people so far up D&D rear end that they make excuses for everything.

  • Ser Endrew Tarth,

While I disagree with your assessment, I apologize for calling you a purist. That said, just because I support D and D does not mean I kiss their ass. Some may do just that. But I do have an opposite opinion culled from own logic, knowledge and albeit minor experience with the film/television industry.

  • Sean C.,

Not in my opinion. We have no idea what Jaime would have done if he arrived before Sansa escaped. What we do know is he sends Brienne to find her before Cersei’s men do. This part will not change in the show.

  • Tyrion Pimpslap,

I also look forward to non-book scenes of major POV character interactions…

It makes the show much more exciting to me because it makes it new and fresh for me. As long as D&D keep these “non-book” encounters in line with the POV characters involved ill be very happy…

The Hound vs Bronn never happened in the books but that encounter was awesome and nobody can complain about it being unrealistic because GRRM wrote it in himself. I’d like to think D&D share that kind of creative license, after all it is their show and if the characters involved stay “in-character” then what’s the issue?

Book readers should be excited we’ll be getting content that will be totally new for us. Every episode I watch I’m jealous at the new TV viewer not knowing what’s coming. It would be nice to be on board in the excitement with them for once.

I say to D&D, bring on the non-book character interactions, fights, affairs and/or verbal duels. Just as long as everyone stays in character and it doesn’t throw off any of their main storylines I’m happy with it…

  • Oh yeah speaking of non-book interactions…

I am soooo looking forward to Arya and The Hound. I find those two characters even more fascinating on the TV show then the books. They are like the perfect match.

I actually really really desire D&D to write in many non-book encounters, dialog and action involving those two.

Just getting a peek at them together in the last episode of season 3 was such a tease. Arya freaking stabbed that dude to death then the big bad Hound totally had her back and destroyed the rest of the Frey campers.

He was just pissed she didn’t tell him first, and stole his dagger… Match made in heaven!

  • I know the show had to have Jaime show up, cause it wouldn’t make sense for him to take any longer to reach KL, but I’m still forever bitter about the period sex. That is literally my favourite scene in all the five books so far =(

  • Joshua Atreides,

Lol not implying you were an “apologist” (maybe that’s the opposite of purist), nor did I think you called me a purist, though I’m sure by defenition I am one.

It’s just that I have read soooo many fiction novels in my lifetime, and this series is incredible. I’ve never read a book twice because I am always finding something new, but I cannot stop re-reading ASoIaF. It makes me laugh out loud, even when I’ve read a scene multiple times, and the depth of mystery (ie prophecy, behind the scenes machinations) are beyond anything I’ve read. How can I not be a purist?! Lol, I should’ve just waited until the tv series was done to start reading but i am way too impatient for that.

  • Arthur,

Who doesn’t want more scenes between Jaime and Tyrion? I’m excited to see what they do with Jaime this season. Jaime and Bronn, Jaime and The Red Viper, Jaime and Joffrey. The possibilities are endless!

  • Tyrion Pimpslap,

    Yeah and that’s awesome!

I’m very happy Jaime is back in KL. I like the writing D&D has done so far in all the non-book verbal duels. The kind of high class, complex, shit talking that goes on in KL between different POV characters is very entertaining.

  • Some interesting point here about what extra Jaime scenes there might be. Obviously there will be scenes with him and Cersei and him and Brienne.

I really hope we get a Jaime/ Tyrion scene. We should get at least 1 Jaime/ Tywin scene where Tywin gives him Oathkeeper. Maybe they will have Jaime sit in on small council meetings? Jaime/ Oberyn would be awesome. Maybe some early Jaime/ Tommen bonding?

  • Tyrion Pimpslap:
    Arthur,

Who doesn’t want more scenes between Jaime and Tyrion? I’m excited to see what they do with Jaime this season. Jaime and Bronn, Jaime and The Red Viper, Jaime and Joffrey. The possibilities are endless!

I’d exclude all those mentioned, except Jaime & Tyrion, for a meeting between Jaime
and his aunt ( married to a Frey ), and perhaps another ” Jaime -you disappoint me
    look from Cersei .

  • Ser Endrew Tarth,

That’s cool just remember that if D and D didn’t care about ASOIAF you would have never have learned about it in the first place. I agree there has been misteps but book I has always been a singular entity. After that it becomes an adaptation of the entire series, and it simply cannot be compressed into 10 hours of television without something being lost.

I will concede that perhaps I am not as a hardcore fan of the books as some on this site so I may be more accommodating as a viewer when certain beats are missed.

  • I have the feeling that Brienne will shout at the hanging scene “Sansa” instead of “Sword” when she will be captured

  • MaryElisabeth,

    Oh wow!
That gives me a chance to see some sets, maybe get a glimpse of some of the actors in action.
I promise I won’t get in the way. Respect for these lovely GOT actors is more important than a photo-op.
    Thanks for the info!

  • Pau:
Wtf are all this annoying vertical banners in the page all of the sudden???

One can tell from the increase in diverse advertising on WiC that GoT and related websites are steadily rising in popularity. Your issue might be a browser issue with new scripting techniques associated with relative sizing and overlaying of web page ads. Try a different browser (or upgrade it) or try adjusting your dynamic scripting settings within your browser.

  • Apparently the Morrocco Unit is being brought back over to Croatia?

I’m damn relieved if its so. The work of the Morocco Unit was vastly, vastly inferior to the main set up. The Daenerys scenes never felt authentic – they looked like a bunch of people in fancy dress pretending. It was like watching a different, inferior show.

Presumably this wasn’t their fault – with a smaller portion of the budget and less resources, it would have been more difficult.

Perhaps now the quality will be more even throughout

  • The Rabbit:
    Pau,

Install ADblok and your problem is solved – as mine was yesterday ;)

Thanks for the tip! just did and seems to work ;)

Now I only have to install it in 4 more computers…

I don’t mind banners but this fuckers appear just on top of the articles, so I can’t read them…happens both with Firefox and explorer, wich I tried just in case, and in 3 different laptops until now…just got back from vacations (Iceland is fucking awesome!), so maybe it’s the updating thing, but…

Anyway tried Adblock and seems to work, but I can tell you this banner is really annoying and can scare readers off

  • Joshua Atreides,

Yeah I should be (and am) thankful that this show came out and introduced me to such a great series of books. Season 1 nailed it and I’ve always been a Sean bean fan as well.

I’ll try to lighten up on here lol.
