Day 52: Filming at the fort of St. Lawrence

Photocredit: Dulist.hr

After several days shooting at the Hotel Belvedere, Game of Thrones location filming for season four has moved to the Walls of Dubrovnik. The flag of Westeros’ royal family is flying high over the forts of St. Lawrence and Bokar now, and a variety of goldcloaks, Lannister guards, and other extras were spotted on set. Luckily, DuList captured the first day of St. Lawrence and Bokar filming on camera.

Fans passing by were able to snap pics of the cast and crew as they set to work, including some shots of our new Mountain preparing for a fight.

Another fan was able to take a brief video of the same fight, giving us a glimpse of Gregor Clegane in action.

Ours is the Fury:  That sword is unbelievably huge. I can’t wait to to see the Mountain in action!

  • So the Mountain fighting in the above pics….

…is it part of the same fight that presumably happens at the Hotel set (spilling out of the “arena” into the crowd maybe) or is it a totally different fight?

Well the Viper does not use a sword (that guy is probably not Pedro Pascal but a stand-in to help Thor practise is to be expected), unless they’ve changed it, so it seems it ought to be a different fight. I’m thinking some Dornish men are going to ambush the Mountain before the wedding.

  • I just figured they did it that way because I have literally no clue how expensive it would be to CGI something like that…I mean obviously dragons would be crazy pricy but I figured something like that would be simple. Assumed makeup would just be sweated off.

    Thanks friends.

  • I don’t get it. In the second pic the Mountain has a normal sword. But in the first pic he has a lightsaber…D &D are ruining these books!

  • Speaking of fighting… How many action scenes do you predict will survive the standard budget cut? Aside from the viper and the mountain and blackwater 2.o?

  • It’s not too difficult to cover tattoos with makeup. They probably do have to reapply a lot when he’s sweating and fighting like that, but it’s a lot cheaper than CGI, that’s for sure.

  • Ozymandias: but Day 52 is so far away from the end. :(

The air date is not gonna change anyway, so for me ten days more shooting is actually better since this is an interesting time with lots of set pictures and reports. When filming stops it’s always a long enervating wait with anticipation rising and teasers/trailers few and far between until the last month before airing.

  • YezzanZoQaggaz:
    Ozymandias,

Assuming they didn’t shoot on weekends and they did today for some reason, it actually would be 52.

They do seem to shoot on weekends a lot, actually. Filming crews have strange hours.

Still, 52 is a nice number.

Any time you have participants in costume and a dolly camera & crew on set you’re most likely filming. If they were blocking a scene, I can see Thor being there because of his unique size but a KL extra (which is exactly what that guy looks like) wouldn’t be in costume.

My thoughts are that D&D realize that the Mountain has been talked up throughout the show but hasn’t really done anything on-screen other than decapitate a horse. They need to give him a chance to impress his ferocity on viewers prior to the big scene; the books are able to convey so much about the Mountain in ways that don’t translate well to the high-drama demands of a popular HBO show.

  • Let me tell you from experience, guys – there is make up that won’t be sweated off after a few hours of intense excersise, and it’s not even that expensive
What I don’t get, however, is why would they even bother since mountain should be filmibg in armor anyway (I guess he is just practicing here)

Yeah, this. They went to the trouble of covering Thor’s tattoos, and they have him sparring with a man in costume and they appear to have a camera on a rig in that video clip I linked- this was for a real scene. They’re building up the Mountain in the audience’s eyes, I would guess, before we see him in armor later.

  • Loki:
cantuse, aaaaaand thats reason №27 why they shouldn’t have cut Hoat the goat

LOL, Finished re-reading ACoK last night. There are so many great things about Hoat. I get a good laugh out how he betrays the Lannisters and then tracks down the Lannister allies in the riverlands by killing the people who aided him when he was working for Tywin.

I would have rather had Chyswick and Weese be Jaqen’s targets as in the books, especially since Chyswick could have related the tale about the Mountain (which helps the point I described in my earlier comment) and it would have saved the Tickler for later.

It also would have been great to see Amory get fed to the bear as well.

The Harrenhal plot was dramatically streamlined, I think primarily because having Arya around Bolton would have started telegraphing his betrayal too soon and diminished the Red Wedding. Plus a good deal of it his hard to follow on a first read; and would have felt the same on-screen. Although the bit with Elmar Frey would have been great.

Alas, I understand the changes that were made, if not entirely satisfied. :/

    Edit: hid spoilers

Makes sense, given what they did to “reduce” the Mountain for S2. I guess they would need to do something like this before the duel in order to “re-magnify” the Mountain back to his true default monstrous status. I always wondered why they didn’t directly associate the Mountain and his men with the Harrenhal massacre (via a few macabre scenes of ultra-violence) in S3, ep1, so the audience would remember the man as an evil brute and a true sociopath, rather than a sore loser and horse decapitator from S1. Since they’re not going to do the Hoat/Locke dismemberment and subsequent atrocity, then I guess another expendable character will suit this purpose.

If only he could “practice” on Loras…that would make my day….but I think I am in the minority on that idea.

  • Has there been any sightings of a director here?
Because that would give an indication as to what episode this will be.

  • Is it just me or is the man in the last two pictures with the Mountain Mark Gatiss (I think that’ s his name)? Who could he be playing?

  • Adrian:

    Thanks friends.

You pay per time and frame. So while removing tats would be simple, it would costs tens of thousands of dollars to do it for a little sequence, much less a whole fight. There are costs on a production that cost a silly amount of money that no one would ever consider. So whenever you can, you spend as little as possible.

  • Wow, Lena and Pedro seem to be having a great time in those pictures
Also lol Charles Dance he looks intimidating even when he is goofing around in the sun

  • The Loon,

I hope the wig that NCW uses looks natural. He didn’t need one during the first 3 seasons, but now he will with his short hair.

  • Maybe I’m crazy, but couldn’t this be the real fight? Maybe he won’t be wearing armor.

But I also agree that the Mountain hasn’t been built up nearly enough, in the show. He’s one of the characters that has suffered the most. In Season 1, he was originally supposed to be featured in the battle where Tyrion got knocked out, but they cut that. In Season 2 he didn’t look menacing enough. He wasn’t in Season 3 at all! They definitely need to develop him into Season 4 before the “event”.

  • TheBerylfly,

She reminds me of Gillian Anderson (Dana Scully), almost the total opposite of her role. I have half a mind to see a little more than friendship between Pedro and Lena in that picture.

  • Lex,

That’s precisely what I was thinking. They need to have the Mountain kick some tail before his big day otherwise he comes off as a big, overrated oaf.

That or some really good storytelling conveying his madness. It’s practically required that the manner of Elia’s death be bluntly hammered into viewer’s minds for this and future seasons, so I can see the storytelling angle also being the primary way his nature is communicated to the audience. Plus it probably compensates for Thor’s lack of experience as an actor.

  • Lex,

Agreed. They’ll probably have him on a killing spree in the river lands early on, do something so horrific he’ll be ingrained in our minds as a brutal monster, and then bring him in for the duel later in the season well established as a dangerous beast.

  • Yes! I was hoping he would weild it one-handed. Thought they might go two-handed for agility reasons. That sword is beautiful though.

  • Tyrion Pimpslap,

I don’t think he will wear a wig. It would make sense that he would have a shave and hair cut now that he’s back in civilization. And Cersei could moan that she liked it longer like she does in the books.

  • Azad Injejikian:

Yeah, I think they will build him up a bit more. They still have nine episodes for that.

  • Nezzer: Yeah, I think they will build him up a bit more. They still have nine episodes for that.

No, they don’t. The duel won’t be in episode 10, that’s for sure.

  • I agree with what other posters have said about D&D giving The Mountain some extra scenes before the BIG scene we all are waiting to see…

The casual viewer really has no idea what an evil monstrosity of a killing machine The Mountain is, like the book readers do. So maybe D&D plan to give the casual viewer a glimpse as to just how powerful and barbaric The Mountain is.

Will be awesome to see and I am really loving this Thor guy…

  • Off topic, but I was flippng around the channels this morning and happened on Suits. Not only was Michele Fairley on portraying a murder suspect, but Conleth Hill was portraying her father’s gay lover who had somehow mistakenly implicated her in the murder.

His voice is so distinctive, it was very difficult to separate him from Lord Varys, even with hair.

  • Oh, and I wasn’t able to view the video of the new Mountain,,,:(

Does anyone have a different link to it? Thanks!

  • cantuse,

All true, and not just Harrenhal , with respects to events concerning Arya & Bolton,
as well as earlier events Tywin and Jaqen were in place at the same time. We
instead got repeated , yet very good, scenes of a softer lord Tywin. I hate the
fact that television has affected me to have a crush on Tywin, and Locke ( aka,
the man from the ” Princess Bride ” look-a-like ). That and looking forward to
Littlefinger’s machinations. Damn near perfect onscreen production *>*

  • Darkstar,

Yes, the only reason I’m watching Suits this season is for Michelle Fairley and Conleth Hill. You’re right that it’s hard to separate Conleth from the Varys role but he and Michelle are both doing a great job, and after 8 episodes, I believe their new roles.

  • The guy playing the Mountain should definitely keep the dark hair and beard when he’s done with this. It makes him look a lot younger than he did before haha.

  • Fiona,

OMG this Thor guy is so perfect! Where the hell has he been? I hope he gets many more roles to come in medieval fantasy type films.

He looks so young though what a baby face he looks like he is 19-22 or something… They need to put wrinkles on his face and make him look more mean lol…

  • Rygar,

The acting was great and intense because season 1 really built up for that showdown but the action itself wasn’t good IMO.

But yes the emotion involved with that face off was amazing.

  • Beric vs the Hound was by far the best fight scene GoT has produced – and is up there with some of the best filmed sword fights ever. I don’t even particularly like that scene in the book, but in the show it’s fantastic.

  • Fiona,

    Lol…

Lena better get close to that huge man…

Because that’s her champion and will always be her champion. Though his name will be changed to Sir Robert Strong, he will always be her bodyguard. He’s the one that comes and carries her off to protection after her walk of shame

  • On that Thor picture he asks if he should shave his beard. Might mean he is done shooting which probably means he doesn’t have too many scenes.

  • Arthur: Fiona, Lol…Lena better get close to that huge man…Because that’s her champion and will always be her champion. Though his name will be changed to Sir Robert Strong, he will always be her bodyguard. He’s the one that comes and carries her off to protection after her walk of shame

For some reason, after that scene in ADwD, I couldn’t stop laughing. It was so odd…and perfectly insane.

  • In one of this pics you can see a canon in the tower window… That’s bad, hope D&D notice that and take they out in post production. There is no gunpowder in Westeros.

Actual you can see 2 canons. That’s bad. You can see the barrel sticking out of 1 canon and a complete canon in the window facing the shot.

    How can they miss that?

  • It’s possible that The Mountain will have his duel without his armor. Though I doubt it. The armor has a huge effect on the strategy of the battle. The Red Viper needs to pick his spots and we need to hear spearpoint screeching on metal :]

  • Turncloak,

Yeah there is no way he won’t have armor on in the big scene.

I’d wager this scene is D&D trying to give the casual TV viewer an idea of just who The Mountain is and what he is capable of doing…

  • Lol…

Wouldn’t it be funny to see Peter standing next to The Mountain in a pic like Lena is in that shot?

GoT has the littlest man and the biggest man on the same set… So funny!

  • Lol… One more thing…

I hope D&D (specifically David) don’t take Thor out drinking. Because David might get drunk and ask Thor to:

    1) Arm wrestle
    2) Play hand slaps
    3) Play mercy

Lol, if David does these things with a worlds strongest man I think we may lose one of the creators of our beloved show… If Jason crushed his hands than imagine what Thor would do…..

    Dave! Don’t challenge this man!!!

Well if that are indeed his feet on that picture… gonna be awkward, man)

  • Bard,

So, based on these photos, Fabian Wagner will be the DP on 406 and 407 (director Alik Sakharov). He was nominated for an Emmy for Sherlock.

  • iRaven: Umm … is that a person skewered on the end of his sword?

…or what’s left of him! Wow..his whole body is being raised and tossed by the sword….damn.

  • Bard,

Probably showing the audience the Mountain again before it comes to the big fight 1 or 2 episodes later.
You know, that everyone is like “Shit! Tyrion’s champ has to defeat THAT ONE??”

  • Great snooping guys!

    Bard,

I reckon Oberyn vs The Mountain will be in Episode 8, as D&D said that some of their favorite moments in the entire series were in the last three episodes. And that should qualify as one of them!

  • Family, Duty, Hodor:

    Seconded

  • I can’t help it. On the 6th pic down (showing the castle tower and flag) I expect a frenchman to peer over the edge and say:

“Go boil your bottoms, sons of a silly person! I fart in your general direction! Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries! Now leave before I am forced to taunt you a second time!”

(It would be so cool to have a member of MP as an extra or minor speaking char in GoT)

  • Currently staying within the castle walls in Dubrovnik… Any suggestions where I can place myself for a higher chance to be picked up as an extra?? I have already submitted an app with Embassy Casting a couple days ago.

    ANY advice is appreciated?
