Day 72: Filming in Diocletian’s Palace & Žrnovnica
By Ours is the Fury on in Filming.

Emilia

With the Emmys over, the khaleesi is back in action on the set of Game of Thrones. Filming began today in the cellars of Diocletian’s Palace in Split, Croatia, and Emilia Clarke was spotted this morning in costume. Several extras dressed as slaves were also present, according to Split.com.hr, who snapped several photos of the shooting process. It is not known at this time which scenes are being filmed in the palace’s cellars.

Additionally, thanks to the UK’s Daily Mail, we’ve got new images of the filming of the Unsullied taking place in the Žrnovnica region of Split. As previously speculated, the quarry in the settlement is being used for the more arid regions in Dany’s storyline, as the show’s production will not be returning to Morocco.

Ours is the Fury: So speculate away- what do people think Daenerys is up to at Diocletian’s Palace?

Won’t Daenerys plot have any new character? It would be strange if she only interact again with the many characters of Season 3 (Jorah, Daario, Missandei, Selmy, Grey Worm)

Well it certainly has to be taking place in Mereen. And when you say they are filming in the cellars of the palace I wonder if they are shooting the scene where she locks in her dragons in the dungeons of Mereen…

    Michel,

we don’t really know. HBO hasn’t made any official casting announcements this year besides Oberyn, Ellaria, and Mace. Sort-of Mark Gatiss but not his role. The rest were castings discovered by sites like WiC, or like when we discovered Michiel Huisman and then Hollywood Reporter found out he was Daario. So it’s possible there are more characters in Dany’s storyline, but there just haven’t been any discoveries.

Dany has a new wig and a new blue dress, and both look more beautiful then the last ones.

Why they don’t announce the premiere date? I want to see the clock ticking. And it’s almost October… last year they announced it in July.

Looks like the path to Meereen. I think they’re going to make Dany’s arc this season more centered around vengeance (since that would be the recurring theme of the season). My guess is that when the season begins, Dany would be making plans to get to Westeros but then the slave children would be killed and placed on crosses pointing to Meereen, which would make her march to the city against the requests of all of her advisors. The Jorah fling also has to happen this season, culminating in his exile. If I were D&D I’d put a face on the bad guy this season (kind of like Kraznys 2.0) to set up the Harpy storyline (he would be killed this season and his successor will be a mystery in seasons 5 and 6), and we may yet see castings for the likes of BBP and Hizdahar leaving the Green Grace for season 5. I think we’re in for two or three more casting reveals this season.

    Alvis,

I actually think it’s too early, too, but they don’t stick much to the books anymore so who knows? From what I understood for S4 they will use the remaining of Storm of Swords and then take stuff from Feast and Dance and incorporate that. So I don’t think it impossible that she will lock them away this season already, but who knows. I agree her hair is very pretty :)

  18. Isolde
    Posted September 27, 2013 at 12:09 pm | Permalink

Probably totally out of context, but I wonder why they always make her wear blue dresses. It looks very pretty on her, it works great with the white hair, no doubt, but I would looove if she wore something in the Targaryen colors. Just like Cersei often wears the Lannister colors and has lion symbols incorporated in her dresses and jewelery. I think that would be nice. Dany is all about I’m the last Dragon, but she hasn’t worn her houses colors once.

    Wow,

The Dany storyline budget is going to be so expensive but the quality and ability for HBO to pull off the Hollywood budget movie type CGI is one of many ways GoT really flexes its muscles. What other pay-for premium cable channel can pull this off? None… They better stick to cookie cutter dramas, at least that cookie cutter format may win them some Emmys…

Leave the Epics to HBO, with or without a major Emmy win GoT is still the only Epic on TV. I’d like other premium cable channels to wet their feet in an Epic format sometime soon, we will see if that ever happens… I really hope so.

Dany always looks amazing, I hope D&D continue to develop her character into a total badass but make sure the TV viewer sees her stumble along they way while trying to rule her people as a queen.

I still must ask… Will Dany’s dragons be bigger is season 4? Lol, when will D&D release that information?

    Isolde,

I’ve been thinking that it might have to do with her humanitarian self-conception. She might want to be a conqueror, but she generally downplays the Fire and Blood stuff a bit.

I’ve speculated that were Danaerys to to insane/evil, she’d probably start dressing more like a Targaryean.

Arthur, yeah, just imagine AMC or Showtime getting the adaptation rights to GoT. Like they wouldn’t even film the battle on the fist of first men, or theons siege of winterfell, or jaimes capture, or battle on the green fork. Thank god we have HBO which can pull off such elaborate scenes.

    Jordan,

Nope, again it comes down to symbols…. Women are often associated with water, hence why colours of blue, white, aqua etc are used to associate them with this. It is the balance, she has her dragons, fire & blood, the white hair and blue garments reveals the duality of her character. The giver of life or death at will.

Seriously… no Hodor in this thread??

I just finished a re-read of ASoS. Dany’s storyline doesn’t seem to end on much of a ‘big’ note. I mean, her declaration to stay and rule as queen *could* be a powerful cap to her Season 4 storyline, that depends on selling it extremely well from a filmmaking and acting perspective. It’s a whole lot easier (and sometimes reliable – to the dismay of book purists) to simply move storyline elements around and fabricate others to create something more ‘water-cooler’ worthy.

  28. Isolde
    Posted September 27, 2013 at 12:36 pm | Permalink

    Jordan,

You could be on to something there, but I don’t see Dany becoming evil, or even insane. She certainly becomes more ruthless, she already is much more ruthless than she was in the beginning, but as Ser Jorah said, she has a gentle heart and she will always have it. She will be more and more merciless with her enemies, though, that’s for sure. I can see her finally donning her Targaryen colors on when she finally makes it to Westeros. I can see her starting to wear those colors after the last scene from Dance, where she literally became a dragon by feeding on Drogons prey and emerging from fire and ash just like in GoT, yet differently, when the Khalasar arrived. In GoT when she emerged from the ashes she became the mother of dragons. In Dance whens he emerges from the ashes, she is not only the mother of dragons, but a dragon herself.

Not too soon at all. In fact, it’s the logical conclusion of Dany’s season 4 arc. The dragons grow out of her control, killing the people that she is trying to protect. In order to safeguard the slaves she freed, she is forced to put her children in chains. It’s tragicly ironic and a perfect thematic mirror to her ending in season 3.

Even though the Meereen storyline isn’t my favorite, I’m really looking forward to how they make it look. It would be cool to see the immobilizing tokars and the weird hairstyles. Hopefully they CGI the pyramids in there. Even if it’s just once as an establishing shot.

I’m going to see MS MR from the season 3 trailer tomorrow. It should be cool because it’s at a small intimate venue. I only know that one song, but I think it will probably be good.

    Loki,

I saw GoT on a list of ‘Adaptions that improved upon the source material’ recently. Can’t remember where but they said they thought the show is better cause it cuts outs all the filler. I don’t really agree, I love the book and the show both. However it does go to show that not everyone agrees with your opinion.

Also, most of the things you mentioned were cut because of budget restrictions. I’m sure they would have loved to have done the battle of the Green Fork and the Battle of the Fist but this all costs money. Also it must be difficult filming in the arctic conditions of Iceland let alone film a huge battle sequence. I find it is far more important that the show always delivers on the most important moments. Blackwater, The Red Wedding, The birth of the dragons etc

I have to guess that the scenes being shot here in the city are set either in Yunkai (set at the beginning of this season). There is no way that anything sufficient will be filmed for Mereen. The end of Dany’s story in book three is just too perfect to change.

They wouldn’t have picked up the show at all. And if they would, it would be as different from the books as you could imagine- the cast wouldn’t have been half as big and we would never have gotten Blackwater. HBO is the best for this kind of show, there’s no contest.

Has anyone seen any serious roles he may have played? I’ve only seen him in Plebs so I can’t picture him as Hizdahr!? Plus I always pictured Hizdahr as older (like late 30′s early 40′s) than Dany.

Gotta say, I love the books and TV series but I agree and disagree that the TV series improves upon the books. There is a lot of “filler” in the books, in my opinion, that slows down the action but sometimes adds color to the background or other details that become important later. It would be mind-numbing to watch and cost-prohibitive to include lots of exposition scenes when there are only so many minutes of air time.

That being said, the TV series has been too light on prophesy, visions and dreams from the books which I think are going to be relevant to the future story and I don’t know how the show runners will make up for that.

I can venture a guess as to what Daenerys will be doing in the basement of Diocletian’s Palace. I agree that it’s probably chaining up the dragons.

Hollyyyyy!!! Wow he will most definitely do as The Mountain. When I first saw his YouTube competition and training videos I knew that Nina Gold had another winner on her hands. While I will say ’till the end of days that Conan Stevens was the original Mountain, our newest cast member, the real mighty “Thor” will be outstanding!

Man and Lena herself is quite tall but next to him she looks soo tiny! I’d like to see a picture of Emilia with Thor, she’ll barely reach his hips LOL!

    Filming is Essos again, finally.
There may have been production in NI, since Clarke has supposedly been on set since the start of September.

So will she name the dragons this season?

Will she ever get a crown, hopefully a dragon crown?

(I would be cool if someone in Meereen or from the outside presented her with her mother’s crown which Viserys sold.
    That would be cool.

Her deciding to stay would be a disappointing ending to the season, possibly a fanbase-decreasing one. I think it would be much better to wrap up her ASOS story by episode 7, spend episode 8 introducing her to the political climate in Meereen, and in episode 10 drop the revelation that (ADWD) Drogon has been eating children. That would be a much more satisfying ending to the season, and it will lessen the disappointment by making it clear that she isn’t ready to invade Westeros yet.
