Dramatic set photos from Ballintoy Harbour
By Winter Is Coming on in Filming.

Filming has wrapped in Croatia, but that doesn’t mean the end of season 4 set photos. These dramatic photos of a night shoot in progress at Ballintoy Harbour, courtesy of a local politician’s blog, show what looks to be Stannis’s men burning three prisoners at the stake.

Winter Is Coming: Great photos! I can’t make out any of the principal actors in these photos, but Carice van Houten was recently in Northern Ireland, so presumably she was there for this shoot. What do you think is going down in this scene (besides the obvious)?

Perhaps Stannis’ voyage to the wall is going to take quite a while/something else is going to happen along the way? Stannis makes a sacrifice to get himself there more quickly?

In the books Stannis and Melisandre burn Alester Florent alive for favorable winds to get to the Wall (as recalled afterwards by Davos in DwD). I assume it’s something along those lines, but since they don’t have Florent cast they just put three random prisoners out there to be burned

I hope Salladhor Saan will be there to take them North (that old Lyseni ought to show up at least once per-season). My first thought of the Dragonstone subplot was how this scene would be handled (if even at all), so seeing it like this before they’ve even added the effects is fantastic. Maybe they’ll even return to Pyke too, which must’ve been what most of us were thinking when “Ballintoy Harbour” came up in the title.

    Turncloak,

How is this a spoiler? In the show (I cannot remember which episode) Mel basically told Stannis he had to go north to the Wall when she informed Stannis that he could not execute Davos for sending Gendry back to King’s landing. Unsullied, at this point, know Stannis is going to the Wall.

    direhound,

As always with these sort of things, I am very sceptical of the validity of it. However, IF the guy is actually an extra I think we can take 2 (or possibly 3) things from it so far:
    1) Grenn and Edd are indeed alive. The theory that they died at Craster’s Keep, and that their role will be taken by Locke is disproved.
    2) no Coldhands until the end of the season, so the fears that he would get through all of his Dance stuff this season were misplaced.
    3) either a) Tormund’s attack from the south is a separate thing, so the theory it would happen at the same time as the siege was wrong OR b) the siege is happening over several episodes. Or both. If b is true I will be very happy
    .
But there is, of course, nothing there that couldn’t be guessed at by book readers, so I would say that the chances of it being fake are high.

    Leto II,

I doubt it. Although the left and middle ones could be wearing Wildling gear, the one on the right most certainly is not, so I think it is just the lighting in the shot.

EDIT: Also, the scenery is definitely that of Dragonstone, not the North.

It is important to know the Melisandre and Stannis mean business when it comes to the threat of burning. Burning statues of the Seven was deeply offensive to members of that religion but it isn’t sufficiently scary.

    AWESOME photos.

Perhaps they are Florents? They could find some way to rework the storyline from the books of the Florent (forget which one) who was picked as Stannis’ Hand while Davos was thought dead, who tried to betray Stannis by suing the Lannisters for peace behind his back and promising them Shireen.

Since for dramatic purposes Stannis’ rescue of the Wall is best left for somewhere in the last three episodes of the season, arguably, they have to fill out his storyline with something else other than an immediate sail. In the series Davos said Stannis would need him to raise an army again, so they need to follow up on that. Presumably, the implication in the TV series is that Stannis has literally no army right now, so to avoid a sense of deus ex machina we have to see him raise one somehow.

    Jentario,
Perhaps they have Bronn arrested because of his allegiance to Tyrion? If they try and hunt down Tyrion’s friends after Joffrey’s wedding it could also explain why Pod leaves the city earlier than in the books.

    JP Dayne,
    As I said above:
    1) The scene is clearly taking place on Dragonstone
    2) The one on the right is most definitely not in Wildling clothing, and I would argue that the one in the middle isn’t either.
Conclusion: The other two appearing to be in Wildling gear is most likely a trick of the light.

All true, and good theory, it clears up the Pod thing. I have to say, though, Jerome Flynn was pretty clear on the show diverging from the books (for his character). That would be a nice change IMHO. He could always find a noblewoman to marry in the Riverlands, with Jaime’s help. There must be plenty of widows in the Riverlands now. His keep doesn’t really need to be in the Crownlands. They could give him Darry instead of Stokeworth, and it is kinda pointless to give Darry to Lancel since he abdicates his title to join the Warrior Sons.

God, if they start changing Bronn’s storyline now… I agree that it would be nice to see him after season 4, but we just have to let him go.. If he goes to Essos with Tyrion do you think he’ll just stand idly by while Jorah kidnaps him? They’ll mess up the entire Meerenese knot worse than what it is in the book.

Cool….as long as Jaime pays him well. After Tyrion left KL, I thought GRRM almost wrote Bronn out of the tale anyway. What a waste to have him idle in Stokeworth. I have a feeling he is doomed in TWoW. It would be a welcome change to have him serve a more active role in GoT.

This scene is probably to show gratitude to Rhllor after the three “gifts” he will give to Stannis by mid season 4..

I hated Stannis at first but I think from this season onwards he will become a favorite for the iron throne I started rooting for him after his journey through the north in ADWD

‘I defeated your uncle Victarion and his Iron Fleet off Fair Isle, the first time your father crowned himself. I held Storm’s End against the power of the Reach for a year, and took Dragonstone from the Targaryens. I smashed Mance Rayder at the Wall, though he had twenty times my numbers.
