MGoT: Wedding Planning
By Winter Is Coming on in Filming.

While we may be still some months away from our first real glimpse of season 4, behind the scenes writer Cat Taylor continues to whet our whistle with her excellent blog posts for Making Game of Thrones. In her latest dispatch from the Seven Kingdoms, she details one of the biggest upcoming scenes of season 4, the Royal Wedding.

While the ceremony itself was filmed in one of our semi-permanent sets in Belfast, the Sept of Baelor, the reception was filmed in a beautiful outdoor set located in Parc Gradac in Dubrovnik, Croatia. The park was transformed by our new Production Designer, Deb Riley, and her team into everything you might desire from a Royal Wedding carnival, with elaborate decorations, an epic feast and the most creative and unexpected forms of entertainment for the guests.

Filmed over a five day stretch, we waited with bated breath each day for the clouds to roll in and dampen our fun. Weather reports suggested imminent downpours at the end of the week, and only a few days before, water funnels had formed off the coast in the height of a rain storm. Aside from one short and dramatic burst where Costume scrambled to get all the extras under cover and everyone rushed to protect props, we were spared the worst of the predictions.

In terms of principal cast members in attendance, the Royal Wedding was one of the largest scenes we’ve filmed since the premiere season, with 23 named parts appearing on any given day. In addition, we were delighted to welcome 218 extras as guests to the event, some of them travelling from the other side of Europe and the United States to be a part of the experience. Lookout for some familiar faces in the crowds – Pixie Le Knot is back this year, and one of our crew makes an appearance with the entertainers.

Winter Is Coming: The wedding scenes in Game of Thrones are always fantastic and this one should be no different.

That’s 21 “named” characters that I could think of and I’m not sure all of them would necessarily appear. Perhaps Roose/Fat Walda and/or Walder Frey are in attendance as well as some have speculated. The actress who plays Fat Walda is only scheduled to appear in E2 and that’s the one when the Royal Wedding is taking place.

There aren’t going to be a ton of opportunities to feature Roose (or Walder for that matter) in S4 so his attendance would make some sense.

There’s also a little matter of a marriage partner for his son that he’ll want to take care of.

I’m really hoping Kevan Lannister (played by Ian Gelder) is one of those 23 named parts, but somehow I doubt it. Gelder doesn’t have a Twitter, nor do I know of any other way to contact him in order to ask.

I believe Eugene Simon (Lancel Lannister) basically said on Twitter recently that he hasn’t returned since season 2 and “We shall have to see what happens” to Lancel in the future. So, that’s not sounding good, either.

Interesting what you and others are implying here…but there are issues…
If Roose comes for “Arya” to do the Ramsay deal, where is “Arya” during the PW? Locked up? Wouldn’t Roose (or others) have a chance to discuss this with Sansa at the PW or before? No one at the PW believes the real Arya remains in KL (right?). Are you implying that Roose is involved in the Arya/JP mummery with Jaime/Steelshanks? So when they return north, maybe Brienne will travel with him for a while. She will know about the mummery and will be looking for clues to find the real Arya. Interesting.

We’ve seen enough behind the set photos to know she’s done a great job. Sure the giant lion head looks completely ridiculous but “what good is the word extravagant if it can’t be used to describe a royal wedding?”

Gemma’s really set the bar high with her and Michele Clapton’s “melting pot” approach to designs, and I’m sure that’s a tradition that will keep going as long as the show does.

I honestly have no idea what they’re going to do with that plot. They had several chances to set up a character like Jeyne Poole and decided not to. So either they’ll retrofit some kind of stuff that would have had to happen offscreen in previous seasons or they’ve got another direction they want to go.

In reality, you don’t actually need a fake Arya. It’s a means to an end to get the Northern lords to Winterfell, to give Theon a character to “save” as part of his redemption arc and goad Jon into leaving the Wall. Once those plot points are served, Jeyne Poole serves no further purpose and appears to be dropped out of the story completely.

The logistics of it in terms of the Lordship and “heir” issue is not really relevant to the show (according to Roose and Walder’s conversation in the S3 finale, Roose appears to have already simply been “awarded” Winterfell as the new Warden of the North).

You can accomplish the “Winterfell gathering”, “Theon saves an innocent” and “Jon pisses off the NW to the point of assasination” plot points through other means. I’d prefer if they just dropped the whole farce in the first place so the TV audience doesn’t have to suspend their disbelief to a ridiculous level. That whole arc always bothered me in the books because it depends on most involved being complete morons for it to work. It’s also a farce that you can get away with more on the page since you don’t have the visual of how little Jeyne Poole looks like Arya staring you in the face constantly.

I’ll be interested to see where they go with it.

Agreed. Thx. I strongly agree that the Arya mummery storyline from the books insulted the northern Lords, although the ridiculous farce that was the Ramsay-”Arya” wedding was one of those brilliant/awkward/deranged moments that only GRRM can provide. I would like to see a more convincing ramp-up though.

I was always hoping that GoT Brienne would somehow be involved in any GoT “Arya” mummery in order to serve her own mission (and try to draw out the real Arya from hiding), but ends up meeting LS instead. Probably a conflicting interest on my part, but Brienne’s arc will probably change for GoT. Poor Pod! /b>

Although the TWoW Theon chapter clues have been debated extensively, I am hoping that this mummery will suddenly stop and Winterfell will erupt from within once the Northern Lords realize that Stannis and Co. are close by and have survived the blizzard/initial battle. King DBC,

It’s a misspelling but that doesn’t mean that the callsheet is fake.

Too many things point to it being real. It mentions contortion and we have Pixie LeKnot there. It mentions Cersei seeming happy around Tywin and this refers to a scene mentioned in http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0SV8jLn6Bjs this Julian Glover interview at 14:11. She is happy around Tywin because she has just made fun of Pycelle.

Also the bit at the bottom about Craster’s Wood being in ep. 4 matches with the casting of Rast’s actor in a Michelle MacLaren episode this season and that of the lady playing “Morag Craster” also in a MacLaren episode.

I really wish we knew the number that corresponded with each actor so we would know who will definitely be in this scene.

Here’s my best guess, based on order of character appearance:

    1. Sansa
    3. Cersei
    5. Jaime
    10. Joffrey
    13. Tyrion
    14. Varys
    16. Pycelle
    20. Loras
    32. Tywin
    41. Kevan
    49. Shae
    52. Dontos
    56. Brienne
    57. Podrick
    64. Margaery
    67. Roose
    68. Olenna
    76. Tommen (originally Martyn’s number)
    102. Oberyn
    110. Mace

    This leaves:
    Ellaria
    Walda

Who else could be missing? I don’t think we’ll see Bronn at the wedding, at least not in these shots. Possibly not Shae, either, though I included her. I would also assume some numbers would be between Roose and Olenna, since their first appearances were a season apart. So that’s clearly not accurate! Perhaps Roose and Walda won’t be needed for these scenes, though.

Anyone else want to take a stab at it?

    GreatJon of Slumber,

Nikolaj has been credited before Lena Headey in S3, so i don’t think that’s the order. They usually add actors on those sheets in the order they’re called for the fitting. At least that’s how it works on other shows.

    Tyrion Pimpslap,

I don’t think the Joffrey reveal is possible on the show since the scene between Cersei and Jamie in S1 already confirmed Jamie was the one who sent the assassin.

??? No it didn’t. Cersei is chiding him for shoving Bran. An assassin is never mentioned. In fact, Cersei asks him “What if he wakes up?” and Jaime says “We’ll tell them he’s lying. I think we can outfox an 8 year old.” This conversation comes after the assassination attempt. Cersei and Jaime aren’t even aware that there was one.

    Kyle,

You bring up some interesting points, Kevan Lannister’s role indeed has been
diminished, as would be Lancel’s, from S2 to present. It will be interesting to
learn how the production regards future material that concerns them both.
If the script dismisses certain events, there remains enough to work with, to
emphasize Jaime’s journey to Riverrun, and skipping that awesome
discussion / confession of Lancel. Nonetheless, the events surrounding
Lancel’s guilt, also had great impact on ser Kevan
    . I’m hopeful that
the production has a pragmatic plan………. right (?)

Valyrian Plastic: Maybe Kevan will be helping a frail Lancel into his seat. I know it’s been discussed already (by me as well), but that’s just what happens with 10-months of waiting and speculation in the end.

It’s all but confirmed that Lancel won’t be returning this season. The actor practically said on his Twitter that he wasn’t called back for this season. Hopefully he’s teasing or something, though I can see why his character hasn’t been needed lately.

I’m still holding out hope that Kevan will return. Otherwise, why would they have included him in the S2E9 meeting at Harrenhal? It’s clear they wanted us to remember that he’s still around, otherwise any of the other men at the table could’ve spoken his lines. Out of everyone that’s been missing for a while, Kevan’s complete disappearance would be one of the most disappointing to me. He has been a favorite of mine.

I want them to milk the viper

Also, since there’s so much plot to cover in the first two episodes, do you think they’ll still use episodes 1 and 10 as catch up and summary episodes where all the seperate character groups are in it? I hope not. 3×10 felt a little rushed at the end, pushing the Jaime and Dany plots straight in there just for the end.
Plus they won’t really be able to do that in Season 5 when there’ll be sooooooo many seperate plots after people leave KL + Dorne + Iron Islands + characters going to Essos

I don’t think the Northern Lords believe she’s Arya either but they’re not really in a position to argue the point (yet) so they’re just going to have to suck it up and say nothing. It’s all a bit of theatre to stop people from aggitating for a Stark to take over Winterfell.

I agree. I think the northern lords are biding their time and are planning on joining Manderly/Glover. Whatever the case, it’s hard to imagine them doing occupied Winterfell without fArya. Maybe they’re using the brown haired Septa/whore. We know she’s in season 4 for some reason. I think they’ll want someone who is an adult but young looking.

Absolutely, he really came across as a more reasonable leader than Tywin later in the books, but still unafraid of pulling punches (similar to the incest defense Tywin used on Olenna). He would probably try resolving conflicts with pure council negotiation, rather than the mass-extermination of entire houses. shame it cost him his life really.

‘Hope they kept the bit where Tyrion jests to Joffrey that he’ll only joust with him, followed in quick succession by the humiliating face-full of wine on his scars & forcing him to play cupbearer. It’ll be the perfect way to say to viewers, “don’t mourn him, he’s an ill-born bastard who had it coming from the start. ”

The reactions to this season for unsullied will be pretty huge, not just because of how Joffrey dies, but because up until now they’ve all been expecting the “good guys” to perish and the likes of Joffrey & Tywin to live on. To have them both killed in a single season will remind them that George doesn’t actively seek to kill the reader’s/viewer’s heroes, he does these things because that’s just how the story plays out.

There’s a nice preview of season 4 in either Total Film or Empire Magazine where some of the actors and David and Dan give some titbits of what to expect. Just beware a huge spoiler for non-book readers. I have no link, I leafed through the magazine in a shop the other day (can’t remember which one it was, sorry, can someone please check?).

    Of what I remember reading:
I have no doubt that the above discussed episode will be epic, but D and D states that the last three episodes of the season are their apparent favourites, since, just as with the Red Wedding, they contain scenes which they have been waiting for to film ever since they wanted to adapt the books (speculate away).

Also, season four will apparently start with a bang and immediately pick up pace, unlike the slower build-up with previous seasons, which could explain the early placement of the PW, thus also hopefully avoiding the rushed prologue/ epilogue episodes. With the duel in ep 8, as many suspect, the slump around that phase in the season can be avoided since people have complained in the past that previous eighth episodes were boring. So now we can speculate what could happen in episode ten if nine will be Jon-centric. That Tywin Lannister doesn’t shit gold maybe? :)

Interestingly Natalia Tena , if I remember correctly, mentioned she had no casting call for season 4. She seemed unconcerned.
I find that a little surprising, since I thought she was one of D&D’s favorites, however it means ‘invented’ story for her, and there is only so much time in 10 episodes.
I guess that means no Rickon story in season 4.

For all those who downplay Kit’s acting abilities, it looks like he is the first actor out of the young GoT talent group to make it into the big budget Hollywood world.

He stars in an epic coming out next year called ‘Pompeii’. I am a totally straight male but I can honestly say he looks really badass and pretty freaking awesome and can see why so many females love this dude.

    Pompeii
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nLfQ9_WOnNc

He also landed a part in another epic called ‘Seventh Son’, I couldn’t see him in this trailer but the movie itself looks awesome. It might be Kit at 23 seconds in trying to throw chains on that dragon, not sure though.

    Seventh Son
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-GfwIak2tH8

I don’t think he would have landed these roles if during his auditions the directors thought his acting skill was weak, yes he is very attractive but good looking males and females in Hollywood come a dime a dozen.

Basically, I think him landing these roles is evidence that the reason why many GoT fans dislike the Jon Snow storyline to date is more about the writing/storyline then the acting ability with Kit.

I personally find nothing wrong with Jon’s TV storyline but I really am looking forward to see Jon become the man he does after his return from beyond The Wall. I think Kit will have a lot more to work with and will be giving a chance to shine and act up to his full potential. No more naïve Jon Snow…

Well Kit, you have a HUGE fan following that mostly know you from GoT and this would mean this huge following are mostly people who enjoy the medieval fantasy type movies/series…

So the director/producers of similar type movies genres via Pompeii and Seventh Sons hope to tap into that following by casting you as a character in their movie. This would create immediate buzz and your fan base will go see the movie generating more ticket sales.

    Hodor’s Bastard,

I just finished this panel now also, it was really good, GRRM is so smart and Lena and Michele are so funny.

I think the really revealing thing as far as season 4 and beyond goes is this…

Several times during this panel Michele gets teased about having her character killed and not being alive, all of which Michele response is kind of a hint that Lady Stoneheart will be in the TV series. She says stuff like “Yeah I’d like to play a character whos heart is still beating”…

If it was just a one time comment I really would have dismissed it, but she says stuff like that several times and her body language and eye contact with Lena kind of gives it away. I really think LS will come to us in the TV series and D&D are trying to keep a very tight wrap on it.

I bet Michele, as an actress, will have a very limited role as LS because any female with her height and body type can stand in for a hooded Lady Stoneheart, however Michele will need to be present for scenes when the hood comes off. In this way D&D can write up a contract to contain Michele as a character in GoT but because of the very limited role D&D will not break the budget and have to pay her as much as before.

I am sure Michele would agree to it because its like a big family there…

Whatever the correct term would be. You know what I mean, the time it would take for Michele to shoot all her scenes as LS would be minimum and not hamper her from taking on any other projects because the stand-in “hooded” LS could be played by anyone with Michele’s physical appearance.

I thought the “winter is coming” bit near the end was inspired thinking. The moderator was perfect. GRRM is often fascinating as he explores darkness within and without, and a perfect companion to Lena and Michelle during the panel.

“Purple” or “Poison” Wedding (PW) is a fan thing not a book thing. But “purple” is usually associated with royal KL activities. It is also the color that the red wine that Joff drank changed to after (Garlan? Margaery? Olenna? Tyrion? Penny?) inserted the poison (“Stranger”) into the goblet. I’m sure it was also one of the colors that Joff’s face turned before it blackened with death.

I can’t wait to see this play out on screen. How will they depict the hairnet extraction, the goblet infiltration, the Joff/Tyrion chiding, the choking, the pointing, the escaping…? Will someone start giving Joff CPR, will Cersei go mad? Jaime’s reaction? Will the showrunners cause more mayhem? In any case, this will be an awesome visual.

    Hodor’s Bastard,

I hope to see a more extensive witchhunt in the couple episodes following, implemented by Cersei, with lots of characters being arrested or interrogated in the search for Sansa or anybody complicit with the murder, like Shae or Oberyn or Brienne – Brienne specifically, so that Jaime can go behind Cersei’s back to release her to send her on a search for Sansa, and thereby escalate tension between Jaime and Cersei.

  116. Greenjones
    Posted November 16, 2013 at 6:46 pm | Permalink

The callsheet says that Brienne speaks to Joffrey and Margaery “at the royal table”. Here’s my two cents on that. We know that episode one features a scene with Brienne speaking to Margaery and the Queen of Thorns from this earlier wicnet post http://winteriscoming.net/2013/08/new-photos-from-trsteno-and-gradac-park/. So we have Brienne speaking to Margaery once and then again. Now what would this be about?

I think that Margaery will tell Brienne to ask something of her and Joffrey at their wedding. Like permission to go and find Arya or bring the Freys to justice or something like that, and the Tyrells will lead her to believe that this will be honoured but will turn on her at the wedding. Margaery will say to Joffrey to lock her up.

Their motive for doing this would be so that Jaime would leave and make sure that only the less attentive Kingsguard were still present. Jaime would follow after making inquiries and whatnot because he still feels indebted to Brienne and he would be away from the crime scene. This would show the darker side of the Tyrells and also that something was afoot.

    dogs,

    Greenjones:

I find the Brienne rationale very interesting….but I will be very disappointed if Jaime is not in the wedding ceremony/reception during the poisoning. The showrunners hurried up his return to KL for a reason, and not to just get thwarted by the Tyrells via some shifty scheme. He has got to witness his son’s death (with Cersei near)…that is the only reason why he is being brought back early, imho.

That conversation would be fun to witness…and definitely something new that wasn’t in the books. Jaime’s subsequent “seed” thoughts on the PW has always bothered me. I can’t help but think that either Cersei or Jaime will let something slip during the PW horrorshow that will cause folks to wonder about Cersei-Jaime even more.

Also, will there be J-C fucking over a corpse? I always thought that was the final straw between them and everything about their relationship was “poisoned” after that.

    Hodor’s Bastard,

If the PW ep. actually takes place entirely in King’s Landing just imagine all of the possible conversations and interactions it could provide us with. If we look back to Blackwater, we got see moments between the Hound and Bronn, between Davos and his son and small character moments that really fleshed things out. The possibilities of that episode (which I hope is called “Widow’s Wail”) are endless.

Interesting that you brought up Blackwater, which was another GRRM-scripted episode…
Imagine if you were GRRM. He gets to write a major episode with a major event and gets to revisit the events leading to the outcome from non-POV perspectives, with (as you said) endless possibilities for isolated conversations. That must have been so damn fun!

Good point. And since the audience is none the wiser, with regard to the the origin
of the dagger meant to murder Bran Stark, which Jaime deduces it belong to Joffrey
    ,
    this occasion would enlighten all.

That’s why I’ve always dreamt of a TV PW with a very mobile camera swifting from one group of conversation to another with delightful dialogues.

Imagine it… in the gardens, a big reception and a sequence-shot camera moving from Tyrells to Lannisters to whoever is present all having something to said about the current wedding !

This would be oh so fantastic !

Oh, I was totally thinking of your “cinematographical” comment from a few days back! With the RV, Jaime, Tyrion, Olenna and Dontos in the mix, it is mind-blowing how much backstabbing, exposition and jibjabbing can go on as the camera wanders around the room & garden.

Jentario, I agree. My thinking is the last three will also go along those lines.

Arthur and Joshua Atreides, I have little hope for Pompeii, even though the trailer doesn’t look half bad. Someone should a adapt a film from the book Pompeii by Robert Harris. It was an excellent read. Luckily Seventh Son is directed by Sergei Bodrov and in that Kit also thankfully doesn’t play a hero type. Building a career from scratch is all just stepping stones. He apparently auditioned for Reed Richards for a Fantastic Four remake as well, one that’s geared towards a younger audience the way they did with Spiderman, but it looks like he’ll be filming Spooks: The Greater Good next year, which I’m thankful for.

The best thing about Pompeii is he filmed it straight before season four started filming, which means he’ll be incredibly fighting fit in season four.

Until now the second episodes have been about continuing the world-building/introductions galore and since season 2, they’ve been about continuing the obligatory touching-base with every single character business. Thus far we have no hard evidence that ep. 2 will actually be entirely set at King’s Landing and revolve entirely around the PW.

If it is though that would mean two episodes like that in one season, which is pretty awesome. If ep. nine is indeed called “Castle Black” then that is as good as confirmation that all of it will take place there and revolve around the battle. If we get that and a whole PW episode, then this will truly be the best season of GoT.

After ep. nine, I doubt we’ll get a single-location episode again until the Battle of Meereen with all of those storylines converging and that’ll probably be Season 6.

    Arkash,

Should have been episode 10 of season 3 IMO. But since it’s already in season 4, I wanted it to be episode 4 or 3 at the earliest. There’s too much set up to fit in two episodes, and if you already delayed it make use of your delay and fill up the season a bit. Also, early bangs mean slow mid seasons.

    Arkash,

I don’t think there’s one person who didn’t see it coming in the books. It was more of a tease of how long it took and how it was going to happen. I knew full well Joffrey wouldn’t survive that wedding after two of Melisandre’s three got nicked off the list. I wonder when Balon will hit the dust…

By the way, I saw a rainbow last week. Dark blue, or Indigo, is clearly there. It is a necessary transitional color that leads to violet. Its the eye of Roy G Biv. Its there. Its not going away. So get over it.

Let’s debate about something meaningful like book Sansa vs show Sansa or if the next actor cast is too white.

Fuck, now I’m pissed. If you can’t tell the difference between dark blue and purple I am sure any four year old can show you. If you still cant , well I am sorry but there is no cure for color blindness. Try focusing your energy instead on removing a beautiful part of the spectrum but rather on gene/chromosome research.

Don’t know where to put this, but with regards to filming news from a while back, a guy I know from Northern Ireland said his family’s farm gave some goats for the filming of GoT, and he saw Brienne and Podrick filming a scene together, I believe he said they were skinning and/or eating a rabbit together. I know this pretty much confirms what we already know, that we’re getting into Feast for Crows territory in the next season, but I thought it was worth noting all the same.

…and now for something completely different…

It appears, and mind you these are just rumours for now, that AMC is looking at developing a pilot for “Preacher”, the DC/Vertigo, Garth Ennis/Steve Dillon graphic novel series. This was a project that back in 2008 HBO foolishly passed on, because they deemed it was “too violent and controversial” (?!?!?!?) even though Robert Rodriguez was supposedly attached as director had HBO taken on the project.

What made me take note, and feel nauseaous at the same time, was the fact that it appears that should AMC go ahead with “Preacher” as a series, Seth Rogen seems to be involved in its potential development…gaghhhhh—I just threw up in my mouth…

Anywho…here is the link to an article that tackles all this way better than my brainfart…
