Lena…because I love every moment that she is on screen.

Every nominee is worthy of this award. However, Lena is a perfect Cersei and does not get enough recognition for it.

I have to give it to Michelle, not only because she gave a truly amazing and entirely memorable performance this season, but also because she has been completely snubbed elsewhere and might not have this chance again (I doubt Stoneheart – if she even turns up in the series – will have much screentime or substantial material at all).

A heads-up for those who might be unaware: The most recent episode of South Park had a bit of a Game of Thrones theme, setting up Black Friday as a battle between the newly-released video game consoles on the market. Looks like it could be a two-part thing as well.

Why? I get that Emilia wasn’t great in Season 2 (at least some of which was due to trying to stretch a rather …lacking plot from ACoK over a season), but she was really good this season. It feels like people have these reflexive reactions to things, Emilia being a bad actress being one of them (despite her also being good in Season 1).

Maisie wins this one easily. She is just too flawless and her performances are so powerful. If TPTB who are running this show had put her name up for consideration at Emmy time, the show would have gotten two nominations in the supporting actress category and Maisie might have even taken the award home.

This is going to be a really difficult choice, so I’ll do per usual and work it out while I write.

It isn’t Lena. She kills it every year as Cersei, but she was stronger in Season 2 (had more material to work with) and I expect more in Season 4 as well. I do think her bits with Charles Dance were awesome, though, especially how she changes from the confident, all-known queen to a put-upon daughter.

Maisie did a lot of fine work as usual but I also don’t think this her year, either. Great stuff with Gendry and Hot Pie, but I think we get better stuff next year with her travels with the Hound.

Sophie’s great, and underrated given all the love for Maisie, and she had a number of great moments this year, particularly the entire “Second Sons” episode and Tyrion seeing her broken face in Mhysa after she’s found out that her brother and mother have been killed by the Lannisters, along with her crying jag as she sees the Mockingbird ship sail away, and the “Joffrey…Joffrey did that….he’s a monster.” She’s a very undervalued member of the cast.

If Michelle had been in the supporting category, I’d have checked that box easily and walked. Was she a lead actress in GoT this year? I count three truly memorable moments – one of course being the amazing Red Wedding, along with her “dreamcatcher” scene with Talisa, and her nice confessional to her uncle (his best human moment) in the third episode. Else, she has a scene where she and Robb discuss her not having seen her father, she’s part of the “war council” a couple of times, and that’s about it. If we’re going on one scene alone (well, half of a full episode), yes, the Red Wedding wins it for her. I just don’t know if her presence was felt strongly enough to truly warrant her getting this award.

So that leaves Emilia. I think she was great this year – great stuff all through Second Sons, the growing Targaryen arrogance you see as she confronts the emissary from Yunkai, her developing attraction to Daario, and of course all of the negotiations with Kraznys. Again, though, how much of that is her standing still looking steely? She admittedly does kick some ass in that, for sure, and the “drop the mic” moment is also pretty fantastic. And we saw some real growth in her as a leader as well, in her dealings with Selmy and Jorah.

Screw it. I’m going with Sophie, who doesn’t get enough love for the great work she does every year.

Hmm, hard to go against the two time defending winner in Maisie, especially after watching all of her scenes again on Youtube. I’m tempted to go with Michelle though as she had some pretty powerful stuff this past season.

I don’t really get it either. It might be partially backlash because she’s most promoted by the marketing and has gotten really famous from the role. She seems to really enjoy doing all the press junkets and going on the late night shows. She’s really good at giving interviews and seems to be born to be a celebrity. It’s not cool to like the most popular girl in school. That’s my theory anyway.

That being said, I voted for Michelle Fairley, but won’t get bent out of shape if Emilia Clarke wins the poll.

Lena. Hands down. She portrays Cersei beautifully and she doesn’t get the recognition she deserves. She always rocks it every season and not many people recognize that.
Michelle was really good, but I would have loved to see her more.
Emilia was great. She definitely grew this season.
Maisie is growing as an actor as well. She was good this season.
I don’t know why everyone is voting for Sophie. She was good, don’t get me wrong, but all she did this year was cry and whine.

They should make a best young actor category. I think Maisie and Sophie are great, but I don’t think they belong in the best actress category just yet. Don’t ask me why I think that, I just do.

Although Michelle Fairley and Lena Headey are terrific actresses with many years of experience – and though Sophie has done fine work, I don’t agree that she is on the same level with the aforementioned actresses – I have to give it to Maisie. The girl is a natural talent – she had a number of powerful performances this season that seemed almost effortless. And for those that argue that she isn’t particularly subtle, clearly the subtlety was so subtle that you missed it. ;)

And may I also direct you to the opening scene of the season finale. The look on her face as the Freys paraded her brother’s mutilated corpse was absolutely heart-wrenching…her expression and the pure devastation in her eyes alone is worthy of an Emmy, in my opinion.

I normally vote for Maisie in these, but I didn’t actually think she was as good this season. The one who really surprised me this season was actually Emilia. I couldn’t stand her in S2 but I thought she was brilliant this season, and the sacking of Astapor was by far the best scene of the season.

I do think Michelle is going to win, though, and I am absolutely fine with that.

I thought Emilia really shone this year (not last year though, lol). She totally rocked that nude seduction of Daario moment. That, and her negotiations with Krasnyz and subsequent ‘unmasking’ to him, I think won my vote for her this year.

The criticism of Emilia Clarke is completely unjust – she had much better material to work with in Season 3 and she embraced it and completely convinced in the role.

However I’m going for Sophie Turner – there is no point where I don’t completely believe her as a character. I never think about her acting, which in a way is the greatest complement.

  62. OldeCrone
    Posted November 19, 2013 at 3:26 am | Permalink

All very good (in my opinion) but I voted for Michelle – it’s probably her last chance to win. I don’t dislike the Sansa character the way some folk do – in fact I feel sorry for her. I was naive when I was her age (I went to a Convent School so that probably didn’t help – though I didn’t believe in romances like her but I did try to see the best in people). I wouldn’t be surprised if Maisie wins as she seems a firm fan favourite. She is a good actress – she’s had some humdingers of scenes which maybe other young “mummers” haven’t and has acted against some very strong older actors and she will have other chances to win.
Off-topic, there is a new film doing the rounds “Philomena” in which Michelle Fairley plays an editor and seemingly not a very sympathetic character. I’ve only seen trailers – Steve Coogan and Judy Dench are the main actors (don’t know how well they are known on the other side of the Atlantic; JD may be known) – it’s on a theme that’s been treated before; where a child was taken from a young unmarried mother and given for adoption in the days when the mother had no say in the matter and then the mother tries to trace the child many years later. Some UK films translate well to the New World, some don’t. It’s on my “to see” list. Cinemas are thieves in the UK but some occasionally let old codgers in for a reduced price so I’m sleuthing to find a cheap showing of the film.

  63. SourPuss

I liked all their performances but I chose Sophie as well, she’s so convincing for me even though she has the most subtle part of all of them. She never gets to act ‘kickass’ and crowd pleasing, and they don’t give her the sassy lines, yet she pulls you into the story with her acting, the heartbreak on her face after the RW, ah Jesus even the stoniest heart would crack.

  64. vlad
    Posted November 19, 2013 at 4:58 am | Permalink

No doubt in my mind: Michelle Fairley. They didn’t really give her that much material, but looking at the others on the list, they didn’t really shine this season. Dany had some strong moments, but not enough

  65. Eve
    Posted November 19, 2013 at 5:10 am | Permalink

Maisie – the girl is good, but her scene with the Hound when she talks about how his brother burned his face was very cringe-worthy on her part and her scream “burn in hell” (the cliche line didn’t help) when the Hound survived the fight made me laugh instead of making me want to hug her. What I did like was her last scene where she killed the Frey guy.

Emilia – I think she’s pretty great. I don’t like the character, but I don’t think the actress is awful, like others do. My only complaint is the constant move of her eyebrows in a very dramatic manner. It’s a bit distracting and it does get me out of the moment sometimes, but it’s not that bad. Favorite scene – the conversation with the 3 mercenaries. Her facial expressions were gold.

Sophie- IMO she’s amazing. Crying can take its toll on actors since they have to remember or imagine something horrible so they could truly look in pain. Now add the cameras, the 20 people surrounding you, waiting for you to mess up or telling you to hurry so they could eat lunch and the strong possibility of repeating everything at least 10 times so they could get the scene from all the angles and then tell me it’s an easy task. And since Sophie has to do this in at least 50% of her scenes I think it takes some talent to pull it off as well as she does, don’t you think? My favorite scene with her was the LF one in “Kissed by fire”. You can see she’s having a hard time lying to “the most dangerous man in Westeros” and she’s constantly on the verge of giving up and telling the truth, but when he leaves, she sighs in wary relief, worried about what might happen if he finds the truth. Those subtle moments are what makes her great.

However, I think it’s a tie between Michelle and Lena here. Michelle’s cry of horror at the RW and Lena’s face when she sees Jaime again are absolutely heartbreaking. To express so much with so little takes a lot of talent and these ladies have it.

  66. Ludo

    Sophie Turner.

She is an amazing and very subtle actress. Her role is also a lot more difficult to play than Arya. I really enjoyed her work in the whole season.

The smile she does when Margaery tells her that she is going to marry Loras in episode 4 was priceless. It was just perfect.

Sophie all the way. And NO, she is not “just crying”.

I went with Sophie Turner. She’s amazing as Sansa and does the best with what she’s given. Michelle Fairley was incredible but lacked screentime. These two mainly lacked screentime and good writing to just explode.
Maisie and Emilia are great, but I feel that they’re helped a lot by how the writers like their characters more than they do the others…
As for Lena Headey, I’m waiting for season 4 to be her breakthrough moment with the scènes coming up for Cersei…

It’s a brilliant movie by the way. Beautifully shot, incredible acting, excellent story and the best soundtrack of the year easily. I can’t praise it enough. I hope that the Academy recognizes it’s brilliance and gives it some much deserved prices. The competition will have to be really good to beat them if the Academy just looks at the qualities of the movie (I know they don’t often do that, but let’s hope they do that this year).

Maisie was in some of my favourite scenes and had several great moments (she was brilliant during the Hound vs Beric, her scene with gendry, her scenes with the Hound, her reactions during the red wedding and her scene in the last episode were all fantasic).

So I think its pretty obvious that im voting for Maisie (who has actually recently won the Radio 1 Teen award for Best British Actor/Actress)

I love that those “I know Michelle is gonna win but I am voting for…” comments almost outweigh actual Michelle votes. For me, picking her is a no-brainer. She owned the scarce material she had this season and rocked her big moment. Not to mention it was Catelyn Stark’s last season. Sophie (who was my runner up), Maisie (who played a part in my loss of love for Arya), Lena and Emilia will have their chances in the future

  91. She-Wolf
    Posted November 19, 2013 at 2:04 pm | Permalink

    Rygar,

Sophie. Because she is better than Maisie. Plays a more subtle role. I’m not saying it’s easy to play the vengeful rebel type, but Sophie seems to do so much more with so little.

I don’t understand why so many are putting Maisie and Arya down in order to prop up Sophie and Sansa. This is especially strange since Maisie isn’t even Sophie’s only competition here. There are other actresses involved. But regardless, Sophie is a talented enough actress that she shouldn’t need her friend and co-worker to be diminished just so she can look better. Why not concentrate on her virtues instead of comparing her to another?

In my opinion, Maisie has an incredible acting range. She can deftly and subtly tell the story of her character with just the look on her face. She doesn’t need to shout and sob to convey emotion. It all comes through her eyes, the tiny changes in expression, and her expert acting choices. Just look at the scenes where she portrays Arya telling Gendry she can be his family, when she’s looking at the Twins knowing her family is so close yet so far, when she sees the Winterfell men and thinks she has finally made it only to see them slaughtered, or when she sees Robb’s desecrated corpse. Maisie conveyed the layered emotions of her character not with wild theatrics but with an understated yet powerful performance. She also managed to show her range with other scenes that did require more aggressiveness, proving that she is an actress who can alter her delivery and handle a diverse range of material. This is essential for the role she is playing.

Maisie isn’t just playing a vengeful rebel type. She is playing a lost young girl who has been exposed to the worst in humanity, who lost her family and friends, who is trying to find home again, whose horrific experiences are unfortunately molding her into a child solider. Arya isn’t just a “type.” She is a complex and fully realized character. And Maisie portrays her deftly with subtlety, charisma, and presence.

That’s why I’m voting for Maisie. Not because I can put the other actresses down to make her look better, but because her own skills are impressive and deserving of recognition.

Sophie!!! They are all exceptional actresses in their roles but I think Sansa is a difficult role to pull off because of the subtleties and think Sophie has done a fantastic job with the scenes she’s been given. The look of joy on her face when she thought she was going to marry Loras was heartbreaking (because I knew what was really going to happen), as was the despair after she found out about the RW.

    Rygar,

Root for who you will. Sophie is talented and beautiful. She has a definite chance in this. My point had nothing to do with who you voted for. I was discussing the means in which many Sophie/Sansa fans like to put Maisie/Arya down (“Because she is better than Maisie.” and “vengeful rebel type”) in order to prop up their favorite. Complimenting Sophie shouldn’t be about that. And it’s still odd that Maisie/Arya is the one singled out when there are other competitors in the poll.

I have no idea what you mean by that butt comment and I likely don’t want to know.

    - He used to live in America when he was a kid and speaks English with an American accent
    - For the show he has been trying to get rid of his American accent because on the show everyone’s accents are from the north of England
    - This is something he has been working on and he has a ‘dialect coach’ as the accent is hard
    - After he was contacted he had to keep quiet about it and flew to London, where he went into a room with six people in it
    - There they all talked about the role and spent some time bouncing ideas off each other
    - His hosts ended the meeting as they had another one afterwards, he wasn’t feeling so optimistic but then they said to him ‘don’t call us, we’ll call you’
    - Details of the role and any images are being kept secret, all he can say at the moment is that the character is grave, merciless and has no ears
    - Lots of moving around with a hectic schedule, different countries, different days, different weeks, different episodes, different directors
    - They run a tight ship as regards information getting out into the public domain and what he can and can’t say
    - He sat on the Iron Throne and it isn’t as big as it looks
    - Winter is coming

As every year, Emilia and Maisie had the best material to play with, so they always have a head start on the others. From those two, I think Maisie is the better actress, although it is difficult to say since the character she plays is so close to her own personality. Hence, despite the less interesting characters, for best actress I look elsewhere. Lena didn’t have that much to do (season 2 was hers), and Sophie’s character development (and acting opportunities) went backwards from her great season 2. Michelle also had not that much to do, but when it was her time to shine, she acted the hell out of that pivotal scene. So yeah, once again I find myself voting for Michelle!

She-Wolf: Just look at the scenes where she portrays Arya telling Gendry she can be his family,

Well, opinions differ, for me that side of Maisie’s acting is the weakest. She’s great in many ways, and there couldn’t be a better actress to play Arya, but in my opinion she’s not that good at conveying the delicate emotional parts. I didn’t like that line you mention about being Gendry’s family, and neither the one where she asked Beric if he could revive someone that was beheaded. I know many people were very moved by those lines, but for me personally it didn’t really work. And based on that I’d say that Sophie has a better acting range. That’s just my opinion based on my own preferences, and I don’t see why we should not say such things on a message board that is created to discuss the show…

Sorry but Emilia is certainly the most overated actress in the show while she’s the weakest. The fact that her character is popular and she’s putting in value by HBO don’t give her more talent. She has the best material to work with (like Maisie) and her scenes are great above all thanks to the way they’re filming.

My vote to Michelle who give us the best feelings in the whole serie.

    queenofthorns,

Nope, I wasn’t kidding. On Tower of the Hand, Arya (#3) and Daenerys (#6) are by far the most popular female characters of ASOIAF (with Brienne on 17, Sansa on 18, Cersei on 24, and Catelyn on 28). This is a vote based on the books before GOT aired, so it is a fair indication of which characters are the most popular, loose from the acting performances of the tv series. That’s why in my opinion Maisie and Emilia have a head start when it comes to popularity votes, which “awards” like these always turn out to be…

I’m one of the people who thought it worked very well and I’m curious why we have such opposite reactions. Was her performance not subtle enough or something? It also kind of sounded like you were criticizing the writing, although in context most people (presumably including you) have been emphasizing what an actor does with the material. Both the writing and performance could be disappointing, of course.

Michelle, of course. She deserves and she has been horribly underrated. Not only this season or on this series but throughout her career. I hope Winds of Winter has a lot lot of our Mother Merciless. I want her to survive Winds and get to Dream. I know she tried to kill Pod, but I still can’t help but love her. That’s GRRM’s cruelty. He makes us crave for vengeance and then gives it and then makes us regret it – I think I said that before, somewhere. I also hope she has much more material because, well, more LS = more MF. And more MF is always welcome. It’s the same thing when Tywin dies, I will be really really sad to see Dance go.
I’m still mad at the guys who submitted the names for the Emmys – where’s Maisie and Sophie, goddamnit? I’m not sure but I think they never submitted these girls’ names. Nor Isaac’s.
And I’m still mad at the Emmys for not nominating Nikolaj and Michelle. Emilia and Peter deserve all the credit in the world, I think, but c’mon. It gets even worse when you see the some other guys from other shows who were nominated and you realize they’re not even close to them both. I suspect arse-licking.
Kit got amazingly better this season, I wanted him to know that, he’s really getting Jon. Alfie was amazing. People always seem to forget Alfie.

I haven’t seen David Morrissey in “The Walking Dead” so I can’t really comment as to his acting ability in that series. He has done worthwhile work in his native UK, on TV, in films and in the theatre (he’s worked for both “The National Theatre” and “The Royal Shakespeare Company” which are institutions which can pick from the cream of the crop). I was listening to something on the radio recently where he played a P.I. which I enjoyed. He was playing a north of England character so obviously – as he hails from Liverpool – he was using a British accent. As a British person it’s hard for me to tell if a non-American faking American speech lets his/her natural accent slip through.

Ok, off topic but I’ve been thinking about this for a few days now. concerns upcoming casting on GOT.

major spoilers for a different TV series coming up. I will use spoiler tags so you’ve been warned.

Now that Clay Morrow is finally dead on SOA, what upcoming role do you think Ron Perlman can/will be cast as? because I’m convinced they’re going to fit him in somewhere, and were just waiting until he was uncommitted to something else.

    queenofthorns,

Nope, I wasn’t kidding. On Tower of the Hand, Arya (#3) and Daenerys (#6) are by far the most popular female characters of ASOIAF (with Brienne on 17, Sansa on 18, Cersei on 24, and Catelyn on 28). This is a vote based on the books before GOT aired, so it is a fair indication of which characters are the most popular, loose from the acting performances of the tv series. That’s why in my opinion Maisie and Emilia have a head start when it comes to popularity votes, which “awards” like these always turn out to be…

Lol, actually it’s not. ADWD only came out after the first season of GoT aired. The wide spread Dany-hate only appeared after ADWD and the 50 shades of Daario chapters. If they were to do a poll now amongst bookreaders Dany would be a lot lower (unjustly imo).

Turncloak: I hope you don’t mean David Morresey from the walking dead. He’s been awful. Not menacing in the least bit and quite frankly doesn’t have the chops to play. Actually I don’t think I would take any actor from that series.

What’s the deal with The Walking Dead?

Huh, Hodor (I think you expected that). Now, seriously, I think he looks a bit like Victarion. But why on all seven hells you’re convinced they’re going to fit him in? I don’t think he is going to be cast.
By the way, Victarion will be played by Ray Stevenson. It is fucking known. When the time is come, Ray will be kidnapped by some of us fans and taken to the HBO headquarters. Just as Kevin McKidd will be for JonCon. Ray and Kevin are in the same situation Sean Bean was before Season 1, maybe worse, and look what happened. It IS going to happen. Or not.

This was another one of those hard ones. I loved Dany’s continued transformation as well as the epic ass kicking she inflicts on those windbags in Astapor…plus did I mention she has awesome dragons and cool as hell warriors…Grey Worm for President in 2016!!!!!

Lena was her good usual self as Cercei’s decay further continues, and Sophie made Sansa’ ever so subtle transition from victim to adept student of the game of thrones ever so fascinating to watch. Arya is Arya, and Maysie continues to be a fan favourite…a stalwart presence on the show.

But….Michelle Fairley’s performance was just stellar, not that it was anything but during the previous seasons, but this year it just became that much more amplified. from the interaction with the Blackfish, Edmure, the pain of loosing her father, loosing Winterfell, having her children scattered all over Westeros, her brutally honest confessional while talking to Talisa and of course all leading and culminating in the Red Wedding…need I say more! That blood curdling scream, or wail, at the end crushed my heart. I would give every award to her just for that scream! It was soo deep and you can see Cat and all her desperation, fear, pain and everything else in that heartbreaking sound at the end…you can also see the level of talent and dedication Michelle has!

So, that is my long winded way of saying that my vote goes to Michelle!

Michelle. Why she did not win an Emmy is beyond my understanding. As a mother I felt her pain and sorrow in the RW scene, and this season she was fantastic in all her scenes.

This is kinda off topic, but I sure hope Ron Perlman is cast in GOT. I think he is a terrific actor and he would be a great addition to the cast. Victarion, Captain Harlaw, or Jon Connington would be some suggestions. lol Someone mentioned Victarion and it brought Ron to mind.

Went with Maisie, though I can get behind a Michelle win.
Maisie simply broke my heart multiple times this season. This young lady is just so amazing to watch. I have to give props to the other young actress, Sophie Turner, who every season shows us a subtle Sansa. She isn’t a flashy character but her vulnerability makes her so engaging.

    The Flayed Man,

I hope what you doesn’t come true, cause I am looking forward to how the entire cast and crew would envision that being played out. Farley has always been one of my favorite, annoying, under appreciated actresses in this series.
