That’s a wrap! Season 4 filming is complete

Annnnnnd… CUT! Filming on season 4 of Game of Thrones has officially wrapped, according to behind the scenes writer Cat Taylor.

The season 4 shoot lasted for 136 days and spanned three countries: Iceland, Croatia and Northern Ireland. The next season is expected to debut in spring 2014, exact date to be announced.

Winter Is Coming: And so begins the wait for our first glimpse at season 4 in a trailer or behind-the-scenes video. My guess is we won’t see anything until the new year.

  • My guess is we won’t see anything until the new year.

We’ll probably at least get a glimpse of S4 in the Yearender video. They released it at the beginning of December last year.. so I guess we should get this very soon.

  • According to the Game of Thrones Youtube page, the first teaser was uploaded on November 18th last year, and the first “In Production” video was uploaded on December 2nd.

  • You would think we would get a teaser this Sunday. No actual footage, but a voiceover and a graphic promoting the new season, and hopefully a premier date.

  • First teasers for Season 2 & 3 aired right before the finale of Boardwalk Empire, which ends on Sunday. So don’t be suprised if we get a teaser

  • Yeah, a teaser this Sunday wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility. It won’t have any footage though.

I forgot the In Production featurette was released in Dec of last year though. We may get something like that again before the year is out. Of course, that wouldn’t technically contain footage either, but at least we’d get to see some of the new sets, locations, and costumes.

  • Hey what happened to the count down clock we had last year on the website? Are you still planning on putting it up at some point?

  • Don’t Care:
    Hodor’s Bastard,
Where did you get that from?

It’s just my personal conjecture and assumption. Once the scenes are shot, the composer gets the master tape/mpv copies and starts scoring the scenes. Heck, he’s probably already started recording by now. The guy works fast.

  • Cue all the marketing/trailer/behind the scenes video analysis! Gonna be so much fun in the coming months! After last season, the show is truly back on form and I’m as hyped as ever for S4…

  • arden:
Where the fuck is my trailer

If you live in the midwest, those darn tornados toss those double-wides around like match sticks. You may want to check the next county.

  • I believe this season will debut in April rather than March because of major post production. Also, last year we got nice shoot photos in early December- hopefully that will happen again.

  • Guess it’s time to finally give up on Val/Dalla? And on seeing other Greyjoys this year. Bummer.

Nevertheless, excited to see a trailer. Hopefully in January a teaser of some kind?

  • Not that this is even remotely relevant but is anyone watching the Game of Thrones spoof on South Park? It’s frickin’ hysterical xD

  • GG,

The weiner stuff doesn’t make much sense if they are strictly referring to the show, but everything else is pretty funny.

  • Tyrion Pimpslap,

Yeah, saying GoT is overflown with penises is inaccurate. Otherwise I really liked the two episodes (could there be a third follow up?), especially the console war business.

  • I think first teaser/trailer in early January with the premiers of True Detective and Girls. This Sunday they are showing the first trailer for season three of Girls. They don’t do early trailers unless it’s a new show in general it seems.

  • It’s always so agonizing waiting for the trailers and other promotional materials. Once we start getting those the wait feels so much shorter.

I’m already sick of Christmas and it isn’t thanksgiving yet. I need sex and violence to warm my cold heart.

  • I was actually doing extra work on it today. It was very cool to be in on the last day. Can’t wait to see the scene I worked on. Going to be awesome!

  • Jentario,

I was only disappointed at how bad the George voice impression was. I know the pre-show disclaimer, but as a 19-year old Englishman who can do a surprisingly-accurate one, it just feels downright lazy.

Back on the subject though, it’s surprising that as the series progresses further and further into Autumn and towards Winter (as was mentioned in the first episode of season 2) that they continue to do the majority of the filming when the weather’s fine and all the leaves are still on the trees. Maybe it just doesn’t matter, no point in complaining really, I’m sure this will be the best 10-week run yet.

  • Tyrion Pimpslap,

Yeah that was kinda going over my head too. But it’s 3 parter so I assume it’s some sort of long joke that’ll pay off in the end. I mean, unless they’re saying Butters is subconsciously gay or something(which is a possibility).

  • I actually know someone who works for Time Warner in the HBO division and for what it’s worth he is under the impression season 4 is going to start on April 6, 2014, possibly even as late as April 13, 2014.

Reason he gave is the Girls TV show. First 2 seasons of that show only had 10 episodes, forthcoming 3rd season will have 12 and they are both Sunday 9 PM shows.

  • And so begins the hard part :( Think its about time I begin my rewatch through all 30 episodes within the next week or two. Best way to pass the time until the trailers and production vids start to appear!

  • Rimshot:
I was actually doing extra work on it today. It was very cool to be in on the last day. Can’t wait to see the scene I worked on. Going to be awesome!

Can you give us some teasing !

Without spoiling anything or violating any discretion chart, is there any bone you can throw at us ?

  • And so begins the whining about wanting a trailer now now NOW!!! And if we don’t get a trailer, it must mean ths season is going to suck. (And yes this was something people said last year)

I thing we got about 1 minute of new scenes for the last season of Breaking Bad and I still say less complaining than people here you cried about not getting a trailer 50 days beige the premier.

I so hope HBO doesn’t show us a thing. Band I promise they will still get the ratings. (See the ratings for Breaking Bad)

  • Doug,

That’s strange. Girls started out at 10:30 after Game of Thrones. It only really aired at 9 in January because Luck got cancelled and they needed something to fill time. I would have thought Girls would go back to 10 now that HBO has True Detective.

  • Lisa:

Are you kidding? You should have seen the complaints from people having to watch 10 minutes of low winter sun to see the next episode preview.

  • I really hope the trailer appears first on Jimmy Kimmel again x). Loved the bitching last year about that

  • Doug:
I actually know someone who works for Time Warner in the HBO division and for what it’s worth he is under the impression season 4 is going to start on April 6, 2014, possibly even as late as April 13, 2014.

I thought it was confirmed to be March 30aargh………
It makes sense to be in April, since the whole merchandising for Series 3 featured 03.31.2013 – a lot of 3s.
    This series it would be 04.06.2014 or 04.13.2014 – a lot of 4s. And Series 5 04.05.2015.
There is also Memorial Day in the US. If the airing date is the 4th the holiday would be between the 7th and 8th episodes.
If the airing date is the 13th the holiday would be between the 6th and 7th.
If the airing date is the 30th the holiday would be between the 8th and 9th, like last year… I mean THIS year.
I think they could do that again. I don’t understand much about TV, but I guess these gaps disencourage casual viewers a bit. Or not. And people already know GoT’s ninth episode is THE episode, so the show would lose less viewers if the gap was between episodes 8 and 9 than between episodes 7 and 8.

  • Am I mistaken or was there at least one scene, last year, shot after Filming was complete? In California, where bears go…

  • sunspear,

Yeah, it’s entirely possible I’m wrong on the scheduled time it will air. 9 PM 10:30 PM, etc. The overall important factor that he stressed to me was the added 2 episodes of Girls being the main reason for a delayed start.

  • Rimshot:
I was actually doing extra work on it today. It was very cool to be in on the last day. Can’t wait to see the scene I worked on. Going to be awesome!

Congratulations, sir. You just got me drooling.

  • Doug,

Girls is at 10 this year and they are doing two episodes on premier night and then the new show Looking will take the 10.30 slot for eight episodes. They could very well do a two episode finale so that brings back the Girls weeks to ten or eleven if they don’t.

  • Doug,

So what is the debut date for Girls? Will it run 12 weeks? Confused. ( that would put it to around the end of March.)

  • Too bad we won’t see the any of the new Greyjoy characters. Does it mean, that we are going to see Balon’s fall in the end of season four, or at the beginning of season five?

  • utherwolf:
Too bad we won’t see the any of the new Greyjoy characters. Does it mean, that we are going to see Balon’s fall in the end of season four, or at the beginning of season five?

That scene and subsequent activity in S3 has bothered me. The order in which Stannis names the “false kings” while burning the leeches in the book (Robb, Balon, Joff) is opposite to the order in the show (Joff, Balon, Robb). And Stannis hesitated with Robb’s name in the show (weird…almost as if he had second thoughts). I thought GRRM adhered to the death order in the book (although Balon could have happened earlier than Robb, I suppose, since no PoV). I always thought order mattered with that scene in the book (Balon should be next!)…but with the show, all bets are off.

  • Jentario,

My bet is March 16, unless HBO airs a special after True Detective’s 1st season which premieres January 12. If you add one week for Super Bowl Sunday (no TD that week), the finale would be on March 9.

  • Family, Duty, Hodor: I don’t know if you guys know about this, but it seems likely that Telltale will be making a Game of Thrones game:

    http://uk.ign.com/articles/2013/11/21/telltale-is-developing-a-game-of-thrones-game

They’re a very respected developer (although I’ve not played their games yet).

Yes my guess is that they game will follow GRRMs POV structure since Taletell used that method in their last Walking Dead DLC. I actually find the game by Taletell superior to the series

  • So Morocco was officially out?

What decisions led to going back to Iceland, even for scenes not involving the Night’s Watch? (we have confirmed reports that Maisie Williams was filming Arya scenes there). Good locations you randomly discovered? Cheap filming fees due to the recession in Iceland? A little of both?

Also, last year they expanded to a third, “Raven” production unit but didn’t this year. Would have been funny if they explained away the loss of Raven unit by pretending it was wiped out in a mass Red Wedding-style betrayal.

Wait, if Dragon Unit went to Morocco and Raven Unit was in Iceland, wouldn’t Dragon unit be the one that gets removed because they’re not in Morroco anymore? Don’t know how that works.

  • Hodor’s Bastard,

In the books the order was Joffrey,Balon, and Robb. Balon died first,Robb second, and Joffrey last. The order in the show was Robb,Balon, and Joffrey. So it is possible that the order they were named doesn’t directly correspond with the order of their deaths, at least if they followed the books. But that raises the question of why change the order in the show? In the books he hesitated before naming Robb. In the show he lead off with Robb and gave no pause in saying his name. I still think they’ll have Balon die later in season 4, but they could mean to have them die in the order they were named.

  • Turncloak,

Yeah, that would make a lot of sense. I’ve managed to dig up an interesting quote from a Telltale founder back in February.

RPS: Going back to something you said earlier, you mentioned Game of Thrones. I was thinking about this not too long ago, like, “If Telltale did a Game of Thrones game, it’d basically be a perfect fit.” It seems like it would fit the character-driven format you follow. Is that something you guys would like to do, if the opportunity presented itself?

Dan Connors: Yeah. I think we’d like to do that. It has a lot of what we need in a franchise, for sure. The intrigue, the threat, that looming threat that can be called in on you at any time. Or someone you love, similarly. It’s a dangerous world, basically, and a haywire, chaotic world with a lot of group dynamics. That’s super interesting.

If they do end up doing it, I hope they base it on Robert’s rebellion. That would be a breath of fresh air whilst still having the potential for great character interactions.

  • Family, Duty, Hodor,

Very interesting. Those are the guys who work on “The Walking Dead” (season 2) and “The Wolf Among Us”. I could see a episodic, narrative format (like in TWD and TWAU) work in a Game of Thrones game.

  • I am predicting a teaser (Like the S2 “The Night is Dark and Full of Terrors” teaser) before the Boardwalk Empire Finale. They could put it in front of the Treme premiere, but that would make very little sense, in my opinion, as BE has 4x the number of viewers. I then wouldn’t expect a trailer until late February-early March.

As for the air date I was predicting it to be on the 30th of March. However, I was not aware that girls has an extended season (as I have no interest in that show whatsoever), so I guess the 6th or 13th of April is very possible. Although I want S4 as soon as possible, I would actually prefer the break to be between episode 6 and 7 or 7 and 8 instead of being between 8 and 9.

  • I know I have mentioned this before, but since you guys have brought up gaming, is the existing GoT game for PS3 and Box worth a crap?

  • Ser Tahu,

Not seeing S4 until April and no teasers until January. But we will see – do folks remember the raven flying over modern cities that made everyone so irritated?

  • Patchy Face:
    Ser Tahu,

Not seeing S4 until April and no teasers until January. But we will see – do folks remember the raven flying over modern cities that made everyone so irritated?

Yeah, that caused quite a stir. Does anybody remember if it was the teaser or if it was in lieu of a real trailer?

  • Cary Storm:
Am I mistaken or was there at least one scene, last year, shot after Filming was complete? In California, where bears go…

Yes. But you were my source for that

  • Mirri Maz,

Girls could end a week earlier. It premiers with two episodes so I am guessing it could close with two episodes. The show it’s paired with is only 8 episodes.

  • So the wildling general has filmed and is also coming back next year? Maybe then he will be one of the wildlings who will survive the battle and be used to interact with Jon and co later when he finally allows them through the Wall, etc.

  • Man, I can’t believe Season FOUR is already finished filming. SEASON FOUR! It feels like just yesterday they were filming Season 1… time flies way too fast. Poor GRRM must be freaking out.

  • OT: Apparently Walder Frey (David Bradley) has decided to be a a space Admiral for a change. He is going to give his voice to Lord High Admiral Suvarov in The Mandate, a singleplayer sci-fi RPG with optional co-op. It as a Kickstarter going on right now and looks AWESOME!
If you only remotely care for those kind of games, go check out their kickstarter page and watch the trailer, Bradly sounds great in it.
The lowest tier that includes the game will only cost you 20 bucks. To me the one for 40 bucks seams to have the best value, but there are many others to chose from.

  • I hope one day they will retutn to Malta, or wherever season 1 KL was filmed. Dubrovnik is quickly getting boring.

  • Tyrion Pimpslap:
    GG,

The weiner stuff doesn’t make much sense if they are strictly referring to the show, but everything else is pretty funny.

The “wieners everywhere!” aspect of the jokes is just silliness (and/or a representation of how Butters views things), but one aspect of their critique is pretty spot-on: the “wieners” of the show are never erect, even if you see one immediately after a sexual act (e.g. Theon and Ros in season 1).

  • I hope they have the premiere in April again and not on March 30 so it won’t have to go up against the Walking Dead season finale again. I don’t even like the Walking Dead but the shows ratings are enormous, biggest in cable history, and I would prefer when Game of Thrones has it’s premiere that it is the biggest most buzzed about thing on TV that day but it won’t be if the Walking Dead is also airing.

  • TheBerylfly,
Yep. No Euron (which in turn means that Balon’s death likely won’t be until very late in the season), no Victarion and no Val/Dalla this season.

  • I imagine some actors CVs haven’t been updated yet to mention their GoT roles. But these would be smaller roles.

  • loki:
I hope one day they will retutn to Malta, or wherever season 1 KL was filmed. Dubrovnik is quickly getting boring.

Maltese government said no more filming in Malta. Apparently they were upset about something to do with the filming in S1, can’t remember what exactly. Think it might have been to do with alleged damage to the world heritage-listed old town of Valetta?

But seriously, how is Dubrovnik boring?

  • Ser Tahu:
    TheBerylfly,
Yep. No Euron (which in turn means that Balon’s death likely won’t be until very late in the season), no Victarion and no Val/Dalla this season.

I don’t think a lack of Euron being cast in S4 will have any bearing whatsoever with when Balon’s death occurs. Most likely, I think it will be in the order of the Leeches.

They can do other things to imply that an assassin hired by an Ironborn was behind Balon’s death.

  • Chickenduck,
It changes a lot of things: It was rather important that Euron burst in and crowned himself just after Balon’s death, as it directly implicated him in the death. Also, it was important that he crowned himself so quickly, if he was still a few days off then Victarion would have crowned himself.

As for the leeches, the order of the leeches and the order of the deaths were not the same in the books, and I think it was a very deliberate choice on the part of GRRM to make it happen that way: it leaves it open to the reader to decide whether they believe it was because of the leeches or not. To have the deaths in the same order as the leeches in the show changes that.

  • Ser Tahu,

How I picture it playing out (and how I think they should have ended S3, mind you) would be the Hound asking Arya who this “real killer” she knew was. Then Arya would relate to him about Jaqen.

Her dialogue would continue over a scene set at a different location with Jaqen (in his first face so the audience would get it immediately), approaching a certain someone on a certain swaying bridge. Followed by maybe a “valar morghulis” and then a tumble.

(I don’t know how to do spoiler marks so I kept this vague)

  • The season 4 shoot lasted for 136 days and spanned three countries

How many days of shooting were there in the other 3 seasons?

  • Ser Tahu,

So in the show, Balon will actually be the last “usurper” to die? Man, that’s somewhat amusing
I guess they could show him falling over and maybe a glimpse of someone’s face, and then mention his brother returned and seized the throne… dunno if it will be more or less confusing to casual viewers, though

Oh well, here is to another year of worrying whether Victarion will be cut

  • TheBerylfly,
They could technically have it off-screen, but Euron bursting into the throne room at Pyke, crowning himself and drowning anyone who objects would make such a great visual, and it would be a huge mistake on the part of D&D to pass on that opportunity.

  • jentario,
Yeah, I kind of picked up on that afterwards (I’m really tired, so my brain isn’t functioning as quickly as normal).

Just for the record, I think that scene will be in the S5 premiere (with Balon’s death in the S4 finale). loki, give one good reason why that scene shouldn’t be in the show as the introduction to Euron :P.

  • Greenjones:

Nah, Jaqen wouldn’t have been that person. Only one person in the story so far has had something to gain from Balon “falling” off the bridge: Euron. He was behind it somehow, maybe even with a little help from his new god, Rhllor…

But as far as Jaqen is concerned, I still hold out hope that he and Syrio are the same. Don’t they both call Arya “boy”, or is that some Bravossi thing? Although, I don’t remember anyone in Bravos calling Arya that when she ends up there. Hopefully, we’ll see that too this season.

  • Lex,

No GRRM is loving life right now. Just look at him. Oh and his Giants are starting to win. There is no way he is concerned. Besides, the show is theirs and the books are his after all.

  • They may kill off Balon towards the start of the season and follow Yara for the rest of it. Then at the start of next season, she returns home and discovers… Euron on the throne.

  • Lef:
    Ser Tahu,

The leeches had nothing to do with the deaths of the 3 kings. Joffrey’s fate was sealed since ACOK.

Correct. The leeches were just a ploy to give us ladies another glimpse of Gendrys abs.

  • Well congratulations once again for wrapping up yet another season! Never get tired of that…in fact I still have to pinch myself when we talk about another GoT season in the can! And yes I still keep my fingers crossed we get a full series run…learned long ago not to take anything for granted!

As for a teaser I would guess some clip or small hint would not be out of the realm of possibility during the season finale of “Boardwalk Empire “…we’ll just have to wait and see…

  • Ser Tahu:
Just for the record, I think that scene will be in the S5 premiere (with Balon’s death in the S4 finale). loki, give one good reason why that scene shouldn’t be in the show as the introduction to Euron :P.

because the kingsmoot scene is too cool to cut it?

  • I’m so excited, I just watched the December 2nd “In Production” video and it’s great, it gives better inside into the upcoming material more than most trailers, and Benioff’s cheekbones are looking HD
So I hope we get one of those

Also, but Eurrrooon :( I really thought we’d get him with the gap created by the Red Wedding and the Iron Islands being built up in the season finale

  • Roekest,

Rh’llor was Victarion’s new god not Euron’s, and the Ghost of High Heart gives a prophecy in aSoS that talks about a man without a face with a drowned crow on his shoulder waiting for a man on a swaying bridge, indicating a faceless man, hired by Euron, killed Balon

  • Family, Duty, Hodor,

Anyway, I’m not saying they ruin every goddamn game they make, but if you were a Harry Potter fan you’d be just as apprehensive as I if they got to make GoT. The only good HP games are the Lego ones, and they were made by Telltale.

  • And now commences the worst of the three off-seasons for WIC, and GoT fans in general.

    Four seasons, as follows:

On-season: The show is running. Glorious, as always. (April-June).

Post-Season: It’s the afterglow period, when we wait for Emmy nominations, discuss last episodes, hear from interviewees, bask in the announcement of the renewal (I know, it comes during the season, but still), and wait for casting announcements. (June-August)

Filming Season: We go back and forth tweeting pics that some of you intrepid folk have gotten out of Iceland and Croatia, speculate on the most minor castings (Pixie Le Knot is playing Strong Belwas?! Awesome!), chat about plot points, revel in posts about the filming, and applaud all pics of Lena Headey doing, well, anything, vote on the WIC.Net awards. Oh, and console each other after GoT inevitably loses most of its Emmy nominations. (August-late November)

Pre-Season: People lament that filming has wrapped and bemoan lack of news about (fill in name of character not cast). Express concern that having not seen a trailer means that the marketing isn’t going well, and therefore turn into concern trolls about how the season won’t be very good because there’s no trailer. Make assumptions based on the casting or non-casting of a certain character about how events will play out in a way that they shouldn’t, and how dare they do it that way (Balon Greyjoy, anyone?). Get peeved at the first teaser trailer for no good reason. Express disdain that the first trailer has a shot of “this character in a place they should not be and how dare they get rid of Jacelyn Bywater/Strong Belwas/Big and Little Walder/Raff the Sweetling/Strong Belwas.” It’s mind-numbingly tedious.

Hopefully we can tamp down some of that stuff, folks. And I realize this post might result in “So why don’t you just not visit the site?” responses, so bring ‘em on. But this time is the worst for the hand-wringing.

  • Hodor’s Bastard,

    In the book

Balon dies first because Robb hears about it prior to the Frey wedding. And he gets all excited because he knows that Victorion will try to fight Euron for succession of the throne in Pyke for it and it was their chance to take back Moat Calin.

  • TheStorm,
Yeah, Thx. I reread Catelyn V in ASoS last night to confirm, then went to bed with the milk of the poppy, thoroughly shamed. I can’t believe I forgot that detail AND mixed up the book details with the show. Ugh.

  • TheStorm,

Except the leech order does not matter as it does not effect the future events at all. You learn this in Melisandre’s chapter. I merely corrected hodors bastard and pointed out the correct leech order on the show: Robb, Balon, Joff

  • GreatJon of Slumber,
Or you can go to Westeros and spend a vast amount of time reading and responding to any one of the thousands of esoteric threads in the GoT or Books or General Chatter Forums. Heck, this morning one dude started a thread entitled “Why doesn’t GRRM have an ‘autheir’?”, which attempted to discuss what would happen if the series was never completed. The thread got taken down immediately and the poster was presumably banned. Evidently, even with all the vast amount of mortality talk that encompasses the books and show, there is still one topic that is very taboo.

  • utherwolf,

We could see Balon’s fall without necessarily meeting the other Greyjoys. It’s important that it’s mentioned that Euron’s ship has returned around the same time, maybe we see the ship approaching, but it’s not necessary we meet Euron. A theoretical situation has Balon dying in the premiere and the Iron Islands storyline simply taking a back seat for the rest of the season.

  • Regarding the Iron Islands, maybe Asha/Yara gets taken captive and Euron strikes when Balon no longer has any heirs around. The death of the third king definitely has to play into Stannis’ story, so him taking her captive could be an interesting choice, since she later ends up with him anyway.

  • Hodor’s Bastard:
Balon dies first because Robb hears about it prior to the Frey wedding. And he gets all excited because he knows that Victorion will try to fight Euron for succession of the throne in Pyke for it and it was their chance to take back Moat Calin.

LOL no worries. Not a big deal at all. I just got done doing a re-read of the entire series so it was fresh in my mind.

Ya it made no difference I was just saying the order chronologically of what happened. But ya it had no bearing on it.

  • Rygar:
    GreatJon of Slumber,

I recommend a pizza party sometime next month.

    well played. :)

Good point. Forgive my crankiness. :)

  • Abyss:
    Unbowd UnbentUnhodor,

He is an extra on the show for many years now. Since season 1 I believe.

Hi, I’ve been doing extra work on Thrones since the pilot. I think I’ve had about 6 different roles up to now.

Can’t say anything about filming (you know the score) but this last one yesterday was very different to anything I’ve done before. Totally different area. Seriously guys Season 4 is going to be huge!

  • Season 4 can still premiere on March 30th because Girls season 2, while 12 episodes long, is premiering on January 12 with TWO back-to-back episodes. By my count that has it ending on March 23rd? I wouldn’t be surprised if it is debuting with two episodes just so GoT can have its expected start date.

  • GeekFurious:
We are at least a month away from a teaser. At least two months away from a trailer. And about four months away from the season.

…And about six months away from when the collective fandom (Sullied and Unsullied) screams bloody murder when the RV, on the brink of amazing victory, gets his face smashed in by the Mountain and Tyrion regurgitates his lunch!

  • GreatJon of Slumber: On-season: The show is running. Glorious, as always. (April-June).

…except for when we are discussing “Ratings are Too High/Too Disappointing/Too Low/Not Important/Completely Inaccurate Due to Neilsen’s Crappy System”…… and

“God! The On-Screen Nudity is Too Gratuitous/Too Brief/Too Focused on the Female Actors/Too Limited Due to No-Nudity Contracts/Too Unimportant to the Basic Narrative to Bother With”….

  • GreatJon of Slumber,
    I count the seasons differently:
On-season: the summer of the Game of Thrones year. All is good.

Filming season: all of the fun casting news. (the filming season is so soon after the show finishes airing that I don’t count the time in between as a different season). Things are still good, but people are preparing themselves for the coming ‘winter’.

The Long Night: filming is finished but it is still months until we get a trailer, and there is nothing to entertain us. By far the worst of the seasons. We are left in the dark.

Trailer season: The Long Night is over and we get glimpses of the summer/season to come.

  • RANDOM THOUGHT = I know it doesn’t belong here but just watched doctor who special, and tom baker needs to be on GOT, maybe Manderly or a master from oldtown OR a kindly man…….

  • caoimay,

Watched the BBC special broadcast 2x, already. It was brilliant !

I agree somewhat, with your suggestion, this actor would be an asset to GoT, but
his inclusion would largely depend on what’s in store for the adaptation. There are so
many talented, if exceptional actors, that would raise the bar for the production. Some
story lines might become margined , to increase or highlight already premium roles.
No doubt any proficient actor or actress would be honoured for most roles they’d accept,
but primo well sought out actors may ( or not ) consider a pass. That said, I’m still
hopeful that prime actors continue to show interest in GoT roles. My wish would call
upon the likes of Ian McNeice for lord Manderly, and John Noble for the Kindly Man.
These two are no stranger to serial television, and some time since their height of fame.
Neither may be interested or the show runners character radar. The factor may simply
come down to the writer’s fresh perspective of ASOIAF for upcoming episodes
    ( or seasons).

As Mr Baker may suit the role of an maester, just fine, I hope that if any particular role
comes to pass, that the script reflects his strengths, one he’s demonstrated often enough on Doctor Who.

  • Slightly off-topic: If Comet ISON survives its close encounter with the sun next week, it should provide a decent celestial show in December. HBO should use it (or a “blood-red colorized” version of it) to set a pre-trailer ominous tone for S4. Its timing is impeccable.

  • Jentario:
    Hi-Fi,

Cool beans. They made her a bit too crazy in season 3, but that’s fine I guess.

To be honest, she was less crazy on the show than she was in my head (except for the baby jars)!

For some reason, when reading, I pictured her as being really neurotic, like much more shrill, with a bit of a twitch and stuff.

  • Patchy Face: Rimshot, Thanks for checking in. We’ve missed you. Maybe you can be around a bit now since shooting has wrapped.

Thank you! I’ve missed being on here too. I’ve had a very busy year with three long term committments in a row; ‘Line Of Duty’, ‘Our Robot Overlords’ & ‘Dracula’ plus loads of other extra gigs, including Thrones. I’ll try to get on here more now that the busy season for us extras is over.

  • Eren: Rimshot, Are there plan for season 5 yet?

Well, I’m not a member of the crew/staff so I have no knowledge. Indeed, noone knows if there will be a fifth season until HBO gives it the greenlight but I’d be very surprised if there isn’t one!

  • Rimshot: Well, I’m not a member of the crew/staff so I have no knowledge. Indeed, noone knows if there will be a fifth season until HBO gives it the greenlight but I’d be very surprised if there isn’t one!

Seeing as how the ratings keep getting higher and higher, they’d be stupid not to greenlight a 5th season.

  • Rimshot,

    ebevan91,

Plus, the actual announcements for the commissioning of another season as the current one airs has always been nothing more than a formality. Half the scripts are already written and many locations and dates booked for filming by early spring.

  • the greyjoy brothers are too important to the cut, Balon i am sure will die in the last episode and maybe the last scene or two. That why it is fresh in the minds of the viewers mind for season 5 maybe inter-cut with Arya getting on a boat?

  • Greenjones: spotli
