MGoT: Overheard in the production offices

The “overhead on set” has been a staple post of the official Making Game of Thrones blog since the beginning. Cat Taylor offers up another edition, this time with phrases overheard at the production office during pre-production meetings.

“We’re going to be killing the stuntmen 3 times each at least, so we’ll need to look at beards and hair.”

“They do say an owl is twice as hard to do as the eagle, and you know what that was like.”

“There is no silent wind, only noise wind.”

“We can’t tube the silent wind across?”

“No.”

Winter Is Coming: An owl? This isn’t Harry Potter, yo!

  • Valyrian Plastic: Now THIS is an article worth talking about!

Wow…so many tidbits of info! 3 separate battles ongoing at CB! I assume 1) south CB attack 2) North CB attack and 3) Stannis’s army attacks with horses! NM seems very excited. I’m drooling.

  • Nick_Scryer:
    Hodor’s Bastard,
    Indeed! Great piece of info!

I want to hear more about these great Hungarian stunt guys! Falling off the wall, perhaps? Also, I was hoping he would mention the amount of horses used…but….we’ll have to wait and see…

  • Scudder,

    Thanks for that! Interesting article.

The three battles occurring simultaneously will be a great change from the book and hopefully suitable recompense for the ruining of the Stannis saves Jon surprise.

My initial expectations for the episode also seem to be wrong. I originally thought we might have a Kings Landing arc (Tyrion kills Tywin) in episode 9 as well but now it seems likely that it will be in episode 10. Which may make episode 10 the best episode of the season!

Exactly! I think some folks here discussed this possible scenario previously. Viewers will just be catching their breath with the gruesome, crazy ep 9 battle, then ep 10 happens and BAM! Deaths galore….

  • Good to know the first thing that comes to mind when talking about owls is Harry Potter. Owls and ravens. Yeah, pigeons are really worthless.

  • If Episode 8 features what I think it will feature it could be called ‘The Snake and the Mountain’, like 105 ‘The Wolf and The Lion’

Lol, I did actually suggest “Castle Black” as an episode title back when I thought they were splitting the battle in two (like the books). But it’s not a very inventive name so I really can’t take any credit. :P

  • Family, Duty, Hodor,

Are you kidding, episode 9 will be amazing! The last three episodes will be triple hits, all three some of the best eps in the series. I’m actually more afraid of the mid-season. I think we’re going to see a lot of deviations there, hopefully good ones.

  • Jentario,

Episode 9 will be amazing. Just compared to Season 3 episode 9 and Season 1 episode 9 it won’t have quite the same impact, I expect. And even getting it as good as Blackwater will be a major challenge. So yeah, I hope I’m wrong of course but I do think it has the possibility of being the weakest episode 9 of the show, just because the previous three episode 9s have pretty much been the best 3 episodes of the show so far.

But, as you say, Episodes 2 and 8-10 are bound to be excellent. The real worry is Episode 4-6 but I have faith in D&D!

  • RE the owl, assuming they are implying what I think they are,

I’m imagining an owl (maybe a snow white one) accompanying Coldhands and being Bloodraven’s way of keeping tabs on things. I know the guy is called Bloodraven and the Three Eyed Crow/Raven, but he’s certainly powerful enough to warg into any bird he wants

  • And Episode 2 something like ‘The Third Century’ or ‘The Three Hundredth Year’. I like the first best

    EDIT:‘The 300th Year’

  • Family, Duty, Hodor,

With Ygritte’s death, it can be a very powerful episode. For me, that scene was the single saddest death in the series to date (the Red Wedding was more jarring and anger inducing than sad, at least on my first read). The dialogue between Ygritte and Jon is heartbreaking, and I’m sure it can be replicated on screen (as long as Kit doesn’t overdo his acting like in 3×10). Anyway, I have trust in D&D, Kit and Rose that they will (or rather, they have) do that scene justice.

I think it can contest with Blackwater to be the best episode, even if it’s not the most surprising.

  • Khal-A-Bunga,

I like the line, but I’m not digging it as an episode name. I’d much rather have something simple and straightforward, like Blackwater was. “Blood and Snow” for instance… Just spitballing, but you get the general idea.

If RV-Mountain-regurgitation in ep8, CB in ep9 and “wherever whores go” in ep10, I wonder where they’ll place snow castles and “Only Cat”? I assume it will be part of ep10 as well. Balon in an earlier episode? Just awesome stuff to come.

Please note that I am NOT speculating on LS in ep10….I want to be surprised.

  • Hodor’s Bastard,

I always imagined the Only Cat scene closing episode 9. People think is Blackwater again and then Lysa flies. I don’t know how they could close it otherwise. LS would be closing the series just as it closed the book. Like the WW on series 2.
Episode 9 would begin with snow in the Eyrie and finish with snow in the Eyrie. By the way, I’ll watch out for the intro’s map on the 1st episode to see if at least Winterfell is covered in snow already.
NM said episode 9 will feature three battles. I know of Castle Black and Meereen but I can’t think of a third.

  • Not sure if its been said but what if the owl replaces the Elk as CHs animal counterpart, it may be easier to do CGI wise without looking cheesy, and it keeps a significant level of badassery

  • That Stark boy:

I believe he meant that all 3 battles are at CB…as we have surmised previously, all 3 skirmishes there are to be combined in ep 9. I have no idea when they’ll do anything in Slaver’s Bay. Prob eps 4-7. I’m sure Ser Tahu, Jentario and others will re-issue their cool predictions shortly….

  • Throner,

It has been sort of suggested. I at first was thinking those were jokes (i.e. they were suggesting he would “ride” on the owl), and I was envisioning him riding a horse or elk and having an owl on his shoulder.

But yes, he could just walk and have an owl I suppose.

  • I think the highlights from season 4 will be

    1st part- Events on KL
    2nd part -Arya and Dany
3rd part -RV, CB, EP10’s crazy shit.

  • I assumed that, regarding the owl, they were talking about a ‘stunt double’ for Orell’s eagle, specifically when Mel fries it.

  • Hodor’s Bastard: I’m sure Ser Tahu, Jentario and others will re-issue their cool predictions shortly….

Already working on it. Now that filming is done there’s no new details that can come out and prove me wrong :P. Also, my personal predictions for how they will adapt AFfC/ADwD have changed a bit, so there’s that, too (for example, I am now predicting the fighting pits as the closing scene of season 5, instead of being in mid-S6, and I am predicting Stannis vs the Boltons and the battle of Meereen co-occupying 6×09).

    That Stark boy:

This^. I would also add the situation with YarAsha and Ramsay and Bran and co as being other likely highlights of the midseason.

But yeah, 4×10 is going to be absolutely insane. Balon’s death (I think the lack of Euron essentially confims that it is in the finale), Lysa’s death, Shae’s death (assuming they follow the books with that), Tywin’s death and Catelyn’s undeath all in one episode, as well as other important scenes such as the chaining of the dragons (I have finally conceded that it will be in S4), Stannis’ offer to Jon and Jorah being banished.

  • An owl gives me an impression of something beyond the Wall. They are creepy and amazing creatures which can be used to great effect visually. Maybe Bran or someone will warg one, since that’s what the statement seems to indicate, that it is extremely difficult to show and animal being warged.

  • Could the owl just be a code name? Anyway, I want CH with an animal. Preferably the Elk but I understand how improbable it is, so a horse will do (hopefully a huge undead horse).

  • Jentario:

Not that it matters, but I don’t believe the elk was ever undead in ASoS. It collapsed in the cold and CH killed it for food for Bran & Co. Right?

  • Hodor’s Bastard,

I always thought/assumed it was undead. Also, not sure if you are joking about the meal, as my sense was that Coldhands fed Bran and co. pieces of those Nights Watch deserters he killed- the meat was identified as pork and I don’t think you’d find many (any) pigs in the middle of the woods

I joke not about such sumptuous matters!

Yes…the “other white meat” scene you describe is from Bran I in ADwD. Then in Bran II in ADwD they do partake of the deceased elk for a while before the excitement near BR’s cave. In summary….”When his elk died, Coldhands butchered it for food, but all the steaks are gone now and they are all weak from hunger and cold, particularly Jojen.”
