HBO’s year-end promo provides a tiny glimpse of season 4
By Winter Is Coming on in Marketing, Media.

To a man dying of thirst in the desert, even a small drop of water can seem like manna from heaven. In that vein, we present this 6 second clip of scenes from the upcoming season of Game of Thrones. This is cut from a longer 2013 year-end promo that began airing on HBO this weekend.

Update: The complete HD version of the HBO Year-End promo is now available. Enjoy!

The video was originally captured and posted to Tumblr by this enterprising fan.

Winter Is Coming: 6 seconds of pure Thrones goodness. Tyrion looking surly. Jaime, clean-shaven and back in old duds. Joffrey at his wedding. Sansa… somewhere. Even this super short and low-quality tease has got me pretty excited!

It could be but it seems weird that the champion from Meereen would be riding towards the city walls from the outside. He should be approaching from the opposite direction.

Having just rewatched a great deal of Breaking Bad and also GoT’s Second Sons and tBatMF eps, I would venture a guess that that lovely zooming on the charging horse shot could well be the work of one Michelle MacLaren. Meaning eps. 4 or 5.

    Greenjones,

Jaime and the Book is Episode 3, calling in the KG after Joffrey’s death at the end of Ep 2.

The horse charge is Episode 4. It’s an “Episode 4″ moment. If PW is entirely ep 2, Dany’s story should pick up around midseason to fill the lull in other storylines.

Tyrion’s trial I’d put starting at Episode 5, since it’s a safe assumption Mountain v. RV is in Ep. 8. (for maximum RV exposure)

And Sansa, I have no idea. It could be anywhere Ep. 4-6. (not 3, she won’t teleport from KL to the Eyrie..I hope.)

    ATG,

Last year’s Year End trailer showing S3 was uploaded to Youtube by Dec 3,2012. We got shots of Dany and the Unsullied, Tyrion’s wedding (holy crap episode 8 material!), and Cersei/Olenna in the Sept.

    Joffrey: Ep2
Tyrion: Ep4 (First day of trial)
    Dany: Ep4
Jaime: Ep5/6 (Combined white book scene/giving Brienne her task)
    Sansa: Ep10 (Snow castle scene)

  75. jentario

    Leo,

Tyrion has two big trial moments, so IMO this could either be episode 4/5 or episode 7.

  76. Greenjones
    Posted December 16, 2013 at 4:23 am | Permalink

    Nick_Scryer,

It might be the trial that I look forward to most. I love how slowly, Tyrion is beginning to dress in black like his father while, ironically, this year his father will dress in red for the PW. He looks so pissed off in those two shots and I can’t wait to see how Dinklage plays the complete bitterness that we’ll see this season.

I hope they save some of the spiteful remarks toward Cersei from aCoK that they excised in Season 2. If last season was Tyrion cowed and trying to be kind and make the best of his diminished power, then this season will be him taking fucking names.

    Leo,

We also got an “In Production” BTS video in December 2nd, and it was over a minute long and filled with shots and cast/crew interviews, so the next season 4 video might not be very far away. I am hoping for a lengthy BTS early next year (early-mid January?) to tide us over to the trailer season that starts in late February.

    CrimsonKnight,

I don’t think that’s an unfinished set, it’s taking place in the Eyrie so it looks to me like they’ve based the design of the new areas on a bird cage. I think it looks cool from what little we can see of it.

I think I’m the only one who likes Jaime’s short hair. I’ve seen some candids of NCW with the new look and he looks so much younger and sexier. YUM!
Also, before bitching about Sansa’s hair, people should wait and see D&D’s reason for not changing it. Maybe it’s not necessary for the show or maybe they found a way to dye it only for the scenes. GoT is not the only job these actors have and their looks might be important for other parts. I hope she keeps it red though. Sophie looks gorgeous with it.

I’m not sure if Loras will ever be part of the KG on the show, but I would be sad if the writers cut out his quasi-mentor/protégé interactions with Jaime, like their conversation about the best and worst of the white cloaks. I very much enjoyed how the Knight of Flowers is a foil to/mirror image of the Kingslayer in the novels, but the showrunners may not have enough time to explore that theme fully. As someone else has already suggested, Brienne may take Loras’ place in the TV series for the White Book scene.

It looks like scenes from a top class movie. I’m super excited right now.

    Talisa’s ghost,

If you all folks head to the comment section of the last article you’ll see we already discussed that. There was a sort of an agreement in the air that they did dye Sansa’s hair brown – because it would be stupid not to do so, not with auburn-haired Lysa right beside her all the time – and they digitally altered her hair back to auburn (you can see her hair is different than usual, way more brownish) as a courtesy to the Unsullied.

I think there is a good possibility for this as well, which as a Loras fan of course would piss me off and once again beg the question, what is Loras even still doing on the show if all his important book canon parts are either given to Brienne or rewritten into some major gay joke? He’s not even a real character anymore just some placeholder/spare Tyrell. Oh well, they can always find some more “squires” for him to keep busy, I guess.

  87. That Stark boy
    Posted December 16, 2013 at 5:41 am | Permalink

    Nick_Scryer,

I still think that’s unfinished CGI. It is definitely the Eyrie. Probably the outside of it, since we can see the pillars are rather snowy – snow castle scene yaaay….. – the look on Sansa’s face is perfect for the scene. Just as I imagined it (Sophie rocks IMO. If she nails that scene as she had nailed EVERY GODDAMNED SCENE ON THIS GODDAMNED SHOW, I… I’m already in love with her so there is nothing left to do). Back on topic… If you imagine the Eyrie walls in place of those blue… thingies over there, you’ll realize it looks way more legit than cages.

I also cringed a little on Loras’ character assassination. Leave it to the Climb and Kissed by Fire would have been perfect. The eternal Renly/Loras shipper on me cried that day. But now I’d let him have some fun. I think Dragonstone is just next season.

    That Stark boy:
    siberia82,

I also cringed a little on Loras’ character assassination. Leave it to the Climb and Kissed by Fire would have been perfect. The eternal Renly/Loras shipper on me cried that day. But now I’d let him have some fun. I think Dragonstone is just next season.

Seemed more realistic to me that Loras would dip his wick a little before writing off anyone else. Ever been heartbroken? It tends to happen. There were subtle hints if Loras’ misery throughout, the show just couldn’t pause to dwell on it. I imagine next season it’ll place him where he needs to be and all will be well.

I also noticed an VFX ‘un-multiplied’ string of Unsullied against the cliff face towards which the Meereen champion was charging.
That cliff face , not in the book, but I like here as a back drop, very scenic … that is near Split?

In the case of Loras, I thought it’d be an additional KL plot this year that as Cersei indicates that she has a plan to Tyrion to not marry Loras, she’ll make it look like he can’t marry her so he has to become a kingsguard

Hopefully that’ll allow some of his character to actually survive… because it wouldn’t really make sense for the gay characature that he is now to demand to lead a storm of dragonstone’s walls

What’s the deal with Jaime’s hair? No issues with it just wondering why it’s cut. In the books he cuts it when he’s on the run with Briene after he escapes Robb’s forces. That makes sense because he wants to disguise himself. But why does he cut it now?

Off topic: I rewatched Kissed By Fire and I love that in the final scene with Tywin, Cersei, and Tyrion, everything has a yellow glow from the lighting. It makes them all look so much more Lannister by making their skin glow and giving them bright yellow hair (except Tyrion). And then again in The Climb the inside of the rooms have yellow walls with yellow curtains, pale orange candles etc. I just thought it was a nice detail.

Im pretty sure that Loras will still end up joining the Kingsguard this season. He still has the marriage to Cersei to get out of and this would be the most likely way the show will go about it. Surely the show can manage to fit in separate scenes for Jaime with both Loras and Brienne.

    Ross,

It would make the most sense to have Daario fill in against the champion of Mereen. What better way to tell the viewers (hey, we recast someone, let’s have him do something cool so people forget about OLD Daario).

Likewise, they’ll probably have some sort of action revolving around Nu-Gregor, to reestablish the Mountain and introduce the new actor.

    Fred Lannister,

Exactly. Although it’s a bit disappointing as I don’t really care for Daario but love Barristan.

    My predictions:

Duel outside Meereen: Episode 4. Dany’s story should be most interesting mid-season to compensate for the lull in the most exciting storylines (Tyrion, Jon, Sansa)

Tyrion trial scene: Difficult to know what stage we’re at here, but my guess is that this is the first scene of the trial. My hunch is that they will want to get the trial going fairly soon, so Episode 4 is my guess.

Joffrey at the Wedding: Episode 2 for sure

Jaime and the White Book: Episode 5 perhaps. A nice midseason scene although it will likely be significantly altered.

Sansa in the Eyrie: Sometime after Episode 3, but other than that difficult to say. I’m going to guess Episode 10.

Interesting. I always wanted a dramatic Brienne-Loras confrontation as well, but as others have pointed out, after the shadow-baby kerfuffle in S2, Loras stated to Margaery that he knows Brienne didn’t “do it” (reason not given). In any case, it would be cool to see Brienne kick his ass…again.

Yeah, I can see the “reborn” Jaime being the one who moves Loras into the KG…but it will be interesting to see how the show deals with the “heir of Highgarden” after the PW, especially with Mace in the picture and assuming there is no Willas or Garlan. Maybe Jaime will move Loras into the KG to spite both the Tyrells and Cersei?

    GG,

Had a thought/overanalysis about the hair and look.

I think it fits well into the idea of Jaime trying to go back to his old life, but not really fitting into it anymore because of the change in his personality due to his experiences.

He’s dressed the same way he did back in the first season, when people joked about him looking like Prince Charming in Shrek, but now he’s missing a hand, his hair has a very utilitarian cut (makes sense, until recently he was unshaved and unbathed), and he’s not really concerned about looking stylish in his clothes.

In the trial picture it isn’t Sansa or the Queen of Thorns. Just two similarly garbed Tyrell extras, I believe. I think that the Queen of Thorns will likely leave King’s Landing post-PW and not be seen again, her work being done.

    Bittersteel,

Yeah, and actually, looking back at that chapter, he even reads about how Barristan the Bold slew the last Blackfyre pretender during the War of the Ninepenny Kings. If theories are correct and fAegon is really a Blackfyre, this might be a great time to incorporate their story. As a guess, it’s a long shot but you never know.

That’s a good point. Jaime with the White Book would let them start explaining lots of important backstory they haven’t touched. Dayne and the Tower of Joy, Barristan and the Blackfyres, Cole and the Dance of Dragons. I’m not holding my breath but they’re running out of chances before certain characters start showing up. The only other way I could see them doing it is with Bran’s weirwood visions.

He himself often wears a bear. He objects to the long braided beard like had in the second Narnia movie. When he arrived in Croatia he had a beard so he may have it at some point. Or maybe he hadn’t started filming yet.

    Greenjones,

But up until this point he’s been pretty much clean-shaven throughout, and I imagine he will be at Joffrey’s wedding too, but even as a prisoner he’s in his own clothes so it could be only days since “that happened”. I also thought he wouldn’t want any kind of beard because they’re trickier to dye than hair, and he’s not naturally blonde so it would just be a nuisance.

Actually, that’s another point entirely. Why isn’t he even slightly blonde anymore? I don’t imagine him caring about his looks that much and he’s supposed to be a Lannister. ‘Watched the first episode earlier today, and his hair was golden with hints of black.

On the Kingsguard tower though, I’m glad they made it more than just a white room. They have a great eye for production design and clearly this year will be no exception. Those brilliant costumes, sets and locations are three reasons why I love the books and show equally.

I’ve done a lot of zooming on that photo, and if we’re talking about the guy standing in the center of Dany’s group, he has brown hair that’s parted just like Michiel Huisman’s hair in that set photo from Croatia. Also, he is wearing a baggy garment at his legs like Daario’s armour-kilt thing from last season.

    Rygar,

Lol, the joke of course is that they’re going to have to cover this stuff at some point. Otherwise Aegon will turn up in Season 5 and people will wonder why they should care. When they’re told he’s a Targaryen they’ll be like: err, ok. And when it’s (presumably) unveiled that he’s a Blackfyre pretending to be a Targaryen they really won’t give a damn. So if the show follows the books, they’d better get this stuff sorted. Oberyn talking about Elia and her children should help somewhat.

    Bittersteel,

Yeah, I think Bran dreaming could be an excellent way of doing it.

    Family, Duty, Hodor,

We’ll find out this season whether or not they are completely cutting ‘Aegon’ and company. There are going to be cuts coming in season 5 and beyond. I think at least one major storyline will be cut out of the series. The most likely to be cut are Arianne and the Sand Snakes, IMO. But I could see them scrapping ‘Aegon’/Connington/The Golden Company in favor of getting Daenerys to Westeros sooner.

I noticed something in the HD Version, It looks like Sansa is still wearing her purple dress from the wedding underneath that dark coat, you can see what look like the Stark wolf sigils on it. I’m sure she won’t be still parading around in Stark attire by episode 10 so it looks like my previous guess about the scene being the “Snow Castle scene” is wrong.

But then the transition to Alayne seems illogical. People in the Eyrie will already have seen her with red hair, why suddenly make the change? Wouldn’t that seem too suspicious? It all depends on Lysa, I think. She’s the one who tells Sansa to dye her hair. Dying it after Lysa/Moon Door is a possibility though. Just a bit weird.

The gif I just internet zoomed but I’m pretty sure Jorah is standing between Dany and Daario and the Barristan is standing to the right of them.

    That Stark boy,

I could very well be wrong about that one. I thought the guy in the white shirt in the bottom picture was a props guy holding up a sword but he could be holding up some sort of filming equipment too.

We know that Lord Royce and Lady Waynwood are in this season, so I don’t think that “Alayne” is going to be a secret until after Lysa dies, since the only likely way we’d see them is if they came to the Eyrie for Lysa and Petyr’s wedding, which Sansa is at.

I hope they include the parallel between the two sisters that both rip up a doll. They have cast a young girl in Arya’s storyline (Trixiebell Harowell or some such name) so they may have that ripped up doll business. I wonder if they’ll include Sansa doing the same to Sweetrobin’s creepy ass?

    Greenjones,

Look right behind Sansa’s shawl on the right (on the first two frames). That’s a small white tree, right?

    Greenjones,

Ok, let’s over-analyse this. Keep attention to the grey border on Sansa’s head, that I have circled in red. Not only does it look out off place, it never goes away. If I wouldn’t know better, I would say they cut her out from a grey background ( which would be unusual for a greenscreen) and didn’t work all that well there. – But no, that’s bullshit… :D

I wonder if they’ll keep the pissing taunts in from the Meereenese? I wonder, but certainly don’t hope. Like tokars, and most of Daario’s fashion sense, they can work on paper (literally), but would just look ridiculous in a multi-award winning/nominated series.

I wonder if they’ll have Daario take a chest wound before defeating/beheading the Meereenese champion, then hold the head up while leaving a giant shit on the ravaged body? Is that too much for an award-winning series? Anybody miss Strong Belwas?

Just watched The Hobbit: DoS, and I actually quite liked it. Hobbit spoilers to follow. With the excpetion of the shoe-horned Sauron stuff and the slightly ridiculous love triangle (which was well executed, don’t get me wrong, but an elf and a dwarf? really?) it was tons better thanthe first. The pacing was great, Smaug did not disappoint one bit, and in general it felt way better than the first (which only picked up on its second half).

So I stand up to the great Rygar and disagree.

I’m dying to know what object could be under the sheet next to Jaime. I want to see the Meereen champion’s face. Concerning the Champion of Mereen, I really hope Ser Barristan fights him, we have already seen Jorah, Daario and Grey Worm in action and viewers want to see why Barristan was Commander of the Kingsguard. This would be a perfect setting to establish the badassdom of him…
Could that cliff just be a backdrop for future CGI effect. I have seen where CGI artists prefer a stable background; ocean, forest or cliff face as backdrop then erase these elements for future effects. Therefore could the cliff be replaced with Dany’s army stretching back to a artificial horizon?
Also the Champion looks very wimpy, from that perspective, like Daario, Jorah, GW or Barristan could just blow him over with a puff of breath. I expected a mammoth warhorse and knight outfitted in garish armor.
Can’t wait till True Detective (The show looks to be one of tv’s best, perhaps replacing BB) and of course I am anticipating the first GoT trailer for the 4th series to be shown beforehand.

Nothing’s beating Breaking Bad this year. Even GRRM admitted as much. A shame as this will probably be GoT’s strongest season. Over dramatic music, Littlefinger’s monologue.
“Always keep your foes confused” – Joff and Marg at their wedding.
“If they are never certain who you are or what you want” – Jon fighting on top of the Wall, Jaime confronting Tywin
“they cannot know what you are like to do next” – Tyrion being thrown into a cell, Arya going nuts (“gold in the village”)
“Remember that when you come to play the game” – Littlefinger as he’s speaking
    “What game?” – Sansa answering
    “The only game.” – Littlefinger
“The game of thrones” – “Season 4 March 30th”

    1) it’s too faithful to the books ie: the pace of events and too many characters
    2) he prefers self contained episodes of television over the serial.
    3) he’s fed up with the Book Reader fans in the comments section. I don’t blame him there.

    Turncloak,

Thanks – I was looking at the wrong list – this one does make a lot more sense. Though I would still disagree with him, I can understand the logic. And he is correct about the fans being pretty obnoxious sometimes but that shouldn’t influence his reaction to the show. It is almost as if he has decided to fly in the face of the fans to be contrary (RW example).

    Turncloak,

Sepinwall will likely list Game of Thrones just outside of his top ten for this year, or – at the very least – in his top twenty that he’ll be releasing later in the week. He’s a fan of the show, even if he gets very (and deservedly) annoyed with readers (and wiki’ers) and tends to ‘take it out’, so to speak, on the show.

My favorite reviews of the show (and TV reviews, in general) is definitely the A.V. Club. They’ve got reader and non-reader reviewers who both really get the show, and it’s cool to follow along and watch how their reactions both intersect and diverge.

Looking at the Sansa pick again, the place seems kind of snowy. This gives me hope we might actually see the snow castle scene in some manner or form. Maybe she’ll just look at the snow and remember Winterfell and tell LF about it, if the actual castle won’t feature.

For 3 seasons now, they’ve used this episode to tease what’s going to happen in the next season. I don’t really see why it should be different this season? Do you really expect them to end Tyrion’s and Sansa’s storylines on a cliffhanger? I don’t.

    Lef,

It’s not really a cliffhanger. And it’s much better than the awkward lull which was season 3′s finale. Do you remember the season 2 finale? We had the HOTU, the White Walkers, Robb and Talissa’s marriage, Jaquen and Arya, Bran in the ruins of Winterfell- all big and climactic scenes in the same episode. So this season we’ll get Tyrion killing Shae and Tywin which will HAVE to be in episode 10 unless you honestly want that to happen in episode 8, “Only Cat” which is not a cliffhanger and actually sets up Sansa’s season 5 journey quite well as well as (by mentioning Cat) setting up the final big scene- Stoneheart, which should be there as a season ender anyway. Aside from those characters/storylines there is plenty of room to set up season 5 stuff in the episode with Bran reaching the cave and confronting the three eyed crow, Arya setting off on a boat to Braavos, Jon becoming Lord Commander, Roose and Ramsay (and Theon) meeting up ahead of an attack on the Ironborn and taking control of the North with fArya, Asha returning to confront her uncle and possibly even a set up for the Kingsmoot, Brienne already well into her journey in search of Sansa and god knows what else.

That’s why I think it will absolutely be an epic episode.

Since episode 10 has gotten the reputation of being a wind-down, they’ll probably want to shake up that formula. Episodes 8-10 of season 4 could be one blast after another. It would really cement the show’s reputation and ability to defy formula. That could be the big challenge for the show as it goes on and on: viewers all around the web seem to know, ‘everything hits big in episode 9, calms way down for 10′. Well, defy that expectation if you can, I say.

Obviously we disagree on some things – I see a few tertiary characters getting dropped that you don’t, but we do agree, I think, that the Greyjoys will come into play in Season 5, much as you’ve put it together. I even think we could see Yara return to the Iron Islands in Season 4/Ep 10 with a brief cameo from someone who could play Euron and announce he’s crowned himself king – with Yara commenting that “Your brother won’t stand for that.” “Victarion is a dullard and a brute, and has neither the intelligence or ambition.” Something along those lines. Euron, as I’ve said, need not be a major character, mostly notable by his crazy appearance.

Fun! I enjoy your translation from book to screen. Thanks for bulletizing!

One pet peeve I have about caretaking of dragons. In three memorable S3 scenes, we see them flying and fishing around their seafaring vessel, leading the UnSullied army away from Astapor, and flying over Yunkai while Dany body surfs the multi-ethnic ex-slaves. Are they ever caged during transport (like in the books – which I thought was silly)? Are they always free? After Astapor Fried Kraznys, I can’t imagine how anyone but Dany would want to get near one, for fear of a random hiccup leading to an extra crispy state of existence. Can you imagine being a “pall-bearer” who transports the dragon cages?

And don’t get me started about Dany keeping the dragons chained in a subterranean chamber in Meereen. That was an all-too-convenient plot device for GRRM, imho.

Bryan Cogman himself confirmed that it is not called Castle Black. Also, as far as Lady Stoneheart is concerned: showing her resurrection would be spoiling it. Having them just stumble across the body without going any further than that wouldn’t spoil anything for those who haven’t read the books. In fact if anything it would just be a painful reminder of the Red Wedding. :P

    GreatJon of Slumber,
The problem with having YarAsha return in the finale to find that Euron has already crowned himself is that it would require them to have Balon’s death off-screen, which I don’t think they would do because it is a golden opportunity to add more drama.

Also, just out of curiosity, which tertiary characters are you referring to? I thought I did a good job of restricting the number of characters I included, and for the ones I did include I had decent reasons for including them.

    Hodor’s Bastard,
I believe that the dragons travelled in boxes in season 2, but then were let free in season 3, presumably because they were too big for boxes.

And thank you all for the positive feedback :P.

It would most definitely spoil it. Viewers already know that the brotherhood has resurrection powers. That would be lame if the show took that approach. Viewers can put two and two together as they are not living under rocks :). Also I thought Nutter confirmed the episode for episode 9. I’m sure Cogman is just trying to conceal the name after the fact as this knowledge was probably not approved by HBO and gives away where the episode is taking place a little earlier than the writers would like

I think you can still do Balon’s death on-screen, just not with Yara there. He’d be by himself.

As for tertiary characters, I don’t see Balon Swann surviving to the screen. Darkstar, maybe. I don’t know that we get Quentyn at all, or he survives in such truncated form that it’s not even necessary. I think Harry Strickland can go entirely. I’d lose most of Tyrion’s companions on the Rhoyne — Keep JonCon and Young Griff for obvious reasons (plot), add in Varys for about half the ride just because he’s interesting and have him get off the boat halfway through, and keep Septa Lemore for obvious HBO reasons (boobs). The rest can be lost, maybe one unnamed drone or background character.

Either way – you’ve done a really nice job, as I’ve said in the past.

What’s wrong with that scene happening at the end of episode 8?

Tyrion will be arrested at the end of episode 2. I guess that the trial we’ll begin in episode 4. How long do you think they could stretch that? 2-3 episodes? That leads us to episode 6. The duel in episode 7.. and then you could have Tyrion’s escape in episode 8.

Then, a Castle Black episode.. and you could have him being sent to Daenerys in the finale. I’m sure that the possibility to have Tyrion and Daenerys meeting each other in Season 5 would be way more effective as a finale than Tywin’s death.

Some people want them to break patterns.. well, for 2 seasons episode 7 and 8 have been a bit dull, doing things this way would be a good opportunity to break THAT pattern.

    Ser Tahu,

I really like all the work you’ve done with this and I believe that a lot of the timeline will shake out more or less as you describe.

The one plotline I think most of the fans are way off on is Yara. I’ve seen so many people twisting themselves in knots trying to get Yara back to Pyke in order to be present for either Balon’s death or the Kingsmoot. I’ve even seen some people suggesting that Yara will be captured by Stannis on her way to the Dreadfort and her being dragged along to the Wall with him.

These leaps in logic IMO are all being done because the most logical development (in terms of the show universe) is being willfully ignored. The reason Yara is going to the Dreadfort in order to try and free Theon is because she will get there and be captured by Ramsay. This makes sense in so many ways since the show has gone to great lengths to emphasize the bond that Theon and Yara have (far more than the books). Yara in Ramsay’s clutches is the only person left that would drive Theon to gather his will and help her escape later on in the story. It also then would lead to them both being picked up by Stannis later on and the book continuity being picked up at that time.

I am not suggesting that Yara will become a fake Stark or a fake anything, only that she will be Ramsay’s plaything that Theon will vow to eventually rescue. The motivation for him is much stronger under this scenario because of their connection and it brings another character into the Theon/Ramsay plotline which needs to continue for a while before coming together with the Winterfell/Stannis plotline.

As for Balon, I think he’s going to die mysteriously, he will die on-screen and he will die alone (without any other major characters present). I also think it will happen in the order of the leeches on the show (I realize the leech order in the books wasn’t accurate but believe the show named them in that order for a reason). If you have him dying in the finale as in your scenario, it’s completely anticlimatic after Joffrey’s death. It makes far more sense to have a quick scene near the end of E1 which sets the audience up for the anticipation of Joff’s death. I think they can have a Dragonstone scene in E1 with Davos/Stannis/Melisandre discussing the power of king’s blood and the leeches which immediately transitions to Balon at Pyke so it won’t seem awkward. In order to preserve the rest of the Greyjoy developments, you never return to Pyke for the rest of S4 and in S5 once Euron/Victarion and maybe Aeron are cast, you can go there and talk about what happened there after Balon died.

This is well put. People are indeed tying themselves in knots trying to figure out ways in which Balon dies without introducing the rest of the Greyjoys until the next season, and pretty much, the way you do that is, you don’t. Pyke’s a secondary plot in a lot of ways. Kudos to D&D for keeping it as prominent as it has been. The rest of them aren’t needed for Season 4 – let’s clear some space and let it come up in Season 5 as well when we get (presumably, depending on TWoW) the last of the major new characters introduced. He dies, mysteriously, alone, perhaps after berating some underling for a minute and then walking out onto that bridge, et cetera. Then leave Yara to her own plot, before they spring her later.

    King Tommen,

I must say that I agree with you completely. In the overall story arc for the SHOW, it makes much more sense to happen this way. There is absolutely no reason for having Yara embark on a journey (in the last ep. of a season), just to have her return nine or ten episodes later after her father dies. I also agree we’ll most likely see Balon’s death in the first episode of the fourth season (perhaps even as a pre-credits scene), after which the rest of the season can focus on Theon-Asha-Ramsay plots.

    Ser Tahu,

I really admire your excellent season by season predictions. They are amazing IMO. The pacing for the majority of the storylines (Cersei, Jaime, Daenerys, Dorne) are just as how I imagine they’ll turn out to be. I do have some doubts concerning some other storylines, namely the storyline at the Wall and Stannis’ storyline there. This is going a little slow, I’d say. I wonder what the reason is for so many people to believe the election will be in season 5, let alone spread out over multiple episodes (as in your predictions)?

Also, I’d think we”ll have to accept the fact that certain characters will most definitely be in fewer episodes than we are used to know: Sansa, Bran and Arya will be in no more than 6 episodes a season. I hate the idea of “catching up with characters” just for the sake of it. That is the reason episodes like “The Bear and the Maiden Fair” are less liked.

As to the season overall, I thinkwe will see a limited amount of storylines per episode, just for people to be able to comprehend the extensive amount of storylines and characters. This is not something I’d personally hope, but it does seem logical from a tv-series point of view.

There are soooo many new important characters, and many will be introduced in the earlier episodes. If there’s one character that would benefit from star-type casting, it’s Doran Martell. Of the remaining ones to be introduced, he’s the one most removed from A) the action or B) other characters we already know and love (even Euron/Victarion will have the link to Theon and Yara). He’s too important, to me, to be dumped entirely, but his best relation – the Red Viper – won’t be surviving, and the motivator for a lot of his action, Arianne, has not yet been introduced.

In cases like this, you have to introduce characters using shorthand, which means either A) appearance – i.e., Euron Greyjoy, a lunatic with an eyepatch, or B), a star. We won’t get Ben Kingsley. But someone like that – where his importance is conveyed just by seeing the actor’s face. Then we’ll *want* to pay attention to the storyline, by that alone.

I think there are three possibilities for Quentyn, and they depend on the pacing of Dany’s story:

-Quentyn is cut and his bigger scenes replaced by other character/s. Simple, clean and logical but you do lose a great character.
-Quentyn appears in season 6 and the Daznak Pit happens around episode 4 of that season, as opposed to the end of season 5.
-Quentyn appears in the mess which would now be season 5. Way too many new storylines are fighting for the attention of the viewer, and the viewer is pushed away, confused. The Quentyn story also awkwardly steps over the Dorne story (either spoiling it or furthering the viewer confusion). The Daznak Pit is late in season 5.

The most best long term decision would be option 2 IMO, but the obvious (and completely understandable choice) is number one. If one character/storyline has to be cut, let it be Quentyn. The last is just not an option IMO. Not in season 5, of all seasons.

Giancarlo Esposito with an apropriate costume is the only Doran I can think of. The thing you want to nail is the face- it has to be smart and good, yet at the same time very sad and tired. The only actor I can think of that has such a look is Gus Fring from Breaking Bad, and he also happens to be of a consistent (in the looks at least) with the casting of Pedro Pascal and Indira Varma, that middle-eastern/Spanish look. But I don’t know…

-Quentyn appears in season 6 and the Daznak Pit happens around episode 4 of that season, as opposed to the end of season 5.

With Dany already set to spend season 4 dealing with Meereen, I don’t know how anybody can think Daznak’s Pit isn’t happening in season 5.

Regarding Ser Tahu’s proposed season 4, the writers love shock moments too much to not kill Dontos in the manner he dies in the books (and him going with Littlefinger to the Vale makes no sense). I also don’t get the point of splitting Littlefinger kissing Sansa and the confrontation with Lysa into two episodes; that would harm the momentum of that story.

    Sean C.,

I agree with you on Daznak’s pit and Littlefinger’s kiss but disagree with you on Dontos. I wasn’t a huge fan of Littlefinger killing Dontos right in front of Sansa in the book as it seemed a little cliched and unsubtle (despite the rest of the scene and dialogue being amazing). I think taking Dontos to Lysa and then framing him for the murder would be great as it involves a character the audience has come to know and it makes them realise how long-term Littlefinger’s schemes are. Dontos going with Littlefinger to the Vale can be justified as being for his own safety. Afterall, he’d be a huge suspect back in KL and likely killed.

Interesting discussion anyway. Not had time to read Ser Tahu’s epic yet but sounds like it’d be worth my while.

We’ve discussed this before, and I’m pretty certain based on Tony Way’s twitter that he did not spend enough time filming to be in more than two to three scenes, which wouldn’t make sense if he goes to the Eyrie and is framed for Lysa’s death. Even if it’s an economic and smart way of using the character, it doesn’t seem like the showrunners went this route. Alas, poor Dontos. I knew him, Ser Lothor: a fellow of infinite jest, of most excellent fancy.

    Turncloak,
Sharper viewers might pick up on it, however I still know some unsullied that haven’t realised that Stannis is going to the Wall, and that was pretty much explicitly stated.

    GreatJon of Slumber,
    For the ones you mentioned:
Balon Swann – it really depends on how he impacts Dorne in TWoW. In some of my theories he would be in some pretty important scenes in TWoW (I plan to do my TWoW predictions in this same format – ie season 7 (and 6) predictions, so you will see what I mean then)
Darkstar – I think that, if all of the other co-conspirators are reduced to extras, who would make it in on the merit of his AFfC material. And he is likely to have an impact in TWoW, so he could be kept in for that.
Quentyn – I don’t see them cutting his entire storyline. I just don’t. The PoV at the greatest risk of being cut, if any, would be Aeron
and by extension Arch and Gerris – I kill Arch off pretty quickly to add drama (he essentially replaces Cletus). As for Gerris, you migtht remember when Barristan visits Arch and Gerris in the books. He gives them the mission to send a message to the Tattered Prince, and then take Quentyn’s bones back to Dorne. Based on the chapters from the battle of Meereen that have been read it seems that the mission to Tatters is important. I then have a theory that they will return to Westeros ahead of Daenerys (with Quentyn’s bones), and that will be important.
Harry Strickland – I see him as being a one scene featured extra, just because the Golden Company would need a representative in that scene. And if any members of the GC do anything important in TWoW he could end up being a combination of all them.
concerning Lemore – just for the record if it was my choice I would have Haldon Halfmaester instead, but as you said, boobs :P
    .

    King Tommen,
I have seen that theory discussed over on westeros here:
    http://asoiaf.westeros.org/index.php/topic/96453-heavy-book-spoilers-possible-character-merge/?p=5203556
As I said there it is possible, but I just don’t think it will happen. I think it would change too many things in the North and Iron Islands storylines. It could also cause major complications down the road, depending on how TWoW and ADoS play out.

    House Mormont,
yeah, but then you and the rest of the viewers quickly warmed up to them once you realised who they were, correct? :P As for Mallister and Pyke, I think they would just be featured extras (or a regular extra, in Mallister‘s case). Introducing them would be good for 2 reasons:
    1) you get to keep one of Sam’s best moments, with him persuading them to support Jon
and 2) it means that people will actually know who Cotter Pyke is when Jon sends him to Hardhome

    GreatJon of Slumber,
This. I personally would like to see Jimmy Smits as Doran, because he could pass as Pedro Pascal’s older brother. If I could cast one high-profile actor for each of the three major new groups of characters (Dorne, Aegon and the Greyjoy brothers), it would be:
    Doran – Jimmy Smits
    Euron – David Wenham
    JonCon – Damian Lewis

    Jentario,
My solution to this was to keep Quentyn’s mission a secret from the viewer until Doran’s “Vengeance. Justice. Fire and Blood.” speech. That way the viewer will believe Arianne’s speculation that he is plotting to usurp her, adding extra drama to the Dorne plot and acting as a complement to it. I actually think this might have been GRRM’s original plan before he split up AFfC and ADwD.

    Sean C.,
When I posted my season 4 predictions last week I originally had Littlefinger killing Dontos like in the books. I can’t remember who suggested it, though , but someone pointed out that they haven’t cast a Marillion V2 they could have Dontos assume that role. I know that one isn’t likely, but it is an idea I really liked. As for splitting those scenes, my main reason is that the finale will be packed as it is.

  389. Ser Tahu
    Posted December 18, 2013 at 8:09 pm | Permalink

Yeah, I know I’m wrong on the Dontos front, but I can’t be bothered changing it :P. In the overall scope of my predictions it isn’t too consequential.

Oh, and guys, Jimmy Smits is literally Doran. He just is. I almost think that they cast Pedro Pascal as Oberyn just so they could have Jimmy Smits as Doran. Also, next year’s season of Sons of Anarchy is supposed to be the final season, so his schedule should be freed up just in time to play Doran.

If they go with the books those should be the episodes he’s in, but that doesn’t mean that we should take IMDB to be the most accurate source. Most of the names it credits in the first episode for example are not actually in ep. 1 like Craster’s Wives and the girl playing the CotF Some of IMDB’s info is updated by fans and some is updated by actor/crew member’s agencies.

Pretty much the last thing he says before getting killed is that Littlefinger should give him his payment so that he can get back to King’s Landing before anybody notices he’s missing, so he wasn’t planning on leaving with them. He was just going to go back before anybody noticed that the court jester had vanished.

Regarding IMDB’s reliability with actors and their corresponding episodes, I agree with what you all have said. However, I’ll say this: certain actors’ agents will go ahead and fill out their information on IMDB, as opposed to waiting for the episode’s cast to be updated once the episode airs. For instance, Pedro Pascal, Kristian Nairn, and Roger Ashton-Griffiths’ agents have all filled out their Season 4 episodes, according to the scripts they received. This doesn’t mean the shows editors can’t and won’t move scenes around to different episodes, but for those actors listed in specific episodes beyond the season premiere, IMDB is usually pretty accurate.

So, in the case of Tony Way as Dontos, my theory is:

He’ll be reintroduced in Episode 1. The Purple Wedding will take place in Episode 2, with the episode ending upon Joffrey’s death. Episode 3 will pick up right where the second episode left off, with the chaos ensuing after Joffrey’s death. Sansa will flee with Dontos unnoticed amidst the panic, just as in the book. Dontos will then be quickly dispatched by Littlefinger, not lasting very long into Episode 3.

    Lef,
I’m not sure if it is the one that Turncloak is talking about, but D&D did say that the last 3 episodes of season 4 would contain many of the scenes that they’ve been looking forward to doing for years. I would say that it is safe to assume that Oberyn vs Gregor would be one of those scenes, so based on that assumption it would have to be in episode 8, and by extension Tyrion’s escape must then be in the finale.

  411. Greenjones
    Posted December 19, 2013 at 2:56 am | Permalink

    Kyle,

How do you know for sure that those actors’ postings are accurate? They seem to be a lot more specific than some of the ones on IMDB (particularly for the ep. 4.1 page which is a mess), but does that actually confirm it?

If you are right though it would confirm a few things. Kristiain “Hodor” Nairn is credited on IMDB in ep. 2, which some of us had assumed would be entirely set at King’s Landing. If that is accurate, then that would mean that the format for that ep. is more like that of a usual episode. Also, we’ve mostly guessed Oberyn will get his head squished in ep. 8, Pedro’s IMDB info (if it is real or trustworthy) would confirm that.

Also, we knew Sarine Sofair (playing Lhara who we assume is a naked-girl-of-the-week role) was in an Alik Sakharov episode from her Spotlight CV, but this would confirm her in ep. 6.Hodor not being in ep. 8 as IMDB suggests, goes against some of my assumptions though. I’d assumed since the girl playing Leaf is credited to an Alex Graves episode that we’d meet her in episode 8 and that would be the one to include the wights-by-the-cave setpiece. Also IMDB doesn’t list Hodor as being in ep ten. Since I doubt Leaf would appear in eps. 2 or 3, this bit of info throws things a little askew.

Well played on both of those. Most major decisions that have happened so far in the books have happened just the same in the show – crucial moments for a particular character were not changed to make a particular character more or less “palatable.” (And spare me Semyon Silvertongue, who, were he on the show, would rank as like the 98th most important character, just behind White Walker Bob, Ser Hugh of the Vale, and just ahead of the guy at Blackwater who gets sliced in half by Sandor Clegane.)

Yes I was referring to the interview with D&D that said they are very much excited for the last 3 episodes. And with the fact that the battle at the wall will be in episode 9 it’s pretty much confirmed what episodes 8 and 10 will be about. The RV vs The mountain is one of the most anticipated scenes from the book and makes perfect sense for episode 8. Tyrion killing Shae and then Tywin in the finale is a perfect bookend to the season. Cat being revived is something I hope for as well in the finale but I’m not 100% sure we’ll get that.

    On casting of Doran Martell:

Per the usual data, he’s meant to be in his early 50s. Pascal is 38 – Oberyn is 42. So he fits there.

Ben Kingsley has the right look and nature – he’s pensive, calm and there’s a lot going on underneath that face. Only drawback is his age – he’s 69, and could be Pascal’s father, not brother. He’s too big a star to do it as well (he’s a two-time Oscar winner, and before you correct me, I refuse to believe he lost for his role in Sexy Beast.) But he fits the mold better than most.

Jimmy Smits seems all wrong for it. Sure, he’s age appropriate, but Smits has a very “contemporary” look about him that makes him stick out in a period piece. Some actors just don’t look right when transported to settings other than the present or very near-past (he’d be fine in a drama taking place in the 1960s or even 1930s…sort of like Robert De Niro, who doesn’t belong in costume dramas, and in direct opposition to Sean Bean, who I’m convinced sleeps in Elizabethan garb.)

Alexander Siddig is a nice choice. He has that great, pensive air about him, his coloring is right for it, he’s a terrific actor. Is his presence so enormous that you’d immediately want to know everything about him as I think this role requires? Perhaps. Doran’s going to have to be somewhat sketched in (he’s sketched in in the books *anyway*), so it’s the actor’s presence that needs to do a lot of work here. He’s also 48, so he’s a good age for it.

Irfan Khan might work. Another great understated presence, and contributes to the polyglot nature of Dorne as well. He’s 46 but plays older. Again, I worry there’s not enough there to really draw us in, though his work in The Namesake would suggest otherwise.

Emilio Ecchevaria – I love this guy, if only on the strength of playing “El Chivo” in Amores Perros (for those who saw it, he’s the homeless hit man). He might be too old, but he’s got SUCH presence. I think he could work. He’d blow the damned role away, honestly.

Giancarlo Esposito is a great, great actor. But I find him also to be quite contemporary in appearance. Maybe if you disguise him with a beard, but I don’t see it.

    Just a few names.

Next y’all be picking Lou Diamond Phillips for Khal Pono.

I have to agree with Rygar. I hated him in Dexter and don’t think he could pull off Doran. He doesn’t even look like Doran does (in my imagination, that is).

    Turncloak,
Yeah, that pretty much sums it up. I used my book knowledge/the patterns in the previous seasons for the general outline, and stuff from the set (like leaks, and the episodes actors are confirmed to be in) for some of the final details. The one thing that still vexes me is I remember reading somewhere that the actress that plays Myranda is in more than one episode…

And thank you again, everyone, for the positive feedback :D.

EDIT: Oh, and just for the record I fixed the Dontos thing. Basically I changed the scene in episode 3, then word searched for every occurrence of ‘Dontos’ and changed it to ‘the bard’ :P.

    GreatJon of Slumber,
With Jimmy Smits, didn’t a lot of people have similar complaints for Pedro Pascal? I think it could just come down to how they do his hair and facial hair, as well as the costumes. If you look at photos of Harry Lloyd or Miltos Yerolemou you wouldn’t think they would fit in a medieval costume drama, but they ended up fitting perfectly. Nice run-down of the candidates though, even if I don’t agree.

    Ser Tahu,

Your comparison doesn’t make a whole lot of sense.

The reason why the PW in S3x10 didn’t make sense was that it is an “inciting incident”. The event doesn’t bring any closure: it starts the plot. Hence why you don’t put that at the end of your season and why you save it for the very beginning of the next one.

Tyrion killing Tywin is a climax. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that event taking place in episode 8.. since you need to have some sort of resolution after your climax.. a resolution that could then happen in episode 10.

Funny how Tim Curry sans Satan make up looks exactly as Doran should.

But if I can’t have him then at least give me W. Earl Brown as Khal Pono. Imagine his first meeting with Dany and he greets her with “Have you seen my Weiner?” wearing his Something About Mary ear muffs!

Just the look that Tywin gives Tyrion after “Wherever whores go”…right before Tyrion loses it and raises the crossbow, and letting the bolt fly…..”I guess Tywin doesn’t shit gold, after all” could perfectly end the season for me. But of course, so many other “killer” events need to happen as well.
    This is THE season.

Well, yes, but no. Pedro Pascal has an advantage by being an unknown commodity – I liked his look as soon as I saw him. Smits had a big career on NYPD Blue and a number of well-known US TV shows, and he has, as said, a very contemporary way about him that I believe would stick out noticeably.

    Tyrion Pimpslap,

He would be my choice too. Or Ben Kingsley.

My guess is that the Dornish will be portrayed with British accents which Pascal, despite being American raised, should likely be able to do. The rest of the Dornish casting, Indira Varma and the guy playing “Lord Blackstone”, are both British raised. This would keep Westeros consistent accent-wise.

I’m sure they will make Doran very distinctive with his gout, because they like to make new characters shockingly memorable (a la Selyse with her dead babies).

I think Tyrion killing Tywin and Shae in Episode 8 will cause a disappointment for the end of the ninth episode even though the battle will be spectacular, it’s the biggest moment of the season IMO (series, for Tyrion’s fans ?) because Tywin is better in the show than in the books same for Shae and Dinklage IS Tyrion.

Episode 10, no one will saw it coming after these two amazing episodes in a row.
Look at Mhysa, the majority of people was complaining that it was uneventful. (I personally enjoyed it a lot, great finale with a somewhat cheesy ending, but the scene was not as bad as everyone said.)

And man…I still believe that the finale will be the best episode of the series so far if it’s going to play out like I think it will.

Once again sorry guys if my English is not perfect.

    Arthur,

As I said above, Abyss‘s Joffrey gif http://i.minus.com/ibeZ2KqID4kTBj.gif may well show Oberyn (the man in red with black hair with his back to the camera) strolling between the juggler and the man on stilts.

This is a stretch but I notice a similarity between the look of this costume and the one from this http://wicnet.tumblr.com/image/57634786081 picture (fellow drinking coffee with hair, hairline and brow like Pedro).

Once again. A stretch, yes. An overanalysis, yes. But well. Why not.

    Ozymandias,

    Tyrion Pimpslap,

Its probably an extra, but because that shot features Joffrey, Sansa, the QoT and maybe even Jaime (the Kingsguard it pans to could be him), I think the PW will be directed like Tyrion and Sansa’s wedding and go from scenes between some main characters to scenes between others seamlessly. The camera would go from one area to another and have several of the main cast in the background while others are featured and then pan to the next group of people.

I kinda think we might have a glimpse of that in an In-Production video if they interview Pedro. But if we ever get these, it wont be before mid-January, I’d wager.
