MGoT: Across the Narrow Sea
By Winter Is Coming on in Filming.

A new Making Game of Thrones post has gone up today, in which Cat Taylor describes the excitement and exhaustion that comes with filming with multiple units in multiple countries.

While we did cut Morocco out of the schedule and reduce our country count to three, that hasn’t stopped us from establishing a new show record. Thanks to the splinter units, we actually managed to film four separate episodes simultaneously. That’s two directors, filming separate episodes in two different countries, all on the same day.

What’s it take to become such masters of efficiency? Caffeine, sugar … and every AD available in Northern Ireland.

Read the full post over at MakingGameofThrones.com.

Winter Is Coming: Chalk up another impressive feat of filming logistics for this talented crew. The whole operation is like a well-oiled machine now.

Having seen the Belvedere Ampitheatre (Trial-by-combat arena) and Gradac Park (PW reception) sets, It feels like there’s still many things being kept back for future seasons. I wonder if they have tentatively picked locations for events in King’s Landing, Essos, and presumably Oldtown and Braavos that are a couple of season’s away? It’s a shame they don’t have the budget to film in other countries. Spain was considered before Croatia for example (Water Gardens maybe?).

    Davy,

I thought exactly the same, but then i remebered that the city inside the walls of Dubrovnik is also called Old Town. Besides, the westerosi city is called Oldtown, a single word, not Old-Town, and in the same sentence she referred also to the hotel that they redressed as the place where the trial by combat will take place.

    Valyrian Plastic,

I’ve always wondered what location will they use as Braavos. The city is basically a fantasy Venice, but using Venice as location would be too literal and also too costly. Not only that, but Oldtown is also a city full of canals and bridges, so they need to find not one but two distinctive cities with canals so people don’t get lost between the two.
Now, Dorne is a little bit simpler. I’ve always pictured Sunspear like the Alhambra, so they could film there. That fortress has already been used by movies before, and the exteriors could be filmed in Almeria (one of the few deserts in Europe).

I assume they’ll try to film most of their temperate locations in Croatia from now on. I’m sure they could find a good Dorne and a good Braavos there without too much trouble.

    Bannerless Bro,

I love the internal you chose for Sunspear, but dislike the external. The city isn’t supposed to look like a standard Westerosi castle. It’s actually more like a Sultan’s Palace surrounded by three high walls. I presume much of that will be CGI anyway, so any place with sandy dunes and a green screen will be perfect for Sunspear.

    Bannerless Bro,

There was an episode of Doctor Who in new season 5 called “Vampires in Venice” which was filmed in another medieval Croatian city called Trogir (as was a Vincent Van Gogh episode that same season set in 19th century Provence). Maybe there’s a possibility.

On an unrelated note, I’ve been looking at locations on Flickr in Corsica which may be a good stand-in for Casterly Rock (though I doubt we’ll ever see it). I know it was inspired by Gibraltar but this would probably be a cheaper option. Needs some CGI of course, but it seems to fit the bill nicely.

I’m not sure what these places could be (bearing in mind they’ll probably never film there anyway)

I think they have to be in ‘striking’ distance of Belfast…. but that seems to be Western Europe, North Atlantic and North Africa.

Boy! The Alhambra would be perfect , almost would not need much VFX there!

I don’t know what Spain’s Cinema tax break is these days, Spain , like many in that area is hurting economically… one would have access to first class cinema resources. (I would love to see Guillermo del Toro or even Alfonso Cuarón do an episode of GOT , but I don’t think they will ever be available, one wonders how compliant de Toro would be, he has a wild imagination.)

I love Braavos, in my mind’s eye, my favorite visual artifice (after the WALL) in ASOIAF. So rich in texture and cultural history.
Yeah Venezia would be perfect and lends itself to CGI modification, and it’s also , seemly about the size of Braavos (so is Amsterdam, but that’s out)… alas you are right, way too expensive , even if Italy is in almost as bad a shape as Spain.

I am thinking Bruges Belgium, small , but a flabbergast of a place, like ‘old town’ in Dubrovnik with canals . It would CGI VFX right smart!
Alas, I would bet , once again, too expensive….
One could almost take any Dubrovnik-like setting and CGI it….

I want see what they do, Braavos is a Sirens-call for any art director, production designer and cinematographer.

And where the spot where Pycelle begs Tywin to restore his place on the small council in the season 3 deleted scene (which was apparently re-written and filmed for season 4, I might be wrong). The location will probably re-appear anyway, as Pile Gate and Fort Lovrijanec have appeared in both seasons 2 & 3 as well.

It doesn’t appear that any actors are in that snap either, nor is it clear where the camera’s meant to be focused. At first I thought it was on that narrow walkway below the houses, but it appears to be one of the monitors instead. Now that would require some serious acting skills. You’d have to remember your lines and also, not fall in! Maybe it’s where Dontos whisks away Sansa to after the wedding.

White harbour, merge King’s landing and old town or Sunspear/Watergardens/Old Town. Besides this only Braavos is really needed they can move what happens in Volantis & Pentos to Braavos I suppose. That is three new locations.

That’s conveniant… But I doubt they will merge Pentos with Braavos else the planted seed of Illirio and Varys in season 1 woukd be fruitless. Merging Sunspear and Oldtown is a little more plausible, but it might cause problems later on. Only GRRM and D&D&BC know THAT though. A merge of Volantis and Braavos makes no sense to me, as you only really need a couple of sets in Volantis and they can be filmed in the same location as Braavos without fucking up the book canon.

    Patchy Face,

We should get a teaser for the date they’re planning to drop the trailer, now wouldn’t that just take the biscuit. We should get a 4 minute epic like The Walking Dead brings out every Summer at Comic-Con with the time they’ve had to piece one together.

    Valyrian Plastic,

    Those locations look rad.
BTW, take a look at this:

This would make a perfect location for The Arsenal.
    I also found this:

I can see the Titan there.

    Lord Davos,

IMHO looks too northern european to be Oldtown. But this:
    http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/2b/00_Bruges_JPG6.jpg
looks quite like how I pictured White Harbor.

Pretty cool, and it shouldn’t be too hard to photo shop the mountains, but for that damn hotel, Grrrrrr! When I think of the Titan I see it as being just as impressive as the Argonath on the approach Amon Hen, so my expectations are pretty high at the moment. It shouldn’t be too hard to build a set for the streets of Braavos in the Paint Hall. It’s mostly alleys and narrow waterfronts anyway and the House of Black & White will have to be entire a studio set I imagine, it’s probably too extraordinary to just add an Ebony/Wierwood door to an existing building.

White Harbour will probably be studio-based work as well, though as it’s a northern port town it does put me in mind of Newcastle or Aberdeen. Wood and dark grey stonework with richer materials used for the Manderly’s abode, and even then something quite simple in design compared to the colourful structures of King’s Landing or Qarth. There could be an establishing shot done with CGI just to show that this is a busy port city with a quarter-million residents.

Somebody mentioned Bruges being a possible suitable setting for Braavos. I passed though Bruges many years ago and it is a fascinating city, but if HBO were to use it as a location for GoT I hope they would prove rather more careful about their continuity than the people behind the (in my opinion ghastly, but I know folks who disagree with me) “White Queen”. I’m posting the link to a review that pointed out some of the bloopers. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-2346670/This-White-Queen-travesty-Your-Majesty-Why-howlers-like-concrete-steps-metal-railings-rubber-boots-turning-TVs-new-period-drama-laughing-stock.html

This is off-topic but as Peter O’Toole passed recently I wonder if we will have some of his old films on TV this Christmas. If so, the 2005 version of “Lassie” has Peter Dinklage as an Irish traveller who interacts with the canine heroine. It’s not a bad film for kids though if anyone gets it out for the kiddiwinks they may need to watch it with them because one of the dogs gets killed. Edit: I tried to put in a “spoiler alert” there but it doesn’t seem to have worked. Mr Dinklage’s American accent came through once or twice but on the whole I thought he did credibly. Mind you, I’m not one of the British people who moan about his Tyrion accent. At one point in the Lassie film Mr D’s character says he has to go south because winter is coming!
Back on topic, I’ve never been to Dubrovnik but from the pictures it looks a really attractive town (though of course they aren’t going to show any skyscrapers there may have been built in the newer parts of the town in GoT, says she stating the obviousl.

    bon,

That actually looks really awesome. I never thought I would want them to shoot Dorn in Poland but that castle is perfect.

To everyone wishing we could have Bruges as Braavos…don’t get me wrong, Bruges is a really cool-looking city, but it also looks very northern-European, with very steep-pitched roofs (the better to shed snow from, my dear) and the buildings jammed as close together as possible. I always pictured Braavos and Pentos as being more southern-European in terms of architecture. I know Braavos is halfway between KL and Winterfell in terms of latitude, but since it’s on the water I think the climate is much closer to KL. I really want more of a Mediterranean/Adriatic look for Braavos, so I personally hope they stay in Croatia.

I live in Newcastle and the only bit on the waterfront is the quayside, which is all lights and bridges and tall buildings, but most of the city centre away from the river has grand old buildings, so maybe

But I guess I see White Harbour getting the Riverrun treatment really, I don’t think it’ll get external shots, especially since Davos’ meeting and imprisonment, and release can only really last two episodes

While it’s mostly “Pod the Rod” banter, he does go on to say at the end that he and Gwendoline won’t be having any scenes in Iceland this season. When they said it I thought they meant the British supermarket brand, that was terribly confusing.

    Greenjones,

    Tyrion Pimpslap,

But he never had to reveal anything important. He must know from being involved in such a huge, anticipated show as GOT would result in tons of speculation from sneaky photos taken at a distance. I think in the months since the shoot he would’ve had time to come up with something that didn’t give away any spoilers to the unsullied but may have some meaning to the readers.

Who knows, right now even interviews filmed weeks ago are the best places to turn to, especially these ones. Who else do you want them to get ahold of in the run-up to season 4? (Who hasn’t yet been featured) I’d pick Francis Magee, Jerome Flynn, Owen Teale, Kerry Ingram, Paul Kaye and I’d want Dame Diana Rigg in that selection too (but that may be too much to ask for with her status).

Nikolaj was definitely on the balcony above the red tent in Pic 13 in his travel coat (that’s quite a departure from the book surely), and someone who appeared to be Conleth or Roger (Mace Tyrell) was just inside the tent in a yellow and cream robe.

But there are people in the shot who are holding 21st century umbrellas and men with T-shirts on! How are they going to appear on the screen? And are they really going to show the boom mic? They’re ruining the show! They’ve added in time-travel! Jerks!

I will say, though, that the costuming in that scene looks perfect. I mean, we’ve seen Gregor before, so what he’s wearing is consistent. But RV looks great. It’s smaller, lithe, covers key areas (shoulders) but doesn’t constrict him, which is the whole point.
