Game of Thrones returns on April 6, trailer coming Sunday
By Winter Is Coming on in News.

S4 Premiere DateHBO has announced the premiere date for season 4 of Game of Thrones. April 6th, 2014 is the day that Thrones will return to our TV screens.

And that’s not all. HBO has also announced that the first official trailer for season 4 will air this Sunday at 8:55 PM ET, prior to the series premiere of True Detective. Yes, you read that right, first official trailer. Not teaser. According to HBO it will be “the first extended look at the new season and features new characters and episodic footage.”

As usual, the trailer will go up online immediately afterwards and we will have it here for your viewing pleasure. But we may not have to wait that long as James Hibberd has promised a glimpse of the trailer even sooner than that. Keep it locked here for more updates on that front.

Winter Is Coming: Time to get that countdown clock up!

I’m betting its one of those teasers. Voice over of a major character, with some music and brief touching of major themes of the season. They usually release one or two of those before a proper trailer.

I’m not surprised. When they bumped off their most popular character, the writing was on the wall. They weren’t planning on sticking around much longer. I don’t think it means anything for GoT though. BE has prestige but it’s never interfered with GoT, because it doesn’t bring in what GoT does, popularity and merchandise-wise. I doubt the GoT budget would be really affected either since they already spend so much.

Do you honestly believe, as a GOT fan, that killing off popular characters means a story is coming to an end?

Personally, I think the show started slow but got better each season (especially after season 2. I thought Jimmy dragged the show down). And there’s so much potential story left to tell! Seasons 3 and 4 were my favourite, so it’s sad news for me, but oh well.

I wouldn’t say they were running out of story (like you said, they could have focused on historical figures like Al freaking Capone!). But it DID feel like they weren’t really sure where to go with the fictional characters. It’s felt like that since the beginning, to me. Less story driven, and more of an exploration of the period and setting.

Yeah, 6 sounds about right to me.

I wonder if they were influenced by Breaking Bad stopping at 5 (or 5 and a half)? It seems like the idea, with Breaking Bad, was to stop while they were still excellent rather than risk letting it go on too long, and lose viewers and interest. It worked well for Breaking Bad, but I think Boardwalk Empire still had some room to grow.

I like it when shows go out at the top of their game rather than run on fumes. If it was announced as the final season, it’s probably not because of ratings but because the creators felt like they had a good stopping point.

But I thought season 4 of BE was the strongest yet. Loved that season to death. Richard and Chalky got the screen time they deserved but haven’t been getting all this time.

Both seasons 1 and 2 premiere in April not sure why every kept thinking season 4 would be March 30th. I’ve seen a bunch of fake fan ads saying the premiere would be March 30th. The only reason season 3 was in March instead of April was because the marketing team liked the way 3/31/13 looked on a poster.

It means nothing for GoT. The ratings for BE have been falling ever since it premiered, and aside from S4 (which was fantastic) I can see why. What I find interesting here is that HBO is losing both BE and True Blood next year. They will have a lot of space to fill now when. It comes to dramas, and I bet they are starting to regret turning away American Gods and The Dark Tower.

Anyway, it’s nice to see the date finally made official. I’ve had the feeling for a whole now that it wouldn’t be the 30th of March. Now I’m not sure what I’m looking forward to more; S4 or the casting/filming period for S5 (where so many questions about adapting AFfC/ADwD will be answered).

Boardwalk Empire’s facebook post is flooded with angry/sad/disappointed comments. I feel bad for die-hard Boardwalk Empire fans. I see a lot of people saying that they’re cancelling their HBO subscription (especially in addition to True Blood ending). I wonder what new shows HBO has in the works?

It’s also a bit of a sobering reminder: HBO has cancelled great shows in the past and who really knows just how far they’ll take GOT? Personally, everything after Season 4 is a giant question mark for me. I know they’ve hinted at 7 (or 8), but we can never really know.

Then again, when GOT was in development I always said I’d be happy if we got at least ONE full season! Ideally 3 (up to the Red Wedding). Anything after that was always a bonus, to me.

I’m not sure how it was “clear” that the show would be ending with the death of Richard Harrow, and would argue that the show has gotten better every single season. There is plenty of story left to tell in that universe, honestly. Still, the show was always about the rise of organized crime and not its heyday, so I’m not too surprised to hear that it will be ending with the fifth season. With Capone firmly in control of Chicago, I’d expect the final season to highlight the diminished importance of Atlantic City and the rise of Lanskey & Luciano in New York.

Ultimately, though, it has nothing to do with Game of Thrones on any level. Word is that Mick Jagger, Martin Scorsese, Terrence Winter, and George Mastras (of Breaking Bad fame) are working on (and have been for quite some time) an untitled rock & roll series set in the late 1970’s, starring Bobby Cannavale. Since many of those involved are also integral to the making of Boardwalk Empire, it seems to me that this decision was made as all involved were ready to move on.

Given that they’ve been notified well in advance, I’m expecting the same top-notch story-telling and character work that we’ve gotten for the past four seasons, and for the show to go out with a bang. Better than taking it the Showtime route, I’d say.

Why would it mean anything for GoT? Boardwalk Empire ratings and buzz has gone down each season and for GoT it’s the opposite. I’m pretty sure even Terrence Winter is getting bored with it so they’re ending it after 5 seasons, it means nothing for Game of Thrones.

I think that the main reason that the premiere is April 6th this year is to get out of the way of The Walking Dead finale on March 30th. With the way the other HBO shows wrap up right before this, March 30th appeared to be the date that originally made the most sense as well as being the same premiere date as last season.

But on March 30th last year, they ran in direct competition (at 9PM) to The Walking Dead finale and I think it hurt that episode’s ratings as well as its buzz (which is probably more important to HBO than straight ratings). The Walking Dead is now one of the most watched shows on television and this season is drawing even more than last one. Letting the finale have it’s night and then starting GoT on April 6th with the night to themselves makes a lot more sense.

And that really is Boardwalk Empire’s biggest weakness, in my opinion – the constant reboots of characters between seasons. There never was any sense of direction – let alone a game plan – beyond a single season’s story arc. It really ruined the show for me, despite my love for the setting.

GoT is the flagship show on HBO now and its biggest cash cow. The buzz and ratings have increased every season which is exactly the opposite scenario of a show like Boardwalk Empire.

If anything, the end of both True Blood and Boardwalk Empire means HBO needs GoT more than ever for the next few years until they are able to launch their next flagship shows. Their business runs on subscriptions and they need quality and buzzworthy shows to maintain that subscription base. GoT is the lynchpin to them achieving this.

Why do you assume HBO is canceling it? The show has had a fine run, I’m pretty sure Terrence Winter wants it to end anyway. Breaking Bad also had 5 seasons but no one refers to it as being canceling it or complains to AMC. Not every show needs to go on for 7-9 seasons.

April 6 makes a lot of sense, especially ratings wise. This way, if they have to skip Memorial Day, the gap is between 7 and 8, which would allow the awesomeness in 8 to bump numbers for 9 and build hype; and if the do air on MD, it won’t be 9 taking the numbers hit.

This way the numbers for 10 should be awesome, and we completely avoid BE territory.

  66. Khal-A-Bunga

    cosca,

Not necessarily. Winter and the rest of the writers made a point to tie Dr. Narcisse to Masseria, so I would expect that to tie into the end-game. As far as Chalky goes, his place in the series has certainly become more prominent with season four, but that doesn’t mean his conflict with Dr. Narcisse will be integral to the story line going forward. It may tie in somehow, but I don’t think it’s strictly necessary.

The more I think about it, the more I’m comfortable with the decision to bring it to an end with the fifth season. As amazing as the show is, I’d rather see what else these writers and producers have up their sleeve. As far as what replaces it in that time slot… I don’t think it will be Winter’s new show, but rather the new David Milch series, The Money, which will likely premiere in the 10:00 P.M. time slot alongside the final season of Boardwalk.

The network has a ton of promising series’ in development right, including the aforementioned, so I don’t think they’ll be hurting for a new show to take its place (like they were with the cancellation of Milch’s previous show, the massively under-appreciated Luck).

I doubt that, HBO never greenlight American Gods for a good reason, I don’t see it working as a TV show, maybe as a movie but I don’t see it as an HBO TV show. The Dark Tower on HBO was always just a rumor, that show was never really in development at HBO. They already have a few more genre shows lined up like The Leftovers and a JJ Abrams produced Scifi show based on the movie Westworld.

I never said they were cancelling it. I only referred to the fact that HBO has cancelled shows in the past. But apparently this was a decision made by the creative team of BE.

Nor am I saying it’s bad for GOT. I just asked what it means, for GOT, if anything? Good, bad, or no effect at all, I’m just asking what people think.

    Lex,

I think if it has any effect at all it will be that HBO will cling that much tighter to GOT. I’d be worried about GOT getting canceled if HBO had something that competed with it ratings and money wise. Even then, though, as long as GOT keeps driving in the revenue they’ll be fine to go as long as they want.

I see that my iPhone changed some details in my comment. How annoying…

    JamesL,
I’ve never actually read American Gods, I was just going off its reputation. As for The Dark Tower (which I also haven’t read), they were talking about doing three movies with Warner (who own HBO), with a tv season on HBO between each movie. So although HBO themselves never passed on it, their parent company did. I really want them to give it the GoT treatment and just make a tv series out of it, but I fear that it is too similar to Westworld, which is currently in development at HBO.

    Turncloak,
I always forget about that one, but last I heard it was still just in the early stages of development.

Can anyone think of any other dramas that HBO currently has in development? The only ones I can think of are Westworld, Monster and The Spark.

Well, there was that cool idea (Khal-A-Bunga’s perhaps?) about moving GoT to BE’s timeslot for Season 5, giving the show several additional months of production time, enough to make it a 12-13 episode season. Ideal for covering the majority of Feast and Dance in a single season.

    I’ve heard the opposite.
A morning radio show that I listen to daily has a call-in chat with Andy Greenwald from Grantland about once a month. He’s that site’s “television guy.” He’s written an article about True Detectives after having the opportunity to watch the first three episodes:
    http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/10259553/matthew-mcconaughey-woody-harrelson-hbo-true-detective

    King Tommen,

Although I suspect GOT can go as long as they want, it isn’t a given. There is precedence for HBO being penny pinchers for their most popular and profitable shows. Sopranos was off for almost 2 full calendar years between season 4 and 5 because they didn’t want to pay Gandolfini, and also actually wanted to slash the budget by 50% and fire some of the cast members. And at that point in the early 2000s The Sopranos made more money for HBO in 4 years than it had made in it’s entire 25+ year existence. If they were willing to do it then…

I’d be careful in thinking it’s a given they can do what they want given the massive success. HBO is cheap as hell and has ruined a good thing in the past.

Essentially, I’m with you on this. I could see American Gods working as a tv show, but there’s only enough material for one season, and they’d need to make the lead character WAY more interesting than he was in the book. And the Dark Tower…well, I liked it and the ending a lot, more than most people at any rate, but that’s a can of worms I’m not sure TV can pull off.

I’m so excited!!! My stomach’s clenching just thinking about the new footage. I’m betting the “new characters” portion will be given up to the Viper and how could that possibly be disappointing? Maybe some Sansa/Alayne/Vale footage as well, but perhaps that’s too wishful of thinking, hm?

I’m surprised they’re releasing footage this early? HBO seems to be putting GoT in the forefront, giving the promos all they’ve got. I’m betting on none of the CGI being done yet, so it’ll most likely be a brief glimpse of characters faces with some menacing voiceover (come on Aiden Gillen, let’s hear the creepy voice again!).

Poor Isaac Hempstead Wright. I feel so bad for Bran fans. His name’s not listed in the main actors’ lineup, but that doesn’t mean he won’t appear more this season! I’m crossing my fingers.

The HBO bigwigs have said it can run as long as there are stories to tell. There are no guarantees in life, but GoT’s business is massive, and it brings in tons of dough. Boardwalk Empire is a good, good show, and this season it was very good because it finally focused on its most interesting characters (Chalky and Richard Harrow) with a good solid dose of Eli and Al Capone, and left the less interesting types, like Luciano, off-screen. It’s also debatable (spoilers) how long they can drag out Nucky’s “I want out” thing – as a person who tends to want to be a peacekeeper, he’s a much more reactive character than Tony Soprano or Al Swearengen.

In a sense, it’s what makes GoT so good: Eddard Stark was a stalwart, steady man and a good father, but until he started to figure out the story of Robert’s bastards, he too was a reactive man put in a difficult situation. The only logical place for such a person is either transformed into a more compromised type who does harsh things (like Daenarys or Robert Baratheon), or dead.

Nucky’s just not much of an active character, and Buscemi, who is very good, plays him as such. It seems logical, to get one more blowout year with Dr. Narcisse, Chalky, Daughter, Eli, Van Alden and Capone.

I am guessing and hoping that this is a sign that the GoT season 4 premier will run over the 60min normal timeslot. Maybe we will get a 70-80min season opener? I hope so!!! I bet on April 13th ‘Silicon Valley’ is set for a 10:00PM airing…

I hope we get more info as to why it was canceled. I totally understood and agreed with TB being canned but BE was high quality and had some respect amoung the TV serious world…

This makes me nervous for GoT if HBO decides to just shut something down like that.

Yeah. It’s kind of f* up that HBO clearly is biased toward some cast members. Bran almost never show up in any trailer despite being a main character. His story also got completely butchered and had barely screentime. It’s a shame cause kid’s a great actor, better than most adult in the show.

I’m guessing it has to do with the main actors contracts. There’s enough historical gangster material left to mine that they could easily do 3 more seasons. The writers have done a stellar job with the material they’ve used already, so I can’t fathom it’s a problem on the creative side …must be the talent.

Excellent show. I’m disappointed…was hoping it would last longer.

The Reeds were non-characters and literally came out of nowhere; Coldhands was missing; The dreams consist of Bran and Jojen exchanging glances; Knight of the laughing tree story was missing. His scenes look like they were done by a 3rd or 4th shooting unit and with a script written by the writer in 5 minutes in his spare time. The only redeeming factor is bran himself.
Hopefully they’re just saving them for season 4.

    Brock,

I’m kind of inclined to think that the Knight of the Laughing Tree will be this season, as likely will be Coldhands. I’m pretty positive about the former; I don’t want to get my hopes up about the latter, but it seems plausible given details about an episode/episodes showing the Nights Watch deserters

Also, I disagree with the other stuff, but as a general point, the show not showing a scene yet is not the same thing as them cutting it or “butchering it”.

    Jordan,

If that’s true then he’s gonna need so much more screen time than last season. This including the relationship between the Reeds and house Stark, KOTLT story, his foreshadowing dreams, Coldhands, all on top of his ADWD story. As the successor of the King in the North Bran should inherit the screen time left by his brother after he died.

More Bran and less Tyrion. Bran is the most interesting POV character in the books. I can’t believe D&D have underutilized such an entertaining character. Clearly GRRM knew to give him enough chapters, as evidenced by his 4 chapters in ASOS and 3 chapters in ADWD.

    Tyrion Pimpslap,

    Not sure if sarcastic.

I mean I certainly wouldn’t have a problem with less Tyrion (there seemed to be too much Tyrion last season, and not really the best scenes), but not sure I’d consider Bran anywhere near the most interesting character.

Now I’d certainly like to see more Bran this season (and Hodor!), but as far as the book goes, I’d consider Tyrion’s chapters much more interesting than Bran’s.

Edit- From your edit, I’m guessing sarcastic.

I agree there’s ALWAYS to much Tyrion for my taste. I mean I like the character and Peter is great but IMO Tyrion kind of sucks up a lot of screentime.

I would love to see more Bran!

IMO and my personal belief is that Bran becomes the most powerful character in the books, he literally becomes somewhat of a nature god.

I also believe, as I said before that Bran will become like a Darth Vader, he is just a kid that had everything he loved taken from him. I think he will use his powers for blind vengeance and need to be stopped. I also think he will Worg into one of Dany’s Dragons and force the other two to kill it before all is said and done.

There is no doubt that Bran’s importance in the series is of huge consequence and D&D should respect that a little more then they have.

    Tyrion Pimpslap,

Not that Bran’s storyline is super compelling or anything (I found some of his chapters a bore to read), but his companions and overall journey needs to be kept tabs on through the season and I feel like they might be a bit behind with him? But they’ll probably make a bunch of progress this season… I’m hoping?

I’m really eager to see if Meera talks about Harrenhal. Enter some history highways. Bring on the first generation of wolf siblings.

I agree. As has been the case up to now, I doubt we’re going to see many detailed prophetic visions or flashbacks, but the show loves (s)exposition, and since Bran and co. are always walking, I guarantee we are going to get some backstory out of it.

One other thing- I know it is a budgetary issue, but to the extent possible, I’d like to see more direwolf detail among the remaining Starks/direwolves.

I wonder how Bran will actually learn how to use the weirnet and engage his warging skills to make a real difference? Is Bloodraven going to teach him? After reading The Mystery Knight, one discovers that Bloodraven is one seriously fucked up individual and he carried out his role as HotK fairly harshly. Is the current well-rooted Bloodraven really going to be a good teacher for Bran or will he show him a darker path? I find that aspect of Bran’s journey to be extremely interesting.

Yay! Great news…finally the coundown clock will get under way again! It seems far now, but you’ll see the time will pass quite fast. Plus, what a treat, we get a full trailer plus the premiere to a show I think will be a great one. “True Detective” will follow the “American Horror Story” format, that each subsequent season the series will have a different cast, different director, story and setting (at least that is what I understood). The first season has 8 episodes, and I think they will stick to that format.

Plus lets not forget that “The Leftovers” is premiering later on this year. That show has the potential to become another hit for HBO.

As for the premiere date, I’m glad they pushed it up to April 6, like that I’ll have the priviledge to end winter with “The Walking Dead” and start spring with “Game Of Thrones”…what more can one ask for?!

As for “Boardwalk Empire” ending, it was not cancelled at all. Below is the link to an article which mentions “Game Of Thrones”, “Silicon, Valley” “Veep”, and also that Terrence Winter and his team decided that this would be the last season for “Boardwalk Empire”. And if you think about it, it makes sense. The later years of the Prohibition era have been already been covered plenty in several series, movies etc., including “The Untouchables”. We haven’t really had a series that covered the first years of the Prohibition era. And given the way the fourth season unfolded I think it makes perfect sense that the show would wind down.

While I’m not ready to say that HBO won’t cancel series from now on, I think that they’ve learned from the days of “Carnivale” and “Deadwood”. With “Luck” being cancelled after only one season, “True Blood” and “Boardwalk Empire” ending, HBO will have quite the slate to fill. “Game Of Thrones” will become its staple show, until and unless the new shows , “True Detective” and “The Leftovers” can fill that void. But even so, after all these years. I don’t take anything for granted with GoT! I still hold my breath each and every time the show is due for renewal! I keep my fingers crossed that we get a full run and the entire story is told!

Oh and by the way, “Girls” was renewed for a fourth season as well.

For the future, I smell some large project on the way for HBO. AT least a miniseries of some sorts…think about it we haven’t really had a large scale miniseries ever since the days of “The Pacific”, “Generation Kill” and “John Adams” respectively.

Below is the article I mentioned:

I managed to catch up on my reading of the Song of Ice and Fire – still not completely done, but I will say (in general terms as I can’t get the spoiler hider to work) that I was kind of disappointed that it was taking so long for a couple of the strands of the story (I won’t say which characters they relate to) to develop. But I’m hooked now and I want to know where it all ends (I know Mr Martin still has to complete the full series of books). I can’t help wishing Mr Martin will not be too tardy in finishing the book series. He is financially secure and not a struggling writer of course so I guess he doesn’t have to write them because he needs the money.

The Beeb did a dramatisation in about 1997 of a nineteenth century novel “Wives and Daughters” by Mrs Gaskell (who died before finishing the book but fortunately she had told a friend how it ended, so that was mentioned at the end of the novel). The dramatist wrote an ending according to Mrs Gaskell’s revelations which worked well on the TV show. (I wonder if there are any other UK citizens of my generation who visit this website who would remember the Tony Hancock comedy episode about “The Last Page” which was about someone who found that the last page of the thriller they were reading had been torn out and about the lengths he went to in order to find out “who done it”?)

As I said on a previous thread I am somewhat puzzled by the fact that the movers and shakers behind GoT have been very stinting (until now) with information on Season 4 casting, especially as much of what they were keeping quiet about seems to have been available on the resumes of the actors concerned. I don’t have Sky so I won’t be able to see the trailer [unless it is migrated to WiC] – still not sure if I’ll be able to watch the new season at a friend’s house or if I’ll have to wait for the DVDs. Now that will be a long wait ….

    House Mormont,

Oh ok. Thanks. I can’t say that I am very familiar with “American Horror Story”. I’ve been at most an ocasional viwer catching bits and pieces of single episodes, and since it seemed that there was a different setting each season, and I wasn’t seeing the same actors, save Jessica Lange, in subsequent seasons, I got the impression that the cast was changing with each pasing season…

Well let’s hope that the format they have in mind for “True Detective” works, because it will be a though act to follow McConnaughey and Harrelson. McConnaughey has really transformed himself from bromance douchebag, to an actual actor, whose movies are actuall interesting. He started out promising enough with movies like “A Time To Kill” and “Contact” (and even “EDTV” with his old buddy Harrelson). but then he llost his way with ridiculous movies in general and horrible romantic commedies…in particular, but now with “Mud”, “The Peperboy”, “Magic Mike”, “The Dallas Buyers Club” and even his small but eye-openning role in “The Wolf Of Wall Street”…he is back in a major way.

As for Harrelson, I don’t remember him ever sucking?!?! LOL! I really hope “True Detective” is a hit, because sure as shit it looks really, really good and interesting!

With “The Killing” ending, there aren’t really any good, solid police dramas on TV (and no “Criminal Minds”, “CSI” and “Blue Bloods” doesn’t count!!!). Over on FX, “The Bridge” is interesting, but I have not seen their newest drama, “The Tunnel,” just yet…

So “True Detective” is it for me…to tie me over until GoT Season Four premieres!

    cosca,

Where did you hear that? I do feel that Season 5 won’t be as action packed as the previous seasons because if they’re only using the first half of AFFC and ADWD side by side, sure there’ll be some great material but there won’t be a massive climax moment like the Red Wedding.

    loco73,

“The ‘Tunnel” is actually a British-French version (which adheres remarkably faithfully to the Scandinavian original) of the Danish-Swedish “The Bridge” – except it takes its name from the Channel Tunnel between France and England instead of a Scandinavian bridge. I haven’t seen much of it because it’s on a paid-for channel but Stephen Dillane (GoT’s Stannis) is in it playing a less strait-laced character than Stannis and the actor who plays Uncle Benjen (Joseph Mawle) features in it too. But if you have seen “The Bridge”, there is really nothing vastly different [not that I’ve seen], unless you want to watch “The Tunnel” out of interest to see how they compare. It’s well acted.

    Off topic, but necessary:

This is for people who thought Cat’s speech in S3E2 was a character assassination:

“Catelyn had nothing against this girl [Mya Stone], but she could not help but think of Ned’s bastard at the Wall, and the thought made her angry and guilty, both at once.”
    – Cat, AGOT

Great! We have a date and we will have a trailer!

    UpTopic: I really hope they make 2 seasons out of affc/adwd. at least Tyrion, Jon, Jaime, Cersei, and even the Dornish, and Iron Islanders have material for two season;
Tyrion: 5->until he is kidnapped by Jorah. The Griff mistery is enough of a material for one season. and there are plenty of characters to make a season.
6 -> battle of Meereen include and afterwards: slavery, Penny, the pits in Meereen, first encounter (distant, yes) of Tyrion and Dany, the battle, afterwards.

Dany: 5 -> the whole harpy mistery wich could be concluded here. The troubles of rulling in this season, the dragons imprisonement, and the Daario drama. The decision to marry Hizdahr.
6 -> The Quentin issue, the pits, her flight, her in the Grass Sea, visions (cameos) of Viserys and Drogo.

Jon: 5-> including the dying girl on a horse, the reveal that Melisandre’s interpretation of visions are flawed, the reveal of Mance Ryder not dead. The decision to let the wildlings in.
6 -> the rest, his stabbing of course but they could enter twow material: the aftermath, him being put to rest in an ice cell, Melisandre maybe having a revelation about Jon, etc.

The problems, indeed, are the Stark children: Sansa, Arya and especially Bran. But they can add stuff I guess. Arya’s story has plenty of room for that. Sansa’s story can be moved forward with more material from twow, especially that controversial chapter that was mentioned. while Bran’s story in S6 can be made of visions and stuff; him going inside trees watching Theon, etc.

There is material for 2 seasons. Yes, they have to be calculated and carefull, and they need at least on more writer to help them with the material, but must of all they need to add a fresh mind who knows asoiaf material (another Bryan Cogman, if they can find one).

    Posted January 10, 2014 at 8:35 am | Permalink

    Summer is Coming,

The best way to make the material last is to cut the number of episodes the main characters appear in significantly. 6 or 7 episodes for Arya, Cersei, Tyrion and Jaime etc., rather than 8 or 9. It’s a problem we had last year with Theon’s arc, which only happened because D&D were impressed by work in the previous seasons. Some actors only had 3 or 4 episodes and stayed on the title sequence, whilst some with 6 or 7 stayed back on the black at the end. My comment contributions have all been stuck on repeat lately. If only there was something coming up in the next few days worth talking about.

    Turncloak,

We certainly know Myranda’s returning (most people saying she’ll replace “Kyra and her keys”) and Iwan was the first confirmed secondary character confirmed for season 4, just days after the finale aired. There’s the introduction of Fat Walda, though she & Roose will probably be away from the Dreadfort until the Ironborn siege of Moat Cailin is lifted, even if they have the option of returning by sea. But much as they try to add new savoury elements to his pickle of a plot, there’s no way to hide the sour after-taste (and before-taste and during-taste and so on).

    Turncloak,

You have mentioned torture porn numerous times. I don’t get what you mean by it and why is it bothersome to you?

we don’t read about Theons decline into becomming Reek as it happens in the books, its mostly flashback from what I remember. Which is fine using that medium. Would you rather they cut out Theon for S3 and instead showed him in S4 or S5 already as Reek? I would think that would confuse people.

Its not needing to show the torture. The audience needs to understand how brutal Ramsay is. Are their ways of doing this without visuals? Sure. But nothing drives the point home, or the screw boot for that matter, like a visual.

My biggest problem with that show – other than Stephen Graham, who is awesome as Capone, and of course Michael Stuhlbarg as Rothstein, is that the real-life people get in the way. Their trajectory is no different than their real lives, so I just find myself not caring about them, Luciano in particular, mostly b/c Vincent Piazza portrays him as such a mope. I’d rather have 9 hours of Chalky White sitting on a porch.

    Summer is Coming,

There is material for almost two seasons for only a number of characters. The rest will be well into TWOW by the time the season is over. So all in all, it’s more like 1.5 seasons. Also, I don’t think you can stretch Jon over two seasons without altering things and adding action. I suggest the expansion of Hardhome frequently to end season 5 and initiate season 6’s Wildling arc by having Jon save Tormund and his Wildlings at Hardhome in season 5’s episode 9. Otherwise there just isn’t enough story progression to make two good seasonal arcs, and it would all just be a meandering drag.

Right. You can’t change history. But because we’re dealing with some fiction and some not, I’d rather just have bits and pieces of the real stuff, and Luciano really dragged the show down in Season 2 especially. He barely shows up in the 4th Season, and the show was better for it.

I talked about this a lot in that guest post from a few months back, but I’m in agreement here. There’s a great, strong arc for Cersei/Jon/Dany that can occupy most of Season 5, and then leaving some leftovers for Season 6 well enough – but to stretch to 2 seasons for those 2 books would really be difficult. To me ADwD material probably runs out somewhere around halfway through Season 6 – the latter Barristan/Victarion stuff in particular.

It will be short. I think it’s likely going to be more like season 3’s “The Climb” trailer than a full on one since it’s really early and all the flashy scenes that would normally get shoved into such a trailer are probably not very far into CGI work. I agree with you. That was probably my favorate part last year. We need to see Theon be molded into Reek and The Bastards totatl perversions. US book readers know that even though he said hes reek hes far from where we started off the POV Chapters. Hes not even close to beingthat Reek yet. So we have way more so called “torture porn” left and I am stoked. Plus even as bad as Ramsay seems in the show right now hes still not near as bad as he is in the books yet, IMO.

Most actors contracts are 5 seasons long. Thats a big reason some shows only last about that long. The actors sometimes become too expensive and are lost to the show or a toll gets taken in other parts of production. Luckily it seems that GoT makes quite a bit of money and hopefully can meet the new contracts that will be renegotiated next year.

I’m wondering one little thing, how the hell are they going to put on a quality Trailer in only one month into post-production ?

Post-production begins once they have enough material to start working with, usually a full episode (or most of it). So once they have enough material from, say, Episode 1, they can start doing post on it even if the rest of the season is still filming. So stuff from early in the season is likely already completed, whilst they may still have a few episodes to go. I know in Season 2 they almost tripped over themselves when the CGI for ‘Blackwater’ was only finished two weeks before the episode was delivered, because transmission can caught up with them.

American TV contracts are usually 6 seasons+an option on a seventh (the option is usually a pre-guaranteed moderate pay rise) before a full renegotiation is required. That’s why it’s rare for a show to last longer than seven seasons, and that only happens if the show is an absolute ratings powerhouse (like THE X-FILES, FRIENDS, FRASIER etc) or makes the studio a butt-ton of money. The only show I’ve ever heard of with a five-year contract was BABYLON 5, because it was designed from day one to be a five-season show that had a pre-planned endpoint.

Obviously that only applies to the actors who debuted in Season 1 as well. So Sophie Turner, Maisie Williams, Kit Harington, Emilia Clarke etc will be booked up to Season 7 and will need (possibly expensive) renegotiations to do an eighth season. But Liam Cunningham, Stephen Dillane etc should be covered up to Season 8 by their initial contract.
