HBO releases 5 sneak peeks of the S4 trailer
By Winter Is Coming on in Media.

As Hibberd teased yesterday, HBO has released 5 short snippets of the first official trailer for season 4 of Game of Thrones. These snippets are in the form of 6 second Vine videos. You can see them all at the official Game of Thrones Vine account. We have them all embedded here as well.

Winter Is Coming: The fight looks AMAZING! Can’t wait to see the full trailer.

Looks amazing. A bit spoilery though.

Man, I’m not a huge fan of flashy moves in fight scenes but that Oberyn slide and side flip or whatever it is is FRICKING AWESOME. I hope it flows naturally in the actual fight. When Beric fought the Hound in the Season 3 trailer, he had a flashy fire sword twirl as well which looked a bit unnecessary, but it looked fine in the actual fight. The brief Wall clip seems great and who’s that on the horse?

Okay, we may have to wait until we get the hi-res trailer, but who is sitting in the tent overseeing the Red Viper vs. the Mountain duel? I can see Tywin on the far left, but there are two other mystery men sitting there – one old, one young. The old one doesn’t look like Mace Tyrell, though it could be. Perhaps Kevan? And the young one doesn’t look like Jaime, so I don’t think it’s him.

Actually it could be Jaime. He has short hair in S4 and what he’s wearing looks like that beige coloured thing he wore in S1, so I’d say it’s quite possible that it’s Jaime. But no way to be sure without better quality clips.

    Overwhelmingly excited by these vines!!

I do think it is a spoiler to the unsullied because if it happens like it does in the book, the Red Viper arrives in King’s Landing, makes quiet comments that Dorne still yearns for vengeance for Elia, then he is on the ‘jury’ at Tyrion’s trial so it is an exciting revelation when he offers to fight for him! Or at least, I was surprised. Maybe they won’t do it like that. Perhaps he will come to town specifically for the combat. Who knows. Doesn’t stop me being UBER EXCITED AND MAN HIS SPEAR SKILLS!!!

I really don’t understand the point of Oberyn doing the flip in the air when Gregor is so far away. It seems to just be for show, as he doesn’t seem to be evading any of Gregor’s attacks or leading up to one of his own. Other than that split-second though, it looked good.

  38. King Tommen
    Posted January 10, 2014 at 12:36 pm | Permalink

Is the 2nd clip supposed to be an attack South of the Wall? Is it at Castle Black or a place like Mole’s town which is known to be a setting this season?

If it is indeed the Wildling attack from the South, Tormund being part of the raid indicates that he does not go back over the Wall in between seasons as some have speculated. Looks like the Magnar of Thenn (or at least one of the Thenn’s) is running in front of Tormund.

I’m thrilled at the duel, but I still can’t get over the lack of helms, and it also looked like Oberyn was using his spear in parry rather than a thrust when he could’ve used the latter, and that spear’s probably strong, but not against The Mountain’s greatsword. But then again, looking is not seeing.

Edit: and also, if the Mountain’s fighting one handed, why haven’t they given him a shield for his free hand? At this rate we won’t even have the world’s unluckiest boy either (“Shut the fuck up!”).

In watching the 2nd clip more closely, it appears to be 2 separate scenes. The first with Tormund, a Thenn (possibly the Magnar) and other Wildlings making an attack (I would assume on Castle Black from the South).

Then it cuts to Jon and other NW men fighting (I believe) the NW deserters at Craster’s (the fight is clearly taking place in the woods). So that would be confirmation that Jon does take a small group there early in the season to liberate Grenn and Edd. Guessing there will be yet another near miss with Bran there as well since Bran getting captured there is part of the invented story.

    Bee Beep,

You’re right, of course – I think it’s the hair throwing me off. It just looks too dark to be Jaime. But the more I watch it, the more I’m convinced it is him. Man in the middle is still a mystery, though, as he doesn’t look like Roger Ashton-Griffiths (Mace Tyrell). In behind the scenes photos taken of Mace, he’s rather heavy and bald on top, whereas it appears the man between Jaime and Tywin has hair and isn’t heavy set.

    King Tommen,

The main reason is choreography I imagine, for the same reason neither Sandor nor Gregor wore their helms for their confrontation, and it would have very limited vision even if they had a visorless copy ready for shots taken from behind. It would be like trying to cross the road with the hood up on your raincoat.

Edit: Though if he is wearing a cap at one point, surely that’s worse than no protection (once again, that came out wrong).

They should leave that in. The unlucky boy shows what a monster The Mountain can be. I’ll be pissed if that gets cut out. Martell better get his fucking skull crushed in and not just a sword through the belly. Like the author I’m not a person who condones violence but I like the gruesome truth of combat to be shown. I hated how in the Hunger Games District 12 looked well feed. Should have looked like a Nazi Death Camp. George gets the importance of displaying the ugly truth of war though and I think D&D do too. Alright guys, for those of you interested, I have done some overanalyzing (lol) on the brief and blurry Vine showing Tywin, Jaime, and a third man watching the Red Viper vs. The Mountain duel.

If you look at this behind the scenes photo, you will see the royal tent is held up by three posts. Thus, in the shot in the Vine, we are only seeing half of the tent. I noticed that certain characters who should be watching the duel, such as the Tyrells, are not seen – and I believe they are under the other half of the tent, offscreen. My theory is that the Lannisters are sitting on the right side (their left) of the tent, the Tyrells (and whoever else, Varys? Pycelle?) are under the other side.

I do believe Kevan Lannister may be the man sitting in between Tywin and Jaime. It would make sense, giving his involvement with a certain trial. However, obviously I could be way off base with this. I just can’t come up with anyone else that would be sitting between Jaime and Tywin, except perhaps family, like Kevan.

In the Oberyn vs. Mountain clip the three dudes in the front row of the VIP-box are most definitely Tywin, Mace, Jaime from left to right. Mace is wearing darker colors than in formerly leaked shots but I’m sure it’s him.

Hmm….I wonder. I guess it depends on how they rush Dany’s storyline. When I saw the brief clip, I immediately thought she was pondering the migration to Meereen after hearing about the crucified children on the road. If it is Meereen, then it may be either ep 8 or ep 10, and she may be pondering what to do with her dragons.

    Kyle,

I’m with you. Looks like Kevan’s armor from S2, but I don’t have great resolution. And I HOPE it is Kevan, so maybe I’m just seeing it that way.

Also, a closer look at the Tormund flash looks like they are running between snowbanks, so maybe that little bit is from beyond the Wall?

    cozmeesah,

Ugh. I don’t fancy myself the expert, but I haven’t heard/seen/read a lot of super-positive, gotta-see-it, cutting-edge-stuff buzz on it either. I’m just speculating that HBO may be a little nervous, given that the concept is new for them (American Horror Story notwithstanding) and the salaries of the stars alone (let alone shooting in a remote Louisiana bayou) might make this kind of an expensive undertaking. Thus, HBO may have thought that pushing the GoT stuff for this premiere would lure lots of initial viewers, rather than forgoing the push, running a teaser instead and hoping that viewership built over time. Perception is everything, so even a few negative (or lukewarm, if you will) reviews before initial airing can be damaging.
It could have been planned this way all along. Again, just speculating. Enjoy the vines!

From the 16-second teaser, in the shot of the wedding ceremony, I can spot Cersei and Tywin on the front row (Tywin is mostly obscured by Joffrey.) On the bride’s side, Mace Tyrell is on the right of the screen.

Back on Joffrey’s side, the first row lining the aisle, from Tywin back towards the banners, I see Tyrion (mostly obscured behind Tywin), Jaime, Pycelle, an unknown dark-haired woman (Shae?), Varys, and behind Varys, I believe Sansa. Then a man who resembles Ser Ilyn Payne. Would be good to see him again, since his illness will likely prevent much of his role moving forward.

I cannot make out anyone on Margaery’s side besides her father. I’m assuming her grandmother is hidden behind her.

i think we are being fed a dummy in the Jon Snow/Tormund Vine. I think its two different scenes. Jon’s is avenging the killing of Mormont at Craster’s Keep. While Tormund’s scene is from something else. But they’ve edited it to look like the same scene

    Summer is Coming,

nice spot on Joffrey’s new crown, wasn’t Renly’s interwoven with rose vines in the book too? I always thought it was a great metaphor, the Rose is the only thing that keeps the antlers there, but the rose vines creep all around the stag and strangle the life out of it with their thorns

When I paused the trailer at 0:07 at Tyrion in chains, the last face on the right in the dark red robe looked like Tom Baker (I know, I’m going mad eh). It was a little funny, as Doctor Who’s 50th was probably the most-hyped TV event last year, and now it’s this.

But what about the build-up to next season, when all the Storm of Swords material’s run out?

Jumping on that over-analyzing theme, I can’t help but echo George R.R. Martin and point out the lack of helms (as others already have) and not be bothered by it. If I remember correctly, one of the greatest attributes of Ser Gregor is that he’s basically a cleaving tank. Without it, it makes me think of Star Wars and that almost unforgivable vulnerability of the Death Star.

When your opponent’s deadliest attributes are speed and reach, having a large, lumbering target with no head protection seems overly favorable for the RV. I think I may have been seduced by too many fan art depictions of the fight over the years and envisioned it slightly differently.

Also, someone pointed out that it appears that the way its been edited, he may have started out with at least something covering his head, but it doesn’t look like Season 1 jousting attire at any rate.

Was anyone reminded of the other scenarios involving similar situations in the TV show? Correct me if I’m wrong, but the only other trials by combat are when Ser Vardis Egen wore a helmet in his duel against Bronn (who obviously doesn’t fight with one ever but presumably wouldn’t have been provided one given the situation in The Eyrie) and The Hound (again doesn’t fight much with a helm on the show and may not have had his helm or have been provided with one because of the circumstances) vs Lord Beric Dondarrion (maybe didn’t wear one for obvious reasons).

Springing to mind, the more impromptu duels of Jamie (perhaps vanity) vs. Ned (wasn’t expecting to have to fight Jamie), Syrio Forel vs. the helmed Lannister men, and Jamie vs. Brienne are lacking in head protection probably because of the circumstances.

As I type this, I also remember Ser Loras was wearing a helm during his one-on-one combat against Brienne in her introduction (and they weren’t even fighting to the death). For that matter, Sandor is wearing a helm in the duel against the unfortunate helmed individual who he dispatches in the opening scene of Season 2. Continuing immediately from there, Lothor Brune is also wearing a helm and at least Ser Dontos brought one with him.

I guess, in a long-winding way, I’m wondering if any planned duels have occurred in this show under circumstances which you would certainly expect each of the participants to be as well-prepared as possible as such should be the case here?

Yes, I’m sure choreography and emotional reactions of the actors (I do hope Thor can act!) are huge considerations, but I guess I’m a little disappointed in that it looks really impromptu like the other duels not involving helms on the show (Dothraki aside [forgot bout them] and Ser Jorah [does he own a helm?]) instead of a staged, epic showdown.

Someone also mentioned the spinning move by the RV looked misplaced (or something of that sort) given the snippets. I do think it looks cool, but it does remind me of when I see those types of moves performed in MMA and how they aren’t done very often because they aren’t worth the risk. Elaborate moves are tricky to pull off with an uncooperative partner and are more likely to end up getting you KO’ed than KO’ing your opponent. In this circumstance, the KO’ing is cleaved in half. But yes, cool choreography—just hope it makes sense and flows well once the whole thing is shown.

That aside, I’m still excited for it even if it sounds like I’m pooh-poohing all over it.

TL;DR - It looks like helms are only for tourneys, exhibitions, and bit players and that’s a bit disappointing. Have there been any planned duels (to the death or otherwise) that were not impromptu, and the characters did not wear helmets on the show?

Also, people speculating on who is present in the dueling scene, does anyone know with any kind of certainty/probability if Lancel or Kevan are going to appear again on the show?

    Kyle,

Oh yes. I can’t see Jaime, but I can see Cersei, Tywin, part of Tyrion, Sansa and I think the bald guy in the forth (?) row is Varys. And there are plenty of women on Marg’s side with that thing on their heads like Olenna has. I always thought they looked like septas..

edit: yes that’s Varys, and in front of him is Sansa, and I’ve seen Loras too. on the other side of course.

Check out the person behind Tyrion in the beige/yellowish outfit. I’m pretty sure that’s Jaime. Can’t get a good look at his face, though.

    Grendam,

Eugene Simon, who plays Lancel, pretty much stated (without coming right out about it) that he wasn’t asked to return for Season 4. Maybe he’s trying to be tricky, though! No word on Kevan, but I do think that’s him in the Red Viper/Mountain vine. We’ll know soon enough.

    Kyle,

Thanks for the response. I recently rewatched the series and you run into characters you almost forgot existed here and there. I know with budgetary/casting production reasons why they don’t bring minor characters back that may not really do much of anything for an entire season or two, but it does concern me that the way they write this show, they sometimes don’t really adequately explain or even refer to characters we have been introduced to already.

I was even wondering about some of the Dothraki we know (the ones who haven’t been killed) are going to have some kind of presence again or if we’re just supposed to forget about them. Same goes with Myrcella, Thoros, Edmure, Blackfish, etc…

They probably are trying to keep their options open, but it does worry me that they will deviate without explanation—speaking of which, anyone know the fate of the Greatjon in the TV universe?

I know there was some confusion last season with Robb Stark’s intentions of securing the Frey’s support before the RW when the show indicated that he already done so in the first season. The presumption was that the Frey men went home after he married Talisa, but the show made no mention of it and Bryan Cogman posted on here to confirm that is what actually happened and why he needed to return. For example, I just hope there isn’t something like not finding out until season 6 (or ever) that Lancel died of his wounds shortly after the Battle of Blackwater Bay.

I keep my fingers crossed that characters aren’t being overlooked and forgotten. Hard to tell sometimes if that’s what’s happening or whether they are deliberately planning on steering the show in a new direction by these decisions as some of these characters often do become significant later down the line.

I like everyone else keep watching the duel clip over and over and agree with others that there are several snippets within that RV/GC fight. The first portion the Mountain is wearing a coif, the final segment from the audience perspective, has the coif removed. I surmise that the fight starts with Gregor wearing a helmet but he removes it because RV is dancing all over the place and the visor obstructs his vision. More than likely the RV removes the coif with a narrowly missed thrust to the head. Hows that for over analyzing a 3 second clip.

Yes! I remember that when they were giving some of his characteristics to Blackfish to make up for his absence. I just don’t know if that means that the Greatjon fell in combat, Robb caught him making lewd remarks about Talisa and kicked him out of the tent, sent him on a mission to the North, died ignominiously at the RW, or what have you.

I know there were issues with the actor, but I hate the lack of closure in the actual story. If he’s dead, chilling at the Last Hearth, or a “guest” of Lord Frey, it would just be nice to know. Just so open-ended… and really weird binge watching between seasons.

From the little I remember, we mostly hear about how he is wounded and then see him at the wedding. At this point, he is a shadow of what he is and has, like you said, become a religious fanatic. Actually, now I’m not sure if we see him at the wedding, or at T.’s funeral.

I’m not quite ready to admit to being wrong about the Mountain’s stupid fucking helmet. There certainly is a mail coif, though, and I can see him ditching the helmet early on for whatever (i.e. a very obvious) reason. I never thought I might say something like that, but … why no shield, broseph? Greenjones,

I’m pretty certain that isn’t Mace. We can see Mace in the diagram you drew, and he’s much heavier than the man sitting between Tywin and Jaime. I still think it might be Kevan! Fingers crossed, at least. See my post above with my theory about the Lannisters sitting on one side of the tent, and the Tyrells sitting on the other side, which we can’t see in that shot.

Additionally, I think the woman is actually a handmaiden standing in the background, and not Cersei. Perhaps not, though.

Well, I hope Kevan is in the season. It was you who contacted his agent, wasn’t it? As for the lady being Cersei, that was my guess given who she’s seated with but then, its very blurry and hard to zoom in, so there’s no way to be sure until we get better quality versions of these clips with the trailer.

Maybe they’ll say that he damaged his right hand during the Riverland massacres and say “well, he’s just as dexterous with his left”? But as a lefty myself, I approve of the change. It’s nice to have it, when the only other explicit lefties are Davos (who’s yet to even draw his sword) and Arya, especially when it’s a less common trait in girls and women. Well, Dagmer was as well, but he hardly counts as he was barely the character from the books at all, if Theon didn’t know who he was.
