Saturday’s GoT Laughs: Literal Trailer

It has been a while since we had a Laughs post. Not enough material, simply. This piece came out last weekend, but of course the release of the behind the scenes video took the limelight off it. The spin on the S4 trailer (which has over 16 million YouTube views at the moment, btw) is not my favourite, but with the onset of the new season we are bound to get more Thrones humour to pick from as well.

And as a bonus, internet memes cast in Thrones, by C-Section Comics:

  • Quality stuff. It’s too bad I’m going to lose my mind in anticipation before April 6 hits though.

  • That wasn’t very funny – “oh god, trailers have montages and fades to black, and don’t show if major characters die, only extras!”…..have any REAL observations, like the guys at Honest Trailers?

  • I had hoped that literal trailer would be in the vein of the honest trailers, but I don’t think I smiled even once.

    The memes were good though.

  • Tobuscus is awesome and my favorite Youtuber (especially for TobyGames), but this Literal Trailer was sadly one of the worst he has ever done. The music doesn’t match very well and there are far too few jokes. Compare this to, let’s say, the Assassin’s Creed (both Brotherhood and Revelations) or the Harry Potter Literal Trailers – they are clearly of higher quality.

  • Robar,

The best was Bioshock Infinite’s Literal Trailer. And I agree, this one isn’t as good as the others I’ve seen.

  • Yeah, I didn’t smile once either sadly. Maybe I just don’t get it…? I don’t even get why it’s called literal trailer, since most of what they say is random…? Am I missing something?

  • Can’t stand literal trailers. What’s sad the person that made it is just doing on the game of thrones trailer because its popular and they can get some views on it.

This is why YouTube should never gone down the road of paying people with ad revune. All creativity has gone and is now filled with videos for mindless sheep.

  • This is how I understand it. The people of Honest Trailers make their own movie trailer to explain what the movie is really like – to sidesplitting results (especially if you don’t like that movie). Toby’s Literal Trailers takes the official trailer and narrates exactly what’s going on in the trailer. They’re two very different things. They’re also not my favourite thing he does, but I see it as more publicity for Game of Thrones.

  • On other news, Maisie is Guest Starring on “Teens React” tomorrow; a popular Youtube show based on teenagers reacting to current topics, viral videos, or (youtube) stars.
Really looking forward to that! :)

  • I usually like the literal trailers and was kinda excited when I heard there was Game of Thrones one out, but this one didn’t really hit the mark for some reason. Can’t really figure out off the top of my head why. I did like the memes, though.

  • Easteros bunny:

I’m not sure I see your point? I’d imagine there be even less creativity on YouTube if people weren’t able to make money of it. They wouldn’t be able to regularly create quality content if they weren’t able to at least partly make a living from it. They would either drop it all together or shoot for more lucrative field. I’m not saying your wrong, I just don’t see how people being able to make money off YouTube is the cause of less quality content.

  • OT but did they mentioned on the TV Show that Jaime is now leader of the Kingsguard? I think in the books it happened when Joffrey sent Barristan away but I don´t recall it from the TV Show

  • Roopert:
    Ser Tahu,
Yeah, but deep down, grumpy cat is really serious cat – he’s just misunderstood – therefore, he’s Stannis.

Grumpy cat could play multiple characters, just like Ian Whyte does. He plays White Walkers (very well!), Giants (very well!), Mountains (not so much) and Coldhands…..maybe…please?.

  • Meraxes,

I rewatched Barristan dismissal scene on YouTube just now and Cersei does say Jamie will be taking Barristan’s position as Lord Commander, and Barristan has a brief line expressing his disgust at that.

  • There’s a certain sad commentary to the fact that there’s “not enough material” for these things, given how low the bar has been set.

  • liam williams,

His twitter was ablaze in the Autumn. I sent many many links to it on wicnet. He’s 500 percent coming back.

Over twitter he also confirmed himself to be working with Neil Marshall and thus in our big battle.

  • Roopert

    Sandor is definitely grumpier.

The literal trailer isn’t funny at all, but the memes made up for it.

  • Easteros bunny:
Can’t stand literal trailers. What’s sad the person that made it is just doing on the game of thrones trailer because its popular and they can get some views on it.

Literal trailers typically stink to high heaven (I expected little and less laughter from this one and even then I was disappointed), but I agree with you here. A lot of the GoT comedic content out there comes off as entirely reactive to the show’s success.

Of course, for every few dozen dollops of mediocrity clinging to the show’s coattails like ambitious dead rats, we get a gem or two, like the Game of Thrones Rap Battle, the Maroon 5 parody, and the Medieval Land Fun-Time World trailer. Those are so good they bear repeat viewing.

  • Greenjones,

When compared against this his costume looks to more or less unchanged. So maybe the recast won`t be sooooo abrupt. I mean it`ll be abrupt but some fans might just think he got a haircut and grew a beard. And dyed his hair. And changed his eye colour. Well, we shall see.

  • WompWomp,

Hollywood types consider it unprofessional to speak about that sort of shit. In the SAG interview thread (where she later alludes to sexy-time betwixt herself and new Daario this season) Emilia Clarke does not elaborate when the interviewer says that the part was recast. You’ll notice most actors only ever speak glowingly about their projects and roles and whatnot and walk on eggshells at all times. That’s why those recent Stephen Dillane interviews were so refreshing. They contained actual candor.

I imagine though, that they just wanted a better actor for Daario, knowing that the part would be bigger this season.

  • So now that one of GURMs publishers tweeted that TWoW is YEARS away. What do y’all think of HBO finishing the story first?

  • Rygar:
So now that one of GURMs publishers tweeted that TWoW is YEARS away. What do y’all think of HBO finishing the story first?

When did that happen? Didn’t see the tweet, but I’m not surprised. I’ve always guessed 2016 at the earliest. Having waited the full wait for AFFC and ADWD, I can’t help laughing at those who thought TWOW would come out this year.

  • Lex,

Jane Johnson tweeted it yesterday to Adam WERTHEAD Whitehead.

To sum up: someone at Westeros posted that Winds would be out in July. Werthead tweeted that this was NOT the case. Jane asked him what he meant. Adam explained and Jane replied “yes its YEARS away”

  • So season 5 will finish where the books remain, GRRM said he told D&D how the books end. But I wonder if he pulled a troll and faked them out.

Well, I look forward to not knowing what happens in season 6, exciting!

  • “Almost certainly YEARS away”. I guess that means there’s still a chance he’ll finish before???

  • Rygar,

(In my best Don Corleone voice…)
“Someone needs to make that fat, bearded man an offer he can’t refuse…”

  • He should’ve just left the two battles in aDwD and then there WOULD be enough material to salvage some alright television from. As it is he’s really shot himself in the foot. I know he had to cut things for aDwD to become the appropriate length, but I’m sure many fans could suggest other things that were expendable.

Maybe he should just publish the two battles separately from tWoW. That’d hold off the HBO of Damocles…at least for the moment.

  • Mads Mikkelsen is the only actor who can do justice to Euron Greyjoy. Cast him ASAP whatever the cost!

  • Greenjones:
    How Jaime-like of you.

    Damn, you’re good.

Due to the extreme difficulty of this book situation, I think it is time to send in Ramsay.

  • Rygar:
    Veltigar,

    Still?Mads is fugly.You must be a dude.

Who fucking cares about his looks. Greatest actor out there and the only actor who can do justice to Euron. If you want beefcakes go to your local Abercrombie&Fitch or watch some porn. Those of us who are interested in art go for Mads!

  • Veltigar,

Oh so you’re an ar teest, eh? My bad.

And I think you’re confusing him with Ben Cumsonhersnatch. He’s the greatest ugly actor out there.

  • Rygar:

And I think you’re confusing him with Ben Cumsonhersnatch. He’s the greatest ugly actor out there.

It’s Benedict Cumberbatch. The guys looks are hardly relevant to a GoT thread. But I’ll just say this. GoT would be lucky to have an actor like Cumberbatch on board.

  • Veltigar,

no we wouldn’t, all the tumblr fangirls would hop aboard and talk will go from shit that matters to OTPs *shivers*

ps that tweet horrified me. YEARS? IT’S ALREADY BEEN THREE, THAT MEANS ATLEAST FIVE?!?!?! maybe this is an inside joke

  • Before TD tonight……The new HBO man-in-the-hospital spoiler ad for HBO Go is quite good. And a teaser for the Feb 6 Ice & Fire Foreshadowing event too.

  • Rygar,

Mads is meh, IMHO. Cumberbitch, on the other hand, all he has to do is speak and he produces vapors that even Melissandre can’t produce :faints:

  • House Mormont,

    Veltigar,

First off. Why so serious? Second off. Go back to first off.

But if you want to get all nerdy, I’ll oblige. All the fucking Greyjoys, including Dagmar, have been English actors. Mads is a fucking Dane. An ugly good acting Dane, but a Dane nonetheless. Do you honestly think they would go that route when there are plenty of great English actors out there?

Oh and yes. The years is real. Dont let Werthead brainwash you.

  • Greenjones,
    Yes…that’s it…more teasing!

Questions answered! Secrets revealed!…..yeah right…they’ve got to tiptoe delicately through anything regarding S4.

  • Hodor’s Bastard,

Well we got a little bit of new footage!</
Joff with Widow’s Wail carving up his uncle’s wedding gift. Jaime and Cersei making out! The Unsullied shooting arrows! A little more of Sandor punching who looks to be Polliver (or Karl Pilkington).b>

Now if only Abyss would bless us all again with just a few gifs…

  • Rygar:

Mads > any other English actor out there. Plus he’s Euron Greyjoy. The most mysterious and dangerous of all the Greyjoy bro’s who just spent years in the lands across the Narrow Sea on a ship where he’s the only Ironborn. A different accent would really highlight the fact that he’s something neither the Ironborn or we have ever seen before.

She retracted it and went for not this year. Imo it all depends on GRRM free time now. If he’s bulling a head at a decent rate as we speak than we might still get a mid-to-late 2015 release (which was my prediction anyway). If not than it’s 2016.

I must say I don’t really get the anger for it anyway. 2014 was always out of the question. I think the real thing that we should be pissed about is that there is no fourth D&E tale to keep us warm nor do we have a confirmed release date for tWoIaF.

I suspected that we would get tWoW in mid 2015. But I hoped we would be getting tPatQ, tWoIaF and most importantly of all the She-Wolves of WF before that. We should be pissed that we aren’t getting that imo. Especially since She-Wolves was almost finished apparently when he put it aside and focused on other projects.

  • TWoIaF is October. It’s all done, apart maybe from some lay-outs and one or two straggling bits of art. They could have gotten it out in April and only decided to hold back for Christmas because it would probably sell more then, so October should be a lock.

Apparently a lot of THE SHE-WOLVES was done, but GRRM ran into issues that may have necessitated heavy rewriting of the whole thing, and chose not to do so but dedicate that time to TWoW instead.

  • Veltigar,

You missed my point. I highly doubt they would cast a non English actor for the role.

I enjoy and appreciate your enthusiasm for the actor, but I think he is very very unlikely to be cast for that role.

And I think that the non GoT website(s) visiting audience would find a different accent confusing. Kinda like three English accent Hobbits and one Scottish accent Hobbit all living in the Shire.

  • Adam Whitehead:

Oh, so the october date has been confirmed? Big relief! I thought they weren’t even sure about that.

Of course it’s unlikely. That’s why I’m starting my campaign ;) When they cast someone else and he sucks I can have the pleasure of saying I told you so.

… it’s not as if there aren’t any massive differences between the accents of the Stark kids or the accents of the Lannisters.

The difference in this case being that they actually have a reason to justify a different accent, namely Euron’s time across the Narrow Sea (a bit like why Ian Glenn’s accent is justifyably different from that of other northerners).

And because I promised myself I’d go full on Cato:

Furthermore I believe that Mads Mikkelsen is the only actor who can do justice to Euron Greyjoy. Cast him ASAP whatever the cost!

    uhuh, totally.

  • And the unmentionable or you will be banned tweet?

There was quite a lengthy discussion about it on Westeros, but people couldn’t stay on topic and wanted to make jokes about GRRM dropping dead instead, so it was closed. It’s still being discussed in about three other threads though.

As for the comment, it confirms what was already clear to anyone remotely familiar with GRRM’s writing modus operandi: the book will not be out in 2014, but it may come out in 2015, I suspect late 2015 at the earliest. Until we get a more concrete update from GRRM, that’s all we have to be going on with.

Is it possible GRRM could surprise all of us, including his publishers, by announcing it’s done tomorrow? Sure, but I would put it at the ‘highly unlikely’ end of the spectrum. All the info we have so far is that 2014 is out, but 2015 is doable.

Oh, so the october date has been confirmed? Big relief! I thought they weren’t even sure about that.

October is the official date now. Theoretically it could drop back to 2015, but I’m not sure why that would be necessary. AFAIK it’s done, or at least in the layout-and-editing stage now.

  • Adam Whitehead,

Since you are here (was gonna post something on this on your blog), I wondered if you have any knowledge of the “Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” delay.

I hope it is because “She Wolves” will be added to it, but I suspect it’s to space things out. I have this theory that as with the collections Martin has edited, they are released with some time between them so it looks like he’s making steady progress in releasing books.

  • KNIGHT is an odd one, because it’s already out in some places (Germany, in particular).

My best guess is that HarperCollins want a GRRM-related ‘new book’ in their catalogue every year, even if it’s not really a ‘new book’ but something they can treat as such. When THE WORLD OF ICE AND FIRE moved back to late 2014, they probably decided to put KNIGHT back to 2015 as a way of hedging their bets; if GRRM does finish TWoW for 2015, KNIGHT could be delayed again to 2016 (hopefully with SHE-WOLVES in that case). If TWoW comes out in 2016, they have KNIGHT for 2015.

It’s a cheesy way of handling it, but for publishers it’s a pretty standard thing to do.

  • Adam Whitehead,

Thanks for the response. Yeah, it makes more sense that the publisher is the one creating the “illusion” of continual new books than some kind of nefarious plan by Martin himself.

It’s kind of weird how the D&E stories have been handled in that they provide a lot of context for things in the main series (and vice versa), but are oddly hidden from anyone who doesn’t go looking for them.

I guess I’d better learn to speak German in the meantime…

  • Adam Whitehead,

There is so much opportunity here to combine great technology and weirnet-like ideas with the books during these periods of ASoI&F interminable downtime and hunger:

    1) The Lands of Ice & Fire (TLoI&F) should be an e-book, which it currently isn’t. The maps are so much fun to study and follow with the books & show.

    2) The ebook versions of ASoI&F books 1-5 should link (if purchased) to the ebook version of TLoI&F. Instead, we get these silly drawings in the books that are not that fun and not at all detailed. If TLoI&F has been purchased by the reader, link to it and use it instead of these children’s drawings.

    3) The World of Ice & Fire should also be an ebook that links with the books and TLoI&F. Just think of the extra lore and added dimension to the characters/story that one could get if there were such links!

    4) With these ebook overlaps and creative linking, we could even have overlaid pathways on the maps that each character has taken. Heck, even link to the fuckin’ awesome artwork out there on the web. Instead of ignoring it, publishers should embrace it!

    5) With the appropriate contracts/agreements in place, the publisher could even link events in the books with GoT scenes…exactly like we link our favorite video content to our posts!

    6) The D&E tales (and TP&tQ) should be released together as an ebook sooner rather than later, with the same technology/connectedness as stated in points 1-5. The D&E tales should be released so that they can be attached to an ebook collection of D&E tales…instead of this anthology bullshit. Same goes for the pre-release chapters.

Just imagine this multi-dimensional, hyperactive method of enjoying the books, the ASoI&F lore and re-reads!

Ugghhh! There is so much more that could be done during the ASoI&F downtime. We get these GRRM “modus operandi” comments that state that he completes about 500 publishable pages per year…yeah right….he’s really approaching 1500 publishable pgs as of now? Teasing, bullshit tweets from his publisher? All I am stating is that this is a wonderfully constructed universe…and all we are getting are these ridiculous promise of disjoint paper productions, re-combinations of existing stuff, and other distracting nonsense like the “Tyrion Quotes” insult that happen to keep the “money flowing” for the publishers.

Given this set of incredible books that use the weirnet and ravens as a key source of storytelling and prophesy, I’m surprised that the publishers don’t get a clue and link this world and its artifacts together better!

    [/never-ending-rant]

  • What are your thoughts on the show finishing before the books?

    More likely than not.

If you mean what would I feel about that, I’ll watch the show, and enjoy being surprised by it rather than knowing (more or less) what’s coming up in detail. It’s certainly going to be impossible for me (as an admin on the GoT TV Wiki!) to avoid it for however long it takes until the books come out. That’s not going to be realistic for me.

    Hodor’s Bastard,

All of that would be awesome, but it would require some pretty committed programming by specialists working for Bantam (and/or HarperCollins). It’d be cool for them to do it, but I doubt they’d want to roll out the expense for it.

It might not be quite the same, but the ‘Guide to Westeros’ app is being updated in a few weeks with info from the LoIaF maps.

  • … but GRRM ran into issues that may have necessitated heavy rewriting of the whole thing, and chose not to do so but dedicate that time to TWoW instead.

Feh. The only thing GRRM has dedicated himself to in the last few years is writing for HBO and popcorn toppings.
